Nathan Brazil had been the guardian of the Well of Souls, where the Well World's master control lay. But now the universe faced a threat more grave than mere destruction: An unnamed and utterly alien entity had somehow been released from its ancient prison and was bent on the corruption of the Well World itself. If successful, it would cause chaos beyond mortal understanding....

The New Watchers at the Well Trilogy Almost Lives Up to the Original Series.......2007-02-03
Jack L. Chalker's return to the Well World universe was much anticipated, and in the end pretty good. This new trilogy, Watchers at the Well, starts with Echoes of the Well of Souls, continues with Shadow of the Well of Souls, and concludes with Gods of the Well of Souls.
Long locked away in an ancient prison, a completely alien force found a chink in its prison cell the last time Nathan Brazil, the immortal keeper of the Well World where control of the universe lies, reset the universe. Now it wants out so it can have free reign of the universe and control of the Well World itself.
Alerted to the danger at hand, the Well World summons Nathan Brazil and Mavra Chang, his new co-Keeper of the Well, but will they answer the call? Brazil is weary, very weary; keeping watch over the universe for all eternity has taken its toll on him and his is just too tired to deal with it anymore. And Chang, who is now estranged from Brazil, never wanted the responsibility that forced upon her.
As the threat to the safety of the universe and the Well World grows and Brazil and Chang ignore the call, the alien entity grows stronger; and, the computer at the heart of the Well World must stop at nothing to get the undivided attention of its keepers before it is too late!
If you loved the original Well World series (and who wouldn't?!?), you will want to read this series; if you haven't, then stop and read it immediately. Then pick up this second series and devour it as well.
Fantastic!.......2003-06-26
Very fast and clean read. The author has taken an old story concept and expanded upon it to create an incredable world. Very fascinating. I never once thought to put the book down, I was hooked! Very good discriptive power.
The best of the best...a must for all sci-fi fans........1997-08-13
When I think of science fiction/fantasy there is one author and series that comes to mind. Jack L. Chalker and the Well of Souls were the beginning of my infatuation with science fiction. When I read that first book as a teenager almost 20 years ago, little did I know the hours and hours of enjoyment that I would have. This series has been in my collection since that time, and with each re-reading it grows more enjoyable. The wonderful plot twists, the mystery, the fabulously rich description and characters grabs your imagination and draws you into a very unusual world filled with sorcery, science and awe. A must read for anyone who wants to get lost in a book of riches of the imagination
WOW!.......1996-11-19
I highly reccomend this book, and the rest of the books in this series! It was a wonderfull journey from earth to a fantasy world where many have gone before
Read this book with an open mind, and you may never return........1996-06-18
I read this book 19 years ago, and the impression was so strong that this is the only book I've ever reviewed(of my own volition)!
Mr. Chalker finds the perfect balance between his mesmerizing setting desriptions
and his nail-biting action. After 19 years, I still get a familiar "feeling"
when I think or hear about the author or his work. This book has
the quirky subtleties of Detective Columbo, the relentless action of
The Terminator, and, creates and fosters the need to know "why" as manifested by the success of the British TV cult classic - The Prisoner.
No amount of plot description seems appropriate for The Well of Souls
series. Suffice it to say that if you have a good imagination, you like to read, and you love
adventure with a wonderfully developed protagonist, you'll be sending me
a thank you letter. (That is, if you'll make the time from reading all the Jack Chalker
Well of Souls' books you can find.)

A great reference throughout my life.......2000-06-24
This is a book that every African-American woman should add to her book collection. I have referred to this book throughout my life. It has helped inform me about many issues that black women face everyday. This book has personally helped me, and others, in so many ways!
Wonderful Book!.......1999-10-25
This book is great for Black women. It's not just a book on the health of the Black woman, but one which encourages each of us to take care of the most important person in our lives -- OURSELVES.
This book goes beyond the typical reminders about mammograms, pap smears, smoking, and HIV. Parts 4 through 6 really hit home. And the live voices of real women (Julia McMillon's story on page 567 really touched me!) made this book poignant. The photography and handy references at the end of each chapter makes this book worth every penny. As a result of reading this book, I joined the CA chapter of the Black Women's Health Project. My thanks go out to the author, Linda Villarosa! Keep up the good work.

Suggested by my mother, it 's the guide for womanhood........1997-07-26
Particularly, African-American woman have been in the dark about health issues that can cause emotional stress and issues that doctors feel we aren't smart enough to understand. On a personal note, after reading this book suggested by my mother, I found I suffered from a condition mentioned in the book that, when brought to the attention of my doctor, it was not even on her mind to check for.We all do self-diagnosis when we are ill though not necessarily the best thing, but now I can confirm what I may think with a more educated reiview of my symptoms and share in the treatment with my doctor instead of accepting the typical prescribed remedy. A "must-read" for every woman and her daughters

Nowadays Western spa treatments go far beyond skin deep. As Eastern spa owners have known for centuries, the best way to achieve health and beauty is to offer a spa experience that cares for the whole person, not just a person's skin, nails, or weight problem. As a result, meditation classes, herbal tonics, and aromatherapy are now commonplace spa offerings. In Well Being, Barbara Close (cousin of Glenn), the founder of Naturopathica, a full-service holistic spa in East Hampton, New York, teaches readers how to bring these remarkably healing and seemingly elusive spa remedies into their daily lives.
Close starts with an inviting chapter on beginning meditation and then moves into practical discussions on how to use fresh herbs for replenishing spirits and healing the skin. She arranges her advice around the four seasons, offering ideas for cold soothing teas in the winter and homemade sunburn salves in the summer. Although this is a practical, hands-on book with very specific advice, it's also exquisitely lovely to look at. Photographer Susie Cushner offers a wide range of sensual images, such as a woman washing her hair, a still life with a cup of herbal tea, and numerous seasonal landscapes. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
From starting a busy day with an energizing juice boost to squeezing in a yoga class after work, rejevenating personal rituals have slowly become part of our daily lives. Luxurious beauty treatments such as aromatherapy, herbalism, and massage are no longer limited to special occasions and the day spa. Well Being takes an intimate, sensual approach to self-care, with simple recipes and ideas that will make you feel as if you're pampering yourself from the inside out. Slide your toes into an aromatic rosemary foot bath, sip a restorative pear elixer, ease dry skin with a soothing herbal balm. Just a small pantry of herbs and essential oils are needed to prepare the health and beauty recipes in Well Being. Arranged seasonally, it offers recipes for all that ails: steaming teas and cold soothers ease the winter chills, refreshing baths and mists counter the climatic fluctuations of spring, cool tonics and compresses quench summer's dry skin and sunburn. What a beautiful book!.......2001-05-20
I bought this on a whim when it was recommended to me and couldn't be more thrilled with this purchase! What a beautifully presented book, packed with rejuvenating recipes for inner and outer health and beauty, and written with the beginner in mind. It is very informative, easy to follow, and the ingredients can easily be found by anyone near a health food store or internet access. It's apparent that Barbara Close knows what she's doing as an aromatherapist and I can only imagine that her holistic spa must be absolutely wonderful considering the attention, care and fine taste that went into this book. I plan to give copies of this as gifts and am sure anyone who receives it will be as enthralled with it and ready to try their own recipes as I am. Five stars!
Well Being.......2000-11-11
Great recipes and this book will be an inspiration for those long winter days and evenings. What a great way to take care of yourself!
Great recipes, makes a great gift.......2000-06-27
This is a wonderful book that teaches you how to use essential oils and herbs to cure common ailments. After reading this book and trying some of the recipes I truly believe that by sensibly using aromatherapy, herbalism, massage and healthy food you can live more naturally and improve your quality of life.
The book starts out with a brief history. Then you find first aid charts, one for herbs and another for essential oils. The charts include the name, properties, common uses and any hazards of each item. Instructions for preparing and using them in teas, infusions, decoctions, tinctures, ointments, inhalations and vaporization follow. There is also a great list of carrier and herbal infused oils.
Next, there are forty recipes arranged by seasons focusing of different aspects such as rejuvenation and sensuality. Spring includes recipes for a delicious pear elixir and calendula salve. Summer features a natural pleasant smelling insect repellant, a tea tree oil antiseptic and a citrus body splash. Autumn includes a wonderful grapefruit exfoliating paste and rosemary infused massage oil. Winter contains a tasty recipe for garlic soup, a chamomile face serum and a peppermint thyme inhalation.
Association, education, and resource directories are a nice bonus. I liked that the resource directory listed places to find herbs and oils as well as bottles and jars to put them in. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to pamper themselves. It is packed with information and is easy to follow. It would also make a great gift.

Neptune Clarified :).......2002-08-07
Just like "Alive and Well with Pluto" and "Alive and Well with Uranus", this book is fabulous in its clear writing and in its thoroughness of coverage. As other reviewers have noted, the murky waters of Neptune are the hardest to fathom, but Tierney makes sense for both practicing astrologers and for those undergoing Neptune transits themselves. He takes the reader through Neptune's transits of houses and planets, explains the themes and suggests ways of navigating them. Indispensable!
Neptune . . . On A Clear Day.......2002-06-15
Clarifying the meaning and function of astrological Neptune is not dissimilar to trying to converse underwater. You end up with a bunch of bubbles in your face that pop and leave you with nothing. Bil Tierney found a way to have that conversation about this nebulous ruler of the deep and actually give his readers something they can comprehend, keep and apply. He accomplishes this feat by being not only an adept astrologer, but also a masterful story teller.
This energetically written book provides much insightful information about Neptune's transits. Tierney includes a sometimes amusing review of our natal planets and houses---all from Neptune's perspective--plus he offers an uncommon way to look at mythological Neptune (especially the stormier side) in his Introduction.
In Part Two, Bil is describing Neptune's influence in more down-to-earth ways, showing how this planet functions in our day-to-day world.
Tierney's books reveal he is a deep but practical thinker who is very psychologically astute. And . . (very important to me), he is much fun to read!
Alive and Well with Neptune.......2000-07-25
Wow! Buy this book! The chapter entitled "A Neptunian Tour of Our Natal Planets" is alone worth the price of the book and your time! Mr. Tierney simply "becomes" the planet he writes about. He brings the ponderous, foggy Neptune into our daily life so that we may effectively access it's energies and he does so in a manner that I have not experienced in studying any other book on Neptune. There are other excellent books on Neptune and I have read many of them and while Mr. Tierney leaves out none of the features of the other books, he simply relates them more clearly to "this world" and practical every day life.
Readiing this book is like mining for gold....you won't be sorry you took the time to investigate it's contents!
Book Description
Peter Terry Returns
A knock at her door. A bloody axe. A murder weapon in her own living room. The elusive white man with the slash on his back is out hunting again, chasing souls. Peter Terry is haunting minds, invading dreams, and wrecking lives. As Dylan Foster searches for answers, she stumbles upon a dark cult of angel worship. Harking back to the days of Noah, it’s now blinding and intoxicating young people, leading them to their deaths. In this battle for souls, everything’s up for grabs, leaving Dylan grasping for strength as the battle rages around her. When at last she discovers the truth, it is far from the truth she expected.
“What does Peter Terry want with my son?”
“The same thing he wants with all of us. Peter Terry is a hunter,” I said. “He’s hunting souls.”
Dylan Foster, a psychology professor at Southern Methodist University, is preparing for a Saturday night date when she hears something at her front door. She opens the door--and a bloody ax falls into her entryway, bringing a young woman’s murder, quite literally, into Dylan's living room. Caught up in a desperate search for answers, Dylan must use her psychologist’s mind and acute spiritual radar to unearth the connections between the murdered girl; the accused murderer and convicted rapist Gordon Pryne; and Peter Terry, the elusive white man with the slash on his back.
Peter Terry is hunting again, chasing souls, haunting minds, invading dreams, and wrecking lives. As Dylan draws closer to the answer she seeks, she stumbles upon a discovery that draws her ever deeper into danger. But Dylan cannot find the truth—not until she realizes nothing is as it seems in the fight for the human soul…
“The master of supernatural mystery, Melanie Wells delivers big time in The Soul Hunter. A dash of romance and a generous serving of humor, seasoned with grace, makes this a thriller not to be missed.”
Kathryn Mackel, author of The Hidden
“Part mystery thriller, part comedy of manners, part novel of moral scrutiny, The Soul Hunter showcases Wells’ gift for spinning an intricate tale filled with an edgy mix of humor, suspense, and spiritual intrigue. I swallowed the novel in one deliciously terrified gulp.”
K. L. Cook, author of Last Call and The Girl from Charnelle
Story Behind the Book
“These themes—the reality of spiritual warfare, the faithfulness of God, the significance of seemingly mundane events, the importance of individual faithfulness—have always fascinated me. And Peter Terry is such a compelling character. Writing this book was almost like showing up to see what he would do next! The dimensions of the individual being seemed to spin out, creating fascinating characters and a storyline that wove itself in complicated and unexpected ways.”
—Melanie Wells
Customer Reviews:
More of the BEST!.......2007-10-09
More great Melanie Wells...incredible suspense and huge laughs! What more could you want?! If you're looking for a page turner, this is it!
Peter Terry Is My Hero!.......2006-12-19
Ok. Peter Terry isn't really my hero. But now that I have your attention....READ THIS BOOK! Melanie Wells has crafted another intriguing page-turner that you just can't put down.
SMU Psychology Professor Dylan Foster is back and she finds herself right in the middle of a new mystery when she opens her door one night and discovers a bloody axe on her porch. From the beginning, the reader is taken on a thrill ride as Dylan is trying to find out the origin of the axe (not to mention whose blood it is!) and the reason for the sudden reappearance of the delightfully creepy Peter Terry.
Wells proves once again that she is the master of the first person narrative, and the story flows along at a quick pace that continually holds the reader's attention. Dylan Foster is funny, witty, and smart and Wells drops us right into the middle of her world. Fans of Wells' first novel, When The Day of Evil Comes, will love this new installment, and you will be dying for more after the satisfying conclusion.
Dylan's back!.......2006-12-11
Quickly becoming one of the most iconic characters in Christian fiction, Dylan Foster's back for battling with the demonic Peter Terry in The Soul Hunter, Melanie Wells's sequel to When the Day of Evil Comes--an equally hillarious novel. Wells's prose is sharp, sassy, and as easy to read as a writer could ever be. Dylan is so realistic and believable that one begins to wonder where author ends and character begins. Don't let the freaky cover scare you off. More a mystery than a suspense novel, this is easily one of my top five novels of '06.
Fiction That Feels Real.......2006-09-22
This second novel in the 'Day of Evil' series, was as wonderfully crafted as its predecessor was, and maintained the same refreshingly unique style of Melanie Wells. If you loved the cheeky heroine, Dylan Foster, in the first novel, you will find her even more charming in this story. She has a wonderful sense of humor, even in the face of evil.
Each novel in this series has its own proper conclusion; however, I still recommend starting with "When the Day of Evil Comes," to prevent any minor spoilers that may be gleaned from this novel.
Although the cover art depicts the nefarious Peter Terry--a corporeal demon--do not misinterpret this to be a horror story. This is superbly written fiction, which remains stimulating without gimmick.
Scary and sassy.......2006-07-06
Melanie Wells does it again! She entertains, amuses, and scares the dickens out of us. Her writing is superb, her heroine charming, and her villain absolutely blood-chilling. And then there's the rats...
Book Description
Jack Chalker's Well World epic occupies an honored place among the classics of science fiction. Now this boldly imagined, intricately plotted new novel takes us deeper into the Well World than ever before . . .
On the mysterious Well World, the evil tyrant Josich and his dark agents search desperately for the eight scattered pieces of the fabled Straight Gate. Whoever possesses the Gate will wield enormous power, travelling between universes at the speed of light and wreaking havoc across galaxies.
Opposing Josich is a small band of travelers new to the Well World. There is Core, once a machine, now flesh and blood; Ming and Ari, two minds sharing a single body; Jaysu, an angel; and Genghis O'Leary, a lizard being. Unbeknownst to them, they have an unlikely ally: a vengeful entity who is able to clone any person or object with a single touch--and mete out death just as swift . . .

The Best of the Well World Series.......2005-04-29
Along with the Sea is Full of Stars, I found these two books the best of all the books. Perhaps it was because there was no Nathan Brazil or Mavra Chang who can not lose due to the Well World itself aiding them. Having Kincaid as a "bogey-man" in the background actually fit his personality and characterization. Each major character had their purpose and part and if one looks at the theme of these books with some detachment from the earlier books, the story is actually very different.
Not as good as the rest of the Well World Saga.......2002-11-19
I read the reviews before I bought and figured that the negatives were "I miss Nathan Brazil". I was wrong.
The only character I grew to like had her mind wiped pretty much right away, so I didn't really care about her later.
The plot was so convoluted and confusing, and by the end the threat so unclear, that by the end of the second book I hardly cared who won.
You know, if you read this Jack, I cared about Renard, Nicki, Wu Julie, Asam, Marquoz, Serge Ortega, Gypsy and Prof. Zinder, every one of them more than I cared about any of these characters. What made the previous books great was caring about the characters.
Also, the underwater people were just wet land people. They thought and acted like they were just land people trying to dom the things that land people do with the "problem" of all that water being in the way. A water people would LIKE being in the water, and their entire culture would reflect that.
Something Else?.......2001-06-07
As soon as I read Chalker's introduction to this duology - the newest addition to the increasingly large Well World series - I decided to give it a try. So it wasn't a part of the normal canon, as he put it, but instead a book about Something Else. Well and good, I'm always ready to try something new from an established story teller.
Two books and about 700 pages later, I still don't know what he was talking about. I'm also extremely perplexed: just what happened to Chalker's writing? His prose, plotting, character development - even his humor - don't match up with the previous work that bears his name. This duology provided such a lackluster story that I am at a complete loss to explain its existence in print. I'm tempted to visit Chalker's web site and write him an email asking, "Why?" The only possible answer I can derive comes from Chalker's shameless introductory statement that he didn't plan to return to the Well World until someone fronted a sizeable sum. Apparently, this offer didn't provide enough impetus for Chalker to return to form.
Page 1 of the first novel, "The Sea is Full of Stars," starts with the strong, confident narrative voice I remember from Chalker's earlier novels. Unfortunately, this turns out to be the sole shining moment for the entire series. I almost wish that Delrey hadn't plugged these into the original Well World saga as books 6 and 7. They don't belong in the same category as the originals.
The five-minute fix invades the Well World.......2001-04-21
Well, hmmm. I would have liked to have liked this book -- I've always enjoyed the Well World books -- but this one was somewhat disappointing. It seemed very rushed, and plotlines that were introduced in the previous book were downplayed or ignored entirely. For instance, the whole "The Avenger must triumph not for revenge" plotline suggested in first book was never really used, and Kincaid's role throughout both books is reduced to that of a rarely-seen bogey-man -- in fact, he turns out to be a totally unimportant character, whose role could have been filled by any other character. The other "pivotal" character, Angel, gains extraordinary powers in order to ultimately become -- the world's most powerful librarian. Josich is present only in the last 20-pages or so of the book, and this makes the whole ending seem rather rushed. None of the actions of the characters preceding the denoument actually has any meaningful impact on the climax of the story, and the only unpredictable parts come when Chalker changes the rules on us (with hand-waving as to why Brazil & Chang might have not been called, and glossing over why the Well World didn't take more action to protect itself earlier on). Furthermore, it's as if I've seen these characters before. Granted, even in the non-Well books, the signature of all of Chalker's writing is to take characters and mangle them physically and emotionally, but even beyond that, Core is largely synonymous with Obie, Kincaid is Brazil without the screen time, Angel is a weird mix of Wuju and Vardia, and Jules is a near dead-ringer for Hain. (I will admit, however, to getting a real chuckle when O'Leary and his group actually swallow some of the bad guys... :-)
Twenty pages from the end, it appeared to me like we'd need a whole other book to finish this story, which I was thoroughly engrossed in. Instead, we get a 5-minute fix as if it were some Star Trek cliffhanger, and I was left saying, "What....?"
Well oh Well.......2001-01-10
I have followed and reread all of the Well's 10 books several times. I find this series as well as the Flux and Diamond series to be the best works of scifi written since Asimov. Some readers have written their displeasure due to the limited use of the most interesting character; however, even in the original Well series, Nathan (God) only dominated a portion of the series (including the book with his name on the cover). Sometimes, less is more. The ending of this book leaves a huge door open to sequals and a new possible mixture of the foundling empires of the "real" galaxy with a mixture of the Well and it's inhabitants. I guess the other readers just miss Obie (or were overly hot for Mavra).
Book Description
The rift in the fabric of space was fast approaching the Well World, and time was running out. If the Well World were destroyed, the entire universe would disappear like a blown-out candle. But the squabbling forces on the planet weren't going to let the impending doomsday stop them from having a serious war. Troops all over the planet were gathering for the final battle. Nathan Brazil and Mavra Chang somehow had to reach the Well of Souls in time to save the universe and before any of the hostile natives managed to kill them. At best, a difficult mission. At worst, impossible -- especially since there was a price on Brazil's head and many would-be claimants! So Nathan Brazil decided that the simplest way to reach the Well of Souls was to be killed. The enemy would find that he was much more dangerous dead than he had ever been alive . . .

Sequel to Midnight at the Well of Souls.......1998-06-03
A continuation of the story started in Midnight at the Well of Souls, Exiles is the first of a two part subset within the five book series, and is paired with its own sequel, Quest for the Well of Souls; together they are called "The War of the Well World".
This story begins with a new character as the focal point of the story. Mavra Chang. Mavra is a sort of freelance thief, and she's been hired to steal something (or so she thinks).
It turns out that a physicist laboring away at his own vision of cosmology rediscovers the basics of the technology of the universe's parent race, the ancients who created The Well World (see my review under Midnight at the Well of Souls). Unfortunately, one of his underlings decides to take the awesome power for his own, and with it, blackmail the interstellar community. The underling invites an assortment of powerful people to a demonstration of the technology, and into this comes Mavra Chang. She's been sent by a third party who does not wish to get too close to what appears to be a trap.
Something goes wrong, though, and the entire experiment (computer and reality generator built into an asteriod) winds up accidentally connecting itself to The Well World computer, and teleports itself and all aboard to The Well. What's worse, it cannot disengage the computer link at all. Faced with eventual starvation, the passengers disembark in a pair of shuttles, bound for the surface of The Well World.
And when they land, suddenly, since the creation of the modern universe, there is now a way for those living on The Well to leave (The Well has a variety of programming built in that prevents the natives from ever building on their own any machine or system that might escape the gravity of The Well itself).
This novel deals with what happens to the passengers after they land, and what happens to them in their intial encounters, and what new races they are transformed into.
