5 out of 5 stars Should be a standard in schools........2007-09-23

This book should have be required reading for any graphic designs school. Being a graphic designer myself, I must say that this book is a valueable tool to sellings and building strong brands. It would have been great to have in school.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a great read!.......2007-08-27

I am in the brand-redesign phase with a local brand/identity designer and purchased your book for additional guidance. It is a truly a great read!

5 out of 5 stars Great Client Education book.......2007-08-02

This has wonderfully designed graphics and charts explaining the identity design process. This is a really good client education book, explaining the design process, why they need design, what identity design consists of, etcetera. I was looking for a book like this to explain to clients why they need identity design, what good it does, what it consists of and why their company cannot do without it any longer.

I also think it would be a good book to use to explain to family members, friends and neighbors "what you do." It would be a good book for someone who wants to start their own graphic design business, who is considering graphic design as their field of study, or who wants to convince others that graphic design is important. I recommend it highly for MARKETING professionals and those in ADVERTISING.

You big, giant companies that have lots of mulah can give this away as a gift to your clients, or use this as a book to set on a coffee table in the waiting room or something. But I am going to use it to explain to clients why identity design is important.

This book is not good for teaching graphic designers about creating brand identity. It is stuff we graphic designers were practically born knowing. But if you are a graphic designer who wants brand identity jobs, get it! It will help you turn your potential clients into clients.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Branding!.......2007-07-30

I boght this book hoping it would be useful for me in creating a brand for my new company, I must say the book has been a fantastic tool for this purpose!

The book is full of practical examples and shows you in a step by step process how to create and build a brand. If you a building a company and/or launching a product branding will be the key to success. this book is a great tool!

3 out of 5 stars It's just fine.......2007-07-16

Another compendium of conventional marketing advice and wisdom. Better- written than some, more thorough than others. A good beginner's text.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Six Sigma DFSS .......2007-05-13

I learned statistics back in the university then never applied concepts and after some 10 years I was challenged to undertake basic statistics matters in the way of learning Six Sigma. This book is very focused on the variation and the graphical interpretation of data. Yuo may read this book over a weekend then attack Six Sima stats without pain.

4 out of 5 stars Interpreting data is about the patterns, not the points.......2007-03-07

This is not a book for people looking for the technical detail of data analysis or statistical process control. The pearl in this book is the message that interpreting your data (such as KPIs or performance measures) is about looking at patterns, not at individual points. It's a book that can be read by people not interested in the technical stuff (such as managers or executives) - and it *should* be read by these people. We have to move beyond the days of comparing this month to last month to judge business performance, and this book is a great step in the right direction!

5 out of 5 stars The best concept book for non-technical people.......2007-03-07

I would agree that the details in the book are very, very basic. But that is what makes this so great in my opinion. Most organizations are focused on very small changes in numbers - something moved by a tenth of a percent, the punishments or celebrations must begin immediately - that are, in fact, not driven by anything anyone "did". I have worked with people who were very focused on the "moment". This book is excellent at communicating why that may not be the best way to manage a business. This is written for a business person, not someone who loves statistics, and for that audience the message comes across very, very well.

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-01-15

My order came in complete, damage free, and actualy shipped early. I'm very satisfied with this purchase through Amazon.

2 out of 5 stars Very superficial.......2006-12-12

Wheeler has only one premise: plot everything on an XmR chart and watch for outliers or trends. The entire book has very little other technical suggestions for data analysis. Wheeler's mathematical detail is extremely weak. For example, he doesn't show where any of the multiplicative factors come from nor does he give references. The same depth of knowledge can be gained in 10 minutes with a Google search.

Book Description

Denys Finch Hatton was adored by women and idolized by men. A champion of Africa, legendary for his good looks, his charm, and his prowess as a soldier, lover, and hunter, Finch Hatton inspired Karen Blixen to write the unforgettable stories in Out of Africa. Now esteemed British biographer Sara Wheeler tells the truth about this extraordinarily charismatic adventurer.

Born to an old aristocratic family that had gambled away most of its fortune, Finch Hatton grew up in a world of effortless elegance and boundless power. Tall and graceful, with the soul of a poet and an athlete’s relaxed masculinity, he became a hero without trying at Eton and Oxford. In 1910, searching for novelty and danger, Finch Hatton arrived in British East Africa and fell in love–with a continent, with a landscape, with a way of life that was about to change forever.

Wheeler brilliantly conjures the mystical beauty of Kenya at a time when teeming herds of wild animals roamed unmolested across pristine savannah. No one was more deeply attuned to this beauty than Finch Hatton–and no one more bitterly mourned its passing when the outbreak of World War I engulfed the region in a protracted, bloody guerrilla conflict. Finch Hatton was serving as a captain in the Allied forces when he met Karen Blixen in Nairobi and embarked on one of the great love affairs of the twentieth century.

With delicacy and grace, Wheeler teases out truth from fiction in the liaison that Blixen herself immortalized in Out of Africa. Intellectual equals, bound by their love for the continent and their inimitable sense of style, Finch Hatton and Blixen were genuine pioneers in a land that was quickly being transformed by violence, greed, and bigotry.
Ever restless, Finch Hatton wandered into a career as a big-game hunter and became an expert bush pilot; his passion that led to his affair with the notoriously unconventional aviatrix Beryl Markham. But Markham was no more able to hold him than Blixen had been. Mesmerized all his life by the allure of freedom and danger, Finch Hatton was, writes Wheeler, “the open road made flesh.”

In painting a portrait of an irresistible man, Sara Wheeler has beautifully captured the heady glamour of the vanished paradise of colonial East Africa. In Too Close to the Sun she has crafted a book that is as ravishing as its subject.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Lackluster.......2007-08-24

This book contained no new information but simply rehashed and quoted extensively from previous books. The writing is lackluster, repetitive, and very awkward in some places; it did not receive proper copyediting. Extremely disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars a life changer.......2007-08-22

Why some books win prizes and others do not eludes me; this one is a prize winner.
Too Close to the Sun has set me on a worthy adventure to understand the Victorian/Edwardian cusp especially in British Africa and for this I am thankful because those were glory days.
Through Ms. Wheeler I have met persons Much More Interesting than me and my friends. Her dogged research has invigorated my life. For her reader's delight, the author darns together memories, letters, and written data concerning a self-effacing gentleman, Denys Finch Hatton. Luckily for us we may now tag along in the glow of his charisma and be voyeurs of his well-born and lively acquaintances. We may celebrate with African settlers as they host a wilderness New Year's dinner 'comme il faut', we may sit in our a.c. as British soldiers portage battleships across a brutal continent during WWI, we may brush dust off our jackets after cavalierly shooting two charging lions with a double-barreled shotgun, we may politely manoevre and entertain a persnickity Prince of Wales.
I thank Ms. Wheeler for her Fascination of What's Difficult, to paraphrase Mr. Yeats, because pulling together a three-dimensional picture of This Time using only carefully chosen evidence is difficult and more honest than throwing together hearsay and calling it a book.
Her talent as a lover of language is evident as she brings us the scents, sounds, atmosphere, gossip, innuendo, mores, jokes, custom, and emotion that enliven her facts and put feet in Finch Hatton's footsteps. Ms. Wheeler's pages rebuild that World before the Wars that we 21st centuriers can't understand and most often wrongly judge.

I sprinted to the bookstore for more news of the largely-lived lives mentioned throughout Too Close To The Sun. I'm now hooked on the soap opera of the Blixens (the 2nd Mrs.,too), Lord Delamere, the Masai, Lord Carberry, various British Generals, the younger Mr. Roosevelt.... I can't think of any group more instructive to learn about!
Beryl Markham's West With the Night was my next read. What a woman, and how fascinating to get to know her from her own writing, so different than her appearance in TCTTS. I have ordered Bror Blixen's African Hunter, to catch his and Dr. Turvey's viewpoint on the Kenyan crowd. I plan to read Elspeth Huxley's book about growing up on a coffee plantation. Like craning to hear the whispered name of someone you love, I want to hear again the names that Ms. Wheeler has called forth.

4 out of 5 stars A good background on Finch Hatton and Africa of the times.......2007-07-30

While the early phases of Finch Hatton's life is a bit dry, and the author makes reference to a lot of different friends/relatives of Finch Hatton's--which is a bit tedious and difficult to follow--she does a great job of providing the historical context to his life and that of his friends, including Blix and Dinesen. Overall, it's a very well written historical biography... makes me want to go back and watch "Out of Africa" again.

5 out of 5 stars Snapshot of the unique society of British East Africa.......2007-06-08

Ever since I saw the movie "Out of Africa" I have been captivated with the lives of Karen Blixen, Beryl Markham and Denys Finch Hatton. "Too Close to the Sun" focuses on the unique life of Denys and tries to explain how and why he lived his life according to his own rules.
The book also describes the history of British East Africa or Kenya as we now know it.
This biography was a facinating read and hard to put down!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Too Close to the Sun"- Denys Finch Hatton.......2007-06-02

This account reads like a novel. All the facts are backed up adequately. I would rate it highly for telling the love story and presenting the exotic background of Africa with this man acting out his life's dream.

4 out of 5 stars Gives You the Scoop on Pee and Poop.......2007-06-09

I have a six-year-old with Autism who is yet to be potty trained. I was beside myself until I purchased this manual. Now, I understand more about his point of view when it comes to learning this new task. I was perplexed by his ability to control his bladder and bowel, but his unwillingness to use the toilet. It never occurred to me that using the bathroom could cause anxiety or that I needed to provide a calm and relaxing atmosphere for him while he was on the toilet.

What I like most about this book is that it gives you not only an overview but solutions and ideas for making a very important milestone in your child's life possible. Any parent of a child with learning disabilities wants their child to be able to assimilate into society as much as possible. This book helps to knock down one more wall standing in the way of social acceptance.

5 out of 5 stars toilet training for the autistic.......2007-01-05

I had been struggling with toilet training my autistic child. This book gave me a better understanding of what autistic children experience when toilet training them. It gave me different techniques and helpful hints to toilet training my child. It was so helpful that I purchased a copy for his teacher.

5 out of 5 stars A difficult task made easier!.......2006-07-01

I am so thankful that I chose this book over others that deal with toilet training. I did not realize how teaching someone on the spectrum how to use the potty is very different in many ways, than someone who's not. This book deals with those issues. It brings to light some very important routines and activities to follow. Especially for someone who is new to the world of Autism, this is a book that I highly recommend that you include in your library.

    5 out of 5 stars great ideas!.......2006-06-26

If you ever thought that toilet training was no big deal, try training a child with special needs...a whole different story. This book gives some great tips on how to go about it when the odds are against you. Determining readiness, common problems and solutions and developing a routine, are just some of the topics covered in this book. It is a must have for special ed. teachers as well as parents of individuals with autism and related disorders. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful - explains what 's going on from your child's perspective.......2005-10-14

While we successfully opted to use a different training method to train our 4 year-old dughter- this book was very good at making sense out of our daughter's behavior. An autistic child can really be a challange to understand under normal curcumstances- the volume goes waaaaaay up when potty training. We would highly recommend this book to anyone getting ready to take on this very big job. Take what you can from this book and choose the method that feels most likely to work. Be committed. Chin up. You can do it. Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read if You Want to Build a Corporate University.......2005-02-20

Kevin Wheeler makes it clear early on in his book that successful corporate universities must go beyond traditional training. Learning goes far beyond training, incorporating a wide range of informal learning processes and activities. This differentiates this book from much of what has been written in the past about corporate universities--focusing on mostly course-oriented training. Wheeler takes the reality of broad-based learning in organizations into account and provides a very detailed and practical guide for building a successful and flexbible corporate university. The book contains lots of templates and practical lists with questions and issues that must be addressed by someone building a corporate university. Each chapter begins with a review of an unsuccessful and a successful example of corporate universities, making it clear that success is by no means guaranteed. But the probability of success will no doubt be much higher for those who do their homework and not only read this book but complete the numerous exercises that Wheeler has carefully prepared to assist those ready to build a corporate university meant to transform an organization into a 21st century learning organization.

      Book Description

Richly illustrated and clearly focused, this book surveys the genesis, development, and culmination of modern European/American painting, sculpture, architecture, and conceptual art—from Post-Impressionism through the most recent developments in the 1990s. It avoids the typical encyclopedic approach of surveys in favor of examining selected but highly representative works in greater depth and from an enlarged spectrum of critical discourse. Organized along chronological lines, topics explore the ideas, forms, events, artists, and works—with each chapter devoted to a style, movement, or decade—from Cézanne, Seurat, Gauguin, and Van Gogh through Minimalism and the general reaction known as Post-Modernism. Ideal for readers with a general

      Book Description

Written by a technician for technicians, this book fills the gap between communications books that are either highly mathematical (suitable for engineers) or technically weak (not enough detail for technical learners). Using an algebra-based approach that does NOT sacrifice depth of coverage, it uses plain language and an abundance of examples and case studies to explore real circuits, systems, and their troubleshooting. Coverage includes electronic communications technologies, beginning with coverage of signals and modulation methods and ranging through the most current communications techniques, including cellular, PCS, GPS, and HDTV, and TCP/IP. The text gives comprehensive troubleshooting information as well as instruction in the correct use of test equipment in the field. This textbook is appropriate for undergraduate studies in analog and digital electronic communications and networking fundamentals, especially those courses aimed at practitioners in the field (technicians), but also possibly engineering technologists. It can be used to fulfill both analog and digital communications tracks in a curriculum.

5 out of 5 stars Great Technician Review.......2007-04-04

This book is as advertised, a book written from the technicians viewpoint, with clear simple explanations and examples. It does not get bogged down in useless overcalculations, but keeps the math simple and to the point. The important change in this book is the way it explains the operations of components, circuitry, etc in a new easier to understand way.

      Book Description

The newest procedures. The latest information. The complete rundown on modern pregnancy and childbirth...for women who want the facts.

Every intelligent, informed woman is used to gathering the most complete information she can get before making a decision. But when it comes to one of the most important decisions in her life--how she will give birth--it can be tough to get the complete picture, even from an obstetrician. Based on the latest medical studies and literature, The Thinking Woman's Guide To A Better Birth offers clear, concise information on tests, procedures and treatments--and gives advice about:* cesareans * ultrasound * gestational diabetes * breech babies * inducing labor * IVs * electronic fetal monitoring * ruptured membranes * epidurals * episiotomies * vaginal birth after a cesarean * midwives and obstetricians * alternative birthing methods * choosing a birth location * drugs and delivery * elective induction * professional labor support * and much more

3 out of 5 stars Good for research information.......2007-10-01

Like many other reviewers said this book is biased. The author gives this disclaimer at the beginning and how her purpose for the book is in hoping to revert her readers to her opinions and beliefs. I found it good for offering up research statistics and pros and cons of all interventions during childbirth. It's good to read and read other things and then decide what choices are right for you.

3 out of 5 stars A little over the top, but good info.......2007-09-28

This book provides the other side of the story as it relates to common birth practices in hospitals today. Definitely good information, but you can't take everything at face value. The author takes an emotional (angry) tone, and that emotion seems to have clouded some of her ability to be objective about the facts. Read it, and make up your own mind.

5 out of 5 stars Ought to be on every pregnant woman's reading list early.......2007-09-19

I recommend this to everyone I know who is pregnant - whether or not it's their first child. Women have a right to know what technology can and can not do in order to make "informed choices" about their birthing expectations and experience. (This is the "everywoman's" conterpart to Ms. Goer's more practitioner-oriented *Obstetrical Myths vs. Research Realities,* for any more "tech-y" or medically literate readers.)

5 out of 5 stars Not an "All Approaches to Birth are Equal" Book.......2007-08-12

You will NOT like this book if you're looking for a book that presents all options as being equal. You will not read, "When it comes to giving birth, you could do "A." That's a great choice. Or you could do "B," which is just as good. And then there's "C", and if you choose to give birth that way, well that's as good as "A" or "B"." Do not buy this book if you want all your "options" laid out as perfectly equal and beneficial choices for birth. The author clearly states that she is not "neutral" and that she is no more objective than anyone else about what makes for optimal care.

The author clearly states that she believes that "midwifery care is superior to medical management for low- and moderate-risk pregnant women" and that obstetricians are specialists who should only care for women who have high-risk pregnancies. She claims that her book "establishes that the routine or indiscriminate use of medical tests, procedures, drugs and restrictions - the hallmark of obstetric management - does far more harm than good." This claim she backs up with an amazing amount of studies and research.

This book will cause you to think about all the things you thought were "normal" and "necessary" parts of labor and birth. It will make you question why the huge majority of Western women are cared for by obstetricians and deliver in hospitals, when most of them have healthy pregnancies. And if the author accomplishes her goal, it will give you the ability to decide what is right for you.

You WILL like this book if you believe childbirth to be a fundamentally normal and healthy event in a woman's life, not to be treated as a medical procedure that needs to be "managed." You will like this book if you want to learn how to avoid all unnecessary interventions and to start small when intervention becomes necessary.

You don't need to be planning a homebirth with a midwife in order for this book to be beneficial. If you simply want to be empowered to have birth that is individualized to YOU, where your labor and delivery is respected as a personal experience, and where you have the right to make informed decisions about the procedures you and your baby are subjected to, read this book.

If you want to play a more passive role in your birth and have it "managed" for you by a specialist, don't bother with this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not for a woman who wants a medicated birth.......2007-08-08

This book was very much against hospital births and epidurals. I didn't like that the author assumed every woman would want to birth HER WAY. An epidural birth can still be a very wonderful birth experience. I got to enjoy my medicated VBAC because I was not in any pain and I could concentrate on what I was there to do - push out and birth a baby. I know women who have done birthing both ways and they were successful either way you look at it. You can be a THINKING WOMAN and still have a wonderful epidural or hospital birth. Reading this book is fine if you want a home birth or an unmedicated birth.
