5 out of 5 stars Radical Amazement.......2007-06-01

"Radical Amazement" is amazing in itself as it shows how scripture and the Gospels with the new Cosmos Story compliment each other and are not at all incompatible. It is so very helpful for prayer.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Pleasureable Read!.......2006-06-01

As a student of the Universe Story and the New Cosmology, I have read many, many books and articles on the subject. This is by far, the most readable and entertaining, as well as thought provoking and imaginative that I have found. It is at the top of my Most Recommended List for anyone interested in this subject. Based on this volume, I look forward to future works by this author.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Road to Hope.......2006-03-30

For many years I have been reading about and exploring the evolutionary Universe with others, groping for words, searching for a language able to convey the magnitude and wonder of what we are discovering. As I began reading Radical Amazement I had the sense at once of a freshness of approach that delighted me. Here is someone who has done it! Judy has a wonderful gift for inviting people into this new way of seeing that is at once straightforward and inspiring, full of amazement and not at all threatening.'

5 out of 5 stars Bringing the unimaginable into focus........2006-03-19

As a scientist of more than 30 years and a lifelong spiritual traveler, I have always been aware of the incredible concordance of the ineffable experienced in both my physical reality and the Other. In Radical Amazement, the author smoothly and convincingly illumines the cohesiveness between modern theories of cosmology and theological reflection. Many readers, whether or not previously initiated into the quirkiness and mystery of the physical universe, will thank Judy Cannato for her deft and clear synthesis of this reality with the Reality that permeates and motivates all. Finally, and most importantly, we are led by the author's insights and questions for reflection to come to rest focused on the meaning behind our journey ... transformation. We are invited into the immenseness of our own possibilities, to move from where we are to the outer boundaries of what we can become. Thanks, Judy, for your effort and your fidelity to your calling. We look forward to your continuing contribution to our radical transformation. -Br. Harry N. Finkbone, OSL, OblSB

4 out of 5 stars truly a good jumping on point!.......2007-08-26

now most of us x-fans remember when grant morrison took over this title at the turn of the century, breaking the x-men out of the costumes, making them darker, and grittier, which in turn became the astonishing x men. but out of the reload event after he left(yes folks, this book during his run was THE center of the x-universe) most of the books underwent many changes. there really havent been that many trades from this book since morrison's run, and marvel decided to collect the trades from both x titles this summer and made the best. this book shows what is left of the adult x men(which there arent that many) and cyclops designates rouge to lead a strike force taking out many of the remaining threats for mutants on earth. xavier on the other side of things in uncanny(he appears in supernovas, but isnt seen again because of the uncanny arc) while those x-men are in space leaving like 12 mutants in all to carry the x. while many peopeconsider both of these books to be subpar, they are actually some of the best books since morrison's run. bringing in a team of b league mutants not heard from in years, and collecting them in a beautiful hardcover leading up to the milestone 200th issue(ends at 199), this book is full of action and wit which many x-fans have been wanting for many years!

5 out of 5 stars X-Tremely interesting new direction.......2007-08-20

The X-Men seem to have been drifting along without a rudder, recycling familiar plots, Phoenix again and again, something about the stepford cuccoos or something but they've missed their mark, even the potentially interesting M-Day event didn't culminate into something greater then a really good idea. Now we have this series, I think that it's made great leaps forward, by inviting characters from all different places within the X-Men world to form a team led by Rogue. By not reusing Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm etc. but by focusing on some surprising characters such as Omega Sentinel and Lady Mastermind we're given the chance to experience the X-Men as they were originally concieved as a world in and of itself the continually evolves and adapts to dramatic changes in the world around the characters.
Also the artwork is top-notch in this series an interesting choice that nonetheless works for the series.

2 out of 5 stars Supremely disappointing.......2007-08-16

I love Mike Carey, I really do. The guy worked wonders over at Vertigo during his momumental runs on Hellblazer and Lucifer, but since he's come over to Marvel over the past few years, his work has been supremely disappointing to say the least. After scribing the underwhelming Ultimate Elektra and a so-so run on Ultimate Fantastic Four, Carey gets the job of writing X-Men, and once again crafts a disappointing tale. With Joss Whedon taking the big name X-Men members on an interstellar trip with Astonishing X-Men and Ed Brubaker taking lower-tier members in a clash with the Shi'ar Empire, Carey gets the task of picking up the pieces of the X-Men members with Supernovas, which finds Rogue, Cable, Iceman, Mystique, Northstar, Aurora, and a double dealing Sabretooth among others taking on the mysterious Pandemic and the Children of the Vault. Give credit to Carey for trying to come up with some new ideas for the X-Men mythos, as well as trying to add some new dimensions to the Rogue/Mystique relationship, but as a whole, Supernovas falls flat on it's face. Not to mention that the conclusion of the book doesn't really wrap anything up, and instead leaves the door open for the upcoming Endangered Species storyarc from Carey, which picls up where Supernovas leaves off. Veteran X-Men artist Chris Bachalo and Humberto Ramos provide the art, and I have never been a fan of Bachalo's work before, and he doesn't do anything to redeem himself here, and Ramos' work looks strikingly similar to Bachalo's at spots as well. That being said, Supernovas may be worth a look for longtime X-Men fans, but in the end, this hardcover collection is better left on the shelf.

Book Description

"Dreams are hopeless aspirations, inhopes of coming true, believe in yourself, the rest is up to me and you."
-- "Waterfalls"

Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas came together in Atlanta, Georgia, in the early 1990s to form TLC, a group that blended hip-hop, dance, and R&B music so successfully that it went on to be one of the bestselling female groups of all time.

This is the story of how Lisa Lopes, the self-proclaimed "crazy" member of TLC, rose above her difficult childhood to attain superstardom. With her funky raps and her vivacious personality, Lisa pursued her dreams and became known as the most energetic member of TLC, who went on to pave the way for many female groups that followed.

3 out of 5 stars Supernova .......2005-05-09

This book was good. However as some one mentioned the author did make some mistakes. She left out two of Lisa's guest appearances in the back of the book. 1997 Nothing to Lose Soundtrack - "Not Tonight(remix)"- Angie Martinez, Lil' Kim, Da Brat, Left Eye and Missy Elliot. I don't know how you miss that record since it was such a hit. Not only that she missed another guest song from 1997 off of Will Smith's cd "Big Willie Style". The fifteenth song was titled "Big Willie Style" and it featured Left Eye. I was very surprised that the author missed these important songs. I mean they were major songs that Left Eye did , I don't know how she missed them while doing her research which leaves me to believe that she is not a Hip-Hop & R+B fan, cuz I'm sure a lot of people know about these songs.

2 out of 5 stars Not So Good.......2003-06-16

I would stay away from this book. This book is very inaccurate, and it is poorly written. "Everybody knows that Lisa Lopes moved to Atlanta by herself, and that she met T-boz through Rico Wade not some nightclub. If you want to know the real story about Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes get the VH1 Behind The Music "TLC" and the Left Eye Tribute in S2S magazine.

4 out of 5 stars In loving memory of a supernova.......2003-02-21

I ordered two books recently, one being Aaliyah: an R&B princess in words and pictures and the other Lisa Lopes: The life of a supernova. I have to say that the latter surpasses the first. While Aaliyah's biography by Kelly Kenyatta was somewhat childish and too fairy-tale-like, Lisa's, on the other hand, is a superb and brilliant tribute to the talented artist and beautiful person she was. Unlike Kelly Kenyatta, who seems to pretend that Aaliyah was absolutely perfect, Nancy Krulik does not try to hide Lisa's weaknesses from the reader. We all knew she made several mistakes in her life, like burning down her boyfriend's mansion, and that she had drinking problems. But all this didn't make her a less good and caring person. In spite of her crazy side, feuds with the other TLC members and all, we truely feel that Lisa was searching for inner peace. Sadly, before she passed away, she seemed to had found it.
RIP, Left Eye.

5 out of 5 stars More Than A Supanova, But Satisfying.......2002-10-28

When I saw this book in the store I froze. I had to have it!! I read it and even though not all of it is accurate its satisfying! Lisa I believe would be very proud of this book. It shows her for the woman she was and even though her, T-Boz, & Chilli had their differences this book shows just how inseperable they were. A satisfying tribute to a true Supanova!

RIP Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes

1 out of 5 stars Horrendous piece of claptrap.......2007-02-24

Lyndon Ashmore is a charlatan and an amateur when it comes to evaluating the ideas of modern science. His book is full of errors and ignores the modern scientific discoveries that have made the Big Bang paradigm such a successful framework. Don't waste your money or time on this.

5 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2007-01-02

Not only a compelling case, but a great read. Ashmore provides entertaining bios anectdotes and info on his way to explaining where the Big Bang movement came from and why the evidence doesn't support it. He provides a simpler, better, more feasible explanation for redshift and the cmb and does so in language any high school grad can easily understand.

5 out of 5 stars Big Bang is a squid.......2006-11-10

Ashmore's book is a very readable simple exposition as to why the Big Bang is a squid. Besides the very well written exposition of the technical issues he provides a multiplicity of fascinating background stories about the major contributors to astrophysics. You'll enjoy this book even if you are committed to the BB.

Book Description

Astronomers believe that a supernova is a massive explosion signaling the death of a star, causing a cosmic recycling of the chemical elements and leaving behind a pulsar, black hole, or nothing at all. In an engaging story of the life cycles of stars, Laurence Marschall tells how early astronomers identified supernovae, and how later scientists came to their current understanding, piecing together observations and historical accounts to form a theory, which was tested by intensive study of SN 1987A, the brightest supernova since 1006. He has revised and updated The Supernova Story to include all the latest developments concerning SN 1987A, which astronomers still watch for possible aftershocks, as well as SN 1993J, the spectacular new event in the cosmic laboratory.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview about Supernovae, though its from 1988.......1998-04-19

This book brings a good overview to the reader, how Supernovae brings their information to our planet and how they develop with all the basics of astrophysics an cosmology needed to understand. It was published first in 1988 but a 2. series came out in 1994. So you can't find the newest informations on Supernovae.

Found the book to be inspirational to my own writing. A good introduction to the lay person, and with healthy detail for the versed.

    Book Description

Nearly one half of the point-like gamma-ray sources detected by EGRET instrument of the late Compton satellite are still defeating our attempts at identifying them. To establish the origin and nature of these enigmatic sources has become a major problem of current high-energy astrophysics. The second workshop on Multiwavelength Approach to Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources intends to shed new and fresh light on the problem of the nature of the unidentified gamma-ray sources. The proceedings contain 46 contributed papers in this subject, which cover theoretical models on gamma-ray sources as well as the best multiwavelength strategies for the identification of the promising candidates. The topics of this conference also include energetic phenomena occurring both in galactic and extragalactic scenarios, phenomena that might lead to the appearance of what we have called high-energy unidentified sources. The book will be of interest for all active researchers in the high-energy astrophysics and related research areas as well as for scientists and graduate students interested in understanding the recent progress in high-energy astrophysics.

For the biggest band to come out of England since the Beatles, here's the book that charts their incendiary rise to the top of the worldwide Pop charts. "Oasis" is a trip down Abbey Road in the '90s--a pop-fest for the masses, Johnny Rotten and the fabulous four hunkered down into two rowdy, infectious, sullen bards. 8 b&w photos.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful for serious fan; fully informative for new-comers.......1998-05-15

Let's face it. The story of the meteoric rise of Oasis and the sibbling drama surrounding the brothers Gallagher is both complicated and simple. Complicated, because how do you sift throught the tabloid haze, the drug hysteria, the fights, the break-ups and make-ups and make sense of it all? Simple, because this is what happens when the right band comes along with the perfect songs and the charasmatic force to make people desperately intrigued... yeah, it's a big explosion. This book follows just that logic and takes you along for the perfect ride through the Oasis universe. A little humour and a crisp narrative help as well. The hilarious photo captions are a bonus. Be here now...

5 out of 5 stars The Latest From the Sharpest Wit in Print.......1998-02-12

A real laugh and look at the absurdity of pop star life as only the Brits can do it. Documents the rise and rise of the the Gallagher boys and their infamous antics. Nice "behind the scenes" and tales of the mono-brow brothers' very entertaining bickering. One of my favorite authors. If you don't know his book "Generation Eccch" yet, read it for more sharp-witted criticism of pop icons of the '90s.

5 out of 5 stars Give this guy 160 pages, he'll give you a great story........1997-10-12

If you really wanna find out HOW Oasis became so big, this is the book for you. It tells it all, from the Gallagher's impressions on America, the world, and everything, to personal experiences. Provides a good laugh and is a great eye-opening-mouth-exploding-drooling experience. Only for devoted Oasis fans.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greates Oasis books that I have come across!.......1997-08-07

If you are a fan of the English rock band, Oasis, this is a MUST! This book gives you very rare information and is rather humorous at the same time. I actually laughed out loud more than once! The downside is, there are not many pictures along with it and it is a bit shorter than I would like. But...the few pictures that ARE in there are very Oasisesque. They bring out the band's real personality. If Liam and Noel have sparked a flame in you heart, or gotten you constantly humming "Wonderwall", you MUST check this book out

      5 out of 5 stars SCIENCE fiction!.......2006-03-15

Wow! Science fiction that is full of science! The best kind! I actually had this book on my shelf for a long time before I read it, as I was sort of expecting another sordid disaster novel. When I did read it, however, I wondered why I had waited so long.

5 out of 5 stars If you love "science-based" fiction, find this book!.......2004-02-05

I don't know why I've waited so long to praise this book; its one of my favorite reads. I got it several years ago, for a buck at a book outlet store. Which shows that with books, what you pay has very little relation to how much you enjoy it. I re-read it at least once a year.
The story is about what happens around the unfolding event of a nearby star (Sirius) going supernova. I thought the astronomy was very clearly explained. But its also a very human story of the reactions of some of the people this event touches, from the astronomer who first raises the possibility that the supernova might happen (only to be laughed at by senior scientists-a very realistic scene), to a young Japanese technician who finds out that EMP from the event might destroy Earth, to a world-weary psychiatrist who joins a millenial group called the Christ-Riders (who see in the supernova a harbinger of the end times).
In the novel, the supernova's light appears at Earth right around the millenium (year 2000), but that doesn't make the story obsolete--I think an event of this "magnitude" would cause cultish reactions in any year it happened. The human relationships are as well drawn as the science. I can't do it justice in a short review, so I will recommend it to anyone interested in hard-science fiction, or novels with millenial scenarios.
As presented in the book, the possibility of Sirius being unstable enough to go supernova is so convincing, that after every time I read it, I go do some research to see if that star really has changed over time (i.e., whether the premise could be true). And after reading it, for the next several days I'll look into the night sky and wonder if catastrophes have already happened out there, but their effects have yet to reach us here on Earth. In other words, the book causes you to think, for a long time after you read it. And thats my definition of a good book!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good!! Ten years out of print. Slightly technical........1997-07-21

The book gives a very interesting view of what may happen if Sirus B goes Supernova. The star is within 10 light years of earth. The individual making the prediction is a young astronomer who just obtained his P.Hd. Due to his young age, he is not taken very seriously. More discriptions were needed within the book reguarding the atmospheric effects of the supernova. The only discriptions given about the changes in the weather patterm was the statement such as "Storms were the result of the Supernova." There were also brief mentions of the unusualy cool days in parts of California. Also, there was a brief mention of icemelt and snowstorms in Antarctica. Book also includes a rogue religious cult bent on distroying L.A. after it is blasted by a Electro Magnetic Pulse from the supernova. Good book if you like to see L.A. and Tokyo burn. I still recommend it. Need some science background to understand small parts of it
