Slow Burn review.......2007-08-06
Just read this book and thought that his basic idea/theory was very interesting and revolutionary. The thought that you really can't improve your heart or lungs only your muscles is totally new to me and most interesting. I'm going to put his ideas to work.
Looks Like The Best Program For Low Carbers.......2007-07-07
I actually bought this book because I had set out to buy "The Cardio-Free Diet", by Jim Karas. I found out about Slow Burn and bought it, too, as well as the 2 Protein Power books.
I have been doing a cardio workout on a stationery bike for about 5 years. I have been spending over three hours a week, and am no longer happy with the results. It seemed no longer to be doing anything. Reading this book told me why.
The Karas approach and the Slow Burn approach are very similar. However, the diet part of Mr. Karas program is not workable for me. I have been a low carber for 6 years and have lost 86 pounds. Mr. Karas' diet approach is low-fat/low-calorie/low-protein/sort of low-carb. See a pattern there? I could never follow that program without ruining my diet efforts. Slow Burn was written by Fred Hahn, the fitness expert, and the Drs. Eades, experts on the low carbohydrate diet. For anyone who is or wants to be low carb, this is the one to buy.
Also, I haven't actually started my Slow Burn workouts yet. It took me a couple of months to read all my books. For the Slow Burn program there is not much one has to buy, but I do still need a couple of things so I haven't started yet. Reading the other comments about people's results in just a month or two has recharged me! I'm looking forward to jumping in.
awsome.......2007-06-02
where all other fitness books fall short. this one doesnt....the authors hit a home run with this..it gets to the point, explanes why, and pictures show you how. i liked the idea you can actually do this at home for little or no money..
Very Enjoyable.......2007-05-29
Very interesting book. After reading it, I felt convinced of the author's ideas, and was excited to start using their program. Wish the book had a little more heft, detail, and described more evidence that supported their case that their form of exercise was the best. Subtract the pages on how to do various exercises, that I found redundant as someone who has lifted weights frequently in the past, and you have a pretty short book. I felt it was worth it though to find out about their method. The method, by the way, was one I had heard about years and years ago. A bodybuilder named Mike Mentzer popularized what he called the "Heavy Duty" training system, which is about the same as the "Slow Burn" system. The "Super Slow" system is the same as well, really. What I wanted out of the book was evidence to convince me that this was the best method, and a little guidance, and I felt that I got that from the book, so I was happy.
SLOW GOING.......2007-04-16
The first 85 pages of this book try and sell the reader on weight training, and discourage people from running.
Another book uses the supper slow method to get amazing results the book: Bigger Muscles in 42 Days by Ellington Darden. In this book he uses the supper slow method to help the man pictured on the cover build 34 pounds of muscle in 42 days. The supper slow method woks but I am not sure that you can get everything out of the gym in just 30 min per week. When I did the Darden program 15-20 min. 6 says per week is all I could do at the gym. The Darden program had me working 4x more than this program. You can skip this book if you know that each exercise is doe for ten seconds up, and ten seconds down. Working your muscles until failure.

Fitness trainer Jorge Cruise has helped 3 million cyberspace clients lose weight, and now he's headed for your bookshelf with the same goal in mind. In just eight minutes a day, says Cruise, you can drop two pounds of fat per week, change your shape, and gain muscle and energy. His secret formula: an inspirational "wake-up talk," followed by strength training two muscle groups per day, eating according to his "eating card" program, and keeping a journal. For exercise, Cruise presents a varied, 28-day program of illustrated exercises using dumbbells. Why the emphasis on strength training? While aerobics burns calories while you're exercising, adding muscle revs up fat burning at rest by increasing your metabolic rate. Every pound of muscle you gain burns an extra 50 calories per day. You'll look better and feel younger and more energetic, resulting in more activity, burning more calories, he says. Cruise's eating plan emphasizes "good" (omega) fats, complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein (low in saturated fat), and vegetables, with dairy, fruits, and "treats and cravings" in moderation. His "Eating Card System" gives you an allotment of portions from each of the food groups. If you're the kind who likes the regimentation of following a specific program every day, Cruise will get you moving, eating better, and losing weight. --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
It Works!.......2007-08-07
I purchased the book over 2 years ago and it collected dust on my bookshelf. Just a little over 3 weeks ago I decided to use the program. I have to say that IT WORKS! My clothes are much looser and I've lost 5lbs. give or take. The eating portion I'm tweaking but if I were to follow it precisely I'm sure I would've lost more. The book is worth the price and Jorge is very encouraging with the daily talks noted in the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with losing weight!
very efficient.......2007-07-26
I have contemplated this book for about 2years, I hesitated to spend 12 dollars on yet another excercise plan that probably wouldn't work. I found the book on the bargain rack 2 1/2 weeks ago so I got it. I have not followed his eating plan, I was going to ease into that. Instead, I have cut back on carbs and tried to add more lean protein. I also allow myself one day per week to eat those things I was craving. This helps me stay on track the rest of the week. The excercise are fairly easy, I like the abilty to use different weights and the variety of muscle groups worked is great. By the end of the first week my husband said he thought I had lost weight, I said nah, it's only been a week. At the end of week 2 I had to agree that I lost at least 2 pounds. My goal is to lose 10 lbs. This is the first time that I have tried to loose weight and actually succeeded!
Very motivating!.......2007-07-13
I found this book on sale at a bookstore for $2.50. I had seen it before in my book club and it caught my interest. I bought the book...and read the entire book that evening! I did not realize how strength training can reshape your body. I was convinced! So, I took the book to work with me the next day and showed it to my best friend. I went back to the bookstore that night (a 60 minute drive) to buy the last copy for my friend so we could do this together. We made copies of the food cards and stapled them together (very similar to WW points trackers) and vowed to wake up 15 minutes earlier to exercise. We shared our love/hate relationship with Jorge daily. Several weeks after following the program, my mom told me that she could tell a difference in my arms--that they were more defined. My friend and I followed the program for several weeks--11 or 12. We both lost weight, but not the 2 pounds a week. Since Jorge, we have both aquired different jobs. It's funny though--when we talk, we still bring up Jorge. Our books have been leant to friends and although we do not daily follow his program anymore, we both think this is a very valuable book. The exercises are the best part. I now follow the WW plan for diet, but his exercises are really great! Super book! (I have 3 of Jorge's 8 Minutes books and believe this to be the best).
Great Exercise--I'll Pass on the Diet.......2007-06-28
I love the exercise plans in Jorge Cruise's books, but I really dislike the somewhat dishonest way the dieting aspect is presented: he says aerobics and dieting are out and adding lean muscle is in. Granted. I agree whole heartedly. But, he then proceeds to recommend a VERY low calorie diet. And, he goes on to say that your newly added muscle will be burning 2 lbs. per week. Yes, I agree: add that muscle back and you will rev up your metabolism and burn off the fat. That is why I bought his book in the first place. But, then why does he put us on a diet (the very thing he said doesn't work??). The diet alone is restrictive enough to cause the 2 lb. a week of weight loss, folks, without doing any exercise at all.
Having bashed the diet plan, I really do like the concept of adding simple strength training exercise on a almost daily basis, and certainly at least three times a week. I am not a big fan of cardio and the way it can't really reshape your body, but I do add 3 days of 20 minutes for heart health.
Bottom line: if you're looking for a way to add some simple, and effective exercise to your life, by all means I recommend Jorge Cruise's books. The theory is good. It is the very restrictive diet that I have a problem with especially in view of his blatant statement that diets don't work and diets are out. It seems that you are working at cross purposes here: trying to rev up the metabolism with added muscle while semi-starving the body enough to get it to go into starvation mode and slow down the whole process. I think the far better way to eat is to calculate the calories necessary to maintain your goal weight and start eating at that amount. For me, that would be around 1500 calories, based on doing almost no exercise. Whatever your goal weight, the calories to maintain it will be a reduction under what you are currently eating and will lead to weight loss, but will not be so restrictive as to cause your body to go into starvation mode. Lean Bodies has a good diet plan that has worked for me in the past. That plan starts women at 1500 calories a day and men at about 1800. It is a low fat diet recommending lean protein, some carbs and lots of veggies at each meal. For me, that plan, coupled with Cruise's exercise are a really sane approach to the diet/exercise dilemma.
i am pleased with this book.......2007-04-23
this book gives you a good plan to change your life and eat healthier and exercise daily. the exercises and eating plan are both pretty easy to follow and as long as you follow it, you do lose weight. i am pleased that i purchased this book and would recommend it to others.

Book Description
In the year 2007 the world is not what it was...
Powerful earthquakes and hurricanes have left most of South America in ruins--and solar rays pouring down through holes in the depleted ozone layer can burn human flesh to a crisp in minutes. An impending global eco-catastrophe has brought a crack scientific team to a desolate island in the Galápaos--along with a ragtag squad of U.S. Navy SEALs entrusted with their protection--to position critical seismic equipment before the next wave of earthquakes hits. But there is something waiting for them all in the jungles of Sangre de Dios. A scientific phenomenon the likes of which has never been seen has evolved in the devastating heat of a killing sun. And with the world's future hanging in the balance, a desperate search for answers has suddenly turned into a terrifying war for survival--transforming scientists and soldiers alike into something they never dreamed possible: prey.
Download Description
The scientific charge of The Hot Zone and the epic thrill of Jurassic Park converge in Minutes to Burn-an exhilarating new eco-thriller about a team of scientists and Navy SEALs stranded on an island in the Galápagos and fighting to survive an evolutionary catastrophe. The year is 2007. Through widening holes of ozone depletion, the tropical sun burns human skin to a crisp. Powerful earthquakes and monstrous hurricanes wrack South America, exploding Ecuador's already anarchic instability. Cameron Kates, a hard-hitting Navy SEAL hiding the secret of her early pregnancy, gets pulled begrudgingly into a mission with her husband, Justin. Along with a ragtag squad of soldiers, ordered on the babysitting mission against their will, she must escort Dr. Rex Williams, a renowned ecotectonicist, to the chaotic continent. Rex is forced to brave the extreme and unprecedented dangers of such an expedition for one reason alone-so he can position critical seismic equipment on Sangre de Dios, a desolate and depopulated island in Galápagos. Others have recently vanished from the island without a trace. Cameron's platoonmates-a crackpot demolition expert, a chief who wears her brawn over her considerable intelligence, an unhinged lieutenant recovering from a personal tragedy-are an erratic but expert crew. Yet ultimately it is the newcomer, William Savage, a brooding Vietnam vet with raging warrior instincts, from whom Cameron must learn when the straightforward mission escalates into a battle for survival. In the forest of the island awaits a scientific phenomenon the likes of which man has never witnessed. As the stunned scientists and soldiers furiously unravel the threads of the ecological mystery they've encountered, they discover that they're trapped within a lethal, predatory battle where only the fittest survive. And the fate of the world is hanging in the balance.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly suspenseful with a decent science base.......2006-03-06
It is the year 2007 (book written in 2001), and much of Latin America is involved in war as well as environmenal disaster including earthquakes and disasterous levels of UV rays. But despite the danger, scientist Rex Williams sees the need to travel to Sangre de Dios, an island in the Galapagos that is mostly deserted. Rex wants to set up instruments that will detect earthquakes and sent that information back to the mainland in an effort to warn others of the seismic activity. He successfully petitions the government to send him in with the aid of a half-platoon of Navy SEALS. But this is no ordinary platoon - each comes with his or her own personal baggage and is a ragtag bunch.
Cameron Kates and her husband Justin have recently decided to be active in the Navy reserves instead of full time soldiers. They are called to be a part of this island bound team, but learn of their mission at the same time that the couple finds out that they are pregnant - much against Cameron's better judgment. They must try to put their personal feelings aside and fulfill their roles as soldiers first. William Savage is a Vietnam Vet who is pulled from the confines of a jail cell to participate in this mission. The other members of the platoon are equally distracted by events in their personal lives that will affect their judgment and sensibility.
All of these characters are ill prepared for what awaits them on the tropical island. Rumors had spread among the island residents that the island was haunted and more than one person claimed to have seen a "tree monster." What the expedition doesn't know is that an undiscovered virus has found it's way to the island and has mutated through it's contacts with the natural wildlife to present the group with a deadly threat that none will be prepared for. The group must contend with this deadly evil as well as balance the need to preserve the island and it's wildlife as much as possible in order to prevent the destruction of more of the world's natural environment.
Minutes to Burn is a decent thriller and a fairly quick read. Some of the action gets bogged down in the science. But that is only because the science is not explained as well as it probably could be. If the reader is comfortable skimming some of the explanation of the virus and it's mutations, then the pages turn a lot faster. Another downside is the pages spent on the personal life of Dr. Everett who is the specialist for the military stationed at Fort Detrick in Maryland who examines the samples set back to the States and aids in the explanation of how deadly the virus is and how the soldiers should handle the situation. Certainly they needed a person stateside to work the lab, but we learn just enough about her personal life and family to wonder where the author is going with it, but not enough for it to strengthen the story.
Overall, however, the book is fairly good action. I liked The Tower, Hurwitz's first novel, much better, and so I will read another, but if the pace doesn't pick up a bit during the next one I might give up - not because they are bad, but because they aren't great.
Think Alien crossed with Predator.......2005-06-01
If you purchase this book consider if you will the original movie Alien with a few premises from the movie Predator included.
We have a strong protagonist lead in Cameron who is married to Justin. (All while reading the book I pictured Cameron Diaz and Justin Timerlake but they couldn't make the book happen.)
You can read from the content the other reviews. It was an enjoyable book, but I kept waiting for the book to get to the conclusion and find out who made it out alive.
The book could easily be made into a movie.
Very original with a vicious monster.......2005-03-14
The world is on brink of ecological catastrophe with the serious depletion of the ozone layer, causing natural disasters to take place. The worst situation appears in the South American countries. US sends a team ff scientists, protected by a Navy Seal Team to place tectonic monitors on the Galapagos Islands - the center of all the natural disaster activity. Once there, the Seals and the scientists face an enemy, which will test their intelligent and the will to survive. A giant praying Mantis, pure predator with the intention of eliminating each one of the team members in order to safely lay her eggs for the future monsters. Original, scary, with superb characters and action, this is Gregg Hurwitz's best novel and what a movie it would make. Highly recommended.
Cliches galore.......2005-01-04
Thank goodness I got this book for $1 at a library sale. I expected more based upon the reviews, plus I enjoy a good thriller as much as anyone. However...the characters are not very sympathetic, and the action chugged along (saved by some pretty graphic descriptions). Found myself skipping pages to hurry it along. I kept waiting for something revelatory from Savage, the LT, or any of the other characters. Could Cameron be any more whiney? How many times will someone gasp or make a sound when they need to be absolutely silent? Like the worst grade-Z horror movie, you know when someone walks backwards something will pop out and go BOO! I wondered almost immediately when the author mentioned the implanted comm chip why they didn't emphasize getting off the island ASAP? Oh never mind. Frustrating book, as it held such good premise.
minutes to burn.......2002-12-30
The premise of this book was interesting, and some of the action was hot and heavy, but a lot of books by people who do not have a military background fall into some similar problems, and this one is no exception. The major problems are chain of command (the SEALS in this book don't seem to report to anyone in the Navy) and an understanding that the services are different. Hurwitz calls the SEALS soldiers throughout the book, but SEALS are sailors, not soldiers, and would not refer to themselves as soldiers. SEALS are the hot heroes of the moment, and that is fine, but if you are writing about a service, refer to them by their proper mode of address (I have read other writers who refer to Marines as soldiers, but as a former Marine, I can tell you it matters what they are called). Overall, the book was OK, and in places a page turner. I agree with others that some of the technical ecoscience jargon got to be a bit much. But Hurwitz did play fair and kill off characters I thought would pull through.

A good book to use to begin teaching time to young children!.......2000-10-02
I used this book with first graders last week in the Vestal School District in Upstate New York. I followed the Marilyn Burns activities suggested in the back of the book. The activities seem simple, but they are carefully designed. The lesson went very well and was easy to use. I was amazed that none of the children peeked when they closed their eyes for one minute so that they could feel how long a minute really is. We also stood on one leg for one minute, clapped our hands for one minute, and drew stars for one minute. We then counted the stars in different ways. We practiced the various ways of counting off a minute in time, and the children discussed with me what kinds of activities take more than a minute and which ones take less. I believe that every child in that classroom now has a fairly clear understanding of the length of a minute. The children liked the story and they related to Fred who is told, "just a minute." This is a great way to begin the study of time measurement.

Customer Reviews:
This book is so 90s.......2006-11-23
I bought this book for 99 cents at a Goodwill because I had remembered seeing it in the self-help section of bookstores back when it was published. I paid too much. I thought the concept looked intriguing but was sorely disappointed at the content. The book is a jumbled mess of mostly useless advice on different parts of your life and is chock full of quotes and references from numerous "experts" in mental and physical health. One ridiculous example is in the chapter dealing with the transition from work to home each day. It actually recommends that you try to limit your first comment to your family to 25 words or less. It gives reasons for this but come on, who's counting the words in the sentences they use and why 25? In addition to this, every other sentence in the book tells you to eat a low-fat this or a non-fat that. Oh, and don't forget to drink a gallon of ice water a day using rubber bands around your sports bottle to keep track of the quantity. Insane! You would think from all the testimonials on the book jacket that this was some sort of self-help bible that is the last reference you'll ever need on how to live your life. Please save your money. Even if it's 99 cents.
Measures up to all it says.......1999-07-07
This is one of the greatest resource books I have ever run across. It is amazing how much you can change your life, your body, your relationships in just 5 minute (or less) increments. Anyone who says they "don't have time" needs to read this book. It gives you time. It gives you permission to do the things you want to do and you can no longer say you don't have time. It tells you how and has all the back-up to support what it says. It is laid-out well, with easy to read chapters, plus extra "information boxes" on a variety of subjects. Pick this book up and turn to any page. You will find something that you were looking for. From food prep, to muscle exercises, to meditation, to love, its all in there. Just check out the rave reviews on the book and who wrote them if you don't believe me.
"The Power of 5" is very informative!.......1998-11-09
I originally purchased "The Power of 5" as a guide to stress relief and weight management. I got much more than I bargained for! It contains great little tips to improve just about every aspect of your life; none of which take more than a few minutes to implement. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends!
