5 out of 5 stars A series your young reader will LOVE.......2007-03-22

This is the first in a series of books, that my son was introduced to by a friend. The unique thing about the series is that although there are pictures, many of the words are written in creative text or printing, in a variety of colors, right in the paragraphs as well. This really makes for keeping a young reader engaged with the story, especially for those that are transitioning from books with pictures to chapter books, and chapter books that are all text.

My son is currently in 2nd grade, but is reading well above grade level, independantly. The challenge for him is that what he CAN read, he's not intested in yet, and what is at his grade level doesn't hold his interest. He has been devouring these books in around a week each. We also read aloud to each other from them, and they are very entertaining, even as adults.

A wonderful series, great, I think for boys and girls alike as there are very strong, positive main characters that are both male and female.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Series!!.......2006-01-25

If you are looking for a new book series, this should be it! There are 24 books out so far, and I have read them all. They are funny, clever, and have lots of funny mouse jokes. They are perfect for ages 7 and up, and come out bi-monthly. They are the best series of books ever. They originally came from Italy, if you're wondering. They are great, so read them ALL!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun, humours and pleasant to the eyes.......2005-07-30

There's one fine line between well-played and over-played layouts. The full Geronimo Stilton series falls into the well-played category: the outcome is pleasant and not too loud and the fonts / colour used are really a statement on their own.

Another point to note is the translation involved. While this is not "literature" literature, the adaptation in cultural and linguistics aspect are well taken care of.

I don't know any Italian but have compared the Chinese and English versions of the same book (yes, my colleague at work has the entire Chinese series while I'm catching up by matching the English version). The funny bits are transformed elegantly.

Recommended to not only children, but anyone who's intersted in translating humour and layout.

5 out of 5 stars On the Trip to Find the Lost Treasure.......2005-05-14

It all started when Thea found an old map with an x for the spot where the treasure was. She dragged her brother Trap and her cousin Benjamin on to the trip. They took a boat there and a few days later a hurricane struck. Find out what happened to Benjamin, Thea, and Trap.
I really recommend this book because the details were great. It's a great adventure and this book is good for kids from second grade to fifth grade. You should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Geromino Stilton Rocks!.......2005-04-20

As my 8 year old son would put it. Geronimo Stilton series is the FIRST book series that my son is willingly reading. The use of different fonts, colors and most of all humor in the book is what has kept him captivated. My 6 year old who is reading "Junie B Jones" chapter books has picked Geronimo as well.

Geronimo books are packed with references to popular culture, all re-worded to match the mouse vocabulary. And my son finds it particularly fun to "translate" mouse terms into something that he uses everyday. For example New Mouse City (New York City), Mousific Ocean (Pacific Ocean), San Mouscisco, etc.

I would also applaud to the translator who did wonderful job on the books translating them from Italian. We could hardly wait fo the next installment of the series.

So, in short, if you have a reluctant reader in your family, give Geronimo a try. It might just do the trick!

5 out of 5 stars Great fun in the car!.......2007-10-07

My son is just turning 3 and LOVES to listen to Geronimo in the car. The chapters are just the right length for short trips to the supermarket or post office. He quotes the narrator and loves the sound effects. It is entertaining for me too. Trust me, I've heard these 3 stories again and again. I got introduced to the series from a free CD of Curse of the Cheese Pyramid in the kid's meal at Wendy's. (I wish more fast food places would try this as a prize instead of plastic junk--it really gets the kids interested in reading.) He loved it and I've bought the first 2 sets in the series. If it's great for a 3 year old, it would be even better for kindergarten - 3rd graders too. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Geronimo Rocks.......2007-06-13

The Geronimo series books and audio books are all great. The audio books are well-done and do a lovely job of bringing stories to life. I definitely recommend listening to Sitlton for a long car/plane ride rather than the brain-numbing GameBoy. And my husband and I even enjoy listening in and will play the CD in the car rather than letting our kids listen privately on their Ipods. I also find these audio books to be a great price. If you're not familiar with the actual books, give them a try, too. The puns captivate your older reader who may techinically be older than the suggested reading level, and the fun colored fonts will encourage younger readers to push themselves. I am a big believer in reading books both below, at, and above reading levels (to gain confidence, push yourself, reinforce, and enjoy), so the Geronimo books are wonderful to appeal to those from ages 6 to 10 minimum.

5 out of 5 stars A Book Review From a Spiritridge Third Grader.......2007-03-22

Do you want to read an exciting hilarious book? Well then The Curse of the Cheese Pyramid is waiting for you! Geronimo is a great newspaper editor. He has to go to Egypt because a scientist, Albert Spitfur, has a new way to make electricity! Geronimo went to Egypt because he needs to report the new way to make electricity. Geronimo's great grandfather is on a money diet (he is not spending a lot of money). Weird things happen, you will have to read the book! Oh, did I say they talk about cheese a lot in this book? Well they do!

I like how great grandfather William always calls Geronimo and screams at him, "You're spending too much money", when he really is not!

I recommend this book to people who like talking animals, Egypt and lot's of cheese! So read it!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-10-16

My 9 Year old daughter was having some trouble with her reading and the entire Stilton series has reversed that. The books are very well written for young readers and the stories are even fun for the parent to read as well. Overall this is a fun series with alot of good humor and will make you child enjoy their reading experience

Midnight Louie scoffs, but when the seance ends abruptly with the murder of a famous psychic, his well-trained nose smells something fishy, and it's not his dinner. When Temple discovers that the dead man was a debunker of false psychic phenomena, making any other supposed psychic in the room a prime suspect, she knows there's more to this case than meets the eye.

5 out of 5 stars Seances, ghosts and murder, oh my!.......1999-03-29

Cat With an Emerald Eye sees that irresistable inter-species team of Temple Barr and Midnight Louie, PI up to their respective heels and paws in the occult when a psychic is murdered at a seance held to contact the ghost of Harry Houdini. When it turns out that the victim was really a magician attempting to expose phony psychics, this dynamic pair is off searching for the killer. Temple must turn to one of her beaux, the Mystifying Max Kinsella, a friend of the victim while juggling her feelings for Matt Devine, the handsome ex-priest and martial arts practitioner. Louie, on the other hand, must reluctantly rely on Karma, the mystical Birman who lives with Temle's landlady, Electra Lark. While Temple and Max search for the killer in the victim's own files, Matt sees a ghost from his past-the once and future Cliff Effinger. Meanwhile, Louie's life is complicated, not only by murder but by his relationship with his daughter, Midnight Louise, his own father, Three O'Clock Louie and the revelation that his now has his own neamisis, a dude who threatens his very future. Once again, the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride in this, the sixth book in the Midnight Louie series and left wanting more, more mysteries and more of the characters Douglas so skillfully creates.

4 out of 5 stars The mystery is actually stronger than the Midnight Louie.......1998-10-15

An offbeat entry to the series - the various mysteries are more engrossing than the feline hero for once. The reader gets to hear Max's side of the story (one of 2 men PR-person and sometime-sleuth Temple Barr is attracted to) while getting caught up in a mystery involving a haunted house and a seance. There's also a fascinating sidebar with Temple's other fellow, Matt, and his glimpse of an-all-too-real ghost from his past. The overall atmosphere of the book is rather haunting and melancholy, marred only by Louie's slightly ridiculous take on things. I'm fond of the feline, but kitty seanaces? A little too over the top for me....

5 out of 5 stars San Francisco Chronicle Book Review, 12/15/96.......1997-07-23

Midnight Louie is known as a big, bad, streetwise kind of guy, but in his latst antic adventure, the beguiling cat-about-town shows his sensitive side. In "Cat with an Emerald Eye" both feline super sleuth Louie and his human companion, Las Vegas public relations woman Temple Barr, find themselves communing with the occult, and Louie, needless to say, proves to be the more adept. "I am beginning to think that I am as superior at seeing what is not there as I used to be at seeing what was there," the super sleuth meows. There is indeed a murder involved...but you get the feeling that the murder is almost incidental in Carole Nelson Douglas' mysteries. The real mystery is which of her two beaux will win Temple-Mystifying Max the magician, who is "like a volcano, unpredictable and exciting," or the ex-priest, Matt Devine,"who made her feel so utterly secure it was...divine. Max was caffeine, Matt was...chamomile tea. Max was edgy nerves, Matt was nirvana." The two men are linked not only by their love for Temple but also by two dead bodies, a connection that is played out slowly, book by book. In this one, Matt believes he glimpses one erst-while corpse, his wicked stepfather, making his way through Las Vegas. But the advantage, nevertheless, belongs to Max, for whom the dead magician/medium was a mentor. Though Max "needed to keep secrets about himself the way some other peole bled personal data like information-age hemophiliacs," he does, at last, give Temple some insight into his teenage summer in Ireland, when all his troubles started and he got into hot water with the IRA and involved with Interpol. But the motely crew of psychic suspects, Temple's tempestuous love life (not to mention her world-class shoe collection) and Max and Matt's past and present problems are just part of the fun. It's hard not to be charmed by Temple's eccentric landlady and her astral-projecting cat Karma ("the little piece of pussycat pixiedom" Louie calls Klinkerball). Louie's semi-retired father, Three O'Clock Louie, also makes an appearance, as do shades of Elvis, Amelia Earhart, Orson Wells and the late, great Harry Houdini. You never know what madness and mayhem you'll find in Douglas' mysteries, but you can be sure it will be wild, witty and utterly irresistible.--reviewed by Alix Madrigal

4 out of 5 stars I love Midnight Louie, but..........1997-03-23

I have read all of Ms Douglas' Midnight Louie books to date and thoroughly enjoy them. There are two different points of view in the chapters of her books. Some are from the point of view of our heroine Miss Temple Barr, a Vegas PR agent, and some are written from the point of view of her very streetwise cat Midnight Louie. I really enjoy reading his chapters and their uniquely slanted opinions of all things cat and human. Somehow Miss Barr and Louie always find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery. And of course, Emerald Eye is no exception. As much as I love this series, however, I must rank this particular volume a bit low as the whole concept seemed a bit bizarre to me. Seances in general don't do much for me, and a seance held with the idea of raising the spirit of Harry Houdini - too much. All the spiritual and new age frou-frou were things I could happily do without. Also there is a back-of-the-story tale going on with Temple and her two loves Matt and Max which I am enjoying following. This volume made little progress with that story line and I missed it. If this is your first Midnight Louie book, don't judge the whole series on the basis of this one. Check out some of the earlier volumes, or better yet, start with the first and read them all

4 out of 5 stars Familiar Themes done Very Well.......2006-02-19

Emerald Eyes has not sold particularly well. It is not likely to be made in to a movie any time soon. The avowed thirty-plus publishing ambitions have silently waned in to something closer to four or five. If the book survives, it will survive based upon an underground network that it is establishing. It has survived this long because of the great ambition the book has in exploring themes of time travel, genetic engineering, and political hegemony that are so interesting and so prevalent to many science fiction fans. Yet will it exert any influence? Are authors writing today in 2006 taking up themes that Moran wrote about back in 1987? Or in the nearer term, are cyberpunk writers hacking away on their countercultural Macintoshes dealing with complexities Moran has set up? We have to say, not yet. This book has probably sparked ideas but not shaped them.

      Who should read this:

This book has a very specific focus. Fans of science fiction who are avidly interested in telepathy and the moment of human evolution to a post-human status will be very intrigued by this book. People who enjoy action-oriented, thrill-ride science fiction novels that still have some ambition and meat to them-Ender's Game being a good example of this type of pacing--will like this book as well. Emerald Eyes is quite a bit better than the great many mass-market paperback sci-fi novels you're going to find on the typical bookshelf in an airport. Movie fans of Blade Runner, The Matrix movies, Ghost in a Shell, and perhaps even Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, should check this book out... and that covers quite a lot of people! Not as challenging, perhaps, as the meatier stuff from Gene Wolfe and John Crowley but not every time and for every book do people want to feel like they're fighting the author every step of the way.

      Who should pass:

Philosophers should not enter. There's just enough ambition here that people with some background and training will only find themselves teased. Quite obviously, if you tire of familiar themes of eugenics and political hegemony and instead crave books in weird, new settings engaging in events never seen before, then you're going to be rather bored here. Emerald Eyes is a novel where familiar things happen but done very, very well: not new things done well but familiar things done well. There's the very practical matter of finding the book at all. Because it's published in a small press and from some time ago, getting your hands on a copy will require some effort over the Internet.

      4 out of 5 stars Definitely underrated.......2003-08-09

Even after years and several moves, this is still one of my favorite books. If you're a fan of action/adventure fiction that doesn't delve too deeply into emotional territory, this is for you. I consider this - along with Steven Boyett's "Ariel" - to one of the most underrated sci-fi/fantasy works published.

      4 out of 5 stars A fun ride!.......2003-01-29

Long a favorite of the rec.arts.sf.written newsgroup, Daniel Keys Moran is an author who, by all rights, should be more popular than he is. Here is a writer who has an world so thoroughly mapped out that he plans thirty-two books to tell its entire story. While his influences are centered directly in the science fiction field, his plotting and writing are strong, if not subtle. What makes Moran so different from bestselling authors like, say, Orson Scott Card or Lois McMaster Bujold, who have similar influences and styles? Maybe it is because he is not as prolific as these two, and can't satisfy the fan craving for one to two books a year?

Let me get it straight here, and say that Moran's writing is never going to win him any literary prizes. His goal is adventure on the grand scale, not style or depth of human understanding. Yes, he can touch on emotions, but it is the action--the events--that concern him. It is a proud science fiction tradition, of which Asimov was its chief adherent for so long. Moran's a modern author, though, and while he writes in a traditional manner, his subject matter and some of his language would have been quite shocking in 1950.

Emerald Eyes is the first volume in Moran's epic vision of a series entitled "The Tales of the Continuing Time," a series that he has been planning and designing since he was thirteen years old (he goes into this in a quite amusing afterword to this volume). I remember doing the same thing when I was a teenager; I had a couple of spiral ring notebooks that I wrote the adventures of a couple of friends and myself interacting with fantasy and movie characters. I had them all planned out in alphabetical order, with the first two volumes entitled Anything Can Happen and Does and Anything Goes (I know, I know, but I was young, and it is amazing the sheer intensity and ambition of youth). I wonder now where those two notebooks are, having lost my vision sometime in high school. Moran's vision never left him, and he continued to define, invent, and catalogue characters and events in the epic struggle of the "Time Wars."

The timing of Emerald Eyes is in 50 years, when the United Nations has assumed control over the earth, sometimes by force as in the case of Japan and the United States. The French, who backed the UN early, are the ethnicity that now is in the ascendancy. Trying to genetically engineer humans to be better soldiers for them (to help control what they view as endless resistance), they create a race of telepaths, the first of which is Carl Castanaveras. Most of the novel is about Carl's struggle to free the telepaths (numbering almost 350 after thirty years of gene splicing and cloning experiments) from being slaves in the service of the U.N.'s peacekeeping force.

There's a lot going on beyond that in this novel, because of the depth of Moran's world building. The story may follow one plot, but there's many more sub-plots going on that intermix with the major plot, and while some of them are resolved, many of them are left to be the subject of later volumes. In most cases, this would be extremely annoying, but Moran makes it work through a combination of first person and third person narration, and through the jutzpah of trying to envision a series involving time travel in such detail. After finishing Emerald Eyes, it is hard not to desire more, to find out exactly what was going on with Camber Tremodian and his prey, what the House of November was and what was its gift, what a Long Run entailed, and who was Lady Blue.

This is stuff that cults are built around, and Moran has his faithful. But, for some reason, none of the faithful seem to be publishers. There have only been three novels of the Continuing Time published (I think--I was trying to figure out if Moran's first novel, Armageddon Blues, was a Continuing Time novel or not), and recently Moran bought the rights to the books back. His most recent effort is a collaborative novel with his sister that I do not believe is in this series. I enjoyed Emerald Eyes, and I've been told that The Long Run is even better. If it is, I might have to join the faithful and queue up to wait for future volumes, even if Moran has to self-publish them.

5 out of 5 stars Where is the publication of AI War?.......2003-01-28

I've read "The Long Run" at least three times and "Emerald Eyes" and "The Last Dancer" each once. They are all fantastic, but I have one burning question - Where is The AI War listed as a completed work in the inside cover of "Emerald Eyes" new edition. This has to be the new volume on Trent the Uncatchable. The "Storyteller" has already told that he will die and then come back before disappearing into space and he has warned of the threat of an "AI War" so it figures that this volume would be the book we've been waiting for, originally promised to be completed by 1993.
So much happens in each of the volumes that you really have to check back and forth to see who the players are and who they will become, but the work as a whole is fascinating. I'd commend it to any sci-fi fan like myself. It's the best series since Gordon R Dickson finished the "Dorsai Saga".

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful edition of a great book.......2002-09-16

Emerald Eyes is the opening act of Moran's stories about Trent and the Castanaveras telepaths. It covers how the telepaths were created, how they were destroyed, and how Trent and Denice survived. The characters are perhaps less well-formed than one would like--it's really not a very long book, and Moran spends a chunk of his time on showing us glimpses of the larger universe, glimpses that are hard to understand until you read The Last Dancer. But, if you like stories with a lot of mythic impact, then you'll love this one.

The text of the limited edition is slightly different from the paperback edition that came out in 1989. It's the same editor (who's now Moran's wife), so you don't get much in the way of really glaring changes; most of the ones I spotted were improvements. (I haven't gone through and compared them side-by-side yet, but I've read the paperback 5-10 times, so any differences tended to catch my eye.) Some of the more artificial bits have been trimmed (e.g., the line where Trent says of Carl, "His grammar is poor, but he never says anything he doesn't mean."), and some of the phrasings have been improved. Nothing major, but enough that I'm not going to get rid of the paperback.

The novella tacked on to the end, The Star, is from Trent's time in the Fringe. It's a nice bit of backstory for The Long Run, but mostly it's just a minor adventure story. Worth reading, but I'm glad I didn't have to buy it separately.

      Book Description

Mira Rothenberg pioneered both the clinical distinction and treatment protocol for autistic and severely disturbed children as separate from those for the mentally retarded. Winner of a Woman of the Year award from the New York City Chamber of Commerce and the National Organization for Mentally Ill Children, she writes here eloquently of a lifetime of taking on seemingly hopeless cases and bringing these children, through painstaking therapy and love, back into the world. Children with Emerald Eyes includes case histories ranging from incarcerated teenagers to a profoundly autistic six-year-old, told with the same power and sympathy Rothenberg used in her practice.

      5 out of 5 stars Deeply Moving.......2005-11-05

This book is a series of case studies of emotionally disturbed children whom the author worked with in the fifties and sixties. It's a little strange that the book is categorized as being about autism, because the word 'autism' appears rarely if ever in the book. The author views these children's problems as resulting from traumatic childhood experiences, not brain chemistry problems. She doesn't blame the parents for these problems; often the parents have their own psychiatric problems, or the child's trauma is something that the parents could never have prevented. Her focus is only on the child, and how best to understand and save him.

Mira Rothenberg is an excellent writer. Read the first few pages, which Amazon provides, to get a taste. The stories she tells are always poignant and often very disturbing. In story after story, she pours her heart out to children who are angry, withdrawn, non-verbal, violent, and usually incontinent. At stake in each story is a human life: If she fails, then the child typically will be warehoused in a state mental hospital. To save them from this, she suffers their abuse and manipulations for months or years. It's impossible not to admire her courage and fortitude, especially because not all the stories have happy endings. Every mental health professional should read this book.

This isn't a happy book. But the pain it describes is overwhelmingly powerful--and real. If you suffered intensely as a child, or love someone who did, then this book could change your life.

2 out of 5 stars Think twice before reading if you love an autistic child.......2005-06-27

My feelings about this powerful book are quite mixed. On one hand, you have to have tremendous admiration for Mira, the author. She obviously cares extremely deeply for the children profiled here. She dedicates herself to them, working with them day and night and in some cases even taking them into her home. The world of special needs children needs people like her.

On the other hand, I was quite upset by this book. This mainly was probably a case of changing times, as this book was written about the 50s and 60s, when thoughts were quite different about autistic children. But it's still a popular book, and I fear people reading it might be influenced by it. Mira overtly or not in most every case blames the parents somehow for the extreme problems of their children. At the end of the book it is even revealed that this damage to the kids might somehow be done by telepathy! She also seems to have a theory that autism has much to do with a fear of death, and most of the behaviors we see are attempts by the children to ward off death. She twists their actions to fit this.

It would be impossible in today's world, with the explosion of autism, for children to get the intense treatment profiled here by anyone but their parents. However, after reading this, it makes you feel like for children such as this, getting away from their parents is the best thing---Mira seems to encourage children to see HER as the parent. As someone quite familiar with the world of autism, books like this leave me feeling very upset. If you are simply interested in a dramatic presentation of highly disturbed children, you will find that here. However, if you are the parent of an autistic child, you might want to think twice before reading this highly outdated book.

5 out of 5 stars Deeply moving, stories told with love........2005-05-20

Mira Rothenberg writes in an easy style, this is not a book full of clinical analysis. What does come through is the wonder of a life filled with caring and love of her patients - that care being as much of an influence on her techniques as her clinical training.

The stories are amazing, not all have a happy ending - but each gives an insight into the minds of the misunderstood, tortured souls Mira worked with. Such was her understanding, even the teenage ex-gangster mole's incarcerated in the children's prison, are shown to be truly innocent young girls, fighting to stay alive in an unforgiving and brutal world.

I first read this book when I was 15yrs old, it remains one of my most treasured possessions.
