Book Description

Here is a holistic approach to childbirth that examines this profound rite-of-passage, not as a medical event, but as an act of self-discovery. Exercises and activities such as journal writing, meditation, and painting will help mothers analyze their thoughts and face their fears during pregnancy. For use during birth, the book offers proven techniques for coping with labor pain without drugs, a discussion of the doctor or midwife’s role, and a look at the father’s responsibilities. Childbirth education should also include what do expect after the baby is born. Here are baby basics, such as how to bathe a newborn, how to get the little one to sleep, and tips for getting nursing off to a good start. Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is a process of continuous learning and adjustment; Birthing From Within provides the necessary support and education to make each phase of birthing a rewarding experience.

5 out of 5 stars Personalizing the birth experience.......2007-10-04

As a woman who's feeling cornered into a cesarean due to a stubborn breech baby, I am grateful that Birthing From Within approaches birth from all angles fairly. So many other resources out there seem to not acknowledge that a cesarean birth is still the miraculous birth of our children and that there are ways to personalize and take ownership of the experience, instead of feeling as if we have no control over what's happening to our bodies and our babies. I am taking a Birthing From Within class, as I was planning and preparing for that all natural childbirth experience--that just doesn't seem meant to be for us right now. At first, I felt a bit resentful and jealous that others in the class were all going to have their perfect birth experiences and I would be left out in the cold of the modern medical world. With the support of my doula and my teacher, I am feeling much more prepared to enter into this birth knowing that it is still ours. As an interesting note, Pam England birthed her first baby via cesarean--perhaps this is why she has more empathy and has the insight to offer women the ability to do some soul searching beforehand to come to terms with the process and how to heal, move on and have the birth experience that we want. I am very grateful for this resource.

4 out of 5 stars Facilitated self-exploration.......2007-09-28

Birthing from Within classes can be found all over, and can be a unique and powerful birth preparation. If you're planning to take a class, read this book first to get a sense of what the classes are supposed to entail, then interview the class instructor before signing up. Find out what you will be doing - be specific in your questions. I found that it's easy to call yourself a "Birthing from Within" instructor - it's no guarantee that the instructor will actually follow the principles and methods.

If you just plan to read the book, it's a nice guide to self-exploration. Some things might be tough to find the motivation to do without a teacher's encouragement and facilitation.

4 out of 5 stars New ways..........2007-08-14

to deal with birth. A new look at birth educations. I find it really helpful in classes. It is a great way to help people express themselves thru art. The author even has classes that can be attended.

5 out of 5 stars Touching and Inspiring.......2007-08-13

This is an excellent book for any woman going into pregnancy and birth. It will help you face your fears, accept what is to come, and make it the best possible experience you can have. The activities are especially helpful. I found this book to be vital in my preparation for a natural home VBAC. This book focuses on emotional preparation much more than physical facts, so don't be surprised that it pulls on your heartstrings and moves your emotions but doesn't give you the step by step labor instruction many other books have, since it's purpose is not to tell you how to labor, but to help you deal with the emotional rollercoaster labor can put you through.

Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Like a kind, very wise friend.......2007-07-29

This book is so good! I have searched and searched for a positive, helpful pregnancy/childbirth book and I finally found the one! I felt so good after reading this book, and read it in just two sittings because it is so interesting. The kindness that exudes from this book is amazing. After reading it I felt happy rather than more worried, even though it covers all the possible things you might encounter. It was like talking to a kind, very wise friend who has faith in you and your ability to cope. It was not preachy or pedantic or condescending- it inspires you rather than treats you like a "patient." It is full of very helpful things that you could only learn from experiencing birth yourself- it mentions many of the things that helped me in my first birth.

5 out of 5 stars Upgrades R Us.......2007-03-15

This is a wonderful Manual for anyone ready to upgrade from General to Extra. After upgrading to my General I felt guilty because I had passed the test, but pretty much had memorized the questions in the pool and could not put any of it to use. With this manual I am able to understand the theory and principles behind the questions and I will be a much better operator because of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Study Aid.......2007-02-16

With the large amount of information to be covered this book gives the information you need to pass the test and information that will be helpful. I passed the test on the first try after studying for only 1 and a half weeks (I would recommend studying longer though.)

5 out of 5 stars Time to Upgrade.......2007-01-26

I do most of my book purchasing and other things through Amazon. I've been a Ham Radio operator for ten years and had the urge to upgrade so I can operate on the HF bands. Amazon helped me out with an easy and quickly shipped Extra Class manual. I'm very thankful.

5 out of 5 stars It Helped me!.......2006-10-01

I haven't taken a upgrade exam since 1984 so I was a bit intimidated with the prospect of another FCC Exam. I researched the Web for information about where to find the most complete study guides for the Extra exam. I actually found the Question Pool on the Web, but I didn't just want to "Memorize the Test" as some have done in the past. I wanted the reasons for the answers and to refresh my now Older mind. The ARRL Study Guide was Very Thorough and yet to the point. The sections were broken up nicely so you can study each section and take a break. The question pool is in the back of the book and the answers reference the page in the study guide where its reasoning comes from. Perfect for me! It was an Excellent Review of some material and a Great Teacher of the New material that I had to learn in order to upgrade to the highest class in amateur radio. I Passed, Thanks to the ARRL Extra Class Study Guide.

5 out of 5 stars Simple: Read the book and pass the test.......2006-07-05

Now that there's no longer a 20 wpm code requirement for Extra, there's very little reason why almost any ham with some good basic math skills can't upgrade, given a book this good. All it takes is reading the book and flipping to the questions to check your understanding of the material as you finish each section. I found it took me about a week to do that and I passed with just one mistake (which kills me because if I'd taken more time, I should have gotten that one, too!)

I found the book quite logical, well-written and very methodical at explaining the material. I only spotted two minor errors: A garbled explanation of DeMorgan's Theorem as "logic polarity" on page 7-5, and the schematics of three oscillators on page 7-42, each with two connections to Vcc but none to ground.

The whole point of the book is to help you pass a multiple choice exam where all the questions are taken from a fixed pool and everyone knows what they are. But the book nicely avoids the trap of simply helping you memorize the answers and focuses instead on explaining the concepts so that when you read a test question, you're capable of doing whatever calculations are required and you know why one specific answer is the best. The only places where I felt the author might have offered a little more discussion were in presenting the formulas for second and third-order intercept points on page 4-22 (it took me several hours to figure out where these came from!) and in the section on phased vertical antennas (page 9-20), where you're given 15 charts to memorize but little explanation of how you might intuitively figure out what shape to expect as an alternative to the rote memorization.

I recommend this book. Go get your Extra!

4 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK.......2007-05-14

Interesting book, didnt read it, thought it might be shorter..not like a novel..too long to read..but there no problem with the seller or the shipment..everything is good overall.

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive and Somewhat Annoying.......2007-02-15

This book was originally published in 2003 (hardcover) under the title 8 Minutes in the Morning: For Real Shapes, Real Sizes. The average size of the American woman is a size 12 not a size 2. Jorge Cruise is a fitness coach and hailed as America's #1 weight-loss specialist. He says, -Cardiovascular exercise (aerobics) and dieting are out. And strength training is in.-

The focus of this book is to aid the reader in losing 2lbs a week without the use of dumbbells or equipment but by using your own body weight (wall, chair, table, or book) as resistance. By using Jorge's 28 day plan he claims it will help readers to learn to accept themselves and their body no matter what their size; replace emotional eating with a smarter method that allows them to experience the ultimate sense of support and comfort without food; consistently lose up to 2lbs a week; and transform their life and feel fulfilled, whole and happy. This is a tall order for 253 glossy pages.

To do this and before you start the physical 28 day plan you must complete all exercises in sections one and two. These aren't physical exercises but a series of quizzes, affirmations and journaling. The journaling, introspection and affirmations continue once you start the 28 day plan as well.

Each day before the exercises there is a visualization to work through. This is followed by two strength training exercises in the a.m. It's actually about twelve minutes and not eight as you have to do a two minute warm up before and two minute cool down after. This routine is done Monday - Saturday with Sunday off. The exercises work twelve core body parts: Chest & Back, Shoulders & Abdominals, Triceps & Biceps, Hamstrings & Quadriceps, Calves & Butt, and Inner & Outer Thighs. They are easy enough to do and if you haven't worked your muscles in a while you'll definitely feel it.

There is a small nutrition section which goes over some basic aspects of nutrition. The best and simplest idea is his -Cruise Down Plate- is just a way of dividing up your 9" plate as a visual cue to portion size.

There are also quite a few before and after shot with kudos on Jorge's plan. The silky pages are nice to touch but hard to read because of the glare. There are tiny spots to journal but you'd need a separate journal to write anything of value.

One of the biggest things that bugged me about this book was that it implies if you fail you don't accept or respect your body or yourself. A lot of nonsense filler like -In chapter one you will read about...- and -in Chapter 8 you will read about...- is annoying.

Will you lose weight if you stay on this plan? Maybe. You have to develop and follow a daily routine. Will you keep it off? You know the answer to that one. It is affordable but I recommend you check it out of the library and use the money to invest in a yoga or other activity video. Reviewed by M. E. Wood.

5 out of 5 stars This book worked for me.......2007-01-31

This book worked for me. I am 42, in a sedentary job, not really overweight but was beginning to feel flabby and was tired all the time. I did the exercises and kept to the diet 80% of the time and four weeks later feel great. A month ago I was asking my daughter to fetch things from upstairs for me because I was too tired at the end of the day. Now I have the energy to run up those stairs and race her to the mail box and back. I didn't lose much weight --- could have stuck to the diet part better, but I lost an inch off my bust and hips and 2.5 inches from my waist and my clothes are loose. This program got my energy back and it's maintainable for my life style. I've just started my second 28-day cycle with Jorge's original book and I am looking forward to it.--- Also I like the photos. I think he is trying to be encouraging. Like I said, it worked for me.

4 out of 5 stars Now this makes sense!.......2007-01-10

Instead of promising mega weight loss with no effort, Jorge's approach is sensible and healthy. I've lost 13 pounds, a couple each week! It's slow and steady, but in a healthy manner. I think I'm more likely to keep it off this way! An even better incentive...I feel better!

1 out of 5 stars Can't understand the hype.......2006-05-07

Buy this book only if you know nothing about exercise and fitness. It contains only the very basic information. The workouts are too easy and 8 min is not nearly enough to start any fat burning. However, it is very entertaining to read the personal stories of the people that managed to lose weight.

5 out of 5 stars Amateur Extra Class test Prep.......2007-10-01

Gordon West is a knowlegible, well-versed instructor in electronic communication. This book is as good as all his others. Supperlatives to him. The only real problem with the approach to the current licensure is the difficulty in actually learning the material. I have a good memory, and am a "test taker." I will be able to pass the extra test with the material in this book, but I am not sure I will Know It. But, with this book, you WILL pass with ease.

4 out of 5 stars My 10 year has always loved Dav Pilkey...........2007-02-09

My son has enjoyed listening to Dav Pilkey books for years. We would read them to him as an infant, toddler and now he loves to read them himself. He has read the books Dav Pilkey wrote for school age children, all of them. The "Book O' Fun" books, he really has appreciated the activities included in the fun pack books, based on "The Captain Underpants Series." He is especially fond of the step by step examples given for drawing the different characters. We would recommend any of Dav Pilkey books. Your child can grow with the wide range of creative books Dav Pilkey has published. I suggest parents browse Dav Pilkey's various book collection and maybe even give him a try.

4 out of 5 stars For Kids, This Book is Great!.......2005-07-26

At first my seven year-old son, a devout Captain Underpants fan, was doubtful as to whether or not to get this book. He saw the so-so ratings on Amazon and didn't think he was going to enjoy it. But upon purchasing a used version of the book, he found he loved all the activities included.

Inside he found stickers, crossword puzzles, word finds, jokes, a comic: "The Bride of Harry Potty," and step-by-step instructions on how to draw the Captain Underpants characters. It runs about 96 pages, but it's chock full of fun.

Now, don't buy this expecting another Captain Underpants adventure; it's an activity book. If your child is looking for something to ease the wait for the next Captain Underpants book, give this a try.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfied Aunt.......2004-10-20

I bought my nephew this book as his first chapter book and he absolutly loved it, he sat down and read it in one day, and he just turned six. I am not bothered by the misspelled words. After all these books are supposed to be written by 2nd graders, and at that young an age teachers should not be correcting spelling, they should be encouraging children to sound out a word, and then make an educated guess as to how it is spelled. It's about recognizing letter sounds, and letter combinations, not exact spelling. That comes later. I plan on getting the entire series for my nephew for christmas.

4 out of 5 stars I love Captain Underpants.......2004-04-08

I love the activities in this book. The comics made me laugh until I wet my pants. The jokes and comics are hilarious. It's not my most favorite Captain Underpants book but I still love it. Though the jokes are a lliittttlle overoffensive.

3 out of 5 stars Captain Underpants books contain free spelling lessons!.......2003-12-15

I shared the concern of a previous reviewer about the multitude of misspellings in the Captain Underpants books. However, instead of forbidding my 9-year-old son from reading the books (which he loves), I turned the Captain Underpants books into a spelling lesson. I have my son mark the misspelled words and then write them correctly. If he's not sure of the spelling, he looks it up in the dictionary.

Comics! Puzzles! Jokes! Laffs! Flip-O-Rama! Stickers! Sound too good to be true? Captain Underpants (The Adventures of Captain Underpants: An Epic Novel, Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants, etc.) is all about making readers happy, especially in this "really cheesy" (hey, the captain said it, not me) activity book starring everyone's favorite wedgie-powered superhero and his fourth-grade creators, George and Harold. Learn how to write your very own comic book, solve word-find puzzles, find your way out of Doctor Diaper's Devastating Diaper of Doom maze, pick up a few prank tips, make flip-o-rama pictures, complete the Cafeteria Ladies' Crazy Crossword, read all about Hairy Potty, the evil nuclear waste-enhanced toilet with werewolf fangs, and so much more. The exquisitely juvenile humor and (intentionally) unsophisticated artwork will have even reluctant readers clamoring for more from the very talented and irreverent Dav Pilkey. Pass the final exam and you can send away for your P.H.D. (Pilkey Honorary Diploma), make-it-yourself graduation cap with real artificial tassels, and a membership card. All three Terrifying Name Change-O-Charts 2000 are included, as well as a sheet of full-color stickers featuring Turbo Toilet, jockey-clad Captain Underpants, and the snickering troublemakers, George and Harold. (Ages 7 to 10) --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars My 10 year old has always enjoyed Dav Pilkey books............2007-02-09

4 out of 5 stars Encouraged my son to read.......2007-01-03

Although this isn't a great work of literature by any means.....it encouraged my 1st grader to read! He had to get everything Dave Pilkey wrote. He read all summer long! He's in 2nd greade now and has moved on to chapter books, but every once and a while the Captain Underpants books come off the shelf again!

Book Description

BradyGames' Power-Up: How Japanese Video Games Gave the World an Extra Life, by Chris Kohler, is a unique book that gives readers an entertaining and authoritative look at the indelible influence the video gaming, particularly, Japanese gaming, has had on the world. Power-Up is the first English-language work of its kind to examine the reasons behind the success of Japanese video games, rather than focusing on the history of video games. Just some of the features readers will find in this book include:

Profiles of some of the most fascinating Japanese video game designers in the industry, along with a critical look at Japanese video games from their earliest beginnings to new, exciting trends that ride the bleeding edge of popular culture.

Explanations on why Japanese video games are unique and why they resonate so well with young American players.

Fresh insight into classic Japanese video games and the elements that made them so different from American games, the origin of Nintendo, Japan's oldest and largest video game producer, Japanese Role-Playing Games, and much more!

In addition, the future of the Japanese gaming industry is also explored.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read........2007-05-13

This book was an excellent read. Kohler does a terrific job of showing the culture links video games have created between Japan and the Western world. It also shows the stark cultural contrasts. It made me reflect on how much Japanese culture I've been exposed to without knowing it.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading, but touches only the mainstream games.......2007-02-09

This is a good book about japanese videogames and their impact in the western world. The problem, and I agree with the other reviewers, is that the focus deals only with the mainstream and most popular games like Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy. Sure it talks about Dragon Quest(relatively unknown in America until recently) and ICO, but still left many open holes.

But if you forget this flaw, it's really a great and satisfying reading, and the author constructs the text very well. Worth your time. It's a four star book, but I'll give four and half stars (five in Amazon) because it's a good and very little explored theme.

3 out of 5 stars Gaming History in the eye of the beholder..........2006-08-20

History in the eye of the beholder

The boot has very useful information for video game collectors and researchers who are looking for information related to mostly Nintendo oriented lore. I stress its for game collectors and researchers vice enthusiasts. Enthusiasts are looking to be entertained as well as informed and this book does very little entertaining. I found my self reading parts of the book over the course of several months. It just wasn't the page-turner that some other visual treats like "High Score" were. All in all it was worth 13 bucks, however I liken it too a History book on the 20th Century, with key events missing like World War II! Sega is not even mentioned as a footnote! Phantasy Star, Shining Force and several other important events in Gaming History never even captured the interest of the author, and it painfully shows here. Three Stars.

4 out of 5 stars narrow scope, but an interesting read. .......2006-04-12

other people have commented thoroughly about the generalities of this book, and i by-and-large agree. i'd like to add, however, that some of the most interesting parts of this book are the omissions.

for example, they author segues straight from talking about Ninja Gaiden to NOJ/NOA's localization process and standards for content. he mentions that religious iconography, drug use, etc, are all prohibited from being portrayed in Nintendo software, and the list of prohibited content includes cigarette smoking.

the author fails to note the irony, however, that in the aforementioned game there's a bad guy leaning against a light post smoking a cigarette he throws aside before dashing at you. i can only assume it slipped past the censors without them catching it, but my friends and i had noticed it years ago and marvelled that it had been made it through the review process intact.

it's these kinds of things that make me feel like this book is a good general source, but anything deeper than a surface look at the topics covered would require some additional reading/sources.

there are quite a few nuggets of interesting trivia in here - more than enough to make a gamer smile (dragon quest being legally prohibited in Japan from selling on any day except Sunday or a holiday, for example). my copy was a gift; i can attest that it makes a fine one.

3 out of 5 stars Too short and too shallow, but basically worthwhile.......2005-09-14

I enjoyed this book, mostly. Within its scattershot set of chapters about Japanese games in general, there's a fascinating, albeit sketchy, history of Nintendo that contained many small revelations for me, despite that I've been playing video games incessantly since 1987 or so. But the rest of the material was less compelling for me. The chapter about music games and music in games actively frustrated me--it gave only a brief survey of either topic, and seemed to spend most of its words on a tedious, obsessive examination of Final Fantasy albums. A chapter about Akihabara, Japan's premier consumer electronics marketplace, pushed the trivia-to-insight ratio similarly high. In his effort to treat video games as if they deserve the attention of artists, Kohler concentrates too much on material that is only interesting to fans.

Still, on the whole I'm glad I read this book, and I hope Kohler's stated desire to encourage further such works is satisfied; there is clearly much more to say.

Fed up with cold, foggy London and the high cost of real estate, Annie Hawes is persuaded by her sister Lucy to travel to Italy and graft roses for the winter. The sisters arrive in rural Liguria with some formal Italian, no knowledge of rose grafting, and visions of Mediterranean men and sun. What they find is a town full of hard-working, wary olive growers smack in the middle of an olive oil depression who think these two young Englishwomen are nuts. Extra Virgin tells the story of the sisters' acclimation--theirs to Liguria and Liguria to them--and how they fell in love with a crumbling farmhouse in the hills.

Annie quickly finds that though they are only two miles from the Italian Riviera, it might as well be a hundred. Liguria is an old town full of time-honored peculiarities, especially in regard to espresso consumption (never, ever, after lunch; it will close your stomach) and swimming before summertime officially starts. "Seawater at the wrong time of year is even worse for your health than coffee at the wrong time of day, and the beach is only deserted because, as far as the citizens are concerned, if you put so much as a toe into the water before June you are certain to die within the week from exposure or pneumonia or both," says Hawes. Eventually, the sisters are accepted by the townsfolk, though they find the idea of the women buying the farmhouse and running it themselves (there are 50 olive trees on the land) fantastical.

Extra Virgin draws you in to the heart of Liguria and its inhabitants. Hawes has a knack for drawing characters and especially for describing the luscious meals that they are served--and eventually learn to cook. "Lucy and I are kindly allowed to make the tomato-and-basil salad," Hawes says, "and do our best not to be offended by being complemented on how like a proper tomato-and-basil salad it is." Pour yourself an espresso (as long as it's before lunch) or a grappa (aids the digestion), and then sit down to enjoy Extra Virgin. --Dana Van Nest

Book Description

In 1983, a pale Annie Hawes and her equally pale sister leave England for the sun-drenched olive groves of a small Italian town in Liguria. With fantasies of handsome tanned men and swimming in the sea urging them on, they are hired to work for ten weeks to graft roses -- of which they have little knowledge -- along the Italian Riviera, board and lodging included.

But none of the men seem to be under forty, and Ligurians have particular ideas about life, including swimming ("To go swimming in seawater outside the month of July or August is even worse for your health than drinking cappuccino after twelve noon!"). But Annie and her sister are captivated by San Pietro's quirkiness and beauty, and suddenly their brief stay stretches into years, as they are bemused, charmed, and ultimately accepted by the eccentric inhabitants of their adopted home.

Resonating with captivating verve and humor, Extra Virgin dishes up a sumptuous sampling of Italian life from an irresistible new voice.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2007-07-03

Annie Hawes has a wonderfully detailed and descriptive style of writing therefore this was not a story that could be breezed through but rather something to be read slowly and deliberately, savoring every word. She gave a realistic and honest view of life in the Italian countryside which this Italian-American found to be very enlighting!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read.......2007-03-09

Delightful voice, funny anecdotes, cleverly written. You will find yourself chuckling out loud more than once.

5 out of 5 stars Witty & full of interesting detail.......2006-11-12

A great read. Witty, engrossing account of Annie & sister's unplanned purchase of a rundown farmhouse in Liguria on the Italian Riviera, and their (mis)adventures and interactions with the locals. Very funny, affectionately sly observations of human nature and the idiosyncrasies and highlights of Italian village life, olives and the love of good food. And interesting information about local olive farming and wine making and food. I just loved it!

5 out of 5 stars A Sparkling Italian Wine.......2006-10-29

This is a delightful book. Ms. Hawes does a terrific job of bringing the reader into her experience of living in the rural Italian culture as a non-Italian--the confusion, the complications, the hard work, the education and the fun. The characters of her life are not romanticized, but portrayed with both honesty and affection adding an authentic feel often missing in memoirs such as these. Her sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek view of many situations are laugh out loud funny and enhance the pleasure of the read. The cultural misunderstandings between the Italian way and the English way are finely drawn and leave the reader feeling that differences are not only okay, but happy coexistence is all the more interesting because of them.

I loved this book and highly recommend it to others who enjoy Italy and maybe don't have the opportunity to get off the beaten track and really absorb it as they would like. Worth a first read, and a second, too.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2006-07-30

I bought it on a whim, and I can't think of the last time I've been so entertained. I've laughed out loud at numerous points. I'm recommending it all over the place, but am unwilling to lend out my copy as I intend to read it again.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars ok.......2007-05-16

I'll start by saying I enjoyed Dean Karnazes' book immensely. It was self-serving (very), but a quick read and everyone I lent it to really enjoyed it.

I was looking for something similar here, but didn't find it. Maybe that was partly my fault for having such expeectations. However, the book is just not terribly interesting. Maybe the novelty of reading about this wore off after Dean's book, but this book was basically about a fairly banal person (no offense, I'm banal, too) who happens to run long distances.

This book was VERY introspective. She really delves into her thoughts. Partly that was appreciated, but partly it was simply too much and I was not incredibly interested in the minutiae. Pam goes into detail about her anorexia and how her family gets ignored with her races and training.

The book was worth reading (it was a library borrow), but nothing truly fabulous. Certainly I didn't feel as compelled as I did after Dean's book to get my shoes on and put some miles down. After Dean's book, I thought "wow, ultrarunning is actually pretty cool and sounds like it could be fun in a sick way". I never, ever had that impression after reading this book. The way the running was described was more of a grind.

4 out of 5 stars Honest Account.......2007-05-15

I really enjoyed reading this book, as it is an extremely honest account of her life as she sees it. Both good and bad. I didnt expect to read about her marriage for example, but found that her points of view were very interesting and it possible to get a better and more complete understanding of the person. She is not just someone who can run really far...
Its an easy read and eventhough I do not share a lot of her points of view, the book is very hard to put down and it is fascinating to attempt to understand what drives her extreme performance.

4 out of 5 stars Great story, interesting writing style.......2007-04-18

I am enjoying reading this book because it's easy to read and the subject matter keeps my interest. Pam Reed has led a very interesting life, and her story is real. It's not just fluff and "oh my goodness, training has been really hard, but I am winning major competitions now," etc...Instead, she is honest, real and shocking sometimes. My only issue with this book is how it's written. You can really tell Pam is not a writer. The thing that gets me is that there are actually grammatical errors throughout the book, and Pam uses words like "like" and "sort of", "kind of", "really, really", etc....lots of terms that sound like she's just rambling on to you about things over the phone. That sort of bothered me but some might actually like that style.

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Average.......2007-04-10

After Dean Karnazes' self-promoting book which made me nauseous, I was really looking forward to Pam Reed's take on ultra-running. The elements on running were excellent, and inspiring. The parts about growing-up, anorexia, her failed marriage, etc. were not. This book should have edited the personal stuff, and focused more on the running. Not only was there too much about anorexia, I had this feeling that she has not truly conquered this problem. She also sounded very defensive in spots. Would have really benefited from a professional editor, but I do like the fact a book like this was published.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Pam .......2007-03-18

To be honest the title really turned me off. She clearly doesn't have a self-esteem problem. Even after reading this book I still feel this way. But give her credit. She's honest about it and tells why she feels this way. I think she would have sold a lot more books with a different title, but that's just my opinion.

A review for a book like this is in some ways hard to write. You're supposed to be somewhat analytical when instead you feel emotional. I'm sad to be done reading this book. Over the few months I felt like I've gotten to know this person and now that's its over, I bummed.

A comparison between this book and one by Dean Karnazes is interesting. Both authors are really great at what they do and both are extremely tough. But Pam has warts and frailties and she struggles with stupid ( human ) things. In that way I can much more readily identify with her much more than Dean.
