The book that I've been looking. Now I can say, privately, that I have this book that details the fetishes I have. It has discussed the things I'm familiar, but gave me other insight to other fetishes out there. Proving again that for every fear or idea, there is a fetish for it.
Not quite what I was expecting... but great overall........2005-02-04
I have been wanting this book for quite some time now. I must say, I was rather disappointed when I received it. I picked up the book and I flipped through the pages to get a feel of it. I was shocked to see not one color photograph illustrating the various sexual deviances. However, the book is highly informative. One other gripe I may have about the book is that the chapter on ponyplay is much too long. I would have preferred a shorter chapter on this topic and the introduction of a new topic instead. The chapter on sploshing was great.
Not for the Victorian or the easily upset.......2004-06-10
This is an almost encyclopedia book that attempts to cover some of the non-normative ways in which folks get turned-on and get off. Warning: there are lots of picture here so if you find yourself upset by any of the subject covered, either don't read those chapters or don't buy the book. Gates does an excellent job of letting those with these desires speak for themselves without making many judgemental statements. In nine chapters and 235 pages she covers alot from human ponies to balloons and to fat fetishes or robot lust. A great exploration but perhaps not one most of us would want to read over and over.
Terrific, informative, sexy.......2003-02-07
Think you're odd? Do you like to do "strange" things in bed? Have you ever found yourself fantasizing about something that you know is bizarre? Welcome to the real world, honey, where "deviant" sex is the norm. You may think that your penchant for panties or wish to squish is something no sane person would contemplate but you'd be wrong.
In Deviant Desires, author Katharine Gates goes for the jugular. Leaving the relatively "normal" realms of BDSM (Bondage & Discipline/SadoMasochism), transgenderism, and shrimping behind, the topics explored in Deviant Desires are completely "off the map" in comparison. Ranging from in-depth chapters on Pony Play to Balloon Fetishes with stops along the way about Giantesses, Crushing, and Fat fans, Gates raises the bar with each chapter. Even our old pal Romain Slocombe (see above) makes an appearance with his Broken Dolls photography near the end of the book.
My favorite chapter has to be the "catch all" finale to the book that addresses (among other things) attraction to androids ("My Living Doll" anyone?) and erotic fan fiction. The drawings of popular science fiction characters in compromising positions aren't easy to forget.
Gates is highly respectful of her subjects, neither exploiting them nor psychoanalyzing them. The fun the people have with their fetishes is apparent and rather "normalizing"! While the idea of people enjoying themselves while not indulging in "vanilla sex" may be offensive to some, this book is for the silent, (a)moral majority! (ISBN: 1890451037)
Deviant Desires-Incredibly Strange Sex.......2001-09-19
yawn...i was looking for a little erotic stimulation to spice up my sex life and after perusing this book my boyfriend and I could hardly keep from laughing. It's a book of true fetishes, nothing erotic unless you fall into the small percentage of the population that gets off on, dressing up as a pony, furies, blown-up pictures of women transposed onto fake skyscapes, women over 400 lbs., or having unappetizing food poured over your head and body. I realize that to some folks, the above are exactly the ticket to ecstasy but unfortunately I was mislead by the title and was hoping for a little bondage or dress-up games.

Book III of the Sex Gates Trilogy
The exciting conclusion to The Sex Gates trilogy. The mystery of the sex gates has at last been solved, but a horrible dilemma arises. The masters of the sex gates are gone, but they have left a potential catastrophe behind. All the people who have gone into gates and disappeared will be coming back, including psychopaths, the horribly injured and the very elderly. There is no way to tell in advance what condition they will arrive in, other than that their sex will have been reversed. Lee and Rita find a way to use quantum worlds to avoid disgorging all these people back onto an earth that is finally settling down, but it involves risks that place his and Rita's life on the line. And just to complicate the problem, some of the seconders who are supposed to be helping turn out to have an agenda of their own, one which risks the whole human race!

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Continues on where the first book left off pretty much exactly. Not quite as raunchy, as the discovery phase has been left behind. Some super powered benefactors, government agents, religious nuts, and more of trying to work out weird alien artifacts. Basically, they have found at what is going on, but need to work out what to do.
Good conclusion to the trilogy.......2005-12-15
This trilogy is quite good, exploring the relationship between a person's psyche and his body. Very exciting scenes. NOT for children, there are some pretty steamy scenes in there, too. The third book is short, but good. A very satisfying conclusion to the series, although it could have been longer if the author had wanted to explore what happened to Messler and have a real struggle with the mysterious entity in the quantum world.
Book Description
Masters of the Sex Gates is the highly anticipated sequel to the mindblowing novel, The Sex Gates. Earth is changed forever when the Sex Gates arrive. By passing through a gate, you can change your sex or cure an incurable illness -- but each passage carries a price. What will the ultimate price be? Outside, the demonstrators shouted and shook their fists. Most of them were convinced there was a trick to successfully making successive passages, a trick that we Seconders selfishly kept to ourselves. That made us evil in their eyes. If such a secret did exist, it would be extremely valuable. The wealthy would gladly sacrifice a fortune to gain effective immortality. And to make that immortality fun, you could change your sex whenever you got bored and enjoy swinging both ways. For a Seconder, it was as easy as walking through one of the ubiquitous sex gates. But there was no secret to sell, and nothing we could tell this mob would appease it. Neither Rita nor I had any idea why we could pass through the gates safely while others vanished if they made the attempt.

More of the same, as the trilogy concludes. If you have read the others, you know what to expect, with a bit more of an emphasis on what is going on. The friends and protagonists are mastering their powers, finding out what is going on, and having sex not quite as often, at least on page, anyway.
Good but not as good as sex gates........2006-02-23
This was good but not as good as Sex Gates (5 stars for that one!) It's still an enjoyable fast read. It does seem to get off topic a little about halfway through but get's back on track.
I'm am definitely going to read the sequel.
Series overall is highly recommended.
Truly, the Masters of the Sex Gates.......2003-10-11
Authors Darrell Bain and Jeanine Berry have succeeded admirably in this gripping sequel to their bestselling novel, THE SEX GATES. The mysterious sex gates have changed the world of the not too distand future; destabilizing governments and religions alike, and rocking the fabric of society as never before. Now, people have grown suspicious of "Seconders," individuals like our hero/heroine Jackson Lee (Li) Stuart, who have the ability to go through the sex gates repeatedly without vanishing. You see, the sex gates have the power to cure disease and restore youth, but always change the sex of those who pass through them, and they rarely allow follow-up trips. The Seconders, then, have essentially found the secret to immortality. Repeat passage through the gates also brings out greater intelligence and telepathy in the Seconders. Lee(Li) must discover the secrets of the gates before jealous, hate-fueled mobs fall upon and destroy the Seconders. He/she must chance as many trips as possible to find and contact the mysterious Masters of the gates and win their help, but first he/she must travel hundreds of miles across a world slipping into chaos. The authors, one male, one female, ingeniously sue their own gender differences to provide truly believable viewpoints for their likable and quirky characters. A wonderful blend of sci-fi, sexuality and sociology, makes this book a delight. Enjoy it, I know I did!

Explores possibilities I never thought of before.......2003-09-24
What a great book! I'm an avid science fiction reader and this book is something that I've never really explored before. I love Heinlein and this is very Heinlein-esque. Having both a male and female author gives a very realistic perspective when telling the story from a male or female point of view. Heinlein tried to capture this in "I Will Fear No Evil", but, of course, being male, couldn't really envision what it was like to be a woman. If men & women could experience what it would be like to go through life as a member of the opposite sex, this world would be a very different place. Also, the characters were very well written. They were human, with human foibles and problems, but likeable. They were the kind of people that it would be fun to know.
Book Description

-the trade would cure any and all diseases?

-and sometimes the person simply vanishes during transition?
What would you do? Would you take the chance? Would others?

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
An interesting look at what would happen if the technology to just suddenly change sex appeared. With the added bonus of making you a young adult, again. Unsurprisingly, reasonable amounts of shagging involved, but at its core, it is sf, not sex with some science fiction elements. Not too bad an effort. It follows a group of friends and their survival through the societal upheaval that the introduction of this alien technology causes. Some of them develop super powers, of a sort, as well, and go looking to find out what goes on.
Good Idea, Awful Writing.......2006-11-05
I have read many e-books lately, or at least e-books printed into actual books. Loose ID has been one of my favorite publishers, and so I'm sorry I strayed and read this story. The thing about most e-books is that they are written in the plainest language with a lot of sexual interaction that could not be passed off in regular books, at least not before this, it is becoming more and more likely now. What made other e-books worthy of 4 stars and this one only worthy of 1 is plain and simple... the writing was awful. Written in the same verse as, say, a child's story, it does not excel in anything further than the adult themes. I don't mind the sudden 'dumbing down' of books, but I resent that they feel that we can not hope for something a little more intellectual in our science fiction, erotic or not. These authors had a great idea, it was just too bad that writing it was done overnight as quickly as possible (or so it seems).
Oh, and the amount of errors are redundant and trippable, hard to get into a story where you are wondering where the spell checker was.
Close the gates before it's too late!.......2005-12-13
Don't waste your valuable time on this pathetic attempt at a science fiction novel. It has nothing unique or interesting in it, only rehashed ideas about sexual role reversals and horrid attempts to project future technology. And if that wasn't enough, the writing is just awlful. The only thing I can't understand is why there are 3 follow up stories to this one.
Cross between a cheesy sci-fi novel and a moderate sex novel.......2005-10-02
Overall this is an interesting story.
It is set in a world that is a little more liberal about sex.
Ironically our "hero" is a person who is somewhat of a conservative extremist mentality. The whole poor people are poor by choice or are missing an intelligence gene attitude irritates me.
Even more ironically, it has a lot of interesting ideas of what would happen to society if we could enjoy a return to youth at the cost of a sex change. The direction is very liberal as in the open minded, progressive sense of the word.
There is only a moderate amount of sex in the story. At one point I was wondering when I was going to see sex in this story another reviewer called a cheesy sex story. There is plenty of sex here, but not as much as a cheesy sex story. There is actually a plot.
Overall an interesting story
A view from the other side.......2004-07-20
Sometime in the future, the Sex Gates appear out of nowhere. Don falls through it accidentally, and comes out the other side as Donna. He (er, she) and his friends, and the world, try to come to terms with the repercussions of the sex gates.
A book about gender swapping. Nothing new in science fiction, but this one is done rather well. The biggest surprise for me was how the future was handled. Much science fiction (especially media based sf) has only a handful of advancements. In this near future world everything is advanced. Internet and TV have combined, people carry personal computers (some of which can be implanted), medicine and minor surgery can be accomplished at home with special kits...there's even beard cloths. Wipe face with it and your beard is gone (God, I wish I had one of those). It's nice to see a future world thought out to such detail, instead of just having faster cars.
They managed to cover a lot in terms of switching genders. After Don falls through the gate, they are back at their home drinking. Don almost drops the bottle of booze because it got heavier. Everything seems bigger when he holds them in his hand. He has trouble walking because his hips are so different (he feels like their unhinged). And he is upset because he needs to go to the bathroom but he doesn't know how.
As the title suggests, there is a LOT of sex in this book, almost to the point of being gratuitous. Given the nature of the book, though, it's understandable.
My only real complaint is that the writing is not very crisp. It's slow and plodding in places. It's obvious that this was the authors' first attempt at writing. Once you get past that, though, it turns into a pretty good study on how society might react to being able to switch genders (can only do it once though...well, for the most part anyway). It ends with a lot of questions unanswered, many of which are supposed to be covered by the other books in the series. IMHO, this is worth checking out.

Finally, there's a fun and funky way for today's single women to escape the chaotic and stressful dating scene-the patch! Filled with colorful illustrations, catchy advice, and four sheets of "patches" (stickers in the four patch designs), this entertaining book follows a thirtysomething everywoman down a new dating path. Fed up with the usual singles scene, she's given up on finding Mr. Right, but she doesn't want to abandon all of the feelings associated with relationships. Now, thanks to the revolutionary Stuck on You patch process, she doesn't have to! Each step in the patch program delivers a new level of dating emotions:
Step 1-Anticipation. This fuzzy, pink heart-shaped patch will have single girls giggling, blushing, and waiting by the phone.
Step 2-Connection. This shiny, red lightning-shaped patch leads to new lingerie and lots of time in the bedroom.
Step 3-Commitment. This dull olive patch plants women firmly on the couch, wondering why they watch so much TV. And where did their sex drive go?
Step 4-Reentry. This sparkly, blue star-shaped patch will have single girls remembering their relationship searches with renewed eagerness, ready to tackle dating once again!

When you're going through a rough patch, dating-wise. . . .......2005-12-08
Light-hearted fun for the broken-hearted or those who are merely tired of the same ole same ole dating encounter. A really unique concept! A book with never a dull moment!
Great fun...no commitment required.......2005-11-30
I saw the movie "Shopgirl" last week, and I was just thinking:
If Claire Danes' character had read and taken to heart "Stuck on You" then used the appropriate, supplied patches inside the book's back jacket, she and Steve Martin's character could have preempted much of the plotline. One was obviously looking for more in the other than preppy, wealthy and quirky.
As an appreciator of gender communication, relationship preservation and quick, fun, clever reads, this is a winner of a stocking stuffer. If you end up playing "Dirty Santa", it's bound to be the most sought after and most prized claim of the party.
I saw myself in this book!.......2005-11-22
Katie and Tim are really on to something here - after coming out of the Summer of Hell Ex-Con Closet Case Pervert Dates, this book helped me begin to slowly heal through some of the worst, most devastating, not to mention most disppointing encouters in my life. I look at the stickers as humorous band-aids that will hold our hearts, minds and souls together until we are whole enough to find someone that is our true equal. Everytime I wear a patch, it serves as a reminder that I am okay, and that I will never have to settle for less than I desire! All the while laughing, and thank heaven I can now because of Katie and Tim BRAVO! (When's the next one coming out?)
Stuck on You: Do-It-Yourself Patches for the Single Girl.......2005-07-08
I saw the book, and the artwork caught my eye. I perused it, I bought it, I read it. I thought it was so good, funny and original and witty. I thought well now i will take a break and date myself for awhile and see how I feel. I put on the reentry patch and I was good to go. Now go buy the book and have fun. Joanne Resnick

A witty take on the whole dating scene. Patches aren't just for the nicotine addicted anymore! Now we can rid ourselves of the biggest addiction of all - men! A cute gift for a friend in frustration or to share during a girls night in! And it comes with the patches so you don't need to buy anything else! :)

A Challenging work.......2002-03-31
Instinctively, most decent people don't like to see anyone singled out and denigrated unfairly. To most, it seems particularly distasteful if the denigration is on the basis of race, gender or (to many, at least) sexual orientation. Yet the authors of this book, all of whom are active in campaigns for equality as well as for civil liberties, see codes on US campuses which prohibit and punish such speech as a threat.... Why?
Their book examines the arguments for and against such codes and the issues that underlie them. Objections to these codes include that :
They are a threat to basic free speech principles. In particular the idea that speech should be protected regardless of its content or viewpoint -- a principle intended to prevent the law from favouring one interest over another.
They have a chilling effect on wider discourse. Nadine Strossen points out that : Regardless of how carefully these rules are drafted, they inevitably are vague and unavoidably invest officials with substantial discretion in the enforcement process; thus, such regulations exert a chilling effect on speech beyond their literal bands. (1)
They put us on a "slippery slope". Ideas not originally intended to be the subject of the codes will be penalised. Throughout the book examples are given of this happening. Strossen points out that in Britain the "No Platform for racists and fascists" was extended to cover Zionism (whereby its victims included the Israeli ambassador to the UK). (2) In Canada the victims of restrictions of free expression have included the black feminist scholar Bell Hooks, and a gay & lesbian bookshop in Toronto. (3)
Much the same issue was raised from the floor of an LM sponsored conference in London at which one of the authors (Nadine Strossen) spoke; it was pointed out that the UK Public Order Act of 1936, which was ostensibly introduced to control the followers of British Fascist leader Oswald Mosley, had been invoked time and time again to ban demonstrations by leftists and trade unionists. Similarly, police tactics used against the National Front in the 1980s to prevent their coaches from reaching demonstrations were later employed against striking miners.
The book's authors note that the codes give power to institutions and government. Can we trust them with these new powers? As David Coles, a law professor at Georgetown University, wrote :
...in a democratic society the only speech government is likely to succeed in regulating will be that of the politically marginalised. If an idea is sufficiently popular, a representative government will lack the political wherewithal to supress it, irrespective of the First Amendment. But if an idea is unpopular, the only thing that may protect it from the majority is a strong constitutional norm of content neutrality. (4)
Donald E. Lively questions how new powers will be exercised :
Reliance upon a community to enact and enforce protective regulation when the dominant culture itself has evidenced insensitivity toward the harm for which sanction is sought does not seem well placed. A mentality that trivialises incidents such as those Lawrence relates is likely to house the attitudes that historically have inspired the turning of racially significant legislation against minorities. (5)
But perhaps Ira Glasser puts it best in her introduction to the book :
First, the attempt by minorities of any kind -- racial, political, religious, sexual -- to pass legal restrictions on speech creates a self-constructed trap. It is a trap because politically once you have such restrictions in place the most important questions to ask are: Who is going to enforce them? Who is going to interpret what they mean? Who is going to decide whom to target?
The answer is : those in power. (6)
Another condemnation is that the codes are an exercise in self-indulgency, a trivialisation of real racial imperatives by the pursuit of relatively marginal and debatable concerns....
Donald E. Lively states :
As a method for progress, however, protocolism (1) seriously misreads history and disregards evolving social and economic conditions, (2) is an exercise in manipulating and avoiding racial reality; and (3) represents a serious misallocation of scarce reformist resources. (7)
Speaking of Race, Speaking of Sex doesn't just put the arguments against speech codes -- it also deconstructs the arguments put in their favour. The three most interesting arguments in favour of such codes are, in my view, (1) that racist expression is not about truth or an attempt to persuade and so is not worthy of protection; (2) that racist declarations are in fact group libels; and (3) that racist expression is akin to an assault.
All three arguments are dismissed by the authors. In the first case, Justice Douglas is approvingly quoted :
(A) function of free speech under our system of government is to invite dispute. It may indeed best serve its high purpose when it induces a condition of unrest, creates dissatisfaction with conditions as they are, or even stirs people to anger. Speech is often provocative and challenging. It may strike at prejudices and preconceptions and have unsettling effects as it presses for acceptance of an idea. This is why freedom of speech, though not absolute is nevertheless protected against censorship or punishment, unless shown likely to produce a clear and present danger of a serious substantive evil that rises far above public inconvenience, annoyance or unrest. There is no room under our Constitution for a more restrictive view. For the alternative would lead to standardisation of ideas either by legislatures, courts, or dominant political or community groups. (8)
The second argument -- that racist, sexist or homophobic statements are group libels -- is likewise dismissed. The authors point out that libel involves the publication of information about someone that is both damaging and false. Apart from the obvious fact that group libel doesn't refer to an individual does it fit the definition? Henry Louis Gates Jr. states that it does not. He points out that racist statements may be right or wrong but cannot in many forms be judged true or false. they are often statements of what the individual thinks should be or an expression of feeling. As Gates points out : You cannot libel someone by saying 'I despise you', which seems to be the essential message of most racial epithets. (9)
The last argument -- that such speech represents an assault or words that wound -- is examined, and also dismissed. The authors accept that words can cause harm. Their concern, however, is that no code can be drawn in such a way as to punish only words which stigmatise and dehumanise. They point out that the most harmful forms of racist language are precisely those that combine insult with advocacy -- those that are in short the most political. (10) Attempts to deny that racist speech has a political content also deny that they are part of a larger mechanism of political subordination.
So, can we combat hatred on grounds of race, gender or sexual preference whilst cherishing and nurturing civil liberties? Can we encourage a diversity of thought as well as of population and lifestyle? The answer given by the authors of this book is an emphatic 'yes'. They don't see equality of opportunity and freedom of expression as being at odds. As such, their ideas are refreshing in contrast to the many who seem to have quite unthinkingly accepted that we must sacrifice our freedom on an altar of (faked) equality...

An Important Link to a Lost Society.......2000-04-23
Jiri Langer's "Nine Gates to the Chasidic Mysteries" is an indispensible collection of stories relating to the European Chasidic communities. This text makes an excellent companion to Martin Buber's book on the Chasidic Tales. While Buber's text focuses on many of the moralistic aspects of Chasidism, Langer's helps to explain the spiritual side of the Chasidim. The tales of this book explain the very intimate relation to the divine that was such a part of the Chasidic experience. The text also explores the very tenuous position of Jews in Europe preceding the Holocaust. Langer's book, collected from his experiences after leaving his home in Prague to live among the rural Chasidic communities, was almost destroyed by the Nazis. However, a few copies were salvaged, and survive as a testament to the remarkable and enduring legacy of the pre-Holocaust Chasidim.
The poorest chasidim living the richest lives with God.......1999-08-05
This lovely book is originaly written for the Prague community of the late 30 ties in order to understand, who are the chasidim, who's population was just in big decline at the time (after WWI). The author, who himself has lived with them for long time, choosed an excelent way of telling all of their stories about the holy rabis in the way they use to do so. But he still remembers that not only chasidim will read it and thus explains nicely what some of the strange words or actions mean and also compares some thoughts to those of Western philosophers. It is just a lovely little book about the richest life with God, lived in the hugest poverty of the medeival ages (but in 1910). It fills one with gray joy and i promise your eyes won't stay dray after the first few pages - but you won't be sad !!

Book Description
THE ORIGINAL SEX GATES NOVEL
This is the Sex Gates novel as originally written by Darrell Bain alone. It has a completely different ending, and it contains one more major character and several more supporting ones. In this original version, all questions are answered and all issues resolved in this one book. It is being published now in response to all the fan mail and interest the trilogy generated?and continues to generate. The Sex Gates has already become a science fiction cult classic and this book should be a significant addition to the sex gates universe.
Author's Note
I wrote The Sex Gates in 1993 at a frenzied pace, completing the first draft in one month flat. In looking over my original novel and the one ten years later which includes Jeanine Berry as a collaborator, I am unable to judge which version I like best. That is for readers to decide. I can only say that going back over the old manuscript helped me recapture most of the original emotion and intensity with which I first got this notion into novel form.
When I revisited The Original Sex Gates, I was reminded of the two versions of Arthur C. Clark's grand stories, Against The Fall Of Night and The City And The Stars. I have been reading both versions over and over for many years and continue to enjoy both of them to this day. I sincerely hope you can do the same with the two different versions of The Sex Gates.
