Customer Reviews:
Beginner handbook.......2007-01-11
I have not done as much work as I might have liked, so I have opened the book relatively little. In what little I have used it, it has been more reassuring than helpful--for instance, the book confirmed that the rear hatch lifter supports come without the entire ball-joint assembly, and that there is little one can do about this. Not really helpful, but reassuring for someone who wonders what is going on.
I consider the book satisfactory for its purposes, and I am glad I own it.
Haynes manuals explain best!.......2006-11-15
In my opinion, short of an actual manufacturer's shop manual, you can't beat a Haynes book for completeness. And, given that they are written for the non-professional, in some ways they are far superior. Based on complete engine tear-down and rebuild, and covering standard repairs and maintainence, I never buy anything else.
If you are even reasonably handy, like to save money on basic (or even complex) repairs, this is the book for you.
Subaru Legacy, 1990-1998: Includes Legacy Outback and Legacy Brighton (Haynes Manuals).......2006-08-14
This manual was needed urgently for guidance on performing a front and rear brake pad replacement. The task was made easier by referring to the series of photos showing the steps in removal and replacement of the disc pads. This book will be useful in the future as more systems wear on my 2002 Outback.
Rockhopjohn.......2006-01-21
I have owned 3 Subaru Outbacks, 1996, 1998, and 2004, and I have found this manual to be useful with all of them. I am only doing the home mechanic types of repairs, so for things like changing and bleeding brakes, spark plugs, fuel filters, thermostats, it has saved me a lot of guess work. Not sure I would want it if I had to do a timing belt or head gaskets, or any other sort of major engine tear down. Great manual for GENERAL MAINTENANCE.
As good as it gets.......2005-01-02
This manual does pale in comparison to a Bently, but so do all other manuals. I have found that the manual is an excellent guide for anyone with some mechanical know-how, and it provides the most comprehensive information available. There are things that are a little inacurate that I have found, or have seen other sources that contradict how things work... But even the Subaru factory repair manuals have this problem. My major criticism of this manual is it does not get into describing what are 'common' failures; other Haynes manuals that I have picked up ocasionally hinted at what kinds of failures the owner can 'expect' to experience. In my opinion, there should be an section devoted to the whens, whys and hows of headgasket failure, oil seal leaks, and valve cover leaks. My second criticism is that it doesn't explain part numbers, nor does it describe some repair materials well enough; like saying 'anerobic sealant' or 'gasket maker' where Subaru technical manuals very clearly describe what materials should be used.
Combine this with all the documentation that is out there from the major Subaru message boards, and I doubt there is any repair you can't accomplish. Me? I'm replacing my headgaskets, timing belt and a whole lot of seals this weekend.

Book Description
Now more than ever, Subaru fanatics have a wealth of factory and aftermarket performance upgrades at their disposal. In High-Performance Subaru Builder's Guide, author Jeff Zurschmeide explains in detail the similarities and differences between the Subaru models, and describes how to modify each for performance on the street and at the track. He uses over 300 color photos to show you how to modify your Impreza, Legacy, WRX, or STI for improved acceleration, handling, braking, and style. The book provides detailed chapters explaining how to modify the intake, exhaust, turbocharger, and computer systems for more horsepower and torque--plus info on upgrading your drivetrain to handle all that power. If taking corners is your thing, you'll find chapters on the suspension, steering, chassis, brakes, and wheels and tires. A special chapter even shows you how to get started in your favorite type of racing, including examples of successful racers and their cars.
Customer Reviews:
Everything you wanted to know............2007-09-24
If you are trying to decide what to do with your Subaru, this is the book. The book is a great reference source that puts in one place all the different mods that you can do to your ride. While it is easy to find this on the Internet, having all the information together makes it easy to compare and decide. If you have a Subaru, and want to make upgrades, I suggest you buy this book first, see what's available, and then check out the mods through the message boards and supplier sites to find the right fit for your budget and your skills.
Everything you need to know.......2007-09-11
I love this book because they are not pushing one product or being biased. They do a good job telling you all the things you need to do and the things you need to be careful of doing. It is a must for any Impreza fanatic who wants to modify.
Misleading book title.......2007-08-29
The book's title and editorial review is very misleading. I was expecting a book that will teach me how to do my own modifications on my sub, such as intake, exhaust..etc.. Instead, all this book touches on is what you can or should buy. It describes all the diff type of air intake kit, diff type of turbos, diff type of exhaust and diff type of ecu etc... All the info you can easily get off the internet for free.. Haiz, very dissappointed in this book. The book title should be, buyers guide to aftermarket subaru parts, not builders guide!

Customer Reviews:
Great first sc-fi novel.......2007-08-29
The author is straight on with military life, You could put the characters on a modern navy ship instead of a space-ship and they would fit right in!
The story is fast-paced and with some great action! I highly recommend this for those who like military sc-fi.
When are the sequels arriving! Put me on the per-order list!
Is this MilSIFI or a Romence Novel in wolf skin.......2007-08-16
Last reviewer got it right, so many plot lines and after reading it still not sure what I just read.
Loved the focus on the supply chain folks and lower decks a great move but I image it is hard to keep a plot line moving from that POY, which is why we see so little of it.
My call is read this book and see if she can improve in the next one on the back story and give us more on the world she wants to tells us about.
Maybe she can tell us what the heck a tower, the rocks and the flats are I could not picture this ship in my mind. Loved the DNGO so lets support her efforts here. Less romance more on the world the story is set in, imho.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!.......2007-07-26
I have been reading Sandra McDonald's fiction for over 11 years. I've read many of her short stories and way back when, in another life, I was the flagwaver for her fanfiction. (Don't ask.) So that I'd love her first novel is no great surprise to me. What do I like about it?
The crew of the Aral Sea seems a very realistic portrayal of sailors/ spacefarers. Unlike Star Trek, on McDonald's ship they can't replicate whatever it is they want. When you want a uniform, a machine part or food it is Underway Stores that must store, find and inventory it.
The Aral Sea (a nod to the Vorkosigan saga only in my mind-- these ships are named after environmental disasters) is an unhappy ship and Jodenny is assigned the unhappiest department: Underway Stores, but that's where Terry works. She's an officer and he's enlisted, but that doesn't stop the attraction they have for each other. The mystery of why the ship is so very unhappy is part of what Jodenny & Terry must solve-- and that's terrific, and, well, Bujold-like.
What I also like is that after ~400 pages, I don't know everything about this universe. Why is nearly everybody Australian -- or their forbearers are? Why are so few characters born on Earth? Why did the aliens give this technology and leave? It means that Sandra has many more stories in this series to tell!
Like Bujold's Vorkosigan series in some ways, both are about military & quasi- military ships. Jodenny and Terry would get on very well in the Dendarii Mercenaries. Actually, though, it's more like Tanya Huff's Valor books, with Sergeant Torin Kerr. I'm sure Kerr'd like Terry, but Jodenny... (Kerr, like Terry is enlisted and spends much of her time protecting officers. Unlike Terry, Torin is a warrior.)
Unlike Star Trek and unlike the Vorkosigan series, this isn't about feats of derring do and military prowess. It's about the guys in the red shirts that make the ship go and whose names we never hear. People who are just as courageous, in their way, as Captain Kirk and Miles Vorkosigan, maybe moreso.
"I saw something," Jodenny whispered.
Neither of them moved to investigate. Being in Team Space had never demanded much bravery, Myell knew. It required endurance of petty annoyances and mammoth wastes of time, and the discipline of listening to superiors talk of nonsense and trivia, and the ability to think one way and act another, for days and months and years at a time. He had been truly scared only a few times in his military career-- once while doing firefighting training in boot camp, another when Chiba's men entereted his Security cell duing the Ford affair - but all in all, he could safely say he had never been asked to chase something down in the icy darkness, something only his lieutenant thought she saw.
"There's nothing there," he said.
Military SF... romance?? And it's good? Whoa........2007-07-20
I have to confess that I would never have read this book if I didn't know the author. I usually give military SF a wide berth. ;) And I had a hard time getting into this one; the first few pages whacked me with all the elements that usually turn me off military SF: action and "drama" that's undramatic because you don't know or care about the characters yet, lots of bureaucratobabble about ranks and duties and day-to-day operations, etc.
But once I got past that, I discovered two things: I really liked the protagonist, Jodenny. She's that rarest of female characters in SF -- intelligent but not a genius, pretty but not a sexbomb, competent and level-headed and funny. In short, a normal human woman. And as Jodenny dealt with an increasingly tangled conspiracy web and her inappropriate feelings for one of her subordinates, I more than liked her; I *cared*.
The other thing I realized was, military SF is actually kind of interesting when it's not all about the captain or the admiral or the guy with the big gun. Jodenny's "office politics", her personnel issues (like who's sleeping on the job), her effort to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder while still trying to have a career -- I could really identify with all of this, even though it took place on an Australian spaceship that travels through an alien wormhole. It's plainly military SF, but so real-world and human that it feels like something very different. And better, IMO.
So definitely a recommend. =)
Scattered Fiction..........2007-05-21
The intertwining plots of this book should be explained by a barker worthy of an infomercial: "Call now and you'll get this riveting political thriller of intrigue in the guts of an interstellar spaceship, a hard-edged mystery about the enigmatic aliens who created the mysterious monoliths that exits across space and time... but that's not all! You also hear the heart-touching romance of a man and a woman kept apart my society and rank. And if you call now, you'll also read of one man's attempt to reconcile with his path..."
And, really, that's not all.
There are so many plot lines and crises that it isn't long before they begin to bump into one another. No sooner was a Great Universal Mystery revealed but we were haring back to the ship to deal with corruption in the lower decks, with attendant and unspoken tensions left over from the last awkward interpersonal moment between the two protagonists, but first we had to see... I couldn't shake the feeling that the author had simply kept writing about one line until she realized that she'd neglected another and lead us careening back.
To make this even more frustrating, all of this set in a sketchy starship of unclear construction that's part of a vague interstellar business (I think) that had enemies who opposed them (for some reason) that leads to an attack that destroys a ship in the beginning of the book except even that's in question...
By the end of the book so many plots are being pulled together in such unlikely configurations, requiring that some characters shift their roles and relative importance with all the grace and ease of a Shakespearean comedy, that it managed to be a slog of a read even as things were racing by, the last thirty pages or so being well nigh impenetrable. The book aims to be epic even as it tries to keep its focus square on the lower levels of the company... or society... or whatever it was.
I guess I liked it well enough, it was certainly entertaining for the day or two that I read it, but I certainly wouldn't be in any rush to recommend it to anyone else.

e Intimacy of Inspiration.......2007-02-12
I first saw a picture or two on some program to download desktop photos. I followed some info cuz I was captivated by the Alice pictures. I discovered Robyn's journey, story and this story book. I considered buying a used one, but decided to get a new one. I just love the whole of it and so appreciate the author not only taking the journey but sharing it with the rest of us. Even if some of the sharing was against her original plans. Thanks Robyn. Your journey touches deeply in inexplicable ways.
Inspirational and Engaging Account.......2006-07-09
Although large in size, and filled with breathtaking photographs, this book includes so much more than the regular "picture book". Robyn's thoughtful words make you feel as if you are traveling right along with her and her famous camels. The story is engaging and heart-wrenching; and the reader runs through the same emotions that Robyn feels at each leg of the journey, from the tragedy of loss to the jubilation of completion.
Beautiful and introspective - and very highly recommended.
Lovely, lovely book.......2004-11-25
The combination is a winner because of:
* the stunning page and a half photo spreads of Australian desert and scenes showing Robyn's trek with the camels
* engaging narration by Robyn that shows you the beauty, fear, boredom, and other feelings that accompany her on the months of solitude crossing 1700 miles of outback Australia
The photographer represented National Geographic, and the photos have that look the magazine readers expect. Interesting panoramas, the light playing on the spinifex, the wrinkled face of an Aboriginal tracker, the otherworldly red dirt, the camels silhouetted against the skyline.
Robyn represented only herself and undertook the trek for reasons even she did not understand. Seeing her develop and expand her thinking during the days and weeks and months on the track makes this a fascinating book.
Incredibly beautiful.......2003-07-10
This book breaks all the boundaries - combining Photography, digital media and narrative to capture the wild spirit in us all. Makes me want to buy and camel and set off!
Alice to Ocean.......2000-03-07
I bought this book while on a visit to Australia in 1990 and read it on the flight home! I was completely entranced by this woman's tenacity and determination to complete her often difficult but life expanding trek ALL ALONE! I had lost this book in a fire in 1993 and felt like I had lost a friend - I am soooo happy to see it is back in print! The incredible photos that accompany the journey are worth every penny!

Book Description
The environmental crisis is global in scope, yet contemporary environmental ethics is centered predominantly in Western philosophy and religion. Earth's Insights widens the scope of environmental ethics to include the ecological teachings embedded in non-Western worldviews. J. Baird Callicott ranges broadly, exploring the sacred texts of Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism, as well as the oral traditions of Polynesia, North and South America, and Australia. He also documents the attempts of various peoples to put their environmental ethics into practice. Finally, he wrestles with a question of vital importance to all people sharing the fate of this small planet: How can the world's many and diverse environmental philosophies be brought together in a complementary and consistent whole?
Customer Reviews:
It's About Ethics and What We Do to the Land.......2001-03-14
I'm thrilled to find this paperback. Calicott tries to answer the ethical questions which have been ignored by all converts to the New Individualism.. The author is a philosopher and an excellent academic writer. It took me a while to get used to him. Since 1994 this work has been a guide for writers who deal with the ethics of land use. In the U.S. we perceive the land as a commodity. Calicott surveys the ecological ethics of many cultures, now overwhelmed by Euroculture. He starts in the Mediterranean Basin with the historical roots of our environmental attitudes and values. Then he covers the rest of the earth including those of the original settlers of the Western Hemisphere. But he also details "A Postmodern Evolutionary Ecological Environmental Ethic"and contrasts it with our traditional environmental actions. He admires the work of Hindu environmentalists as well as Buddists in Sri Lanka and Thailand. Where else can we learn about this?
