It fails to deliver what it advertised, but provided a good story anyhow........2005-07-07
I looked forward to reading this novel after completing "Execution Hour". It took me a while, but I managed to find a copy that did not have a price tag that threatened to burst the threadbare seams of my wallet like a brood of genestealers erupting from a fallen seed spore!
I came away from the final page of this book, feeling an equal measure of satisfaction and disappointment. If you read the back cover of the book, you'll notice a plot description that refers to the Blackstone Fortresses. It never appears in the story. It is never even alluded to in the story. However, the story is still well-written and will inspire many BFG players. While the series appears to be focused around the exploits of a prominent naval officer during the fabled Gothic War, this installment takes you from the awakening of an Avatar through the building tension between two mortal enemies and their attempts to form an uneasy alliance against a powerful enemy neither of them can hope to vanquish alone, and all the way up to the pivotal space battle that sees a combined force of Battlefleet Gothic and Craftworld Eldar defeating a Chaos Armada in one of the pivotal battles of that war.
There is intrigue, deception, and insightful sequences that help bring further understanding of the internal politics that rule within Abbadon's regime, among the Craftworld Eldar, and amongst the Imperial Navy.
Although I never found out what the Blackstone Fortress is or what significance it has, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it without hesitation to anyone looking for an interesting read.
OK, but a little flat.......2003-12-15
Not nearly as good as the previous book, Execution Hour. This book starts well, but seems to be lacking the inspiration to carry itself all the way through. The plot is so straightforward that a lot of the suspense is lost. The dark eldar fail to inspire the dread, loathing and alien maliciousness which I feel they are capable of. Not a bad book, and it does have a few memorable moments. Gordon Rennie has a real gift for describing space battles.
in need of a united story thread.......2003-09-12
I purchased this book on the strength of his previous novel, Execution Hour. With that storyline fresh in my head I jumped right into this book. The book is a page turner but roughly a third of the way in there is little mention of Semper or his ship. There is no mention of the previous plotline and the new characters that are introduced are rather shallow and quickly set aside. The detail is superb and when the action finally does begin it is fast and furious. The only problem is that like other Black Library books the novel is limited to 300 pages and thus the books ending is very rushed and leaves you feeling empty and a bit dissapointed. The novel seems to be a set up for a third novel which in my opinion could have been better served by putting out a 600 page book and giving the reader something worth spending money on. I'm sorely tempted to turn my back on this series and go back to Gaunt and his Ghosts. (whose adventures are also constrained by the 300 page limit, but much better written imho.)
Excellant!!.......2003-07-04
After reading the first few chapters of Execution Hour-I really did not think that I would enjoy this story line. In due time of course I became hooked and Execution Hour turned out to be a fabulous story. Its sequal "Shadow Point" takes place some time after the events of its precursor and though there are some open questions left unanswered the book is a truly gripping story. THe focus of this story is basically a build up of things to come in the next book, as the desperate Imperial forces attempt to forge an alliance with the Eldar in order to stop the powers of chaos from attaining an ancient powerful Eldar artifact. However the fragile alliance is threatened by the deceits of the Dark Eldar.
After reading through the book I can imagine several people disappointed at the portrayal of certain elements that do not adhere to strict Warhammer 40K rules or stats (ie. sheer power of the Avatar of the Eldar)---and I say to this that it is as it should be. The writers are portraying their vision of the Warhammer 40K universe and therefore do not need to create a balance between the armies that is necessary for "fair" game play. People are forgetting (or are blinded by favoritism) that the stats in the game are all equalized so that not one single army can said to be the best. Reality (if it were) would be far different.
Shadow Point is an excellant read and another fine book in the Warhammer 40K universe.

The sad story of Hiroshima.......2003-03-05
It was so sad that the first A-Bomb was dropped in Hiroshima, Japan and ended up killing more than 100,000 people. This book gives a lot of information into this tradegy. It gives helpful information about the background of Hiroshima and why there was conflict, the invention of the atomic bomb, the reconstruction and restoration process, and the high price of progress. I know that people were badly burned by high temperatures and got scars. Also it ruined the neighbors, buildings, people including jobs in Hiroshima when so many people were wounded. The war in WWII was taken over by Japanese people to get to Korea and attack them and get their independence. This occurred when Japanese expansion went through China and attacked. The Allies U.S., USSR and Great Britain agreed that Europe and Japan should soon be democratic and not use communism. For the second time, the atomic bomb was dropped in Nagasaki and it was more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. Less people died, and the buildings were completely destroyed. Many years later, Hiroshima had built modern buildings. The dome was blasted with the Atomic Bomb in 1945 and more than 55 years later, they can't even finish this dome because I know they will never build it much. Japan began to rebuild its city. Jobs were created, buidings were restored and the people got on with their lives. However, there was a protest from the U.S. government about the expansion tactics. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor that is in US and it was the Japanese aircrafts that attacked it. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the events taking place before the bombing at Hiroshima and the effects of this event on the rest of ythe world. This is a realistic account of the facts as they occcurred during and before Hiroshima and the conflicts that still exist today.

Fun for spankophiles to read!.......2004-07-07
I own several of the SHADOW LANE series and have enjoyed reading them very much. And this one is no exception.
Reading the first book in the series is nice but not necessary for enjoying SHADOW LANE II. In this you will be introduced to many characters in and around the fictional northeastern town of Random Point where many people from many backgrounds engage in consenting adult spanking. They spank at parties and they spank in private -- and not always indoors!
In understanding the structure of the book, it helps to know that this is a collection of short stories that Eve Howard has put in magazines and publications from Shadow Lane (an enterprise catering to spankophiles that Ms. Howard has built up over the years). For this reason, you may read introductions in some stories of characters you have already met in earlier chapters. The progression of the overall story goes on just as nicely.
So sit back, relax, get yourself a nice glass of something cold to drink (or hot if it's winter outside) and enjoy this book for exactly what it is -- good, fun to read and VERY sensual spanking entertainment.

The House of Many Incomplete Writing Styles .......2006-06-21
When I first picked this book up, I was very excited about the premise. I loved how Barbara Michaels set up the story and characters. However, I keep waiting for "all the loose ends" to come together. It was almost like Michaels had gotten annoyed writing the book and just wanted to finish. Therefore, leaving all sorts of loop holes. Issues were brought up in the beginning of the book and were never really explained by the end, or what their merit held in the dynamics of the story. I felt like Andy and Meg both did things that were totally out of character towards the end of the book. Especially based on how Michaels developed their traits and personalities. Perhaps that is just poor development of character.
I must give Michaels credit on her historical and supernatural references throughout the book, these were the only enjoyable parts of this novel. When I bought this book, I also bought another one of her books, "Here I Stay". In contrast, after reading "The House of Many Shadows", I returned "Here I Stay" to the store. It might be a wonderful book, but I don't want to invest the time in another lame duck. I am patient when reading a book and don't mind if the story takes a while to acquire it's conclusion. However, the book finally needs to demonstrate a conduit. Look if you want abstract story lines, watch a few episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
An excellent book.......2006-04-08
I read this book about seven years ago, when I was in grade 9. It remains to this day one of my favourites, and is one of only two books I even remember reading that year.
This is a must read for anyone who loves a good suspense.
amazing!.......2004-07-16
I have read several Michaels books, but this is one of my favorite. This one I could not put down and finished it in 2 days. These are some of her better characters and the story starts off rather quickly. It sure kept me quessing and is scary enough to satisfy any reader. And leave it to Michaels to throw in a good love story.
Her best ever!.......2004-02-28
I first came across this book when I was a kid, at the school library & have read it a dozen times since & it's still my very favorite. I still finish with an awestruck shake of my head & think about it for hours afterward. Best book I've ever read & I've read thousands.
Chilling---wonderful for a cold winter's night.......2003-04-10
I have read and re-read this book countless times---and I still find myself needing to check under the bed after reading it!
At the urging of her bossy cousin, Sylvia, Meg moves in to an old Pennsylvania farm house which Sylvia owns. On the surface, Meg is there to recuperate from an accident but Sylvia has also persuaded her to help restore the house so it can be donated to the local historical society. Andy, Sylvia's adult stepson, has also been enlisted to help in the restoration.
Since her accident, Meg has suffered from auditory hallucinations...but while at the farmhouse, Meg suddenly begins to experience visual hallucinations. At first, she dismisses them as the result of her accident but when it becomes clear that Andy is seeing the same "hallucinations" both Andy and Meg are forced to acknowledge the unthinkable---the house is haunted.
Barbara Michaels is an incredibly gifted writer of suspense/ghost stories. She combines the ordinary with the extraordinary---most of her heroines are skeptics which make their experiences with the supernatural even more chilling. You know that these are not the fanciful people who would see ghosts wherever they are. In fact, these are the people who will deny the ghost's existence until the last possible moment.
As an historian, I love the research Michaels puts into her books (and she makes it seem effortless!). She does an incredible job recreating the past and providing you with wonderful tidbits of historical information---all without hectoring or lecturing you!
Buy this book---but make sure that there aren't any impending power outages when you sit down to read it because you'll want to keep the lights burning for at least a week after you've read this!

Six years after solving the mysteries surrounding the death of her father (in The Ruby in the Smoke), Sally Lockhart has set up her own consulting business. But her photographer friend, Fred Garland, has a habit of drawing her into his private detective work owing to her skill in both finances and firearms. When one of Sally's clients loses a large sum of money invested in a shipping firm and Fred encounters a conjurer on the lam from underworld thugs, the two begin to find links in these apparently disparate cases.
Exquisitely written and packed with a wonderfully diverse, often terrifying cast of characters and dark twists and turns of plot, the second installment of the Sally Lockhart trilogy--an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a Booklist Editors' Choice, and a nominee for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Mystery--is entirely impossible to put down. Make sure book 3, The Tiger in the Well, is close at hand as you near the end of this one. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
The year is 1878, and Sally Lockhart has started her own financial consulting business. When a client loses a fortune in the unexpected collapse of a British shipping firm, Sally is determined to find out why. But as she comes closer to learning the identity of the firm's elusive owner, she discovers that her questions are far from simple --and that the answers could cost her her life.
"Fraud, fire, and bloody murder pursue Sally Lockhart in a fine sequel to The Ruby in the Smoke. Sally, now 22, is in business as a financial consultant. When she and her friends challenge corrupt financial interests, they find themselves in a web of intrigue that stretches from fetid slums of the poor to the corporate offices of the richest man in Europe. Sally's detective work reveals the connections between corrupt power and broken lives. The action is fast, scenes are tight and dramatic, the language is vivid, and the wealth of minor characters are sharply individualized. An immensely entertaining thriller."--(starred) Booklist. Reading level: 6.7.
Customer Reviews:
Confusing, but good.......2007-10-05
I loved Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy so much, so I picked up his Sally Lockhart series to keep my glow going. They're really good; not quite as incredible as the HDM books, but very interesting, engaging and suspenseful. I loved the first book in the series. This one, book 2, was a lot more confusing than book 1. I think there may have been too many characters to keep straight; I kept confusing their names and agendas. That said, it still gripped me and held me in the story through the end.
Puts the "Adult" back in "Young Adult".......2007-02-25
I greatly appreciate Pullman's tendency to treat young readers as capable of dealing with sophisticated ideas like religious controversy, drug addiction, violence, and sex. Indeed, youth deal with these things in their everyday lives, and they need literature that addresses them without the aggrandizement or gloss with which they are so often depicted on TV. This novel, with its vivid characters and life-like depictions of 19th century London, treats its young readers with respect.
Not ultimately satisfying.......2006-06-13
Having read the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy, I turned to this, the first so-called "Sally Lockhart" novel I have read, but the second in the series. There's a complex plot which, in its final analysis, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There's a strange, irrational mixture of the supernatural and the mundane. There are two important female characters that are not brought to any kind of life, so that they are fundamentally voids in the page: Sally and Isabel. There's a villain who always seems to think two or three steps ahead of our (apparently nearly completely mindless) heroes, who basically just sit around or parade around waiting for someone to try to kill them, or succeed in killing them. And the villain himself is vanquished by a moronic, suicidal strategy that wouldn't trick or disarm even a tiny child in our universe. Precisely all these problems are also found everywhere in the DARK MATERIALS trilogy, so I suspect these problems will be found in all the books Pullman has written.
By the way, the "Sally Lockhart" books do not form a trilogy, whatever Amazon may say. Last time I counted there were four books in this series listed on Pullmann's website, and the copy of NORTH I have, a Canadian trade paperback, seems to list five or six different titles!?! I am not very eager to read any of the others!
Shadow in the North.......2005-12-12
Pullman, Philip. (1986). Shadow in the North.
New York: Random House, Inc.
In this book, Sally Lockhart is a financial consulatant and one of her clients, Miss Wlash, comes to see her. She says that since Sally told her to invest in a company called Anglo-Baltic, she has lost 3,270 punds. One of Sally's friends, Jim Taylor meets a stage magician called Makinnon. He tells Sally that Makinnon needs their help. Fred has proposed to Sally several times and she finally gives in and says yes. But that same night, Bellman has his men set fred's house on fire. Eveyone gets out okay, except fred who dies in the fire. Sally decides to go after Bellman and found out the truth behind the Steam Gun. Bellman is expecting her, and proposes to her (she says yes) and he agrees to show her the steam gun. After he explains how the steam gun works she shoots him with her gun.
One of the themes in this book is love, because Sally and Fred love each other, but she won't admit it until the very end.
I loved this book because it had many stall tactics, because throughout the whole book I was wondering if Sally would every say yes to Fred so they would get married. I thought this book was written really well.
The genre of this book is mystery. I would rate this book 4 stars, because it takes a long time to get into the story, but when it finally does, its awesome!
My first book by Philip Pullman- surely it is not the last one!.......2005-10-09
I'm truly amazed. The plot is astonishing, and characters are so realistic. I'm really looking forward to read more books by Philip Pullman.
I just wonder if kids aged 12 are able to understand all the problems and nuisances in "The Shadow in the North". Is this a book for teenagers...?

You Won't Want to Stop Reading!.......2006-04-26
The Shadow of the Red Moon is a book that will keep you up way later than you're supposed to. This book might get you in trouble with your parents, because you won't want to stop reading at any point or time. I liked this book because it is really adventurous. The boy is trying to make it through the wilderness, and he is by himself until he finds two people that are going with him. So they can fulfill the dream their parents had for them ever since they were little. This book is a good book for people in 7th-12th grade. So I guarantee that "You Won't Want to Stop."
I HEARD THE AUDIO CASSETE AND I LOVE IT!.......2005-02-23
It rocks. The story in some parts has action, in others suspense, and other mysteries. This story is unlike any other. If you like history, mystery,or like suspense, I highly recommed this book.
Shadow of the Red Moon.......2002-12-02
The book Shadow of the Red Moon by Walter Dean Myers was a book I don't recommend. That is because Walter Dean Myers I think is a better writer when he writes about the inner city urban community. This book had its ups and it had its downs. At some parts there would be a lot of action and at other you would get bored really easy. Myers made it unique making Jon be half Fen and half Okalian. He was half of the enemy and half of the endangered race of humans. The beginning came with a bang and made you want to read more which I liked a lot but after a little bit it would start going from action to boring and back to action then boring. I thought the book was really weird to do that. I also thought they should of changed Kyra's name to something else that matched his attitude. Like he said in page eighteen ""Go away!" The boy spit his words out angrily." I didn't agree with most of what the book said. It doesn't relate to one thing of real life because it is a fantasy book about prehistoric people. I definitely don't recommend this book to anyone because it doesn't have an exciting plot. I read this book because the cover persuaded me it looked like the name and the illustration had a powerful meaning.
