I don't need to tell Saiyuki fans the whole of this story. And since I'm collecting all of them, it's a bit pointless. The anime doesn't do justice to the stories contained in the manga. Fans of the anime need ot read the Manga. That's all there is to it. Basically, the beginning of this volume outlines a few more things that happened while they were all in and around Chang-An temple. It seems like mostly filler, but it details a number of things that you get to wondering about while reading the series. If you're a fan, get it. If you're just interested in seeing what this series is about, start at the beginning, because you will get lost.

I own it, I love it, and I want more!

Very entertaining read but a little far out there........2007-05-14

I believe that no police department would contract civilian help just because the civilian has fast and accurate gun training. I know if there's one person that can shoot fast and accurately there are others, especially in our police forces. There is no need to go to a civilian for help. Otherwise this was a very entertaining book that's well written. I'd recommmend it to anyone that likes to shoot.

Love this book and B-Zone. Read them both twice. Plan to do it again. Can't wait for Al Voth to come out with more Nathan Burdett adventures.

Great Sequel to B-Zone.......2004-05-21

Al Voth's second book is a huge improvement over his first effort. The characters, including the hero, Nathan Burdett, are more developed, and the story line is more believable. There are several plot twists that keep the novel interesting, and compelling. The book is very hard to put down. As a side note, all technical details relating to firearms and hunting are technically correct. There is nothing that stops the flow of a story more than reading Hollywood style lies about firearms or inaccurate technical data related to firearms. This book contains nothing to stop the action. Five Stars.

Now, we;re getting somewhere!!.......2004-04-07

Mr. Voth's first book, B-Zone, was burdened with a simplistic characters, predictable plot, and the relative inexperience of the writer. In spite of all that, it was an interesting and fun read.

Now comes the sequel, and it treats the first book as a mere introductory chapter to the REAL story! Mr. Voth has obviously taken criticisms of the first book to heart as character development, writing style, and the plot are all much improved.
The plot twists, while sometimes foreseeable, contain just enough unpredictability to keep you wondering.

Technical detail is superb, a feature usually sadly lacking in books of this genre. The characters start to come alive as we see more details into their motivation, flaws, and humanity. Sub-plots make their appearance, and start to intricately weave through and divert the main plot line.

I look forward to the third book of this series. Hopefully, it will be better still!

Truely a shooters book.......2002-07-19

I loved the book. As a competitive shooter, I found the book technically accurate as well as entertaining. I couldn't put it down. I ordered the the first book, "The B-Zone," at the same time and read one after the other. I can't wait for the third book.

Saiyuki Reload manga the best!!!.......2006-08-08

I've read the 1st 3 volumes of Saiyuki reload and I absolutely love it! I just can;t wait for the 4th, 5th and 6th volume! While I must say the anime is really good too, the mangas always seem to shine more. The artwork is splendid as usual. (see Sanzo!) And the storyline stays in tact. Loads of reminiscing their past and defeating youkai, as usual, but it always adds a touch of humour to it.

What a great series!.......2006-04-05

The anime never did the Manga justice. Certain episodes in Gensomaden Saiyuki came close. In Reload 3, the story arc, "against the stream" ends and the new story arc, the astounding "burial" begins. In "burial" we have all the elements of Saiyuki we love - great characterization, deeply emotional story lines and of course the poignant humour and wit. It is also from here the anime and manga deviates and of course nothing can ever beat Minekura's manga version.
Just found out that the "burial" story arc will be made into OVA this year and this is definitely something to look forward to.

Finally!.......2006-03-04

This is the volume of Saiyuki Reload where things finally get back on track. In the last two books it was mainly the guys playing around or getting sidetracked- something even they comment on in the book. It might not be super accurate to say things got going again in volume 3, because a good half of it is all about the past. But everything's back to being lyrical philosophy with a sting in the tail, and the characters with thier hybrid dark/funny personalities are doing stuff relevant to the overall scheme of things.

The first section is a wrap-up of the last episode-kou and his party struggling with how to handle his brainwashing and thier feelings of loyalty. Next up- a look into the FAR past, long before the Sanzo group ever came face to face. These solemn vignettes come to the surface after being buried in memories of the dead or unreachable- a hauntingly beautiful example of dramatic irony, as the Sanzo group is unlikely to discover such truths. Highly significant events involving Sanzo's master and a certain villain are revealed to the reader. Following that is a story about Sanzo, likely containing the key moment when he became the shamelessly callous and brutal person he is now. After that is a short and sweet shot of Sanzo and Goku's first meeting. And lastly, a small gag section about the journey reaching its one year anniversary.

Saiyuki Reload has hit its stride. The characters are being thier manic selves, simultaneously hilarious, poetic, murderous, and saintly. The art is as clean as it has been for the past few books, and the script has Minekura's usual wit. With everything in place, the only thing left to say is that the wait for #4 is on.

This is one of the greatest anime/manga series in my opinion. It has a lot of action, but does do that reflecting on emotions and relationships. I greatly enjoyed this book, and all the others in both series. If you are a fan of action/adventures and don't mind a few swear words(I lie, ever other words out of their mouths is a swear), then you should be reading this!

Simply a great and endearing series !.......2006-01-07

Those of us familiar with the direction of the anime will recognize that the story arc starting with "Against the stream" in manga Reload 2 is shown in the anime Reload Gunlock, to be released by Geneon soon. Fans should be pleased that Manga Reload 6 is due for release in Japan this month after such a long wait. Saiyuki is not Minekura's only project and the lady does invest tremendous effort into her manga. Just look at the marvellous graphics details and shading. I think it was in 1996 that Saiyuki made its first appearance.

For anyone interested, Saiyuki Gaiden (Volume 1 and 2 manga books), which concentrate on the 4 protagonists' previous lifes 500 years ago, have just been released in Japan. These 2 volumes are brilliant. The fact that they are in Japanese should not deter any fan. The translation is available from the website developed by some kind souls. Still I wish Tokyopop will acquire the rights to Saiyuki Gaiden. The previous lifes of Sanzo/Konzen, Goku, Hakkai/Tenpou and Gojyo/Kenren are just as fascinating though poignant.
And of course those of us who embrace Gensomaden Saiyuki are aware that Saiyuki Gaiden Vol 1 was shown in that first Saiyuki anime series.

What is there not to like to the Tokyopop's translation of Saiyuki Reload? Loaded with creative funny one liners that never repeats (unlike the Japanese version)and reminds me a lot of the English dub of the ADV Gensomaden Saiyuki.
The only con is, sometimes Tokyopop doesn't fill in a word balloon and the quality is crappy compare to the Japanese version but hey is cheap.

A very horrible translation..........2007-07-16

I would not recommend reading this... mainly because of Tokyopop's horrid translations. Tokyopop has a big habit of butchering their comics with awful slang and overly-acting curses, and Saiyuki Reload isn't an exception. They replace such memorable lines we are all used to, such as, "Stupid Monkey!" with garbage potty-mouth words which I won't repeat here. They also curse WAY too much, it was not like that in the original Japanese version. I also spotted a few times where they decided to truncate lines and thus not leaving the whole real speech. This would change story-lines and characters. I have only read the first volume of Tokyopop's version, so I can't say for the rest of the volumes, who knows how they faired(Tokyopop has a habit of switching around translators and editors for each volume of their series). But most likely, they all spawned into the garbage like the first book. It is a shame because Saiyuki is such a wonderful story with very good artwork. Too bad it was ruined. Stay away.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Reload is basically a spy/thriller type of story. Cue one assassination and one dead president. The story works back from there as to why it happens, and who did it.

A man tasked to find the killer has to decided whether or not the assassin is in the right, given what he finds out, and the various politics motivations of the different parties in the book.

Mek is a cyberpunk story, at its heart. Mek is short for mechanical augmentation, and when the founder/inventor of this sort of technology and society gets back involved much later, she finds it greatly different.

Great short stories.......2006-04-20

Originally released as a three part miniseries, done in a flipbook style (which Ellis also did with Tokyo Storm Warning / Red) the two short stories Reload and Mek show a simplified version of what makes Warren Ellis' stories great.

The story of Reload begins with the assassination of the President of the United States and continues to get more intense. The assassin is incredibly well trained, and someone in the government seems to be covering for her. (And it's not the reason you think.) One secret service agent is stuck between stopping the assassin, who continues to attack government agencies, and the government he's trying to save.

Despite the short length of the story, Ellis manages to drop clues as to where he's going, and gives enough characterization that you care about the people involved.

Mek is a story about people augmenting their bodies with mechancial enhancements. Some Mek is used only for physical enhancements, on the level of tattoos or piercings, and some Mek is used for augmentation, such as enhanced eye-sight, or having a cell phone in your head. But then there's Bad Mek, military enhancements like guns, which are being obtained illegally and the results are violent wars between gangs and organized crime.

Enter Sarissa Leon, who helped start the Mek movement as a way of enhancing culture. She moved to Washinton D.C. to continue to lobby for the rights of Mek users, but the violent death of her ex-boyfriend has brought her back into a subculture which barely recognizes her.

The story is obviously intended, at least partly, to be a metaphor for the drug culture. What started as something that artists and hippies used to expand their minds has become a source of violent crime, drug abuse, and death.

Again the characterization is excellent, and despite the short space, Ellis manages to create a decent mystery.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the art work. On Reload Paul Gulacy and Jimmy Palmiotti illustrate thrilling action sequences. I can hear the gunfire and the explosions even though no onomatopoeia appears on the page. On Mek Steve Rolston and Al Gordon capture a wonderful techno-punk look for the characters, sort of goth cyborgs. And the cityscapes, while simple, are excellent, with varied sizes and shapes to the buildings, something sorely lacking in most comic book artists' repotoires.

This book shows all of Warren Ellis' strengths. His ability tell a good story, his characterization, his counter-culture ideals.

I read this book in one sitting, but I'm definately going to go back and read it again.
