Book Description
Guide to Network Defense and Countermeasures, 2E is the second of two books that are required for Level One of the Security Certified Program (SCP). This edition has been revised with updated content and maps clearly to the exam objectives for the current Security Certified Network Professional (SCNP) exam. Although the primary emphasis is on intrusion detection, the book also covers such essential practices as developing a security policy and then implementing that policy by performing Network Address Translation, setting up packet filtering, and installing proxy servers, firewalls, and virtual private networks.

Great Book for Security Beginers.......2007-02-16
I had some basic understanding of how TCP works, the layers, the terminology, but no knowledge about computer and network security. The book is great, the author assumes you know the basic networking termns but all content related to security is well written. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
The book covers a decade of work with some of the largest commercial and government agencies around the world in addressing cyber security related to malicious insiders (trusted employees, contractors, and partners). It explores organized crime, terrorist threats, and hackers. It addresses the steps organizations must take to address insider threats at a people, process, and technology level.
Todays headlines are littered with news of identity thieves, organized cyber criminals, corporate espionage, nation-state threats, and terrorists. They represent the next wave of security threats but still possess nowhere near the devastating potential of the most insidious threat: the insider. This is not the bored 16-year-old hacker. We are talking about insiders like you and me, trusted employees with access to information - consultants, contractors, partners, visitors, vendors, and cleaning crews. Anyone in an organizations building or networks that possesses some level of trust.
* Full coverage of this hot topic for virtually every global 5000 organization, government agency, and individual interested in security.
* Brian Contos is the Chief Security Officer for one of the most well known, profitable and respected security software companies in the U.S.ArcSight.

Real Life Security Stories.......2007-04-13
'Enemy at the Water Cooler: Real-Life Stories of Insider Threats and Enterprise Security Management Countermeasures' by Brian Contos is an interesting look at some real-life situations that have occurred where nasties have gotten into systems and wrecked the havoc that they are looking to cause. While some reviewers have argued that this book is just a sales pitch to go out and buy anti-hacker software and hardware to combat these criminals, they are probably right!!! Security is always a matter of finding the right balance but certainly erring on the side of caution certainly is the safer way to go in most cases!!
Good book for IT people and specifically security whizzes to take a look at.
**** RECOMMENDED
"If the only tool you have is a hammer, then every problem is a nail." .......2007-01-09
Ignore the main title - look at the subtitle. This book is little more than a sales pitch for Enterprise Security Management systems, or more specifically the ESM sold by the author's company, with a random assortment of largely unattributed and barely analyzed anecdotes on information security incidents mostly relating to ESM. The link to "insider threats' is tenuous at best and in the most part is merely used as an excuse to hype the wonders of ESM.
If you are seriously interested in ESM, you probably wrote the gushing "review notes" on the cover or the foreword (written by Hugh Njemanze, CTO of - you guessed it - the same ESM company). I'm far from convinced that anyone else (except perhaps from the ESM company and its customers who may be happy with an extremely biased view of the value of ESM) would benefit from this book, even if it is "vendor neutral" (page xxii). If you are looking for some meaningful insight into and analysis of the "insider threat", and perhaps some practical and worthwhile countermeasures apart from ESM, look elsewhere.
Explores an important often neglected topic.......2006-12-01
Even though hacker Kevin Mitnick's notorious exploits are more than a decade old, the media, and even some security professionals, continue to be obsessed with him. In early October 2006 alone, his name came up a few dozen times in a search of the prior month of Google News. Those obsessed with hackers are missing the far greater threat: trusted insiders.
The insider threat shouldn't be a surprise: employee theft takes a bigger bite out of retailers than does shoplifting, and company personnel give away more secrets than are stolen by spies.
On average, authorized network users gain access to 10 to 20 times more resources than they need to perform their jobs, and this extra access leads to most network security breaches. With that as its starting point, Enemy at the Water Cooler looks at the problem of the trusted insider and how to reduce both the threat and the vulnerability. Author Brian Contos astutely notes that insider attacks are the hardest ones to defend against, detect, and manage.
The first part of the book sketches the risks that insiders pose to an organization. It also details mechanisms that can be used to control these risks.
One such solution is ESM (Enterprise Security Management) software. (Full disclosure: the author is the CSO for a leading ESM vendor and some of the illustrations in the book are screenshots from this vendor's product.) ESM software centrally collects and analyzes log data from various entities within a network. When correctly deployed, ESM can be used to discover internal risks, in addition to correlating security information and performing other valuable tasks.
The final chapters of the book run through real-life case studies in which Contos shows how ESM mitigated, or could have mitigated, the risk.
Although the book has a lot of information, at $49.95 for fewer than 250 pages, the book is overpriced. Even though it can come across as self-serving, the book should be commended for tackling a vital and often neglected topic.
Great information and case studies - great book.......2006-11-15
This book was extremely easy to read and enjoyable. The case studies made complex concepts such as collaborative attacks and advanced intruder discovery/remediation techniques understandable. I've even shared the case studies with my management as examples of risk to help push our insider threat program forward. I found that sharing key case studies that are relevant to our business helped to make my point about why we need to pay more attention to threats from the inside. And the way the book is written, I don't need to translate tech talk to business talk.
In addition to the insider threat information, the initial chapter that gives an overview of computer-based threats from organized crime, nation-states and terrorist was an eyeopener. The author does an excellent job explaining how these groups use insiders (employees mostly) to help carryout their agendas.
Since reading the book I've also listened to several webcasts and podcasts from the author. I found these to be informative and in several instances, the case studies from the book are explored in even more detail as the author discusses subtitle points that aren't necessarily covered in the book.
I've read a few books on insider threat now, and this is by far one of my favorites, and more so, it has shown great utility at work. Engineers like it, and so does my senior management.
too relevant for today's security world.......2006-11-15
great problem statement and introduction to the overall issues and background surrounding insider threat. Insider threat is one of the hardest problems to understand and address in today's fast moving technology rich organizations. The author seems to have real world experience in dealing with these types of issues and I really enjoyed the insights especially in the use case examples. A nice read.
thanks

Outstanding .Net Security Book.......2007-05-23
This book shows you how to secure your applications steps by steps. I took the advises and lock down my IIS, and reset my .net configuration file in my asp.net configuration file.
At the same, I am setting up my web servers to track and trace people in and out the servers within the oranganization -- since my applications are running inside intranet.
Great book to have if security is you main concern!
If you only get one book on .NET web security, get this one!.......2006-03-31
I'm a Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer with reasonable experience of .NET web development, but little or no understanding of how to secure the applications that I write. But not any more. This book is excellent! It covers securing .NET web applications under the 1.0 and especially the 1.1 .NET framework. It does NOT teach the basic .NET technologies, ie: how to create a web program, but it explains in good detail (without going overboard) how the security mechanisms of .NET work, and how best to secure a .NET web application. It's a big book, with chapters covering topics like code access security and how to configure a web app for medium trust, how to secure web services and Remoting servers, and how to harden IIS, Windows 2000 and SQL Server, and loads more!
Before you consider buying any other .NET security book, get this one. It's worth every penny. It also has a companion volume, entitled "Building Secure ASP.NET Applications. Authentication, Authorization, and Secure Communication". Unfortunately, this book is not half as good as "Improving Web Application Security". Shame really. The books are supposed to complement each other, but "Improving Web Application Security" really stands out head and shoulders above the other. It's a must buy if you want to understand .NET web application security and the security architecture that underpins it.
A great counter measure: Annonymization.......2006-01-03
A great counter measure to deter potential hackers, is to eliminate identifying server response data that is necessary to complete the request. You can do this by removing HTTP response data, modifying cookie values, and adjusting other response information. Any easy way to do this is with www.ServerMask.com for IIS 4, 5, & 6.
Great ideas for countermeasures, less demonstration.......2004-10-29
I am in the business of writing secure e-biz apps and I found the security and countermeasure strategies in this book to be very thorough.
Now, why the 4 stars? Two reasons - 1. The author(s) are very repetitive. I read the section on countermeasures to SQL injection attacks 3 times in the book.
2. The countermeasures are demonstrated adequately but the attacks are not. For instance, what to do to thwart SQL injection attacks is explained with some examples. But what really is a SQL injection attack; plain description is not enough? Some non-trivial examples of those make sense because then you know the reason for deploying the countermeasures; what are you saving yourself against? Sort of, identifying the enemy.
Nevertheless, a great, comprehensive and practical tutorial.
Just get it!There is nothing that compares to it........2004-03-09
If you are designing, building and deploying Web based applications using Microsoft's .NET Framework run and get this book. Currently, there is no other book that can match the breath and depth of the topic covered in this book.
Contrary to what the title may imply, in addition to ASP.NET this book also covers how security should be addressed in the building of Serviced components, Web Services and Remoting. The chapters on Code Access Security are among the clearest that can be found anywhere.
This book takes a holistic approach to Security in that it addresses threats to the network, host and application layers. The old adage of a chain is only as strong as its weakest link is taken to heart in the book so guidance is provided on how security should be addressed across tiers and at multiple layers. Secure app development across the entire software development and deployment lifecycle is considered within the scope of this book.
In addition to Secure Coding guidelines, Extensive guidelines are provided that show how the Network, Web Server, Application Server and Database Server should be secured.
One of the things that I like about this book is that the guidance that is provided is task and role based. So even though the book is 800+ pages, it can be very easily used as a ready reference.
Multiple checklists that deal with Design, Build, Securing and Assessment are given and can be used out of the box.
In short, don't wait. Go get it now!
From the book's introduction:
Part I, "Introduction to Threats and Countermeasures," identifies and illustrates the various threats facing the network, host, and application layers. The process of threat modeling helps you to identify those threats that can harm your application. By understanding these threats, you can identify and prioritize effective countermeasures.
Part II, "Designing Secure Web Applications," gives you the guidance you require to design secure Web applications. Even if you have deployed your application, we recommend that you examine and evaluate the concepts, principles, and techniques outlined in this part.
Part III, "Building Secure Web Applications," allows you to apply the secure design practices introduced in Part II to create secure implementations. You will learn defensive coding techniques that make your code and application resilient to attack.
Part IV, "Securing Your Network, Host, and Application," describes how you will apply security configuration settings to secure these three interrelated levels. Instead of applying security randomly, you will learn the rationale behind the security recommendations.
Part V, "Assessing Your Security," provides the tools you require to evaluate the success of your security efforts. Starting with the application, you'll take an inside-out approach to evaluating your code and design. You'll follow this with an outside-in view of the security risks that challenge your network, host and application.

Thanks a lot, we are very happy to have this book in our library!
I learned a lot.......2006-11-15
This is a solid book and a detailed read. I was on the fence about giving it 4 or 5 stars; if I could I'd give it 4.5. While it didn't blow my socks off, I would suggest it to anybody interested in security monitoring in general. In terms of monitoring internal threats specifically it also has some useful information.
Excellent Book .......2006-07-20
Richard Bejtlich done great job again. Tao of Network security and this one are best companion. Well written. Extrusion topic is mostly companies preferred to spend budget or time and ignore. Although NSM methodologies are repeated but fun to read again. Traffic threat assessment, designing defensive network, and incident response are well written,
Excellent Book!.......2006-07-16
I have had the pleasure of reading Extrusion Detection: Security Monitoring for Internal Intrusions by Richard Bejtlich. Richard Bejtlich picks up where he last left off with his first book Tao of Network Security Monitor: Beyond Intrusion Detection. His new book deals with a subject that many businesses don't wish to think about, and what over 50% of attacks come from, Security breaches that come from the inside an organization. It is very unfortunate that this fact was not taken into consideration in Microsoft's XP SP2 firewall.
Richard starts with a short review of network definitions. One concept I really like is the Defensible Network which he states is not necessarily a secure network, "quite accurate".
Richard includes a listing networking monitoring tools with where you can go to obtain them; Full Content Data, Session Data, and Statistical.
This book includes good illustrations, explained pieces of code (more toward the second half of the book), and includes pictures of familiar hardware.
A new definition for me was "the sink hole", that redirects unknown traffic away from the customers.
This book is a good read and a very good book to keep in one's reference library. I will be obtaining Richard Bejtlich's Tao of Network Security Monitor: Beyond Intrusion Detection and I suspect this will be just as good.
nice usages of a sink hole.......2006-04-06
This book is a fine complement to Bejtlich's Tao of Network Security Monitoring. At first, one might think there would be considerable overlap between the two. After all, both concern crackers attacking a company's network that sits on the Internet. Yet the author takes pains to point out key differences. Tao was about an external attacker going at your servers, where these might be web or database [or other types of] servers.
The current text describes a qualitatively different game. Where a typical scenario might be one of your users, at her machine which is inside your network, surfing the Web. An attacker might try to target bugs in her browser, in order to install malware on her machine. This malware might then surveil that machine and others on the network, and hence ring home to the attacker's website. So extrusion detection involves at the very least defending your client machines, instead of your servers.
Bejtlich gives detailed examples of how to use various tools, typically open source, to monitor your internal traffic, looking for tell tale signs of extrusion.
Along the way, there is a nice description of two ways to use a sink hole. One is by an ISP, who is facing a Denial of Service attack against one of its customer's addresses. For this, a sink hole can be configured to divert those incoming packets, and protect the ISP's other customers. In a recent book, "Internet Denial of Service" by Mirkovic et al, various anti-DoS methods were cited, and this usage of a sink hole is an excellent example of another such method. While DoS is not an internal attack, it is still a very serious problem, and it is helpful to see a clear description of how to use a sink hole against it.
The other method of using a sink hole involves configuring it to attract traffic from internal machines that have been subverted. Here, this is entirely in keeping with the book's remit.

Informative look at the risks of digital espionage.......2005-06-01
Judging from the title, Secrets of Computer Espionage: Tactics and Countermeasures would appear to be geared to governments, security agencies, or high-level corporations. In fact, as the author makes clear, anyone with an Internet connection is a potential target of online espionage-even by such "mundane" means as viruses, worms, and phishing attacks-and this book is addressed to that huge audience.
Just who is spying on whom? The author explains that the typical person might be a target of bosses, friends, family members, hackers, and many others. Even people with nothing confidential or of value on their computers risk getting caught up in espionage and other cyber capers. For instance, hackers can use their computers as vehicles for staging attacks or as a location for storing illicit files, such as child pornography. And as more cell phones and PDAs connect to the Internet, the risks multiply.
What may be disturbing to some readers is that every computer device and peripheral provides at least one avenue of attack. The author explains many of these schemes, such as keystroke loggers and cleartext file transfers via file transfer protocol (FTP). In addition, operating-system and application-level vulnerabilities constitute even more ways that systems can be compromised.
Despite the grim picture painted by the author, the book isn't intended to make readers paranoid, but rather to acquaint them with the many risks posed by the Internet. This excellent book shows that someone quite possibly is out to get you, but it provides the tools to protect yourself.

Highly Recommended!.......2004-04-22
You and your computer face a dizzying array of security threats, writes tech consultant Joel McNamara. Competitors, cops, crooks and even disgruntled kin would love a peek at your hard drive. But don't hyperventilate just yet. If you calmly analyze the desirability and vulnerability of your secrets, you can figure out how to protect yourself. McNamara's prose is surprisingly clear given the degree of difficulty of his topic, and he offers a number of useful sidebars, charts and examples from inside the tech business to juice up his instructional tome. We suggest this practical book to managers charged with protecting corporate data, and to people who are unsure just how safe their computers are.
Wow! Absolutely a great, great book!.......2003-11-26
Joel McNamara's book is one of the very, very, few books that I classify as a "Must Read" for anyone involved in business or technology. This book does an amazing job of avoiding the "paranoia for paranoia's sake" tone seen so often in computer security books while still taking the issues seriously and discussing them intellegently.
The conversational tone is fun and often quite funny while not making the user feel talked down to. And Mr. McNamara does an equally great job of explaining very complex topics in way that works for both extremely sophisticated computer technology professionals and non-techies alike. I've brought this book around for side-discussions in the seminars I've given since it came out and my students, ranging from small business owners to 30+ year professional tech veterans in Fortune 50s have learned new and important lessons from it. For a book to address all these audiences is rare. For a book to succeed and be invaluable for all of them is virtually unheard of. This book succeeds amazingly well.
I've not only read the book through in one sitting, I keep referring back to it and it's incredibly useful web site on a regular basis.
Joel, thank you for writing one of the key books of the year!

You want what you paid for right? You got it!!.......2007-08-18
The title to this book says it all literally. I was skeptical at first and I thought the title was just hype to sell the book but after reading half of it in one setting, I was totally wrong. For the average guy with basic knowledge on the subject, this book is sure to build on that. What I love most about this book is when you read about countermeasures and all that stuff you also learn about the measures taken by operators. It's all how you read the book. This book is very detailed and amusing at the same time. The things people plan against you are very well thought out. The countermeasures are also genius. Once again, the title holds great justice to the material inside. Furthermore, the tactics in this book are still being used today if this helps you when debating on purchasing this book.
its about being followed, but does not cover other surveillance.......2007-07-05
This book is about detecting people who are following you, and observing your activities. It unfortunately does not cover countermeasures to other kinds of surveillance, such as video surveillance, which has become prevelant in our time.
Very detailed and informative.......2006-08-30
Though it can get a bit dry at times, reading this book through is very well worth it. It covers a lot of material, whether it be foiling foot, vehicular, or technical surveillance attempts. Unlike some books that will include a few pages on eluding surveillance, listing techniques like "leave the TV on if you think you're bugged" or "make two right turns if you think you're followed" and leaving it at that, this one will provide you with more discreet and effective ways at accomplishing these goals.
It also offers insight on the mindset of your adversary, the survelliance operative. It is obvious that the authors are very knowledgeable in this field. So if you want to learn how to detect and elude surveillance like a smooth operative, this book is your one-stop solution.
How To Watch Your Backside?.......2000-04-21
In the ever changing "Information Age" in which we exist, more and more of us are voicing concerns about our fear of "Big Brother" and the amount of privacy that we can continue to maintain. With government agencies and pseudo-agencies, as well as more and more online businesses requesting more of our personal data, and storing this info in larger and larger databases, we all should be rightly alarmed and concerned. This book, I find, provides very helpful advice to the consumer on how to try and preserve their privacy while also making you aware of how others (crooks) are constantly looking for ways to pilfer your identity. While some areas of the book I did not consider to be detailed enough (particularly, areas on surveillance), overall, I considered the book to be very informative. However, be aware, that the everyday consumer is not the only one who may be reading this book!

Book Description
Information Hiding: Steganography and Watermarking - Attacks and Countermeasures deals with information hiding. With the proliferation of multimedia on the Internet, information hiding addresses two areas of concern: privacy of information from surveillance (steganography) and protection of intellectual property (digital watermarking). Steganography (literally, covered writing) explores methods to hide the existence of hidden messages. These methods include invisible ink, microdot, digital signature, covert channel, and spread spectrum communication. Digital watermarks represent a commercial application of steganography. Watermarks can be used to track the copyright and ownership of electronic media. In this volume, the authors focus on techniques for hiding information in digital media. They analyze the hiding techniques to uncover their limitations. These limitations are employed to devise attacks against hidden information. The goal of these attacks is to expose the existence of a secret message or render a digital watermark unusable. In assessing these attacks, countermeasures are developed to assist in protecting digital watermarking systems. Understanding the limitations of the current methods will lead us to build more robust methods that can survive various manipulation and attacks. The more information that is placed in the public's reach on the Internet, the more owners of such information need to protect themselves from theft and false representation. Systems to analyze techniques for uncovering hidden information and recover seemingly destroyed information will be useful to law enforcement authorities in computer forensics and digital traffic analysis. Information Hiding: Steganography and Watermarking - Attacks and Countermeasures presents the authors' research contributions in three fundamental areas with respect to image-based steganography and watermarking: analysis of data hiding techniques, attacks against hidden information, and countermeasures to attacks against digital watermarks. Information Hiding: Steganography and Watermarking &endash; Attacks and Countermeasures is suitable for a secondary text in a graduate level course, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

Excellent introduction though overpriced.......2001-08-23
I found this book to contain an excellent introduction to steganography and watermarking that does not require an engineering degree to understand. This book goes into much more detail into the attacks against steganography and watermarking and illustrates novel appraches to counter. Though a bit overpriced, this book is a great companion to the Katzenbeisser, Petitcolas book. (Sounds like one reviewer has a personal beef.)
Worthless book.......2001-08-14
This looks like the PhD thesis of the first author. I feel amazed at how can someone get a PhD for unscientific work like this. The treatment of the subject is shallow to say the least. And it sells at almost a dollar a page!! I think someone interested in Steganography is better of buying the Petitcolas book which though not great is still reasonable.
