Book Description

Every little girl has dreams of being swept up into a great adventure, of being the beautiful princess. Sadly, when women grow up, they are often swept up into a life filled merely with duty and demands. Many Christian women are tired, struggling under the weight of the pressure to be a "good servant," a nurturing caregiver, or a capable home manager.

What Wild at Heart did for men, Captivating is doing for women. Setting their hearts free. This groundbreaking book shows readers the glorious design of women before the fall, describes how the feminine heart can be restored, and casts a vision for the power, freedom, and beauty of a woman released to be all she was meant to be. By revealing the core desires every woman shares-to be romanced, to play an irreplaceable role in a grand adventure, and to unveil beauty-John and Stasi Eldredge invite women to recover their feminine hearts, created in the image of an intimate and passionate God. Further, they encourage men to discover the secret of a woman's soul and to delight in the beauty and strength women were created to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Good insight to the real us.........2007-10-11

This book has been pretty good so far. I kind read through it pretty quickly and learned a bit from it, now I'm going back with a study guide and the journal to make the most of it and I'm taking slowly to be able to really focus and apply some of the material.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-10-03

This book is the best christian book that I've ever read. It really hit home with me and I could relate to all the things it talked about. I truly believe all teenage and young adult girls should read this book!

1 out of 5 stars Practice discernment with this book.......2007-09-29

The Eldredges have a penchant for writing pop culture into their books rather than stating what is Biblical. Much of their Scriptural quotations are deliberately picked and chosen to back up their personal opinions and experiences. Any true student of the Bible would be able to discern the poor exegesis right away. They read into the Scriptures their personal biases, rather than gleaning from the Scriptures what was truly meant.

Aside from that, contrary to what Eldredge has written, every woman's greatest longing and desire is not "to be a beauty." Every woman's (and man's) greatest need is to know that they are God's -- valued and accepted by Him. Sadly, many women have found that their only source of validation, from the time they were little girls, came from their external appearance. When they wore pretty dresses, had cute ribbons in their hair and looked pretty, they were complimented. This taught and reinforced for them that their value comes from their beauty. It then follows that many women long to 'unveil beauty' (as Eldredge writes) because that's the only way they know validation. Women, this is not what we should be teaching our younger women nor should this be what we believe. What we are all seeking is to be valued, and we can be valued by God simply because we belong to Him -- not because of how we look or what we've done. Our identity comes from Christ. And our purpose in life is not to be a beauty, to be rescued and romanced or join a man in his adventures -- rather, it is to follow God on the adventures He has us go on. We are not called to just be sidekicks to the hero, we are also called to be heroines. God's call is for both men and women to be 'fishers' of men and women. God's commission is for both men and women to make disciples of all nations. This means both men and women are to go on great adventures with God. Don't settle for a lesser role than God intended for you.

As a final note, we all know and understand from Prov 31:30 that "beauty if fleeting". A woman's greatest call is to be "a woman who fears the Lord." This is what we ought to pursue with passion.

I wouldn't recommend this book to any of my friends. But if you want to see what all the hype is about, I just wanted to encourage you to practice discernment in reading this book. Take their words with a grain of salt. Remember that it is THEIR words and opinions, not biblical words from the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars Validates the importance of womanhood and beauty.......2007-09-29

Being an aesthete, I always considered myself trivial in my need for beauty. I couldn't imagine why it was so important to me, but I figured it must be a dysfunction and I felt shallow for it. I also had trouble with femininity in general because what was feminine was not valued in my childhood home or in the media. That was until I read Captivating. Eldredge did an excellent job breaking down what is critical and powerful about beauty and womanhood, in a way that was impacting and memorable. I consider it a must-read for women.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book Revealing Those Times We Were Broken As Women.......2007-09-25

I had to read this after I read Wild At Heart--This book pointed out so many times, places in my life when I was broken. When my spirit was crushed, when I missed getting something that I truly needed for my life--and it also gave me the strength to say, "Hey, that's okay -- I'm okay -- I'm beautiful." Thank you -- John and Stasi -- for your ministry and honesty!

Book Description

Every little girl has dreams of being rescued by the hero, of being swept away into a great adventure, of being the beautiful princess. Sadly, when women grow up, they are taught to be tough, efficient, and independent. Many Christian women are tired, struggling under the weight of the pressure to be a "good servant," a nurturing caregiver, passionate lover, or capable home manager.

What the Wild at Heart Field Manual did for men, the Captivating: A Guided Journal can do for women. By revealing the three distinctly female desires every woman shares, John and Stasi Eldredge invite participants to recover their feminine hearts, which may have suffered many wounds but were originally defined in the image of a passionate God.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing.......2007-07-18

As a woman who teaches Bible studies, I find this book very captivating, most of the information I either knew or experienced because of my walk with the Lord, but is nice to have a book that can be used as a tool to help other women open up and recognize their wounds but also acknowlege that God can heal them. I am using it again in another Bible Study because it is really helpful in allowing women the permission to open up in small groups. I would recommend this book to any female struggling with who she is and one interested in doing a Bible Study for women who need to experience God's love through their pain.

I have been reading through this book along with using the journal with my small group of women from church. It's been great! It can be pretty heavy at times, but it's definitely a book all women should read. It helps to put words with things we've felt but couldn't verbalize. I really recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Islam Exposed.......2007-09-13

If you really want to know the difference between Muslim and Christianity read this book. It is a true eye opener written so that everyone can understand.

1 out of 5 stars Full of hate and lies.......2007-07-01

As a former Christian and now Muslim, I have to say that this book is a real disappointment. It's really quite hateful, and the things these guys say about Islam are complete fabrications. I'd like to ask any non-muslim who's interested in learning what Muslims believe to please just meet some muslims and talk to us in real life. Have coffee with a muslim once a week and ask him or her about their beliefs, instead of reading inaccuracies like this! It could really do us all a lot of good. We all need to get to know and understand each other better, that's the only way peace can be created, and we can't do that by reading books but by forging actual relationships.
May the Peace of the ever merciful God be with you.
Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-22

Excellent book. I really enjoyed this book and the information that I learned. This is a really touchy subject so I am not surprised how drastic the difference in reviews are. The authors are very knowledgeable and show exactly where they get their facts. I would recommend this book to everyone and wish that more people would read it.

3 out of 5 stars Basic overview.......2007-06-21

If you don't know anything at all about Islam, this is a great book. It gives the basic facts about the religion, its history, and its implications in current events. It has excellent ideas for people who want to witness to their Muslim acquaintances as well. Keep in mind, though, that the information is very, very basic. If you really want to be well-informed about Islam, you should probably try another book.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Book.......2007-06-15

Don't be turned off by the fact that the former Muslim's who wrote this book are now Christians. I found two of the best parts of the book were the brief yet riveting history of Islam as well as the writers relationship with their father. The two English Qur'an translations I used to cross check were the Abdullah Yusuf Ali, and Maulana Muhammad Ali versions.

If you are used to reading the King James Bible, you will have no problem grasping the language used in either of these two Qur'an translations. Each include plenty of the writers interpretations of the verses.

Book Description

In this groundbreaking book, Frank Viola introduces us to three tales that furnish us with a breathtaking glimpse into God's highest passion. The first is the story of a God who is an ageless romantic driven by one consuming pursuit. The second is the tale of a God who has sought for an eternity to have a resting place . . . a habitation . . . a home. The third is the tale of a God from another realm who visits planet earth to establish a heavenly colony that will give Him visible expression. All of these tales telescope into one another. They are but three scenes of one grand drama. Each of them is shrouded in a sacred mystery. A mystery that has been "hid in God for ages." The New Testament authors, especially Paul of Tarsus, unveil these three tales with maddening passion. Each tale flows out of the ultimate passion that lies resident within the throbbing heart of God. They are, as it were, His central intention behind creating the universe. Put together, these three tales embody "God's story"--the great interpretive narrative by which we may better understand the Bible, the Christian life, and our world. And that story is the chief reason why He created you! So watch the drama unfold and explore afresh the eternal passion of your God. In so doing, you shall find your own purpose and the passion by which to fulfill it.

Reviews

God's Ultimate Passion takes you on a guided tour of the Bible, tracing three interwoven storylines from Genesis to Revelation. It expresses the intensity, hope, and wonder of an engaged, grass-roots, visionary practitioner. It will help new readers of the Bible get the big picture, and it will help seasoned Christians remember what really matters.
Brian McLaren, author/activist

. . . Viola artfully weaves his own story into the drama of redemptive embrace, making God's love both a deeply personal affair as well as something of an existential quest in which we all have a part to play. As such it is 'the old, old, story' retold for a new and contemporary audience. It is a great work of narrative theology made very accessible for any reader. This is clearly the work of a man who loves the Bible as much as he does the people for whom he writes. And it is a work well done.
Alan Hirsch, author of The Forgotten Ways, The Shaping of Things to Come, and founding director of Forge Mission Training Network

God Ultimate Passion is a masterpiece that takes seven thousand years of human history and simplifies it so that the reader can understand what has always been God's passion. It looks beyond the hands of God into His mind and heart as it places our lives and purposes in divine perspective. This is a must read for those who believe and for others who want to believe. God's Ultimate Passion reads like a movie on paper . . . Great Job!
Dr. Myles Munroe, author of Rediscovering the Kingdom

. . . This poetic expose by Frank Viola is indeed a masterful work of art - a modern day mystical classic for sure. It is with a burning heart that I commend to you God's Ultimate Passion.
Dr. James W. Goll, Encounters Network, author of The Lost of Practicing His Presence, The Seer, Dream Language, etc.

Some books are meant to be read and shelved. That's not true of the "Classics." Through the generations, books that are Classic speak to new generations who were not even born when it was written. It a book for this hour, without a doubt. But it will be a book for years and years to come. It has captured truth in simple language that speaks to the heart, not just the head. God's Ultimate Passion is one of those books. Upon reading it, I have ordered a case to be sent to people I know who must digest its message. I thank the Lord for the anointing that is upon its pages.
Dr. Ralph W. Neighbour, author of Where Do We Go From Here? and founder of the Cell Church Movement

Frank sidesteps the maze of ecclesiastic labels to get to the heart of what church really is and how God sees it. Using the biblical metaphors of church, and fleshing them out with the whole sweep of Scripture, Frank gives us fresh insight into the church as Bride of Christ, House of God, as Household, Body of Christ and the Family of God. Frank's unique contribution has to do with passion and romance, elements of God's intention with his people. This is often missing in "missional" books written by men unhealthily driven by purposeful objectives and blinded to the passionate romance of enjoying God forever. It bothers me that our talk of being "missional" often misses this dimension. We see the church dressed in a business suit but never in high heels and evening gown. Frank reminds us that the church is glamorous and God is concerned with more than just getting the job done.
Andrew Jones, tallskinnykiwi.com

A lot of literature comes past my desk, and this is one of the most refreshing books I have read in a long time . . .
Jon Zens, editor of Searching Together

I was amazed. I was captivated. It was the Bridegroom revealed in such a compelling way that I tearfully rejoiced. Could it be true? The story I had known as a child suddenly took on new dimensions . . .
Dotty Zens, editor of Searching Together

Viola leaves trivialities aside, turning instead to scriptural evidences of what motivates God Himself. He weaves the scriptural accounts of history into a wondersome tapestry with a common thread . . .
Charles J. Wilhelm, author of Biblical Dyslexia

It's about time that someone has unfolded the Bible as a love letter written to us by the Father of all love who gave us Himself without reservation in His only begotten Son. Frank Viola has done this in God's Ultimate Passion, which is an exegetical treasury. Every page is densely packed with deep spiritual insights . . .

5 out of 5 stars Learn the neglected fundamentals.......2007-08-24

This book is one of the best ever written on God's eternal purpose. Viola provided me with a whole new perspective on the mind of God and helped me understand better the Scriptures through which He reveals His mind. You will learn to look at the Bible very differently from what most have been taught, and some people will probably be threatened by this approach. I still strongly advise you to read this book and keep an open mind. If you do, Viola will take you on a journey into God's heart. There, you will learn what His desires are and how you can be part of their fulfillment! You will gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the deeper life, and see why it is so important that Christians commune with each other in unity with Christ as their only head. Viola will show you how the three great images of the Church (the Bride of Christ, the House of God, and the Body of Christ) are reocurring themes in the Bible which reveal the Father's ultimate purpose for His Son, and the Son's ultimate gift to His Father. This book is one of the greatest helps I have yet discovered for helping believers get beyond themselves and live for God's purpose. This is a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars Mindboggling and life-shaking.......2007-05-23

I was first introduced to Viola when a friend gave me one of his earlier books "Pagan Christianity". That book cracked the door into an adventure that has literally turned my whole world upside down. I ordered and have read most of his other books now but "God's Ultimate Passion" is far and away the most awe-inspiring of his work. I felt as if I was walking on sacred ground and often had to stop reading and walk away to ponder and absorb what I had read. It is the kind of book that after you read it you tuck it away in a special place knowing that you want to come back again to savor it's powerful truths and give them sufficient time to allow them to sink more deeply inside of you, for these truths are the very revelation of Christ that the Apostle Paul wrote so eloquently and passionately about and that are hidden like treasure throughout the whole of scripture.
"God's Ultimate Passion" by Frank Viola had such a powerful effect on me that I did something I've never done before. I ordered a whole case of them to hand out to friends and relatives and people I know who need to hear it's message, for it is a message that I have come to know is straight from the heart of God. It is a message that can be veiled by an unbelieving or a "religious" heart, but it is a message that shouts at the dawning of each new day and throughout all of creation. Revealing "the purpose behind everything", if this book is read with an open mind and an open heart it will unfold for the reader a reality that has everything to do with everything. I can't emphasize enough that this is a message that all God's people need to hear and to hear in a way that we begin to live it until the passion of God becomes our own passion and we find ourselves part of an incredible story that began before there was time and that is unfolding right now before our very eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Visionary, Engaging.......2007-03-22

In "God's Ultimate Passion", Frank Viola emulates a man pursuing the heart of God responding to His irresistible invitation to spiritual union. This three fold story of God's romance and plan for the Bride of Christ, the dwelling place (house) of God, and the Body of Christ (the Family of God) is solidly based on Biblical teaching.

This is God's own love story. It is the story of a redemptive love, which draws the Bride of Christ into an expression of ultimate passion. The bride captivated with the bridegroom revels in his grace, to accept his love.

Frank writes with an exciting intensity and vision that is persuasive. He moves the reader to a positive response and life changing action "to let Him build us together with others in the way that He has always wanted...So that He might have His House upon this earth."

Viola is a gifted communicator stirring the reader to awaken a new perspective of self, God and the potential lying dormant within, "crying out for expression."

This is a book for "revolutionaries who are reaching for God's highest."

5 out of 5 stars Copying an e-mail I sent to Frank.......2007-03-22

In the e-mail to Frank, I said:
I wanted to let you know that I got your book in January and how much it's meant to me. I loved this book!
I don't think I've ever heard a clearer description of God's passion. I was in one of your meetings in Williamsburg in 2004 and heard you talk about "the lady" in Williamsburg, but I didn't 'hear' like I did when I read this book.
I think I'm 'seeing' for the first time some things I've only known about vaguely. I received a clearer understanding of God's 'loneliness,' His 'romantic intention,' and His need for 'a place to stay.' One of the greatest impacts though was seeing that the Bride of Christ is a corporate woman and not individuals living independently (which is where I am right now). When I read the chapter "Exiting the Desert of Waste," I began to say to God, "I don't want to die in the wilderness. Lead me out and into the fullness of your purpose for my life."
This book was life to me. It's changing so many of my thoughts about God and about myself as I relate to Him. Thank you, Frank, for writing this important book.

5 out of 5 stars Discover the mysteries of God!.......2007-03-21

Violas message in this book is: There has been a mystery hidden in God since before time began, and God in His love has chosen to reveal them to us by His Spirit! Thank God that Frank Viola has been faithful as a steward of the mystery to deliver this wonderful news to the saints.

In the first section of the book he discusses God's passion to have a counterpart for His Son, the Lord Jesus. Viola doesn't share in a lull theological tone regarding this subject, but penetrates his thoughts with a fervour. What I sensed was that Jesus isn't into nit-picking and theologizing His bride as much as He is into romancing. He wants to love His bride with a divine, pure love which is also exciting and fulfilling, for us as well as Him!

The second section deals with God's desire for a home, a place to lay His head. Viola insists that the house of God is presently being built, with Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone. Clearly, God's house is not one we can build with hands, it is a spiritual house, which is built as we partake of Christ.

The last section, the one which most touched me, is to do with the establishment of God's kingdom on earth. Churches must be very diligent to keep Christ central in all their doings, something which it seems we've been failing to do. As a result of reading this portion I found my thoughts constantly rising to Christ while doing the regular things of life. To make Him central truly is to experience life, for He is eternal life!

Again and again Frank also instructs us that these truths must be treasured by a group of people... discovered WITH one another and not as individuals. After reading this book, I confess that my hunger is great to walk with others while learning God's kingdom now. Let's pursue His passion, and not our own!

Book Description

The veil has been lifted.

Discover the Gospel truth about the most myth-understood woman of the New Testament. Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute? An adulteress? The wife of Jesus? An ancient goddess? Liz Curtis Higgs, best-selling author of Bad Girls of the Bible and Really Bad Girls of the Bible, combines heartfelt contemporary fiction with extensive biblical research to bring to life the real Mary Magdalene of the Bible.

With her own eyes, she saw him.

With her own ears, she heard him.
With her own hands, she touched him.

Unveiling Mary Magdalene opens with the fictional journey of Mary Margaret Delaney, a madwoman adrift in modern Chicago. Her moving story, closely paralleling the biblical account, is followed by a verse-by-verse study of the first-century Mary Magdalene and her life-changing encounters with the Christ.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A dose of encouraging reality.......2007-01-11

Wow! This book is fabulous. Written with typical Liz humor and deep insight, this book is a must for anyone who wants to really understand Mary Magdalene. Liz lets us know why most of our perceptions about Mary Magdalene are erroneous. She also has that wonderful ability to modernize the story for us. We see a fictional modern woman and situation juxtaposed against the scriptural Mary. This really brings Mary to life. If you've read the DaVinci Code, you'll want to compare the two Marys represented.

I can also recommend Bad Girls of the Bible and Really Bad Girls of the Bible by the same author, who describes herself as a "former bad girl." Funny, moving, and meaningful.

5 out of 5 stars terrific two-part combo.......2004-05-28

?The Story?. On an icy Chicago day, Pastor Jake Stauros of Calvary Fellowship sees the desperate mumbling woman in her Goodwill wardrobe struggling to walk so he offered her help. Mary Margaret Delaney pretends to ignore his kindness and just keeps slipping, and incoherently saying ?Luna?. Jake truly wants to help her, but wonders how to reach Mary Margaret without a miracle as she acts as if demons possess her mind, and soul. Yet with God?s help he has assisted several rag tag muffins now part of the Calvary Fellowship. He will continue to pray for Mary Margaret, show her she is not alone, and optimistically hope she will join them. Mary Margaret?s story is a brilliantly written modern day parable paralleling that of Mary Magdalene so that readers can place a contemporary context on perhaps the bible?s ?baddest girl?.

?The Study?. Will the real Mary Magdalene stand up? Was she a courageous individual who followed Jesus and quickly became more than just a believer, but the person who was honored with being the first to see his reappearance? Was she a prostitute, Jesus? earthly lover or was that bad PR by a male dominated medieval church? Was she possessed by demons? Liz Curtis Higgs answers all the above and more with a thought provoking, well researched look at the New Testament. Using specific references that are easy to follow, Ms. Higgs furbishes a powerful intriguing case of who was the real Mary Magdalene.

UNVEILING MARY MAGDALENE is a terrific two-part combo that provides a wonderful novelette with an insightful biblical study that enables the audience to come away with a full understanding of one of the bible?s ?goodest? girls.

Book Description

Respected Bible teacher and beloved pastor Adrian Rogers takes readers on a breathtaking journey through the "Blessing Book." Revelation offers every believer a dramatic and hope-filled overview of what the end of the age will be like. Some people think Revelation is confusing, or even scary, with all its talk of dragons and beasts. But it gives us a proper understanding of where history is headed that will empower us to live boldly as eagerly expect the return of King Jesus as the triumphant Lamb.

As Adrian Rogers will show, the signs of the times already reveal God's plan for bringing his people into full redemption. And we can see them even in our time.

Book was in good shape, delivery on time, and had a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Truth in our day.......2006-09-21

Adrian Rogers explains in very simple to understand terms the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. He believes that the Bible is the inerrant word of Almighty God. From this basis, all Scripture explains Scripture. Therefore, I believe this book to be a very helpful tool to open to the reader an understanding of the Word of God. In Genesis, God created heaven and earth. In Revelation He comes as King of kings and Lord of Lords and creates a new heaven and earth with no more suffering and no more death.

3 out of 5 stars Good Overall but Could Be Much Better.......2006-07-12

Adrian perpetuates of the church age (which is a harmful myth to perpetuate) when he says started "when Jesus came the first time" and will end "when he will come a second time". Actually, if there was any so called church age, it started with the angels when they were created, who then worshipped Christ, God, and the Holy Spirit, and at the very least when Adam, Eve, and Abel existed. Contrary to what many confused Christians think, these three and the ancient Jews of the OT were not saved by sacrificing sheep, but rather the gospel, as the NT clearly teaches, so, so much for the "church" age. And the church will certainly not cease to exist, so I don't get how it can end.

In his explanation of when the rapture is going to be, he explains himself poorly. He says he doesn't no when it will be because no one knows the day or hour when Jesus returns (which implies he believes that that is when it will happen.) It would have been much better if he had just said, "The rapture will happen when Jesus will return to judge the world." And most Christians already know that you can't know the day or hour Jesus will return. The good thing is that he didn't teach that the rapture would occur before the tribulation.

He also seemed to imply that you can't get a good idea as to when Jesus will return with the day or hour comment, but that would mean all the prophecies in the Bible are useless, and obviously they are not.

So aside from that apparent contradiction, this book is decent, but I would try and find something better that is more clear in the rapture area.

5 out of 5 stars "One of the three or four best on this subject!".......2005-12-11

Adrian Rogers recently passed away, and with him, some of the finest teaching skills in Christendom.

His Revelation is one of the best books on the subject. His strength is talking to the reader--not at the reader.

If you want Revelation in-depth, you might seek out "Revelation for the Complete Idiot". If you want a scholarly work, read Mounce.

If you want a teenager-oriented (or brand new believer, or teacher) book on Revelation, there is nothing better than: "Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs!" by Jerry L. Parks.

But if you want a conversational-style commentary--one with wonderful alliteration (which Rogers was the best at!) look no further than this book. You will not be disappointed!

Book Description

The book deeply analyses Nietzsche's influence on Nazi ideology, focusing on how the Nazis appropriated most of Nietzsche's concepts and ideals to fit them into their own doctrine. Yet in doing so, the author draws a clear distinction between the Nazi esoteric doctrine, - which is elitist, supra-national, and spiritual -, and the popular, nationalist exoteric doctrine. She then endeavours to establish a clear link between the Nazi secret doctrine and Nietzsche's philosophy, revealing both the occult character of Esoteric Nazism and the pagan Aryanism of Nietzsche. The book has therefore a two-fold contribution: it unveils the Nazi esoteric doctrine, which the author claims is purely Nietzschean in character, and analyses Nietzsche's philosophy in order to extract from it a clearly eugenicist, Aryanist dimension, thus establishing a clear link between the German philosopher's thought and the Nazi Secret Doctrine. The author thus unveils both Nietzsche's universal Aryanism as well as Nazism's esoteric doctrine. This subject is of great interest to all those interested in a deeper understanding of the spiritual dimension of Nietzsche's thought, as well as the occult nature of Nazism, and the relationship between these two doctrines. The book aims to end the controversy that is still ongoing today as regards Nietzsche's relation to Nazism, by showing that the exoteric side of Nazism, which focuses on nationalism and biological racism, had little to do with Nietzsche's elitist, universal and spiritual Aryanism, thus coming up with the conclusion that Nietzsche's influence was essentially on the esoteric, spiritual, secret doctrine of Nazism.

5 out of 5 stars Nietzsche and Esoteric Nazism........2006-07-09

_Nietzsche, Prophet of Nazism: The Cult of the Superman: Unveiling the Nazi Secret Doctrine_ by Abir Taha is a rather strange book which attempts to argue that Friedrich Nietzsche, the philosopher of the Superman, was in fact a Nazi (or proto-Nazi). Contrary to previous criticism of Nietzsche in English such as that of Kaufman and Hollingdale, which has presented a softened version of Nietzsche arguing that he was not a Nazi and indeed that his philosophy was in fact perverted by the Nazis, the author of this book contends that these readings are superficial and fail to make several important distinctions which lead to the inevitable conclusion that Nietzsche was in fact a Nazi. This book regards Nazism as having two components, an exoteric component which focused specifically on German nationalism, biological Aryan racism, and anti-Semitism and an esoteric component which focused on elitism, a spiritual form of racism (a racism quite distinct from nationalism in actuality), and a spiritual anti-Semitism. The exoteric component was best exemplified by the S.A. and the esoteric component was best exemplified by the elite of the S.S. In addition, the esoteric component was linked closely with the occult. The author makes two important distinctions which have enabled her to show the superficiality of previous Nietzsche scholarship. The first of these is the distinction between racism and nationalism. While the Nazis were indeed "racial nationalists", it should be noted that they were racists first and this means an international ideology which focuses on the master race and not merely a nationalistic ideology. This can explain Nietzsche's many disparaging comments towards "the Germans", in that he was opposed to the weakness of the German nation but not the superiority of the Aryan race. Secondly, the author disguishes later in the book between two types of anti-Semitism. On the one hand there is the traditional Christian anti-Semitism (which Nietzsche disparages in his writings) and on the other there is the elitist aristocratic anti-Semitism (which Nietzsche advocates). This distinction again shows how Nietzsche's previous writings have been superficially interpreted. The author contends that there have been three possible interpretations of Nietzsche in the past. The first of these is that Nietzsche was indeed a Nazi (advocated by Alfred Bauemler, Nietzsche's sister, Elisabeth Foerster-Nietzsche, and Anthony Ludovici, as well as the Marxist scholar Georg Luckacs). The second is that Nietzsche was partly Nazi (advocated by Crane Brinton, Arthur Knight, and William Bluhm). The third is that Nietzsche was anti-Nazi (advocated by Walter Kaufman, George Morgan, the Marxist scholar H. Lefebvre, and Karl Jaspers). Those in the anti-Nazi camp claim that Nietzsche's anti-nationalism, his opposition to the Germans, his opposition to the anti-Semites, and his anti-statism make him contrary to the Nazis. However, as the author shows in this book, these understandings of Nietzsche are mistaken and based on a superficial understanding of Nazism (failing to recognize the distinction between the exoteric and esoteric Nazi doctrines).

The author begins this book by noting the role of the Superman (or Ubermensch) in Nietzsche's philosophy and bringing to light the revival of Aryan paganism. The advent of the Superman or "God-man" had long been hoped for across the myths of all traditional cultures, and this ideal was merely given form by Nietzsche's philosophy and later by the Nazis. The author notes the role of paganism in esoteric Nazism (emphasizing the writings of individuals such as Hitler, Himmler, and Rosenberg) as well as in the philosophy of Nietzsche. The goal of Nazism appears to have been the breeding of the Aryan "God-man" or Superman as advocated by Nietzschean philosophy. The author also notes the role of Greece in both Nazi belief and in Nietzschean philosophy, emphasizing for example the role of the titan Prometheus, believed to be the progenitor of the Aryan race. The author also discusses the Aryan myth and the role of Atlantis in the creation of that myth. The author also distinguishes between the Aryan Christ and the Judeo-Christian conception of Christ, as seen in both the philosophies of Nietzsche and Nazism. The author also notes the role of the dread eternal recurrence in Nietzschean philosophy. Next the author turns her attention to morality, and the role of Nietzsche as immoralist who sought to go beyond good and evil, and thus a progenitor of Nazism. The author notes the hatred of Nietzsche and the Nazis for the Judeo-Christian foundation of modern civilization. Both sought eagerly the death of God and his replacement by the Aryan Superman. As immoralist, Nietzsche sought to overcome all "slave morality" to adopt "master morality" by transvaluating all values. The same idea was carried out by the Nazis in the way they embraced radical evil. In addition, the author discusses Nietzsche's conception of the Will to Power, showing how this conception played out in the worship of the Will by the Nazis. The author next turns her attention to the aristocratic worldview, emphasizing Nietzsche's and the Nazi's elitism and hatred for the herd. The author shows both the hatred of Nietzsche and the Nazis for socialism, liberalism, and humanism, the values of the herd. The author shows how both Nietzsche and the Nazis advocated the extermination of the weak and unfit while at the same time advocating a system of eugenics to breed the Aryan Superman. This emphasis upon a cult of blood was to play out in the worst horrors of the Nazi Third Reich regime. Finally, the author turns her attention to Nietzsche's anti-Semitism, showing the distinction between Nietzsche's anti-Semitism in regarding the Jews as a race (the ultimate decadents) to be exterminated and earlier anti-Semitism which regarded the Jews as a religion. While Nietzsche attacked those weaker anti-Semites who came before him, as was seen by scholars such as Kaufman, he also advocated a more pronounced form of anti-Semitism which led to the creation of the Nazi state.

This book offers an interesting reading of Nietzsche's philosophy and an interpretation of it which is sure not to please many in academia. While I believe the author leaves out much, such as Nietzsche's break with Wagner or many of his personal letters, this book nevertheless provides an interesting take on Nietzsche's radical aristocratic philosophy. In any event, it offers a unique study of Nietzsche independently of many of his modern interpreters.

5 out of 5 stars Author draws unique links between Nietzsche and Esoteric Nazism.......2005-09-16

Friedrich Nietzsche is probably best known as the philosopher who "killed" God. However, Abir Taha offers a new vision of him, one that involves the Nazi occult thought, which she details in her groundbreaking new book, Nietzsche, Prophet of Nazism: The Cult of the Superman; Unveiling the Nazi Secret Doctrine.

"From times immemorial, humanity has dreamt of creating the perfect man, the `God-man' or `Superman'. Yet this cult was only clearly expressed in the philosophy of its modern prophet, Nietzsche, and culminated in its fiercest supporter, the National Socialist ideology, a political religion whose main ideal and objective were the creation of a superman species," Taha says.

Her book, Nietzsche, Prophet of Nazism, unveils what she calls "The Nazi Secret Doctrine" or "Esoteric Nazism." According to Taha, this doctrine is "purely Nietzschean in character." Through her book, she draws a clear distinction between the hidden Hitlerian thought, which was "aristocratic, supra-national, spiritual and universal," and the "exoteric, popular, vulgar version of Nazism," which was based on Pan-German nationalism, socialism and racism. Taha reveals the "spiritual pagan Aryanism" she found inherent in both doctrines.

By taking this stance, Taha has created a unique, intelligent and innovative portrayal of Nietzsche and the Nazis because the book shows both the real Nazi doctrine, which "goes beyond nationalism and biological racism," as well as Nietzsche's "hidden eugenicist, spiritual and universal Aryanism." Taha explains each in detail while establishing a clear, direct link between these two doctrines by analyzing Nazism in the light of Nietzsche's philosophy. From religious beliefs to views on power, morality and superiority, the book exposes the seams that Taha believes hold the two ideologies together in world history.

A unique portrayal of the link between one of the most controversial philosophers and one of the most enigmatic political groups in history, Nietzsche, Prophet of Nazism reveals the depths of the spiritual, racial and political dynamics of their philosophies and the impact they have had on the world.

5 out of 5 stars Profound Wisdom.......2007-07-31

Over the years, I have bought and listened to well over 100 tape/cd sets produced by Nightingale Conant. This is one of the very best of the 100!

Although I am big fan of Debbie Ford's "Best Year of Your Life" book, the darkness of her other titles had me bypassing her other books. I came across this CD set and was intrigued with what seemed to be a more upbeat message. Wow, am I glad that somehow I connected (there are no accidents!).

I smiled to myself when, on the audio, Debbie called herself the Queen of Darkness...for that is exactly how I thought of her. Note the past tense. I now see her as the Light of Peace, showing us how we can take dark moments from our past and reframe them to be guiding lights for a better future.

Like Joe Caruso, whom I fortunately discovered the same week and recommend equally highly (his CD set is entitled "The Principles of Authentic Power"), Debbie does a great job of explaining how our story guides so much of our behaviors. Both Debbie and Joe use a presentation style that is like a "fireside chat", as opposed to the "in your face" style preferred by some speakers/authors. Note, if you need fire and brimstone to hear a message, this CD set is not for you. On the other hand, if you have a mind open to change, this CD set can have a profound impact on you.

The above publisher's information summarizes well the content. What I want to add is that what that content has the potential to do for listeners is to speed one's journey to the sense of deep peace that is so important to our health and personal performance.

Away with the Queen of Darkness...Debbie Ford you are a Light of Peace. And, that is a good thing!

Debbie Ford is a unique person in the healing field. Her ideas on the shadow are right on. I recommend all her books.

That being said, I have a huge problem with her over marketing and she seems to think that her model is the only one out there.

She is very much a business person. Although she has a good product, I feel that sometimes she forgets that she is marketing healing and not shoes. At times I question her ethics.

5 out of 5 stars The Bright Side of the Dark Side.......2005-04-16

I have had a hard time in the past listening to Debbie Ford because her voice is a little boring, but this time I just pictured her as my girlfriend on Prozac sitting across the table from me and we got along great. After just a few minutes you pick up on her genuineness and feel her emotions as she relates her personal story. She hit upon insights to the past and how the bad things have gone on to create good things in our present self. I nearly fell over with a revelation about me, after one of her meditations. I have since purchased this set for three friends and each one has said the same thing, it is lifechanging.
You can start to collect your fragments and bring them back and love them.

Book Description

Situated high in the Peruvian Andes, the fifteenth-century Inca palace complex at Machu Picchu is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the world. In this beautifully illustrated book, leading American and Peruvian scholars provide an unprecedented overview of the site, its place within the Inca empire, the mysteries surrounding its establishment and abandonment, and the discoveries made there since the excavations by archaeologist Hiram Bingham III in the early twentieth century. Drawing upon the most recent scientific findings, the authors vividly describe the royal estate in the cloud forest where the Inca emperor and his guests went to escape the pressures of the capital. In addition to Bingham's exciting account of his first expedition in 1911, the book includes new and archival photographs of the site as well as color illustrations and explanations of some 120 gold, silver, ceramic, bone, and textile works recovered at Machu Picchu.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely Underwhelmed.......2005-11-17

Having recently visited Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail I wanted to obtain a first-rate "coffee-table" style book to commemorate my experience and to render handy various names for various sights I saw along the way. When in Peru I saw several marvelous, fat volumes which contained all the information, photgraphs and poetic insight about the awesome Inca people and their accomplishments that I would ever desire. I figured I could score one off of Amazon once I returned home.

Alas, I saw none of those titles listed as currently available. This book appeared to be the best available, but it falls way short of those that I had seen in Peruvian bookstores. Slender, with only a handful of small color photos, and several older, blurry photos taken by or of Bingham (all of which I've seen countless times before), this book was really close to being sent right back to Amazon. However, there is a section in the back which contains some nice photos of various Inca artifacts which (coupled with the hassle of sending stuff back) inspired me to keep the book. I learned the sharp, bronze item I bought in Cusco is called a "knife." (I'd been incorrectly calling it a "ceremonial knife-like thing with which I think they sacrificed alpacas.")

Anyway, don't be too impressed by the publisher, "Yale Press." The name perhaps sounds compelling, but scrounge around at your local used bookstore and I'm sure you can do way better for your library.

3 out of 5 stars Inca Sacrifices and The Reasons Given........2005-09-28

Ten years ago, I read a book about the child sacrifices the Inca civilization carried out at Machu Picchu. It has stuck with me all these years and, when I saw the Nova program, "Ice Mummies" all of that disturbing feeling came back. How could they do that to the children?!

The first known Incas, a noble family who ruled Cuzco and a small surrounding high Andean agricultural state, date back to A.D. 1200. The growth of the empire beyond Cuzco began in 1438 when emperor Pachacuti, which means "he who transforms the earth," strode forth from Cuzco to conquer the world around him and bring the surrounding cultures into the Inca fold. Consolidation of a large empire was to become a continuing struggle for the ruling Inca as their influence reached across many advanced cultures of the Andes. The name "Inca" refers to the first royal family and the 40,000 descendants who ruled the empire. For centuries historians have used the term in reference to the nearly 100 nations conquered by the Inca. The Inca state's domain was unprecedented, its rule resulting in a universal language - a form of Quechua, a religion worshipping the sun, and a 14,000 mile-long road system criss-crossing high Andean mountain passes and linking the rulers with the ruled.

What remains of the Inca legacy is limited, as the conquistadors plundered what they could of Inca treasures and in so doing, dismantled the many structures painstakingly built by Inca craftsmen to house the precious metals. Remarkably, a last bastion of the Inca empire remained unknown to the Spanish conquerors and was not found until explorer Hiram Bingham discovered it in 1911. He had found Machu Picchu, a citadel atop a mountainous jungle along the Urubamba River in Peru. Grand steps and terraces with fountains, lodgings, and shrines flank the jungle-clad pinnacle peaks surrounding the site. It was a place of worship to the sun god, the greatest deity in the Inca pantheon.

Mummies-named after the bitumen tar, mum, used to coat the linen winding strips around them-have long held an almost magical fascination. The world was titillated by Egypt's elaborate cult of death and by the extreme care devoted to preserving bodies for eternity. It was not uncommon in the 1800s to pick up a box of "mummy pills" made of ground, compressed mummies; they were thought to impart some measure of the eternal. The mummy of a pharaoh's son stood on the bar of a venerable men's club in Boston until the late 1960s, when he was returned to his homeland.

We have come to understand "mummy" as meaning a remarkably preserved body, a corpse that has withstood decay and putrefaction. By design or accident, the corpse's dissolution has been arrested, the effects of time slowed, and this human form, with its trappings and ornaments and clothing, becomes the physical representation of another time. A time machine bearing both gifts of knowledge, and prickly questions as to how best to handle the remains.

Similar kinds of questions hold sway whenever a mummy is unearthed. Decay and controversy attended the removal and study of Inca children, even the one found dressed as a commoner. The girls were killed by a skull fracture, being hit in the head. The more recent the remains, the more controversial they are likely to be. Witness the contentious debate in the United States over the bones of Native Americans, both those uncovered in archeological sites and those already housed in museums. Many people would argue that the dead, whether recent or thousands of years old, should be left to rest in peace, undisturbed.

That would be so if it were a proper burial, but there are those who would destroy the mummified remains to get the Inca treasure trove left with the dead.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive academic achievement, flawed in some conclusions.......2005-02-21

This book is a companion volume to the largest exhibition of Inca artifacts in the US. A complete overhaul of previous scientific investigations was done using the most modern equipment and techniques of contemporary archaeology. Although it builds on the work of Hiram Bingham, some of Bingham's conclusions were wrong, and are corrected here. The quality of the book itself, which includes many color photographs including a catalogue of all the pieces in the exhibit, is first-rate. Those new to Machu Picchu and the Inca, or those with an in-depth knowledge of the subject will find something of value in this book. I found the chapter on the contemporary significance of Machu Picchu to be particularly interesting.

However, the authors describe Machu Picchu as a 'summer palace', likening it to Camp David. Anyone who has been there and/or seriously investigated the spiritual practices of the Inca and the the wide-ranging impact of those practices (even to the present day), will understand that this was a place of the highest spirituality, not a place of recreation for the royalty.
