I present my heartest thanks to the author
This book is of high quality both in their pictures and its text. I recommend the book for the relevant individuals in this topic (hematopathology)

4 out of 5 stars Exceptionally well organized reference with great tables........1998-10-19

You may love this book or feel it is just so-so. I'm in the former category. As a pathology resident I refer to it often. Although it is sometimes difficult to read for long periods, it serves extremely well as a reference source. Information is often presented in more than one way i.e. in text form or in tables/charts. The illustrations are outstanding, although, like most books, idealized. I highly recommend it.

For over one thousand years, Da Mo's timeless Classics have been considered the key to enlightenment and long-lasting youth. Now, Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming, one of the worlds leading authorities on Qigong, has made these ancient and profound teachings accessible to everyone!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The search .......2006-07-27

Very interesting, but you have to have the courage to gamble with your health. Yet if you already took a dive from a mountain top "a la Castaneda" you might enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars This book is rare and precious.......2003-05-20

Richard S said it all, and well. My only additional comment is that the format of this book is structured quite simply, and it is ideal. First, the exact original Chinese text is included. This preserves this rare information, and offers scholars the original words to research themselves. Then, an exact English translation is offered of the Chinese. This can sometime read 'choppy' because it is quite hard to translate between ANCIENT Chinese and modern English - due to the fact that many words and phrases from ancient China only existed in Buddhist Qigong society and were unknown in the Chinese language otherwise.

Lastly, Master Yang offers his explanation of the translation, based on his decades of experience - without all the mystical nonsense, and with detailed explanation of what is happening in the body from a modern, Western scientific view.

It doesn't get better than that.

And yes, this training is only for people with the time and will to commit to careful practice with the guidance of an experienced Qigong master. This is one of the few Qigong practices that is potentially dangerous. If your 'master' doesn't know the information in this book, and you intend to study Yi Jin Jing, find another master. If you want Qigong for health, longevity, and general benefits, practice a different set of Qigong.

This training is to transform the physical body to a state at which it will be physically capable of supporting your energetic body in your meditation practice, so that you may have the physical stamina and mastery of your Qi circulation to pursue enlightenment. Nothing less. Without this training, do not use the word "enlightened."

The author of the original text, Bodhidharma, was very clear in saying that without this internal cultivation, all search for enlightenment will be in vain. Don't waste your life!

3 out of 5 stars Valuable source material about transforming vital energy.......2002-03-29

Yang uses Buddhist and Taoist documents, reproduced and translated section by section, to explain the esoteric training methods Yi Jin Jing and Xi Sui Jing. The first method generate qi to strengthen muscles and tendons, the second teaches Huan Jing or how to return vital energy through the spine to energize the brain. Evidently very baffled by certain aspects of these exercises, Yang sometimes has to conjecture. His translation is uncertain, yet this description includes valuable source material withheld in the popular books by Mantak Chia. This is an early work of a prolific writer who could really use an editor, and readers may find the non-standard Cantonese transliterations rather puzzling.

      3 out of 5 stars Not recommended..........2000-12-14

First, a comment on the format and style of this book. The book has a combination of both English and Chinese, with frequent "paragraphs" of Chinese included in the text. I'm not sure why this was done but I found it both irritating and confusing since I don't understand Chinese. The English is poorly worded and often seems, to me, to be missing information. The book is also lacking an index.

The drawings are rather simplistic and, compared to many other Qigong books, poorly drawn. The "exercises" are often depicted in only one frame with arrows supposedly indicating the movements; this is quite confusing and doesn't really show the intention very well.

The book is oriented around dividing Qigong into four "distinct areas" with "specific" exercises from each discipline. Not only have I never seen this type of division before but, again, the division is very arbitrary and little is done explain the relationships between these divisions. I found errors in the "history" sections as well. I suspect they have been plagarized from other books and I would recommend the reader to investigate other sources such as Grigg and Deng Ming Dao.

Then there are the actual exercises. Some of these can be found in many other books (although without the arbitrary divison of this book) and an interested Qigong practitioner probably has them already. However, many exercises in this book, particularly in the Martial section, are extremely dangerous if practiced without proper supervision.

In the history of Qigong there are numerous stories of master's who didn't transfer 100% of their lessons to disciples with the end result being crippled students. Many of the exercises in this book, particularly those utilizing sticks to pressurize points and blows to the body can lead directly to serious injury.

The book does not, in my opinion, satisfactorily explain this fact, nor does it outline a progression of study to lead into the exercises. It also doesn't even appear to mention many of the "standard" Qigong exercises such as "hugging the tree" that have a long proven history of providing benefit.

All in all, I was very disappointed with this book and certainly don't recommend it. Spend the money on finding a good master in your area and you'll be a lot farther ahead...

5 out of 5 stars Profound Translation of Rare Ancient Manuscripts.......2000-05-29

Anyone desiring to understand Qi, whether for Feng Shui, Marital Arts, or any other reason, must understand the internal human Qi, and the best avenue to this understanding is through Qigong.

This profound book is definitely recommended reading for a multitude of reasons, including its great contribution to the understanding and cultivation of Qi utilizing obscure and elusive techniques developed in antiquity through enlightenment.

Da Mo, also known as Bodhidarma, was an Indian of the Mahayana Buddhist Sect. He was considered a Bodhisativa who greatly affected the Chinese Shaolin Sect. His theories incorporated that the physical body is important and must be clean and strong (both externally and internally) in order to attain enlightenment.

Two rare ancient texts are attributed to him, both of which have been comprehensively researched and eloquently translated by Dr. Jwing-Ming Yang and offered with historical data and commentary. This second volume is an excellent sequel to the author's prerequisite book, The Root of Chinese Qigong : Secrets for Health, Longevity & Enlightenment.

The Yi Jin Jing is the Muscle Changing Text and instructs techniques for physical health and physical strength.

The Xi Sui Jing is the Marrow & Brain Cleansing Text and instructs techniques for internal cleansing and strength of the physical body via the internal organs including the blood and immune system. It further describes ancient practices designed as methods for channelling what can be termed sexual energy to energize the brain and gain enlightenment.

These two texts may initially appear more applicable to the channeling of male sexual energy as they were written in an ancient society predominated by male monks. However, these texts afford a great contribution to the understanding and cultivation of Qi within the framework of "Being" and the information is pertinent to both men and women.

Buy this book, it is essential reading for anyone interested in defined techniques for longevity and enlightenment.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Heaven and Dark Angel.......2007-01-29

For once, Heaven Casteel feels like she could be happy. But after she marries her childhood sweetheart, Logan Stonewell, and goes back to Farthy, her mother's childhood home, her fragile happiness is shattered.

After I read Dark Angel (the book leading up to this one), I knew I would have to read the next one in the series. However, I was slightly disappointed in this one. Though the plot was just as tragic, dark, and dramatic as the previous book, the writing in itself has gone down. There were phrases and phrases of the same thing over and over again. The descriptions of Heaven's thoughts and feelings seemed to be repetitive and dragged out. The romance aspect of the book was rather cheesy, and the characters were somewhat destroyed. But in the end, if you skip the details and only read the dialogue, this novel is actually pretty good. I liked how the relationship between Heaven and Fanny resulted in the end, and how they seemed to finally make peace with each other. Heaven also learned that "Pa" did love her some. All in all, it wasn't the best VC Andrews book out there, but considering that this book was written by a ghost writer, it came together nicely at the end and was rather enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Good in parts, bad in others..........2006-11-17

This book is the third in the series and the first one that the ghostwriter did. We might've been better off if the last three books had not been written. Still, they're worth a look.

This one begins on a sweet, happy note, with Heaven and Logan getting married in Winnerrow after reuniting in "Dark Angel". Heaven finds peace and contentment at last as a teacher and newlywed. Sadly, though, this won't last.

Unbeknownst to Heaven, Logan has been offered a prominent position with Tatterton Toys, and Logan convinces Heaven to quit her job so they can move to Farthinggale Manor. Heaven is reluctant, yet plays the doormat (a typical characterization for females under this GW). As usual, things start to go wrong.

Once back at Farthy, Heaven feels her time with Logan is being taken by Tony and the business. She still feels sorrow for losing her beloved Troy and still feels his presence around her. While Logan is busy and spending a lot of time away from her, Heaven goes back to the cottage and discovers that someone still lives there; who, she isn't sure of.

One night someone comes into her room. She goes back to the cottage the next day and discovers someone hiding from her. She follows him and discovers that it is Troy, who is alive despite the fact that his "body" was found in "Dark Angel". This irritates me, because the explanation is flimsy and makes no sense. The GW could've done this better, but took the lazy way out. I don't think Troy should've been brought back anyway, simply because it takes the tragedy out of his "suicide" in "Dark Angel". It discredits the real VC's work and I think his staying dead would've made the series more tragic and meaningful.

Heaven and Troy have one last forbidden night together, and not long after, Heaven becomes pregnant. But she doesn't know if Troy or Logan is the father, because she's recently been with both of them. To make matters worse, Logan has slept with her sister Fanny, and now Fanny is pregnant as well.

Then Luke and his wife Stacie die, leaving their only child, Drake, an orphan. Heaven retrieves him and brings him back to Farthy, but they don't stay long. The ugly truth about Luke's continuous distance from Heaven comes out. Then Tony, in a state of drunkenness, tries to rape Heaven. She packs her bags and calls Logan to tell him she and Drake are coming home to Winnerrow.

Soon after, the toy factory opens in Winnerrow. At the celebration party, Drake goes missing. Heaven discovers that Fanny has kidnapped him, and both get lawyers. A bitter custody battle ensues, and Heaven ends up doing to Drake what she despised Luke for doing to her. She becomes a hypocrite.

At the end, all works out well, with Heaven giving birth to a girl, Annie, whom she realizes is Troy's, and Fanny gives birth to a boy, Luke Jr. Heaven also receives a package from Farthy which contains a music box, a mini version of the cottage with mini figures in it that resemble Troy and Heaven. It plays one of Troy's favorite Chopin melodies. Troy knows Annie is his, and Heaven vows to tell her the truth someday. All in all, not a bad read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! .......2005-07-17

I really loved this book. I felt sorry for Heaven, she has it rough. Really rough, I couldn't imagine having a sister like Fanny, she's a little witch. Now I'm off to 'Gates of Paradise'!

1 out of 5 stars dont let this author publish as vc andrews!!.......2005-07-15

I was suprised when I first read virginia andrews books, I thought they'd be like the bold and the beautifull or something. I was really suprised to find that they were actually very well written with complex characters. I read the flowers in the attic series when I was 13 and the casteel seies at 15. I'm now 25 and picked up the casteel seies again, I really enjoyed heaven and dark angel but didnt even bother finishing fallen hearts! I was unsure until I looked here if it was written by her but was pretty certain it wasnt as the characters are completly different and the writng style is more suited to something you'd read in a romance book you'd pick up at the supermarket.

I liked Heaven in the 1st 2 books but she was stuck up and annoying in the 3rd. And when did it make any mention of Tony having feelings for her other then as a father in 1 and 2, all of a sudden in fallen hearts he became enamoured with her!

Poor Virginia Andrews having her name associated with such bad work, it would have been better to have left the series as it was. This book and the ones following it were obviosly written purely to cash in on the sucess of the earlier stories.

      2 out of 5 stars Oh Dear..........2005-05-06

This book seems a major betrayal of its predecessors, "Heaven" and "Dark Angel", perhaps because it was the first one written by the ghostwriter. The plot revolves around 1) Troy not "really" being dead, 2) Logan cheating on Heaven with Fanny, 3) Heaven and Logan moving into Farthy 4) Heaven trying to resolve her issues with Luke by adopting his son with his third wife.

None of these four things should ever, ever have happened. For one thing, reviving Troy is so soap-opera and so ridiculous it strains credulity. "Dark Angel" ended with Heaven realizing she wanted to marry her childhood sweetheart, Logan, who loved her back when she was hill scum and not an heiress. It was a sweet realization and we were all happy and content that her saga ended well. Now, she's presented again with her Troy, the silly, girly character from Dark Angel who we wished really was dead.

Second, why did Logan sleep with Fanny? That was so unnecessary. Andrews makes it clear in "Heaven" that he is uninterested in her exhibitionism and avoids her. It seemed such a betrayal of their marriage and of the sweet relationship between the two which had been previously established. There was another unfaithful husband created by Andrews herself-Arden in "My Sweet Audrina"-but in Arden's defense, Audrina wouldn't sleep with him. Logan wasn't that sort of character and had more inner strength besides.

Third, why would Heaven, knowing Tony raped her mother and is a crazy old pervert, move into Farthy? Why would sensible Logan? They were asking for problems.

Fourth, why did Heaven need to adopt Luke's son? I thought that was out of character for her, odd, and unattractive. Her "buying" the kid from Fanny didn't reflect well on her, either.

A big, big failure. Stop after "Dark Angel" because this book will really disappoint. Its sequel is even worse, and I made the mistake of reading that, too. Stop while you're ahead!

As all of V.C. Andrews books reveal...there are many twists and turns along the way of life. Dawn, a girl who finds herself torn between what she once thought as truth, and what she now knows as truth, is shown that life isn't always what you believe it to be. There is a slow start to this book, which makes one sort of believe that nothing too bad will happen. However, when it comes to it, we learn there are many secrets in the Cutler family, and Dawn is just one of them. To write much more would spoil everything entirely. I would personally recommend this book to a teenage girl trying to discover who she really is. Also, I would recommend this book, and the entire series to anyone willing to get a taste of what lies and deceit are in a family.

4 out of 5 stars An Obvious Rehash But A Good One.......2006-04-15

To say that VC Andrews has become formulaic would be a major understatement. A ridiculously gorgeous 12-14 year old girl with "flaxen blond hair" and "cerulean blue eyes" has her life radically altered when she discovers she's a member of a wealthy socialite Virginian family. However the family is more psychotic than-well no other family in the history of literature is even on the same level of insanity that exists in VC Andrews. The psycho family delights in tormenting the heroine whom ends up sleeping with her older teenage brother.

`Dawn' is no exception. Here the formula is applied to Dawn Longchamp. The Longchamps are dirt poor Virginians. Poor, but pleasant and as happy as poor family can be. A series of unfortunate events tare the family apart and Dawn is sent to live with her "real" family she never knew existed, the Cutlers whom make Dawn's life a living hell. Though nothing as extreme as being tortured in an attic, Dawn mostly endures humiliations.

A very obvious rehash of `Flowers in the Attic'. In fact there's even a psycho grandmother and an attic. Dawn is also locked in one room of their giant mansion. Grandmother Cutler also wishes to erase the mere existence and memory of Dawn's previous family.

As for the only reason you read VC Andrews, the incest, there's plenty of it. Yes you won't be bored with `Dawn'. Her brothers aren't. The twist here is, who is Dawn's true soul mate? Jimmy, the brother she grew up with? Or her biological brother Philip?

I was able to forgive the fact that `Dawn' is VERY obviously a rehash of `Flowers in the Attic.' It doesn't even pretend to be anything else. With a heavy amount of incest it gives the audience what it wants. I can't blame VC Andrew's ghostwriter for using what works.

My only and big objection to `Dawn' is that it is VERY predictable. By page 150 I had accurately predicted the rest of the book. I was bored with waiting for the characters to catch up.

If we're not going to attempt a suspenseful plot then why slow down the book with one? A lot of time and space is wasted. Just cut to the chase. Or in this case the incest.

5 out of 5 stars another great vc andrews .......2006-04-10

I loved this book. I love Dawn's character (more that Heaven from the Casteel series), and the way she strives for what she deserves and needs.

In this book Dawn dreams of having everything she needs to reach her dream of being a great singer and for her and her family to finally settle down in one place. Then finally her father lands a job as a janitor in a private school, and things start to look up with her singing career, plus a new love interest (Philip). But after her mom has the baby (Fern) she becomes sick, and ends up passing away. Then they reveal that Dawn will actually be taken to a different household and shouldn't have even been with this family in the first place. (read the book to find out why) But when Dawn comes to her new home she realizes that she wasn't really even wanted back. Soon everything is once again against. This is the story of how she overcomes it. A definent must read if you like vc andrews books, or if you just need a good book.

      3 out of 5 stars Dollanganger + Casteel/Audrina = Cutler.......2005-12-31

I have read all of the Dollanganger (Flowers in the Attic) books, and those are, hands down, the best series/books that are actually written by VC Andrews herself. I read reviews about Dawn, and was hesitant to read it because I know it is by the ghostwriter. When I first started reading the book, I was turned off by characters/setting sounding too similar to previous, original VC Andrews books. The character, Dawn, was too much like Cathy and Heaven from previous series.

This book grew on me, but I was still very turned off when I would read a line of description that was almost word for word from previous books. For example, of course, Dawn's incestuous brother has "flaxen blond hair and cerulean blue eyes"... and the grandma has "icy" or "gray steel eyes" and hair that is pulled so tightly... these are all exact rip-offs from Flowers in the attic. How could a writer, even if he is writing under someone else's name, not have been more creative than that?? Then, the characters in general are mostly the same as other characters in previous books. There is a harsh, mean grandmother, an air-headed, self absorbed young mother, incestuous brothers (all Flowers in the Attic), a rotten conniving "replacement" sister (My Sweet Audrina) and Dawn's poor family (Heaven).

Even a lot of the plot takes from other Andrews books. The kids being at a rich private school is from Petals on the Wind where Carrie goes to one similar and similar things happen to her. Also, the "brother" Jimmy and her sister Fern being separated from her and sent away to other homes is just like what happens in Heaven, with those children. Also, in Dawn, she ends up going to New York to pursue her dreams of becoming a singer, exactly how Cathy goes to NY to become a dancer...some of the similarities are a shame. I could go on and on.

I will admit that I thought the story was overall interesting and I read the book easily in two days. I might continue with the rest of this family series, but I wish this ghostwriter had more fresh ideas and didn't rip-off other successful, magical VC Andrews originals.

      3 out of 5 stars Brain heroin.......2005-09-15

Before there was trash TV, when Jerry Springer was just the mayor of Cincinnati, there were the VC Andrews books. I seem to remember these books being introduced sometime during junior high school, but this was the first one I picked up and read cover to cover.

Following the same format as the previous series and the ones to follow, this is the story of a backwoods country gal (in this case named Dawn) struggling with her hillbilly family to be introduced by scholarship fate to a highbrow school and slice of society. Feeling outcast and ashamed of her sharecropper roots, Dawn discovers by a bizarre twist of fate that she is in fact not related to the people she thought were her immediate family and is in fact the long lost daughter of a wealthy, old money family.

      But wait, there's more!

In yet another sickening twist, the most popular girl in school who had asserted herself as her arch nemesis is her sister. And the most popular boy in school, Philip, who she had already had a sticky, awkward encounter in the backseat of his sports car with is actually her brother. *Shudder*

      But wait, there's STILL more!

Dawn is shuttled from her clapboard shack to her new family's spacious estate to meet her real mother (some kind of skittish, over medicated bird in a golden cage) and adjust to her new surroundings. The whole time, the suave popular boy / brother Philip has not been able to put aside his lust for this tasty morsel he just happens to be related to and continues to try to get into her pants. And Dawn herself, now free of the ties that bind, has her love for Jimmy, the boy she thought was her brother until recently, grow into full blown passion.

Oy Vay ... It's hard to put down a juicy, trashy story like this for even five minutes. Something like this speaks to a sordid part of us. Like all these books, it has just enough deconstruction of social classes, high school clique mentality, and primative instincts to appeal to everyone. The topic of incest is something so hideous and horrifying, yet we can't stop reading about them because they are just so hideous and horrifying. Perhaps Andrews was trying to tell us something about our society in this. Traditionally we've always thought incest was something that happened among uneducated, backwoods people (like where Dawn came from); but, in recent years, we have learned that these things happen among everyone from the middle class on up and it happens much more often than we think it does (like where Dawn went to). Some are true victims (such as when Philip gives into his wants and finally rapes Dawn), and some are just simply something else (Dawn and Jimmy). It's creepy and twisted, but it happens.

Enjoy this book (and all other titles by the same author) for some trashy entertainment. It's not a great literary work as it's aimed for the teen set, but gives us something to think about afterwards.

The need for an inspiring account of the bone marrow transplant process is great! Analisa’s incredible story will leave many to consider the value of spiritual strength as a means for facing life’s unpredictable challenges. “While myriad books treat survival from a medical standpoint, 11th Hour Miracles! does so from a unique viewpoint involving religious faith,” says New York Times best-selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh, “…an approach that sets her account far apart from similar ones.” “It is a moving experience that will help others understand what we transplant doctors see every day, namely the extraordinary strength of the human spirit.” -- Stephen D. Nimer, M.D. Analisa’s amazing story includes the miraculous blood match of her missionary brother living 3,000 miles away in Peru, the tremendous setbacks she undergoes, and the triumphs that finally lead to a full and complete recovery. She reveals how love, faith and the medical staff at UCLA really do bring about 11th hour miracles!

        5 out of 5 stars A journey toward tomorrow........2007-05-31

Analisa is a woman of remarkable determination, faith and strength. I first met Analisa when she and Brian moved to our area shortly after completing her transplant and we worked together for several years in our church. My greatest joy was watching her regain strength followed by her and Brian receiving their two baby boys into their family. It has been a difficult journey for Analisa, but if you knew her, you would understand how and why she survived, as she is "tiny but mighty". This book is a great narrative and would be an inspiration to anyone who must undergo a bonemarrow transplant or any other difficult medical procedure. Where there is faith there is hope--and miracles. Well written and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration at its Best.......2007-05-13

Analisa is a modern day hero with her strength and faith inspiring all of us to conquer our personal trials and heartaches in life. Her story and determination will always be a guide and inspiration to me throughout my life. Thank you Analisa!!

        5 out of 5 stars Compelling.......2007-05-02

Anna's account of her ordeal is uniquely her own. Her account is pitch perfect-- an honest and uniquely personal telling of her grueling struggle both to live and to reclaim her life. She is everyman, or woman as the case might be, tempored in the crucible of personal struggle against overwhelming seemingly incontestable circumstance.

I must tell you that I know Anna and Brian personally, I know about her struggle with cancer and her effort to write about it. I often wondered if the world needed one more survivor book. If so, this is that book. You won't need to know them going in because you'll soon get to know them through their own eyes and in your own heart. You'll know yourself a little better too. Just be prepared to read for a while because once you start, you won't put it down. Paul Nielsen

5 out of 5 stars Touching and Inspiring!.......2007-04-18

This book is one of a kind! As amazing as it is riveting, the story Analisa tells of her journey through her bone marrow transplant will leave you breathless and unable to put it down. More thrilling and devastating than fiction ever can be, this autobiography will remind you of the many blessings you have in your life!

5 out of 5 stars Wise and Wonderful!.......2007-04-18

This book is filled with wise and wonderful words. Not only does it contain practical advice and guidance on how to survive a life-threatening illness, it also shows how relying on your spiritual faith can give you strength and help you heal. The author teaches us the importance of family and friends, and how their love and support is so vital in the healing process. This is a personal story that will provide the reader with great hope and comfort in facing adversity. It is a sensitive and powerful story that will inspire others who may be facing a similar challenge.

V.C. Andrews was not a good writer. period. I guess the books are great if you like reading the same poorly written story about kids and incest over and over. I'll admit, reading about sick stuff can be entertaining. I would suggest a true crime book about a serial killer. The writing is usually better and the content far more interesting.

Come on now, how many good writers would have new "ghost-written" books published in their name long after they are dead? Answer: Zero.

3 out of 5 stars It was ok........2004-12-25

Not the best out of her series. I really couldn't stand the fact that they were treating Jefferson like he was five instead of nine. A nine year old is capable of dressing and bathing himself. Actually, most kids I know at that age are beginning to get modest. But in this story they carry him around and dress him like he is five.
I also wish they would cut out on the rape stuff. Philip was one of my favourite characters and than they had to go and make him rape Christie.

4 out of 5 stars The saga continues.......2004-08-16

This book was probably my least favorite in the Dawn Cutler series, however it was still decent.

It was fun to see Dawn's daughter go back to the places Dawn visited, meet the people she met- to see what had happened since. It was also fun to see "new" characters take on the evil role. However, something just didn't click for me in this book as it did in the others. Maybe it was just that Dawn wasn't present for most of the book.

I'd recommend this series though as a whole if you enjoy VC Andrews or if you enjoy books of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorites.......2004-04-28

i have to say ive read the cutler seris the doll seris and now im reading the casteel seris the cutler seris is my favorite so far and this book is my favorite by far but isnt it kind of preverted that christie makes out with her step uncle? i mean that isnt as bad as philip and dawn but still well im not going to be one of the those reviewers who tells you everything because then it ruins the book. i think whoever writes these since V.C Andrews is dead shouldnt just stop a seris like that i want to know what happens with christie and gavin and if things get better for christie and jefferson at home same thing with the doll seris but thats for another reveiw

        3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars..........2003-07-04

I was not happy that this book killed off Dawn and Jimmy so fast. Made the book a little more difficult to get into. FITA and the Heaven series 4th books were more engaging that this one. I love the Cutler series, but I didn't really enjoy it as much from Christie's perspective as I enjoyed Bart's in FITA. this book was good, but definitely not my favorite. I'm glad I read it since it is part of the series.

        Book Description

Growing up on the thriving plantation called The Meadows, Lillian Booth cherishes the brightest, happiest dreams....

Lillian's world is full of grand parties, of sunshine and promises, as thrilling as the fairy tales Mama spins for her and her little sister, Eugenia. No one, not even her cold, stern Papa and her Bible spouting sister Emily, can crush her spirits -- until the day Emily reveals the shattering secret at Lillian's birth, a secret Mama sadly cannot deny. Still Lillian refuses to believe Emily's hateful claim that she is evil, a curse...even when sweet, gentle Eugenia loses her fragile hold on life, and Mama retreats further into her fantasies. But when tragedy befalls her best friend, the one boy whose tender heart mirrors her own, Lillian comes to believe Emily's grim words. Meekly, she endures her penance, finding a strange solace in the endless repetition of prayers in a room stripped of all comforts. Lillian's heart is torn anew when, in a drunken haze, Papa subjects her to the most brutal degradation. Then Papa loses The Meadows in a card game, and Lillian is faced with a new and terrifying prospect. Arrogant, handsome playboy Bill Cutler will return the plantation -- if Lillian will marry him! Now Lillian must leave her girlhood home behind, and make a bold new beginning as the mistress of a hotel called Cutler's Cove...

3 out of 5 stars It was okay when I was fourteen, but..........2005-08-07

then I grew up and dug out my Andrews books after they'd been sitting in my closet for a time. I reread this morbid tale one night as I tried to fall asleep. At first it entertained me. But having parted ways with these stories for years, I realized that it was the same spark that got people to read books like Mommie Dearest or Flowers in the Attic. People love to be shocked. And this is a book with nothing but horrible things befalling our 'beautiful' heroine with no bright light ahead of her. It seems that all of the good guys in VCA books are beautiful and most of the bad guys are ugly. And did I mention the rape scenes were absolutely disgusting?

        I rest my case...

        4 out of 5 stars an idea.......2005-06-20

I would love to read a story written from Charlotte's point of view. Sure, Darkest Hour was prteey good, but it does not explain why Charlotte was afraid of Lillian. Maybe the Cutler series needs her to tell her story, about how Emily treated her.

3 out of 5 stars sad story of a lovely lady.......2005-05-09

Darkes Hour, was the first novel I read in the Cutler series. I decided to read this book, since the fifth book is usually the PREQUEL. Lillian grew up in a privelaged home with a big house and magnolias everywhere. Yet she still has to deal with her adultering uncle/dad (who rapes her), her spineless mom and evil sister/cousin Emily. She becomes a total victim and prisoner in her home.

Then at 16, she is betted off to womanizer Bill Cutler, and becomes the matron of Cutler's Cove. She falls in love with the hotel, and becomes a big success.

I thought Lillian was going to be a kind and loving grandmother in the first novel, Dawn. However she ends up being Grandmother Cutler, a cold frigid bitch who make Dawn miserable.

        4 out of 5 stars An Evil Granny's Story.......2005-05-08

Well, here we come to the last book about the Cutlers, and it's told by the evil granny. Who, as is the tradition in V.C. Andrews books, was not quite so evil in her youth, so she has a right to narrate a story.
Actually, this is a little weird. If you've read the previous books in this series, you'll probably know that the evil granny (or Lilian, as she is called here), isn't actually related to Dawn or Christie. Or is she? Because this is the prequel, and we've already found out a lot of shocking secrets about who's related to who in the last four books. Is it possible that there could be one last, horrible secret that would change the way the readers look at, say, Dawn and Jimmy's marriage? Well?
As it turns out, no. The only horrible secret revealed that wasn't mentioned in the other books is something to do with Lilian's parentage. Which doesn't really impact on anything that happened in the other books. Erm.
But there's always an advantage to these "narrated by the evil granny" books, and that is the fact that they're set in the past, so there's an excuse for the prudery and daffyness. It would sound a bit strange for a modern-day mother to tell her daughter that only "loose women" like to show off their cleavage, but in a 1930s (I'm guessing) mother, it makes sense. As do the swoony-true love-fairy tale parts. They should set these books in the past more often- they're better at it.
Finally, there's the part where poor old Lilian's sickly mother and sister, pervy father, religious fundamentalist sister and not-particularly-agile boyfriend set up a series of events that ruins her life. And I can't think of a better author when it comes to writing melodramatic life ruination. It's when these books get dark, gruesome and miserable that they're at their cheesy best.

4 out of 5 stars Good vs. Evil.......2004-08-20

This is another great VC Andrews book where basically good vs. evil. However, in this book, it didn't seem that good won out. We did however get a good look into the life of grandmother Culter who we met in the first two Cutler novels and get some back ground on her life. Why she became who she was...

It was a very good read, giving us readers a chance to actually get to like grandmother Cutler- who we all hated previously. There are moments in this novel that are so horrifying, you will be shocked. The whole time I was reading, I just wanted to get to the end and reach the conclusion I was waiting for.

Overall I enjoyed the Cutler series. I'd recommend it to teenagers and adults alike, if you like a good juicy, fun read.
