3 out of 5 stars okay but nothing to write home about.......2007-05-10

This story was just a bit too much for me to swallow. The characters were very well written, but the premise was too far-fetched. By a used copy if you want to complete the set.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating shape shifter romance.......2007-04-24

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Shape Shifter Lucaine "Luc" Herrick is desperate. His best friend's Halfling daughter is wasting away from cancer and does not half much time left. When rumor reaches the NY pack all the way from TX about a possible Halfling healer, Luc is sent to investigate. Once before he could not save someone he cared about from dying and he needs hope to keep him going. He will not fail this time. Even when the person he is looking for turns out to be his mate.

Samantha "Sam" Warren has the power to heal animals with only her touch but if this became common knowledge, she would be exploited for her gift. When a strange but compelling man shows up begging her assistance, as afraid as Sam is to reveal her ability, she can't bear to destroy his hope.

Someone or something else is in TX, giving the locals reason to believe there is a werewolf in town. Now Luc must explain to Sam what she is and why her gift is so important to their kind. But when someone makes it clear they want Sam for their own purposes, Luc must do whatever it takes to protect her, even if it means kidnapping her himself.

I loved the different spin Karen Whiddon puts on her Shape Shifter society, especially the novelty of the legendary Halfling Healers. What a brilliant way to distance Touch of the Wolf from the usual Shape Shifter concept. The idea of rare halflings using their power differently from other halflings and full Shifters out there is quite a novel concept and totally believable in this society. I also loved how Luc does not truly understand her gift... no one does... and we are educated right along with him as to the limits to Sam's abilities.

Luc is a true alpha wolf male. He is strong and powerful, unafraid of throwing his weight around when it's needed. Yet when he meets Sam, he melts into a kind and gentle giant when he's with her. Yet the true instincts of a predator never leave him, as is evidenced by the great lengths he goes to in protecting Sam, not caring what she or anyone else thinks. She is his Mate and nothing can stop him from doing whatever it takes to keep her safe.

The mystery of the stranger in TX and their purpose there is very well done. This adds another tension laced thread to the greater tale and Luc's purposes for being in TX at all. When it was revealed who the stranger is and what they want, I was shocked at the turn of events and what follows.

Touch of the Wolf was my first foray into the supernatural world of Karen Whiddon's The Pack and is sure not to be my last. I was immediately sucked in to the story, eagerly turning pages and unwilling to stop reading even for a minute. Too bad my real life interfered with that annoying thing called a job... I was fascinated with the society Whiddon has created, in all its complex glory and am eager to go back and read previous books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Suberb paranormal romance .......2007-03-11

Werewolves have the ability to heal themselves, but changelings (half-breed shifters) cannot and therefore need healers. In two generations of Pack births no new healer has been born and some like Lucaine Herrick think healers are a myth. His pack disagrees with his assessment; so when three year old Lucy suffers from an inoperable brain tumor, he is sent to Anniversary, Texas to see if Samantha Warren a Healer.

When he first sees Samantha, Lucaine is disgusted with his poor timing as he realizes she is his mate; he wants to escape and run like the wolf, but first he must fulfill the quest. Samantha is unaware that she is a Halfling who has the Healer's talent instead of the shifting trait. Luc tries to get Sam to admit she is a healer as he is convinced she might be the real thing, but she denies her "heritage" and having such ability. Another ailing Changeling needs Sam to save his life and he will do what it takes to force her to do so while Luc will risk his life to keep his mate safe.

This paranormal romance is filled with excitement, intrigue, tension, and danger as Karen Whiddon creates a fine tale of a believable sub-society surviving within the larger purebred human environs. Luc is a strong-willed male, who proves he is a perfect match for the feisty vulnerable heroine. However, it is Sam who brings plausibility to this entertaining werewolf romantic suspense as she struggles with her universe turned inside out when she learns werewolves and changelings exist.

This was another great read for me, i have most of them, that i got off of amazon of course, what can i say, paranormals are my thing, especially the shiftshapers. I loved this book

1 out of 5 stars could really state 1 star.......2007-08-06

Do not want to be cruel to an author, but this book was a waste of time. I did read it all, hoping against hope for something to grab my interest. Nothing did. No build up to a climactic scene, no real character development, I have nothing positive to say whatsoever. Characters thrown together to make a scene, with no real purpose. I am an avid reader or paranormal romance, and this was the second worst book I have ever encountered.

3 out of 5 stars She is a broken shape shifter on the run for her life........2007-04-27

She was the prosecution's chief witness against her ex-husband's drug cartel. She is now on the run for her life. Leo has guys everywhere, coast-to-coast. She has changed her name to Jewel Smith, colored her hair, left all credit cards behind, and tossed away her cell phone. She can live without any of it. However, she cannot survive much longer without shifting into her wolf form. Problem is that Leo did something to her; making her unable to shape shift.

Colton Reynolds lost his daughter two years ago because of drugs. When he learns who Jewel really is, Colton offers his help. In fact, he insists she needs him after someone cut the break lines on her car. Colton knows Jewel is ready to run again, but Leo would only pursue her.

Jewel wants desperately to trust Colton. Yet Jewel knows she has bad judgement when it comes to men. Besides, even if Jewel told Colton the truth about what she is, he would never believe her.

*** I found this to be a pretty good read for a road trip. I believe it would be best if read in the mountains, surrounded by woods, or at the beach, since the setting is around a lake. Nothing original within these pages. Nothing fascinating either. But no matter where you read it, you will be entertained as you take a walk on the wild side. ***

Jewel Smith has two deadly secrets. Hiding in a small town in Texas, she doesn't want anyone to recognize her as the ex-wife of Leo Licciardoni as his high profile legal case was news nationwide particulary when he vowed to kill her. Even more importantly, however, Jewel has to keep her identity as a shifter secret because no humans can know of her ability to change into a wolf. Jewel has another problem on her hands as she is currently unable to shift and if she doesn't shift soon, she will die. Reporter Colton Reynolds wants to help Jewel but will her secrets destroy their growing attraction for one another?

CRY OF THE WOLF is a superb foray into the world of the shifter. Karen Whiddon's twist involving a werewolf who can't shift is an interesting one and provides a different approach to the overall genre. Jewel's struggle with her inability to change adds depth to her character as she goes from acting like a victim to a survivor.

Karen Whiddon addresses a very powerful issue in CRY OF THE WOLF as she focuses on battered women. Leo has tried to shatter Jewel's spirit, just as he repeatedly broke her body. Jewel's trust in men is at a low point when she meets Colton, but luckily Colton is a very special man. The emotional impact of CRY OF THE WOLF is extremely potent and it is encouraging to see such a talented writer dare to address such a touchy subject as domestic violence.

CRY OF THE WOLF is spectacular! Karen Whiddon is quickly developing a reputation as a writer to keep an eye on in the paranormal genre. CRY OF THE WOLF is yet more proof that Karen Whiddon should be on any paranormal lover's auto-buy list.

Jewel Smith AKA Julie Licciardon is on the run from her husband Leo, a drug lord, who tortured her and gave her something that prevented her from turning into a wolf. Unless she can change she will die; if Leo escapes from prison or one of his minions finds her she will die regardless.

When she tries and fails to change, Jewel collapses. Reporter Colton Reynolds finds her unconscious and revives her. When he realizes who she is he admires because she turned in Leo; his former wife killed their daughter because she was dealing drugs. Jewel and Colton are attracted to one another, but she fears revealing to him she is a werewolf while he needs to uncover the secret she hides from him. After two failed attempts to kill her, he vows to keep her safe even if he dies doing so.

Karen Whiddon provides werewolf romance fans with an enthralling paranormal thriller that is filled with action and intrigue especially with enemies trying to eliminate the two protagonists. Readers will sympathize with Jewel for what she has put up with from a sadistic monster while hoping she can transform into a werewolf. The author cleverly handles spousal abuse inside an exhilarating tale.

Book Description

Germany's World War II U-boat fleet was a truly elite fighting force. The U-Boot Waffe represented the cream of Germany's naval personnel, and in terms of technology, training, tactics and combat successes, the German fleet was far superior to that of any other combatant nation. This book tells the complete story of the 'Grey Wolves' who harried the Allies' supply lines and came close to winning total victory for Hitler in Europe. The wartime development of the U-boat is traced from the Type I through to the Type XXI, and the experiences of typical U-boat crewmen, from recruitment to combat, are brought to life. Operational tactics are examined, and the massive bunkers that housed the U-boat fleet are described and illustrated.

Grossadmiral Karl Donitz, Commander-in-Chief, U-boats
'I was fascinated by the unique sense of comradeship, engenderd by sharing the same fate and hardship in the community of a U-boat crew in which everyone depended on everyone else and in which every man was an indispensable part of the whole. Surely every submariner has sensed in his heart the glow of the open sea, and the task entrusted to him, and felt as rich as a king, and would have traded places with no one.'

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wolfpack.......2007-02-14

The author put in a lot of research to produce this book and much of it is valid. However, when he says that Admiral Donitz tactic of staying on the surface and fighting attacking aircraft was ineffective I take issue with him. VP 205, my old squadron, lost three aircraft and crews in two weeks off Trinidad in the summer of 1943.

5 out of 5 stars uboat reference.......2005-08-19

since there is no review for this great book.. here goes.
this is only about uboats and deals with all uboat types
technically and their support structure and personel.
it does not deal much with individual boats but some time is spent on history and operations.
It is an excellent reference on uboat bases and bunkers.
the uboat crew and ranks are covered and weapons and tactics are detailed.
There are many photos and some illustrations that I would like to get prints of.
the pc uboat game silent hunter 3 is as good as its top ratings
indicate and it ties in well to this book.
the book is a great value for the serious military reader.

5 out of 5 stars Julie's Wolf Pack (Julie of the Wolves).......2007-05-07

I really liked all three of the books in the Julie series. I liked all the information they had about life in the Arctic Circle, and found these stories very believable. I liked learning about why dogs/wolves behave the way that they do. I would recommend these books to anyone. Hunter 10

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest wolf stories I've read in a long time........2007-04-29

This book seems as if it shows the life in a wolf pack. It has comedy, romance, drama, and action all in one book. It shows you how wolves communicate and what they sometimes do to keep each other alive. This book continues Julie's story, but in the eyes of Kapu. It shows how he struggles to keep his pack alive. He might be new to the whole "alpha male" thing, but he is a great leader.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2006-11-07

If you are ready for a great book, with wolves and their real life girl friend, then you will love Julie's Wolf Pack.
It is action packed with wolf fights and wars. Read this GREAT book to find out what happens to this wolf pack.

5 out of 5 stars It introduces a new kind of action, living action........2006-08-15

Amazing, heartwarming, magical, these are a few words to describe it. If you despise wolves, it will change you into a kid who wants to grow up to protect them. I am a wolf lover who stumbled apon this book. It introduces a new action living action. However, it's about wolves instead of people, yet it makes us know the truth, wolves and other animals ARE people. In the book you follow the alpha wolf, Kapu, through life. While you read, you learn about wolves. Good for kids 8-15. If you love it like I know you will, you should try books like The City of Ember, The Eragon trilogy, and Artimis Fowl. Enjoy a pleasent read.

5 out of 5 stars Fave Book.......2006-07-13

This is one of my favorite books. My favorite part in the book was when Uqaq (a captive-raised brought back to the wild wolf) gives birth to nine puppies but she runs away from them because she doesn't know how to be a mother. Then the nine puppies go looking for her and when they finally find her, they swarm around her and Uqaq runs with the puppies hot in pursuit. ^-^

This is a good book to read and I recommend all wolf lovers to read this book!

From the back:
She'd returned to her birthplace to expose her mother's killer. But in facing her hazy childhood memories, Brie Danzinger soon discovered a family she'd never know - and an undeniable attraction to enigmatic police chief Reed Hunter. Reed knew something that he wouldn't - or couldn't - tell her. Was it about her mother...or more personal?
Giving in to his yearning for Brie could mean her death. But when her questions stirred a sleeping killer, Reed couldn't keep his vow to stay away. His feelings had to take second place to protecting Brie - but could Reed save her from the shocking truth about herself?
My Thoughts:
There are so many things that were great in it! The curse, the fact that Brie didn't know her family history very well, the suspense, of course. Loved it, and I'd recommend it!

Behind the "Tarot Scenes" I am a Research Zoologist who reccomends this deck for tarot readings as the Wolfs' dependence upon the resources available to the Pack's survival adaptations in the open substrates of unfenced, protected National Park vast acreages of Pristine land. This feral canine Genus species' dependence survives as a Wolf community unit membership led by and held cohesively by an Alpha Male and Alpha Female much parallel to a Human community surviving under guiding influence of an Alpha Male/Female as an intact society unit. When the reader uses this Pack with the querents ,the resulting accuracies are astonishing nonetheless. I agree with the other reviewers while reccomending this Pack to be yours....

5 out of 5 stars awesome cards.......2006-10-30

I am sorry I can only give a score of 5 stars. I just love these cards. I was new to tarot when I purchased them. I read where they were easy to read and very positive. I thought they were set up like a regular tarot deck; the major arcana, the pips, and the court cards. How wrong I was. But I decided to try and work with them. I love these cards. (did I mention this already?) I have bought several decks for my friends and family. My daughter, my two best friends, even my 12 year old grandson has a deck, and I own 2 decks now. I have one put aside when the one I am using now wears out. I do readings for friends, and they will ask for a reading from the Wolf Pack. Quick and easy, and to the point.
There is no LWB with this deck, but you don't need it. Each card is numbered from 1-78. The thoughts of the scene are on the card. The colors of the cards seem to be done in colored pencil, which gives it such a simple look and feel, but you feel at home with them. They are not aggressive, and give very positive meanings. However, they also can give forewarnings, and are very much on the mark. After using these cards, I have learned to work with the numbers in the card for timing some readings. I believe anyone who receives a Wolf Pack Tarot Deck, will not be disappointed.

    Book Description

This book examines the relationship between the White House, in the person of its press secretary, and the press corps through a linguistic analysis of the language used by both sides. A corpus was compiled of around fifty press briefings from the late Clinton years. A wide range of topics are discussed from the Kosovo crisis to the Clinton-Lewinsky affair. br This work is highly original in demonstrating how concordance technology and the detailed linguistic evidence available in corpora can be used to study discourse features of text and the communicative strategies of speakers. It will be of vital interest to all linguists interested in corpus-based linguistics and pragmatics, as well as sociolinguists and students and scholars of communications, politics and the media.

4 out of 5 stars Diamond cuts diamond..........2005-01-30

and it took the Dragoons to nearly destroy the Dragoons. The ending is an inspiration though it's a twisted road to get there. You definitely have to read Wolves on the Border and Heir to the Dragon before you go to this one, the references will lose you completely. And yeah, I can't believe Zeta Battalion was that jacked up either.

Me, I am far more a 3027 kind of guy, pre-Clans, pre-Dark Age. I don't know when or if the Dragoons will ever resurface. But it's nice to know that for a time the red-trimmed black ruled every battlefield of the Inner Sphere.

    1 out of 5 stars A shocker.......2004-02-19

This is a terrible book. The civil war on Outreach between the factions of Wolf's Dragoons should have been thrilling. Instead, Charette made it boring. The characters were one-dimensional, and their actions frequently inexplicable. The plot was full of cliches, and many threads were never resolved. The source of conflict was obscure. The writing style was never any better than pedestrian. You needed a full history of Wolf's Dragoons (which I don't have access to) to make sense of a lot of the story. Even the illustrations were bad.
Frankly, "Field Manual: Mercenaries" is a more enjoyable read about Wolf's Dragoons, and that's not the way it should be.

    5 out of 5 stars Kickass Tactics.......2002-04-24

Charrette is a fantastic writer. He builds up the plot until it bursts with surprising plot twists and good characters

    5 out of 5 stars 'Mech's Galore.......2001-09-06

How much fun was that?! I havn't enjoyed a book that much since reading the field manual for my own brand spanking Mad Cat...
Though they could have done more with Zeta Battalion. Wasted their brilliance slightly...
Oh, by the way, anyone remember what Jamie Wolf's 'Mech was again?

5 out of 5 stars This one got me hooked!!.......2000-08-14

The BEST Battletech book that I've read to date. Started playing/reading Battletech in '93 and this was the first book and I've collected and read EVERY book.

It was hard to put this book down. It kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. This quality of writing is what other writers should strive for!! Not set word limits by the publishers.
