Book Description

The United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire stand on the brink of war. Captain James T. Kirk and the Starship Enterprise™ are sent back to System 7348 -- site of a previous skirmish with the Klingons -- for a confrontation with the I.K.S. D'k Tahg under the command of Captain Koloth.

Even as the two great ships face each other, trouble is brewing among their crews. On the Enterprise, Lieutenant Leslie Parrish is pregnant with a half-Klingon child and must face a critical decision about her future, while Section Chief Michael Fuller still carries the wounds of the twenty-five-year-old Battle of Donatu V, of which he was one of the few survivors -- not to mention his grief over the death of his son, recently killed in battle against the Klingons.

On the D'k Tahg, First Officer Karel finds himself trapped between the scheming, dishonorable Councillor Duras and his commanding officer, Koloth. While the stakes only seem to be the possession of a single star system, the ramifications may spread throughout the Klingon Empire, as they find themselves at a crossroads between conquest and honor!

The two Errand trilogies are fun reads. Not a great deal of depth but a fast moving plot with a good TOS feel. Well worth the read.

Kevin Ryan has written another amazing chapter delving into the exciting world of the Klingon empire. This book describes the Klingon perspective dead-on and tells a great story about the events proceeding an inevitable Federation/Klingon war. It is an exciting read and a must-buy for any ST fan. I can't wait for the next in the series!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very cool to have for any Star Trek fan........2007-08-24

This book is excellent. It has everything (and I'm not exagerating here) you need to learn Klingon. The information is well organized and it's easy to learn the basics. And the dictionary is quite large, so it's easy to translate just about anything you can think of. Some English-to-Klingon phrases can get confusing sometimes because the Klingon translation isn't word for word with English. So, if you're a big fan of Star Trek, or you want to learn another language, this book is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars more of a reference than a learning guide........2007-06-03

This book is full of all the grammar and words you'll need to get a basic knowledge of Klingon, but it is all presented more as a reference. I've been through several languages, and while tools such as this are an indispensable aid to learning, they're not always the best way to approach a language. A textbook format learning guide would be better for a beginner, one that chops the vocabulary and grammar up into sections rather than presenting it all at once. But for what it is, it's great.

5 out of 5 stars A Cool Reference To Have For Fans.......2007-04-15

This is a really cool book if you want to know what certain words are in Klingon, but to actually learn the language, it will take a lot of time. This book goes into great detail about how to pronounce words and where they belong in a sentence. This is like learning any other language, and it won't be easy to learn, but it is still really fun to have and read. I'm trying to learn, but it will take a while.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for a trekkie........2007-03-09

This was given as a gift and when opened was met with a "whoop." I guess that says it all.

4 out of 5 stars What a find!.......2007-03-09

Fantastic! I bought 2... one for myself and another for a friend - you always need a practice partner when you decide to start learning a new language! What a hoot! Has great words, expressions and a section on the correct pronunciation of each 'letter'. Also includes a section on syntax and grammar. More than just a 'dictionary'!!

5 out of 5 stars ..........2002-09-13

"A warrior fights to the death." That quote alone speaks volumes about "The Klingon Way." Star Trek Klingon for the Galactic Traveler is an excellent addition to your Star Trek library. Not long after reading through this book, I almost felt as if this were a real culture I was reading about. Some of the Star Trek "extras," as like to call them are at best, superfluous. That is not the case in this book. If you're even remotely interested in or intrigued by the Klingons, this book is worth the price. My only complaint, as with other Star Trek "extras," is that it's peppered with black & white photos. Thank you very much to the author for this one.

Klingon for the Galactic Traveler builds on the introductory studies of Klingon culture and language introduced in The Klingon Dictionary. For those who want to learn more about Klingons, what they eat, how they think, feel, etc., Klingon for the Galactic Traveler is a fine place to start your quest for knowledge of Klingons.

Prepared by the Klingon Language Institute, The Klingon Hamlet presents full English and Klingon versions of Shakespeare's play side by side. Only experienced Klingon speakers will be able to fully appreciate the nuances of the Klingon-language version, but for anyone who has dabbled in the language, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire large chunks of authentic text to practice on. Most of the vocabulary used can be found in either The Klingon Dictionary or Klingon for the Galactic Traveler.

For non-Klingon speakers, there is Shakespeare's original text, an English-language introduction, and detailed endnotes, very wittily presented. These put forward the case that Shakespeare himself was a Klingon, and underline the essentially Klingon nature of this famous play, with its themes of honor and revenge. In creating the tragic figure of Hamlet, with his very un-Klingon propensity for brooding and procrastination, Shakespeare is believed to have been commenting on a culture becoming alienated from its traditional warlike virtues, and we are told that most Klingons find it a deeply disturbing play.

All in all, this is a very clever, well-presented interpretation of one of the world's most famous plays. The Klingon translation, in all the glory of its iambic pentameter, has been lovingly constructed, and is well worth the effort of reading at least a few favorite passages aloud. --Elizabeth Sourbut, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

For too long, readers throughout the Federation have been exposed to The Tragedy of Khamlet, Son of the Emperor of Qo'nos, that classic work of Klingon™ literature, only through inadequate and misleading English translations. Now at last, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Klingon Language Institute, this powerful drama by the legendary Klingon playwright, Wil'yam Shex'pir, can be appreciated in the elegance and glory of its original tongue.

This invaluable volume contains the complete text of the play, along with an

English translation for easy consultation and comparison. In addition, an incisive introduction explains the play's crucial importance in Klingon culture, while copious notes illustrate how the debased English version diverges from the original, often distorting and even reversing the actual meaning of the verses.

Khamlet, the Restored Klingon Version, is a work that belongs in the library of every human who hopes truly to understand what it means to be Klingon.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2004-10-03

For all those wondering whether this is worth the read, let me say the Kang was right when he said you can't appreciate hamlet unless you've read it in Klingon. Ejoy!

1 out of 5 stars Didn't like it........2004-07-29

I'd like to think that I am a Star Trek and Klingon fan, but this work was horrible. I don't believe the author knows anything about Klingons and it seems that his writing smacks of "Look how important *I* am". I'd rather read real Shakespeare if this is the only thing available. Better luck next time.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect in its own way, and thought-provoking.......2003-10-04

What a mad, hilarious enterprise this is. If anyone thinks this is merely a discharge of nerdishness, let them try and translate a whole Shakespeare play in ANY language - let alone one in which expressions and ways of thought have to be invented along with metre and rhyme. And as a matter of fact, this is not merely a well-made piece of whimsy: the emphasis of its "critical" parts on the warrior identity of "Khamlet" and the meaning of his sense of disgrace provide a useful, thought-provoking contrast to much of the "terran" critical tradition, which tends to neglect that Hamlet is a prince, a swordsman, a potential military leader, and that the warrior Fortinbras thought that "He was likely, had he been put on/ To have proved most royal".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek Klingon.......2002-11-02

Star Trek Klingon is a wonderful audio experience. It is narrated by Michael Dorn (Lt. Cmdr Worf) and Robert O'Reilly (Chancellor Gowron). The main character is a young Klingon named Pok. He is thrust into the center of Klingon politics, when on the day of his Rite of Ascension his father is murdered in his own home. Chancellor Gowron immediately takes young Pok under his wing and sets out for revenge. The entire plot and the way it plays out is very, very good. This tape is a wonderful way to spend an hour and a half on the highway. The book makes it even better, giving you the full details of the entire story. If you're a fan of Klingons and you've not picked this one up yet, you're wrong.

2 out of 5 stars An Unjustified Crossover.......2001-08-06

Crossovers rarely work. Period.

That is one of the constants with working with a spinn-off series consept.

Star Trek: Klingon is a novelization of the CD-ROM with the same title, wich, I should note, I've never played. In the novelization Gowron tells the story of the CD-ROM at Quark's bar. He happens to be on DS9 because a Federation-Klingon peace negotiation just happens to take place there, and it also just happens that the crew of the Enterprise-D are present.

The novel doesn't offer any insight to the characters. Old or-Universe forbit-new. And- most dissapointingly- we learn absolutely nothing new about Klingons.

In fact the story could as easily have been told without involving DS9 as the setting of the storytelling sessions or the Enterprise crew as additional and useles characters, and those aspects of the novel seem to hold no purpose whatsoever. So in the end it became apparent that they were only includet to show DS9 and TNG cast work together, wich they really don't even do.

I have nothing against crossovers between the series. On the contrary. But there must be some logical reason to unite the different series. Star Trek: Klingon doesn't offer any.

For example; one of the few things the makers of Voyager did right was to show what happened in the alpha Quadrant conserning Voyager after they found out about it being whole and relatively well in the Delta Quadrant.

They needet a boost in ratings, and they managet to make a succesfullm crossover, because the characters involved with Voyager on Earth were Lt. Reginald Barclay, and through him, Commander Troi. It wasn't forced crossover. It was continuity.

I admit that as far as the stories went, the characters needen't have been our familiar TNG friends, but it was much less obvious than that horribly written appearence of Scotty in- analytically- one of the worst episodes of TNG: "Relics", the best example of desparately pathetic attemts of continuity and grounding a weak story completely in the appearance of a familiar face.

Star Trek: Klingon was even worse. There wasn't even a forced reason to unite the crews. Backed with an entertaining, but short and aimless story containing no real insight on the Klingon mind and culture, missing characterization, and endless clichés, we get a Star Trek books that hasn't got anything to do with the potential in creating a Klingon based story.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting frame story........2000-05-04

There are really two stories here, artfully interwoven: the story of young Pok's coming of age, an interesting look into Klingon culture, as told by Gowron while he is taking part in Klingon-Federation negotiations on Deep Space Nine, and the story of those negotiations themselves, and the attempts to sabotage them and assassinate Gowron.

The stories are interesting, the characters artfully handled, and the writing good (with the exception of a couple of what I'm willing to assume, given the quality of the rest of the writing, to be typographical and copy-editing errors rather than flaws on the part of the writing itself).

This book is not identified on its cover with a specific generation of Star Trek; this usually indicates that it is set in the original series. Don't be fooled; it is something of a hybrid between Next Generation and DS9, which is why it is not identified as either. There is nothing of the original series in it.

5 out of 5 stars A fine book.......2000-04-28

There is no reason why this book shouldn't deserve 5 stars

I loved reading how Gowron narrating the story of a young Klingon's quest for vengeance. Kudos to Messrs. Smith and Rusch.

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves six stars!.......2000-02-04

This book is about a young boy named Pok. His father is killed by a Romulan Assasin Probe, or R.A.P. for short. Pok starts out on a quest filled with danger, betrayal, and honor. His quest is all about avenging his father's death. He took the blood oath. Now he has to live it out, or die trying. The other thing that I liked about this book is the fact that it portrayed a lot about Klingon tradition, culture, and values. I think that you won't be able to put this book down- I couldn't and I loved it. If you are a Trekkie like me, this is the book for you.

Book Description

Even light-years from the Klingon Empire, the Day of Honor remains an occasion of great importance. And sometimes honor is found in the most unexpected places...

B'Elanna Torres has never cared for the Day of Honor. Ashamed of her Klingon heritage, she regards the holiday as an unwanted reminder of all she has struggled to repress. Besides, something awful always seems to happen to her then.

Her bad luck seems to be running true to form when she and Harry Kim are captured by alien slavers. Imprisoned by the enigmatic Risatti, force to mine for deadly radioactive ore, Torres will need all of her strength and cunning to survive -- and her honor as well.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quite good........2004-08-18

An excellent look into the character of B'Elanna Torres and her conflicting emotions regarding her half-Klingon nature. The characters other than B'Elanna were handled well also, and the plot, while not in itself memorable, was competently handled and was a good vehicle for the character study. The writing, as usual for Mr. Friedman, was smooth and unobtrusive.

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek Voyager: Her Klinon Soul(Day of Honor No.3).......2002-11-19

This book is my favorite Voyager book. It is action packed and full of suspence, with every turn of the page there is a nother twist thrown at you! This book keeps you on the edge of your seat until the last page! The author did a super job. I highly recomend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Gagh it ain't..........2002-04-24

This book has it's entertaining moments - mostly, they're confined to the 1st and 2nd chapter, where B'Elanna has to endure the Day of Honor good wishes of her colleagues.

What disappoints about this book is how poor the characterisations are - they feel off. Janeway definitely comes across as a bit inept and rather silly, Tom Paris comes in at the start and end (this is pre their relationship days I guess) although B'Elanna is about 60% there in terms of her portrayal. What's missing is the spark, that extra juice that makes Torres such a cool character.

The plot is okay only and the Day of Honour feels more like a calender coincidence than a real plot driver or revealing of any true character. B'Elanna's discomfort about Day of Honour is confined to how her previous DOH seem to have been like bad luck days for her.

For a better effort at B'Elanna having a bad day, the Voyager Episode 'Juggernaut' works.

5 out of 5 stars This is why I love B'Elanna........2002-03-12

While I agree that this book was probably not the soul searching story it was proclaimed to be, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The interaction between B'Elanna and Harry was wonderful all the way through. Their friendship has always been one of my favorite aspects of the show, and I think it was never given the attention it deserved. That's not the case in this book. They behave as the close friends they seemed destined to be after Caretaker.

I also really enjoyed the way Torres was portrayed in this book. She was courageous, formidable, and still very feminine. Those are the qualities that drew me to her in the first place. (Compounded by Roxann Dawson's outstanding acting.)

Perhaps it should have been a stand alone book, and not part of the Day of Honor series, but it was well written and memorable regardless. If you like B'Elanna Torres, you'll enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars This Book is a Misnomer.......2000-06-09

When I bought this book, I was looking forward to a tale focusing on B'Elanna Torres and an explanation of her conflicted emotions and past. I was disappointed. The first few chapters discussed the Day of Honor, but once they land on the planet it is forgotten and the story becomes a typical episode of the show! In fact, the show handled Day of Honor better in its episode dedicated to the topic! There were scenes that stood out in my mind. Torres holding her own and earning the respect of her fellow prisoners then leading them on a grand escape was worth the buy and well-written. I also liked seeing Torres and Kim together. Their friendship is rarely explored in these books. The plot was interesting and the characters had potential. I think this book is good, but it should stand on its own and not be part of the Day of Honor series.

Then take your 'uSDu' (fighting stance) and raise your betleH! The Master and his female co-instructor demonstrate through sequences of black-and-white photos, real offensive and defensive technique with the sickle-like blade. You'll learn to use your betleH against an opponent armed with naQ (staff) or ghIntaH (naginata), and how to fight empty-handed against a betleH-wielding adversary. By the end of your instruction, you will also be able to perform a moqbara (kata) with your weapon. The book is written in Fed-Standard (English), and contains captions and proverbs in tlhIngan-Hol, the authentic klingo-lingo. The instruction photos of the are professional quality and the Klingon costumes are quite convincing! Helpful line-diagrams show foot-positions and direction of movement. The great thing about this book is, if you have trained in Kung Fu you can actually do these exercizes. "Secret Fighting Arts of the Warrior Race" is presented seriously, even though it is intended for fandom fantasy. You won't have to search for a betleH forged in the Klingon Empire -- you can order one from the publisher of this book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction.......2002-08-06

This is an excelent introduction to the language. It has a very good pronounciation section and contains all the phrases one would need to "get by". It also has a basic vocabulary that provides a good foundation for further study.

But remember it is only an introduction. And the grammar section should be taken with a grain of salt. It mentions two different sets of "pronouns" when one is realy a set of verbal prefixs (jI- bI- ma- Su-), also it says that pronouns come at the end of a phrase this is not always true (eg. taHqeq gragh matlh'e' Maltz is a "taHqeq").

If you want to learn the basics this is an terrific buy. If you want to know more go buy The Klingon Dictionary. Qapla'!
