Book Description
His mother is not his mother. His father is not his father. But if Jack hadn’t broken the high school rushing record that night, he never would have known and nothing would have changed. He’d just be going out for pizza, playing football, trying yet again to score with his girlfriend, P.J. But he did break the record. He appeared on the news. And now they’ve found him. Jack plunges into a space-time–bending game of survival with no way out. The rules are shrouded in secrets. But one thing he learns fast: Trust no one. After centuries of abuse, the earth is dying, and it’s up to Jack to reverse the decline before the Turning Point, when nothing will ever be the same again. Beaten into shape by a ninja babe and a huge telepathic man’s best friend, Jack hurtles across the ocean to save the future from the present and to solve the mystery of his purpose. Exactly who, or what, is Firestorm, and what does it have to do with Jack? And what comes next when everything you have ever known turns out to be wrong?
In the first book of the Caretaker Trilogy, readers are taken on an electrifying, fast-paced adventure of hunting truth, all in the name of staying alive.

Pollution wake-up call.......2007-06-25
This is a great book for everyone, but I'd have to recommend it to young adults and up because there are some suggestive parts. I really commend Klass for his trasition of the normal, everyday sort of guy who plays on the football teams, has a girlfriend, etc. into the futuristic hero with a destiny to save the world. Jack is the everyday superhero, a likeable, imperfect and average sort of character who relates to the reader. His grammar may be horrendous, especially with his fragment sentences, but his vocabulary is enormous and had me reaching for a dictionary at times! Even though I generally dislike the modern-journalism style of the flawed narrative with misspelled words (I had trouble in Flowers for Algernon not taking a red pen to the page!) and fragmented sentences, when Jack did it, it hardly bothered me because it just made Jack more human and likeable as a clueless high school student ripped from everything he considered normal and thrown onto the track of his destiny without any briefing or prior knowledge.
In addition to action and fantasy and a bit of science-fiction, this book also comments on pollution and man's waste of the environment. The bittersweet nature scenes and Eko's tales of the lack thereof in the future made me realize that despite the fantastical fiction story held within these pages, there is also the truth. The truth that humans are destroying this earth without a care for the future. Therefore, I recommend to everyone because it's really worth the read.
A new kind of superhero!.......2007-06-14
I just finished "Firestorm: Book 1 of the Caretaker Trilogy" by David Klass and have a lot to say about it. It was like reading a movie (not a script, but an actual movie), but in a good way. If this book is not made into a movie I will eat my shorts. It has action from the beginning to the end, there are no lagging parts. It seems like a cross between Superman, Men in Black & Wizard of Oz, yet oddly its own unique story with messages about taking care of Earth before it is too late, but does not do it in a preachy way.
Jack, the all-American senior running back discovers that his entire existence has been a cover up for who or what he really is. He looses his family and everything he knows and discovers new friends in a large telepathic dog and hot shape shifting ninja girl. His new friends are willing to give up their lives if necessary to protect him because he is "the beacon of hope", to save the world.
The sentence structure was a bit distracting at first. I found it a bit annoying to read until I got used to it and found the poetic flow and rhythm of the writing. It was quit clever to write in poetic style yet in a paragraph narrative format. This would be a great book for teaching on many levels both the content and the writing form.
The way the story ends leaves you hanging (even though it wraps up) and waiting anxiously for the next installment. I will definitely purchase the rest of the series.
Kids Love It.......2007-04-09
I bought this for a girl who doesn't read as often as she should and she couldn't put it down. She has already asked me about the next book in the trilogy.
Firestorm may not be appropriate for middle school........2007-03-28
Just a "heads-up" for middle school folks who select books. The main character is in a car with his girlfriend & tries to convince her that "this is the night." The girlfriend says "you want me to spread my legs like football goalposts? Is that it?" "Put it away. Back in your pants." "Put that sucker away and let's go home. There'll be lots of better times. I promise. Soon." "Have you every heard of blue balls? It's a medical condition. Can be terminal."
This is a great story! Consider it for high school kids. But if you live in a community that is a bit conservative, Firestorm is best selected for the high school level.
Excellent!.......2007-03-05
Firestorm is a terrific, fast-paced, suspenseful, intelligent and humorous book! I highly recommend it.

Revue Sketches.......2006-07-12
I saw the Revue Sketches animated with the original dialogue on PBS in the late 60's. 'Trouble in the Works', a dialogue between the owner and head foreman in a machine parts factory, was hilarios with a lot of punning on the names of the parts. 'Last to Go' was also a funny and poignant sketch about a minimal conversation between a corner newspaper seller and customer about which London daily is the last one sold. The other plays I'm not familiar with.

Customer Reviews:
Don't read this until you've seen the TV episode........2006-03-03
This is just a novel form of the TV script. Unless you're really hooked on this story, move on to the Voyager books that are original.
Lots of details the TV pilot didn't have.......2004-02-01
After watching the pilot on televison, I saw this book a the grocery store. I wasn't a big trek fan, but Kate Mulgrew's "Girl Power" attitude hooked me to Voyager.
I read this book in a few days. There were a lot of details that I'd missed the first time I saw the show and lots of details that weren't even in the pilot.
I liked how it described in more detail how the crews attempt to mesh so they can use their combined resources to get home.
The 8 page photo insert would have been a lot better if it was in color, but it was a neat feature anyway.
ST Voyager #1 Caretaker - An exciting beginning!.......2003-11-01
Surprisingly enough, out of all of the Star Trek novels written by the LA Graf (Let's All Get Rich and Famous) writing team of Julia Ecklar and Karen Rose Cercone, this was the first one of theirs that I'd read. I found their writing style for this novelization of Voyager's lead off episode to be very well written and fast paced, easily accomplishing what novelizations are for. They deftly added several "between the scenes" scenes that weren't scene on screen and enhanced those scenes we did see with some very interesting personal dialogue.
The cover art for this novelization is nothing spectacular but it does serve well in what it was designed to do, give the fans a photo of the new and exciting crew!
As is custom with novelizations of Star Trek movies and pilot episodes, there is an eight page set of black & white photos included.
The premise:
The newly commissioned Intrepid class USS Voyager NCC-74656, commanded by Captain Kathryn Janeway sets out on the mission to find a particular band of Maquis in the badlands. Here is where the novelization goes above and beyond the episode; the novelization begins with an excellent introspective opening sequence with Chakotay, a Maquis leader.
Voyager arrives at Deep Space Nine to pick up some additional crew members and then she heads out for the badlands with her crew to find the Maquis. Unbeknownst to them, an entity known as the Caretaker has spirited the Maquis raider some seventy thousand light years away, deep in the Delta Quadrant and they're heading for that same destiny.
Captain Janeway and her crew find themselves in the same situation; deep in the Delta Quadrant, several crew members dead or missing and those left alive being held captive by the Caretaker. In true Janeway fashion, she soon learns what must be done and has to make the ultimate decision that will leave her crew and the remaining crew of the Maquis raider stranded in the Delta Quadrant, looking at seventy years at maximum warp to get home to the Alpha Quadrant and the Federation.
Thus begins the wonderful seven year journey, where at many times, the series didn't quite live up to the expectations of many Star Trek fans but it was still some very decent Star Trek and a journey that I enjoyed watching.
I highly recommend this novel to those that can find a copy of it. It serves well as a beginning to the series of novels for Star Trek fiction readers! While several of the early Star Trek Voyager stories couldn't exactly be classified as "classics," it's worth it to read through them and this is the best place to start. {ssintrepid}
Excellent novelization........2002-11-15
This book captures the events in the premier episode of the television series, "Star Trek: Voyager" quite well, yet one never has the feeling that one is reading a recap. The story flows quite well, the characterizations are excellent, and I can't think of any scenes from the episode that are left out of the book, yet there are many instances in which the book adds to the story, and none of them seem out of place.
The only objection I have is the treatment of the holographic doctor; he is portrayed much too mechanically. I realize that he IS mechanical, but the series never failed to present him as having a personality, even in this premier episode. I feel that his mechanical aspect was overplayed in this book. Otherwise, this is an excellent telling of an excellent story, and necessary background for anyone planning on reading other "Voyager" novels.
Great novelization.......2001-08-15
This novelization of the first episode of Voyager is really well done. It's not just a rehash of the episode, rather, it's a story that can stand on its own. It's nice hearing what characters are thinking, and it's very descriptive. The photos in the middle were a nice touch. I really enjoyed all the interweaving storylines and the introduction of all the characters. Excellent!

Book Description
Jacket description.back: In all of Pinter's plays, seemingly ordinary events become charged with profound, if elusive, meaning, haunting pathos, and wild comedy. In The Caretaker, a tramp finds lodging in the derelict house of two brothers; in The Dumbwaiter, a pair of gunmen wait for the kill in a decayed lodging house. Harold Pinter gradually exposes the inner strains and fear of his characters, alternating hilarity and character to create and almost unbearable edge of tension.
Customer Reviews:
You get a bit out of your depth sometimes, don't you?.......2005-01-07
One review, until now, is pathetic. This book, featuring two of the absurd, menacing, weighty master's early works is terrific.
The Caretaker, along with The Homecoming, The Birthday Party and Old Times is one of Pinter's best, ultimately important, works. It is in my opinion one of the great post-WWII English plays.
The Dumb Waiter, similar to The Caretaker in it's setting and brother-like characters, while being a long one-act, is creepier still and more enigmatic.
The Caretaker is about a vagabond named Davies, who is taken into a run-down room in a run-down house by Aston, who lives there, and collects things in it, and is the brother of Mick, who owns the building. Initially the relationship between Davies and Aston is kind, generous and progressive. Davies, used to trudging through life homeless is taken aback at the trust and goodwill offered by Aston. When Mick arrives later, Davies must feel out the differing attitude, as Mick looks after his brother, and isn't so easily trusting of the ragged and scruffy Davies. But eventually Aston seems odd (and delivers an amazing monologue testifying to his possible insanity), and Mick more level headed, and both at different times offer Davies a job in the house, as Caretaker.
But Pinter being Pinter, the goodwill is possibly unreal, or something else entirely. There is a vague confusion to the play, a lack of specifics, and the characters, in classic masculine style, only say what they think they need to, i.e.:
Davies: What do you do-? What do you do...when the bucket's full?
Pause.
Aston: Empty it.
Pause.
Davies, somewhat boxed into the house by weather and possibility never knows his place, as the brothers, who rarely are in the room together, keep him off balance. The truth becomes elusive, as do the facts. One never knows one's place, or how each feels about the other. A scary moment comes when Davies, flustered by the erratic behavior of Aston, calls him "nutty" to his brother, Mick. To which Mick replies: "You get a bit out of your depth sometimes, don't you?"
The Dumb Waiter is more absurd then The Caretaker. Two guys, possibly hitmen, possibly waiters, staying in a basement room, awaiting orders to do something, must contend with a dumb waiter that begins to descend with notes requesting food. The room clearly not a kitchen, and they not sure what is going on upstairs, instead put the little food they have in the dumb waiter, which ascends and descends several times. The trapped nature of Gus and Ben lends that Pinter menace to the story. Each has a gun, and seems ready to kill. But a lack of information, either known to them, or expressed by them so we know, keeps the lid on the proverbial pot.
These both are classic plays. I highly recommend this book.
The Caretaker and The Dumb Waiter, 2 wonderful reads!.......2000-05-01
Both of these works are wonderful in the sense of making the reader think. Not only are you thrust head first into the plays, but your perception is what makes the endings. Pinter's stlye, form and intellect deliver in both of the works and are challenging without being difficult. Both works have character that people can relate to, wonderful dialogue, and mental involovement. I highly recommend both works!

Sustaining and Strengthening Stewardship
ASIN: 0814629040 |
Book Description
The message of stewardship invites us to give our time, talent, and treasure in gratitude for our abundant blessings. Fostering grateful caretakers in parishes is an ongoing task that requires vision, courage, and trust. In Grateful Caretakers of God's Many Gifts, the first major revision of Joseph Champlin's ground-breaking sacrificial giving program, Father Champlin continues to encourage the sharing of treasure, time, and talent--transforming parishioners into grateful caretakers of God's many gifts.
Grateful Caretakers of God's Many Gifts provides a theological and biblical basis for stewardship and gives detailed guidance for sharing time, talent, and treasure. It also offers the history, foundational principles, and implementation steps for sacrificial giving, a form of stewardship. The manual likewise provides a wealth of material for sustaining and strengthening grateful caretaking in a parish on a long-term basis. It offers practical suggestions on a number of special issues in stewardship including accountability, annual renewals, customized direct deposit of Sunday offerings, planned giving and parish stewardship councils, and training our youth to share.
Father Champlin shows that the sacrificial giving process effectively supports grateful caretakers of God's gifts: people in the parish willing to share significantly their time, talent, and treasure for the Church and the world. It has been proven in practice, is biblically and theologically sound, actively involves lay persons, touches the hearts of parishioners, is uncomplicated and inexpensive to implement, produces impressive short-term results, and provides long-term possibilities.
Grateful Caretakers of God's Many Gifts builds on Father Champlin's original sacrificial giving publications in both the theory and practice of how to motivate parishioners to become active stewards of their faith. It has on-going value for those concerned about fostering grateful caretaking in a parish.
Chapters include "A Theology of Grateful Sacrificial Giving and Responsible Caretaking," "Biblical Bases for Grateful Caretaking and Sacrificial Giving," "Sharing Time and Talent," "Sharing Treasure," "Evaluating and Introducing Sacrificial Giving," "Communicating the Stewardship Message," "Preaching and Celebrating Grateful Caretaking," "Renewals, Accountability, Training our Youth, Direct Deposit, Planned Giving and Parish Stewardship Councils." Appendix I: "Supportive Materials." Appendix II: "Success Stories."
Includes the following sample documents: Annual Parish Financial Report, Sample Envelope, Sample of Sacrificial Giving Report, and Bills Paid Section Bulletin.

Childhood Favorite.......2007-04-24
This was my oldest son's favorite bedtime story over 25 years ago. He had a vivid imagination, and I would delight in seeing his eyes light up as I would read the story to him. I attempted to repair the cover of our copy with clear contact paper, as it started to fall apart long before he was ready to give it up. It is in my stack of books to pass on to his children someday. This would be a wonderful gift for anyone, and after reading some of the other reviews, perhaps I should dig it out and re-read it myself from a different perspective.
Comfort For Those Who Care For Others.......2005-02-22
This book was a gift to me about ten years ago. It has brought a calming feeling to me when I would come home from work. I have given this book to my staff and other managers where I work. You see I work in an assisted living facility. I am one of the staff that the residents come to when they are frustrated, confused, worried or in need of a sounding board, for comfort, or just a friend. I am the on who is there with the family when their loved one passes. Some days I come home wiped out and drained. Caretakers of Wonder is that little book that gives me a big lift.
Spiritual and Comforting.......2002-07-25
This book was given to our family by friends when my father in law passed away. My children were young and would ask "Where did Grandpa Go?" What a great way to explain to children in a way that they could understand. My kids are grown, the book has been shared with everyone of their friends, including my daughters third grade class. When we see butterflies we say, "That's Grandpa", when we see the stars at night we find grandpa. It has allowed him to live on in everything we see and do. My grown kids are all proud owners of their own copies. I wish they'd reprint, I'd love to have a supply to pass on to others for this same reason. Thank you Eden Cooper. OUR favorite book.
An ode to whimsy and beauty.......2002-04-20
... I discovered the book when I was 50 and have given it to so many folks... The illustrations are whimsical and beautiful and the thoughts remind me to remember the beauty and love I have known in this life. It was especially meaningful as I was one of those folks who denounced love for financial security and when I was visited twice with terminal lymphoma decided love and beauty are more important...I read children's books (once again) for my personal imposed therapy.
The beauty of escapism.......2000-01-28
This book is one of my fondest childhood memories. My mother read it to my sister and i countless times. In fact the book has fallen apart and i am very sad to see that all of the editions are either out of print or out of stock. However if you need a book for a child or one for any age in fact which touches the heart in a delightful way please buy this book. I love it, i read it to my friends, write it in e-mails when someone i know is feeling sad and remember it when i feel like i just can't take it any more.

understanding myself.......2007-05-01
After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.
A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27
For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.
The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.
With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.
Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.
I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25
James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."
His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!
My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23
"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.
I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.
The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.
Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.
To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.
