A Hunger Like No Other.......2007-09-19
Although I found this book to be enjoyable, it did not require or engage my entire attention. I was able to read it at work between calls and was able to keep up with what was happening. This book to me seemed to drag at times and at other times moved along. I am not yet certain if it is going to stay in my collection or be passed on. I have not yet started the second book in the series although I will read it and have purchased the third book. It just did not reach out and grab me.
So So.......2007-09-14
I liked the start of the book but after a while it was a little fustrating. It took for ever for them to have sex. The theme was good and the charters are enjoyable. I think the charter Emma went a little overboard by playing really had to get. Took her for ever to come around. However, I still plan to read the rest of the series.
Sexy, Daring, but Something's Missing.......2007-09-01
I could hardly put this book down, especially the spicy scenes, which were written perfectly! And the plot of the book was believeable, and well-written.
But when Emmaline and Lachlain finally come together, the book immedietly goes downhill. Even when they finally have sex, the scene is too short, and not nearly as descriptive as previous scene. From there on is just plot, we don't get any more sexy situations!
And perhaps this is just me, but Emmaline's Valkyrie family were the MOST obnoxious characters I have EVER read in a book. Their logic, tactics, and personalities were grating and flat.
However, I still give the book 4 stars because all other aspects were amazing, and I definitely intend to read more in the series!!!
My first paranormal romance and ....I loved it!!.......2007-08-25
I usually read historical romances (medieval, Georgian, regency & Victorian), but the trend in romance seems to be going in the paranormal direction so I figured I'd give one a try. I was seriously afraid of what I call "rolling eyes syndrome" ; some things are just unbelievable and I was hoping that this wasn't going to be just a bad B-movie read.
I am so surprised! I love this book! It reminds of some of my fav Scottish romances, but MUCH more intense and WAY edgier/darker! The alpha male hero is totally hot Scottish highlander hunk (a real treat for this Julie Garwood fan) and the heroine is this a shy little thing who eventually turns into a kick a*s woman. There's werewolf's, vampire's, Valkyrie, witches, wraiths etc., and Cole (author) does a excellent job introducing and giving background information on each one of these. She does this so well that I became instantly engrossed in the book and simply couldn't put it down. There are tons of really cool secondary characters that each have their own unique powers and personally I can't wait for those sequels!
So if you like historical romance or contemporary for that matter, this is a great place to start checking out paranormals. As for me, I have a feeling this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Fabulous.......2007-08-20
This is a great book. The character's are so well developed. You really feel like you know these people.

No rest for the reader is more like it.....l.......2007-10-08
I just finished reading this book and I can't wait for immortals after dark series 3! I've already pre-ordered waiting in anticipation! These characters are deep, passionate with thier work and very wicked when it comes to 'winning the prize' of all prizes. Going back in time to prevent tragedy which also may have consequences. It's a spellbinding read which made me want to 'forget the real life' for awhile to learn how these characters unfolded and came together. Write faster Kresley Cole!
Still So So.......2007-09-14
Okay. Still love the characters and the love scenes are very very hot and steamy. And because of that I give a 4 star rating. But still similar to the 1st book, where the femaile character (Katja) plays a little too much hard to get. That kind of fustrates me a little. However, I still plan to read the 3rd book when it comes out.
No Rest for the Wicked.......2007-09-08
Kresley Cole is one of the best authors of immortal romance EVER!
I have read too many books to list in this genre from many best selling authors and can not remember what sets one book apart from another, except when it comes to Mrs. Cole's Dark series.
Her characters are beyond sexy and yet so vunerable it makes their need for each other so much more real. I find myself laughing out loud and caught off guard several times during her stories when one of the characters says something that makes perfect sense but is so off the wall funny, I need a minute or two to stop giggling and pick the book back up again.
To tell you the truth "No Rest for the Wicked" isn't even her best work out of the three books, but it is still so worth reading.
All of the men and women featured in her Immortals books are all very different from one another, and all very easy to relate to, yet they still remain three very different stories with different personalities, struggles passions and abilities, unlike most romance novels where the same story line and characters are recycled over and over again.
Anyway, my point is GET THIS BOOK and anything else in the Immortals After Dark Series right away. I guarantee you'll love them all!!!!!
p.s. Did I mention that the love scenes in her books are beyond hot! Beyond incredible! Beyond imaginative! Beyond wild, and beyond sweet?....Well if I didn't, then there you have it.
Great Sequal.......2007-08-30
I was pleasantry surprised by Kresley Cole's second book in the Immortals after Dark series.
Wonderfully put together, great characters, and a book I can read over and over again!
Not Bad.......2007-08-14
Not as good as the first book in this series but still a good read.

Customer Reviews:
Great.......2007-07-19
I love this series... you must read it to understand. It's all about a homicide detective named Lt. Eve Dallas and how she goes about solving a case which always seems imposibble to solve at first.
Another Winner.......2007-06-21
This time around, Eve Dallas catches a case that has her professional life merging with her personal one.
When her friend Mavis is accused of murdering the former lover of her boyfriend, Dallas finds it difficult to gain enough facts to exonerate her -- especially since all of the evidence is pointing directly towards Mavis. Leonardo, Mavis' new love, has been hired to create Eve's wedding gown, but things turn ugly when Pandora, a high-class, world-renowned model and his former lover, turns up dead in his studio.
As Eve works to clear Mavis, things get worse when more people associated with Pandora start dying, and at the center is a new drug called Immortality.
This is another winner in the "...IN DEATH" series, and you'll do well to pick up a copy -- and read the series from the beginning!
Great Series.......2007-05-21
Born in Death This series is great. The Author has created Charaters that keep you interested and are interesting. The stories move along and because the Year of the crimes, you get a view of what the future could hold. Eve Dallas is a strong woman, who shows that you can overcome your past.
Immortal in Death.......2007-05-07
This like all of the in Death series is a delight to read. I Like the audio when I am working and listening to the reader makes you feel that each Charactor is talking.
Arguably one of the best!!!.......2007-04-13
This book sees Eve in one of her most horrifying predicaments to date. She must balance career and romance, head and heart or risk losing herself amid the chaos that is her life...
It's hard enough trying to plan a wedding.... it's even harder still when you're Eve Dallas, tough-nosed "nothin' girly about me!" Cop Chick! Toss in a murder and make her best friend the prime suspect and you have all the makings of an absolutely wonderful story!
Just when it looks like Eve's life is finally coming together, everything explodes at once....
This was an excellent portrayal of just how strong Eve really is. Nora Roberts (writing as J.D. Robb) does a superb job weaving a tale through which Eve Dallas miraculously exits none the worse for wear!
A futuristic, science-fictiony tale with all the star wars and Harlequin romance you can handle....yet somehow you read this story as if you were living every second.
Positively masterful!
Book Description
In this fascinating book,
Gary Renard and his Ascended Master Teachers, Arten and Pursah, teach you how to integrate advanced spiritual principles into your everyday life. Doing so leads beyond theory to an experience of the Divine and the undoing of the ego. Your progress will be accelerated to such a degree that, with continued practice, you can’t help but stop the need to reincarnate . . . once and for all.
Like Gary’s first book, The Disappearance of the Universe, this work elaborates on the teachings of two spiritual classics, The Gospel of Thomas and A Course in Miracles. By focusing on a unique brand of quantum forgiveness, rather than the old-fashioned kind, and taking the understanding of the importance of thought up to a whole new level, your goal will become nothing less than to break the cycle of birth and death.
Customer Reviews:
Advanced Forgiveness.......2007-10-11
This second book by Gary Renard uses simple and clear language to discuss the concepts in a Course in Miracles. Gary's personal stories are (as in Disappearance of the Universe) both entertaining and fascinating. This book, like the first, focuses on practicing advanced forgiveness and understanding who we really are. The meditations offered in the book are very helpful, especially the one relating the original form of prayer (silent). This is another beautiful book by Gary Renard.
It's Up To You,.. Not A Book.......2007-10-08
A very important fact that the author neglected to mention is that reincarnation is UP TO YOU. You decide if you want to come back. Many people decide not to. There is NO CYCLE, I know first hand. I actually go to a real medium, the deceased teacher that comes through confirms that, along with numerous books written by well known authors like George Anderson, Jane Roberts (Seth Material)etc. Pick up "The Eternal Validity of the Soul" by Seth, if you want real answers.
I am recommending this book to everyone I know.......2007-10-03
This book picks up where The Disappearance of The Universe leaves off, and the story continues... And it is surely the most incredible, powerful, and life changing story I have ever read. Mr. Renard takes us along on his continuing journey with his two ascended masters who teach us accelerated forgiveness techniques. It is through reading this second book that I feel even more awakened to the truth of what this world is, what I am, and how to get Home. Through Mr. Renard's teachings I am not only awakening, I have at long last found my true calling and am now on an entirely new path that I enjoy and love. This is really something after the traumatic past from which I have emerged. If I can heal from sexual assault and years of self-destructive behaviors, then so can others. Thank you Mr. Renard for writing a book that gives some tools that have the power to truly change lives. I am recommending this book to everyone I know.
Your Immortal Realty.......2007-09-26
Very good book. This is a subject, that I believe very strongly in. Read this book with an open mind, and you will enjoy it. I wish everyone would open their minds, and consider what Gary has to say.
disappointed.......2007-09-21
Felt duped.
Gary has given me fodder to practice forgiveness after lying in his DU book.
Is he adding to the universal hypnotism of "this world"?
Is he discrediting the REAL channeling like A Course in Miracles?

Ozorne's making trouble!.......2007-03-31
Daine and her teacher Numair Salamin are sent to Carthak as part of the peace legion. But although Ozorne says that he didn't attack Tortall Daine can tell that he's up to something. She can feel it.
In this book Daine is captured by...sorry I won't tell you. Numair tries to save her and...another thing I won't say. Ozorne is growing powerful and Daine see's her power growing in strange ways. Are these powers good or bad?
While Daine is here she meets Kaddar the prince of Carthak and maybe, just maybe they can do something to stop the war and to defeat Ozorne...
Please read this book. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It has magic, fantasy, action, adventure and a touch of romance.
Dinos bent on Destruction.......2007-02-20
Ever wished you could trash an empiral palace using dinosaurs? Then this book is for you! Animal lovers unite to take out the bad guy.
A good book in a good series.......2007-01-05
I have read this book many times in the past years. Finally being able to own it is great! It has a good storyline and well-thought-out characters. I've loved these books since I was a kid and I hope others read them as well!
Emperor Mage (Immortals).......2007-01-03
I purchased the Immortals series for my granddaughter, who is 12 years old. She read all the books within a period of a week and has subsequently found other titles by Tamora Pierce in her township library. She has developed into quite a Tamora Pierce fan.
A Darkness Unravels.......2006-01-04
Daine and a group of Tortall ambassadors go to Cathak in an attempt to make peace with the Emperor. Daine soon makes friends with the crown prince. However, when she is given a strange power and even stranger things begin to unroll, Daine is swept into it all.
Wonderful book, I couldn't put it down. Pierce carried me through a thrilling place. If you love fantasy, adventure and animals, like me, then you absolutely will love this book. However, this book should be read by young adults and adults. If you're not one of these then the book maybe a little bit too hard for you to follow. But Pierce gives such detail that it feels like you're really inside the book. It is a perfect squeal to Wild Magic and Wolf Speaker.
Book Description
Why has one game, alone among the thousands of games invented and played throughout human history, not only survived but thrived within every culture it has touched? What is it about its thirty-two figurative pieces, moving about its sixty-four black and white squares according to very simple rules, that has captivated people for nearly 1,500 years? Why has it driven some of its greatest players into paranoia and madness, and yet is hailed as a remarkably powerful intellectual tool?
Nearly everyone has played chess at some point in their lives. Its rules and pieces have served as a metaphor for society, influencing military strategy, mathematics, artificial intelligence, and literature and the arts. It has been condemned as the devil’s game by popes, rabbis, and imams, and lauded as a guide to proper living by other popes, rabbis, and imams. Marcel Duchamp was so absorbed in the game that he ignored his wife on their honeymoon. Caliph Muhammad al-Amin lost his throne (and his head) trying to checkmate a courtier. Ben Franklin used the game as a cover for secret diplomacy.
In his wide-ranging and ever-fascinating examination of chess, David Shenk gleefully unearths the hidden history of a game that seems so simple yet contains infinity. From its invention somewhere in India around 500 A.D., to its enthusiastic adoption by the Persians and its spread by Islamic warriors, to its remarkable use as a moral guide in the Middle Ages and its political utility in the Enlightenment, to its crucial importance in the birth of cognitive science and its key role in the aesthetic of modernism in twentieth-century art, to its twenty-first-century importance in the development of artificial intelligence and use as a teaching tool in inner-city America, chess has been a remarkably omnipresent factor in the development of civilization.
Customer Reviews:
The World of Chess Through a Telescope... .......2007-10-02
and what an interesting world it is. An insightful look at the history, pyschology, philosophy, and implications for the future of the world's oldest and greatest game.
This book should please chess lovers, as it is a rare thing in the crowded gamut of chess books... a broad survey of the game. Many of us play the game, and we study chess books and chess software, we play computer progams and human opponents, but perhaps we do not stop to look at the game from a distance. This book does that for us. And there is much we can learn, in my opinion.
Mr. Shenk is a talented and capable writer, and he has done his work well. He builds on his personal relationship with the game. While he is not an avid player, his great great great grandfather was a Grandmaster. The book is a fun to read and a page turner, and while it delights, it also instructs. Not so much as how to play the game, but perhaps why.
Chess is the world's 3rd biggest sport. It was supposed to be killed by the computer - and yet paradoxically the computer has greatly enhanced the game. It is one of the oldest games and yet it defies mastery. This book looks at this and more, from wacky Grandmasters to precocious school kids and dedicated patzers. It examines the history of chess in ancient Persia, to Bobby Fischer versus Spassky in Iceland to Big Blue versus Kasparof in New York.
Most chess books place the game of chess under a "microscope" - they analyze one specific aspect of the game, by breaking the game into pieces with diagrams and algebraic notion. This book is so welcome and necessary because it looks at the big picture of chess... from a distance, through the years, chess through a "telescope".
My only critique is that I wish the book had been even longer!
This book will be of interest to all, from chess expert to novice to the non-player who merely wants an entertaining education about the world's greatest game.
SImply Outstanding!.......2007-09-17
What an outstanding read - part documentary, history, biography and mystery novel. David Shenk has stimulated all of my mental faculities by writing was is arguably one of the most compelling chess history book ever written. From Novice to Grand Master, lots of good moves within this read. Thank you for a job well done!
A personal and rather shallow book.......2007-08-19
Readers looking for a decent history of chess won't find it in this book. They will find a highly personal account of the author's chess experiences and rather indulgent reflections on those experiences, and a grab-bag of topics with some historical connection to chess - but treated in a superficial and almost journalistic style.
The last chapter (Chess and the future of human intelligence) is particularly trivial. Shenk observes a group of kids in an American Chess in Schools program. It is pure mawkisness - perhaps I should say silliness. Dialog is recorded verbatim. Portentious claims are made.
What makes the book interesting is that Shenk intersperses a famous chess game (The Immortal Game between Anderssen and Kieseritzky in 1851) among the otherwise forgettable chapters. One rushes through the chapters just to get to the next phase of this gripping chess game. This was an excellent device to inject interest into what could easily have been a dry, technical account.
The book will interest readers with no knowledge of chess, but who are curious about it and just want an entertaining and interesting read with minimum intellectual demands upon them. Readers who want a more scholarly and coherent account of chess should look elsewhere.
A Fun, Not Technical, Chess History -- and MORE!!.......2007-07-08
When I got this book, my wife took one look at the title and laughed. "A history of chess? Have fun with that." A lot of people will think that about this book, and that's a shame. The Immortal Game is far more than a history of chess.
Shenk does cover a lot of the history of chess. He traces the roots of the game to the Middle East, and traces its spread throughout Europe. But he traces the history of chess through how it is used - chess is used as a metaphor throughout history, and what it serves as a metaphor for tells us a lot about each time period.
Muslims enjoyed chess because it was not a game of chance. It emphasized the idea of personal responsibility and free will over strict determinism and fatalism. Medieval Christians embraced this symbolism as well, even as they changed the pieces to suit their own society (the Elephant of the Muslim game became the Bishop in Christian Europe, for example). Shenk tells of a Dominican monk who wrote what many consider the most influential chess book of all time -- Liber de moribus hominum et officiis nobilium as popularium sive super ludo sacchorum -- which translates as The Book of Morals of Men and the Dutie of Nobles and Commoners, or On The Game of Chess.
Shenk sees chess as a metaphor for life, and the responsibilities of each member of society. He goes so far as to justify the movement of each piece by the role its namesake played in society. Even today, chess is used by psychologists studying human thought processes and how intelligence develops. Computer scientists teach their supercomputers chess in an effort to simulate human consciousness and develop truly artificial intelligence. Elementary school children are taught chess to develop creative thinking skills. Each era adopts chess as its own metaphor, and the game continues to flourish.
Interspersed with the history of the game, Shenk offers a play-by-play of "The Immortal Game," a practice game played by Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kiesseritzky in 1851. The game began as something of little consequence, played between two acquaintances as they were waiting for the next game of their match, but quickly became something of note. The game has been studied by chess students ever since - Kiesseritzky even published a report in his own chess magazine immediately after it was over.
The Immortal Game is a history of the game of chess, but it's more than just a history. It's an attempt to answer the question, why chess? What has made this game so popular? Why has it lasted for over a thousand years? It's a study of the use of metaphor throughout history. It's a discussion of what intelligence really is. And it's an encouragement to novice chess players all over the world that there is a reason to study this game.
We're living through a mini golden age for chess literature.......2007-03-22
There have been a number of chess books published recently, most of them in expensive hardback format: Bobby Fischer vs. Russians, Kasparov's My Illustrious Predecessors, even Shahade's uneven Chess Bitch. Now add to those titles The Immortal Game, a great overview of chess by David Shenk. The author became interested in chess rather late, and he'll never be a great player, and he knows it. But that doesn't mean the game can't be fascinating. One of the things to take away from this book is you don't have to be a Grandmaster to get a lot of out chess.
The book follows the history of the game as it also tracks one famous encounter between two chess players in 1851. Dubbed "The Immortal Game," it sums up what is so magical about chess--its unpredictability, its sudden reversals, and the feeling that no matter how much you play it, you will never fathom its depths. That's also the point Shenk drives home in the part of the book not devoted to the game, as he looks at how chess has shaped thinking on everything from math to science to social class to warfare to art to computers to psychology. He talks about great achievements brought about by chess, and the game's darker side, which has led to more than one case of madness, more than one suicide, and a reclusive American genius' raving anti-semite comments. No other game, he argues, has impacted the world as much, and few have lasted as long.
This is a well-written book, and very engaging. It does not have to be read by a person deeply-immersed in, and it's not overly-technical. I have to quibble a little about his insistence that chess geniuses are made and not born. While I don't doubt that thousands of hours puts the Garry Kasparovs and Susan Polgars of the world ahead of the rest of us, he ignores the fact that many other a would-be champ devoted equal effort to the game and failed miserably. He also doesn't seem to get that much of the "research" that has "proven" effort over aptitude is effected and infused by social and PC bias of the time, just as research on the subject half a century ago was similarly biased in the other direction. We seem to hesitate to say there may be a "chess gene" because the game is predominantly male and almost completely excludes certain racial groups. Be honest and ask yourself if we'd approach the sport of basketball with the same convictions.
Overall this is a very good book, however, and I recommend it for both the devoted fan and the casual, as well as curious, person, as a fine entertainment. Hopefully we are seeing a chess-publishing revival in the book world, and renewed interest in the game in the U.S.

Wowee zowee!!.......2007-09-27
In this 6-CD set Gary Renard presents principles of A Course in Miracles in such a practical way! I simply couldn't track ACIM before reading Gary's book, "Disappearance of the Universe". His second book, "Your Immortal Reality: How to Break the Cycle of Birth & Death", and now this 6-CD set are helping me to put Course principles into EVERYDAY use. "Secrets of the Immortal" has my HIGHEST recommendation to Course students and especially to seekers who may want an overview of ACIM. CAUTION: You will never look at your life and the world the same!
Beyond my own biases..........2007-01-11
I've been a Course student for years and have read both of Gary Renard's books with great interest. When I first listened to this program, I was very disappointed by Gary's lame jokes and tone that spoke down to what I felt should be a borderline retarded audience, even while I was very much aware that this was my own ego prejudice. But after being so debilitated from depression that I couldn't even pick up the Course for a few brief minutes, I played this program while I lay in bed, and the simplicity of his delivery enabled me even in the pathetic state I was in to re-embrace the Course teachings and to realize how the ego could ooze back over the mind of even a devoted, long-time Course student. If you're well-versed in the Course and have retained everything from Disappearance of the Universe and Your Immortal Reality, then you'll probably find this program redundant, not so useful. On the other hand, if you're a beginner or haven't read his other works, you may find it insightful. And too, if you're too miserable to get out of bed, it's a good review of his work and the message of ACIM. All in all, not as good as his books, but I still have to give it five stars.
Great CD Set.......2007-01-10
Thoroughly enjoyed hearing the set in the car, and then reviewed it again for our Course in Miracles group.
Moving down the Sprirtual Development path.......2007-01-09
Gary Renard demonstrates an understanding of the Spriritual Principles from the Course in Miracles in his 'Secrets of the Imortal' CD collection.
By listening to Gary speak, you will gain an insite into his unique personality, as well as his devotion to the Truths from this Sacred Text.
This could be an easy way to have a knowlegable student of ACIM to talk to you about some of the complex concepts that a novice may find challenging to understand. Secrets of the Imortal could be compared to a roadmap through an unfamiliar area, but worth the trip one hundred fold.
frank and honest.......2007-01-04
Listening to GARY one gets the feeling that he is very approachable and honest. I like GARY . He`s funny and sounds like he is very concerned that you really " get it " . This is a very good offering . I reccomend it to everybody !! When you finish the cd`s you will definitedly know what FORGIVENESS is really about !!!!!

Now, no matter how hard Gabby tries to avoid him, Adam is everywhere, invisible to all but her—perched atop her office cubicle in too-tight jeans, whispering softly from behind the stacks of the law library, stealing her breath away with his knowing smile…all the while tempting her with the promise of unimaginable pleasure in his arms. But soon danger will intrude on this sensual dance. For as Adam’s quest to regain his immortality plunges them into a world of timeless magic and the deadly politics of the Faery queen’s court, the price of surrender could be their very lives. Another HOT installment in this series.......2007-08-18
Well this book didn't disappoint me at all. If you've read previous books in this series, then you know who Adam Black is. And the heroine that the author matched him with is a strong and perfect match for him. A must have if you like this series!
Seductive.......2007-08-11
I will never think of Faeries in the same way! The Immortal Highlander will seduce you as it leads you across time and space on a passionate adventure full of mythical beings and never-ending love. I will go back and read the rest of the series because I enjoyed Moning's style of writing. She has a wonderful talent for blending fantasy with reality. Thank you for introducing me to the Highlander series.
Immortal Highlander - Highlander Series.......2007-08-09
What can I say? Of all the books in the highlander series, this is the one that I swooned over. KMM does a fantastic job of connecting her novels, yet making sure that they work as stand alone novels as well. I was very cranky when I found that she was finished with the series and starting Dark Fever. After becoming so attached to her characters, especially Adam Black (who can be found in the first of the series), I didn't want the stories to end. Adam is and has been my favorite character since Beyond the Highland Mist. Even then, I was rooting for him - the bad guy! Karen describes him so well, that even with no picture of any kind, I can see each detail of his face and figure. Indeed, what a lovely figure it is. Adam and his antics are amusing, frustrating, captivating, and wonderfully masculine. In this book you come to find him to be so much more than a detached and arrogant Fae with too much testosterone. If I could own only one of KMM's novels, this would be it. Luckily for me, I managed to get my hands on all of them.
I love a sexy Highlander!.......2007-08-09
This book did not disappoint me but I truly love all her books. Great characters - real characters - and a wonderful story line.
Adam is super hot.......2007-07-16
All I gotta say is that Karen Marie Moning knows how to build sexual tension in a book. I've read this book no less than 4 times and it is still hot!! Adam is sexy, confident and arrogant, but you still love him. If I had Gaby's ability to see super hot fairies, I would've been running to them instead of away!!! I'm glad that Adam got to have his own story, but sad that he won't appear in any future books. He's my favorite characer in the Highlander series.
Book Description
Developed soon after World War II, the de Havilland Beaver has become one of the most successful and long-lived designs in aviation history. The Beaver was conceived as a “half-ton flying pickup truck” capable of setting down on land, water, and snow. Since its conception the Beaver has been adopted worldwide, becoming the floatplane of choice for island-hopping along the Pacific Northwest, flying into the Arctic, transporting missionaries and doctors into remote spots in Africa, and serving as a support aircraft in Antarctic expeditions. The Beaver also became “the generals’ Jeep” during the Korean War — and the generals’ favorite transport to fishing spots in peacetime.

A Love Song to an Airplane........2005-12-03
A Great Airplane, and a Great Example of Niche Marketing.
World War II was an aviation war. Literally thousands of airplanes were produced and offered for sale after the war. While this included P-51's and B-17's, it also included smaller planes such as the small observation planes. The market for most airplane companies was difficult.
de Havilland corporation in Canada looked around for a niche where they could design and build a plane that would sell in sufficient quantity to keep them alive. They decided that they would build the greatest Bush Plane that ever existed. And they did.
The thought when they were doing the design was to build the airplane equivalent of the half-ton pickup. The plane was first designed around a smaller engine, so when they decided to use the P&W 450 hp engine, it became quite a performer.
As a marketing niche during difficult times, it essentially saved de Havilland as an aircraft manufacturer. Almost 2,000 planes were build, a long way from the Cessna/Piper production numbers, but it was a much more expensive airplane.
This book is the story of the plane, and it really describes a love affair with the plane.
Greatest Book on the Greatest Bush Plane.......2003-03-15
I first flew in a Beaver in Viet Nam. Didn't know what it was but enjoyed the flight( didn't get shot at ). It was Olive drab with black insignias. A circle with a Beaver inside surrounded by the words" Low, Slow , Reliable" . My second experience in a Beaver was on floats in Alaska some 15 years later. This plane had fish guts, moose meat and Dall Ram intesines. It was the greatest adventure. I fell in love with the plane, along with the romance and adventures it could bring to you.
This book explains everything about the Beaver. Its conception , its improvements and finally its rightful place in aviation history. The plane has improved since it was first designed and built. Built in Canada, flown mostly by the US and reinvented again in BC and Seattle airplane restoration shops. It truly is an amazing story. This book presents it all, text, photos and anything else you might want to know or see. If you live near the water in the Northwest you will have heard and seen a Beaver. If you have flown in Ak you probaly were close to , if not inside, a Beaver. The book is simply the very best on the subject. Buy it , read it, memorize it. Have fun and happy flying. The only two things could be better than owning this book: 1) owning a real Beaver on floats - about $750K ( or more) 2) Flying a Simulator of a Beaver on Floats. About $150. The book
<$20. Oh, you can build models of the Beaver; both non powered and RC vesions both wheels and floats. They just don't seem the same however.
He got d' Beaver Fever.......2000-05-25
All aircraft are good, or else they wouldn't land safely; only a few become legends, such as the Douglas DC - 3 and the de Havilland Beaver, the world's greatest bush plane built in Canada at Downsview, Ontario, from 1947 to 1967.
The Beaver was a typically Canadian project, it is rugged, reliable, durable and practical for people who were haulers of water and hewers of wood. It is the haul-anything, go-anywhere pickup truck of the air; similar to their earthbound brothers before they became "sport utility vehicles" that are too genteel to stray from perfect pavement. The Beaver is 30 feet long, with a 48 foot wingspan, cruises at 125 miles an hour with a 1,500 pound payload -- and weighs less than most SUVs.
Phil Garratt, longtime head of DHC, created the Beaver. Think of him as an original Sam Walton with an MBWA degree -- management by walking around -- long before Walton. Garratt didn't like rules, titles or organization charts. His favorite expression was, "You know what you're here for, go do it." The people who designed and built the first Beaver were like the dot com pioneers of the Internet who became legendary for living on pizza and Pepsi and working around the clock. Under Garratt, there were no time clocks. When workers came late, they worked late. If Sunday was needed for work, then Sunday was a work day. Garratt knew he was building the world's best bush plane, he inspired that vision. People who create exciting new projects sometimes don't rest even on the seventh day.
Sean Rossiter captures the mood and spirit of de Havilland Canada. This isn't a dull, dry, `how I built an airplane' book, it's a story of teamwork, spirit, confidence and fun. When I worked in Test Flight at DHC in the 1960's, it was a company filled with pride, legends and humor. Many stories seemed too fanciful to be true, but most turned out to be solid fact. Rossiter presents facts, stories, legends and with typical Canadian spirit includes the humor. It is a superb book.
In the final analysis, when you look at anything worthwhile, people make the difference. In Canada, just after World War II, there was a glowing confidence that anything could be done. A few miles away at Malton, Canadians built the Avro Jetliner which first flew in 1949. Since neither Canada nor the world needed 1,692 superlative bush planes, most were built for military use. The US bought 980 Beavers, the first foreign planes bought in peacetime by both the US Army and Air Force. The US didn't buy any Jetliners, thus only the one was built (there's an attitude in Canada that if the US doesn't buy a product, then it's not worth buying).
The last Beaver was built in 1967, Canada's Centennial Year. The English owners of DHC closed the production line because the inventory had increased to a couple of unsold aircraft. Today, 53 years after the Beaver's first flight, a thousand or more are still flying. How do you justify making more if they won't wear out?
Several firms in Canada and the US refurbish used Beavers, and some will still fly 50 years from now. These survivors aren't pampered pets of millionaires, carefully tucked into air conditioned hangers; they fly every day over some of the world's most rugged terrain. A century is a long time for the commercial life of any aircraft; but hundreds of Beavers may achieve it.
They're like the Model T Ford, the DC-3, the World War II Jeep -- the best ever built for a specific purpose. But, the world moves on. Today, people want a Lincoln Navigator, a Boeing 737, or a Hummer. Yet, a first love lingers long. One of Canada's best bush plane operators summed up the widespread love of pilots and passengers for this plane, "He got d' Beaver fever."
They couldn't have been built in any country but Canada, and Rossiter nicely sums up this immortal plane and the unforgettable characters who made it so. Read it, and catch some of ". . . d' Beaver fever."

Customer Reviews:
Charmingly predictable... .......2007-08-13
...and as I wrote regarding the Trickster series that is just fine. Plot twists are clearly telegraphed, bad guys are quite bad. Good guys are very good. There is one exception to this trend in this series that I thought was a nice touch. The Immortals series gets off to a rocky start. The first volume has a bit of excessive exposition aimed at younger readers and when handled well that is fine, but in this case it is a bit ham-fisted in places.
As other readers have noted the country bumpkin routine gets somewhat tiresome in the first volume, but things pick up and accelerate through the series. This seems to be par for the course for Ms. Pierce. Usually books in a series tend to go downhill as they progress, but that is not the case here.
For adult readers these are bite sized morsels. I was able to plow through the third volume in an evening. For younger readers I suspect these are paced about right.
I do wish these "quartets" came in one or two volumes.
About Daine and Numair.......2007-04-13
Concerning the age difference between Daine and Numair, remember that this story takes place in medieval-like times.
Throughout history, it has been typical for adult men to marry girls who have just reached puberty. It wasn't sicko. In those times, it made good sense. A woman's job was to have babies and keep house. She could do those things at 13. A man's job was to provide for the family. He could do that better if he was older. Practicality mattered more than romance. Of course, Pierce's heroines are wonderful role models for modern girls.
Like other readers, I would like to see more of their relationship. There isn't enough in the (wonderful) Protector of the Small series. Maybe there will be more books.
I am pleasantly surprised that prudes have not complained about Daine been nude throughout so much of the book.
You'll be surprised and blown away! .......2007-03-31
Daine is now a young lady and is still Numair Salamin's student. While Daine and Numair are in a battle with a new immortal called a skinner they're swept away into the Divine Realms where gods and immortals live. In this place Daine see's somebody she hasn't seen in years and meets someone new that she wished she'd seen before.
While they are happy not to be dead they know that they are needed down in the mortal world where Ozorne and his creatures are coming against Tortall. They need to find help and get out of the Divine Realms before it's too late for Daine knows that Tortall's fate rests in her hands.
In this book you'll find Romance too! Which is something a lot of people will enjoy. If you've been reading the series you'll probably know who Daine's going to fall in love with but you'll still be excited. This is a wonderous book so read 'THE REALMS OF THE GODS'!
Goods received.......2007-03-14
The product was provided in a timely manner and was is very good condition and communication was received indicating timeframes throughout the delivery process which was quite good to see.
Action, Romance, Magic...what more could you need?.......2007-01-05
Daine is a young girl with a rare magical gift, she can speak with animals. She is now traveling with her teacher Numair to battle off a strange creater known as a skinner. While there Daine and Numair are swept off into the Divine Realms.
This is one of Tamora Pierce's best books! And it has romance, my favorite! But it is pretty easy to tell who Daine's going to fall for. (Hmm...hint: He's got the gift, older than her. Oh I won't give it away!) Daine is a wonderful character with the coolest gift of all. I mean, who wouldn't want to talk to animals AND even turn into them? Well read THE REALMS OF THE GODS!
