Book Description

Liz Williams is one of science fiction’s boldest new writers and this novel is one of her most profound speculations on freedom, love, and human destiny. On a distant world ruled by an alien race, humanity is enslaved, having forgotten its own past and condemned to have no future--until one woman is offered a choice that could restore humanity’s freedom.

The Poison Master

On the planet of Latent Emanation, humans are the lowest class, at the mercy of their mysterious alien rulers, the Lords of Night. But Alivet Dee, an alchemist, can’t help but question the Lords’ rule ever since her twin sister was taken to serve in their palace. Alivet saves every penny to pay her sister’s unbonding fee, but her plan is destroyed when one of her potions kills a wealthy client--and Alivet finds herself wanted for murder. Her only hope is the darkly attractive man who may have engineered her downfall but who still offers her a last chance of salvation.

A Poison Master from the planet Hathes, Arieth Mahedi Ghairen needs an alchemist of Alivet’s expertise to find the one drug that can take down the Lords--and free the universe from their rule. Sequestered in Ghairen’s fortress laboratory, lied to by both her new ally and his daughter’s enigmatic governess, Alivet doesn’t know whom to trust or where to turn for answers. But driven to undo her sister’s fate, Alivet races to hone her skills in time--even as time runs out.

4 out of 5 stars Takes a while to get going but very good.......2006-06-01

This was really good once it got going. It took maybe a third of the book before I was really engaged, but after that it was a page-turner. Alivet is an accomplished alchemist who comes from a world that is controlled by monsters whose secret police abuse the populice. Alivet's sister Inki is a prisoner in one of the palaces. When Alivet is accused of murder she has to trust a man she just met who calls himself a Poison Master and says he wants to help her free her sister. She travels to his world where she is kept virtually a prisoner in his home "for her own protection" while she helps him concoct a drug/poison that will take out the Lords of Night that rule her world. Meanwhile, she still doesn't know if she can trust him or if he is responsible for her murder accusation. Things are further complicated by conspirators who try to gain Alivet's help against the Poison Master, not to mention her own feelings of attraction to him despite fears about how he is treating his mysterious daughter.

There were a few bits of the writing that didn't work for me. The last page was a bit forced, and every chapter started with a storyline set in Elizabethan days that was the tale of how these people came to be under the rule of the Lords of Night. That story was only rarely engaging and most of the time I was annoyed at it for pulling me out of the main plot. I wish the author had done without it or included it in some other way if she wanted us to know what had happened.

Still, I would recommend this book, sure.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting tale.......2005-12-22

This is the story of Alivet Dee, an alchemist who lives on a planet where humans are oppressed by the mysterious Night Lords. Alivet is struggling to rescue her sister, who has been impressed as a slave by the Lords, but discovers a possible chamce to do much more when she is approached by Gahiren, a Poison Master from another world, who has a plan to end the rule of the Night Lords permanently. Alivet is plunged into an atmosphere of mystery and suspicion, never sure who she can trust.

It's a good story, and written nicely. Williams has used alchemy and Kabbalah as a background for the novel, creating an environment that mixes elements of fantasy and science fiction.

An interweaved story focuses on John Dee, a real Elizabethan alchemist. The story gives added background, but isn't genuinely essential for the main story.

4 out of 5 stars refreshingly different.......2005-02-12

Liz Williams has managed to produce a novel that is a mix of fantasy and sci-fi and works on both fronts. Set on the world of Latent Emanations, the story revolves around the alchemist Alivet. Her sister has been taken by the Lords of the Night and Alivet's mission is to find and help her.
After she is framed for murder, Alivet finds herself on the run, helped by the mysterious 'Poison Master' who seems to have plans of his own for the young alchemist. Having taken her to his own world, the poison master has Alivet kept in his own house and, for most of the time, under lock and key. Alivet begins to fear that she will never return home, and may even become a victim of her hosts' skills when she has outlived her usefulness.
Although no heavyweight of literature, this book is certainly worth a look if you fancy something other than the usual sword and sorcery type fantasy. A good read for anyone who likes something a little different.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2004-07-06

First off let me say that i enjoyed this book - however it has been done before - countless times. I cant tell you how many books involve a person being chased by "the bad guys" and the heroine just runs into mini adverture after mini adventure, solving all easily with no real chance of death. This book is about an apprentice poison worker that meets a master of poison/assasin and spend much of the book running. There are flashbacks to 15th century earth to help explain how and why these people ended up on this distant planet enslaved by aliens. This is a very interesting sub plot, but not one that is needed. I mean do we really need to know why people are on a plantet? Usually its enough for the author to jsut tell us they are there and for the reader to accept it...Anyhow bring this one along if you have a long car trip...otherwise dont bother...

1 out of 5 stars formulaic romance disguised as pedestrian fantasy.......2004-05-01

Take the standard story from a trashy romance novel. Use both historical and pseudo-scientific alchemy as a background. Toss in some unbelievably trite alien overlords. Add some actually quite serviceable prose, and you get this book. If that sounds like the sort of thing you like, go for it. Personally, I hated it.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER RELAXING READ IN A GREAT SERIES.......2007-07-17

I must admit to being rather addicted to the "cozy mystery" genre. They are a source of relaxation for me. These, the Hamish Macbeth series by M.C. Beaton, are some of my favorites. As other reviewers have pointed out, each of the twenty or more books are much the same. Same plot, same characters, same locations, etc. etc. That is okay though. I find this rather comforting. The various characters in Beaton's stories sort of become friends as you keep reading her books and this is always nice.

In this offering, quite a number of the resident's of Hamish's village are recipients of poison pen letters, some which are wild accusations, some with a grain of truth and some, hitting quite close to home. Suddenly Officer Macbeth has two murders on his hands and an endless list of suspects to sort through. The plot though, is actually sort of secondary to this particular series. For me it is the characters, the description of the Scottish Country Side, the almost dark humor and the interaction between the many characters that make the book.

M.C. Beaton is certainly a story teller and is able to articulate her stories through her writing quite well. The humor is dry, and as I said, can be a bit dark at times, but can be hilarious at the same time. Hamish Macbeth, the rather bright and likable police officer is, throughout this work, as with the others, absolutely mystified with the females in his life, and his somewhat quaint love life. As one reviewer put it, he does not have a clue! I love the author's description of the towns, food, country side, people and of course, Hamish's relationship with his dog.

The author tells a simple story which is easy to read (no great thought is required, which is very nice) and the stories are quite fast moving. I find the author's syntax to the quite smooth and a pleasure to read. This is one series I will no doubt stick with and look forward to more. Highly recommend this one if this is your sort of cup of tea.

5 out of 5 stars All's Fair in Love, Job Seeking, and Murder.......2007-06-15

Death of a Poison Pen represents a new high in the Hamish Macbeth series in terms of integrating a number of different story lines in neat and interesting fashion. Long-time fans of the series will find this book to be one of their favorites.

Jenny Ogilvie is jealous of her London colleague, Priscilla Halburton-Smythe. Priscilla is engaged to be married while Jenny has just lost her boy friend when she mentions marriage. Yet Priscilla seems obsessed with her old friend (and former unofficial fiancé) from Lochdubh, Police Constable Hamish Macbeth, and the cases they've worked on solving together. Jenny decides she would like to disturb Priscilla's cool exterior by attracting Hamish's attention. Feigning illness, she heads for Lochdubh.

Once there, Jenny is disappointed to see that Hamish doesn't fit her idea of a handsome Highlander . . . and is engaged in speaking with Elspeth Grant, a local reporter and astrologer. A lot of funny scenes follow as Jenny chases Hamish and ends up being paired instead with new reporter, Pat Mallone, who had fancied Elspeth until Jenny arrived.

But Jenny remains obsessed with the idea of solving a crime . . . even if Hamish ignores her. In the background, Jenny's London-based ideas of how to live keep getting her into trouble with the Highlanders.

Elspeth, in the meantime, finds her interest in Hamish to be dwindling as he continues to avoid becoming involved. But she recognizes Jenny as a rival and finds he competitive juices stoked.

There are also some goofy poison pen letters being received in Lochdubh and Braikie. Mrs. Wellington, the minister's wife, got one accusing her of having an affair with Hamish. Well, hardly! Hamish holds a meeting in Braikie to get copies of the notes and signatures on a petition so he can get the police in Strathbane to spend the money for a handwriting expert.

In the middle of this comedy of errors, the atmosphere turns dark when Miss Beattie, who ran the post office in Braikie, is found dead with a poison pen letter under her body. As usual, Hamish is soon disputing with Detective Chief Inspector Blair whether Miss Beattie's death is suicide . . . or murder. Before the book is over, the bodies start to pile up.

Hamish finds himself in the middle of trying to solve mysteries without earning promotion, fending off women who want him, and keeping naive people from getting into trouble. You'll enjoy the mysteries and the twists in the book.

At her best, M. C. Beaton has a fine talent to exploring irony. She draws deeply on that talent in this fine book. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-26

Every Hamish Macbeth installment is worth the wait. This one is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Hamish Macbeth Mystery.......2007-05-07

This story grabs you quickly and is a good read. There are suspects aplenty, and as usual Hamish the constable of the small village has his share of girls trouble.

3 out of 5 stars Macbeth, the dread Scot of the Highlands!.......2005-07-01

I've read (and reviewed most of them) all 20 in the Hamish Macbeth series by M.C. Beaton. Once again, Ms Beaton features the lovable, affable, and quite wily Macbeth, once again solving the local murders no one else can. Once again, he's in trouble with Blair (his boss) and once again Priscilla figures in in what most readers probably hope will be "the" time, when, for once and all they get married.

Sigh, sigh, sigh. Nothing is changed in "Death of a Poisoned Pen." Taken by itself, or if one hasn't read all 20, perhaps the same old same old is new and innovative and creative and clever. Alas it's not.

That said, however, Ms Beaton's following is huge and she continues to entertain nicely, thank you, even if she's not come up with anything new, creative, or clever (ala the later Agatha Christie works). So that said, be prepared for the usual: but its a usual that I, for one, no doubt, will continue to read. Violence aside, it's nice to read that SOME folks have virtue and moral turpitude (although Lochdubh has its share of those who don't!). And as for local color, Ms Beaton, it seems, does capture the Scottish countryside well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Murder by Deception.......2007-07-26

"Behold, Here's Poison" by Georgette Heyer is a story that lingers in the mind. I read this book many years ago, but had the wrong author in mind when searching for it to reread. It was a delight to rediscover this clever story with a murder weapon I've never seen used in another story.
Her characters dance from the opening page as real people we'd never meet except between the covers of a book. This is the second appearance of Supertindent Hannasyde as he struggles to deal with vivid "dingbats" and less than helpful relatives who will do their dam-est to protect the family name and foul his investigation. Randall Matthews is so finely drawn he is best described by his beloved as a "amiable viper."
A comic read, which will find a place on your shelf of "keepers," if for no other reason than to study the exquisite art of the English verbal insult.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Sins of the Fathers."

2 out of 5 stars not one of Heyer's better efforts.......2006-05-25

I believe Georgette Heyer was hoping to make the cousin Randall an attractive bad boy a la Johnny Depp; instead, he comes off as simply repugnant, like Philip Seymour Hoffman in the indie film "Happiness." Some of the other characters are simply caricatures. As others have mentioned, Heyer is tight-fisted with the clues, although the set-up is a clever one.

Detective Inspector Hannasyde is an amiable and clever fellow, but readers would do better to instead read "The Unfinished Clue," which is a better mystery with more likable characters.

5 out of 5 stars Heyer is always a great bet!.......2002-08-17

Although she cannot be called a great mystery plotter (the murderer is highly unlikely and there is a dire lack of clues), her characters make up for any defects. The lovely dispicable Randall, is hilarious one of my favorite Heyer unheroes. I prefer her Regencies but the mysteries are highly palatable as well.

4 out of 5 stars Bet You Can't Guess!.......2000-09-23

The plot is not great, but the other qualities in the book make up for this deficiency. Her characters are charming and well-developed, and you'd never guess who the murderer is - although that may be because it's so unlikely. One of my favourite Heyer mysteries, along with Why Shoot A Butler and The Unfinished Clue. If you liked Heyer's mysteries, you could also try Mary Stewart, who writes suspense/romance as well.

4 out of 5 stars a fun to read mystery.......2000-03-27

Although Georgette Heyer is primarely known for her Regency romances, she was also a writer of my classical English mysteries. This one is certainly her best. Although the plot is not exactly brilliant (hence only 4 stars) the characters are up to her usual standards, esp as the odious hero Randall who you love to hate and hate to love. Very entertaining, not only for Heyer's many fans...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Guilty Until Proven Innocent.......2007-06-22

Dorothy L. Sayers created perhaps one of the most iconic of all detectives when she fashioned Lord Peter Wimsey. At first impression, Wimsey seems to be a lot of piffle, dressed to the nines, and overly confident in his intelligence. Yet there is something intriguing about his character and his buffonery that makes readers laugh at his expressions and marvel at his exploits. Such is the case with "Strong Poison", the book that introduced Lord Peter Wimsey to Harriet Vane.

The reader is immediately drawn into the story through a recounting of the evidence against Harriet Vane; she is on trail for murdering her lover with arsenic. The case against her seems airtight, and it isn't helpful that she was writing a mystery concerning arsenic poisoning, but Wimsey is convinced of her innocence, and is just as convinced of making her his wife. When the jury can come to no verdict, the defense has one month before Vane will be retried. Wimsey takes it upon himself, with a colorful cast of helpers, to make sure he clears Harriet's name and finds out who the real murderer is.

"Strong Poison" is a quick-paced read with ingenious plotting to the central mystery that is baffling to the readers. Although one can only handle so much of Lord Peter Wimsey at one time, the story clips along even with a wide array of characters and a plot that includes sleuthing, religious fanaticism, lessons in lock picking and spiritualistic shennanigans. All of these strange occurrences brew together to create a truly unique mystery. While Dorothy L. Sayers' writing can seem dated, since this novel was originally published in 1930 and the expressions that are used are not in modern usage, her stories have stood the test of time, and will continue to do so.

4 out of 5 stars Lord Peter in love.......2007-02-19

It's nice to see Sayers's unflappable and delightfully conceited Wimsey suffer from the disabling effects of self-doubt in this one. As opposed to his traditional dilettante approach to crime solving, there is something on the line here. Wimsey's in love and his new found love is in line for the gallows. Sayers aristocrat superman has fallen for murder suspect, Harriet Vane, and he is in a race against time to find the actual killer and while the solving of the case is far too dependent on Wimsey's use of intermediaries, there is a satisfying conclusion and a more human Lord Peter for the reader's enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Poison.......2006-11-10

No one knows more about poisons than crime fiction writer Harriet Vane, which makes her the natural suspect when someone feeds ex-lover Philip Boyes arsenic. Enter Lord Peter Wimsey, who sees Harriet for the first time standing in the dock and is instantly convinced of her innocence. The rest of Dorothy L. Sayers' Strong Poison is spent in convincing the rest of us.

The sixth of the Wimsey novels and the first of four to feature Harriet, this tale is a classic in the crime fiction genre, both for the mystery itself (I will never forget hunting up a copy of A Shropshire Lad so I could figure out how Lord Peter figured it out) and for the beginning of the rich, complicated relationship between Peter and Harriet. The minor characters (Miss Climpson, the Duchess, Blindfold Bill Rumm) are only added seduction, as is the peek over their shoulders of the all but forgotten years between World Wars. In order, the Wimsey-Vane novels are Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, Gaudy Night, and Busman's Honeymoon.

3 out of 5 stars Peter meets Harriet - but still not one of Sayers's best books.......2006-08-31

This was the first Peter Wimsey mystery that I didn't find totally satisfying. I had really high hopes; I couldn't wait to find out how Peter and Harriet met, and why Peter fell in love with her.

It starts off promisingly enough - the judge is summarizing the case against Harriet for the jury, who are about to start their deliberations. It's a pretty strong case; Harriet's former lover died of arsenic poisoning, and Harriet had been buying arsenic for research purposes.

Now, first of all, it was really easy to figure out who the real murderer was. Normally Sayers keeps me guessing much longer than she did here.

Second of all, Peter does almost nothing from beginning to end. Miss Climpson and her staff do all the actual detecting - Peter mostly flops around feeling a little useless because love for Harriet has impaired his judgement.

Third of all, Peter is already in love with Harriet as the book begins. Not only do we not see him actually falling in love, the first thing he ever says to her is to ask her to marry him. This is romantic and all, but what makes Peter and Harriet's relationship so magical to me, at least, is their repartee - they're so well matched in wit, sensibility, and principle. I thought something more mature than love at first sight would bring them together.

There's a little bit of a twist - but I guessed it around the same time as I guessed the murderer, which is to say pretty early on.

I still enjoyed Strong Poison, quite a bit, but Sayers has done better.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, suspenseful and riveting!.......2006-07-01

Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey is one of the most enjoyable detective characters of the genre. Set in the 1920's, this English mystery series portrays Lord Peter as a highly intelligent, intuitive amateur sleuth. He has many other talents: he is an accomplished pianist, a collector of antiquarian books, cricketeer (a star when he was in school), has a charming and self-deprecating manner and it is hinted at throughout the series that he is accomplished at love-making having had several quite satisfied mistresses.

In this installment, Lord Peter meets the woman of his dreams. She is on trial for murder and he must find out who committed the crime in order for her to be set free. He commences courting her in prison and is in emotional turmoil due to his fears he will not be able to solve this crime.

Lord Peter's object of affection, Harriet Vane, is a very interesting woman--a modern woman who is independent and has been leading a non-traditional lifestyle. She is unconventionally beautiful with an unusually deep voice and writes detective novels. A nice addition to the series.

Making Lord Peter have a personal stake in solving the crime, rather than just an intellectual exercise, created a nice tension in this novel. This happened before when Lord Peter's brother was on trial for murder. Lord Peter is known for his calm under stress and in this case seeing him as an agonized lover added to the suspense as well as increasing the attraction of the Lord Peter character.

From the author: I observed a Rufous Motmot (Baryphthengus martii) feeding a black-and-green poison dart frog (Dendrobates auratus) to another motmot in the Caribbean Slope lowland rainforest of northeastern Costa Rica. Neither individual appeared to suffer any ill effects from what was probably courtship feeding. Small vertebrates are typical prey for the larger species of motmots. Blue-crowned Motmots (Momotus momota) have been observed consuming several species of poison dart frogs raised in captivity but captive reared frogs either do not contain, or have reduced levels of, the toxins that native frogs produce. Relatively little is known about the effects of poison dart frog toxins on predators. Presumably, the digestive system of the Rufous Motmot is capable of neutralizing the potentially toxic effects of such prey.
