Joan and David Peterson have their priorities straight: in Turkey as in most places, it's food that comes first. A dictionary of menus and market foods of Turkey, this book is also a paean to Turkish cuisine. The history and culture involved in kebabs and yogurt is fascinating and the food glossary is a great help. Finally, the recipes are a delightful bonus because it's impossible to take an eating tour of Turkey without wanting to sample the goods again and again without having to fly half way around the world every time you crave sirkeli patlican.
Book Description
Second in the "Eat Smart" series of culinary travel guidebooks, this paean to Turkish cuisine contains a rich historical perspective on food origins and extensive background on regional dishes, including recipes. It mixes information and inspiration to give readers the tools to journey into the culinary soul of their destination. Eat Smart in Turkey will take the guesswork out of choosing from an unfamiliar menu. Its comprehensive guide to Turkey's unique cuisine will give vacation-goers, business travelers and backpackers alike an extra dimension of travel pleasure. If you're going to Turkey, this is one book you must take along!

The best culinary guide to Turkey--period........2004-11-17
The long title of this book does not even say it all. It's undoubtedly the best guide to Turkish cuisine *by far*.
I've written best-selling guidebooks on Turkey for nearly 40 years (first for Frommer's, then for Lonely Planet for 20 years), traveled (and eaten) in Turkey almost every year since 1967, and Peterson's book still taught me lots of new and interesting things about Turkish cuisine. I'm still learning from it.
This was not a contract job done on assignment for a big publisher in a hurry. The authors are obviously heart-and-soul foodies who started publishing their own culinary guides because they couldn't help but do it. It shows.
And they're not gourmands, but gourmets: they are truly fascinated by the subtleties in the art of delighting the palate. To most writers, food is necessary and fun. To the authors of this guide, food is tradition, art, innovation, achievement, delight.
And Turkey is a great place to be a foodie. Once the center of a vast, agriculturally rich empire home to hundreds of peoples and cultures, it developed an elaborate and subtle cuisine based on careful preparation of fresh ingredients. It's the perfect country to travel through with a food guide, and this is the guide to take.
Not much help for Vegetarians.......2000-04-01
I bought this book partly because I know that Turkish food features a lot of meat, and I'll be visiting with my wife who is a vegetarian. Can you believe that a book that is *ALL* about food, does not even mention vegetarianism, nor when they list "handy phrases for restaurants" do they list any phrases that deal with the topic? For that matter, they don't deal with any topic having to deal with food allergies, being on a diet, etc. Essentially this is a book about helping people make smart choices when eating in Turkey, but the only people they want to help are people who will eat anything. I should have saved my money.
No traveler should be without an EAT SMART guide........1999-02-06
The authors have written a series of Eat Smart books that no traveler to foreign countries should be without. Each book covers a separate country--Eat Smart in Turkey, Eat Smart in Brazil, Eat Smart in Indonesia and Eat Smart in Mexico--and is chock full of information that you won't find elsewhere within the covers of one easy-to-carry paperback. Individual chapters cover such topics as the history of the country's cuisine, regional foods, how to shop in the local markets, mail-order sources for suppliers of ingredients, and a collection of recipes for typical dishes found in that country. Especially useful is each book's extensive menu guide, listing menu terms alphabetically in the language of the foreign country, with a description of the dish in English. That section is followed by a chapter titled "Foods & Flavors"--listing the foreign terms for foods, spices, kitchen utensils and cooking techniques, with an English translation/description. These books are well researched, accurate and very informative. Highly recommended. --Sharon Hudgins, editor, Chile Pepper magazine
Don't leave home without this guide........1998-12-22
Like armies, tourists travel on their stomachs, and nowhere are the prospects for culinary delight better than in Turkey. So don't leave home without this compact but very complete guide to what's on the menu, what's in the market, what's on your plate and what you can ask for as you travel. The book starts with a short summary of the history of Turkish cuisine, then embarks on a food-tour of the country's seven regions. There are recipes to cook at home before departure, useful foodie phrases ("Where can I see this being made?"), and an extensive listing of translated menu entries.
Robert Arndt, editor, Aramco World
Pioneering guide to Turkey's cuisine.......1998-12-08
One of the world's best kept travel secrets unfolds in this pioneering guide to the cuisine of Turkey. The Petersons present regional classics and national favorites for the reader to try out at home or by following in the authors' footsteps across Turkey. Stunning photographs, information on history and culture, and a treasury of culinary surprises are enhanced by language tips for navigating menu and market. Culinary delights are at the heart of good friendship and this book offers more than a guide to good eating.

A useful research tool!.......2001-01-05
I remember the dread with which I first faced German genealogical records written or printed in Gothic script. It seemed like a completely alien alphabet. However, with a little practice and the useful examples in this book, you can decipher such records yourself.
This book covers the Gothic alphabet and shows variations of handwritten script for each letter. It then provides handwritten script examples of common genealogical words and their German and English translation. Handwritten symbols and common abbreviations found in Germanic records are also covered.
Sections are devoted to showing side-by-side comparisons of Latin, English, Danish, and handwritten German script for common genealogical terms, occupations & titles, and diseases. There is also a useful timeline. This handy book is spiral-bound.
I have found this book very helpful........1998-06-14
The task of deciphering letters and documents written in the style of the last century can be a dismaying task. Edna Bentz' examples are very helpful to anyone who wants to learn. As she so positively indicates by her title: "If I Can You Can."

Take this book on your next trip to Poland!.......2007-05-01
EAT SMART IN POLAND
Reviwed by Sharon Hudgins, author of The Other Side of Russia: A Slice of Life in Siberia and the Russian Far East
I wish I'd had a copy of Joan and David Peterson's "Eat Smart in Poland" on my trips to Poland in the early 1990s--and maybe on my last trip to Chicago, too (where there's a large Polish community and some good Polish restaurants). Reading this excellent travel guide for food lovers brought back fond memories of the Polish dishes I've eaten from Warsaw to Krakow to the American Midwest. And it made me want to eat my way around Poland again--following the authors' recommendations for "national favorites" and "regional classics" served throughout the country.
Like all the guides in the "Eat Smart" series, this book is well researched, well written, and lives up to its promise of telling you "How to Decipher the Menu, Know the Market Foods, & Embark on a Tasting Adventure." After an explanation of the historical and geographical influences on Polish cooking, the authors provide a description of Polish regional cuisines followed by more than two dozen recipes for classic dishes from appetizers and soups to main dishes and desserts. You'll definitely want to try the recipes for Bigos (Hunters' Stew) and Sernik Przekladany (Layered Cheesecake).
If all those consonants in Polish food names leave you bewildered, just turn to the two sections of the book that translate all those strange-looking terms for you. The Menu Guide is an alphabetical menu translator from Polish into English, from A to Z. The Foods & Flavors Guide is a comprehensive glossary of "foods, spices, kitchen utensils, and cooking terminology in Polish, with English translations," which you can use for shopping in open-air markets and grocery stores. (Don't miss the smoked sheep's-milk cheese from the Tatra Mountains in southern Poland.) You'll definitely want to take this book with you on your next trip to Poland--and maybe your next trip to Chicago, too! Highly recommended!
Great book containing much more than just food recipes.......2005-02-25
This is really an unusual book, the authors share their great knowledge not only about Polish food and dishes, especially the dishes which are unusual outside of Poland. They describe how Polish cuisine developed through history, they explain how to read a menu in the restaurant, how to shop for food.. and all of this information is in a very concise form - also with the dictionary of Polish "food" language, the dictionary of Polish dishes, recipes, beautiful photographs.
I recommend this book for your trip to Poland!
"Must" reading for anyone traveling in Poland........2000-06-05
Eat Smart In Poland is "must" reading for anyone traveling in Poland for business or pleasure. The Peterson's provide the reader with a rich historical perspective on the origins and varieties of Polish food; extensive background on regional dishes, and easy-to-use menu guide to help make "surprise-free" selections from restaurant menus; a comprehensive glossary of foods and flavors; Polish phrases for ordering and buying food; handy shopping tips for outdoor food and spice markets;; and recipes to preview the taste of Poland before departure. The informative and engaging text is wonderfully illustrated throughout with "on location" color photography by the Peterson's, and with black-and-white illustrations by Susie Medaris. Eat Smart In Poland is also highly recommended for ethnic cuisine clubs, and armchair traveler kitchen cookbook collections!

Cutting-edge information for us foodies!.......2006-07-07
People who love combining great food and travel make pilgrimages to Italy's Po Valley, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Hanoi, Singapore, France's Lyon, San Francisco, Charleston, New Orleans and other shrines to fine cooking.
Add Peru to the list.
If you aren't aware that Peru has its very own fusion cuisine -- very approximately like that of New Orleans with a blend of Indian, Spanish and African styles -- plus contributions by Chinese and Japanese settlers, Eat Smart in Peru will open your eyes to yet another fine gourmet destination.
Authors Joan Peterson and Brook Soltvedt are way ahead of the curve in discovering Peruvian cuisine. I was only aware of Peruvian chicken, based on a carryout in my neighborhood that serves this dish, cooked on a rotating spit over charcoal, with a rosemary-based spice shoved under the chicken skin, and a fine salsa verde on the side. Peterson and Soltvedt found a vast variety of other dishes, including curries, desserts and appetizers. A section on recipes includes Aji de Gallina, a chicken stew that I plan to try.
In addition to the recipes, Eat Smart in Peru contains a history of the development of Peru's cuisine, a regional specialties chapter, a glossary of ingredients and menu guide.
Finally, Eat Smart in Peru tells you how to shop in a Peruvian market and how to locate rare ingredients stateside. It's an easy read, with nice illustrations and a logical organization.
By the way, the author has done other "Eat Smart" guides to Brazil, Mexico, India, Turkey, Poland and other destinations.
Intricately Researched Culinary Guide.......2006-05-27
"...picarones, a doughnut-like snack or dessert made from a yeasty pumpkin dough. The rings of dough are formed by hand, deep-fried and served with raw-sugar syrup flavored with orange, aniseed, cinnamon and cloves." ~ pg. 14
The Eat Smart guides are an exploration of cuisine itself and are interesting even if you never reach the desired destination. You can order ingredients online for the recipes featured. There are pictures of delicious cultural favorites, food markets and unique ingredients. Some of the main sections include:
Early History through Pre-Inca Civilizations
The Regions of Peru
Tastes of Peru
Shopping in Peru's Food Markets
Resources
Helpful Phrases
Menu Guide
Food and Flavors Guide
Restaurants
Joan Peterson and Brook Soltvedt also show how various cultures influenced Peru's culinary world and the first part of this book contains a lot of culinary history that may appeal to food writers. Maps and pictures of the food make it easier to understand the cultural significance of food choices.
"Rare is the Peruvian dish that does not include chile pepper. Each river valley oasis along the western slopes of the Andes has a microclimate that produces unique varieties of chile peppers, which are, in turn, completely different from the peppers native to the jungle." ~ pg. 19
Recipes for Rice Pudding look familiar and if you can find gooseberries, you can make the gooseberry marmalade to serve with quinoa crepes.
Other highlights include a section on helpful phrases you can use in restaurants. List of foods like "nuez moscada" have translations, nutmeg. If you order a tortilla, you will get an omelet.
Eat Smart in Peru will appeal to anyone who is curious about new culinary discoveries and wants to either travel to Peru or incorporate new recipes into their cooking repertoire.
~The Rebecca Review

Book Description
Is it possible to be a committed Christian and a rock superstar? Can political activists make good music? Do hugely successful rock bands really care about AIDS and poverty in Africa, or is it just another image-enhancing schtick? U2 and Philosophy ponders these and other seeming dichotomies in the career of the Irish supergroup. For over two decades, U2 has been one of the biggest acts in rock music. They’ve produced over a dozen platinum and multiplatinum records and won 15 Grammy Awards. Critics everywhere have praised the band’s thoughtful, complex lyrics and the artistry of their music. At the same time, Bono, the group’s lead singer, has dedicated himself to political and social causes, blurring the line between rock star and respected statesman. Offering fresh insight into the band’s music and activism, these thought-provoking essays allows fans to discover philosophy through the eyes of U2, and rediscover U2 through the eyes of philosophers.
Customer Reviews:
Great idea poorly executed.......2007-03-16
This could've been a great collection, but many of the pieces just aren't very well written. The writers use very few actual examples from U2's songs, and most of the chapters jump all over the place, with subtitles seemingly inserted at random. There are stylistic and spelling inconsistencies, as well as some factual errors (it lists The Unforgettable Fire as released in 1990, when in fact it came out in 1984, for example). While it's not a bad introduction to some key philosophical ideas, students would be better off seeking out a textbook or the original texts, and I don't think the scant references to U2 made any of the essays better. In fact, most of them felt convoluted because they didn't provide enough proof to back up what they were trying to argue.
That said, the chapter on the Joshua Tree and place was fantastic. If the whole book had been that way, I'd be writing a much different review. As it is, though, that chapter just made the others in the book look bad.
Good for those somewhat interested in philosophy, but U2 fans will be disappointed. Those interested in learning more about U2 would be better off searching out U2 at the End of the World or U2 By U2, or simply just listening to U2's music and thinking about it on their own.
A top pick for fans of the group.......2007-02-06
U2 AND PHILOSOPHY: HOW TO DECIPHER AN ATOMIC BAND is a top pick for fans of the group, introducing philosophy in the context of a popular music venue review to make it more understandable to modern audiences. What does U2 have to do with Plato, existentialism, and Nietzsche, among others? This is the perfect pick for a high school collection wishing to introduce students to philosophy without appearing dry or dull in the process!

EAT SMART IN BRAZIL
Reviewed by Sharon Hudgins, author of The Other Side of Russia: A Slice of Life in Siberia and the Russian Far East
Reading "Eat Smart in Brazil" made my mouth water! I'm a big fan of the "Eat Smart" travel guides for food lovers--and I'm always delighted when another book in this series is published. This second edition of Joan Peterson's "Eat Smart in Brazil" certainly lives up to the series' theme, promising to tell you "How to Decipher the Menu, Know the Market Foods, & Embark on a Tasting Adventure." And what an adventure this is! After an explanation of the historical, geographical, and ethnic influences on Brazilian foods and a description of five different regional cuisines within that huge country, the author then satisfies your desire to eat by providing nearly two dozen recipes for Brazilian dishes from appetizers to breads to desserts.
You'll also want to carry this book with you on your next trip to Brazil, because it contains a comprehensive glossary of food terms and cooking techniques in Portuguese (the language of Brazil), translated into English, as well as an extensive Menu Guide for translating terms that you'll find on menus and cafe chalkboards throughout Brazil. One of my favorite features of the Menu Guide is the author's marginal comments on many of the dishes listed: National Favorite, Regional Classic, Spectacular, Interesting, A Feast, Not to Be Missed, Excellent, Try Them All. Just reading these menu terms makes you want to book the next flight to Rio de Janeiro! Highly recommended!
Five Stars from BrazilMax.......2004-04-21
I'd like to see more of this kind of book. Written by experts in a readable style, "Eat Smart in Brazil" provides a succinct but informative overview of the country's culinary culture. It includes historical, ethnic and regional overviews, recipes, shopping tips (both for local markets and for when back home), a culinary phrase guide, and two Portuguese-to-English glossaries - one to help when ordering in restaurants and the other to clarify definitions of food names and cooking terminology. The Eat Smart series is published independently, under the Ginkgo Press imprint. Joan and David Peterson are literally eating their way around the world with Ginkgo. Besides Brazil, they've covered Turkey, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, Morocco, and India. Next up, Peru. Unlike the run-of-the-mill globetrotting guidebook writer, this couple knows its stuff - which, of course, would be food. (Bill Hinchberger is the editor of the BrazilMax website.)
Best Book I Took to Brazil.......2003-02-26
Just got back from the trip of a lifetime to Brazil. We visited our former exchange student and his family. We used this book to find out what we were eating (wonderful food!) at every resturant. Even though we were with native Brazilians who spoke English, they often did not know the English words for food.
We used it in Campinas, Paraty, Rio, and Santa Rita (MG). Near the end of our trip we went through the book and marked which foods were our favorites. I recommend this book to anyone taking their first trip to Brazil
What?.......2001-10-09
Brazil IS NOT made of Indian, Portuguese and African people descent. Brazil was colonized by Portuguese, African, French, Italian, German, and Duth people. Other people that were very expressive in Brazilian history were Chinese, Jewish, Arabic, Spanish..I'm sorry if I'm leaving some nations out of this equation (Brazilian people are a union of many people and cultures!!), but I've never read something SO absurd as this review.
Thanks
Delicious!.......2000-05-26

Fabulous asset for traveling foodies.......2007-07-03
This book, like other books in the Eat Smart series, guides the reader/traveler through the food history, best dishes, and regional favorites of the country. I loved having this while in Morocco, because I had a good idea what to order wherever I went. The book also gives you the phrases you need to both read the menu and order. It's simply an invaluable guide for those who consider food a major part of the adventure of travel.
A FIVE-STAR GUIDEBOOK!.......2005-05-26
I've been a fan of Joan Peterson's "Eat Smart" series ever since I discovered "Eat Smart in Turkey" and "Eat Smart in Brazil" in the 1990s. Now Ms. Peterson has come out with a new guide to the foods and foodways of Morocco, a country whose history is reflected in its richly varied cuisine influenced by nomadic Berbers, Arab conquerors, Sephardic Jewish settlers, and French colonialists. As the author states in the Preface, "What better way to get to know a culture than through its cuisine?"
This highly informative book provides an overview of Morocco's history, an in-depth look at the country's national and regional foods, and a selection of Moroccan recipes from appetizers to desserts, with color photographs of many of the dishes. But "Eat Smart in Morocco" is much more than an introduction to the culinary cultures of this fascinating country. It's also a practical guidebook that you'll want to take along on your next trip to Morocco.
One chapter gives helpful phrases (with their pronunciation) for use in restaurants and food markets. An extensive Menu Guide lists menu items alphabetically, with a description of each dish, followed by a Foods & Flavors Guide with a comprehensive list (and explanation) of Moroccan ingredients, spices, kitchen utensils, and cooking terminology. An extensive bibliography and very good index round out this book.
"Eat Smart in Morocco" is an indispensable companion for the intelligent traveler who is interested in that country's foods-and for anyone who wants to know what, and how, to eat in a Moroccan restaurant. Don't go to Morocco without it! Highly recommended. ----- Sharon Hudgins, author of "The Other Side of Russia: A Slice of Life in Siberia and the Russian Far East"
Perfect guidebook for a memorable culinary journal.......2003-01-30
Joan Peterson, the culinary mistress of the EAT SMART series, returns to feed our continuing love affair with foreign foods and flavors in her latest book, Eat Smart in Morocco. As much a travel guide as it is a cookbook, Peterson shares her knowledge of the history and cultural significance of native dishes as well as the traditions and secrets of Moroccan cooks. Her culinary tribute to the land and its people should be part of an official welcome packet given to every foreign visitor when they first step on Moroccan soil. As she writes, "What better way to know a culture than through its cuisine." Particularly helpful to travelers are her bilingual menu, and food and flavor guides. Whether you're a novice or experienced traveler, Eat Smart in Morocco is the perfect reference for a memorable culinary journey. --Kimberly Ouhirra, President, Exotica Oils, Inc.
Experience a gastronomic journey!.......2001-11-29
"Eat Smart in Morocco" uses significant historical facts to trace the rich culinary treasures of Morocco and its land. Readers can become more familiar with the culture and civilization through this guidebook and delight themselves with recipes from various contributors. The guidebook confirms that we can touch the heart of another culture through the flavors of its food and experience a gastronomic journey.

What a good idea!.......2001-11-13
This book is one of a type I was not familiar with: books for travelers who are also "foodies", that is, people for whom trying the local food is one of their main pleasures while traveling.
This book will let foodies explore Morocco's rich and unique cuisine in thier homes before leaving via descriptions of both the food and its context, and it even provides recipes to try first. Once in Morocco, there is a directory of regional cuisine, and a menu guide with transliterated Arabic names of dishes to help in ordering. I find Moroccan food some of the world's best and most varied, and this book makes it accessible to everyone.
I've traveled and worked in Morocco off and on for the last 35 years, and can attest that the recipes and descriptions are well-researched and accurate. Readers should enjoy this book, as a travel guide or as a 'virtual' trip to Morocco.

Amazingly researched and while it isn't literature, it IS fun..........2007-09-28
I am a bit puzzled at some of the reviews here. I wonder exactly what some were expecting this novel to be...? This is Stel Pavlou's first novel, and I have to say, all things considered, you can really TELL that a HUGE amount of research was put into it. Seemingly totally unrelated places, times and events are pieced together (some more natural than others I must say) but connecting the Book of Revelations to the Sphinx, the Mayan Civilization to Antarctica is no small task, but surprisingly it was (for the most part) very creatively done -- not necessarily believably, but creatively, YES.
Personally I love a good old-fashioned end-of-the-world disaster story, and this one was great. One VERY difficult thing to accomplish in writing in ANY field is how to effectively Dumb Down some of the science enough that you keep it credible while not over-simplifying it, or even worse, making it sound like science fiction. Crichton is VERY good at this, and Stel Pavlou does a remarkably good job, too.
Once again, do NOT begin this novel with the expectation that you will be reading literature, but a really fun action/adventure end-of-the-world thriller that yes, at times does strain credibility, but always stays FUN (at least I thought so). Compulsively readable and at times, informative, I have to say that as long as you begin "Decipher" knowing a few critical things first, the reading experience can be much more enjoyable. The suspension of Disbelief is a given here, but from plenty of reviews, it is painfully obvious that many who read (or at least attempted to read) this book just did not take the time to do. That one single task will go a long way towards making "Decipher" a much better reading experience. Of course, as usual though, this is MY opinion, Your Opinion May Vary (and quite possibly will).
To sum it up: I look forward to reading more from Mr. Pavlou if that means anything.
More entertainment and less pseudo SF pretentious writing.......2007-09-17
I keep on hoping for something good out of this monster. Some good insight to physics, or language decoding, or something. Not good war story, not good SF, horrible theology, and not entertaining. Granted it's a first effort, but author has much to learn. There are excellent books on cryposcience-- read cryptomicon by Stephenson. There are excellent adventure/underwater books like those by Cussler. There are entertaining religious books, like those by CS Lewis.
What went wrong? Too many things obliquely referred to and writer tried to present self as expert. For example, doesn't have a clue to the meaning of Revelation. Best he could come up with was Apache Helicopters being foretold. His weak attempt at understanding the numerology of Rev. was pathetic. He just throws out random quotes from Rev with no context and no interpretation. He would have been better off sticking to what he know and not trying to support his secularistic religion by making fun of others religions.
All said, thought I'm not ready to throw out the author. If he can learn to write something entertaining and with better attention to explaining his theories to the non technical. You shouldn't have to have a degree in physics in order to read a novel.
Best advice, if you want both an entertaining read and to learn about decoding messages, read the aforementioned book: Cryptonomicon. It's about the same length and is a 6 star read. It's both entertaining throughout and gives insight into the art of coded
This would make a great movie!.......2007-08-07
This book is badly written, but it's filled with neat ideas (the nano-swarm concept is fascinating, among others). I really hope it gets turned into a Hollywood movie some day - it would be perfect for that!
Eyes glazed over..........2007-07-16
My eyes glazed over some 100 pages into this SciFi thriller... hmmm, so if it's a supposed to be a thriller it clearly didn't keep me turning the pages. Rather convoluted story here, and I just couldn't commit to turning the last 400+ pages.
Its a story.......2007-07-10
This is in answer to all those 'critics' who droned on and on about 'bad science and theology'. This book is a STORY that means that its FICTIONAL (in just the same way as FingerPrints of the Gods, The Bible, Gone With The Wind and the Koran), its not meant to be believed, its meant to be a work of FICTION. Yes, I know the dialogue is a tad on the trite side (thats TRITE not *HITE) but all in all its still just a story and I have read dialogue thats much much worse.

Book Description
As the author of the Word Court columns that appear in The Atlantic Monthly and in newspapers nationwide, Barbara Wallraff is one of America's most widely read writers on language. She is beloved for her wit and renowned for the depth of her knowledge. Now, in Your Own Words, Wallraff answers common and uncommon questions about English--and simultaneously explains how she does it. She reveals how you, too, can be a language expert.
On one level, Your Own Words is about dictionaries, stylebooks, usage manuals, visual dictionaries, thesauri, writing guides, and the Internet: the strengths and weaknesses of these and other language-reference sources, where the sources disagree, and the ways in which even educated people misunderstand them. On a deeper level, however, Your Own Words is about how to make good form your own. While it evaluates the often contradictory advice that reference sources give, it encourages you to reach your own conclusions and develop a style that expresses you at your best.
Illuminated throughout with anecdotes and selections from the Word Court columns, Your Own Words accomplishes what very few books on usage even attempt: it shows everyone with an interest in words--amateur, professional, student, or graduate--how to think about what goes into good style.
Customer Reviews:
My Own Words.......2006-03-17
This is a gem of a book. Insightful, thoughtful, witty, fun, and, above all, sensible. But most of all it exudes good plain commonsense about language. I recommend it to anyone lost in the thicket of language usage who is looking for a machete.
Indispensable.......2005-11-30
For a serious writer or editor, this is an essential book. I keep it close by my dictionary, thesaurus, Chicago Manual, Garner, and Fowler's (the 2nd edition, of course, not the awful 3rd). Your Own Words is, as another reviewer aptly noted, a meta-reference, the one that allows me to find my way around the others and answer grammar and usage questions for myself. (I never, for instance, would have thought of using Google News as a usage guide.) The many selections from Wallraff's Atlantic Monthly column are a welcome bonus.
Sorry, Idea Good, Writing Bad.......2005-10-10
I found the writing of this book quite bad. While reading the book I felt like suggesting that the author find a good editor to clean up the uneven, choppy, and repetitious writing here. She uses the word "nowadays" all too often, I even found it in a passage which is attributed to a person who wrote into her column in The Atlantic Monthly. I could get out one of my old writing books and give specific examples of the areas that are in need of a tune up, but I do not wish to put that much time into this review, nor do I think that this is what this forum is meant for. And I do not relish giving a bad review, the author seems to be well intentioned and probably a good and productive person, but this is more the reason I felt the need to add my two cents.
I came here to Amazon's review forum to find out if anyone else felt the same way I did, and was amazed that so many well educated readers found the book so good. This is quite disturbing. I now doubt that well educated readers are able to discern between good and bad writing. It also makes me wonder if the reviews are from friends, many of them sounded so similar. The ideas are refreshing, but presentation could use one or two more rounds with a good, or perhaps different, editor.
Solid, informative, lively.......2005-02-07
I'm not sure how to characterize this book, as a reference, as a discourse on English and how it is evolving, as a guide to research tools in language and linguistics.
It is really all of them wrapped together, a distillation of what appears to be a dedicated life-long interest in language from a well-known Atlantic Monthly editor. It is in no way pointy-headed, the way so many language guides are. It is open to new ways of doing business in speaking or writing, and Wallraff shows us how to justify our judgements and back them up with quick searches in books or on the Internet.
There is a wit and sense of giving and forgiving, that there might be a right way or several right ways, that the language is changing and we need to uphold some standards and 'get a life' to let other standards evolve.
As an academic and a writer, I find the book insightful, unstuffy and, above all, very helpful. I read it, learned new approaches and feel that I will continue to build on those lessons.
An important new resource.......2004-06-08
What a terrific addition to my reference shelf! Wallraff's book supplies not only the entertaining and helpful answers about language we've all learned to expect after years of reading her Word Court column in the Atlantic, but also information I've never found elsewhere about how to find answers for ourselves when she's not around.
Your Own Words raises the value of all the other style guides, usage manuals, and dictionaries on your shelf by teaching you how to use those references (and many, many others) to best advantage, and she does it with her usual grace and good humor.
One of my favorite things about this volume: Wallraff gives both long and short explanations of her subject matter. Breaking the basics out in a distinct typeface, she gives you a choice of skimming the book for entertainment and some basics, or digging in deep for more information than you ever knew existed. As an editor, I think Wallraff's book is an essential new resource, but it's also a wonderful treat for anyone who loves language and just wants exceptionally readable insights into the craft of writing, editing, and research.
