5 out of 5 stars A "must have" addition for any lottery system.......2003-07-12

I purchased "Lottery Master Guide" and " Lotto How to Wheel a Fortune". They are both fantastic books. I was " blown away" with the vast amount of tracking techniques that Gail Howard managed to uncover. I've been working for years programming my own system: I could have save a lot of time and effort if I had first found Gail's books and computer programs. a plethora of "wheels" to choose from -- great for any betting budget.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading.......2006-01-30

I've just finished Wheel of Fortune by Susan Howatch. (1171 pages in 5 days it was so good!) What a fascinating book. The book starts with one person's point of view and then the story picks up at the end of that section with someone else's point of view. When they reflect back on something you already know about it gives you another perspective. I don't think I've ever read a book written like this one. What is so interesting about it is that it shows that what is seen by others is not the reality in the mind of the person being looked at. What we perceive to be an ideal situation is really not so ideal at all if we knew the truth of the matter. Behavior that seems dreadful from the outside makes perfect sense when we can look inside and see why someone behaved the way they did. If we knew what others really think of us we would probably be shocked at how far off the mark they are from what we think of ourselves. It's remarkable how things from past generations that we may not even know about effect us in ways that we are not even aware of.

Another interesting thing is the idea of time. That time is not a straight line leading forward and behind us. But instead it is a circle and we can hear echos of the past and the future across the circle of time. I like books that make me sit back and say, "Hmmm" after I have read them and this one had that effect on me. The whole time I was reading the book I thought it a work of fiction. I was somewhat surprised to get to the end and read the author's note that it is a re-creation in a modern dimension of a true story involving King Richard II, King Henry IV, and King Henry V. Amazing. Wish I had read the author's note first. Oh well, I think my mind will be chewing on some of the concepts of this book for at least a few days. How well do we really ever know someone else that we think we know? Fascinating question.

4 out of 5 stars A modern day Trollope?.......2005-08-29

Susan Howatch is probably the closest approximation we have to a modern day Anthony Trollope in her character driven style of writing, and plot development. Howatch, like Trollope, is fascinated by the moral choices people make, and the reasons for making them (eg. religious belief, guilt, envy, etc.). However, where Trollope tends to use more wry sarcasm, Howatch relies on (often deceptively) romantic scenes, and generational bonds.

"Wheel of Fortune," 1171 pages long, revolves around the idea that people are tied to the mis-deeds committed by past generations, and, unless great effort is applied to break the destructive cycle, are usually condemned to repeat history. Most of the story takes place at an historic mansion known as Oxmoon in early twentieth century Wales on the Gower Peninsula. The main characters are frequently obsessed with "doing the done thing," "drawing the line," and generally keeping up appearances, often with tragic results.

The book is divided up into six parts, each of which is told from the perspective of a different character, and which, in total, spans over 60 years. Robert Godwin, the narrator of Part One, is the oldest son and heir to Oxmoon. Outwardly, he's a hard man, completely rational and highly intelligent. His obsession is his slightly older cousin Genevra, and the greatest moment of his life was waltzing with her, as a teenager, under the Oxmoon crystal chandeliers to the "Blue Danube," though Ginervra loves another. Howatch repeats this romantic scene over and over again, usually as a metaphor that things aren't as grand as they appear to be (anyone who reads "Wheel of Fortune" as a romantic novel needs to read it again). Through Ginevra's section (Part Two), we learn how vulnerable Robert really is, in more ways than one.

Parts One and Two of "Wheel of Fortune" are mere preludes to the heart of the book. In Part Three, Robert's younger brother John, who becomes the head of the family, narrates. John excels at drawing everyone's "line" except his own. The love of his life, Bronwen, is several stations below John, but John finds he can love no one else. John acts as sort of the family referee, especially between the greatest rivals of the story, Harry and Kester.

Parts Four and Five (repectively Robert's son, Kester [who in adulthood, bears some unsettling resemblance to Michael Jackson], and John's son, Harry) turn the book into a page turner, and make "Wheel of Fortune," into a terrific read. The relationship between Kester and Harry (and their rivalry with respect to Oxmoon) is always intriguing, and takes some unexpected twists and turns, to say the least. Their destinies intertwine, usually in a destructive manner, and both ultimately pay for their hatred of the other.

Howatch could have ended the book with a final struggle between Kester and Harry, but chose to look into the future with Hal, Harry's son, (but emotionally closer to his uncle, Kester) in a spell-binding part Six, where Hal attempts to unravel the last great family mystery. There is always hope and redemption, the author seems to say, and we are not necessarily condemned to repeat the past.

All-in-all, I found "Wheel of Fortune" to be engrossing and memorable. I didn't give it 5 stars, because I think Howatch can be heavy-handed and repetitious with romantic metaphor and pithy speeches. How many times do we need to hear about that waltz under the chandeliers to the "Blue Danube?" Do the characters necessarily have to say that they are "drawing the line" or "doing the done thing" on every other page?

Another quibble has to do with the character Bronwen (John's true love). Although many of the Welsh names and towns sound like they come from "Lord of the Rings" (perhaps the British Tolkien was influenced by this), does Bronwen really have to talk like the immortal queen of the Elves, or Yoda from Star Wars? Every time Bronwen would open her mouth and spout some celtic mysticism, I would almost groan out loud.

I also cannot accept how young children get over the death of a parent so quickly, and visa versa. I think I understand the stiff-upper-lip attitude of this culture, but the death of a mother to a young child surely would affect him more than, for example, a rivalry with a cousin over a piece of property.

Even so, I highly enjoyed "Wheel of Fortune," and recommend it, even given its length. If you like Susan Howatch, may I also recommend Gail Godwin, and Stuart O'Nan's "Wish You Were Here." And, of course, the master himself, Anthony Trollope.

5 out of 5 stars Wheel of Fortune-- The Plantagenets.......2005-04-30

I have just finished reading "Wheel of Fortune" and frankly I am exhausted. I literally couldn't put it down and by the time I was finished I felt emotionally drained. The best book I've read in many a moon.

Anyway, I read Wheel of Fortune in hardcover, two volumes. On the last inside page, S. H. says in Author's notes "The Wheel of Fortune is a re-creation in a modern dimension in which the following people play leading parts:

Edward of Woodstock, 1330-1376, The Black Prince
His wife and cousin, Joan of Kent
John of Gaunt, his brother
His younger son, later King Richard 11
John of Gaunt's legitimate son Henry of Bolingbroke, later King Henry 1V who restored England to her former military glory and completed the full circle of the Plantagenet family's wheel of fortune.

I didn't know all this when I was reading--- I just read it as a family saga that kept me engrossed from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars This book is worth 10 Stars.....ABSOLUTE BEST BOOK.......2004-08-06

This is the BEST book I have ever read. I know that many people place Gone With The Wind at the top of the list (and rightly so) but I consider this book the "English Version" of Gone with the Wind.

Instead of Scarlett and the Tara Plantation, you get to meet the Goodwins and their magical home Oxmoon. This book is divided into six chapters with each chapter being told by a different character. By doing this, the author gives the readers a chance to see other characters from different points of view. She also ends each chapter with a bang and the next character picks it up where the last character left off.

If you are looking for a book filled with love, hate, envy, greed, murder and so forth, you don't need to look any further. The book is over a 1000 pages long but it moves right along. I found myself wishing that it had been 2000 pages long. I did not want the book to end. Lucky for me, this author has other great novels.

PLEASE GET THIS BOOK AND READ THE FIRST CHAPTER, YOU WILL BE HOOKED!!!!!

I would go on but I don't want to bore any readers and anyways I am starting on another Susan Howatch book.

If anyone has read this book and knows of another great author such as Susan Howatch (I doubt it), please email me at mitzibilly@yahoo.com.

5 out of 5 stars let the music begin! The Blue Danube!.......2002-03-18

If I had to name a favourite author, it would have to be Susan Howatch; her novels never fail to delight me and nourish my need for stories that do more than entertain. And if I had to choose a favourite Susan Howatch novel, it would have to be the Wheel of Fortune. This sumptuous novel drew me in from the very first page and soon I was lost in richness, following the drama of the Godwin family and living their lives with them in their fabulous Welsh estate, Oxmoon.
As in all of the Howatch family sagas which precede it, The Wheel of Fortune is written through a multiple third-person perspective, a structure which Howatch has mastered to perfection. Thus she leads us through the story by allowing us to identify first with one character and then with another, each time forcing us to rectify the opinions we have already formed on each indivual in turn. It's as if we move around each character, seeing him or her from a multitude of aspects, from the inside and the outside, and thus gain insight into the whole personality.

While reading Howatch I often felt that this is perhaps her way of showing her readers the necessity for compassion and understanding in our lives, for she whips away our prejudices and preconceptions about her characters simply by switching perspectives. For me this happened in the Wheel of Fortune with the character of Kester, who first appears as a thoroughly unlikeable, spoiled child, a misfit who never failed to exasperate those around him - and of course the reader. The moment Kester himself was allowed to speak, however, and I saw the situation through his viewpoint, he became my favourite character and I could identify with him completely, and appreciate him as the creative genius he is.

Then there is Robert Godwin, the personification of male chauvinism, an uptight London barrister who takes leave of all his senses when he falls for his cousin Ginevra. Ginevra herself is at first rather silly and self-absorbed, but as she grows in depth and self-esteem she develops into a warm, strong, well-rounded personality and a driving force in the novel. John Godwin is the epitome of good upbringing: his motto is "Here I have my standards, and here I draw the line!"; but then he meets Bronwen, a lower class Welshwoman who embodies the passion and mysticism that is simmering just beneath the surface of John's own consciousness, and John throws caution to the wind. Finally there is Harry, Kester's nemesis and greatest rival, the perfect public school boy . It's the rivalry between Kester and Harry, both of whom seem to mirror each other, each one having what the other most desires, rising and sinking on opposite sides of the Wheel of Fortune, which provides the foundation for this wonderful story.

Last but not least there is Oxmoon itself, their home; fabulous, haunting, living, Oxmoon: the orchestra playing the Blue Danube in its grand hall while the dancers dance beneath the glittering chandeliers. The magical atmosphere which pervades this wonderful story and draws us into the wonderful world teeming with rounded, living, breathing, characters we feel we have known all our lives.

Book Description

An intriguing history of the futures market and speculation
From Jay Gould's attempt to corner the gold market in the 1860s to the Hunt brothers' scandalous efforts to control the silver market in the 1980s, Wheels of Fortune traces the rich, colorful history of the futures market on its quest for respectability and profit. This comprehensive account shows readers why the markets have been grabbing headlines for over 100 years as both respectable economic institutions and hotbeds of gambling activity and scandal. Charles Geisst brings the personalities and strategies behind the futures market and speculation in general to life, against a backdrop of American life that begins prior to the Civil War.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Whale of a Good Story.......2003-02-11

Several members of my family are futures traders and this book captures the business perfectly. Also a good history, beginning before the Civil War and working its way toward the downfall of Long Term Capital Management. The author does a good job of mixing history, the markets and some great anecdotes together so you never get bored reading it. Valuable piece of history and worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Entertaining.......2002-10-31

This book is a history of the futures and derivatives markets from the 1850s to the present. It painstakingly traces the history of the markets as they developed in Chicago and later in New York. What I liked was that the author mixed a good amount of the institutional history with stories about trading scandals to keep the reader interested and entertained. The markets showed that they were always two-faced -- dealing with the public and also for themselves. They got more mature after futures and options were introduced in the 1970's but were still seeing scandal until the late 1990s when the narrative ends. The book also discusses the battle between the markets and the government along the way and it is an interesting part of the story. Makes you wonder whether Enron would have happened if there had been stronger regulators in place. A highly recommended book since it is the first history that I know of that covers this material. Seems a vital part of American history that has been overlooked until now.

MIND-LINKED --
They had been brought together by mutual need when both their peoples were faced with the threat of the warlike Valtegans, an enemy bent on conquering any other race it encountered.
She was Carrie, the daughter of the human governor of the Terran colony planet Keiss. He was Kusac, the son and heir of the Sholan Clan Lord. Both were telepaths of the highest order, and the bond they formed was compounded equally of love and mind power. But even as they sought to refine their suddenly enhanced and intermingled powers and to define their relationship, the two were thrust into the heart of an interstellar conflict.
For while Terran and Sholan representatives worked together in good faith to negotiate a mutual defense treaty, opposing factions on both their worlds sought to use Carrie and Kusac for their own ends... of failing that to destroy them -- and with them all hope for a Terran-Sholan alliance!
Each of the books in the Sholan Alliance series contains a special introduction written by Lisanne Norman just for this edition. In these introductions, the author gives some insight into how each story developed and the motivations of the characters. These introductions make the electronic editions something very special and are only available from peanutpress. Thank you, Lisanne.

2 out of 5 stars A novel that just spins in place........2007-03-24

After reading Lisanne Norman's first novel, Turning Point, I was very intrigued by her view of a spacefaring, feline race called the Shola. Certainly they were unusual, and if a touch too close to CJ Cherryh's Chanur novels, well, I was in the mood for some gritty science fiction that had some unusual twists to it, and if there's a little romance between the human girl and the Sholan boy, well, why not?

The story starts right off where Turning Point left off. The Sholan relief ships have arrived and driven off the alien Valtegan invaders, and a tenuous alliance between the humans on Keiss and the Sholans has started. Carrie Hamilton, the daughter of the governer on Keiss and her Sholan companion, Kusac, now look forward to a new life together, one that includes romance and Carrie's ever growing telepathic abilities. Along with them will go the other Sholan crew from Kusac's ship, each with their own part to play in the unfolding drama.

Vanna, another Sholan, has become Carrie's friend, and her interest in Garras is growing along with her medical skills, has several pivotal points in the novel. There are also a host of new characters to be introduced as well, from Kusac's parents; Kaid, a mysterious stranger who seems to be everywhere at once, and a host of secondary characters, who appear briefly, and then vanish just as quickly.

The first half of the novel takes place aboard the Khalossa, the warship that had originally sent out Kusac's mission, and the second occurs on Shola, where Carrie and Kusac begin training together to strengthen their leska bond, that links them psychically together.

Unlike the previous novel, which was a well-crafted, and thought out adventure story of being marooned on an alien world, this time, the plot meanders and skids about. It's hard to tell if this is a story about political intrigue, assimmilation into an alien society by a human, a romance, or a murder mystery. While Norman is adept at coming up with new ideas, she relies on tired old cliches to tell them -- Carrie, for example, is a perpetual damsel-in-distress, needing to be rescued every fifty pages or so from assassination attempts, weird medical problems, and so forth, while Kusac is constantly in a defiant mode, trying to keep Carrie happy, and dealing with his conservative parents. To keep the stereotypes rolling, he's not only a handsome sort for a Sholan, he's also some sort of minor princeling with highly placed parents.

Sigh.

Why, do authors keep doing this to science fiction readers? Yes, of course you're going to get more descriptive colour with people with power and influence, but this takes some work on the writer's part to keep things from being a tired old device to be found in any historical romance.

To make things worse there are endless pages of dialog that go on and on and on, without really adding to the plot. Characters react to attacks, nasty aliens, prejudice and so forth, or do amazingly stupid things that should get them killed, but of course, they are saved at the last possible minute.

In short, this is a novel that is screaming for a good edit job. Scenes and conversations drag on and on, the heroine is in constant need of rescuing, the male hero rarely steps up to the plate, and the end of the novel has one of the more sappy, silly endings around -- it's more suited to a pulp romance novel than a science fiction story.

Oh well. I seriously doubt that I will reread this novel but as I already have the rest of the series on my shelves, I'll give the next one a try, in the faint hope that it will improve and go back to the quality of the first story.

In any case, the editors at DAW were asleep at the wheel when they approved this 650 page clunker that goes nowhere, and rarely gets above the lukewarm stage.

5 out of 5 stars Fortune's Wheel .......2007-02-11

My attention was seized from the first pages. Read it through in one sitting. Found the other 5 books in this series equal in entertainment.
Really - really want to see the 7th book in this series which is "in preparation" according to Ms Norman.

2 out of 5 stars better but much, much worse.......2005-01-08

WARNING: PLOT EXPOSURE. While it is true that Norman's writing ability increased from the first, her characters are poorly developed - neither Kusak or Carrie, the two main characters, experience any growth throughout the book. The plot is also extremely contrived. I knew the moment it said she was pregnant that the fact she would lose the child was as much a certainty that she would survive for the next installment of Norman's series. Norman didn't disappoint - or did, by showing that she wasn't below using lame plot devices and contrived events to make sure Carrie isn't "burdened" by a child. Other events within the book carry (pun not intended) a similar quality.

4 out of 5 stars The Sholan Side.......2003-01-23

Fortune's Wheel is the second novel in the Sholan Alliance series, following Turning Point. In the previous volume, Kusac uses illusion to get Carrie and himself into the Valtegan base to use their transmitter to alert the Khalossa, the Sholan mothership. After Carrie and Kusac enter the base, his Sholan shipmates and the Keissan resistance attack the Valtegan base as a distraction. Once the message is sent, the attackers destroy as much of the base as possible, including the main antennas, to preclude the Valtegans from detecting the approach of the Khalossa.

In this novel, the Khalossa and other Sholan warships attack the Valtegan bases on Keiss and free the colony. The Sholans then initiate first contact negotiations with the humans on Keiss and on Terra itself.

Carrie and Kusac have become a Leska Link couple, the first such pairing between different species. A Leska Link forms a deep telepathic bond between telepaths, but the link between Carrie and Kusac is much deeper than normal, allowing them to be constantly aware of each other's thoughts and capable of forming a gestalt with amazing powers. Moreover, both Carrie and Kusac can fight and kill, normally an impossibility for Sholan telepaths.

The Leska Link must be consummated by sexual intercourse and the bond must be reinforced by sexual intimacy about every five days so that Contact Deprivation does not cause them to fall into a coma and die. Carry is unaware of the needs of a Leska Link couple, is intimidated by the strength of the lust aroused by the bond, and is shamed by the contempt of her fellow humans. She tries to avoid contact with Kusac and he just waits for nature to take its course. They both are close to death before their friends become aware of the problem and bring them together.

The news of the mixed species Leska bond causes a furor on the Khalossa. When Kusac attacks a human taunting Carrie, the Captain informs Alien Relations, who discover that Kusac is the son of their head, Konis Aldatan, and heir to Clan Aldatan.

This novel dwells on the conflicts that occur between Carrie and Kusac despite the strong attraction of their link and the ability to perceive each others deepest thoughts. Carrie has the most problems with their relationship, but Kusac is also prone to misunderstandings; after all, they are alien to each other.

Recommended for Norman fans and anyone who enjoys stories with strong characterization and interpersonal development.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, much better than the first.......2001-07-18

This follow up to "Turning Point" shows dramatic improvement in Norman's writing ability. But she still needs to improve on pacing and character development.

First of all, this is not hard core sci-fi, which is nice for a change. This is light sci-fi with a heavy emphasis on romance. A lot of people say this isn't for guys, but I'm a guy and I got into it. I actually apreciate a book that develops a good love story. Kusac and Carrie are really the only reason to read these books.

But here's my problem. Have you ever known a couple that you genuenly liked, but you got tired of them always arguing over stupid things and knew that all of their problems would be solved if they would just TALK about it? That's this story. Carrie and Kusac get into three major arguments and it gets tiresome. Carrie's character seems to have become a lot weaker than in the first book and she reeally isn't developed all that much.

There's also about ten thousand characters who have similar sounding names, as well as a dozen story lines, yet none of them are really interesting. Several times Vanna's subplot threatens to take over the book and you just get tired of all the extra characters. Not only that, but the pacing is pretty slow. Lot's of things are repeated, and there's tons of unnessecary scenes that could be trimmed down. There really isn't one main story line, this is more like a soap opera that just goes from one event to another with no end in site. The "climax" is based on an event that happens in the last 100 pages and has nothing to do with the beginning of the book. That's actually when the book really starts to come together. The first 500 pages are real tedious and slow.

Another reviewer for one of Norman's books hit it right on the head - we never get to see what the characters think. All we here is dialogue, and tons of it. The specific feelings, emotions, and thoughts of the characters are never really revieled, and this is frustrating. Just when you think you're getting somewhere, the scene shifts to another character and you start all over.

So why give it three stars? Like I said, the relationship between Kusac and Carrie is the reason to read this, and they are very interesting characters. Most of their scenes are very touching. The story lights up whenever they are together. The same goes for Kusac's family. Early on they aren't too likable, but by the end they're very noble and endeering.

Bottem line: the book was too long winded, and too many characters almost derail the rather small story. I'm not sure if I like where the series is going and will give at least the third book a try.

Book Description

There are some who say that the Lady Fortune

has a wheel, and all men are fixed upon it.

The wheel turns, and the men rise, or fall,

with the turning of the wheel.

Birle has agreed to be wed to the huntsman Muir as an escape from the drudgery of life at her father's inn -- but the moment she looks into the bellflower blue eyes of the man she comes upon stealing one of her father's boats, Birle knows she cannot marry Muir. Even after she discovers the mysterious stranger is Orien, a Lord and as unreachable to an innkeeper's daughter as a star, Birle is determined to travel with him as far as he will allow.

Their travels take Birle to a world far from home, a world where Lords may become slaves, where Princes rule by fear, and where Fortune's Wheel turns more swiftly and dangerously than Birle could have imagined.

Newberry Medalist Cynthia Voigt's second novel of the Kingdom, set two generations later than Jackaroo, is a memorable combination of thrilling adventure and heart-stopping romance.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely awful.......2006-08-04

Clearly, not many people share my opinion of this book, but I couldn't bring myself to even finish this one. It was probably the worst book I have ever tried to read. One can only take so much of Voigt's undeveloped and tiresome characters, unoriginal storyline and the book's painfully dull structure before giving up on reading it entirely. Birle, the main character, is a colorless and dull Mary-Sue, fated to marry some older man she doesn't love, when she is whisked away by Orien (or was it Oriel? Voigt's choices of names from book to book are way too similar if you ask me) a 19-year-old noble with, apparently, gold-tipped eyelashes and "bellflower eyes." Whatever that means. The flawless, handsome hero of the story, Orien is a noble who is just trying to get away from the pressures of noble life. Wow, you've never heard that one before. Soon Birle has fallen for him and they are escaping to the "Kingdom" together. Predictable, but how can you blame her? The man has gold-tipped eyelashes. That pretty much sums it up.
The book is filled with Birle's annoying, childish musings about oh-so-wonderful Orien, and it just gets tiresome. The ending, which I did read, is just plain weird, and sends a weird message to younger readers. Every time the character's lives are threatened (it happens quite a lot, really) you find yourself rooting for the bad guys. You'd think, for a woman who's written so many books, that the writing style might have a few redeeming qualities, but it's just another disapointment. She writes like a teenager, creating such awkward comparisons as "the conversations fluttered about them like flurries of snow," and so on. Definitely skip this one. It's nothing you haven't heard before, and frankly the few good things about it aren't worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars On Fortune's Wheel.......2006-05-09

Compelling. Engrossing. Enlightening. These are only a few words that describe Voight's excellent book, `On Fortune's Wheel'. Birle, the main character, is instantly one you can relate to, which makes the development of her character throughout the book even more intimate for the reader. If you are interested in books following the lives of people during the Middle Ages, this book is set in a fictional land of a similar time period, describing the conditions aptly. A tale of love spun into an adventure like no other, "On Fortune's Wheel" is a must read for lovers of all genres.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2006-04-06

I first read this book when I was in junior high. I loved it then and checked it out of the library over and over again. I found it in a used book store when I was about 21 and have read it many more times since. This is a book that I can read, re-read, and re-re-read and never get tired of it. It is a great romantic story full of adventure and excitement. It is a well-written page turner that I am never able to put down until I finish it. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Wheel is Spinning.......2006-01-23

On Fortunes Wheel is a stirring tale about a humble, innkeeper's daughter who finds herself longing for adventure. Birle finds herself among many different people, including slaveholders and philosophers. After living in a quiet village in a good but strict kingdom. Birle is in for a shock when she leaves her closed world. The girl stumbles upon an Earl who is running away. Their personalities were not alike, though you cherished and agreed with each of them. Lord Orien (the Earl) is courageous but scared, something that any person would admire. Birle decides to join him on his journey, and they begin their adventures together. This book tells about their struggle and misfortunes, as well as the cheerful times that they shared. I have often imagined what life would have been like in the medieval centuries and this book was a superb example. You could imagine the hardships and trials people must have gone through, such as slave traders or kings who would use their power for ill. I thought this was an incredible book with two rousing characters and an excellent setting. Cynthia Voigt really gets you interested in what is going to happen next in the story. As you read you understand what the characters are going through, and you share their same emotions. For example, when two of the character's get separated you feel their pain and suffering. It is a "silent" love story filled with adventure, and an amazing story line. Birle's journey with her Earl, "Lord Orien," is a remarkable, story of which everyone should read.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever!!!!.......2005-09-17

I bought this book last year out of curiosity, and it turned out to be one of the best stories I've ever read!!! The characters, the setting, the plot all amazing, 100% flaw-free! I just read it again last week and fell in love all over again. It can be read without having read Jackaroo first, which by the way I just ordered. This is without any doubt my favorite fantasy book. 50 stars!

5 out of 5 stars answered my question while other cards could not.......2007-05-10

Every one has their own opinion which can make or ruin the outcome of a reading. Go into it thinking it is silly it will turn silly. If you open yourself to the deck, the meanings will come forth for you. Being of open mind makes the deck work, not just the cards themselves tho your reaction to them can aid in the discovery.... I was needing an answer that I could not get from my other decks.(not even Jamie sams) WHY? It was the pictures in this one that I found warm, inviting and calmer because the colors on the cards were comfortable. I sat down with these and opened my energy to them, gave of myself and the cards gave back. I AM A PROUD OWNER, (or maybe owned by,) OF THESE CARDS. What I have been taught by these cards I will cherish for as long as the cards choose to stay with me. I almost put them up for sale till I had a warm feeling come over me and I decided to at least try them. I am now making a beaded pouch to keep them in. DO not listen to others until you yourself have opened up to the energy of these cards which will mix with your own.

2 out of 5 stars Beginning Shamanism (Not Native American or Animal).......2005-06-07

"White Eagle Medicine Wheel: A Native American Way of Life" by Wa-Na-Nee-Chee is an excellent introduction to the tools that shamans use. This book is divided into learning from three groups - animals, grandmothers and grandfathers, and totems. In addition, Wa-Na-Nee-Chee inserts himself into the book to guide the reader into the inner mysteries of shamanism. By doing the card spreads and readings, the reader has a safe way to begin the practice of shamanism. The reader can discover their own meanings of each concept that "White Eagle Medicine Wheel" presents.

Although, Wa-Na-Nee-Chee presents his book and card set as "Native American" wisdom, people would do better by learning the cultures of specific tribes. Medicine Wheels are usually found in Plains Cultures, and Totem Poles in only Northwest American Cultures. You would not find the two together in the same culture, as the author seems to imply.

Although, the writings of the animals are similar to "Medicine Cards" by David Carson and Jaime Sams, the beautiful cards do offer an intuitive way to know the animals. In addition, the animal teachings can be read alone or with teachings such as `record keeping' and `birthing'. To learn how to integrate animals into a shamanistic practice, the reader is well served by this book. However, if the reader is interested in learning more about animals or Native American cultures, they should seek out other books instead of this one.

I'm glad that I bought it, because I have loved the way, Piaf sang for a very long time...but, since she pressumably wrote this book herself, she tells things her way, & NOT all that much!
SO, I would be interested in a Biogrphy written by somebody else, who really did the research, & told me everything there is to know about Piaf!
I feel like I have found out, very little!

    Book Description

Wheels of Fortune is a tale of two cities-both of them Akron. One city, built on rubber, turned itself into a model for Middle America industrial success. The other city has had to learn to live on in rubber's wake, to remake itself, to come to terms with its remade self. To tell this tale of two cities is to tell the tale of America's rubber industry. The stories interlock like tire and wheel. From its earliest days, Akron has been a city of multiple incarnations: canal boat stopover, farm machinery manufacturer, cereal maker. But for more than a century after Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goodrich came to town in 1870, Akron was the Rubber Capital of the World. Its people worked in the rubber shops of Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone, General, Seiberling, Mohawk, and Sun. They lived in Goodyear Heights and Firestone Park, the neighborhoods fostered by their employers. Even the air they breathed was heavy with the odor of rubber. To some, it stank. To others, it smelled like money. By the 1980s, much the rubber industry and, thus, Akron had disappeared. Not into the night. Not overnight. Everyone had seen it coming for years. Union and rubber companies management squared off against each other as if the city were a boxing ring. There were no winners. Akron was the loser. First, the plants closed, the production moving south. Then the company headquarters, with the exception of Goodyear, followed. The people rubber left behind discovered they had not only their memories but also the ability to remake Akron into a center for polymer knowledge, a remnant of rubber research and a bridge between the two cities. Wheels of Fortune is their story, these people who made more than rubber. They made lives-and a city.
