Book Description
“'You will do foolish things' said the great writer Colette, 'but do them with enthusiasm!' And that, my darlings, I have done! So put your feet up, relax, and let me take you on one woman's journey through the beguiling, bewildering wilderness of romantic encounters, replete with puppy love, Latin love, smoldering lust, stardust, obsession, high comedy, high camp, and all manner of peccadilloes and misadventures. A rollicking, madcap ride through the wide-open countryside of love. Just watch out for land mines.”
--From My First Five Husbands . . . And the Ones Who Got Away
People always ask me if I'm like Blanche. And I say, 'Well, Blanche was an oversexed, self-involved, man-crazy, vain Southern Belle from Atlanta -- and I'm not from Atlanta!’” -- Rue McClanahan
Who can forget Rue McClanahan as the sexy Southern vixen, Blanche Devereaux, on the Emmy-award winning series The Golden Girls? With her breezy sex appeal and sharp comedic timing, Rue infused her character with a sassy joie de vivre that captured the hearts of audiences around the world. Now, the actress behind the magic reveals her life in and out of the spotlight in a laugh-out-loud funny memoir about love, marriage, men, and getting older that is every bit as colorful as the characters she plays.
Raised in small-town Oklahoma in a house “thirteen telephone poles past the standpipe north of town,” Rue developed her two great passions—theater and men—at an early age. She arrived in New York City in 1957 with two-weeks worth of money in her pocket, hustled her way into a class with the legendary Uta Hagen, and began working her way up in the acting world against the vibrant, free-spirited backdrop of the sixties. That’s when she met and married Husband #1—a handsome rogue of an aspiring actor who quickly left her with a young son. Still, she was determined to make it on the stage and screen—and in the years that followed, rose to the top of the entertainment world with a host of adventures (and husbands) along the way.
From her roles on Broadway opposite Dustin Hoffman and Brad Davis, to her first television appearances on Maude and All in the Family, to the Golden Girls era and beyond, My First Five Husbands is the irresistible story of one woman’s quest to find herself. Now happily married to Husband #6, Rue is proof that many things can and do get better with age—and that with tenacity, talent, and a little help from Saint Dymphna, even a small-town girl can make it big.
Told with Rue’s saucy wit and Southern charm, My First Five husbands is a deliciously entertaining take on life and love from an irrepressible star.

Light hearted reading.......2007-08-23
I love Rue McClanahan and couldn't wait to get her book. It was a fun read and I did enjoy it but don't look for too much depth.
"Frippery combined with fierceness".......2007-07-14
I love "The Golden Girls" and couldn't wait to read Rue McClanahan's autobiography. She writes in a manically bubbly style, gushing over the highs and lows of a long show-biz career and a love-life so hot it would make even Blanche Devereaux blush.
Eddie Rue McClanahan was born into a conservative Oklahoma family during the Depression, and from an early age wanted desperately to be popular. Popular, to Rue, meant being loved and adored by men, and she was always falling in love too easily. She was a struggling stage actress in New York with two quick marriages and divorces under her belt when she met Norman Lear who began casting her in TV sitcoms. Two more divorces later, she landed the role of the man-hungry Blanche on "Golden Girls," The Golden Girls" The Golden Girls - The Complete First Season and world-wide fame. Breast cancer and husband number 5 bring her story up to date.
I was fascinated with Rue's unfailing optimism, her gritty determination to succeed as an actress, and her abysmally poor decisions when it came to men. I gave up counting how many affairs she had, and was appalled at how quickly she married and then lost interest in her husbands. Some were physically and emotionally abusive and some were just weird. Now in her seventies, Rue is still the ageless coquette, the belle of the ball. She names names and doesn't pull any punches in this book; Rue's fans won't be able to put it down.
Delightful.......2007-07-05
Excellent book to read for fun. I found this book very enlightening and couldn't wait to read in the evenings. Ms. McClanahan writes a totally honest and unbiased book and I'm amazed at all the twists and turns that she experienced in her career and person life. She tells the story like a true Golden Girl would tell it. However, she must have been busy constantly because 'The Golden Girls' show is only a small part of her career.
So much to love!.......2007-06-13
As someone who is 21 years old, I'm sure a lot of people are wondering why I'd be interested this book, but I absolutely adore Rue McClanahan and always have since I was little girl watching Golden Girls. This was a wonderful book. I enjoyed hearing about all of her experiences and revelations. She has a brilliant writing style and as someone mentioned before it is definitely like listening to great girl talk from one of your girlfriends! This was such a fun read and I'm sad I finished it in two days. I wish there was more to read!!! It deserves more than 5 stars. Thanks Rue for making me laugh for the past 18 years of my life!
Five Husbands and She Kept trying!.......2007-06-12
I am happy for Rue McClanahan who finally found happiness with number six, Morrow Wilson. They are happily living in New York City with their cat, Bianca. Rue's autobiography is touching as revealing. I never cared for Blanche as much as I cared for Vivan on Maude and Aunt Frances Crowley on Mama's Family. The book explained that Rue was having health problems which explained her absence from Mama's Family. Lucky for millions of others, they got to see her in the role of a lifetime playing Blanche Deveraux for eight seasons on the golden hit, The Golden Girls. It brought her international fame. It's a popular show around the world especially in England where even British sitcom stars like the late John Inman and Frank Thornton sing it's praises. I love Rue's almost tell-it-like it is biography. Her love for Brad Davis and many other lovers as well as the gay following of the Golden Girls which I didn't know there was until I read the book. She writes about her difficult labor with her only child, Mark, who she writes fondly and dedicates the book too. She doesn't mention Wicked on Broadway. She does not slight or offend any of her co-stars of the past. I wished there was a photo of her as Aunt Fran and Vivian on Maude. To me, she'll always be one or the other. I have seen Golden Girls enough and while I admire it's writing, acting, and the sensation that it caused on television. I still think Rue rather as Aunt Fran, the old maid journalist and aspiring writer. If Mama's Family hadn't been cancelled, Rue would still be playing Aunt Fran to Betty White's Ellen but I think the funniest thing was when Vicki Lawrence sent a male stripper to her hospital room when she was recovering as a present. It was something more of Blanche than of Aunt Fran.

First Book I've Read In The Series.......2007-02-11
Coming into a series midway may not be the best way to get a handle on the characters and subplots involved. Characters get introduced and recur in a series that it can be hard for the beginning reader to get a handle on. Looking at the other reviewers of the book, it appears that my view may suffer from this entry into Peters' "Amelia Peabody" series with book 14.
Saying that, the book was enjoyable. Peters has a doctorate and egyptology and it enables her to give a vivid portrait of WWI Egypt, and knowing a little about the period myself (though not to Peters' extent) an accurate one.
The Peabodys -- Amelia, Emerson, Ramses, and Nefret -- are an engaging group and their adventures are quite fun. I liked the descriptive nature of Peters' writing. The humor is light, but not overly slapstick. The plot, however, was weak, though again this comes from someone who has not read the earlier books of the series and thus the minor characters who moved in and out of the telling had nuances that were lost on me.
The overall 3 stars is a "rounding down" as I would put it at just shy of a 3.5, but my caveat would be to start with the earlier books in the series. A theme that seems to be shared by the other reviewers.
Another wild ride in wartime Egypt........2006-01-14
This book will certainly have you turning pages through the first 350 pages. The last 100 or so seem a bit anti-climatctic, but this book is a gem anyway. In it we have two main adventures. The first part of the book is devoted to beautiful Luxor and tomb robbers, murder and mayhem. The second part puts the Emersons right in the thick of World War I intrigue between England and Turkey, and puts all of them, especially Ramses in grave danger. But as usual, through all the suspense you will laugh throughout. These characters that Ms. Peters has created are so life-like that they jump out of the pages at you and inhabit your heart. What a wonderful series this is!
Indiana Jones meets Jane Eyre.......2006-01-11
The feisty Father, the parasol-loving Mother, affectionate doctor Nefret and phlegmatic Ramses. A well written novel of historical mystery and romance. I wouldn't say it's a thriller, since the the romance part is the majority of the story.
Set in Egypt during the height of World War I, a husband-and-wife + son-and-daughter-in-law Egyptologists adventures were told in a very interesting way. Being my first Elizabeth Peter's Amelia Peabody adventure, I found this lady writer has developed a romance story, while enveloping it with history and adventure quite well. There are many mundane daily things which are missed in current thriller novels which were not skipped by the author. Which, by themselves are quite interesting since the reader can try to relate how people during the early 1900s era might lived their lives.
Though it was written quite excellently, I did not find the edge of plot too convincing. The author left the end dangling, which is what she had in mind to prolonged these series. The culprit in this novel, Jamil, was nowhere to be found. Waiting for the next novel to pick up the saga.
Anyhow, an excellent read for anybody interested in romance, adventure and Egyptian hystory novels.
My first.......2005-12-21
Probably the best mystery author I have ever read. Great mix of mystery and history. The dynamics of the family are interesting to watch as well. Emilia is hilarious and Ramses is fantastic in his role but why does Emerson have nothing to say but "hell and damnation"?
Overall-Good story.
The golden one.......2005-08-30
The Peabody mysteries are the best series I have ever read. She makes you feel that you are right there seeing her life unfold. The mysteries of Egypt are astounding and funny. Great book.
Book Description
Bestselling author and expert on leadership John C. Maxwell shares the only rule that matters-in business and in life. How does a person judge what is ethical?Sometimes it's clear. In the past year or two, ethical lapses in corporate America have been well documented. But is it always easy to see where the line is in life? What's the standard? And can it work in all situations? John C. Max- well thinks it can. In THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS BUSINESS ETHICS, Maxwell shows how people can live with integrity by using the Golden Rule as their standard-regardless of religion, culture, or circumstances. Along the way, he delves into the desires of the human heart, reveals the five most common pitfalls that throw people off the ethical track, and teaches how to develop the Midas touch when it comes to personal integrity.

Save your money and go practice the Golden Rule.......2006-05-11
This more I think about this book, the more thought provoking it becomes. First, I find it amazing that anyone could take a belief that's widely known (practically a cliche), add nothing of substance to it, and actually write a book about it. Second, I find it even more amazing that it took 134 pages to make the Golden Rule applicable to business. Third, and perhaps the most amazing of all, is the fact that I actually spent my own hard earned money on this book. What amazing insights did I think would be uncovered?
I'll save you $9.72 (+s/h) and the 45 minutes it'll take you to read this. Here goes... Unless you were raised by wolves, it's pretty likely you've heard of the Golden Rule. Ok, now think about how this rule can be applied to all of your business dealings. That's it - you got it!
Whew! Now that you have an extra $9.72 in your pocket and 45 minutes of free time, go practice that Golden Rule by treating your kids/grandkids/neighbors to some ice cream.
Return to the Golden Rule.......2004-09-15
In a recent newspaper, in one day ... Enron chief pleads not guilty, Adelphia execs found guilty, no retrial in stock scandal ... and this was just the front page of the business section. On that same page, I noted the use of the phrase, "ethically amoral." Have we finally reached a point where we can construct such phrases? Corruption, moral relativism, the meaning of "is," have you had enough?
If you are looking for some insights into the problem and perhaps an alternative approach, here's your book, There's No Such Thing as "Business" Ethics. Maxwell writes, "...There's only ethics." Maxwell is right, and through interesting stories and common sense he argues for the adoption of the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
I read this book in hopes to validate my own research for my book, Swapping Lies! I felt that perhaps my call for a return of honor to the workplace was a bit too much, too naive. I was surprised to read that I am not the only one who feels this way. Maxwell is calling for the Golden Rule! Many will consider the Golden Rule a bit naïve in today's world, yet it is principle that successfully guides us in our business endeavors. A principled and focused leader is not naïve. In fact they are a constant source of strength and confidence to all. Spend just an hour to read this book. It may change you and your company.
Golden Rule as the General Guideline for Ethics.......2004-04-15
Book Overview:
This is a motivating, short, and easy to read book that tries to persuade the reader to adopt and apply the Golden Rule to their life as the ethical standard. Although the title of this book could mislead and create the wrong impression that it is intended to be read by businesspersons, this book can be used by anyone, since the general purpose is to apply the Golden Rule not only to the business environment but also to the personal life of the readers.
The book will generate great results and deep impact in the life of those persons, whom regardless of their social status or occupation, find themselves lost or disoriented regarding to their ethics standards. Throughout examples and real life stories in several aspects, the author illustrates his points and creates consciousness among the readers. At the end of each of the seven chapters, readers will find four to six straightforward questions that will help them look inside themselves and reflect what they have just read.
The author starts the book by citing ethical issues that have been creating concern in our society. Afterward, he focuses in the benefits and the importance of the Golden Rule. Subsequently, readers will find valuable tips of how to start thinking and applying this concept, which give introduction to other concept known as character. In chapter 5, the book encloses five factors that are considered to be the deceivers for people to follow an appropriate ethic path. Later, in the following chapter, the Dr. John C. Maxwell persuades readers to follow eight of his suggestions of how people can develop strong character in order to pursue golden opportunities. Finally, the author invites the readers to pursue the Golden Rule instead of the "Real Gold" by adopting five practices.
The Golden Rule works, This Book Falls Short.......2004-03-02
The application of the Golden Rule to our everyday lives is something that we can all agree is good. John Maxwell does a good job or defining the golden rule, its worldwide acceptance, and how we can apply it to our everyday. It was more like a walk down memory lane; to a time when a teacher or mentor first explained the concept to us. However I do have a few concerns with Mr. Maxwell's book. First there might need to be a better job at researching Fletcher thoughts on Relativism...in his book he labels Fletcher as the father of mordern day Realativism...quoting (or rather misquoting) Fletcher's statement that love can justify anything. I am in not postition to defend Fletcher, for I am not that familiar with his work, however he does not just use the term love. Rather he uses the term Agape Love, coming from the ancient Greek...the highest and purest form of love...one that God would have for us, a term any minister or pastor of the Christian Faith would know very well. Second after page 86 the book get repediative and seems to get off track. This links to my last issue with the book and why it gets a bit off track, as it turns into an advertisement for Mr. Maxwell's corporation, the last several pages are nothing but adverstisements asking you to visit their web site for free character quiz and then taking you down a road of Buy...buy...buy our products. Not what I expected and was somewhat disappointed. In short taking some know concepts, putting a somewhat of a new spin on them and then publishing to add another book to the list of those authored. Part of the disappointment is that I know this book could be better.
A Good Reminder.......2003-12-05
Being in sales I have noticed something over the years. Some of the great sales training programs and literature always seem to stress integrity. For example, "Always follow up when you say you will." However, they also advocate all sorts of little white lies in dealing with customers and prospects in order to get your foot in the door. This is exactly the kind of "ethics" that John Maxwell is taking on in this book.
It is refreshing to have Maxwell remind us that integrity goes much deeper than what is legal. His thesis is that a form of the Golden Rule, (Do unto to others, as you would have them do unto you,) is the only way to make tough, ethical decisions in any area of your life.
One of the problems I had was that the book really is geared towards leaders of companies, and doesn't address what you are to do if you are caught in a situation where you really don't have any power over the decisions of the company, but you are forced to execute those decisions, even if they are unethical. He praises whistle-blowers, but he doesn't seem to openly advocate the practice.
To his credit, Maxwell does state that using the Golden Rule will not always bring you success, but he states it as a kind of afterthought. His example of a high school football coach benching his players for underage drinking and then losing the big game because of their absence is hard to apply to a real life busniness situation. Having a tough sales deal on the line that can make or break the company and mean that you or people you work with or work under will lose their jobs, or their bonuses can be a little more stressful and make white lies, (especially when they are advocated by the higher-ups,) seem more inconsequential. And please understand that I am not saying that it makes them more right.
Like most of Maxwell's books it lays out some great food for thought and it really will help you to think about your actions and how you conduct yourself. However, also like Maxwell's other books, it doesn't give you a clear roadmap of how to succeed in this area.

An originally series of potenial proportians........2005-09-07
Originally, I read part 2 of this series first. When I first read this book I had to re-read part 2 again. I say in it self that each book can stand alone, that's what part two did for me. This is the humble but aristocratic orgins of who we call the golden one. Ampris born a slave, stolen from her mother & brought up in the ways of the privilige Viis. The King of the Viis or the Kaa, his daughter wanted Ampris as her pet. As Ampris grows up she come across with conflicts with her own identity and her place in society. As the book continues she feels she is just more than a pet & more of a slave. Later, she crosses path with another character of the book Elrabin is also shown as a seperate story. Eventually, when they end up meeting in the end which somehow, in part two, thier friendship is very crucial & neccessary to the series.
I've read the other reviews of how people got confuse with the Lucasfilm logo thinking its a Star Wars book. I always saw the logo and never got any confusion thinking it has something to do with Star Wars. Lucasfilms has done alot more than just Star Wars and this series prove it can go outside the Star Wars Universe. This series is very entertaining and originally in my book. I find it rare that some books like all the books in this series get any type of attention which I believe it should. This is an excellent read. Also, it's excellent find if anyone come across with any of the books in this awesome triology. Deborah Chester is an awesome writer and I'm looking foward to read more books by her.
Not George Orwell, not George Lucas, but still good.......2004-10-21
This book could turn some off by the chincy cover and meoldramatic clichéd back. However, the book is nothing of the sorts. It's a great read, and you'll be able to gobble it up quickly.
Regardles of the LucasFilm's brand, it has nothing to do with Star Wars, and the only resemblence is that it's Science Fantasy. The characters are incredibly well-drawn, and if you react to the book the same way I will, you'll want to keep reading.
The plot moves quickly, and is really two plots, because it follows the lives of two characters who don't meet until the end of the book. One, Elrabin, is a poor, homeless street thief who runs away from home at the age of seven, and Ampris, a member of a race deemed subhuman by the Viis Empire (the badasses of the book) who is bought out of poverty and into royalty to be the pet of the Emperor's daughter. So, a nice ying and yang scenario is set up.
This book is really a medophor I think for the stupidity of biggotry and class distinction in society, but it's still a fun, light read. Buy this book knowing that it's not an importan piece of Science Fiction literature, but knowing you'll have a good time.
Once in a great while.......2001-11-06
a book comes along that really inspires you... to vomit. Of the many books of sci-fi schlock I've poured through in my lifetime, this one is one of the worst. The characters are rarely interesting and the plot seems thin and in the end of this book, rushed. It seems by the 170th page of boring melodrama the author was in such a hurry to cut it short to fufill "trilogy" requirements she railroaded the characters into confusing and counter-intuitive behavior. I re-read the last part of the book to make sure I wasn't missing anything, and I wasn't. I haven't bothered to read the next two books in the saga. Usually, a first installment of a saga is supposed to grip you, not repulse you. And this did such a wonderful job of repulsing me I refused to even continue with the series. Instead, I reread "Dune" and found my faith in sci-fi writing restored.
One of the worst books I've ever read.......2001-10-21
I am an avid fan of fantasy and sci-fi, and when I noticed this book on the shelf at the local book store, I was interested enough to buy it. The first book in the trilogy, "The Golden One", doesn't really let one know how bad the writing is going to get. I give it one star simply because it isn't particularly well-written, and the storyline is transparently bland. It is obviously intended to hook the customer into buying the whole trilogy, which only goes downhill from the beginning. The really sad thing is that there was a lot of potential to make this interesting, but the characters, instead of developing, become more and more one-dimensional as the story progresses. The conversations and thought-processes of the characters could have been written by a fourth-grade B student. By the end of the third book, I was so disgusted and impatient to simply be done with it, that I had to force myself to read it through to the end instead of tossing it into a garbage can. I won't give away any parts of the story, just in case someonee is foolish enough to buy this stinker, but be forewarned: the author becomes so pedantic towards the end that there can be absolutely no doubt, at all, not even the tiniest, smallest, most miniscule bit of doubt, that the lead character, Ampris, is a "tragically noble heroine who just wants to believe the best in others no matter how many times they disappoint her". Or that everyone else in the books, with the exception of her best friend, is a despicable, self-centered, back-stabbing excuse for a (sorry, can't use the word "human", so insert your own noun, here).
This series, in conclusion, is an utterly pathetic attempt at writing, that starts out mediocre and eventually becomes simply abominable. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON IT!
An Absolute Favorite.......2000-12-28
This is one of those creations that comes along every so often and blows you away. The author uses characters as diverse and fascinating as the backgrounds they come from: Ampris is an Aaroun and the heroine of the trilogy, who begins her life as both abiru slave (abiru is the word the Viis use for all other races) as well as pampered pet and best friend too the Viis princess. She is later to play a major part in the overthrowing of the tyrannical Viis empire - Isrei is the spoiled Viis princess to whom Ampris is both pet and cherished friend, and who will later become ruler of the Viis empire - Finally there's Elrabin, a young Kelth who learns about growing up on the streets the hard way, and who will later join Ampris in the fight of her life. Their story is set in a captivating world unlike any other, and the plot that brings their lives together is an inspiring story about a struggle for freedom. If you are the least bit interested in science-fiction, or even if you're not, this book is sure to make a lasting impression.

The eagerly awaited continuation
of HOMECOMING and THE FARTHER SHORE!
Captain Chakotay is ready to prove himself as the new commanding officer of the Starship Voyager -- but skeptics back at Starfleet Command are watching him closely for any sign that he will revert to his renegade Maquis ways. His first mission as captain, to transport a group of displaced colonists back to their home planet of Loran II, seems easy enough: make sure the planet is safe for colonization, unload the settlers, and head back to Earth. He even has an extra reason to enjoy the trip -- his sister, Sekaya, has joined the mission as a spiritual advisor to the gentle, peace-loving colonists.
But when the crew arrives at Loran II, they discover a mysterious storm, an ominously deserted settlement -- and a hidden threat from Chakotay's past that could destroy them all. Will Chakotay's first mission as captain of Voyager also be his last?

The journey continues.......2007-01-30
I've been a fan of Voyager since the begining, and am glad to see that it doesn't end here, Voyager will continue on in some form or rather. Would love to see a Voyager movie in the distant future as there is the possiblity.
Anyway the book was fantastic continuing on from a story from the 2nd season, this sees Chakotay experiening pieces from the past as well as experincing challanges as USS Voyager's newly appointed captain. All I can say id this id good, you have to read this to find out more. Can't wait for book 2
Surprise Find.......2006-11-09
I found this book on the returns trolley at my local library and decided to borrow it for a quick read.
It delivered a quick read I had chewed through it in a couple of days.
Having not had the opportunity to read the previous homecoming books was no impediment to my understanding and enjoyment of this story.
I liked revisiting old Voyager characters and meeting new ones, but my beef with the book is that it didn't come to a very satisfactory conclusion.
I was about 12 pages out from the end when I realized that there were too few pages for the book to reach the climax that it took way too long building up to.
I don't like cliff hanger endings and this book ended on one which, whilst it made me keen to return to my library in search of book two also pissed this aspiring novelist right off as having broken one of the cardinal rules of writing ie "finish what you started!"
A good one to slip in your suitcase for a weekend away, otherwise.
Much better than Homecoming.......2006-10-10
Like the new Star Trek Titan novels, our other favourite First Officer gets a well-deserved promotion to Captain of USS Voyager. And brings along plenty of old and new interesting characters for the ride. We are introduced to Chakotay's sister Sekaya - and congratulations to whomever chose Sekaya's portrait on the book's front cover - yowsers! Apart from Chakotay, the spotlight is also focused on Dr. Jarem Kaz, the new Trill Chief Medical Officer, who has quite a few secrets of his own he needs to deal with. Also interesting and believable is the unresolved tension between the old Voyager crew and the veterans of the Dominion War. This kind of interpersonal conflict is much more believable than the conspiracy-fuelled actions of the previous Homecoming duology.
The first half- to three-quarters of the book is revisiting old characters and introducing new ones. Thats fine by me, as Christie Golden has a much more confident grasp of the characters by now. The result is a much better written book with more believable character motivations than what transpired in Homecoming. I still didn't enjoy these as much as the Star Trek Titan novels, but its still worth a read to revisit old friends. And I hope to see more adventures of the new Voyager in the future.
Post VoyagerNovel.......2006-08-13
Though I haven't gotten to read it yet I am very happy that this series of novels taks place AFTER Voyager's return to the Delta Quadrant. I always thought a movie should be made but a series in books is just fine.
ST: Voyager, Spirit Walk, Book 1, Old Wounds.......2006-08-05
Star Trek: Voyager, Spirit Walk, Book 1, Old Wounds written by Christie Golden is a continuation of the Voyager re-launch series and it is a wonderful adventure, indeed.
Golden takes the reader forward in this Voyager series book and catapultes the reader forward in the continuing story. The book takes off where the other re-launch seriers books have left off, but it is not necessary to read them to enjoy this story. Golden does a good job with this story to further this Voyager adventure. Captain Janeway is now an Admiril with Starfleet and fights for Chakotay to be Voyager's next Captain and she is successful.
"Old Wounds" is the first Voyager adventure with Chakotay as its new Captain, but he is being watched by Starfleet Command closely. All of the characters from Voyagers past play a roll in this book to keep the reader stable in the Voyager storyline, but Golden adds new characters to the Voyager compliment as well as the new refit of Voyager itself.
Golden uses "Old WOunds" as an introduction for new characters and sets the story for things to come as the reader progresses through the story. The set-up is told well and sets the mood for the book. Things heat up as Voyager reaches the planet of Loren II, the former home of the colonists that had to leave due to Loren II being ceded to the Cardassians during the Dominion War. But when the crew arrives at Loren II, things are not what they seem and a mystery develops and makes the story intriguing with a sprinkle of mystery.
"Old Wounds" brings the realm of the spirit world to the fore front, making for some interesting reading and setting the story's tone. "Old Wounds" is a tale that the reader will enjoy very much. There's not much action in this first story, but it sets the tenor for the series and you get really fimilar whin the characters, so the characterization is done well.
I enjoyed "Old Wounds" as a story told well with excellent characterization, so I gave this book a solid five stars for that reason. I'm looking forward to the second book in this series "Enemy of my Enemy" to carry to story to its conclusion. There is a cliff-hanger of an ending in "Old Wounds" making the reader want to get the second book.
Book Description
The life of civil rights leader Daisy Bates is vividly detailed in this stirring new biography by an acclaimed husband-wife team. Throughout her life, Daisy Bates worked tirelessly for civil rights as an activist, journalist, and organizer. She first captured national attention as the mentor of the nine black students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock in 1957. During this crisis President Dwight Eisenhower was forced to use federal troops to insure the admission of the students, who became known as the Little Rock Nine. In 1999, just hours after her funeral, President Bill Clinton bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal on the Little Rock Nine, and two years later Daisy Bates was honored by a state holiday in Arkansas. In this noteworthy companion to their other distinguished biographies of African Americans, Dennis and Judith Fradin have drawn upon a trove of archival material including papers, correspondence, and photographs of her life and work. They also interviewed some of her living relatives and members of the Little Rock Nine. The result is a compelling, inspiring book about the courage and determination of one woman in the face of prejudice and intolerance. Endnotes, bibliography, index.

A Must Read.......2006-04-04
I feel that joint writers Judith Bloom Fradin and Dennis Brindell Fradin did an excellent job with the writing and pictures exhibited in The Power of One: Daisy Bates and the Little Rock Nine. It's hard to believe that the demand for integrated schools occurred less than a century ago. The novel depicts civil rights activist Daisy Bates and her quest to integrate the public schools of Arkansas during the late 1950s and early 1960s. She stood behind the nine African American students who our nation dubbed the "Little Rock Nine." The book provides pictures of Daisy's life including eye opening shots of the abuse the nine students as well as Diasy herself endured from Little Rock's public just to gain equal opportunity to education. Readers will become inspired by and appreciative of Daisy's work.

KNOCKIN' ON EVIL'S DOOR
Werewolves. Trolls. Sea Monsters. Rain of toads. Skyquakes. Sunnydale is being besieged by dark forces. But even with Buffy providing her unique style of damage control while Giles is hospitalized out of town, it's more than one Slayer can handle -- especially since the abominations are coming from a centuries-old portal through time and space.
Somehow, the hell-hole must be found and corked at its source. For Buffy, Angel, and the rest of her gang, that means a road trip to Boston where an ailing Gatekeeper resides over a supernatural mansion that has been, until recently, holding the world's worst monsters at bay. Once there, Buffy discovers the catastrophic truth: the magical structure houses thousands of rooms, all of which are doorways to limbo's "ghost roads," and all of which may bring her face-to-face with the most nefarious forces in hell and on earth -- forces bent on horrific plans far worse than the Slayer ever imagined.

A Road Trip for 'Buffy' and the Scooby Gang.......2005-09-22
Sunnydale is known to be situated right upon the Hellmouth, so it's not a big surprise when demons of all sorts start piling into the small town. But when a collection of trolls, sea monsters, werewolves, toads, skyquakes, and numerous other strange things - stranger than normal things - begin infiltrating Sunnydale, Buffy knows that something isn't quite right. And with Giles hospitalized over three-thousand miles away, Buffy knows that it's more than one Slayer can handle. Especially when each ugly is coming through an old portal from centuries ago, through time and space. Buffy knows that the hell-hole must be found and corked ASAP, which means that Buffy, Angel, and the rest of the Scooby Gang are headed to Boston to meet up with the Gatekeeper. However, once there, Buffy finds that the supernatural mansion that the Gatekeeper reigns over, is home to thousands of rooms, all of which are entrances to so-called "ghost roads," that could bring Buffy face-to-face with some of the most evil beings on earth. Evil beings who are dying to teach the Slayer a lesson.
As a huge BUFFY fan, and avid reader of all things Slayer-ific, I discovered years ago that Christopher Golden and Nancy Holder are, without a doubt, the best BUFFY writers out there. So when I stumbled across THE GATEKEEPER TRILOGY, I knew that I would adore all three books. While I have only read OUT OF THE MADHOUSE - so far - I can tell you that it is, by far, one of the best BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER novels to date. The action-packed novel is filled with emotional reunions between the living and the dead upon the ghost roads, as well as the introduction of numerous new creatures looking to wreak havoc on the Slayer, her pals, and the entire world. With a cliff-hanger that will send any reader on a quest for the sequel GHOST ROADS, OUT OF THE MADHOUSE, is, without a doubt, a must read for all BUFFY fans.

REVIEW
Out of the Madhouse introduces two major settings in the Buffy mythos. The first is the Gatehouse, a huge, labyrinthine, mystical mansion in Boston that prevents all manner of monsters from escaping into the world. The second is the Ghost Roads, an ethereal, limbo-like place where the souls of the dead walk until the time has come to pass onto a higher (or presumably, lower) plane. These two elements are connected in a straightforward way in the first book of the Gatekeeper Trilogy: the Gatehouse is falling apart, allowing creatures to roam free; and only by travelling the Ghost Roads can Buffy, et al. rebuild the mansion's defences. Along the way are ancient 16th Century Italian intrigue, a new cult called the Sons of Entropy, and a plot to murder Watchers.
Giles steals the spotlight in the first part of the book, as we get to see him out of his usual element. In a well-written scene, he attends the American Library Association convention in New York and becomes smitten with a fellow librarian. Unfortunately, poor Giles ends up with the required nasty bump in the noggin & his role diminishes in subsequent chapters. Buffy and gang fight several escaped monsters, end up in Boston at the Gatehouse, and eventually travel through the Ghost Roads. An exciting conclusion foreshadows the end of Season Four & sets up the next book in the trilogy.
Holder & Golden do an excellent job portraying our heroes' dialogue and personalities. Scenes worth special mention include: Buffy & friends angsting over whether they'll separate after high school; rivals Angel & Xander teaming up like the first act in a buddy-cop movie to kill a troll; and Willow & Angel exploring the remnants of the frat house seen in Reptile Boy. The only downside is that some of the historical flashbacks are a bit slow moving and a scene where Angel tortures a human with Willow and Oz watching, seemingly unconcerned, is rather disturbing. On the whole, however, Out of the Madhouse is an excellent first book in the trilogy.

punch! kick! punch!.......2004-03-19
One of the things I love most about Buffy as a whole, is character development. This book was so busy with endless action sequences, that the character's personalities were largely ignored.
When the book stops for emotional moments it's hard to care, because the character's have all become cardboard cut-out's of themselves.
I'll go ahead & read the next one- I'm hoping that Golden & Holder will let up a bit on the constant barrage of battle- it gets tedious after awhile.
Proceed with caution.
1st Book is a tad confusing and slow.......2003-04-17
Like I said above, the first book is slow and confusing. However near the end of the book things really REALLY picked up, and I finished it and the other 2 in less than a week and a half!! The series rocks!! Guess what happens to Xander?? ;)
I'm shocked by all these great reviews.......2002-06-28
I always read fanfiction but shied away from buying these sorts of books. I read so much ..... fanfic to find the gems, but it's free and I really wasn't interested in paying to read something like that. But *everyone* I knew in the Buffy fandom recommended this trilogy as the *best* of the Buffy books. So I immediately splurged on the whole trilogy (figuring once I started, I'd want to read them all).
Boy was that a waste of money.
I'm an avid reader of all types of books, and yet this book bored me to tears. The characters were all off. While I could sometimes believe their actions, I never believed their thoughts or their words. Worst of all though, the writing was atrocious. I could have written better than this.
This book was so terrible that the other two still collect dust on my shelf. They will probably stay there for a long time, because I won't be giving anyone else these books for fear they might read them and blame me. I read almost anything available to me, so for something to turn me off this much, it has got to be pretty horribly written. If this really is the best Buffy novel, it will be my first and my last. I'm now afraid to try any of the others.
Book Description
A little community in South Africa, God's Golden Acre, is home to many orphaned children-mostly due to the AIDS pandemic. Heather and Patrick Reynolds care for these children; their story is one of ministering selflessly in the name of Christ.

Wonderful and spirit lifting!!!.......2007-10-09
This a very powerful and wonderful story. Heather is an Angel sent to care and love the orphans. She stood-up against all odds and survived the worst with her faith in God. God Bless Her and All The People she comes in contact with. Thank You Heather for sharing your story.
A truly extraordinary book that no one should miss........2006-05-16
God's Golden Acre
I'm a prolific, but exceedingly choosy reader. I'm not one to jump all around every book I read, shaking my tamborine!
This book, however, proved its value with the first few words. It is a very rare book that slows my automatically quick reading down, in order to absorb every word. I thought I would breeze through this interesting book in an afternoon. Not so. Evening came, and I was deeply engrossed. The book was way beyond interesting. Mesmerising would be a better word.
I was on a journey through Heather's life. I was on a quest to find out what she found, in the dim African huts where sometimes children were dying. Sometimes alone. I was hungering to find out how she was going to be able to help - just one person against unimaginable odds.
All through, the story is told on a very upbeat note. Heather tells how she has learned to help a dying child in the best way possible. She tells how she manages to go on, with sick children and AIDS all around her. She tells it is a way that makes me want to leave my comfortable world, hop a plane, and swing in beside her, to help those children. She presents as a very real human being, like many of us. However, she follows God's call to spend her life helping helpless children, unlike most of us.
She has success stories too. Beautiful little faces surround her, full of health. Many color photos illustrate her book. Heather and her one-in-a-million husband love what they are doing. I am certain that God loves what they are doing. Any reader will be stunned, challenged, delighted, and unwilling to leave the book until it is finished.
I love this book! I'm going to buy copies, and send them to my best friends. You should take a long evening, and swim into this book. You will not come out the same.
