4 out of 5 stars A Season of Joy.......2004-10-25

This book is based on a fictional family by the name of Steed. They are one of the many families that are in this book but they are the main one. This book is historical and most of the things in it really did happen. The Latter Day Saints moving from Palmyra just to end up in Nauvoo is one of them. It is one in a series of nine books and I think that series is a very good one. You have to read the ones before it for it to make sense though. But mainly in this novel they tell about how the saints traveled from Quincy, Illinois all the way to Nauvoo.

It tells about the suffering and trials all the saints had to go through. A main thing that happened in the Steed family in this book is that Joshua and Caroline's older boy Will, was sold to a riverboat man to work as a part of the crew. It is confusing but Will thinks his father is dead and the Mormons are the ones who killed him. But he doesn't know that some Missourians had shot him in the back and blamed it on the Mormons. But his father ended up surviving from the shot. But towards the end of the book Will is reunited with his long lost father and family...

There is a lot of romance and family problems too. They tell about how the family was split apart because of their beliefs and then how they came together because of them too. I like how he explains all about the family members and what they look like. I think my favorite is Savannah, she is four when the book ends and she is Joshua and Caroline's daughter. She has beautiful red hair and the clearest blue eyes. She is spoild and sounds absolutely darling.

5 out of 5 stars The Work and the Glory.......2002-12-06

I have read all 9 books several times. With each reading, I not only pick up on things that I have missed before, but I come to a much better knowlegde of who I am, and the things I stand for. Althought the Steeds are a fictional family, everything that they experience is something that a pioneer family experienced. Gerald N Lund not only tells a fantastic story but he tells an historically correct story. My life is better for having read this series. I would recommend Fire of the Covenant, and his new series on the life of Christ. They will make you cry, laugh, and feel more than you can possibly imagine.

5 out of 5 stars I love this series!.......2001-01-02

I love this series. I have read the first 4 books so far and my testimony of the Gospel has grown so much. I'm sixteen years old and I recommend this series to anyone and everyone, even if you aren't a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They are wonderful books and everyone should read them.

5 out of 5 stars The Work and the Glory Volumes 1-4.......2000-11-04

I'm not one that enjoys reading at all! I got the itch to read the Work and the Glory. I only have the first 4 volumes. I COULD NOT put the book down! I read all 4 in one month, which is totally amazing to me! I felt like I was part of the Steed, Smith families, I cried and laughed, I really felt like I was one of them. It really makes you appreciate all they went through for us! Thank You Mr. Lund for opening a whole new world of reading for me.

5 out of 5 stars Best series Ever!.......2000-06-01

This series is the best you seriosly can't put it down I have to admit though the first one was way hard to get into! But, after that I couldn't put it down! I felt like I was apart of the Steed, family! I mean when they had hardships I felt there pain and when they had happy I felt it! This is a must read For anyone! I am on number 9 for the 2nd time!

Book Description

Creating Circles and Ceremonies is the accumulation of decades of circles, ceremonies, rituals, Mystery plays, initiations, rites of passage, and other magickal workings co-created by the Zell-Ravenhearts, today's foremost Wizard/Witch couple.

For more than 30 years, Oberon and Morning Glory have traveled widely throughout the worldwide magickal community—participating in gatherings, conducting workshops, and creating rituals for groups large and small. They have met and made Magick with the leaders of many traditions: Celtic Shamanism, British Dianic, Italian Strega, Welsh Witchcraft, Faerie Trad, Ceremonial Magick, Ozark Druidry, the New Reformed Order of the Golden Dawn (NROOGD), Hinduism, Native American tribes, Greek and Egyptian mythology, and the futuristic Church of All Worlds.

Here, in one easy-to-read volume, is their collection of chants, invocations, circle-castings, quarter-callings, spells, and ceremonies. It is also a "kit" to use to assemble your own rituals, for any season or reason:

Book I presents a basic ritual outline. Each element is followed by numerous examples which may be "plugged in" to customize your own ceremony.

Book II gives numerous examples of actual ceremonies: Esbats (full Moons) and special occasions; Rites of Passage; Mysteries and Initiations; spells and consecrations. These can be adapted and modified as needed for any size group—from small family gatherings in your living room, to huge outdoor celebrations involving thousands of people.

Book III provides an assortment of full rituals and ritual elements for celebrations of the eight great seasonal festivals called the Wheel of the Year. Versions of these have been commemorated for millennia in most traditional cultures of the Northern Hemisphere; and today are universal throughout the worldwide Pagan community.

5 out of 5 stars If I could have only one..........2007-08-03

If I was going to be stranded on a desert island and the Fates ordained that I could only have one Pagan book there is absolutely no doubt that this would be the ONE. It is so power-packed with information, lots of nifty line drawings, and all is written in such an enjoyable style. It's by far the best Pagan book I own and one that I refuse to be without.

5 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL.......2007-07-04

I am really enjoying this book. I wish there were more out there like this. I have several of the authors sculptures and found the same attention to detail within the the pages of the book. I highly reccomend it to anyone interested in Wicca/Witchcraft. It give real information about many subjects that are not often written about. It was a joy to find some of the older and well remembered rites and stories within.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource.......2007-05-19

This is an incredible resource for anyone who is organizing, conducting or writing a ritual. I had always been a solitaire, but when I was asked to perform a sabbat ritual for a group of beginners, I jumped on the opportunity. Because my own personal rituals were highly impromptu, I knew the group ritual needed more structure. I shopped for a few good books, and I am very glad I bought this one. I highly recommend it for both beginners and those with more experience. It's not a book you would necessarily read from cover to cover (although you could), but is more of a useful collection of writings you can turn to every time you wish to create a ritual.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-04-11

This book is the ultimate guide to the solitary. It can be quite difficult to organize your family celebrations without the aid and expertise of a priest/ess. This book helps me to create rituals and circles that the whole family can participate in (children and Christians alike) at a level that everyone is capable and comfortable with. It has also been a great help in organizing my private ceremonies. Even when there is no reason to cast a circle or perform a ceremony the book contains a great deal of daily inspiration. It's truely herbal tea for the pagan soul.

Creating Circles & Ceremonies
By Oberon & Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart
New Page Books, 2006

Review by Anodea Judith

Oberon Zell-Ravenheart and his wife, Morning Glory, have done it at last. Compiling decades of experience in creating rituals and ceremonies for all occasions, from the celebrations of the seasons to blessing your dinner or a new home, this book will provide ideas, information, theory, and practice to bring a sense of the sacred into everyday life.

Author of the acclaimed Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard, Oberon has written a Pagan bible that every practitioner of magic and ritual will want to have on a shelf within easy reach. With spells, chants, invocations, herbal recipes, and more, you won't want to go through a moon cycle without using this book.

From my many years of working together with this magical couple in the Church of All Worlds, I am delighted that our vast treasury of Pagan liturgy has finally been written down. Collected from many contributors, this compilation brings together the best of the Pagan community in poetry and song, innovation and invocation, including our Magic 101 class that was offered for many years as a primer in magical training.

The wealth of information herein is divided into three smaller sections. Book I, "The Magic Circle" outlines the basic theory and practice of creating ceremonies, such as creating sacred space, calling the quarters, invoking spirits, deities, or helpers, and basic ritual etiquette. Book II, "Rites and Rituals" describes ceremonies for all occasions, including rites of passage, marriages, and initiations. Book III: "Wheel of the Year" then applies these principles to the eight seasonal holidays that mark the solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter days of the year. The final Appendices contain information you will use as a reference for years to come.

Lavishly illustrated with Oberon's unique artwork, this book is destined to be as classic a book for ritual recipes as "The Joy of Cooking" was to the culinary world.

Book Description

Even before their record-breaking 1998 season, the New York Yankees were recognized as the greatest team in the history of baseball. Who will ever forget Mickey "The Mick" Mantle in 1956, or Roger Maris in 1961, or Reggie "Mr. October" Jackson in 1980. Yet, who among the Yankee legends are the fifty greatest? In New York Yankees: Seasons of Glory, authors Hageman and Wilbert believe they have compiled the ultimate, though bound to be controversial, list. Using the Sabermetric rating system-a series of complex mathematical formulas that goes far beyond analyzing a player's statistics for a given year - they have chosen not only the best players, but also the season they consider the crowning achievement of each player. Each profile in New York Yankees: Seasons of Glory provides the stats for the selected player's most noteworthy game of glory plus scores of other stats on such things as the winningest teams by percentage to the top ten single performers of the depl! eted wartime leagues. Each entry also includes news of what else was happening in both baseball and the world during the players monumental season.

Poised to ignite friendly, if heated, arguments and settle some longstanding debates, New York Yankees: Seasons of Glory pays tribute to everyone who ever donned Yankee Pinstripes - as well as those who cheered this historic team from the bleachers in right field.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A fun read!.......1999-11-24

I truly enjoyed this book. Each piece (and there are 50!) takes you back to the particular year! It has all the stats on the individual player in his best season. It has lots of fantastic photos and a terrific section on the 1998 Yankees! At the end of the book, there is a section that allows me to record my own memorable seasons with my favorite team! A must have for every Yankee fan, and those fans of baseball history!

1 out of 5 stars A lousy book.......1999-11-22

It's almost unprecedented for me to return a baseball book. It's almost impossible to find a baseball book I won't enjoy. If the book's about the Yankees, the odds of either would be non existent. Well, at least I thought they would be non existent until I began to read this one.

The book contains no new good information & is filled with mistakes. Also, the author's system of rating the players creates a premise that's flawed from the beginning.

If you know enough about baseball to know Snuffy Stirnweiss wasn't an all time Yankee great, then you find this book insulting to your intelligence.

Book Description

Hugo and Nebula award-winning author David Brin is one of the most eloquent, imaginative voices in science fiction.  Now he returns with a new novel rich in texture, universal in theme, monumental in scope--pushing the genre to new heights.

Young Maia is fast approaching a turning point in her life.  As a half-caste var, she must leave the clan home of her privileged half sisters and seek her fortune in the world.  With her twin sister, Leie, she searches the docks of Port Sanger for an apprenticeship aboard the vessels that sail the trade routes of the Stratoin oceans.

On her far-reaching, perilous journey of discovery, Maia will endure hardship and hunger, imprisonment and loneliness, bloody battles with pirates and separation from her twin.  And along the way, she will meet a traveler who has come an unimaginable distance--and who threatens the delicate balance of the Stratoins' carefully maintained, perfect society....

Both exciting and insightful, Glory Season is a major novel, a transcendent saga of the human spirit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A True Season of Glory.......2005-12-14

This is, in my opinion, David Brin's crowning work, and one of my favorite books of all time.

It is an engaging and entertaining read, with something to offer almost anyone; there are aspects of mystery, fantasy, high seas, romance, adventure, and of course, science fiction.

This book follows the story of Maia, a young girl born to both a mother and a father on a world where society is dominated by of clans of specially skilled female clones. It is in part a strange coming of age story, as Maia tries to find her own niche to fill, hoping to found a clan of her own. Her world of Stratos, she finds, has something of a dark past, a past which soon becomes very much a part of her present as she travels over most of the face of her world, meeting a whole host of intriguing characters... including one who may bring their world's past to the present for their entire society.

David Brin outdid himself (and most authors) with the detail and complexity of the world and society present in every aspect of this book.

The only drawback to this book is that often men will be turned away from it by the 'feminism' of said society; it is extremely woman-based, and many men seem to think this is a slur upon men in general. In this reader's opinion, however, it is just a study on a potential societal development thanks to certain technological advances, and not intended in any way as a slur on anyone, except perhaps the tendencies of human civilization as a whole.

Even the length of the book (which is considerable) I cannot in any way consider a drawback. In fact, when I finished it the first time, all I could do was wish that it had been even longer. It is never slow or boring, really, and you continue to want to turn the pages all the way through it.

All in all, this is a book I would... and do... recommend to anyone with even the vaguest interest in science fiction.

3 out of 5 stars Glory Season -- more like glory months.......2005-11-16

The first 2/3rds of this novel are as good as any current sf out there -- definitely up to Brin's standard, and full of wonderful universe building. But the last third is more than a disappointment, it's a cheat. When a novel is written like a mystery (a socialogical one in this case, not a murder ), and then at the end, nothing what-so-effing-ever is done with all of the many hints and plot threads of the rest of the book -- it's worse than being left hanging; it makes one regret all of the collaboration one does as part of the reading process.

2 out of 5 stars I keep laughing when they call this "radically feminist".......2005-08-09

now, maybe this society is supposed to be feminist, but please consider: it looks like the women are in charge, it's supposed to... but ultimately the women are doing all the work while the men are off on their boats, and the men only come around when they are ready for the women to beg them for sex. sorry no, not fem at all.

David Brin, and Kim Stanley Robinson, and Robert A. Heinlein, all write from the woman's supposed point of view, and they all write very well and I like their stories. but no woman, now or in the past or in the future, here or there or anywhere else in the universe, thinks like these men suppose they do.

I think they try, and are not meaning to offend. However, Brin just does not get it, which is no big surprise really. After all, he is not a woman.

Aside from that, I liked the story quite a bit, up until the end. The ending was pretty cheap; there was no sense of resolution at all. And yes, the other characters needed more development. I expect better from David Brin.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, the ending was lame, but the rest was pretty good.......2003-05-30

It's a very well written book, and the main character and her society is believable. Aside from the ending, the only real problem I had with it was that none of the other characters were as multidimensional as Maia. Her twin and Renna the alien could definitely have used some more character development. It's a good book if you're into sociatal critiques and lots of discusion on imaginary games especially, but I'd stear clear if you want nonstop action.

2 out of 5 stars The End does not justify the Means........2003-03-25

This is a book that I adored until the final let's call it 20 pages or so. The culture of this matriarchal world was painted in an intelligent way without resorting to some form of amazonian fantasy, with checks and balances in their system. The characters were engaging and the over-reaching plot was fascinating... and then the ending comes. What impact would the ending of a Sherlock Holmes mystery have if Moriarity fiendishly clever were to blurt out the details of his plan ala a James Bond villain? What impact the ending of the initial Star Wars trilogy if the Emperor had tripped and fallen down that shaft?

The journey of these characters, and what you learn about them, leads towards one resolution, and the ending comes not so much as a 'surprise' as an incredible let-down..... I was heartily disappointed.

    Product Description

The popular, award-winning series The Work and the Glory continues with A Season of Joy, which literally spans the globe as it follows the story of the restored Church and the fictional Steed family through two eventful years (1839-1841). It is a season of rejuvenationas, after the horrors of the Missouri persecutions, the Saints find refuge across the Mississippi in Illinois, where they found the city of Nauvoo. Their community grows rapidly, miracles occur (including Joseph's raising of many from their sickbeds), the work of the Restoration rolls forward — and the Steeds are there for it all. Matthew and Derek accompany members of the Twelve on the Quorum's mission to England, and there they witness a dramatic harvest of souls, including Wilford Woodruff's remarkable success. Meanwhile, the fate of Will Steed is made known, and characters from previous volumes reenter the story. In addition, since this period in Church history is not without its tensions, its trials, and its tragedies, members of the Steed family experience all of these as well. Through some of the most realistic and tender scenes of the series, readers will come to know these beloved characters even more intimately than ever before. As with the previous volumes, personalities from Church history come to vivid life here, particularly those of the incomparable Joseph Smith and the faithful, steadfast Brigham Young. Here, then, is another exciting, engaging installment in this acclaimed series, a story that reveals God's infinite mercy and wisdom in granting his people a season of relief, a season of hope, a season of joy.

    Book Description

The Right Stuff of the "Brickyard"-the name given by the racers to the fabled Indianapolis Speedway-is chronicled in Against Death and Time, for one fatal season, 1955, in the post-war glory years of racecar driving. This book tells the story of the reckless, dispossessed young men who raced not for fame or money-there was none-but for "the sheer unvarnished hell of it." Brock Yates has been writing for Car and Driver for more than thirty years and is one of the best-known people in the racing world. He raced his own car for a season in a Plimpton-like adventure recorded in Sunday Driver, one of his six books. He has published widely, from Playboy to the Wall Street Journal, and has appeared on every major television network as both a racing and automotive industry commentator. An evocative writer with an absolute command of the period, Brock integrates unexpected and fascinating detail into a character-driven story of men compelled to compete against themselves, time, and death. Brock's Dutch-like strategy of a fictional narrator observing, interrogating, and reporting on his real-life protagonists imparts the immediacy of fiction to this minutely accurate account. Black-and-white photographs are featured.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars tolerable for a race fan, unless you also happen to read books..........2007-08-20

I read this book because on a particular day I was in the mood for a book about racing (being the month of May), and the one Economaci did is fairly unfindable in book stores. This looked pretty good - Roger Ward, Mad Russian, the Le Mans disaster - seemed like it might be a nice history book.

The problem with this is not necessarily the content, some of the info was interesting, and I found only few very minor errors that I can't even remember...The problem is the way the content is told. This "I was actually there" first person this is insanely unbelievable to the the point of asinine fantasy. Being there when Vukovich was killed (and being a vicarious pal to boot) is believable. Then being at the Le Mans tragedy...could have happened to a few people. But being at Indy in 1955, Le Mans in 1955, being friends with James Dean and waiting on him to arrive before his death, nailing the Warner Brothers executive's race car groupie daughter, meeting Enzo Ferrari during the early days of gp, and on and on...

I had a good bit of difficulty just finishing this thing and I love open wheel racing in any form it takes. But sportswriters are very seldom good at writing fiction, and this is no different. So if you are in the mood for some airline reading on the way to Indianapolis in late may....get something else.

2 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment, Sloppy Writing.......2007-03-15

Ugh. What a disappointment. This book badly needed an editor -- any editor. It reads like a high school draft that was rushed together before deadline. Yates is terrific in the pages of Car and Driver, where he's got adult supervision, but this book is unfinished and unprofessional. He contradicts himself, misspells words -- including, ironically, 'editorial' -- invents new words, and defines the same term three times in as many chapters. There's one whole chapter where lowercase L's are used in place of the number 1.

Apart from that, his peculiar "faction" or I-was-there style doesn't really suit the material, or his talents. He's still writing a history, he just inserts the words 'I' and 'me' from time to time to liven it up. It doesn't make the story compelling, just lame. Too bad.

1 out of 5 stars Perhaps Yates' most disappointing work..........2006-05-15

After reading the enthralling 'Cannonball' a few years ago and the passionate 'Hot Rod' soon after, I was looking forward to 'Against Death and Time'. As a rule, I am a fan of all things motorsport and I enjoy historical fiction, however, I was supremely disappointed in this offering. Yates' main character seems to be a blatant reproduction of Levy's 'Hank Lyons' character from the 'The Last Open Road' series. If you are looking for an interesting book by Yates, buy 'Cannonball', if you are looking for a fictionalized account of the early days of sportscar racing, buy something by B.S. Levy.

    1 out of 5 stars Re-gifter!.......2006-01-02

I recieved this book as a X-Mas gift. RE-GIFTER. Brock Yates' writing reads to me like that of a fellow who has too much going on and decided at the last minute to add "write this book" to the list.

There's a few decent passages, but so much of this seems read as bland, hurried text. I own it, but I sort of wish I didn't.

1 out of 5 stars One Fatal Attempt at a Novel.......2005-11-22

Brock Yates brings impressive credentials to his effort to write what is loosely called a novel. "Against Death and Time" is set in 1955, a tragic year in auto racing history, and is told through the eyes of an unnamed free-lance writer. The book's concept sounded great, but I found the execution to be horrible.

A plot really doesn't exist in the conventional sense. The chapters simply follow the narrator around the world to the locations of numerous tragic accidents that year, culminating with James Dean's in central California. At least half the chapters read like straight non-fiction with no "plot development" other than "I flew to France." There is no dramatic tension involved in the book whatsoever, although the author does throw in one jet-set babe, apparently for no reason other than to introduce the narrator to James Dean.

The story might still have worked if it were not for the distractions from poor research and editing.

A dozen times, he refers to the clear-blue flame of the the methanol fuel used in Championship and Sprint cars. In 1955 these cars burned gasoline, and would do so until methanol and fuel bladders were adopted following the terrible main straight crash at Indianapolis in 1964 that killed Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald. Later in the book, he has Buddy Holly and the Crickets playing "That'll be the Day" at a Hollywood party. Unfortunately, that song wasn't released until 1957. Elsewhere, the narrator is assigned to write an article for "Liberty" magazine, but that assignment is later cancelled by "The Saturday Evening Post." An unusual business practice, to be sure.

Finally, I have never seen a book with as many typos in my life. I question whether this book actually had an editor. There are more typos in this one book - over a dozen (I lost count) than on the rest of my bookshelf put together.

The world of auto racing in 1955 could have been a really good yarn. "Against Death and Time" is not.

5 out of 5 stars Great Color And Great Memories.......2005-02-19

I've been a Braves fan since 1977, and the 1991 season still stands as the greatest rush I've ever experienced. From nine back at the All-Star break, the Braves put on a pennant race for the ages. When it was over, they had outlasted the Dodgers by one game.

So they went up against the now two-time NL East champs, the Pirates. Trailing three games to two, they went back to Pittsburgh and not only beat them - they didn't even allow them to score!!! 21-year old Steve Avery and 24-year old John Smoltz - the only Brave still with the team in 2005 - made believers of all of baseball.

And then came the greatest World Series in history.

        Still.

I only hate how it ended - and I can't blame that one on Rosenberg. Enjoy the book.

          Book Description

Jesus ministered to many but focused on a few. What makes this strategy so compelling? Because he understood the secret of living forward—spiritual multiplication through intentionally influencing a few people at a time. He knew that by concentrating on a few faithful men and women they would leave behind them a legacy of people whose influence would extend beyond a generation or two; in fact, a legacy that would continue to multiply until he returned.

This book is written to stimulate you toward a passionate desire to change people. The key is not so much how you pour your life into people but that you are a person worth following. God placed you here to invest your life in others. This book will show you how to live and speak truth into the lives of others in a way that will transform them forever.

Some of the essential leadership characteristics discussed in this book:

          • Self-disipline
          • Encouragment
          • Gentleness
          • Confrontation
