Book Description
“Scripture illuminates the path of marital intimacy. The Song of Solomon shines brightly, showing us the way to the best sex we can possibly experience.”
“As practical as it is profound, Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God may well be the best book on marriage I’ve ever read. I was motivated to love my wife more and broadened in my understanding of how loving my wife brings glory to God . . . this book is truly a treasure.”
Gary Thomas, author of
Sacred Marriage and Sacred Parenting
“Men, if you are looking for a book that will give you a few easy tips for spicing up your sex life, look somewhere else. This book invites you instead to completely revolutionize your romantic relationship with your wife. It calls all of us to a more profound and deeply satisfying kind of countercultural sex than most of us have ever experienced.”
Bob Lepine, co-host of FamilyLife Today, author of
The Christian Husband
“There’s not a husband I know that won’t benefit from this book. This is more than a book for the bedroom. It will train you to romance your wife and set you on a lifelong pursuit of winning her heart. Wives, do yourselves a favor and buy this book for your husbands!”
Joshua Harris, author of

A bit disappointed.......2007-05-14
All of the things the other reviewers say about this book are true. It's worth having and gives a Biblically-based view of what marriage is supposed to be about. Mahaney goes to the Song of Solomon to show that God designed sex to be enjoyed--delighted in--within the context of marriage and give several suggestions as to how a man can help to keep that spark in the marriage and the bedroom.
However, I was a bit disappointed for a couple of reasons. First, it was rather short (check out the product details, not only the number of pages, but also the book's dimensions--it's kind of dinky). The main disappointment, though, was that I had already heard most of this before--from the author himself. I bought the book after hearing Mahaney's talk at a conference entitled "Sex and the Supremacy of Christ." I liked his talk and wanted to hear some more from him, so I ordered this book, but he had obviously used this book as the main source of material for the conference, and much of what was in the book was also in his talk.
So, as I said, the book is good and it's worth having. However, for a bit more money one might want to consider going to [...] and ordering the excellent cd set entitled "Sex and the Supremacy of Christ", which has eight cd's, one of which includes much of the material found in this book.
C.J. Mahaney at His Best.......2005-08-24
I felt a deep sense of deja vu as I read Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God. It took me only a few pages to realize that this book, in a condensed form, forms the basis for a chapter in Sex and the Supremacy of Christ (edited by John Piper and Justin Taylor). I had enjoyed that particular chapter of Sex and the Supremacy of Christ and felt certain I would likewise enjoy this lengthened version.
Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God is based loosely on the Song of Solomon. C.J. Mahaney shares my understanding of this book of the Bible stating simply, "It's about sex" (page 9). While many have attempted to allegorize Solomon's song, few have succeeded with any degree of credibility. "That's right gentlemen." says Mahaney, "Solomon's Song of Songs is an entire book of the Bible devoted to the promotion of sexual intimacy within the covenant of marriage. It's an eight-chapter feast of unbridled, uninhibited, joyous immersion in verbal and physical expressions of passion between a man and a woman" (page 10). Amen. So as the reader prepares to read this book, he must prepare to celebrate God's gift of sex. The author says, "The purpose of the book you hold in your hands is to lead us back into God's ideal of joyful, unashamed, indulgent, loving sexuality in the context of marriage" (pages 14-15). This book is directed primarily to men, largely because it is the husband's role (not an author's) to lead his wife into a fuller understanding of what Scripture teaches about sexuality. Mahaney will provide the foundation men can build upon to discover with his wife how sex and romance can be done to the glory of God.
Following an introductory chapter Mahaney uncovers the divine purpose for marriage. This, he teaches, is to reflect the relationship between Christ and the Church. He goes on in the next chapter to provide a piece of wisdom he considers the most important in the entire book: "In order for romance to deepen, you must touch the heart and mind of your wife before you touch her body" (page 28).
Several chapters follow in which Mahaney offers specific ways of touching a wife's heart and mind in order to build the type of relationship God desires for a marriage. Turning to the actual act of consumation, he follows Solomon's lead, providing little in the way of specific details that might read like a to-do list. Instead he invites us to study and understand the Song of Solomon to understand what Solomon meant when he wrote, "Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! Blow upon my garden, let its spices flow. Let my beloved come to his garden, and eat its choicest fruits" (4:16).
The book concludes with a chapter written by Carolyn Mahaney (C.J.'s wife) addressed to women. It is the fifth chapter ("The Pleasure of Purity") of her book Feminine Appeal: Seven Virtues of a Godly Wife and Mother.
With lots of humor (much of it self-deprecating), but also compassion and sensitivity, Mahaney sets forth some principles that will bear much fruit in many marriages. He is honest about his book. "Please don't make the mistake of thinking that simply by reading this book you are being changed. I wish it were that easy. But change does not take place until we apply what we are learning in very specific ways, at very specific times, and always in dependence on God's grace to make our efforst effective" (page 35). This book is just the beginning. Far from a "10 Surefire Ways to Make Your Woman Melt" kind of book, Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God will lead the husband to see his wife as a remarkable God-given treasure. It will help the husband learn to see his wife in color while everyone else appears in mere black and white.
While it may seem strange, this book refreshed my joy in being a Christian. I was amazed at the wisdom of God who saw fit to give us an entire book of the Bible dedicated to teaching us how to love our spouses in a way that honors Him. Truly His Word is sufficient! Truly it is relevant! I was thankful that He has provided teachers to explain the Word to us. And I was renewed in my gratefulness towards Him for providing me the priceless treasure that is my wife.
So men, buy this book. I cannot imagine a husband who would gain nothing from it. Women, buy a copy and slip it into your husband's hand with a suggestive wink. He'll get the idea. Read it, enjoy it, and most of all, put it into practice. Learn how sex and romance can bring glory to the One who created them for our enjoyment.
Marriage as God intended it.......2004-10-05
Sex - God created it, the world abuses it, and most Christians are embarrassed by it.
The way the world treats sex is like using a Stradivarius violin to hammer in nails - a thing of wondrous beauty misused and trashed beyond all recognition. For years Christian men have been conned by TV, Hollywood and the press that marriage and sex is about personal pleasure. We have lost the vision of what God intended in marriage.
CJ Mahaney's book returns us to the maker's instructions and restores a much profounder biblical perspective of romance within marriage as God intended it. He uses the Song of Solomon to illustrate how men should treat their wives. He puts the masterpiece of marriage back into its God-given frame, showing the significance of what marriage demonstrates - the relationship between Christ and his people. He calls Christian men to selfless sacrificial love, like Christ's love for his Church. He calls men to be leaders, a much-needed truth; and to be thoughtful caring servant husbands, possibly a more needed truth.
One of the great lessons repeatedly brought home is: "Before you touch her body, touch her heart and mind."
Too often men are more focused on their needs and pleasures. This is not what God intended in marriage - a selfless giving by each person. Mahaney then proceeds to illustrate what this means, and to help us men with the task of romancing our wives, and to develop marriages that go way beyond the physical side of the relationship.
This book is a must read for all married men. Some may find Mahaney's frankness startling, but he deals with this delicate subject without being crude or explicit. Mahaney's wife, Carolyn, has added an appendix, "A Word to Wives", which contains much of what we might want to say to our wives, but are afraid to.
Read this book, and put his suggestions into practice so that in a world where marriage is unfashionable and often self-serving, we will be able to live God-honouring, God-glorifying marriages.
Men, buy it and surprise your wife. Ladies, buy it for your husbands.
Before You Touch Her Body, Touch Her Heart and Mind.......2004-07-27
That simple phrase is what all of us men need to hear: "Before you touch her body, touch her heart and mind." Cursorily using Song of Solomon as an illustration of true biblical covenant love, C.J. Mahaney has written one of the most useful books that I have ever read.
This book is written for men. Men need to step up and lead in romancing the marriage. Therefore Mahaney asks that men don't read this book with their wives. Great intimacy, including sex is something that every marriage should be full of. If that is missing, it is primarily the husband's issue that he needs to fix. Then in chapter 2 he moves on to give the biblical God-given purpose for marriage from Ephesians 5: "A profound mystery, revealed to all to see."
My favorite chapters then follow (3-6) in which Mahaney lets the readers draw from his life experiences, his successes and his failures, to help us with romancing our wives, touching their hearts and minds so that then touching their bodies is so much more intimate, frequent, and amazing. These chapters have been so useful to me. I'm not going to ruin it for you by giving you any of the advice here. But let me tell you that just taking advantage of the advice that he gives and the motivation that comes knowing that greater intimacy better glorifies God has already had a very noticeable impact in the two weeks since I finished my first reading of the book...so much so that my wife has told me whatever I read has changed me for the better.
Finally he ends in chapter 7 with a mild exposition of Song of Solomon 8:5-7, "Strong as Death, The Enduring Power of Covenant Love." Marital love goes beyond just sex, but sex is truly only as amazing as God designed it to be in the context of marriage. Marital love is forever, it isn't dependent on sexual ability; it isn't dependent on perfection; it isn't dependent on emotions. Marital love comes for God and is a reflection of God's love for the church.
Carolyn Mahaney, C.J.'s wife wrote the an appendix, "A Word to Wives" which I haven't read but have been told by my wife is very good. I too have noticed a difference in her since she has read that chapter and the book from which it comes "Feminine Appeal."
I strongly recommend you read this book. I am in the middle of reading it a second time and plan on reading it and putting to action its suggestions until the day I die.

A Touching Story of Love, Conviction and Redemption.......2005-01-30
Some friends of mine gave me a copy of Love and Glory as a present. They knew how much I liked the author (actually, I like the Spenser mystery series, which are penned by the author), and thought that I might like this book as well. Since I am not a rabid fan of love stories, the book found its way to the very bottom of my 'to read much later list'.
Well, to make a long story short, given that I read a book a day, I eventually got around to Love and Glory, and I now regret not having read it much earlier. Parker spins a tale well, with characters that, despite all our best efforts, we come to care about, a clipped, succinct writing style, and an absorbing narrative. In this love story, we meet a young man who goes off to college, falls in love with a flighty, free-spirited, but somewhat confused classmate. She naturallly breaks his heart, he eventually suffers hardship and a protracted fall from grace, and we watch as he picks himself up at rock bottom, dusts off his backside, and slowly but surely climbs the ladder to personal success one slow but sure step at a time, using nothing but strength of character, force of conviction and the flicker of undying love for the woman who once spurned him.
Of course, you can guess the ending to this wonderful tale, but as they say about life, it is not the destination but the journey that matters most. The hero's story from idealistic young man to a man in his own right is both touching and highly motivating. Parker's penchant for dropping life lessons here and there are evident in this story, and at times I got the feeling that I was actually reading a Spenser novel, only in this setting, everyone's favorite Back Bay PI chose to go to college and grad school, eventually becoming a writer, and not a detective. There were also some interesting similarities between Boone, the hero of this story, and Spenser, such as both serving in the Korean Conflict, both sharing a love of literature, and both possessing a love, bordering on religious devotion, for one woman.
In sum, I liked Love and Glory, and I think most people will like it, too. Spanning a time period between the early 1950s and the middle 1970s, it also provides the reader with a good glimpse of a turbulent in American history. For me, the book was an interesting departure from my usual fare (mysteries, assorted non-fiction and god-awful sci-fi), and in future, I may add more of the genre to my eclectic reading list.
One of the most beautiful and insightful love stories ever.......2002-08-18
It is hard to comprehend what the other reviewers here missed. This is a deeply moving and timeless story of love, loss, horror, redemption, pursuit, return and sacrifice. The writing is clean, evocative and will touch you. You will feel, you will cry, you will understand.
A romance novel this isn't!.......2001-09-03
Parker is an exceptionally good author but this is by far his worst work. At the very least, this novel is his pathetic attempt at emulating the day time soap operas and he fails miserably.
Of course it's autobiographical..........2001-08-30
I didn't know there was any question of it. I first picked this book up years ago at the library because the opening is set at Colby College, a school attended by several friends and acquaintances and just up I-95 from here. I enjoyed it enough to follow the librarian's advice and try the Spenser novels (there were only a few then). It is generally assumed here in New England, home of Parker, Spenser, and Boone, that the story is based on Parker's own experiences. I'm buying a copy now for my son's girl friend, a Colby alumna.
Real insight into the thinking of well-known author.......2001-01-13
If you enjoy the Spenser novels, you will probably enjoy this - although the novel is not about Spenser. The main character wants to win the fair haired maiden at any cost and in that sense is romantic. What is lacking is any real history of the main character that would give him more life. The ending is like a fairy tale. The main reason I read this was to provide insight into the thinking of the author who created Spenser, who in my opinion is a wonderful character. If I hadn't read the Spenser novels and really enjoyed them I doubt I would have read and enjoyed this novel.
Book Description
Scientific discoveries point to the existence of at least eleven dimensions. This award-winning book explains what these extra dimensions reveal about God and the incarnation, atonement, free will, and predestination.

Great Book.......2007-03-09
This is a great thought inducing book. I do not agree with everything pitched, however, he does have some concepts that really are new to christian philosophy and that warrent further study. Chapt 2-3 are pretty tough to get thru if you are not a science geek, but it is worth the read.
Target Audience.......2006-02-19
Let's look at the Target Audience and why they will not
buy this book.
I am an unbeliever, or better yet an Apostate.
When I read what this book was about, I laughed.
It is obvious that what he is doing is highly speculative
and forbidden within a Calvinist framework. 'The *secret* things
belong to the Lord." As has been said, Superstring theory
is not even a proven concept yet, like Evolution is. Even if it
was, it would be dangerous for bible believing Christians to define the Trinity, the Incarnation, or other *anomilies* (contradictions) within the framework of Superstring Theory. What would be the connection? There is no way you can take the ancient *formulas* that attempt to make sense of the above doctrine of God and *make them fit* into a *naturalistic* explanation for God. If Superstrings can be proven, then they fall into the natural realm of the Universe. If you can *contain* God in a well defined dimension, then you have a naturalistic, and thus limited God. He would be no longer Omnipresent, Omnipotent and all those other things you like to ascribe to him.
Though I appreciate the attempt to make sense out of God through science, this approach has obvious pitfalls. Perhaps someone can state the case better then I can, since I honestly do not understand superstring theory, but I do understand that if we can find other diminsions in our universe, they would have a naturalistic character to them, and then by definition, God would be *contained*.
Bottom line, what he is saying is wishful saying and unscriptural. The bible doesn't even hint at fanciful scientific theories. The bible isn't a science textbook.
In fact, the bible cannot answer simple questions like if God said, be fruitful and multiply to all the creatures he created on that first week that more then 90% of all species are already extinct. I guess they didn't obey him????
Solid science, solid theology, very academic, but very good.......2005-08-05
This is not one of Ross' most inspiring page turners. It's pretty much nitty-gritty hard science and practical extrapolation. None-the-less, it's good book and a good read.
Modern physics undermines liberal theology.......2005-06-28
Many Christian theologians, intimidated by liberalism, have retreated from the traditional view that God knows the future. They have adopted a small view of God, often known as "process theology." God does not know the future, because the future does not yet exist. God is discovering the future along with us.
In this great book, Dr. Ross fully restores the orthodox doctrine of God's transcendence. He does so with the aid of modern physics. Dr. Ross' argument is irrebuttable. Time is just one of the created dimensions. The Creator can see all of time at a single glance, just as He can see the rest of the universe. Our past, present and future are all in the present tense to God. His name, "I AM," is more than just semantics!
[Hmmm ... this review was hit by 22 negative votes within a few hours' time. And a positive review I did of another Hugh Ross book received 22 negative votes at the same time. Must just be a concidence!]
EXTRA-BIBLICAL EXTRA-DIMENSIONAL SPECULATION.......2004-08-02
Rarely have I seen such speculative extra-Biblical theologizing in a purportedly Christian book.
Several things are commendable, such as references to the death of Christ for sinners, evangelical truths like God's sovereignty and man's accountable agency, the Trinity, Jesus' Deity, reality of the afterlife and God as Creator. There is a definite evangelistic appeal to readers to consider the claims of Christ and the abundant evidence in Scripture (Primary Order) and nature (Secondary Order) of God's powerful existence. Also evident is the author's sincerity in embracing scientific interpretation of physics data.
He is Persuaded, but alas not Persuasive in this arena.
String-theory seems to be the flesh and blood of this book's plot. Unfortunately, it is a highly hypothetical, still-in-protoresearch-phase area of physics bordering on metaphysics. It has but scanty observational, scientific-method data and a few creative equations to bolster the rare physicists who consider it even to lie within the bounds of 'True Science'. Unfortunately, the author seems to consider it well within the realm of plausibility, possibility, probability, preponderance. His pronouncements throughout the book give the impression of fait accompli. For him, String-theory is the sine qua non that is the long lost rapprochement and Unification Factor bridging the gap between physics-metaphysics and theology.
And here lies the main troubling aspect of the author's faith opinions: trying to enlist a speculative-at-best physics novelty to unravel knotty theological problems in Christian Doctrines without resorting to the Bible itself first and foremost. His extra-Biblical approach gets him deeper and deeper into hypothetical extra-dimensional realms of imagination.
For those interested in a more thorough rebuttal of the Beyond-the-Cosmos notions postulated here, check the web for the article by William Lane Craig reviewing this book pointing out the manifest errors and mal-interpretations of Scripture.

For Lovers of Romance Novels.......2000-03-13
I really enjoyed this novel not only because it is a romance, but also for the mainstream quality it has about it. I loved spending my evening with the characters of Nina and Addison. It was a pleasant way to relax.
Great Read.......2000-01-06
Nina Sterling had been in love with Addison Wagner since they were in high school. He intervened when some thugs were going to attack her down the street from where she was living with her foster parents.
Nina beat the odds and made something of herself. She wanted to make a difference because of the way the Foster Care System treated children in their care.
Addison Wagner was a man that had his heart broken. Because of that he treated all women as just conquests with no commitment. His relationship with Nina started that way, but he started to feel something more for her.
In this story, people learn to love, trust and depend on each other. Good job Sinclair
A Real Good Story!.......1999-11-17
Talk about a book like the old Marvelette's song "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" well that is what happens to Dr. Addison Wagner with Dr. Nina Sterling. This was a very interesting story and very well written by this author. I truly enjoyed this novel and look forward to many more books by this author.
Fantastic!.......1999-03-11
This is a tender and sensual romance. The writing is wonderful as well.I recommend it highly.
Excellent romance reading at its best!.......1998-11-27

cool.......2006-11-17
I wasn't expecting this book to be that great, but it was. The characters are very realistic. It's about a young girl who wants to be a star. She broke up with her boyfriend, but then wants him back. Meanwhile, a new boy shows up. Turns up that he is the son of a big movie star. Find out more! It's really good!
WOW!!.......2006-10-13
I used this book for a book report, now im not into reading much but this book was the best one i have ever read. I love to act so it was a great book for me. it took me about two weeks to read it but wonderful book. If your doing a book report there are lots of charaters. Ilove that book
Awesome Book!.......2006-07-17
There is simply no other way to put it-- this book is hilarious. I was lying on my bed reading it and laughing out loud! If you love humor with a touch of everything else this book is perfect. It ends off perfectly. At first I thought the book looked a little babyish, but it was just sooo awesome. Enjoy!
Wasn't On My To Do List, but..........2006-06-02
I almost didn't read this book because of the cover. Sounds horrible, I know, never judge a book by it's cover. But the girl on the cover looked about eleven years old and it didn't seem very interesting. But I read the back, and I thought, maybe I'll read this sometime. So I put it aside, and then one day I picked it up, and started reading, and I didn't stop until I was done.
This is a cute book about a girl named Jessica (who is still in highschool, but NOT eleven years old!) who wants to act. Then a guy named Jordan moves to her town, and... actually, you should read the book.
What I thought when I first picked up the book was that it would be poorly written. On the contrary, I found the writing to be funny, the heroine to be funny and smart. I appreciated everything that happened, and the honest way the author wrote the book.
It was a good read. The only thing that was wrong with it was it's length - I wanted more. :)
So I guess the morale was never to judge a book by it's cover - you may be pleasantly surprised.
Lights, Camera, ACTION!!!.......2006-03-09
Did you ever think that a good book would start with two identical Honda Civics? I know one that does! Read Janette Rallison's book Fame, Glory, and Other Things on My To-Do List to find out how. It is about a talented, young actress named Jessica. At her school, they are putting on a version of Romeo and Juliet and she is determined to get the lead. When Jessica realizes that a new boy at her school is really the son of the famous actor Christopher Hunter, she gets very excited and comes up with a plan to meet him. This book is an exciting page turner! Pick it up and you won't be able to put it down! So join Jessica, and the rest of the club! Lights, cameras, ACTION!
Book Description
This novel probes and reveals the hitherto untold full story of the massacre of torpedo squadrons at Midway. The historical record has covered over the obsoleteness of the planes, the lack of fuel, the dud torpedoes, and many other deficiencies which are discovered in preparations for battle by pilots who die in the attack on the Japanese fleet. Clay Hunt, the book's hero, and his squadron mates struggle to live with a fate that develops at sea and with their wives and lovers. Poor tactics and deadly command mistakes are opened up in a description of a scandalous coverup.

Death of a torpedo squadron.......2007-08-23
There was more than enough info for the author to have expanded on the story line. Instead, he wrote a term paper. Both books were complete rip off's, overpriced to boot. I threw both of them away.
Midway: A historical novel.......2005-12-20
I very much enjoyed the book. It was one of intensity at times and one that was able to take you back 60+ years into the ready room. You could smell the smells and feel the tension.
I didn't particularly like the use of profanity, graphic at times, when referring to his times with Claire. Sure, they may have thought or spoke that way back then but save the 4-letter words for the smut novels. Thought that detracted from the class of the story, I was still able to enjoy the rest of the book, just skipping past any of the love life.
I would have preferred the use of real names as they dealt with the real characters. Other historical novels have successfully done this; Gods and Generals, Killer Angels.
It's an easy read that keeps you drawn in and educates you at the same time. If not for the unnecessary profanity, I would share the novel with my 13 year old.
The Battle of Midway told in novel form.......2005-01-09
Alvin Kernan was an aviation ordnanceman (AOM3/c) aboard the USS Enterprise during the Battle of Midway in June, 1942. After the war he commenced a long career as a college professor at both Yale and Princeton, and thus is uniquely qualified to write about the epic battle. "Love and Glory" is his latest work. It tells the whole story of the first day of the battle, focusing mainly on the USS Hornet air group and the tragic saga of Torpedo Squadron 8 (VT-8).
"Love and Glory," as you might deduce from the title, is not another history book about the Battle of Midway. Instead it's a novel with the historic battle as its setting. It's a work of fiction, but it's authentic historical fiction. The protagonist is one Ensign Clay Hunt, a brand new naval aviator assgined to VT-8 aboard the Hornet. We follow the experiences of ENS Hunt as he qualifies in the painfully obsolete TBD torpedo bomber, and as he assimulates into the squadron, under the leadership of its colorful commander. We then ride with him as the air group launches on the first day of the battle, on its way to a bitter destiny.
Kernan pulls no punches in his dialogue--he is unmerciful toward the Hornet's air group commander before, during, and especially after the battle. He also gives no slack to the ship's captain, having him deliberately conspire to falsify Hornet's after-action report in order to save his own hide as well as that of his buddy, the CHAG (Commander, Hornet Air Group). If you're familiar with the details of the Battle of Midway, you know that this is the heart of a burning controversy that has never been fully settled. The author's treatment of it is hightly interesting and provocative.
The book is not without flaws, but they're not too signficant. Professor Kernan didn't use an independent editor in preparing his manuscript, so you'll find a few glitches that should have been fixed before publication. There's a couple instances where proper naval terminology is not used, although it won't stand out if you've never walked a gray steel deck or been summoned to chow by a bos'n's whistle. And I think many readers will be taken aback by Kernan's choices for the fictional names of some of the well-known principals from the battle. I thought "Lancing Colt" for the TF-16 chief of staff (Miles Browning) was a little clever, but some of the other ficticious names struck me as odd. If I were writing this same novel, I'd have used the actual historical names, as was done in the 1976 "Midway" movie (which had a lot more fiction in it than this book).
But don't get lost in such minor quibbles--the value of "Love and Glory" is its realistic dialogue, written by one who was there at the time and is thus intimately familiar with such dialogue. It's a very entertaining read, despite the flaws.

Book Description
Can you find love in Love, Virginia? Is there inspiration in Inspiration, Arizona? Brad Herzog took stock of his Generation X lifestyle and didn't like what he discovered. So he and his wife emptied their bank accounts, packed everything into a Winnebago, and set a course for a fabled America they weren't sure existed. What began as a literal search for the small places on the map became a figurative examination of the small places of the heart, a quest for virtues lost amid negativity and disillusionment. From Justice, West Virginia, where one-half the population descends from the Hatfields and McCoys, to Harmony, California, a town that's up for sale and can be yours for the right price, States Of Mind eloquently and intelligently brings into focus an American psyche often blurred by intersecting cultures -- and is, ultimately, an unforgettable journey all its own.

Finding Spirit in America's Nooks and Crannies.......2005-08-22
Can one find faith in Faith, South Dakota? Or love in Love, Virginia? Or inspiration in Inspiration, Arizona? These are just three of the eighteen locations that author Brad Herzog visits in STATES OF MIND, his aptly titled and well-written travel memoir. While criss-crossing the United States, the internal worlds of harmony, inspiration, truth or consequences, comfort, pride, hope, triumph, glory, love, justice, bliss, unity, friendship, honor, faith, freedom, wisdom, and joy all collide with their more realistic communities by the same name.
The search for these flea speck sized towns becomes an internal quest as Brad and Amy (the author's wife) jump aboard an RV and try to discover their own answers to these almost ethereal locations. And it's quite an enjoyable trip for the reader, too.
Mr. Herzog's grasp of human nature and language is admirable and compelling, and pulls the reader into the book with such wondrous passages as: "West Virginia was a state conceived by secession, created by war, raised by irreconcilable differences. When the smoke cleared in 1866, the state constructed its first public institution - a lunatic asylum. And in a not entirely unrelated event, a family named Hatfield cultivated an extreme dislike for a family named McCoy."
So, as you can see, the author also gets us into some history of the locations we're visiting, which I found refreshing and, as it turned out, necessary to the understanding of how the towns of Hope, Joy, etc. got their names.
As we travel with our two wayward souls through these backwoods, we also feel the desperation of the author as he tries (often in vain) to find meaning in the towns via their names. In a hilarious and ultimately sad portion of the book, Mr. Herzog prepares to find inspiration in Inspiration, Arizona, only to find out that the community no longer exists. Is inspiration unattainable if the town of the same name has vanished?
My favorite portion of the book, however, was when they roll into Faith, South Dakota, and Mr. Herzog has to confront his own beliefs in God (the town has six churches within a population of 540) as he meets with two ministers to find out how much faith there is in Faith. Getting into the town held its own righteous significance, too, as they encountered golfball sized hail and a swarm of locust: "In the story of Exodus, locusts followed hail. I found our succession of plagues that day ironic, it being a journey to Faith and all, and ominous, my faith being in question. Keeping a lookout for boils and frogs, I collected my doubts and looked for the proper outlet for vocalizing and examining them."
Although I love the way this author zings his prose at us, I felt pretty let down by the ending. Perhaps the author wasn't sure how to put the book to rest. Or, maybe, that's part of the journey, not knowing, nor wanting, to end it. For a journey, that's fine. But for a book of discovery, I expected something more than simply chatting with a seven-year-old.
Even so, this is a great look at small town America and how our own states of mind can take us on a fantastic journey.
If you can't afford a Winnebago..........2005-04-25
...reading this book is the next best thing! Once I got over the jealousy I felt that this young couple was able to just quit life for a few months and travel around the country, I really got into this book and the adventures they shared in small town America. I especially enjoyed the general theme of the book being looking for values and traits such as faith, hope, and love in places actually called Faith, Hope, and Love, among others.
I could really understand and relate with Brad Herzog and his wife Amy, wanting to get out and see what life in America is really about outside of suburbia. As I'm sure many of us would determine had we taken this same trip, life involves some surprises, both good and bad, and it's up to us to discover what's truly underneath the cover of people, experiences, and life itself.
Until you and your someone special can drop everything and spend months on the interstates and backroads of the USA, this book is a very good substitute!
This is my dream!.......2001-08-29
This is the first book that I have picked up in a long time, and I can't seem to put it down. The author has lived my dream, so for the time being, I can live my dream vicariously through his writings. Mr. Herzog has enabled me, through his writing style, to visualize every little detail of his journey, making his journey mine as well. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever dreamed of seeing America, but is lacking the motivation to act. Thank you, Brad Herzog!
"Millionaire" Contestant's Book Finds "Fate"?.......2001-06-05
Brad Herzog has written an entertaining volume that is a combination of travelogue, history lesson, and even a bit of spiritual introspection. Each chapter is devoted to a small town in America named after a "state of mind." Sometimes the name is well-earned (such as Triumph, a Louisiana town destroyed by hurricanes) other times the name can be quite ironic (Justice, home to the legendary Hatfield and McCoy clans in West Virginia).
Herzog gives readers a fascinating history of each town, before setting off to meet some of the townspeople. A member of the often maligned "Generation X," the author also philosophically delves into the "state of mind" of each place - examining Faith in South Dakota, looking for Love in Virginia, and uncovering Honor in Michigan. There are many lessons to be learned by the "characters" Herzog and his wife, Amy, meet along the way. For those of us living in metropolitan areas, the book is as well an eye-opening look into life in a small town (many of which seem to be in deep decline).
As many, I became aware of this book when Herzog was on the game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire." It is nice to know that this book received plenty of free (and well-earned) publicity thanks to that appearance.
Great Concept, Indifferent Execution.......2001-05-15
I was sold on the concept of States of Mind - the idea of looking for various virtues in towns of the same name (Hope, Unity, etc.) Unfortunately I was disappointed by the writing.
Herzog developed a formula for this book and doggedly stuck with it. Every piece has a similar structure: 1. Talk about the virtue the town is named for. 2. Give a quick rundown of the route to get to the town (I thought if he "climbed aboard" any more highways I would puke. 3. Give a long, often dull history of the town. 4. Interview a couple of people; in many cases there seems to be no rational for chosing whom to interview except their availablitiy. 5. Give a paragraph or two of commentary, them move on to next town and repeat.
Amy, Herzog's wife and the photographer for the trip, rarely is mentioned. There is no window into how the trip affected their relationship. There is no commentary on how they adjusted to living in an RV. There are few casual encounters with other travelers. The result is a set of newspaper style features that I found unrewarding. I was also concerned because one town I know intimately (Unity, NH) and there were factual errors in that chapter. I don't know about the other towns, but I did wonder how accurate the material was. All in all, it was a great concept, but a lifeless book.

Book Description
Christian Marriage - "Marriage is not a man thing, IT'S A GOD THING". Marriage can be greatly rewarding, but it must be the right mix of heart, soul, and spirit. You must be on one accord. Love must be the pure fuel that serves as a catalyst to keep the fires of passion and desire burning. Midnight oil should be burning because of intimate desire, not arguing or complaining about each other's shortcomings. Every opportunity should be to express love for each other, both inwardly and outwardly.
In Genesis 2:24 we read, "A man shall leave his mother and father, and cleave to his wife, and they shall be one flesh." From the very beginning, GOD instituted marriage for mankind; He knows what it is and how to make it work. When He made woman, He created a beautiful, magnificent, and intelligent being as a helpmate for man. Therefore, marriage is not a man thing, it's a GOD Thing! Man did not create the institution of marriage. GOD knows what marriage is and what it's for-a union between a man and a woman. Carl Smith sheds light on the true meaning of this wonderful partnership and what the Creator's intent and purpose for it is. You will walk away from these inspiring and enlightening words with a clearer understanding of your role and purpose in God's plan. "When Jesus was invited to a wedding, he performed a miracle by turning water into wine; he can perform a miracle in your marriage today; just trust in him, believe in him, and have faith in him! To GOD Be The Glory!"

It's not about us! It's about God!.......2003-08-06
In the book "From Mourning to Morning", Harry and Cheryl Salem share with us the heart wrenching story of the home going of their daughter, Gabrielle. The faith, hope, and strength that the Salems' hold onto through their journey with Gabrielle is unbelievable...and only attainable through their love for Jesus.
As I read this book, which was nearly impossible to put down, I had a renewed sense of hope and a definite increase in faith. Very inspirational.
God's ways are not our ways!.......2001-06-02
Well written, this book answers many questions that people have about sickness, death and dying. It is a very positive book that while reading, I senced the very presence of God. There is no doubt in my mind that Cheryl & Harry and their entire family allowed God to use this book to help uplift and restore many people who are struggling with the tragedies of life.
