Book Description
Lively political and public debates on war and morality have been a feature of the post-Cold War world. The Price of Peace argues that a re-examination of the just war tradition is therefore required. The authors suggest that despite fluctuations and transformations in international politics, the just war tradition continues to be relevant. However they argue that it needs to be reworked to respond to the new challenges to international security represented by the end of the Cold War and the impact of terrorism. With an interdisciplinary and transatlantic approach, this volume provides a dialogue between theological, political, military and public actors. By articulating what a reconstituted just war tradition might mean in practice, it also aims to assist policy-makers and citizens in dealing with the ethical dilemmas of war.
Book Description
In June 1999, after three months of NATO air strikes had driven Serbian forces back from the province of Kosovo, the United Nations Security Council authorized creation of an interim civilian administration. Under this mandate, the UN was empowered to coordinate reconstruction, maintain law and order, protect human rights, and create democratic institutions. Six years later, the UN's special envoy to Kosovo, Kai Eide, described the state of Kosovo: "The current economic situation remains bleak. . . . respect for rule of law is inadequately entrenched and the mechanisms to enforce it are not sufficiently developed. . . . with regard to the foundation of a multiethnic society, the situation is grim."
In Peace at Any Price, Iain King and Whit Mason describe why, despite an unprecedented commitment of resources, the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), supported militarily by NATO, has failed to achieve its goals. Their in-depth account is personal and passionate yet analytical and tightly argued. Both authors served with UNMIK and believe that the international community has a duty to intervene in regional conflicts, but they suggest that Kosovo reveals the difficult challenges inherent in such interventions. They also identify avoidable mistakes made at nearly every juncture by the UN and NATO. We can be sure that the international community will be called on to intervene again to restore the peace of shattered countries. The lessons of Kosovo, cogently presented in Peace at Any Price, will be critically important to those charged with future missions.

Incisive and Compelling.......2007-05-16
In the past decade, Kosovo has only ever hit the headlines because of violence and tragedy. Ethnic cleansing, war crimes, NATO intervention: these events dominated the news agenda for the first six months of 1999 and defined Kosovo's international reputation. Sadly, destruction is more telegenic than construction, and the important attempts to steer Kosovo towards a better future have received far less attention.
The authors' task is to tell the story of the UN mission that has administered Kosovo from the early days after NATO intervention through to - presumably - its imminent independence (conditional, supervised or however formulated). This is the first significant study of UNMIK, and succeeds brilliantly in illuminating its challenges, dilemmas and limitations.
From its uncertain first steps, by 2001 UNMIK oversaw the largest per-capita investment in peacebuilding that the world has ever seen. Yet the returns on that investment have been unimpressive, yielding a host of lessons that the "international community" urgently needs to learn if it is to succeed in elsewhere.
Paying particular attention to the orchestrated ethnic violence of March 2004, the authors convincingly portray an international community consistently unwilling to confront hardliners in the Kosovo Albanian community. This timidity is the source of the failure identified in the title, and has long-term consequences for Kosovo and its population.
As a ground-breaking study, the book almost inevitably left me wanting more. What could UNMIK realistically have achieved, given the timeframe and resources available? How much influence could a short-term mission - however well-resourced - really exert over Kosovo's long-term development? Social and political change is a long-term process, yet western politics - under the scrutiny of the 24-hour media - demands rapid results. Do we really have the stomach for the necessary long-term engagement, or are we content simply with the illusion that something is being done?
Necessarily, the authors have been more conservative in their aims, but in exploring UNMIK's successes and failures, they have rendered a great service to those who must grapple with these problems. We can only hope that future Donald Rumsfelds will choose to listen, and be willing to learn.

Moscoe in Space.......2002-05-14
Mike Moscoe's "The Price of Peace" is set in a future that is not too far away. The pace is quick, the style is friendly, and the characterizations are believable. Whether it's peace or combat, the book is a page turner for the beach, plane ride, or nightstand. If you like Asimov and/or Clarke, Moscoe is the place to go.
The Price of Peace.......2000-08-21
Body>When Lieutenant Terrance "Trouble" Tordon looks at the space ship Patton and at its captain, he questions his good sense for the first time. Captain Izzy Umboto is obviously a loose cannon. He questions her sanity as well, for accepting the Patton, a bucket of bolts which appears to be on its last leg. Still, Trouble is committed to the Marine Corps, so he vows to do his best. Trouble is captured by the slave drivers who have enslaved farmers to work their crops of illicit drugs. On his first night of captivity, he meets a young woman Ruth who embodies everything he does not want, including love and commitment. Enduring torture and humiliation, Trouble and Ruth manage to retain their dignity and their belief that they will be rescued. Meanwhile, Captain Izzy is doing her best to do just that, rescue the men who depended on her. It comes down to a battle, not to win the war, but to maintain the peace, and to exact whatever price may be required. But can peace be worth human lives and dignity? Mike Moscoe's The Price of Peace is action-packed and exciting space adventure, but it's also a love story, an exploration of the lengths to which sentient beings will go to maintain power and to maintain dignity, and it's a peek into the human psyche. The Price of Peace satisfies on many levels, including just plain entertainment.
Getting it done.......2000-07-04
Moscoe presents a complex and gritty postwar reality where things have to get done with skill rather than brute force. It is a time when the tattered remnants of a former space navy are trying to cover too much territory with too few resources and making up the difference with courage and ingenuity. In the background is a high conspiracy of shadowy movers and shakers who think they can have a war anytime they need to stir up the economy, and may be powerful enough to do just that.
H. Beam Piper for the 2000's.......2000-06-21
Some compare Mr. Moscoe with current space-warfare authors but I believe his politics and character development harken back to the Fuzzy or Space Viking series by H. Beam Piper. As a military member I like the rah rah attitude of the space navy. It is good fun space opera and I look forward to the next book for the plane flight to Kuwait. I don't read this stuff to learn about physics.
David Drake has some competition.......2000-04-10
The Marines and crew of worn-out curiser under the command of a passed-over captain turn out to be better than anticipated by a sinister cartel. Gritty realism. Good characters.

Accurate background and depiction of the situation to 2003 .......2006-03-19
Randall Price is a believing Christian who is also a strong supporter of Zionism and Israel.
He , in my opinion, gets the whole story of the Middle East conflict in the right way.
This work however was published in 2003 and because of the rapidity of events, needs to be brought- up-to -date.
Its background information is excellent.
Excellent quick informative read........2004-08-05
This book does an excellent job of explaining a complex subject in a very small amount of space. It gives a detailed timeline of the "Problem in the Middle East." Its question and answer format makes it easy to read and easy to find information. However there is a noticable slant toward the Israeli side of the conflict.
Wordy and confusing.........2004-02-05
I was really disapointed with this overly detailed Mid. East Outline. Read, 'Christian Family Guide Explains The Middle East Conflict' it's MUCH better.
Encyclopedia of the Middle East.......2003-07-04
Ever been confused about the Middle East? Get confused about who was in charge on a particular year in history? Perplexed about how the names of cities and regions changed over time?
This is your book.
I have heard Randall Price in bible prophecy conferences. He is an outstanding archeologist and bible scholar and is uniquely qualified to put this book together.
There is so much disinformation about the Middle East. If you want to be mislead, follow CNN and the major media players. If you want a "Reader's Digest" version of the Middle East, this is your book. Dr. Price is devoutly supportive of Israel and its right to the land. (Genesis 15:18)
It is a skinny book but chock full of information. I have it on my shelf like an encyclopedia reference. Thank you, Dr. Price for your work. We look forward to your visit to the Twin Cities in September 2003 at a bible prophecy conference. God bless.
A Veritable 'Gold Mine' Of Information On The Middle East........2003-06-26
This is another excellent work by Randall Price which will be of enormous value and assistance to many in understanding the apparent complexities surrounding the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The Middle East conflict is analysed from it's very beginning, with most issues being resolved in a question and answer format, but at the same time providing a considerable amount of information.
The Palestinian `problem' is also examined with attention being given to the origin of the Palestinian `people' and who they actually are, the refugee issue, the involvement of the UN & the International community and how the Palestinians are funded.
Of particular note is that the Palestinian Authority is quoted as spending some ten million Euros per month to sponsor terrorist activities & to fund official hate propaganda in Palestinian schools (textbooks etc) and the official Palestinian media. This is revealed as being the same amount that the Palestinian Authority receives from the European Union.
Yasser Arafat himself is quoted as having personal holdings of some $1.3 BILLION. References are provided to substantiate these statements.
Special sections are devoted to the `intifadas' and how the conflict has been covered by the media.
All of the Arab-Israeli wars are covered in some detail, plus the subjects of Jerusalem, Islamic terrorism & the Iraqi conflict.
Important references are also included in relation to the so called `peace process', including the Camp David Accords, the Oslo Accords, UN Resolutions 242 etc., the Saudi `peace' plan and how/why these attempts to resolve the conflict have all failed. Both the Jewish and Arab claims to the Land are examined. Maps and charts are plentifully provided with many myths being dispelled and many facts confirmed.
One particularly interesting section describes how Yasser Arafat has used the media to promote the creation and dissemination of a revisionist `Palestinian history'. A process described here where the Palestinian Authority has used the press to gain International recognition as an `independent Arab nation', despite the fact that it has never officially existed as such. Nationalistic actions include the flying of a `Palestinian flag', the election of a `Palestinian President', the adoption of a constitution, declaration of independence, the proclamation of Jerusalem as the `capital of Palestine' and the reception of foreign diplomats at the Palestinian Authority HQ at the Orient House in Jerusalem.
The media's attentive reporting of such events helping to establish the perception that the Palestinian Authority is a `legitimate national entity' rather than just a political one. All of this receiving the attention without any media entity reporting that a `Palestinian national entity' has never existed at any time. A procedure which has been exploited within International circles amongst those who find it politically expedient in pursuing their own interests in the region.
Without such books as this many could be easily swept along by the media euphoria which can be distort the reality on the ground.
This book is a veritable `gold mine' of information on the Middle East and I highly recommend it to everyone. Randall Price's expertise on the Middle East is considerable. He has written many excellent books including `Jerusalem In Prophecy', `Unholy War' & `The Coming Last Days Temple'.

exceptional discussion of media intervention.......2003-07-31
Forging Peace focuses primarily on the problems of media management in conflict and post-conflict situations. More specifically it examines situations where Western democracies, the United Nations, the OSCE and even the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have attempted to transform the media sector in third party states. By examining the legal and political context of the new interest in media before, during, and after conflict, the contributors make current trends more visible and illuminate the relationship between speech and force in international affairs.
Together the contributors consider how international law is changing to encompass, reflect, and channel intervention practices. They each from various academic, legal and diplomatic perspectives look at `information intervention' through the lens of human rights principles, especially those relating to restrictions on hate speech and the right to receive and impart information. They examine the distinctions between State-authorized and rogue uses of media to incite conflict; between authorized and unauthorized incidents of information intervention; and between preventive intervention as opposed to that directed towards resolving conflict. And they test some of the justifications that are articulated for different forms of information intervention, actions that range from mere monitoring of broadcasts to the total reformulation of media laws, and ultimately the seizure or bombing of transmitters, and full-blown cyberwarfare.
Precise, Analytical, and Thoughtful.......2003-05-22
Monroe Price and Mark Thompson have assembled a fantastic array of scholars, thinkers, and lawyers who each bring to bear a unique perspective on the intractable relationship between media and conflict. From Alison DesForges's discussion about the impact of hate speech in Rwanda to former U.S. State Department official Jamie Metzl's discussion about United States actions in Somalia, Kosovo, and Serbia the book answers many interesting questions but raises many more. Of particular interest were Eric Blinderman's chapter which discussed the legal rules surrounding, what he terms "information intervention," and Stephanie Farrior's discussion about the legal principles related to hate speech.

Interesting background, average art.......1999-04-05
This comic collection provides good "canon" background for Jeff Sinclair's story, and meshes well with Book 9, "To Dream in the City of Sorrows." I recommend it for any serious B5 fan. However, the artwork sometimes was lacking. (Garibaldi is the exception, as he was consistently well-drawn.) For some reason, Neroon was recognizable in only his first two frames -- after that he was completely different. At any rate, "The Price of Peace" storyline was interesting and engaging, and the characters were believable. The added bonus of the Psi Corps comic at the end is a hoot!
Like an episode of B5 that you missed... very well done.......1999-01-27
After I got done reading the primary story (4 out of the first 5 chapters), I felt like I'd seen an episode that never got aired. I have to admit in a lot of ways that I (almost) liked Sinclair more than Sheridan... this collection and the novel "To Dream in the City of Sorrows" fill in more than a few gaps. The first chapter is the best, written by JMS and beautifully-illustrated, but it's all good. The characterization is right-on, too, something I've heard hasn't been a strong point of the B5 novels, excepting "To Dream" and "Dark Genesis." The Psi Corps chapter complements the latter novel well, too. I look forward to more B5 comics (and novels, especially the Centauri Prime Trilogy!) -- the show's over, but the fat lady hasn't sung just yet.
If you missed the comics, pick this up!.......1999-01-03
This is a bundle of the first four comics and the 11th comic. It takes place during the second season; and for those who may not know, these comics are much like the show. While each is an individual story, they all pull together to tell a 'big' story as well. If you like the show and you like the characters, you'll like this too.
Great story for B5 fans.......1998-12-03
This is an incredible books. We finally get to see Sinclair's reaction to being ( officially ) told what really happened at the Battle of the Line and his reaction to seeing Delenn after her emergance from the Chrysalis. There is also a section about Psi Corp...but its mostly all propanda. The Price of Peace filled in some missing holes in Dark Genesis and To Dream in the City of Sorrows. The artwork is incredible, especially concerning Sinclair and Talia's expressions. I highly recommend this.
Product Description
Peace-at-any-price people are polite, generous, passive beings who- Value peace above all else. Try to avoid arguments, disagreements and fights. Fear anger. Have a history of childhood abuse, abandonment or neglect. Put other peoples wants and needs ahead of their own. Silently dislike aggressive people. Do not like to ask for what they want. Attract aggressive partners. Stuff their feelings. Avoid making decisions that affect others (i.e., choose movies, restaurants, etc.) But walking on eggshells, giving in and swallowing feelings do not give them the peace they so desperately crave. Instead, they lead chaotic, hectic, hellish lives. Their eager-to-please personalities are the underlying cause of their need to under or over eat, to abuse alcohol and drugs, and to find other ways to run from life. Deborah Day Poor, a counselor and former peace-at-any-price person, describes how she found the root of her placating personality in her family tree, tied to a crime committed against her great grandmother a crime that affected five generations. She reveals her own experiences and acquired strengths, as well as those of others who have successfully overcome the please disease. They candidly and courageously share their painful pasts, what they did to mend their wounded hearts, and how they finally found true inner peace.

Insightful Reading.......2006-05-28
Say hello to yourself and other pleasers you know through this book filled with insights. Pleasing others is not necessarily a bad thing unless the price is sacrifice of self. Learn how to avoid the pitfalls of too much pleasing, how that phenomena is shaped by past experiences, and how to form relationships that are more satisfying. The author is adept at presenting personal experiences and the experiences of those with whom she has worked to illustrate the down side of pleasing and how changing behavior can result in a more fulfilling life. I highly recommend this book as a mechanism for developing insight and making necessary changes. Dr. Dianne Garner
MUST READ!.......2005-09-24
With this wonderful book, it will help you learn how to move forward, despite the fear you have or have been living. One thing that I have learned is that if you were NOT moving out of your old (perhaps unhappy) comfort zone, you would not be feeling fear, and facing the fear you have been living!
I love this book. It is empowering, easy to read, apply and understand, and will make a wonderful difference in your life.It will help you take positive steps that move your life in the most positive direction possible.
Product Description
History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
