Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This is one novelisation I did enjoy quite a bit and read more than once. Kotzwinkle did a reasonable job of somehow taking the amazingly ugly but cute at the same time alien and translating that to print, along with the kids.
The D&D scene he threw into the book was fun, as well.
Book from the movie, but better than the movie.......2007-06-01
This book was written from the movie, but I read it in Junior-High well before I saw the movie. What is awesome in this book is that it gives E.T.'s POINT OF VIEW on the whole story. We learn who he really is, why he is here, what he thinks, what he feels, why he does what he does... and to me that was just extremely interesting, to be inside the head of an extra-terrestrial!
Afterwards, seeing the movie was a big disappointment, because it contains none of these deep character developments... I think reading this book truly adds another dimension to the E.T. story, so I recommend it. (But beware: some of the concepts strayed from the movie, so be open to new ideas! For example, in the book, E.T. is not an ignorant baby, but is million-years-old wise).
Okay,but a bit pretentious........2007-03-08
I seem to be different than everyone else.I always seem to like the movie better than the book, unless the writer is skilled and doesn't overexplain or do anything else uneccesary.I thought E.T. was way too cynical and they went off on a tangent with Mary's emotional issues with her husband leaving.Kotzwinkle could have used a better editor...Hell,it'd be better if he didn't write it.I love when a book goes into detail about some things, but it was just too much.I was thinking the whole time,"I get the damn point.I got the damn point when I saw the movie, but the movie didn't go on and on with it."
Also, where is the friendship between E.T. and Elliot?E.T. just seemed cold.He reminded me of these teen to 20 somethings that have just discovered Schopenhauer or some other arrogant philosopher. To put it simply,he seemed like an unlikable know-it-all.
Mr. Kotzwinkle,if you happen to ever read this review,I suggest you read Stephen King's "On Writing" memoir.I know Stephen King has some real bad ideas for stories sometimes, but at least he knows how to write them well.He has some real good tips.
I only say it was okay because I got it from a bargain bin type place and it was short...and I've read worse.
ET Phone Home.......2006-12-15
This book is a scary book. I want people to read it because it is kind of sad. The best part of this story is the fact that the scary thing gets killed. People should read it to find out how this happened. Reading scary books is something I like to do. Buy this book to read and get some information.
ET.......1998-10-19
This book was outstanding in my own mind. There was just not anything that turned me off and made put the book down. Yes, this is science fiction and actually loved it, because the characters were described so well. A person may feel as if they really knew or felt that they may be somewhat alike. I personally do not like science fiction but as much as I enjoyed this, I may just change and widen my reading variety. Considering some fairly difficult words I always stuck with and just tried to understand it. Kotzwinkle has put forth an extraudinary piece of literature and should be recommended for interested readers. To be honest with you this book is not easy and is a little long but in the end I promise that you will be feeling something. This has love, tragedy, and is quite suspensful. It is a wonderful book, and I personally recommend to everyone. joe gainer

A winner of a book........2004-11-20
She died to save humankind from a species that would have destroyed it. She died with an embyronic queen alien growing inside her, knowing it was the only way. So how can Ellen Ripley be alive again now? Decades later, aboard a laboratory ship in Pluto orbit? And what's become of her unwelcome passenger?
I can't believe I read this book through to the last page. Its gore and grossness factor goes far beyond my usual tolerance, which is why I found myself unable to watch the movie on which it's based. But I picked the novelization up anyway because of A.C. Crispin's other work, and she hooked me before I finished the first chapter. Her villians are the kind any reader will love to hiss, her Ripley is the most poignant of heroines, and each of her secondary characters is a memorable individual. Even the aliens themselves gain a certain creepy sympathy in the hands of Crispin and co-author Kathleen O'Malley. Add to this a fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping story line, and you've got a winner of a book. Media tie-in or not, it makes no difference.
An above average novelization, but flawed.......2003-10-14
Most novelizations of films are little more than breathless descriptions of what happened on screen. They had more of a place years ago when people did automatically buy videos or DVDs, and once your favorite film left the cineplex, you might not see it again for years...so the novelization would let you "relive" the film. That's not necessary anymore, so the only function they can have is to fill-in information that might have been left on the cutting room floor.
A.C. Crispin makes a sincere effort with "Alien Resurrection", and it doesn't read too badly. It does fall short of a real novel in it's dramatic structure and characterization. She makes a token attempt to fill in backgrounds, even first names, for characters who in the film often are killed off before we get a chance to know them. (Personally, I think this is a flaw in the movie, as we can't possibly care about the death of a character we have barely been introduced to.)
Since the novelization came out at virtually the same time as the film was released, I am guessing that it had to be written before viewing the finished film and that it is largely based on older versions of the script and maybe rough cuts of the movie. There are numerous deviations from the finished film, none of them cosmically important but if you enjoy certain bits of dialogue -- especially some of the very humorous throw-away lines -- it is disconcerting to see them stated differently or clipped or just dropped entirely.
What I was hoping for WAS that the novelization would fill in some of the critical information gaps in the film -- especially Call's motivation in joining the smuggler crew of the Betty and heading out to the Auriga to destroy the alien breeding experiment. This is confusingly told in the film. If Call is so concerned about the Betty crew, why doesn't she do something to prevent them from ever kidnapping the cryo-sleepers BEFORE they reach the Auriga? Why does she allow all the cryo-sleepers to be impregated and killed? Wouldn't it have been simpler for her to have joined the crew of the Auriga and sabotaged the experiement from within the military? Anyways, I will have to live with the ambivalence (or Joss Whedon's slightly wobbly, undercooked script) because the novelization provides no real answers.
Still, most novelizations I have read are complete and utter dreck and this one definitely is not. I think it's a serious attempt to create a companion piece to the film. I just wish the author had stuck with the details a little more clearly.
The Book vs. The Movie.......2002-03-16
After seeing the movie, I didn't know if I could bring myself to read this book. All those flawed places, complete with a flawed ending, really left a person wanting. Still, the book was a gift and I really do need my Xeno-Xip, so I decided reading it would be for the best. Yes, I read and read and wondered exactly why this was so good and the movie was so bad. The book filled in most of those huge holes that the movie left open, and it made me wish I would have just jumped here instead of burning money at the movies. That couldn't happen, though, and I'm glad the book was there to pick up those poor, sequel-shattered pieces.
The Best of The Best.......2000-09-01
I have to agree with the majority of the people. This is an excellent book.My goodness it tops the movie 100%.To be in the minds of the aliens was chilling.I was so sad when the book ended. It's good to see people enjoying it as much as I did.
Ripley's back - or is she?.......1999-01-26
Talk about making the best of a bad job! This book is definitely - no offence to the scriptwriter, Joss Whedon - an improvement on the screenplay. In the film there are some gaps you could put the Titanic through, but the book fills them in admirably. Alien3, in my opinion, detracted from the sweep of Aliens, but Alien: Resurrection redeems the series somewhat, and the novelisation is an epic in itself. A.C. Crispin and Kathleen O'Malley, I salute you.

Book Description
Three people know the truth.
Three families will be changed forever.
In the last days of World War II, a strange phenomenon saves a doomed Air Force pilot named Russell Keys--and plunges him into torment. In a place called Roswell, New Mexico, a man named Owen Crawford is drawn to a bizarre crash site in the desert, and into a government cover-up. And in a remote Texas town, a lonely woman named Sally Clarke finds a stranger hiding in her barn, and reaches out to touch him…
This epic novel, based on the gripping ten-part SCI FI Channel® miniseries from DreamWorks Television, spans sixty years of American history...as the lives of three people are changed in an instant--and the consequences are played out over three generations of harrowing encounters and unexplained events. While the government lies, and a nation doubts, three families know they have been touched, know that something has been taken from them...something that will change their lives forever.

Very Choppy Storyline, no development of characters.......2007-07-31
I thought this would be a good read since I enjoy reading about UFO's and alien abductions. I did not like the fact that is spanned neary 40 years without development of the characters. In some instances, we jump ahead 10 years and suddenly we have new characters that were not properly introduced. I think this could have been a much better story by adding in some of the details between the years.
I have not seen the series yet, so I cannot make a positive or negative comparison between the series and the book.
OK, but not the best.......2006-12-27
For a quick and amusing (not having to think much) read, this is a good book. But, if you're used to reading Asimov or other deep writers of Sci-Fi, I would recommend you not being "taken" by the story. The plot wasn't all that great. The characters were very shallow. I never saw the series, so I'm not jaded by comparison.
This may not be "THE" Taken book.......2006-05-01
Kind of drives me nuts how copyrights are followed so closely when it comes to consumer items, but when it comes to movies and books there can be many all with the same title. It is especially disturbing when a really informational or cutting edge book is written that maybe some powers that be don't like people to read and then another book by the same title comes out a few years later and gets more money to market the book or movie and then it becomes like a "screen memory" fake for the original book -- with or without the author him or herself intending it that way. "Taken" by Dr. Karla Turner is the "real" Taken book in my opinion, just because it came out years before this one. I have not read this book by Cook or the one by Dr. Turner but am required to give a rating so am giving it a three stars in keeping with all the other reviews here from people who have actually read this particular book (in other words, at the time of my writing this review the current overall rating is 3 stars). Now I am wondering if there might even be a THIRD "Taken" book. Guess I'll have to ask Spielberg. (smile)
Pathetic and disappointing, good book cover though.......2005-11-27
I have to admit I was really disappointed with this book, the series I loved and got on DVD as soon as it came out.
Fortunately for me this book was another thrift shop purchase for under two dollars or I would have seriously thought about going back to the bookstore and demanding a refund.
Considering this book is supposed to reflect a ten part series with LOADS of characters, their lives and times from the 1950s, this book does not even SCRATCH the surface, in fact it stops dead at crucial points which explain everything about why Allie was so important not only to the Aliens but to humanity too.
Another bone of contention for me is the ending in the book; it ends so abruptly, you are left looking at the last page and thinking, "Eh? Isn't there supposed to more?" We all remember how Allie had to leave earth, that she wanted to stay with her parents Lisa and Charlie but humanity was not ready for someone like her and she would be safer with her alien relatives but in the book, we don't EVEN get a taster of this, one minute she is talking to her mom, the next....well there is no next minute, that is my point!
I was so frustrated with this book, and the only reason it is getting two stars is the cover art is really nice and the blurb on the back reads quite well, shame about the rest of the book though.
This book's contents is not worth the paper it is written on, which is a real shame because it could have been a cracking good read given an author who knew what he was doing, obviously Mr Cook didn't know what he was doing and thus spoilt it all for readers across the globe and if there be any aliens out there for them too!
Not bad, but lacks some bite until the end..........2005-05-13
This novelization based on the miniseries is worthy of being read apart from viewing the tv version. The beginning chapters go a little too fast and don't convey quite enough information, however. The final chapters, on the other hand, bring the story to a climax and reasonable conclusion.
I managed to see large portions, but not all, of the tv miniseries a few years ago, so I thought that reading the novel through from start to finish would prepare me better when I obtain the DVD so that I can view the entire series.
All in all, this is a worthy read, although I can't say that I feel that many of the characters were truly developed in quite the depth that they could have been.

Commentary
I usually am one to read relationship/unrealistic novels such as The Outsiders or Catcher in the Rye, but after falling in love with the movie "Aliens" when I was seven I thought reading the book may be fun to. I have to admit, I have read this before, but not since the third grade so picking it up again was not a problem because I had lost all memory of the tale. The thing I like about reading books based on movies is that you get a whole new idea of what each character is feeling when something happens. For instance although Sigourney Weaver is a truly talented actress, when Ripley is trying to get Newt (AKA Rebecca Johnson) to drink the hot chocolate in the movie you don't get the same essence of her emotion towards the child as you do in the novel. I appreciate Alan Dean Foster because he has a tendency to go over what is expected and dive into the depths of a character, making them more distinguishable and easier to get to know. This book is truly one of the only books that makes reading it before or after you see the movie a fun ride. Plus there's a lot of swearing, that's always a plus.
Aliens hasn't gotten this good!.......1999-07-26
Great book! Like the movie is was suspenseful, action packed, and scary. The first book wasn't as good as this one though. The best parts are the end, and the part where Ripley is trapped with the facehuggers, and without weapons!
Good attempt at capturing the movie.......1999-04-28
Aliens is a fantastic movie and is one of my favorites. There is no doubt that it makes a great novel. The story is suspenseful and action-packed, and the marines are some of the best characters I have seen. The only problem would be the toning down of the language in the book.
Decent attempt.......1998-08-10
Decent attempt to capture the brillance of James Cameron's masterpiece. ADF toned it down for young readers and in the most climatic scene in the movie (book), he has Ripley uttering to the Alien Queen, "Get away from her, you!" as opposed to "Get away from her you bitch!". What's the big deal with the b word? They use it in Prime Time TV!
Alan Dean Foster's ALIENS.......1997-12-31
Okay, I would first like to state that I am not a Sci-Fi freak with Leonard Nimoy-like features; If you are (and I'll bet 9 out of 10 of you who are reading this are), please go to the nearest bar (or mall if you still suffer from acne-eruptions) and try to at least TALK to a member of the opposite sex. NOW, with that said, here's my review: It's Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!!!!! (ala Tony the Tiger)

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A strange and radical departure from the previous Alien stories, as
Ripley basically ends up on a planet of pacifist monks. If the Aliens
could spell pacifist they would probably eat the people that came up
with the word, then anyone who made a dictionary with it in. Quite a
few of the smaller, faster variety here.
Are you in prison novels? This is a good one.......1999-09-15
Would you buy the book of the first Alien movie after watching it? Nope, me neither. But with this book things do change. Not because the movie is bad (though it was not; if you think the opposite, it may be time to refine your cinematique taste) but the story is so capturing and well told that you never regret your time and money spent at the bookstore.
It could have done with out killing off Newt, and Hicks........1999-06-19
The book was much better then the movie, but, like in the movie, they should never have killed off Newt or hicks, or Riply for that matter. I didn't understand why they felt the need to put one of those things inside her. in the last movie, she had nightmeres about it happening to her. It was an unjust thing to do to such a strong, surviving charracter. What's worse it only opened the door for Reserection. It was a good movie, but only braught the series down. For it's entertainment value, 3 was great, but it's one movie that I try to avoid watching.
Much better than the movie.......1999-04-28
Alien 3 is a bad movie, and is definitely the worst of the four. But the book is fantastic. It is much more in depth than the movie and easily explains everything that the movie didn't. This book is suspenseful to say the least. You won't be able to help yourself from reading on.
BUY THIS BOOK! IF YOURE A TRUE ALIEN FAN........1998-07-17
I bought this book and I didnt regret it, its the best Alien movie book, its better than resurrection. The alien 3 book has much more to it than the movie, you'll wanna read this book in a day. This book has the most suspense you'll ever read. I recommend this book to anyone who didnt like the alien 3 movie, you'll love the book, its just that good. Buy it!

AVP Alien Vs. Preastor.......2005-06-14
The book was diffrent from the movie.Like how when the movie only had three predtors in it and the book had five, or like how they keep switching from when the predators came to earth every 100 years or every 1,000 years. I was disapointed I thought the booke would have more gory sceans in it but when they did they were very discripitive. I thought the book was overall amazing.
Alien vs Predator.......2005-04-27
A mysterious structure has been detected by via satellite far below the ice in Antarctica at the bottom of the world. A crack team of scientists, drillers, archaeologists and adventurers assembled by a billionaire industrialist, Weyland Industries, has traveled to the Antarctic wastes to make history by exploring what is believed to be a fully preserved pyramid predating those built by early Egyptian and Mexican civilizations.
But once this expedition crew enters, there will be no way out and no hope left for humankind. Because deep within the labyrinth, a terror is stirring, an alien monstrosity more vicious, cunning, evil, and unstoppable than any species in the universe except one: the otherworldly Predators who brought the nightmare to Earth to begin with and who are now returning here to face the beasts once more in the most unholy combat. The battle is about to begin and to the victor will go the planet. Who ever wins we lose.
Gives you a little insight..........2005-03-29
This book is fine by me...to be honest, I kinda prefer it over the original AVP novel(Not that the original wasn't good, I liked it).
I'll admit, there are some dry parts here and there, but it starts to get juicy once you get into it.
The writer doesn't let up on anything, he even adds a few pages that feature just the aliens in it(which you don't find to much in the first AVP novel). The interactions between the characters is well written as well; and the main heroine, Alexa Woods is pretty cool too.
Great book!.......2005-03-14
I thought that this book was great! (But I'm still confused of why the author added 5 predators instead of sticking with the 3 in the movie.) This book really talks about the characters' feelings, thoughts, emotions, and how they felt towards one another. If you're a fan of Alien/Predator, then you should get this book. (This is just my opinion. You may not like it.)
Just as good, but different..........2005-03-08
First off, this is not really a novelization of the final movie, but of the screenplay. For example, the movie had three hunters, the book has five - The first drafts of the film started out with five hunters. Also, the first chapter is set in 2000 BC and the second in 1904, so the book lays more of a foundation for the plot than the movie. Of course a book can get into details and character's thoughts, so it seems a tad more complex. I really enjoyed it, but thought more could have been done with both the Predators and the Aliens.

Excellent book.......2000-08-05
Alan Dean Foster does it again..with his third novelization of an Alien film. Alien 3 is an ok movie, but Foster's tie-in is much better due to the fact that it contains lots more dialogue from the original script(and some improvised obviously) that was cut from the final edit of the movie. I also like this book better than the movie because it features extra and alternate scenes that were in the original Alien 3 script, but deleted before the film was released. Such scenes mainly deal more with prisoner Golic and his obsession with the Alien, an alternare birth of the warrior Alien which I like better, and more character-developing dialogue among Dillon and the other prisoners. Customer Reviews:
An enjoyable piece of farce.......1998-07-15
Brogan and Haldane are invited by Captain Podly to join him and other Creons on an island where they take part in initiation rituals. Based on masonic rituals, some of these are strange. They also have to contend with Jane Castle, who is on the warpath having discovered that these rituals are only open to male Creons. The angle on feminism is rather dated, but it is an enjoyable piece of farce nonetheless.
