Excellent book!.......2007-02-05
I'm a beginner, unfortunately without hours a day to dedicate to practice. I do like to sit down with my pad and some sticks whenever I get a chance though. That being said, this book is very easy to understand, with no super-technical text or music notation. It's something anyone can pick up and start using right away.
Coupled with my Korg MA-30 metronome, this book has helped me improve so much that I decided to keep a log of metronome speeds over the last few weeks. Every time I sit down to practice, I write down the metronome speed for each exercise that I can play at with no mistakes. I have gone up 10 beats per minute (as high as 14 on some simpler ones) over a few weeks, in just a few minutes a day! Well, it's a lot for me :)
The funny thing is, I haven't even made it past the first page of exercises yet. For a beginner like me, they are difficult enough for now. When I get good enough at the first page, I'll move on to the second, and so forth. This further cements the book's value, there is enough material in here for a lifetime of learning, and if you're already a pro, enough material to keep you conditioned.
I'm still very slow but I can see benefit every day in both speed and timing. If you get this book and stay with it, I bet you will too. I recommend keeping a log so you can track your progress! Positive reinforcement will only make you want to practice more!
A must have for any drummer...........2006-10-13
I had been playing about 15 years before I discovered this book and it's companion book "Accents and Rebounds". I had been gigging heavily, practicing hours and hours a day (mainly rock/fusion/funk), owned 20+ books, 15 or so videos, but somehow never owned a copy of these two books. These books are full of simple exercises I truly think anyone can do. After practicing just the few first pages of both books at different tempos and at different volume levels for a few weeks I noticed a drastic improvement in my playing skills. I mean it when I say drastic. I could play much faster than ever before, but more importantly I could play cleanly and effortlessly. By this I mean, that when I later improvised on the drum kit I could certainly play many things I couldn't just a month prior. This is after playing and practicing hard for 15 years! Studying these two books took me up a whole "notch" in just a month! Also things that gave me trouble before or were just played sloppily were now clean, tight, precise, with a much broader range of dynamics and accesnts and I could play them much faster if I wanted or needed to. While on paper these are basically exercises for just your hands, you can certainly do these patterns as written but with your feet. Or do the exercises as written with your hands but make up simple foot patterns to play at the same time (i.e. qtr note kicks with hat on 2 and 4, or play the hat on the "and's", etc. your imagination is the only limit). These two books are essential and I recommend them to any drummer at any level. They won't teach you how or what to play, but they will take your technique to higher and higher levels. It has allowed me to play what I hear in my mind on the spot, just the way I want it. This was roughly 5 years ago and I'm still incredibly thankful for Mr. Stone and these two books. Every drummer I meet I try to spread the word.
Best of luck, relax, and have fun!
Control your sticks.......2006-08-07
I recently purchased book locally - sorry Amazon. Will help your snare drum technique immensely. Even looking through the book without practicing on snare or drum pad will guide your mind and playing to better musicality. One of my students seems more interested in it than other books on the market. More for snare study, although, as I usually say, once you learn it one place, you can apply it anywhere - i.e. drum set, aux. percussion, etc.
The first choice for developing your stick technique!!.......2006-03-17
This is THE book on stick-technique! If you're gonna buy just one book to use for stick-practicing - this is it! Singles, doubles, combinations and even the buzzroll are all covered thoroughly. You don't have to be a master-reader to understand the exercises. They are short, easy-read and still far from boring. The level of difficulty changes along with the speed you select on your metronome. In other words; you can buy this book and practice meaningfully with it for the rest of your drumming career. And that really says it all.
"Stick Control" has been on the market for a very long time but is still hot and recommended by many of the drumming legends like, for example, Peter Erskine.
You can use it even if you don't have a drumset. All you need is a pair of sticks and a metronome (and preferably a practice pad).
GREAT BOOK!!!
BASIC.......2005-10-11
This is a excellent compliment to any teaching curriculum.
I also recommend "Military Drum Beats" by the same publisher; but is hard to find.

Here is the first book in the blockbuster trilogy that chronicles the never-before-told story of the young Han Solo. Set before the Star Wars movie adventures, these books chronicle the coming-of-age of the galaxy's most famous con man, smuggler, and thief.
The first book in this exciting new Han Solo series begins with a recounting of Han's late teen years and shows us how he escaped an unhappy adopted home situation to carve out an adventurous new life for himself as a pilot. Han Solo, the handsome rogue, is every girl's dream man, and every boy's hero.
The Paradise Snare is another stellar Star Wars production, complete with original music and sound effect

good story about Han Solo's past.......2007-06-24
This book is the first of a trilogy about Han Solo prior to where we meet him in the Star Wars movies. It explores Han Solo's childhood/teen years and the later books in the trilogy lead in to how he met Chewbacca, Lando, and started working for Jabba the Hutt. Definitely recommend this.
The Han Solo Trilogy consists of:
The Paradise Snare
The Hutt Gambit
Rebel Dawn
the perfect launch for our favorite star wars pilot!.......2007-06-15
A.C. Crispin. When I first got this book and saw the author it rang a bell but I couldn't quite place the name. Then I looked inside the jacket and saw that she authored one of my favorite Star Trek novels, Yesterday's Son. As soon as I saw that I became even more hopeful that this was going to be a really good read and I was NOT let down at all!
From beginning to end, this book just feels 'right'. That's the best way I can think to describe it. As a Star Wars fan since I was a kid (who just recently got back into it through reading the expanded universe books) I was always curious as to how Han got his start. What made him tick, his early years as it were. What made him the seemingly self centered, reluctant hero that we were introduced to in the original film. This book delivers completely. Through flashbacks, we learn of hands childhood and see him in the 'present' in his late teens.
This book is a real page turner with great characters and plenty of Star Wars references and lore for the avid fan, but not so bogged down in obscurities that casual fans will be left scratching their heads. One only needs to be a fan of great stories and science fiction in general, not even star wars specfically, to enjoy this story. If you are a Star Wars fan, then you'll most likely be grinning at some of the names and places mentioned, without a doubt.
Definetly a worthy and enjoyable starting point for a character we thought we knew for years. Highly recommended!
not my Han Solo.......2007-03-23
This book, though midly entertaining, is not for the old school Star Wars fans that grew up on the original Trilogy. The Han Solo Trilogy lacks the stories of a scoundrel that I expected. This trilogy also has glaring contradictions and plot holes when taken with the movies and other Star Wars books. This book is for the younger Star Wars fan, the generation that believes Greedo shot first.
Early Han Solo.......2007-03-16
Ms Crispin has written a trilogy of Han Solo books to introduce us to the character and give us his background before we meet him in the films in a cantina in Mos Eisley. The first of these books is The Paradise Snare. In this volume we begin with Han's childhood as a street urchin on Corellia when he had no steady source of income, didn't know who his parents were, and survived by foraging for scraps of food. His life changes when the scoundrel Garris Shrike takes him away to join a band of spacefaring criminals. He lives on the ship Trader's Luck and earns his keep by participating in pickpocketing and various types of scams. His only friend on the ship is the Wookie Dewlanna.
However, Han's dream is to become an Imperial Navy pilot. He realizes that after ten years on Trader's Luck he is making no progress towards his goal. He forces his way off of Trader's Luck in a violent confrontation with Shrike and is successful only due to the intervention of his friend Dewlanna. Unfortunately she loses her life in order to help Han get free.
Han then ends up on the planet Ylesia - a steaming world of religious fanaticism where pilgrims are willingly processing spices for the Besadii Hutt crime family. During this period Han becomes an excellent pilot, meets a Corellian pilgrim named Bria Tharen, and plots their escape from Ylesia when they realize that the Hutts are really running a slave trade under the guise of religion. Han and Bria manage an exciting escape from the planet and create chaos as they do it. They end up in love and together on Coruscant as Han attempts to enter the Imperial Space Academy. Of course, as the book ends, things are not going smoothly. But that is what one would expect. After all, The Paradise Snare is the first book of three.
The author has given us an excellent look at the young Han Solo and has created a history for the character where we didn't have one before. Some of his actions in Episodes IV-VI will have more meaning now. I look forward to the next two books.

Not a good reference to snare a millionaire.......2005-07-16
This book provides no details to show you how to snare a millionaire. It shows you how to get a man or how to keep a relationship going; but no suggestion as how to get a rich and good looking guy of your dreams. The authour may have dated a lot of guys with money; but if she could not get a rich guy for herself then why you want to listen to her advise on this subject matter?
Why is everyone so down on this book?VERY GOOD ADVICE!!.......2004-02-14
I read the "reviews" on this book and I have to say I was very surprised. I have read this twice and yes, some of it is common sense, but some people DO NOT know basic etiquette, (ex. not to swear in front of other, etc.) Even things like "picking one's ears" in public. I , too have seen this and was appalled!Lisa is TRYING to help women, here. She tells you thing like quality men do not want a bleached blonde with huge silicone breasts.(Not for a wife anyway)I have dated many wealthy men and have found this to be true.(And YES I did marry one, also) I do think that Ginie Polo Sayles book is by far the best ever written on the subject as far as meeting wealthy men, but Lisa's book gives great advice as far as public behavior, not having sex too soon, having good manners and VOCABULARY.I personally think Ginie's book emphasizes sex TOO much and men may lose interest or think of you as a toy.
Overall, Lisa has a good book that helps you cultivate your mind and KEEP a quality man but not so great ideas about meeting them.Get Ginies book to meet them, Lisa'a will help you in your social graces.
A Few Questions for The Author.......2004-01-11
The reviews say that Lisa A. Johnson's book offers good suggestions on how to be a good companion and not a gold digger: I am glad about it. Yet, she is advising on how to date not just anybody, but specifically THE RICH. Does she mean that the rest of us is not entitled to the same self-confidence and emotional support in a companion? Are we honest, sensitive, understanding, compassionate common men (teachers, small businness owners, musicians, employees, local journalists etc.) condemned to be our self-despising girfriends' cheapo-free therapists?
Nothing you didn't already know, I have better suggestions!!.......2003-10-10
You already know everything written in this book! It's ok, not totally horrible, and it's not boring, but you shouldn't waste your money on this!
Girls, girls, if you're bombshell material buy
"The Bombshell Manual of Style" by Laren Stover, Ruben Toledo; if you're a good old fashioned girl with morals and standards, if you're married buy "Fascinating Womanhood" by Helen B. Andelin if you're single buy "The Fascinating Girl" by Helen Andelin it's absolutely beautiful!! Well just don't buy this, it's really not worth your money!
Basically Improper.......2002-02-01
If you have had little or no exposure to North American culture or media, this book would provide you with all of the fundamentals of the upper class. Beyond that, Lisa Johnson's advice seems largely based upon common sense or on how to not be lower class. Very little useful specific information is given. I also disliked the author's approach to meeting people. In the unlikely event that one does see a millionaire in the 7-11, it's just not the sort of place that one socializes and properly meets people. Yet that's just the sort of thing that is suggested by the author. The general lack of propriety in her methods is what makes this book poor instruction unless you really need the basics. Try Ginie Polo Sayles's book for something a bit more useful.

There are very few classics in the field of pop culture--the academic stuff tends to be too dry and the fun stuff is too quickly dated. This book by Luc Sante is the exception--in fluid prose liberally sprinkled with astute metaphors, Sante tells the story of New York's Lower East Side, circa 1840-1920. The personal histories of criminals, prostitutes, losers, and swindlers bring to life the social and statistical history that the author has meticulously researched. Not limiting himself to the usual sources, Sante finds his history in old copies of Police Gazette as well as actual police, fire, and social service records. Above all, what really makes this book work is the writing, which brings to life a culture of the streets that continues to form a silent influence on our contemporary popular culture.
Book Description
Luc Sante's Low Life is a portrait of America's greatest city, the riotous and anarchic breeding ground of modernity. This is not the familiar saga of mansions, avenues, and robber barons, but the messy, turbulent, often murderous story of the city's slums; the teeming streets--scene of innumerable cons and crimes whose cramped and overcrowded housing is still a prominent feature of the cityscape.
Low Life voyages through Manhattan from four different directions. Part One examines the actual topography of Manhattan from 1840 to 1919; Part Two, the era's opportunities for vice and entertainment--theaters and saloons, opium and cocaine dens, gambling and prostitution; Part Three investigates the forces of law and order which did and didn't work to contain the illegalities; Part Four counterposes the city's tides of revolt and idealism against the city as it actually was.
Low Life provides an arresting and entertaining view of what New York was actually like in its salad days. But it's more than simpy a book about New York. It's one of the most provocative books about urban life ever written--an evocation of the mythology of the quintessential modern metropplois, which has much to say not only about New York's past but about the present and future of all cities.
Customer Reviews:
Endlessly entertaining... a corrective view of the "good old days".......2007-08-07
If you ever cherished any rosy notions about multi-generational families, striving immigrants, and wholesome American values of the past, this rollicking book will serve as a much-needed eye-opener. With endless fascinating detail, Sante paints a picture of a wide-open city on the make, preying on the innocent and the scheming alike. Housing, entertainment, brothels, bars, pushcarts, reformers...all take their place in this look at life on the Lower East Side in the years of massive immigration. For all of us with immigrant ancestry, a salutary look at everything those amazing folks survived.
Yup, it's good! .......2006-12-14
Luc Sante did an amazing job at presenting life in New York during the early times.
I bought this book along with GOTHAM and GANGS OF NEW YORK and I've enjoyed reading all three books about the "true" history of New York.
Fantastic.......2006-11-11
I just moved to New York City and wanted to read a history of the city that had a different perspective than a typical historical non-fiction book. The book was highly enjoyable: well-written and thorough, with tons of incredible photographs, tidbits and stories. It was well-organized and flowed well. I highly recommend this book.
Low Life, High Interest.......2006-04-04
Fascinating, engaging read that never bores nor lectures. Luc Sante gives us the history of New York City's lower rungs of the economic ladder from the early 1800's to the early 1900's, when the "City" was just the isle of Manhattan, when crime and poverty was more prevelant and diversified and, to the modern reader, more romantic despite the horrors inherent.
Eye Opener.......2004-10-24
I am a life long resident of New York & I am ashamed that I had a scant knowledge of the city that I love. Low Life changed all that. Low Life proves that the history of New York is both lurid and fascinating. Since reading Low Life, I have read several more histories of the city but Luc Sante's remains by far and away my favorite.
My advice: if you want to truly understand New York, read this book.

Buddy Rich's Modern Interpretation of Snare Drum Rudiments contains a systematic course for the beginner, and is a great value to the teacher and professional who wishes to increase his knowledge of rudiments. In additon to the elementary principles of music, there are eighty-three lessons of exercises and rudiment, twenty-one reading exercises, ten exercises employing rudiments and advanced rhythmic studies.
Customer Reviews:
This book is the best book to improve your drumming.......2006-05-15
Whoever wrote the first review has no idea what they are talking about because this book has everything to do with Buddy Rich. It was written by his teacher (Henry Adler) because Buddy could not read music. This book includes rudiments which you do first in singles then bouce them out. Trust me this that is how this book is taught and used correctly. I know that because my private instructor is the man who revised the book and also took lessons with Henry Adler. This book is useful to anyone that plays drums including highly talented and experienced players. This book if used regularly and correctly will get your hands into the best shape possible, for matched and traditional players. I would highly reccomend this book to any one looking to get their hands in shape and wanting a strong base for their drumming.
"Buddys" book.........2004-02-04
Lets be clear on this, Buddy did not write a single lession in this book, not to take anyting away from his gift but music notation was not his thing, He signed up for the cash and was given a lump sum for his name and a few pictures...Having said that, the book is fine for learning how to progress with your rudiments.
so-so primer that has nothing to do with Buddy Rich.......2003-08-17
This isn't a bad book, but then again, it doesn't have much to delineate itself from other rudiment books, or justify the price tag. It does contain a nice variety of rudiments and variations on rudiments, but it lacks a spiral binding (i.e. - you can't easily put the book up on a music stand), which makes it less than ideal when it comes time to actually try to use the book.
It's copyright 1942, and the pictures of Buddy on the inside seem to be of that era. Otherwise, it has absolutely nothing to do with Buddy Rich; the book appears to have been written by Henry Adler.
Good book, but "stick" to the truth..........2003-05-20
It is a well known fact that Buddy never learned to read music and played everything "by ear." This book is a wonderful tribute in a ironic sort of way, but if one takes anything away from this book, it should be that a successful career in drumming (namely, music) must include learning the mechanics/mathematics of musical notation, the language of drumming (rudiments) and the intrepretation thereof. And, admittedly, I don't know for certain, but my guess is that Buddy probably couldn't have told you the difference between a paradiddle and a ratamacue.
A must have, not only for drummers but for congueros as well.......2000-12-30
I used this book to develop a solid technique in conga drums.

The story of the Salem witchcraft trials is well known, from both historical accounts and dramatic retellings, such as Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. Cornell historian Mary Beth Norton now offers a significant reinterpretation of the events that (by her count) led to legal action against at least 144 people, 54 confessions of witchcraft, 19 hangings, and one "pressing to death ... by heavy stones." Norton's contribution is to contextualize what happened. She studies not just Salem itself, but all of Essex County and northern New England, because so many of the people involved in the witchcraft crisis didn't live in Salem proper. She also says these grim events must be understood in relation to King William's War, which the early Americans called the Second Indian War. This frontier conflict and the religious interpretations thrust upon it created the conditions for what happened in Salem and the surrounding region, which, says Norton, would not have occurred in the war's absence. As might be expected, her narrative does not proceed along traditional lines. It is driven more by the academic imperative to break scholarly ground than by the urge to tell a harrowing story. For readers interested in knowing what really happened at Salem, though, In the Devil's Snare may be the best source. --John J. Miller
Book Description
Award-winning historian Mary Beth Norton reexamines the Salem witch trials in this startlingly original, meticulously researched, and utterly riveting study.
In 1692 the people of Massachusetts were living in fear, and not solely of satanic afflictions. Horrifyingly violent Indian attacks had all but emptied the northern frontier of settlers, and many traumatized refugees—including the main accusers of witches—had fled to communities like Salem. Meanwhile the colony’s leaders, defensive about their own failure to protect the frontier, pondered how God’s people could be suffering at the hands of savages. Struck by the similarities between what the refugees had witnessed and what the witchcraft “victims” described, many were quick to see a vast conspiracy of the Devil (in league with the French and the Indians) threatening New England on all sides. By providing this essential context to the famous events, and by casting her net well beyond the borders of Salem itself, Norton sheds new light on one of the most perplexing and fascinating periods in our history.
Customer Reviews:
Great perspective on the Salem Witchcraft trials.......2007-07-07
Mary Beth Norton is a great historian who does thorough research. In this book, she goes over an old topic but looks at it in a completely new way. She does deal with the issue of why it was primarily women who were accused or doing the accusing. Her main argument, however, is that the witchcraft trials in Salem were a product of the Indian wars. I've studied this topic for a couple years now and this is a refreshing, new approach to the topic. A great, and very easy, read.
Context, context, context!.......2005-10-07
Professor Norton has done us a great service by refusing the prevailing myopia with which most of us analyze the witchcraft accusations of Essex County, Massachusetts in 1692. One cannot simply look at the events themselves, but must allow the gaze to expand to the social, historical, religious and military realities around those events. In the case of Essex County, they combined in a way that could be considered a ticking bomb of sorts.
If you are like me, then the French and Indian Wars exist only on the periphery of your social memory. We all heard about these wars in our school history classes as a prelude to the American Revolution. Militarily, they were a bloody mess and even George Washington is said to have performed in a way that is less than satisfactory. That's about all I remembered.
In the hands of Professor Norton, however, those wars became real to me because they became the context for the suffering of many who were intricately involved in the Essex County witch hysteria. As I read IN THE DEVIL'S SNARE, I heard of settlers on the "Maine frontier" who lost loved ones to savage brutality of the First French and Indian War and who fled from it in the hope of preserving their lives. As soon as hostilities ended these survivors returned. When war broke out for the second time they either fled again or were killed in a brutal manner.
As the author demonstrates, these pious souls believed themselves a shining example of true Christian living. Yet they came to understand themselves to be under siege by the devil. The language they used to describe him and to explain their own terror is starkly synonymous with their descriptions of the enraged native warriors who attacked their settlements, often in retaliation for being cheated and mistreated.
This is not a beginner's book. It is full of exact details, including legal, historical and social analysis. One would do well to begin elsewhere to understand the witch hysteria of 1692. But once you have the general story, turn to Norton's terrific volume for the details. It is insightful and engrossing.
Here's what we know about Salem.......2005-09-03
I've read over a few of the reviews written thus far about In the Devil's Snare, and apparently the other reviewers have reached two conclusions about Mary Beth Norton's work. The first is that it is exhaustive. The second is that the read can be exhausting.
To the first point, Norton has certainly done her research. Looking not only at the people and events in the town, she examines the various effects of Indian wars on the people of the communities. Particularly, she demonstrates how the fear generated by the presumed devilish Indians in the Maine frontier may have primed the villagers - many of them refugees from that conflict - towards higher susceptibility to notions of witchcraft in their midst. But this, though new, is not the only factor. Indeed, there are so many historians have devised over the centuries that even Norton's sizeable work does not address them all in detail. But detail there is, in the close look at the trials and investigations. I think few works will tell as much about so many of the people involved. Also not neglected is some sense of the historiography of this most popular of subjects. Norton is willing to state what is conjecture or just common sense on her own part, and to do the same for other past research.
As far as being exhausting, it is. Consider that most of the cases play out very similarly, with endless questioning and answering by the parties involved. Consider also that many of the daily experiences of the settlers were similar. In short, consider that there's a lot of repetitive material to go over, in depth, with much the same tale told. Though personal opinion only, I didn't find Norton's style to be very engaging, which is surprising considering how much drama has been written about the trials. But monographs are not novels, so the interested reader is simply reminded that this is an informative but far from gripping read.
A Fantastic Study of the Salem Crisis........2004-11-09
Many authors have studied the Witch Trials that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1692, but none has analyzed contemporary events that shaped the lives of the trials' participants seeking to explain how such hysteria could have gripped the population. 'In The Devil's Snare; The Salem Witchcraft Crisis of 1692' does just that, and is a fantastically detailed account of the Trials and events surrounding them.
Mary Beth Norton, who holds the position of Mary Donlon Alger Professor of American History at Cornell and is one of America's most respected historians, has here presented the most complete analysis of the Trials to date. Norton's highly detailed account relies on exhaustive research of surviving texts, both public and private, relating not only to the trials' proceedings but also historical information regarding life in the Bay Colony and on the frontier. She chronicles the wars between the colonists and the Wabanaki Indians, showing how the many battles and massacres preyed upon the minds of the colonists, causing them to be suspicious and fearful, and demonstrating many cross references between events in the Trials and the Indian war. Norton also delves into the social status of women and men at the time of the Trials, illustrating how the Trials gave a group of young women power and prestige in their male-dominated society. Professor Norton completes the book with an impressive series of appendices, including lists of Cases Heard by the Court of Oyer and Terminer, Participants in the Crisis with Ties to the Frontier, etc., etc.
'In the Devil's Snare' should appeal to any with an interest in history in general and especially to those interested in early Colonial history, and is the most complete treatment available of the Salem Witch Trials.
Tedious book.......2004-09-12
The only reason I am reading this book is because it is mandatory for my American history class in college. I am on page 139, and Mary Norton has still not even remotely reached an accessible theory. I don't know if she's going to or not. One can only hope. To say this is the worst book I've ever read would be an exaggeration, but not a great one. Mary Norton CANNOT make a cohesive point. She rambles extensively and flips about in time, so even if you were familiar enough with the story to know what happened, you'd still probably have a hard time following this account. It's nearly impossible to keep track of what's going on, and just when you think you might have a weak grasp on the story, she goes into a completely unrelated topic. I think she is trying to link them together, but the book moves so incredibly slowly that by the time you've finished a page, you've forgotten what happened before then. It's just a singularly dry (and under-edited) account of an interesting incident in history. I would not recommend this book for voluntary reading.

The Snare answers tough questions........2005-10-22
The author gives you answers and guidance from her own experience and those of others in dealing with being single or single again when it comes to sexual entanglements. She does not mince words, but follows the guidelines God's Word gives us. She also gives examples of real situations. It is also relevant for married people who want to know how to avoid inappropriate sexual entanglements with others, and gives examples of situations that can lead to inappropriate entanglements. I have read the book once and intend to read it again.

This book contains the both the safeguard wisdom and diagnosis advice to help a marriage under temptation. It was a blessing to me when I researching for, "Surviving Temptataion Island." DaveDavidson.com
Insightful and penetrating.......1998-08-24
This book provides an excellent look at the reality of sexual intimacy, and the power it has to cause trouble if not carefully managed.
Rabey's insight into the attitudes and habits of both men and women is both reassuring and unsettling. It's refreshing to read an author who understands what men & women go through - but disturbing that she seems to know us almost too well! She calls us all to the carpet on the true motives behind much of what we consider "innocent" behavior, shooting straight without being too "preachy".
Fans of Dr. Laura will find this work a similar call for accountability in an age of relative mores and sexual abandon. Far from leaving the reader feeling shamed and defeated, the ultimate impact of "The Snare" is to open our eyes to the reality of sexual intimacy, it's beauty, it's purpose, and it's power.
High explosives are a helpful invention, serving many useful purposes - but you wouldn't want to mis-handle them. Ms. Rabey points out that sexual intimacy, like dynamite, can be dangerous when used in the wrong way.
