practical and inspirational.......2007-09-05
i enjoyed reading this book which was both extremely useful and inspirational in its practical demonstration of how water care can change lives with a little thought, care and the tried and true methods of someone who is clearly an expert in the field.
An Excellent Overview.......2007-08-28
This book presents a good starting point for those interested in harvesting rainwater for landscaping and domestic use. It presents basic ideas of the process clearly with many simple (and sometimes entertaining) figures, pictures, and a number of real-life examples. Appendices in the book present more technical information for planning, etc.
I live in a state that is much wetter than Arizona, but applying some of the principles in this book has helped me work toward independence from the town water supply. This past year, the garden has been irrigated solely from rainwater collected off my roof into several rainbarrels. I'm currently expanding this system to over 600 gallons of storage... sufficient for my garden size.
The book refers to Volumes 2 and 3 of the series, neither of which have been published as of this review. These volumes are supposed to expand on the ideas presented in Vol. 1. However, it seems that the publication date for Vol. 2 keeps getting pushed back. This publication delay is my only disappointment.
Can't wait to try it out!.......2007-07-03
I bought this book about a month ago. We're in escrow on a house in Las Vegas with no landscaping whatsoever in an older neighborhood. This book has been very helpful in planning my landscaping. I can't wait to put his ideas to use!
top notch.......2007-01-19
If you're interested in religion, buy a bible. If you're interested in making your property water secure, buy this book. It's a ripper.
Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands (Vol. 1): Guiding Principles to Welcome Rain into Your Life And Landscape.......2007-01-04
I can't say enough about what a good reference this book is for all gardeners/farmers, and even for people who don't garden. Water is such a precious resource. Mr. Lancaster did extensive research for this book inspired by Mr. Phirri in Africa. I first heard of Mr. Phirri in an online article by Mr. Lancaster. He was arrested several times for stealing water from his neighbors during the dry season because he still was able to grow and harvest vegetables and such when no one else could....and more importantly perhaps, his well never ran dry. The thing was he wasn't stealing water. He was harvesting it in unique ways he had to prove. It caused folks from all over the globe to go see how a simple African man could manage this after he convinced a judge to come to see his system for saving water. He became known as "The Man Who Farms Water."
Mr. Lancaster took what he learned from Mr. Phirri and researched it back home in Arizona to see if these ideas/techniques could be used anywhere else. What he and his brother learned caused even the city of Tuscon, Arizona, to change their ideas and practices in order to save precious water for its citizens. This book explains all of that and more. The one drawback to the book may be that it lists sources only for Tuscon, but it was that area for which it was written. What it shows may be used anywhere, though. It goes much further than just putting out barrels to collect rainwater. You may find yourself wondering why you didn't think of that yourself. Some of it completely contradicts what we have always been told about how our property should be graded, for instance. It may be my most valuable gardening reference, but more importantly it may be the most valuable resource for preserving potable water for the world

Book Description
Sahelian West Africa has recovered from the disastrous droughts of the 1970s and 1980s. People have learned to adapt to risk and uncertainty in fragile dryland environments. They, as well as global change scientists, are worried about the impact of climate change on these West African drylands. What do the experiences of the last thirty years say about the preparedness for higher temperatures, lower rainfall, and even more variability? Detailed studies on Dryland West Africa as a whole, and on Burkina Faso, Mali and Northern Ghana in particular show an advanced coping behaviour and increased adaptation, but also major differences in vulnerability and coping potential. Climate change preparedness programmes have only just started and require more robust support, and more specific social targeting, for a population which is rapidly growing, even more rapidly urbanising, and further integrating in a globalised economy.
This book is the first of its kind with a comprehensive analysis of climate change experiences in West African drylands, with attention for pathways of change and the diversity of adaptation options available. This book is of interest to scientists studying global and climate change, especially dealing with issues of adaptation. Social scientists, economists, geographers and policy makers concerned with West Africa should also read this book.

A real problem-solver for any seeking to produce a beautiful garden under today's drier conditions.......2005-08-06
As the planetary weather patterns and overall environment warms, so garden plants which typically did well in prior decades are now suffering from hotter summers, requiring even the most experienced gardener to try new plants which have a greater range of tolerance to warmer conditions. Gardening writer Jennifer Bennett has already produced several award-winning titles, but Dryland Gardening: Plants That Survive And Thrive In Tough Conditions is broader-based than most, and provides alternative plant choices for all kinds of dry conditions. Organized by type of plant: bulbs, grasses, groundcovers and vines, and even herbs, Dryland Gardening is a real problem-solver for any seeking to produce a beautiful garden under today's drier conditions.
Book Description
Physician and author David Dryland, M.D., helps patients lead fibromyalgia-free lives through a revolutionary approach to the diagnosis, treatment and cure of fibromyalgia. The Fibromyalgia Cure clearly explains the science of fibromyalgia and includes a simple diagnostic test to determine if you have fibromyalgia.
The Fibromyalgia Cure blends traditional western medicine with classical mind-body medicine, giving patients multiple options for the treatment of this illness. Dr. Dryland details groundbreaking research that for the first time links fibromyalgia to chronic dopamine depletion in the central nervous system. He clearly explains how patients can understand what is causing their particular case of fibromyalgia, and how to reverse the progression of this illness naturally. He also describes his success with prescribing medications that are specifically designed to simulate the role of dopamine in the central nervous system, greatly reducing or eliminating fibromyalgia symptoms.
The Fibromyalgia Cure provides comprehensive answers to these straightforward, but previously difficult to answer fibromyalgia questions: What is it? What are the causes? What can it do to you? What can you do about it?
The book provides patients with a step-by-step process for understanding and then treating fibromyalgia. Also included in the book, is an Appendix for Healthcare Providers. This Appendix will help patients and healthcare providers work together to identify the best course of treatment for their particular case of fibromyalgia.

Bringing it all together.......2006-09-04
Dr. Dryland has written a book that brings together much of the current research about Fibromyalgia along with his own intimate understanding of the syndrome. He presents a revolutionary approach from a western physician in that he not only presents findngs on new medication, but also discusses how our thoughts can influence what happens in our bodies. I would have like to have seen a bit more of the science that he discusses, and some instruction on how to question the fight or flight response in addition to the tease of his next book.
I GAINED MY LIFE BACK!!!.......2006-04-04
My life was lost, due to fibromyalgia, until a good friend gave me Dr. Dryland's book. His diagnosis made sense. The best part is there is a "cause" and a "solution". My own doctor, after some research, let me start taking mirapex. And!! Whala!! After starting at a very low dose, and moving up to an optimal dose, I am pain free. It is a miracle. It has been 3 months and I still feel no pain. I have never met Dr. Dryland, but because of him I GAINED MY LIFE BACK!! YOU CAN TOO! READ HIS BOOK AND WORK WITH YOUR DOCTOR. You will thrive again. Cynthia Wagner, California
"How Dr. D gave me new LIFE".......2005-05-28
I have been a client of Dr. Dryland's for 2 years now! He was the who got me back on my feet, when no one could figure out what was wrong with me! I collapsed for about 3 weeks and could not move very well. The first time I saw him he NEW exactly what, and how to get me better! He referred to his book numerous times.... It was not out yet! I highly recommend EVERYTHING in this book and to get to a Dr. Who follows his beliefs.
This is the best book for fibro patient ever.... and thank you Dr. D for helping me and for writing this book.
Your Awesome!

The Fibromyalgia Cure.......2005-05-12
This is a book that could/will save thousands of fibro patients a lot of pain and foggy brains. My wife has severe fibromyalgia. It was so difficult to watch her suffer after I realised that she wasn't faking pain. At first I just thought she was lazy because she was in bed a lot saying she was in pain and had absolutely no energy. It got worse as the years passed and I got fed up. So I took her to a pain specialist over 200 miles from home. After two visits he diagnosed her as having fibromyalgia...this unknown affliction that was affecting more and more people, usually women. No one could explain it accurately. This book DOES explain it accurately and scientifically. We waited nine months to get in to see Dr. David Dryland. After her appointment I suddenly knew that this was a REAL affliction but now there WAS A CURE. She started on Mirapex 3/7/05 and six weeks later she has NO PAIN! After reading this book everything that had been happening was so clear. It helped me get her to this point and the last seminar Dr. Dryland held helped me personally (The content will be in his next book "Taking Control of YOur Fight or Flight Response - An Instruction Manual to the Human Brain" coming out in July 2005.) as well as gave my wife a way to keep the pain away forever without medication later on. If you have Fibro or your spouse, sibling, or anyone you know has it, help them by reading this book. Soon there will be no fibro sufferers left...if they are smart enough to read this book. Thanks Dr. Dryland.
A life-changing book!.......2005-05-09
Forget about treating your symptoms -- this book will teach you how to get rid of fibromyalgia once and for all. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in January by Dr. Dryland. Since then, I followed the steps in this book and am thrilled to report that I no longer have any fibromyalgia symptoms. If you, or someone you love, thinks they might have fibro, you need this book.

Product Description
Dryland agriculture is of more consequence now than ever because the worlds dependence on food produced in dryland areas is even greater. In recognition of this, and the fact that global food supply is increasingly interconnected, this volume takes a world view of dryland production continent by continent. The initial chapters of the monograph address the principles that underlie all dryland farming, and are the basis for the following chapters that address dryland farming issues around the world.

Customer Reviews:
highly questionable ethics.......2006-05-11
There should be no doubt about Mr Picano being a talented author: despite the many unnecessary abbreviations already pointed out by other reviewers his writing is proficient.
We face here a long, hard SF novel, fairly well paced; a good plot structure (one chapter for the outer space adventures of Ay'r and companions - one for the intrigues of politicians); interesting issues such as racism, distribution of wealth, individual vs general interest, alternative sexuality. All this coming from an unspecialised writer, one who does not write SF only.
One severe flaw I found in this novel is the lacking characterization of some of the main characters: Ay'r, for example, who in my opinion lacks depth and acts inconsistently; P'al too is someone whose thoughts and actions are inexplicable. For such major flaw only I would have taken three stars, but this is a very long novel and it is clear that Mr Picano chose to focus more on the width of scope, a goal he achieved.
Another problem is to believe that a culture that can mesh the genes of three different people to produce a single embryo and possesses artificial wombs can have difficulties in conquering a virus who simply destroys the woman's natural womb (anybody knows that any body cell contains a complete dna which could theoretically be duplicated and cloned into a new being).
Some readers might be confused by the first chapters: the author introduces a lot of characters and settings at a time and it takes quite a bit of concentration to keep all the loose threads in mind until they finally begin to intertwine.
I took all stars out of the rating because I really do not like how Mr Picano treats some issues. Everyone is entitled to his own opinions and the novel is good but I simply could not stand that attitude.
I wish to discuss the matter thoroughly but to do so I have to give away much of the plot. Those who have not read the novel yet may therefore wish to stop reading NOW.
SPOILER ### SPOILER ### SPOILER ### SPOILER
Ay'r's father chose, when there was still no cyber virus in sight, to study new reproductive possibilities, such as the possibilities for males to carry children in their own womb and was therefore prosecuted by the matriarchy which saw his attempts as a menace. Though I am a strong supporter of the idea that an entirely sane and emancipated male has to possess and develop many psychological aspects traditionally considered feminine, I cannot see how it can seem right to alter a perfectly functional course of things for the sake of scientifical research.
After his ban from the Matriarchy Ay'r's father and "mother" decide to continue their researches in the faraway world of Pelagia. To do so they kidnap the young men of the planet, inject them with hormones and dna and implant them with an artificial womb to assign them later to a companion. These chemicals alter their character, nature and partly their body, changing perfectly straight men into sex starved effeminate gays and forcing them to bear at least a child.
Such chemical, if existent, would probably make the joy of many transexuals and I would not object such a substance but I happen to find it disgusting to force such a change on an unwilling subject. Moreover parenthood is not a task to be undertaken lightly nor to be forced on someone. The changed boys are said to be happy with their new life, their change is useful to prevent the end of humankind due to the above mentioned cyber virus and Ay'r cursorily mentions his being perplexed about the kidnappings but he later accepts the fact and is going to become a rich man thanks to the patent of the process without the author's bothering to make any more objection.
Of course this is only smalltalk, there being no such DNA chemicals, something I am deeply thankful for, but I simply cannot cope with such a lax sense of what is right and wrong. Nothing (not even the end of humankind) can justify such lack of ethics and respect for human dignity and freedom of choice: an author is at freedom to mention anything for the sake of a good story but he should not try to convince us that what is wrong is wright.
Very disappointed..........2006-03-20
I got a used copy of this book and was glad I hadn't paid full price. It bothers be when the characters start reciting History lessons as a way of explaining the story.
I felt like I was reading a techinical manual and not enjoying the book.
One of the few books I didn't even finish.
Good premise, terrible storytelling........2005-04-29
I checked Dryland's End out on a whim, and I'm glad that I did--instead of buying it on a whim. Were it a movie, it's the sort I'd recommend you don't buy but perhaps check out from Blockbuster for a night's entertainment--and then go watch something better.
Felice Picano is not a good storyteller. He's not horrible, but his ability to hold my attention--compounded by awkward language, cookie-cutter characters, and terrible science--waned as I got further through the book. I only made it halfway through before my desire to find out the "great mystery" behind everything petered out completely, in large part due to the fact I couldn't stand any of the characters. The protagonist, Ay'r, is lackluster and uninteresting, with nothing to distinguish him from his companion P'al at all. Many of the female characters--despite Picano's "revolutionary" premise of a female-ruled society--end up as nothing more than bags of machismo, men with their breasts pasted on. Instead of being fascinating, the move is as boring as portraying all dominant male characters in the same light--and utterly uninteresting.
While it claims to be a work of "science" fiction, and given Picano's reference in the introduction to the works of Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov, the science--especially the biological science--is terrible. At several points we're supposed to believe in the idea of "Fasts", space ships with "Plastro-Beryllium" (Plastro-Beryllium, by the way, is atomic number 900--despite the fact science has yet to discover any stable, natural element beyond 92!) hulls that can shrink to the size of an electron and because "electrons have next to no mass" they can exceed lightspeed. (As anyone who knows anything about linear accelerators can tell you, this is patently not so!) At others, we're presented the idea that a society with cloning techniques perfected to the point they can produce perfect children from three or more genetic contributors could be completely wiped out by a "microvirus" that renders its women sterile and changes the X chromosomes into something "completely different". (This is after destroying the reproductive organs completely in under twenty-four hours, with the only symptoms--instead of the expected massive internal hemorrhaging or blood poisoning or other evidences of toxic shock as several pounds of cell-death products are suddenly dumped into the blood stream--being a mild rash and a high fever.)
Needless to say, as a student of biology, this made me want to bash my head into a wall repeatedly in attempts to reassert my suspension of disbelief. Alas, this was not to be.
All of these problems are compounded by Feli. Pic. insistance on use. contract.s aft. having intro.d the term they corresp. to only onc. or twi.. This, coupled with the capitalization of EVERY new species name and EVERY new term he's invented, made for terribly choppy reading--as did the poor editting job and the absolutely horrible dialogue that ended in exclamation points half the time! (At least his characters weren't so excitable as to use two!!)
Anyway. Off the top of my head I can name several books that took on the topics Picano attempted to cover in this "opus" of science fiction, and did it better. His story suffered from trying to cram in a coming-of-age story (try Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card) with a futuristic society ruled by women cheek-by-jowl with one ruled by men (Heart of Gold, Sharon Shinn), with gender roles either switched or made equivalent and consequence-free sex abounding (Dreamsnake, Vonda McIntyre), in which an important role was played by a special new atomic element that allowed space travel (Psion, Joan D. Vinge, but don't just read it for the politics!)...
I could go on. But it does suffer seriously from the attempt to cram in far too much at once, which resulted in a host of uninteresting or laughably unbelievable characters, a murky plot, and the general unreadability of the book--combined with poor editting and horrid writing style.
Do yourself a favor--save the sixteen bucks, or go buy Ender's Game and Psion. It'll be much more worth your time.
A simple warning... Mostly just about the loveliness........2005-04-02
Please do note. If you love science fiction you will enjoy this but it has very progressive themes. So if you think your male pride will get hurt... Maybe you shouldn't read it.. If you enjoy alternative sexual oriention lesbian or gay male then you might enjoy it. But remember this book is first Science Fiction before it is gay. If you don't enjoy both in some capacity this will not be a good read and should be avoided. Everyone has different taste in books. You should know already whether you would be interested or not.
As far as the characters I do agree that their was amazing development. They really did exist in my mind. The plot is conceivable as in way way in the future conceivable. Some things did make me question the validity of the situations. But not enough to dislike or turn away from it and I'm the type who would find those things. Beautiful piece of Science fiction.
don't waste your time.......2004-09-20
Although the premise is good, the execution is poor. Overwritten, poorly edited, no good, consistent character development and an overall arrogant tone make this a waste of time. Herbert, Lewis and Delany do it better, cleaner and more interesting. This is the first Picano book I've read and I'll avoid the others.

Book Description
Fibromyalgia is a common and chronic medical disordercharacterized by widespread pain and often coupledwith other symptoms such as fatigue, disturbed sleep, chronic headaches, and other ailments. Recent researchshows that the disorder is directly related to decreasedlevels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. The solution, renowned rheumatologist Dr. David Dryland argues, isto regulate levels of dopamine in the body through an"off-label protocol" using the FDA-approved medicationsMirapex and Requip, which help mute painsignals traveling from the body to the brain. This vitaland necessary book will also show readers how to:- develop a protocol to successfully treat fibromyalgia- identify what causes the disease and its debilitatingflare-ups- determine which symptoms can be attributed tofibromyalgia and which cannot- use non-drug treatments for relieving the painfulsymptoms of the disease- and more.

Get it for the Dopamine info.......2007-08-06
I've had FMS full-blown since 1999 and am disabled from it. I've read a lot of books and have knowledge of this condition and the neurological processes that rivals most doctors I've encountered. The dopamine connection is a very powerful one, and definitely something that FMS people should investigate. I've said for years that FMS is more a neurological-based condition. I'm glad that research is finally coming out about it and Dr. Dryland is ahead of the pack with his book. I will say that some of the info is your standard how-to-help-your-FMS fare, that any experienced and knowledgeable FMS person will already know and can skim through. So, I recommend it for the dopamine/ANS (autonomic nervous system) info and research. That may be the key to solving our illness. At least we're getting closer. Thank you Dr. Dryland for bringing this to light.
Restoring Dopamine has Restored My Life.......2007-07-23
The key point to Dr. Dryland's work with Fibromyalgia is that dopamine is depleted. This is due to a chronic, abnormally functioning stress response. In Dr. Dryland's personal case he was able to restore his dopamine level without medication and his symptoms of Fibromyalgia subsided. Patients can use his skillful method to alter their stress response with or without medication. From the very beginning Dr. Dryland has pointed out that Mirapex and Requip are used to accelerate the process and are the best medicines that he can offer at this time. He points out that new and better medication that raise dopamine may become available in the future.
I have dealt with some side affects from Mirapex for almost three years. Yet for me the choice is crystal clear. Without Mirapex, the constant stinging pain down my arms and spine from stress hormones every minute of the day makes a miserable existence. Every little stress becomes a Tsunami-like event. I rely on Mirapex, the stress reduction techniques found in this book and a self administered herb called Mucuna to stabilize my condition. Restoring dopamine means that I can have a more normal life. My senses tolerate a wider range of sensations. All pain - fibro and non-fibro - has substantially reduced. Best of all I am far calmer in the face of most daily stress. After a lifetime of an over-active stress response and more than 20 years of fibro -
Restoring Dopamine has Restored My Life.

Excellent book!.......2007-07-14
I just finished reading this book and must say it is one of the best I have read. Dr. Dryland's approach from the aspect that fibromyalgia comes from depletion of dopamine due to an overactive fight or flight response is very interesting. While I am not willing to try the two meds he talks about in the book for raising dopamine levels, I am very interested in using natural methods to lower the fight or flight response. He even has a website for this method. He is supposed to be coming out with a new book soon on the fight or flight response and I will be watching for it. He has cured his own fibromyalgia and restored many of his patients. It is an intriguing book even if you don't totally agree with every little thing. I highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from fibromyalgia.

No magic cure and Mirapex is not the answer for every fibromyalgia patient........2007-06-29
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FMS) in 2000 by Dr. Dryland. It was a long process just to get diagnosed, so I was optimistic when Dr. Dryland offered Mirapex as a treatment option.
Mirapex is a drug used for Parkinson's patients. Its side effects (at least for me...) were very tough to take. Severe nausea and slight dizziness were from the start, and at higher doses (you slowly work up to a specified dose) I began exibiting Parkinson's-like symptoms. My flat affect, hand tremors and stumbling gate had not occured until I took this medication.
After two years on this medication and giving it my all, I asked to be taken off Mirapex. I asked Dr. Dryland if there were any more holisitc approaches that could be taken to get me beyond the battle with FMS symptoms and he told me had nothing else to offer me. I did not return to Dr. Dryland and began seeking other options.
Dr. Dryland is a bright man, a researcher and now an author with a thriving practice. I believe his book has some good basic FMS info and talks about getting good sleep, exercising, reducing stress and eating well (all things we should all do whether we have FMS or not). But know that before you buy this book, there are many books (some of which you may already own) which give you the same information on FMS. Mirapex is the drug he believes in, and that is 'breatktrhough' mentioned in the title.
While my own journey with fibromyalgia has had its ups and downs and Mirapex part of the trip, I am encouraged by a new drug; NOT MIRAPEX, that is currently in the final stages of a clinical trial. It's called Milcinipran.
I was a study participant for Milcinipran (an anti-depressant and not mentioned in Dr. Dryland's book...) which made me feel like my old self again! Having never taken an anti-depressant, I was sceptical about the study and taking this drug, but after a year, I was virtually pain free and full of energy while taking Milcinipran. After I went off the year-long study, my symptoms returned.
While I manage my symptoms and flares on a day-to-day basis, I am learning more about what triggers flares and how to ride them out. Knowing that there are drugs that will indeed help me instead of numbing me out, is of great comfort to me at this stage of the game.
Whether you buy the book or not: remember to keep holding out hope for better. Eat right. Exercise. Take care of yourself and only take vitamins, supplements and drugs that help you.
Milcinipran may go to the FDA as soon as next month and will offer a lot of relief to fibro patients without the side effects of Mirapex. And no... I don't work for the company that makes it.

Book Description
Drylands, which cover over half of the world's area, have witnessed rapid development, exploitation and change with the discovery of mineral reserves, urbanization, and population growth. Environmental management is critical to the conservation and sustainable use of resources. Now available in paperback, this comprehensive book offers a systematic study of the physical nature of drylands and the history of human response to and uses of these harsh landscapes. Detailed case studies including urban as well as pastoral drylands from California to Soviet Central Asia, the Middle East, the Sahara, and Australia contrast different management approaches and problems.
