Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Seals and vikings oh my!.......2007-03-21

What the heck do you expect from Sandra Hill - anything less than excellence? As usual, an awesome viking/seal adventure just waiting for you to buy it, take it home and treat it right - read it!! But pay attention: this is a fantasy so don't expect reality; suspend belief (such as "there is no such thing as time travel") and just ENJOY the book. If you don't like fantasy, don't buy then review the book in a negative; that's not fair. Warning: sex scenes are R.

4 out of 5 stars Really a 3 1/2.......2006-02-12

I had some problems with this book:
1. The whole marriage thing was pretty far fetched.
2. Maddie should think about breast reduction surgery since we heard about the size of her breasts constantly.
3. She was a shrew; she was always shrieking about something & never shut up. I'm surprised Ian didn't wear ear plugs around her.
4. This is the same problem I have with many books. The male and female leads have an area of expertise due to career, training, etc. Yet one of the leads, usually the female, refuses to let that person call the shots, even though in that particular area, THEY KNOW MORE. EX: Maddie knows squat about the 21st century, has no clue about covert ops. Yet every time Ian tells her to do/not do something that he knows will be dangerous she pouts, is insulted, says it's because she's a woman and if at all possible does it anyway. Completely irresponsible, particularly as her acts can put people in a lot of danger. If she were a photographer & told Ian not to open the darkroom door she'd expect him to adhere to what she says because SHE KNOWS more about it.

I would have given it a three but I enjoyed the follow up on the earlier stories in the series and I like Sandra Hill's writing style.

Over the past few years, Madrene's Viking family has steadily been vanishing; logical probability indicates that they are dead. Despite Madrene's valor, she finds her lands overtaken by invaders and herself sold into harem after harem as a slave. However, since she tends to have an unfortunate effect on her owners' ability to make use of her as a harem girl, she never stays anywhere long. Then, out of the blue, she finds herself free, and a thousand years in the future. Madrene does not know what has happened or what to make of this new world. When she is found by a group of Navy SEALS, they at first think she's a terrorist, but soon become otherwise persuaded. A marriage of convenience, or possibly inconvenience, is the only way to get her legally into the States, and Ian MacLean is chosen as the groom. He is sure that they'll be able to annul it after she's safely established as a citizen, but he hadn't counted on attraction bringing them into a real marriage. The only problem is, Ian is convinced he's married to a lunatic who might be a terrorist, [prostitute], or burglar, albeit a pretty one. There is no way she could be so innocent of all modern things, yet she is. None of it makes a bit of sense. The only thing either is sure of is that they are falling for each other, and it can't possibly work.

**** Granted, this book is replete with places nitpickers can dismantle gleefully, such as how could a woman from the distant past, from the Viking lands, speak English? However, fans of Ms. Hill's broad humor will be pleased as she adheres to all her trademark mechanisms to create a story with zip and a heartwarming end. ****

5 out of 5 stars Easily the funniest comic strip ever........2007-06-09

That's really all I can say. It's not my favorite comic strip (that honor belongs to CALVIN AND HOBBES) but it is the laugh-out-loud funniest. BILL THE CAT LIVES!

5 out of 5 stars Bloom County Volume Two.......2004-06-16

These strips aren't just funny. They're laugh out loud, roll on the floor, tears streaming down my face, people coming into the room to see "WHAT-are-you-laughing-at?!" funny.

Berkeley Breathed has created a perfect 'toon universe populated by funny and poignant humans, along with funny and poignant penguins, groundhogs, Bill the Cat and purple critters that hide in your closet of anxieties waiting to grab you as soon as you sleep. Breathed was an absolute genius at seeing some topical issue of the day (circa 1984 for this voume) holding it up to the light so that we could see it just the way that he did, then skewering the thing with what would be the humor equivalent of cupid's arrow.

5 out of 5 stars So glad this is still in print.......2004-05-19

I had no idea this book was still around. I had picked it up in the mid-eighties, lent it to a friend in the early nineties, and it was gone. I never thought I would see it again. What a surprise to find it again. Immediately, I picked it up and started where I had left off years ago... roaring with laughter. This collection of Bloom County golden oldies is hysterical and clever. The years have been very kind to this strip because it is as fresh as it was during the Reagain administration. Pick up "Toons for Our Times: A Bloom County Book of Heavy Metal Rump 'N Roll" and laugh your rump off!

5 out of 5 stars If ever there was a reluctant hero..........2000-07-11

The first time I ever picked up a Bloom County book at a bookstore in the mall...and this was the book. After a few pages, I found myself having to close the book in order to gather my wits about me, wipe the tears off my face, then attempt to forge farther ahead...usually having to immediately close the book because glancing at the same page instantly initiated another wave of helpless laughter. Had this only happened once, I could have dealt with it as the adult that I believed myself to be...but, since it happened every few pages, I realized myself to be captivated in the tormented world of Opus and friends. Unfortunately (and much to my surprise, I didn't really care), this resulted in more than a few patrons of the bookstore in question to raise their eyebrows in my direction. I would like to thank the kind person that finally joined me (they picked up a copy of their own) and together we chortled together, pausing at times to close our books at our respective pages to momentarily regain our composure. Whimsical, thoughtful, introspective, silly, hilarious, thought-provoking...If you never read another comic, even if you think you're too old for silliness, you owe it to yourself and Berke to read this...and yes, I bought the book!

5 out of 5 stars Giggle! Chortle! Snort!.......1999-06-25

When this book first came out, I was 9. I was already reading the strip, and loved it. I've never stopped doing either. Like many other comics and cartoons, it has many levels for appreciation. It combines a genuine understanding of the overall importance of silliness, sharp and brilliant satire, and brief, poignant moments of sincere emotion. I keep copies of this book and Penguin Dreams in my car and read a page before I walk into my office most days. Happy reading!

    Book Description

The first biography of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, the revered and influential guitarist for Pantera, who was tragically murdered at the age of thirty-eight.

Black Tooth Grin is the first biography of "Dimebag" Darrell, the Texas-bred guitarist of the heavy metal band Pantera, who, along with three audience members, was murdered on stage by a deranged fan in 2004--twenty-four years to the day after John Lennon met a similar fate.

Darrell Abbott began as a teenage guitar prodigy, inspired by Kiss and winning local talent contests. With his brother, drummer Vinnie Abbott, Pantera was formed, and it became one of the most popular and influential metal bands of the '90s, selling tens of millions of albums such as Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power to an intensely devoted fan base. In contrast to the band's aggressive music, "Dime" was outgoing and gregarious, devoted to his craft, and adored by just about everyone who knew him.

From Pantera's heyday to their implosion following singer Phil Anselmo's heroin addiction, from the band Damageplan to Darrell Abbott's tragic end, Black Tooth Grin is a must for anyone who misses this guitar legend.

    Book Description

The result of an extensive poll asking heavy metal fans to list their favorite heavy metal albums, this compendium combines those survey results with interviews of dozens of world-famous rockers who reveal recording session secrets in addition to their own favorite albums. From AC/DC to ZZ Top and from Black Sabbath to Pantera, both classics and lesser-known gems are catalogued and idiosyncratically evaluated. Beginning with reviews of early metal albums of the 1960s and continuing through current hits, the book blends praise and condemnation for the most influential and important heavy metal recordings. Also featured are appendices that revel in mountains of metal minutia.

5 out of 5 stars The Top 500 of All Time? Probably not, but..........2007-05-19

This is not the author's favorite albums, otherwise Max Webster would be in the Top 50. This book is the best way so far of knowing which albums are the best at least in the collective consciousness of the metal community, by virtue of being a poll (many votes were cast, sadly I wasn't around back then). Otherwise, you would have to listen to the biased opinions of a single person, whose preferences/age/amount of music heard will yield different results every time.

But if certain albums appeared frequently when asking many people for such a list of "Best of All Time", then they may be on to something. Compile these frequent mentions and you get this book. And while you may not want to read anymore about the legendary output of Black Sabbath, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, etc. (although no one could ever deny their influence) this book still has plenty of variety, with bands I didn't know like Kick Axe or Coroner. Some people could argue about the merit of including Grunge, Hair Metal, Nu Metal, or Hard Rock (from Hendrix to Guns N Roses) or the positions of certain albums, but this kind of book is all about starting new arguments.

You also get Popoff's reviews to know if the album is worth the hype (he doesn't always think so, and he is a pretty good reviewer) plus bits of artists' interviews on their own albums, their own lists and a few appendixes.

At the very least, I give it 5 Stars because it made me discover Strapping Young Lad

    1 out of 5 stars Top 500? Hardly. .......2005-06-07

I bought the book because his metal encyclopedia was so rich and fascinating. But this one is dross. These top 500 were NOT EVEN PICKED BY HIM. The selections are from a poll he conducted. And all it has are the same old tired entries you'd expect. (Just about every Sab album, etc) Waste of money.

    4 out of 5 stars A Great Read!.......2005-04-01

I spent a lot of time reading through this (I read through this one but not the song one, I didn't find it as interesting). I realised that most metalheads think the same. The top 5 was exactly as I predicted it would be. Author Martin Popoff obviously spent a lot of time writing this book and it makes for a good read. I enjoyed reading his comments, seeing him agree with the voters and seeing him not (Screaming For Vengeance, hee hee). The band members comments on how albums were put together and stuff like that made it even better, and adding there lists of favourite album was an excellent touch! So why didn't I give the great book 5 stars? I found that some of it was a little repetitive and some of the albums mentioned in this book I would not consider to be heavy metal (Sex Pistols= Punk, Slipknot/Korn/Godsmack= Nu-Metal, Nirvana= Grunge etc...). But all of that aside this was a cool book, and a must for metalheads (who enjoy reading) and for listmania freaks!

    5 out of 5 stars you're all idiots.......2005-03-08

godamnit if i was to clarify the divide of what albums or bands should've made it into the book, or wheter punk, grunge, zeppelin, tull or hendrix belong in a book about heavy metal(they do by the way). anyhoo the strange uneven results are what make this book imteresting. the eighties are dominant as are maiden metallica and the sabs, but the process was determined democratically(we can't prove it, but then again it's just a stupid book) and it is what it is. Popoff muses on how the votes reflect what the definition of heavy metal is to the average head banger and to me that alone makes up for the shoddiness of the results(what did you expect-for the rankings to accurate hah!).
good book, lots of quotes from the likes of lemmy, ozzy, lars, bruce dickinson, john paul jones, dave grohl, halford etc. ignorant metalheads unfairly make metal(whatever the hell you think it is) look stupid. buy the book.

4 out of 5 stars Solid compendium from one of Rock's best journalists.......2005-01-03

Popoff is essentially a heavy metal Lester Bangs with a slightly boozier breath and attitude, but his scholarly approach to this genre is certainly well-respected amongst the metal cogniscenti and always welcome amongst what seems like mostly nothing more than high-gloss 'zine features on worthless nu-metal wankers and a flood of fly-by-night websites run by cranky Norweigans. As other folks have indicated, because this is a result of extensive external polling, there are a lot of strange inclusions into the top 500 (Pearl Jam? Bad Brains?) but - for better or worse - that's not really the point, its Martin Popoff using his extensive interviews and insight into the scene to help inform the shape of metal today as revealed by extensive polling from a collective of editors, musicians and general heavy hitters, folks whose tastes are eclectic and are definitely informed by even the most tangential developments of all things hard and heavy. This is why, for example, you see healthy amounts of grunge get voted on this list (which may have crushed metal in the early 90's almost as much as it informed and reshaped it) yet, not unsurprisingly, the two most metal of the grungers - Alice in Chains and Soundgarden - make the highest chart positions. And a quick survey through the very helpful, if terse appendicies shows AC/DC, Maiden, Priest, Zeppelin, Metallica and Sabbath all making plenty of appearances and keeping the charts mostly honest. Popoff's greatest and most charming conceit is his demonstrative love for somewhat misbegotten albums, and I think lots of folks will nod their heads in agreement whether or not he's excoriating their sacred cows such as Queensryche's _Warning_ or explaining why he really prefers Death Angel's _Ultra-Violence_ from their other plates. How do you know this man loves this music more than most mortals? Most of the album thumbnails are from Popoff's collection, and are autographed. The capsules from the musicians are very informative and conversational, which means that you get personal insight into many of the difficulties of making these albums and quite more often than not you get fun nuggets like Don Dokken being physically barred from the studio during the sessions of _Back For The Attack_ because of George Lynch's ego-posturing about songwriting credits, or Yngwie's 100% serious statement that his music is created not for "success...not at the expense of the art" yet somehow failing to address every album made past _Trilogy_. This is going to be huge fun for metal fans and "High Fidelity"-style music nerds. Next time though, I want the book centered around Popoff's personal top 500, where the full range of his love for the scene and personal eccentricities shine through. I think that will be a far more informative and valuable letter for the scene than this thoroughly enjoyable but somewhat disposable collection of abbreviated metallic vignettes.

    5 out of 5 stars 4 & 1/2 Stars Hard Sci-Fi .......2007-01-31

This is a very good story for old school Sci-Fi fans... It assumes you understand a bit of science, physics, and physiology. If you don't get that part, it will seem too dull of a story, as it is essential to understanding the politics, and motivation for the characters.

That being said, this is an excellent look at corporate greed, and politics as they might be in a distant future. The more things change the more they stay the same...

Personally I really liked the troubled refugee (Paul Decker) that deals with his talents, and weaknesses while trying to recover his senses and sanity after he is rescued from his broken craft.

The real protagonist is Ben Pollard, a futuristic "sea dog" of a spacer, who wants to be rich enough to see an ocean someday. This gritty story is continued in "Hell Burner" where Ben is called in to help the "Moonbeam" again when the Alliance needs his talents despite his fragile nature.

This is an utterly believable kind of Science Fiction tale, giving not only the big picture of the future, but some of the day to day details of life. A very good tale, that is also available in the omnibus edition "Devil to the Belt".

2 out of 5 stars Heavy Time is a must-miss.......2006-11-29

I just finished reading it. I don't understand why anyone would recommend it. 3/4 of it is repetative fluff. This could have been an average short story with proper editing. Absolutely nothing happens in the middle of the book. Read the first 20, and the last 20, and you have read it all.

I'll stick with Asimov, Heinlein, Drake, Weber, etc for sci-fi...

4 out of 5 stars Pretty decent space politics.......2004-01-28

Could easily be an X-Files government conspiracy episode in space. Surprisingly entertaining for a story without many subplots. The universe it takes place in seems pretty interesting, and I'm looking forward to reading the other books by Cherryh set in this universe.

3 out of 5 stars Collision Course: Rocks, Space-ships, and Corporations.......2002-08-14

When is paranoia justified? How do you know if you're mentally stable? What should the limits of corporate power be? These are some of the questions that Cherryh asks in this book, and gives at least some intimation of what the answers should be.

This book represents the earliest shown time-point in the Merchanter/Alliance/Union universe, before the war has really broken out, and stays entirely within the solar asteroid belt and at sub-light speeds for its action. Here we have the ASTEX company controlling the great majority of the mining of the asteroids, with only a company limited role for independent prospectors. The main story revolves around Dekker, rescued from his damaged ship by two other independents, Pollard and Bird, and the slowly brought to light details of just how Dekker's accident occurred in the first place.

Dekker, with all his mental problems from his accident, and Bird, as the older, experienced independent prospector, are very well realized characters. Pollard is not as fully realized, but he is far more fully developed in the sequel to this book, Hellburner. The society of miners, the space station environment, and the economic structure are a little hard to get your mind around at first, as Cherryh presents bits and pieces of these items almost as side items to her action and dialogue. But by the end of the book, you begin to realize just how well she has created and defined this near self-contained world, so different from most Earth societies, but with recognizable points of similarity, of definite humanity.

The problems of this book come from this same style of presenting facts to the reader in regards to celestial navigation. Unless you are well versed in this subject, and can extrapolate from a single sentence of description to an entire scenario of vectors, g-forces, and delta-v requirements you will probably find that there are several action sequences that either don't make much sense or don't carry the high feeling of danger that they were intended to. This is minimization of expository material taken to the extreme.

Cherryh's prose style for her Merchanter books has always been very abbreviated, clipped, full of unexplained acronyms, with a large number of incomplete sentences. This style is good for providing a sense of tension and fast action, and does well in this book as she slowly reveals the details of just how the Company is trying squeeze out all the 'little' people and take total control of the Belt, but it does take some getting used to.

The action of this story drives Cherryh's thematic points, on the need for human independence and companionship, the depths of unbridled greed, the tenuous line between real and unreal within the mind, and the necessity for all people to keep on doing what is possible, regardless of odds.

A very good action story, but really needed a little more background and explanatory material to make a solid, cohesive whole. Required reading before starting Hellburner, however, where the problems of this book fade away and the full power of her envisioned world can be seen.

4 out of 5 stars Consummate skill from C.J. Cherryh.......2001-08-09

I am a devoted fan of C. J. Cherryh thanks to her fantasy novels Chernevog and Russalka. Her talent for science fiction, it appears, equals her talent for fantasy: she is alarmingly versatile in her style and subject matter. Heavy time is what the crew of a spacecraft needs, after concluding a mission, to restabilise metabolism, bodily functions and psychological processes. But when your heavy time is spent on a space station inhabited chiefly by those who have never seen a mountain or a snake, run by a company that would rather kill than lose profit or power, where your every movement and transaction is logged and controlled by said company, perhaps you are better off taking your chances in deep space. The two-man crew of a mining vessel picks up a distress signal, and they rescue a distraught young pilot whose mind is half gone, but who remembers enough to cause serious problems for the company. Perhaps they can get the break they've always longed for by claiming salvage rights on his ship. But maybe the repercussions - moral and political - will be too vast. One thing's for sure: the consequences of this trip will not be straightforward for anybody. Cherryh pours her almost full-stop-less prose straight into the consciousness; her characters are grit-tough, but you love them for it; the technical detail makes you ache to get your head round it and the plot is speedy, supercharged, breathtaking. This novel is considered a science fiction classic, and deservedly so. It's stunningly visual: I'd love to see it on film. I didn't want to put this book down; I'll certainly be on the lookout for the rest of the series. Cherryh's skill is consummate.

3 out of 5 stars All over the place.......2006-02-21

This book is just what I called it, all over the place. The stories are interesting, but the scattered ideas and errors in the text make me think twice about the accuracy of facts. It was difficult to follow because the writer jumps around timelines a lot. I don't recommend it if you are really just getting into learning about the band, but if you are already a fan and pretty knowledgeable, you might get a little something out of it. Be warned, however, that the lack of chronology and scattered narrative make it a somewhat difficult read.

4 out of 5 stars VERY mediocre in some areas,WAY too many typos,BUT...........2006-01-28

Still worth owning if you are a Guns N' Roses fan.

Here,British journalist Paul Stenning traces the entire career and story of Guns N' Roses--one of the world's most succesful and most influential rock bands. The childhoods of Axl Rose,Slash,Izzy Stradlin,Duff McKagan, and Steven Adler and the musical influences Rose,Slash,Stradlin,McKagan, and Adler have had are both documented here, and there is some really good insight and info into the life of Axl Rose and all of what led to Rose doing some of the decadent and outrageous things that he has done in his life (there is also some "Axl Rose Psychology" in this novel, which reads in both a fascinating and shocking way). Here, you will also get to learn all about the formation of Guns N' Roses, the stuff that went on in GN'R's career and the lives of GN'R band members inside and outside of Guns N' Roses, behind the scenes stories to Guns N' Roses songs, more into what made GN'R so controversial, and there are several other interesting things in this book. While this book is mostly focused around Axl Rose (as well as Slash),some of the stories in this book that have to do with either Steven Adler,Izzy Stradlin,and/or Duff McKagan are completely fascinating (most of this book has recycled information in it,and there is not too much new info to be found here, but there is a lot of really good info in this book),and Paul Stenning also documents the whole story behind "Chinese Democracy" in this novel. I always wanted to learn more about the new line-up of Guns N' Roses, the making of "Chinese Democracy",and more on the songs that have been written for the CD(as well as the CDS' planned sequels)and if you want to know those three things(as well as everything else I mentioned in this paragraph)like I did before purchasing this book, this book has what you are looking for.

However, even though this book is very good in several areas,it is very low in some areas also. The large amount of typos in here(I didn't count them all up,but I was able to tell from reading the whole book that EVERY chapter in this book has more than five typos in it)is annoying and just plain ridiculous(there is even one part of this book where Paul Stenning uses a * but then does not say anything about what it is there for),this book does not tell enough about the post Guns N' Roses careers that Slash,Duff McKagan,Izzy Stradlin, and Steven Adler all had and the making of "Appetite For Destruction",and there is a little bit of a setback to this book. That setback is the fact that Paul Stenning is an OK,but mediocre author,so while this book does have several interesting facts in it,the several interesting facts to be found here are told a little bit poorly. Granted, the list of critiscms for this book that are mentioned above does seem long, but the good things about/in this book are all really good and are good enough for me to give this book a four star rating instead of a three star rating(believe me,I did like this book, but I can see where both the good and reviews of it are coming from).

There are actually two editions of this book available--an original version(the version I am reviewing right here)and a revised version(which you can find right here off of Amazon;it has a white cover).I would definitely say to go for the revised version--unfortunately,it fixes very little(if any)of the typos in this version of it,but it does add a new and good interesting chapter on Velvet Revolver, the new rock band that Duff McKagan,Slash, and Matt Sorum are in with former Stone Temple Pilots lead vocalist Scott Weiland and guitarist Dave Kushner, who has played in several different bands.

Despite it's faults, this is a very good book. If you know very little(or nothing)about Guns N' Roses, this book is worth both reading and owning(if you know a lot of information about GN'R and have read other GN'R books, whether or not you want to own this book is really up to you),but if you already know a lot about Guns N' Roses and knew a lot about GN'R before purchasing this book(which was my situation, although I did find a lot of facts in here about Guns N' Roses that I had not known about before I purchased this book),I still do suggest to not hesitate about buying, reading, and owning this novel, even though it does have some faults.

2 out of 5 stars Chinese Democracy, the album we will never see (big surprise).......2005-09-20

I used to love Guns N' Roses. I doubt they themselves thought that they would turn into such a worldwide phenomena. They were part of a unique niche of metal bands with similar stories where the members all migrated to the West Coast to make it big. They indulged in sex, drugs and rock n' roll, made no bones about the fact that they weren't choir boys. Riots, fast cars and flashy women, and living on the edge were what it was all about. Appetite for Destruction was perhaps one of the greatest metal albums in history with stadium rock anthems. They were one of the monsters of rock.

And then ... it all fell apart. The music climate had changed as Seattle overtook the landscape. Troubles with the law, tensions within, stints in rehab, and a huge mess of bad choices led to their inevitable split. Axl was greedy, others were stupid, and they were all pretty immature to begin with. In this book you won't find out anything you didn't already know (or can gather if you're completly new to the material). Axl owns the Guns N' Roses name, and he pushed eveyone out of the way to get it. The others moved on to other projects, the latest being Velvet Revolver - which is not bad.

DO NOT ACCEPT THINGS IN THIS BOOK AS THE TRUTH. I say that for several reasons. The typos are just ridiculous. I'm not the best speller in the world but they could've at least run a spell check here and there, leading us to believe that they aren't that swift to begin with. They omit a few key players such as Steven Adler. He would have things to say about them no doubt. The man had a stroke he was doing so much cocaine, and what happened? Like a lot of people who hit rock bottem, the people they thought were their friends abandon them. Shows what kind of friends (let alone people) they are.

Do we miss them? Not really. We moved on and absence didn't make the heart grow fonder. We'll never see the promised Chinese Democracy, and after Axl was Botoxed until his face was pulled taught for the few public appearences he made he learned his lesson and won't be coming out of his cave for a while. This is a dramatic story, and looking back I realize they are all far better off that they aren't together anymore. They chose to self destruct without being in a band.

    2 out of 5 stars It's okay ..........2005-08-16

If you know nothing about the band then bye it, otherwise most of the content of the book is just recycled information. At times I felt like I was reading the "Here Today, Gone To Hell" website. I could have finished a majority of the stories myself ... kind of like taking a peek at my girlfriend's diary. Any value to be had from the book is really just the consolidation of all the various Guns N' Roses information that's out there. Nothing ground breaking here, just a collection of what's all out on the Internet. I read it once and gave it away.

1 out of 5 stars THE BOOK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD FORGET!!!.......2005-08-08

This book is absolute trash! It contains no new information, everything is just recycled from somthing else, from the likes of rolling stone or MTV. It has no new quotes, true but trashy gossip or anything else AT ALL!!!

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!!!

The author is somewhat biast aswell, to everything Axl has ever said or done in the past and present.

This book will also bore you to tears!

Several space misions during the last decade on the energetic particles in space have contributed to the enormous progress in the observational data and their interpretations on the galactic cosmic rays. These include Anuradha mission aboard Spacelab-3 that gave for the first time results on the charged states of galactic cosmic ray heavy ions, the LDEF experiment on the ultraheavy cosmic ray nuclei which had a spectacular recovery leading to enormous quantity of high quality data collected in the large detector in a 5-year exposure in space, the ISEE-3 mission on the isotopic composition which gave high quality isotopic data on iron nuclei, the Heavy Ions in Space (HIIS) mission and the High Energy Isotope Spectrometer Telescope as well as ONR-604 experiment on isotopic composition which yielded several new results. The penetration studies into the magnetosphere by cosmic ray heavy ions measured by S 81-1 and CRRES experiment gave new insight
