Using a single hand grenade, he and his all-star patrol captured an entire German garrison of 800 people, earning him the Distinguished Service Cross and the title - "The Fool Lieutenant". 5 out of 5 stars Amazing heroism, a personal viewpoint.......2006-08-02

Personal narratives of World War 2 are pretty common, but this one was more personal to me since I knew the guy. Bob Edlin ran Edlin's Auction House here in Corpus Christi. A small kindly old man who probably didn't weigh 120 pounds soaking wet, you would never dream he captured 800 Germans single handedly. I never knew anything about him until I looked at the certificates on one wall of the auction house. A purple heart on June 6 1944! He was at D-day? I always wanted to ask him his story, but didn't want to pry. He didn't brag about his exploits, didn't even mention them. I wish I would've talked to him some more, he passed away a few years ago. But at any rate he, with the help of Marcia Moen and Margo Heinen, put his story down in paper, and it makes for fine reading. There were millions of Bob Edlins in the war, and we can never thank them enough. Pass the history on to the future generations, we owe it to them.

5 out of 5 stars A must be read book.......2006-03-15

The Fool Lieutenant is one of several WWII 1st person accounts of veteran's memories of combat in Europe and the Italian campaigns. These stories need to be told and read to let younger generations know what their fathers did to make the world safer for them today. My father never talked about the war to me except in generalities I know most were the same way around their children.

5 out of 5 stars Rangers Lead the Way.......2004-08-26

I happened on to this book by chance and am glad I did. I served with the 2nd Ranger Bn in the 80's and consider myself pretty good on Ranger History but, I had never heard of "The Fool Lieutenant". Bob Edlin is truely an American hero and anyone who is interested in WWII or the Rangers should definitely read this story. Mr. Edlin captures the essence of the dedication, the selflessness and the comaraderie that is embodied in the American Ranger both past and present.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-04-28

Excellent personal account of an elite Ranger. Edlin has been credited for almost single-handedly capturing 800 german soldiers and is a decorated soldier. This book shows the heart in soul of the volunteer Rangers. A real page turner.

5 out of 5 stars The Real McCoy.......2003-01-06

I met Mr. Edlin through my parents, who are retired in Corpus Christi.Mr. Edlin still shows up at his Auction House every day in the morning. This man's story is a fascinating glimpse into D-Day,WWII and the Depression generation.Besides capturing the Belgian Fort at Brest, surviving D-Day,declining the MOH, and chasing down a burglar with a car,Mr. Edlin has MUCH more to say that is NOT in this book! This is a MUST read! And if you're ever in Corpus Christi,Texas, stop by and say hello to "The Fool Lieutenant!

Book Description

Published in Britain to great acclaim -- a startling, gut-wrenching memoir of war, personal dissolution, and rebirth -- based on the author's experiences in Bosnia.

When tragedy strikes Bill Carter's life he finds himself drawn to an unlikely place -- Bosnia, in the midst of its civil war. Searching for meaning in the heart of darkness, he manages to find lodging in an abandoned tower block and sets out getting supplies to the starved, besieged citizens of Sarajevo. It is there that Carter emerges from his stupor. Inspired by a community of people working to bring relief to the city, he daringly enlists the help of music group U2 and its lead singer, Bono, who set up satellite links on the band's Zooropa tour that allowed ordinary citizens of Sarajevo to speak unedited and live on 90-foot television screens to thousands of concertgoers worldwide.

Just as Michael Herr's Vietnam memoir Dispatches captured the horror of war for the '60s generation, Bill Carter's Fools Rush In will be the seminal book for this generation on the visceral and transformative impact of war in our time.

A layered, character-driven memoir that reads like a novel. For everyone who wants to understand a little more about war -- and right now, shouldn't that be all of us?

5 out of 5 stars War and Love - a really powerful story.......2006-06-14

I loved this book. It was raw and powerful and really moved me. This book touches on a couple of key themes - war and love. I found it a really powerful commentary on the politics of war, without being a political polemic. Equally, anyone who has experienced the death of someone young and close to them will find a kindred spirit which may make the experience less lonely. The only time Carter lost me was when he describes his experiences with U2. He comes across as bit of a victim, a bit too self pitying. This is a problem only because it is at odds with the rest of the book which has such a tone of endurance and spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Truely a story of love and war.......2005-08-27

This emotionaly moving story encompasses all facets of human emotion and should truely be read by everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Intimate and Horrifying.......2005-06-29

FOOLS RUSH IN by Bill Carter is a memoir of the siege of Sarajevo by an American who voluntarily went there to help the Bosnians victimized by the Serbian aggressors.

Carter had recently lost a girlfriend suddenly in a car accident, and he was looking for something to do to get away from his grief. He went to the Balkans, where he had a friend working for an aid organization in Split, Croatia. He couldn't get an "official" job in Bosnia, during the war, so he joined The Serious Road Trip, a group of internationals, who drove brightly painted trucks and cars and delivered food aid to beseiged people while juggling and clowning for the kids. Carter's main friend in the narrative is Graeme, who utters some funny Brit black humor in the course of the surreal events of the memoir. ("Easy there, Spam," will forever be part of my ideolect.)

Carter essentially moves to Sarajevo, and stays in an office tower near the front lines, the Unis Towers. He tells of the daily hardships of living with no sure supply of water, food, gas, electric along with having to move through the city ever-aware of snipers. The Serious Road Trip delivered food to different groups around the city, mostly based on interpersonal relationships the members of TSRT developed. For example, Carter meets two sisters who lead him on a run across Sniper Alley (they accused him of being a "war tourist") to their apartment, which they couldn't leave once the siege began until their father dug a tunnel out of the building, as the main exit faced the Serb-occupied hills. In the family's apartment, Carter feels guilt over enjoying the hospitality they offer him. He can see from their faces and bodyies that they are slowly starving, but they are all amazed when they find a bullet in the flour he was carrying in the box of groceries he was taking to them as he ran across Sniper Alley. He watches a video with the family of a birthday party, and in the video, as they celebrate, a bullet comes through the window and lodges in the wall. After the instant of the shot, the family recovers and continues the celebration. After showing the video, the mother tells Carter, "Our first bullet."

It is unreal and inhumane moments like this that are best illustrated in Carter's narrative. Much of the last half of the book deals with Carter's idea to get U2 to publicize the problems in Sarajevo because of the siege. (The UN brought in food for those trapped in the city, but the Serbs wouldn't allow it to be delivered unless they got 40 percent of it themselves. The UN troops also kept Sarajevans in the city, not allowing them to connect with the free Bosnian territory just beyond the UN controlled airport.) The U2 aspect was interesting, and illustrated how the world came to be outraged about what was happening to Bosnians, but it was less interesting than the small moments so well depicted by Carter's intimacy with the lives of Sarajevans but colored by his "foreigner's" view, as an American. His stranger's view of the situation allows him to voice his moral outrage, but his intimate experience with the city's horrors, and his own hardships because of it, allow him that outrage, legitimize it.

The thing I didn't like about the book is an aspect of Carter's personality that I term (borrowing from organizational communication) "low elimination breakpoint." Carter seems to be better than everything, or at least everything around him has intolerable flaws. Aid organizations are too bureaucratic, so he won't work with them. Even though he works in film and makes a documentary of the hardships in Sarajevo during the siege, working in film is also not good enough for him. Etc. I found some of the writing overwrought (he was the most in love of any person ever in love, for example). He seems to morally eschew attention for his work in Bosnia, but then is offended when he doesn't get what he thinks is his fair share.

One of the most moving and upsetting moments in the narrative is when TSRT is trying to get out of Bosnia to collect supplies and stays with a Muslim family in a town after the Croats have turned on their Muslim allies against the Serbs. Carter and his colleagues know the town they're in is about to be ethnically cleansed, and the family they're staying with will be victims of that cleansing. There is a teen-age boy in the family who tells them it isn't their war, and Carter thinks, whose war is it?" A boy's war? People who didn't cause it, but are about to be killed en masse because of their Turkish sounding names? TSRT can leave the town, but the people with whom they've stayed cannot. Again, it's the intimacy and humanity of the encounter that make the impression. Carter later hears that the people of the town who could flee tied handicapped and sick people to their beds and fled the genocidal murderers by running into the woods. That's all he knows of the family who sheltered him...

I bought this book at an English-language bookstore in Sarajevo, so it was richer to read about such places as Sniper Alley, the Holiday Inn, the Old Town, the tunnel the Bosnian forces used to get supplies and soldiers into and out of Sarajevo after having seen them myself. It's a good book and serves as an effective companion to the historical and political reportage that exists on the war. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, heartfelt story!.......2005-06-27

This is definitely one of the best books I have read this year. Once I started it I could not put it down. Bill Carter gives an excellent account of his personal journey that takes him into war-torn B-H, and tells a well-rounded story that obviously comes from the heart. No political grandstanding-- you can identify with the point of view of this normal, adventurous guy who has the courage (and initial naivety) to inject himself into a surreal world where people are trying to continue living the best they can in the midst of destruction and death. Fascinating account of his interaction with U2, and the resulting broadcasts on the world's stage of real human beings trapped inside the insanity of war. And mixed in is his own struggle with personal loss that leaves him empty but leads him into a situation that ultimately puts everything in perspective. He magnificently weaves all these elements together for an overall balanced, engaging narrative. After reading, I also watched Carter's Miss Sarajevo documentary which superbly complements the book.

Book Description

Dark Horse Comics presents the latest volume of Star Wars: A Long Time Ago... featuring classic Star Wars stories not seen in over twenty years! Originally printed by Marvel Comics, these stories have been meticulously re-colored and are sure to please both new and old Star Wars fans. Fool's Bounty collects issues 68 to 81 of the original Marvel run, along with Star Wars Annual #3. Most of these stories take place after The Empire Strikes Back, as Han Solo's friends continue to search for their lost scoundrel, and this volume ends with Marvel's first story set in the Return of the Jedi era -- "Jawas of Doom." Lando Calrissian is hilariously disguised in "The Big Con," a captured Princess Leia must escape torment in "Death In The City Of Bone," and C-3PO gets his mechanical heart broken in "Ellie." Also highlighted are several rare Star Wars pinups, and an introduction by James Kochalka!

4 out of 5 stars Great, But Where's "ROTJ"?.......2006-05-21

Why didn't this volume include the adaptation of "Return Of The Jedi"? I thought this 7-voulume set collected the ENTIRE Marvel run! I know "Jedi" was released as a separate four-issue series, but I would have like to have seen what it looked like before Dark Horse re-colored it.

Other than that, volume 5 is great, and has characters like Fenn Shysa, Tobbi Dala, and Zeltrons who have survived to the modern day.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of the Marvel stories. FUN FUN FUN!.......2003-04-22

To me, this book is like a time machine. When I read it, I'm 12 years old again and eagerly awaiting the theatrical release of Return of the Jedi. What happened to Han Solo? Who is this mysterious bounty hunter named Boba Fett? How will Luke get ready for his inevitable showdown with Darth Vader?

None of these questions are directly answered by this series, but they're alluded to as Leia, Lando, and Luke go on all-new adventures. Like the stupendous volume 4, the art is excellent -- Tom Palmer and Walt Simonson aren't afraid to put our heroes in different clothes, and writer David Michelinie is capable of fleshing these archetypes out into real characters.

Despite the technical differences (the coloring process used in the 80s is crude compared to today's comics), these remain my favorites for Star Wars "graphic novels." If you're into Star Wars and have an open mind, don't miss this run of wonderful stories.

      Book Description

Set at the time of the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78, "The Fool" provides invaluable glimpses into social conditions in western Armenia at the time. It portrays the development of an Armenian civil rights movement in Ottoman Turkey.

"The Fool" is an account of a heroic struggle to defend ordinary people from the depredations and avarice of Ottoman authorities, neighboring peoples, and a corrupt Armenian establishment. It is the story of a revolutionary struggle to establish a just and civil society in Armenia.

This historical novel has served as an "I have a dream" speech for generations of Armenians.

In the course of a romantic and hopeful novel, Raffi depicts in detail the way of life of Armenian peasants, their psychology, and the conditions under which they survived. He also portrays the central ideas that fuelled Armenian radical intellectuals of the day.

"The Fool" is arguably the single most important work of literature dealing with the Armenian Question in Ottoman Turkey. Raffi depicts many of the actual figures and settings involved in the events of the time. The classical clarity and drama of its dialogue, the Armenian aphorisms that play such an important role throughout the story, the philosophical depth and moral passion embodied in it all make this novel a remarkable encounter with one of the greatest creative minds in modern Armenian history.

Donald Abcarian's new translation includes extensive notes and a glossary.

Sarah Zettel's first novel (Reclamation) showed her to be an up-and-coming author with promise. She delivers on that promise with Fool's War, a book that is never what it seems. The main character--Dobbs--is a modern Fool, someone who serves as both entertainer and psychoanalyst for the ships that ply the stars. When the ship on which Dobbs is serving accidentally delivers a rogue artificial intelligence to an unsuspecting planet, a secret that has held the galaxy together will threaten to tear it apart. This is a grand, fast-moving story with delightful characters and insightful social commentary. And darn fun to read.

A really interesting, if not amazing book. A Fool is basically a 'human relationship consultant' you could call it. Her job is to keep crews amused, etertained, and functioning smoothly.

This particular Fool has a job on a ship. However, she comes across a plot to foment violence between man and machine, and she must put her skills to work to stop this.

A secret ability comes in very handy when trying to accomplish this end.

5 out of 5 stars All good stories have a twist in the end.......2007-07-05

This was my first and is still my favorite Sara Zettel story. A wonderfully flawed character that gets close to your heart right up till the end, then leaves you confused and wondering if you understand what it is to be human at all. The humor reminded me of Heinlein at times. The drama reminded me of Iain M. Banks. The story was totally unique to my reading. Maybe similar to other stories, but the totality of the book was totally unique to me, and I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Very unusual and well-written novel.......2006-09-03

"Fool's War" was Sarah Zettel's second published novel and is one of the best and most original books that a sci-fi author of either sex has written in the last decade.

One of the principal characters in the book is a muslim woman. If you have little or no personal experience of professional muslims and think of them in terms of stereotypes, you may have some difficulty with this book. And if you also have a stereotypical idea of how women write - this point goes for males and females alike - and start projecting your own gender preconceptions onto this book, you may get funny ideas about it.

Judging Sarah Zettel as a writer and not as a woman writer, and speaking as someone with a reasonable number of male and female Muslim friends and colleagues, most of whom are devout but not fundamentalists, I found the book excellent and the Muslim characters perfectly plausible.

The book is set five hundred years in the future, at a time when humans have spread to many stars. One of the greatest dangers to spaceships, habitats and terraformed colonies is that sentient and independent intelligences can develop in their computer systems.

Starship captain Katmer Al Shei is trying to recruit new crew members for her ship the "Pasadena" and signs on Evelyn Dobbs as the ship's professional fool. The cover role for the Fool's Guild members on starships is that their jokes help starship crew stay sane in space.

Although they do perform this role, the members of the Fool's guild are much stranger and more important than they appear and have a vital secret purpose. Soon after Evelyn Dobbs signs on to the Pasadena she has to try to avert a war which could destroy worlds - and meanwhile everyone on the ship is in danger.

This novel is something else - part cyberpunk, part space opera, but mostly sui generis. I strongly recommend it, expecialy to anyone who enjoyed Sarah Zettel's other novels such as "Reclamation" and "The Quiet Invasion."

      4 out of 5 stars A fine & twisty feminista space-opera........2004-01-22

      _____________________________________________
This one sat on my 'to-read' shelf for a long time, after I bounced off her first, Reclamation, which has an excruciatingly slow start. Fool's War was a New York Times Notable Book of 1997 (and Reclamation won a Locus Award for Best First Novel...)

The setup is uncomfortably topical -- the story-now is 500 years after violent religious wars, started by Islamic extremists, almost wrecked Earth. The subsequent diaspora to the colony worlds simply spread out the same old hatreds. Now the ugly chickens are flapping home to roost....

I can't say very much about Fool's War's plot without spoiling things for you, but Zettel spins an impressively twisty tale. She constantly plays with the reader's expectations, and she (mostly) plays fair -- though her storytelling craft still has some rough spots in this sophomore effort. A cover blurb compares her to Heinlein and Asimov, but there's more than a touch of Van Vogt's signature rapidfire scene-changes here.

Fool's War is somethng of a grrrl powr-fantasy -- and I do like a well-done power-fantasy, especially one with a light touch. Here's Pilot Yerusha, in a moment of reflection within the storm of denouement: "I'm saving the human race so I can go on a date..." If you like to see femmes kicking butt that *needs* kicking, you'll like Fool's War.

Zettel's authorial hand does get a bit heavy with her villains, and in pointing characters where they need to go for the next plot-twist. But overall it's good, clean fun, and I'll have to do some Zettel catchup reading soon.

review copyright 2001 by Peter D. Tillman

4 out of 5 stars Unusual twists and turns.......2003-08-27

Fool's War is one of the more unusual science fiction books I've read recently. I recommend reading various reviews on Amazon rather than rely on the blurb on the book's back cover since it misleads the reader -- specifically, the book is more about intrigue, shifting alliances, socio-economic warfare, and prejudice rather than merely a hard-core examination of artificial intelligences and viruses.

In fact, Zettel seems driven to put a human face on bigotry and prejudice and is using science fiction imagery to make her case. She describes many types of bigotry:

Religious -- Several of the main characters are Muslim and their faith is an integral part of who they are. Not everyone they meet, however, can separate the individual from terrorist acts that occurred in the past.

Spiritual / philosophical -- A community has arisen that denies that humankind will ever be truly free when trapped on a single planet. Humankind must create its own environments and be master of its own fate rather than rely on the capricious nature of Nature. These individuals are ridiculed and, in essence, reviled for their beliefs and are considered second class citizens. Zettel even makes one of her enlightened characters intolerant of members of this cultural "diversity".

Life-form -- Human vs. artificial intelligence. What does it mean to be human, or alive? Are humans so inherently xenophobic that they cannot accept the possibility of other types of life? Are artificial intelligences so jaundiced that they must instill fear rather than convince?

All in all, this is a very strong book. Strong characterization, strong plot, enough twists and turns to make things interesting.

      5 out of 5 stars A really good story!.......2005-11-20

I loved this book! It was humorous, intelligent, compassionate and well thought out, not to mention charming. It was a nice fairytale with some clever twists, and though some elements are a little predictable, there are plenty that are not. The characters are well-rounded and likeable, and the medieval setting is historically accurate enough to be more than believable. I hope this writer has written more books like this...if he has then I look forward to reading them!

If you like Gail Carson Levine's books, or Vivian Vande Velde's, then you'll probably quite enjoy this. Some people have compared this to Lloyd Alexander's work, but frankly I don't see the connection myself...his stuff is more like straight out fantasy, whereas this book has a real fairytale feel, with touches of both the mystical and the divine. Don't let the 'fairytale' tag put off the boys who might read it, though...I would heartily recommend this to both male and female readers.

      5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......1999-05-28

A truly romantic story of a beautiful merchant's daughter who does not want to marry the king. A boy/man is hired to persuade her to marry the king, but things get in the way....lovely!

      5 out of 5 stars The Fool's War.......1998-12-28

A cute little hilarious book, with characters I fell deeply in love with. Even though this book was simple and easy, the love tension and emotions were hard to control. Not only was the story great of (romance/fantasy) but the cover, graphics, and layout of the book was eye catching and a beauty to see. The book jacket was even nice enough to be consider framed and hung on a wall. You have to get your hands on a copy of this book, or else you'll never be able to get one again.

          Book Description

This title reviews Israel's policies in the Occupied Territories from the beginning of the occupation in 1967 and attempts to look ahead and analyse the possible effects of these on the peace process. The book covers: "Background" - which examines the elements that have played an important role in the formulation of Israel's policy in the Territories as well as the "modus operandi" of the military and the government. A brief historical and chronological description of the main developments during the first 20 years, ending with the outbreak of the first Palestinian popular uprising (the Intifida) in 1987. An outline of the five major issues: Israeli plans and propositions for the preferred permanent political settlement between Israel and its Arab neighbours; various aspects of Israel's defence policy in the Territories; the political aspects of conducting municipal elections on the West Bank; a detailed description of the various atempts to establish settlement policies, both under the labour administration and following the Likud takeover. A summary of both the lessons to be learnt from the Intifida and the ramifications of this violent political and psychological confrontation.
