Book Description

COP: “Buddy, I think this is a whorehouse.”

BUDDY CIANCI: “Now I know why they made you a detective.”

Welcome to Providence, Rhode Island, where corruption is entertainment and Mayor Buddy Cianci presided over the longest-running lounge act in American politics. In The Prince of Providence, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Mike Stanton tells a classic story of wiseguys, feds, and politicians on a carousel of crime and redemption.

Buddy Cianci was part urban visionary, part Tony Soprano—a flawed political genius in the mold of Huey Long and James Michael Curley. His lust for power cost him his marriage, his family, and close friendships. Yet he also revitalized the city of Providence, where ethnic factions jostle with old-moneyed New Englanders and black-clad artists from the Rhode Island School of Design rub shoulders with scam artists from City Hall.

For nearly a quarter of a century, Cianci dominated this uneasy melting pot. During his first administration, twenty-two political insiders were convicted of corruption. In 1984, Cianci resigned after pleading guilty to felony assault, for torturing a man he suspected of sleeping with his estranged wife. In 1990, in a remarkable comeback, Cianci was elected mayor once again; he went on to win national acclaim for transforming a dying industrial city into a trendy arts and tourism mecca.

But in 2001, a federal corruption probe dubbed Operation Plunder Dome threatened to bring the curtain down on Cianci once and for all.

Mike Stanton takes readers on a remarkable journey through the underside of city life, into the bizarre world of the mayor and his supporting cast, including:

• “Buckles” Melise, the city official in charge of vermin control, who bought Providence twice as much rat poison as the city of Cleveland, which was at the time four times as large, and wound up increasing Providence’s rat population. During a garbage strike, Buckles sledgehammered one city employee and stuck his thumb in another’s eye. Cianci would later describe this as “great public policy.”

• Anthony “the Saint” St. Laurent, a major Rhode Island bookmaker and loan shark, who tried to avoid prison by citing his medical need for forty bowel irrigations a day, thus earning himself the nickname “Public Enema Number One.”

• Dennis Aiken, a celebrated FBI agent and public corruption expert, who asked to be sent to “the Louisiana of the North,” where he enlisted an undercover businessman to expose the corrupt secrets of Cianci’s City Hall.

The Prince of Providence is a colorful and engrossing account of one of the most tragicomic figures in modern American life—and the city he transformed.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rhode Island.......2006-06-28

RI is such a secular little world where everyone DOES know everyone else. Buddy played those connections to the hilt, rebuilding a city and lining his own pockets at the same time. This is a great study of a guy who, had he not been so affable, would have been regarded as the nastiest of crooks. But instead while he wallows in the Federal Pen, his legions of fans and supporters remain steadfast. Stanton does a superb job of capturing the uniqueness of Rhode Island; the Italianness, the corruption, the general air of "fuhgheddaboudit, they're all crooks". Don't rule out Buddy Part III, this is but the first installment of a very interesting man.

4 out of 5 stars The Jekyll and Hyde Mayor.......2005-11-19

I know very little about New England or Rhode Island. I'm not terribly interested in politics. I came to this book in a roundabout way. I had never been aware of Buddy Cianci until I happened to see a musical at the New York International Fringe Theatre Festival in 2003 titled BUDDY CIANCI. While the musical wasn't very good, I thought the story was fascinating and that in Buddy Cianci the authors certainly had a character who was big enough to sing. Here was a guy who was a scary crook that everyone loved. Here was a mayor whose popularity was never higher than just after he was indicted a second time. He had been indicted previously, pleaded guilty to assault (he bound and tortured a man he claimed was his ex-wife's lover) and had to step down as mayor, only to run again and be re-elected! So of course I pounced when I saw this book in the bookstore. I was not disappointed. Mike Stanton's THE PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE is jaw-dropping reading as it traces Cianci's rise to power and his outrageous machinations to keep his power. Stanton's book is very detailed and objective. This is not a hatchet job. He gives equal time to all sides. In one chapter I would be rooting for Buddy and in the following chapter rooting for his enemies. This is that kind of book. Buddy Cianci is that kind of guy. The book has been sold to the movies and should make a terrific film. (But what actor could possibly do justice to the title character?) There are times when the book seems on the verge of becoming a Yankee MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL (which I consider a compliment). THE PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE is consistently entertaining and has a lot to say about America and the times we live in. Four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2005-09-04

A fascinating view of a Mayor who engaged in boosterism to sell his city, and himself. Very helpful to those interested in studying styles of government and a great read.

5 out of 5 stars A renaissance man .......2005-05-21

This book is a fascinating look at politics, corruption and the enigma of Buddy Cianci. Thoughtful and balanced, it shows both sides of a bright, funny, and charismatic mayor whose impact reaches beyond his city. It's all about good and evil in the same person. Charm, power, and political realities. A great read.

5 out of 5 stars We miss Buddy!.......2005-03-18

Well, perhaps not everyone does. But as this book outlines in great detail, Buddy was quite a character. He was the huge push (or battering ram?) behind the proverbial renaissance of Providence. PVD has a long way to go, but some would argue that it is definitely better off after Buddy's term in office. Besides, how many cities have had a convicted felon with his own marinara sauce in City Hall? Stanton has written a meticulously researched and engaging book about one of the most interesting mayors to come along in quite a while. Whether you're from Providence or just passing through (ahem college kids), pick this one up and learn about the man behind the myth.

Book Description

Possessed: The Rise and Fall of Prince is the definitive biography of one of the most talented and enigmatic musicians of our time, a figure who has seized international attention for decades and will continue to do so, both for his artistic talent and his bizarre behavior. While a handful of quasi-biographical efforts have been undertaken on Prince, Possessed is the first full-length, full-scale biographical treatment. Drawing on sources unavailable to other authors, it is the first book to fully analyze the creative legacy and unveil the psychology of this tortured, messianic artist whose ceaseless reinventions have at times rendered him a profoundly original artist and at other threatened to make a mockery of himself and his music. Blending biographical storytelling, pop cultural history, and music scholarship, the book will appeal to a broad general audience as well as to music fans.

Author Alex Hahn, a journalist who has written for The Boston Globe and The San Francisco Chronicle, taps key sources - such as friends, employees, and industry insiders - to place readers at the scene of some of the artist's most important recording and song writing sessions; relate how his compulsive sexual behavior led to revolving-door romances with Kim Basinger, Carmen Elektra, Vanity, and others; reveal that Prince on many occasions plagiarized band members' musical ideas; and explain why he has become such a paranoid, vindictive, and isolated figure. The book also draws upon the hundreds of interviews given by Prince over his career.

The book contain 30 high-quality photographs of Prince and his associates from all points of his career.

Possessed also contains the most detailed appendix of song and recording session information ever assembled for a pop musician, including information about Prince's vast canon of unreleased music and the hundreds of songs he has written for other pop artis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential Prince.......2005-09-08

A comprehensive overview of the life of one of the greatest musical minds of the pop world. Hahn shows how Prince went from prodigy to pop star to pompous recluse. Starting with his early years right up to the the new millenium, we see how Prince's flame shined so brightly after years of hard work, only to have it snuffed by ego, selfishness and totalitarianism. Plenty of great research by Hahn, who gets his info straight from those close to the Purple One, including band members, engineers, A&R people and tour manager Alan Leeds who also worked for funk godfathers James Brown and George Clinton. Excellent and complete discography including unreleased material. A must for any fan of His Royal Badness!

My only complaint is that Hahn seems biased in favor of the successful Revolution/Purple period and very critical of the later New Power Generation band. Though the lite pop of the Revolution era was the highlight of Prince's career, the musically superior NPG yielded much greatness although its R&B/rap/funk seemed less accessible to mainstream audiences. In fact, it was Prince's increased musical output and each album's lack of contiuity (jumping to different musical styles like jazz, techno, reggae, r&b, rock opera, etc) that contributed his downfall. In the end, it seemed Prince lost his focus and idealism and needed to find purpose again to regain his throne.

4 out of 5 stars Stand Back.......2005-04-13

Hahn's book is good but, as some of the other reviewers mention, it is written too much on a schematic of pre-1988 = good, after 1988 = bad. Prince has been humbled, I suppose, and now he plays his greatest hits like clockwork and has attained a semblance of his former fan base. But on the whole his career has been too complicated to fit into the traditional "rise and fall" motif.

Hahn does name names and he's pretty harsh on our boy Prince, who comes off sounding like he's trapped in his own world, unable to break out and see what's real. He is haughty, weird, and troubled. But Hahn is also genuinely interested in the music, and in seeing who did what in the various incarnations of Prince's collaborators.

Prince is a sparkplug of energy with a fantastic melodic line and a master of r'n'b. I love the story of Prince helping out Stevie Nicks during the writing of "Stand Back" one of her signature tracks from the 1980s. It's a shame nothing from his sessions with Kylie Minogue ever saw the light of day; but Hahn holds out a ray of hope that someday, way down the pike, we will hear everything because Prince is a sort of packrat when it comes to holding onto the all precious tapes (obsessively, like Howard Hughes holding onto his fingernail clippings).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2005-01-04

As another reviewer wrote, if you don't want to see anything negative written about Prince, don't read this book. But again, if you don't pick up and read this well researched and written work, you will truly deprive yourself and miss out on something great. Furthermore, if you really love Prince, you will accept his rough behind the scenes side as well as his stage image. Sure, we want to see our idols as flawless, but realistically, that is not the case. The book takes you on a fantastic journey of highs and lows throughout the artist's personal and business relationships, financial hardships, and his creative triumphs and failures.

There were times during my reading of the book that I actually despised him for his treatment of others, especially those who really cared about and stood by him, but then again, that's his personality, and who am I or anyone else to judge? The scary thing is, I see a lot of myself in him, not musically, but personality wise. I really felt bad after reading about how he lost his child. In fact, that was the most heartbreaking part of the book to me. After finishing the book, I watched "Purple Rain" again for the umpteenth time , and it is strange how my perspective of the film was altered by the bio.

Some of the content will be shocking and downwright offensive, and upon completion of the book, you will either love Prince or hate him. Either way, the fact remains that Prince, no matter what his faults or weaknesses are, is one of the best artistic geniuses of our time and has left a permanent footprint on pop culture. Even his worst detractors give him credit for his abilities. Frankly, I couldn't imagine what life would be like without his music. I now have a newfound respect for Prince, in the sense that he is as human as the rest of us. Get this!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2004-10-01

Not too bad.

Now it all makes sense about Prince to me.
You give someone enough power and reign, don't think that they will give it up so easily. (I'm talking about the music making)
He did it ALL, and wanted ALL the credit and control.
Even though I'm sure his former band*Slaves contribute in assisting with the new music, but he didn't give credit were I believe credit was due to them.
Good-not great book. But it answered some unanswered questions, and I believe they were the most accurate taking account from those who worked and dealt with Prince and both a professional and personal level

4 out of 5 stars The Early Days.......2004-05-14

After reading original guitarist, Dez Dickerson's newly released book, "My Time With Prince", I was thankful for real first-hand observations and insights into the Purple One's beginning. Without the agenda set forth in "Possessed", Dez shares about the youthful, innocent, and extraordinary path that Prince and bandmates experienced. Legend has it that Dez is the only band member who was not required to sign a confidentiality agreement, allowing him to finally come forth with this rare up-close biography. Very interesting comparison reading.

Book Description

Stay Happily Married! And they lived happily ever after. Most young couples enter marriage with high hopes and aspirations. But reality says differently--and "mature" married couples will be the first to admit it. Prince Charming may be good-looking, especially in those cute tights, but he also snores, picks his teeth, and has a hundred other annoying habits. And, if Cinderella is perfectly honest, she's not so perfect herself. As the authors remind us, "Falling in love is easy, getting married perhaps even easier, but staying happily married is much more difficult."

In this book a husband and wife on the horizon of the twenty-first century will learn ways to:

Deal successfully with the frustrations and disappointments of marriage Overcome the temptations to give up when the going gets tough Stay committed and contented as a couple

With hope, humor, and wisdom, Jerry and Judy Schreur analyze problems and offer helpful, Bible-based solutions. When Prince Charming Falls Off His Horse is the culmination of thirty-three years of marriage and twenty-five years of counseling--it's honest, unflinchingly realistic, but most of all a loving celebration of married life.

Book Description

Photographer Bill Burke has taken annual trips to Indochina ever since he first traveled to Asia in 1982. Although he usually photographed the people, Burke became aware of how the architecture absorbed as much as reflected the region's history. Transfixed by buildings like the municipal offices built by the French in the 1860s, the vaulted railroad stations and post offices of the 1930s, and the art-deco fantasy cinemas of the 1960s, Burke saw the region as an architectural museum, rotting in the humidity and untouched by economic ambition, and began to trace the cultural changes in the area through its architecture. In Autrefois, Maison Privee - the title means "once a private house," and refers to prevalent reappropriation of once private houses for municipal and government uses - Burke captures the dramatic history of the area, from the influence of French colonialism through the rise of communism and the devastating effects of the Vietnam War, to the repopulation of Cambodia after the fall of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rough and the opening of the area to capitalism. Burke's first entree into Indochina occurred during the period of Soviet control, a period of recovery that allowed for the the current explosion of capitalism, which has already begun to devaste an architectural heritage that was well preserved in the deep freez of socialism. What the B-52s and tank didn't destroy during the decades of war, developers from neighboring countries are busily replacing

5 out of 5 stars The Best Photo Book I've seen in years!.......2004-08-04

Wow! A photographer friend called me up from New York City on a Saturday night to tell me about this book. He said it was so good it made him "want to be a photographer again." After he rang off I went on-line and ordered a copy from Amazon. A week later I got it and my spirit was renewed, too.

There's no mistaking this for anything but a Bill Burke book. The hand written captions on the photos, the unique design that serves to enhance the photos, not some designer's ego and the immediacy of the image that puts the reader right there when the photo was made, all of Burke's trademark elements are here. The stunning four color black and white reproductions were made from scans of the black and white enlargements Burke made from his black and white Polaroid negatives. The photos are reproduced in warm tones with creamy whites so that many of them resemble 19th Century albumen prints by Baldus or the Bonfils.

While no one but Burke could have made these photos, at times he seems to be channelling the spirits of Atget, Evans and Sander. The second photo in the book of the "man with pigs" took my breath away. If August Sander had left the Westerwald for Cambodia he might have made this photo of a farmer taking pigs to market on his bicycle in a basket that looks like something out of "How to Wrap Five Eggs". The pig farmer looks out at the photographer from under the brim of his hat with a stoicism that bespeaks his acceptence of a hard life in the hot sun of southeast Asia and his quiet pride in being chosen to have his portrait made (Burke often gives his subjects the orginal 3 x 4 inch Polaroid photo, keeping the negative to make larger prints when he returns home).

There are many other photographs in "Autrefois..." besides the portraits. The architectural photos often show clasic old buildings with a barnacle like covering of late 20th Century design elements and advertising, other bear the legend, "demolished" or are shown before and after style with a superficial changes like a coat of modern window walls. The "Hanoi Hilton" is shown in 1995 unchanged since its days as a POW camp and in 1998 with the modern Singapore Hotel rising inside the former prison walls.

I would recommend this book to lovers of fine photography, Viet Nam vets, architecture buffs and any library in a community with a southeast Asian population.

The book itself is a pleasure to hold, large, beautifully printed on heavy stock, sturdilly bound, even the panoramas aren't lost in the gutters between the pages. And it's a bargain at twice the price! Buy it today before it sells out.

2 out of 5 stars Second Book a Major Let Down.......2006-05-19

The first book, Hall of the Mountain King, is worth the read. Vadin and Mirain are interesting, compelling characters with a good, solid dynamic that is interesting and engaging to read, if not exactly the most original thing ever written. Mirain claims to be the son of the dead heir of the Kingdom of Ianon and the sun god Avaryan, giving him the right to the throne. Vadin is pressed into his service by the king, completely unwilling. There's a lot to be said for Mirain's struggle for the throne, his growing relationship with Vadin, and Vadin's just a good, fun narrator. Not Book of the Year, but a solid read.

Then we got to The Lady of Han-Gilen. I suppose this 'Lady' thing should have been a hint. Vadin is no longer the narrator - in fact, he's out of the book completely before it's halfway over. Five pages into the new character Elian and her narrative, I was quite sick of her. Beautiful Princess, Talented Warrior, Perfect Lady! Is there anything she can't do? Hall of the Mountain King did not set me up for a painfully traditional, by the book romance. Vadin and Mirain's enthralling, bittersweet dynamic? Gone, to be replaced by the Red Headed Wonder. And you will hear about how very red headed she is, poetically and every other page. The biggest trial Elian seems to face is that she's torn between two soon to be emperors who love her madly. Never fear, though, she gets to chop off her hair and disguise herself as a boy so she can join her One True Love's army.

Elian is infuriatingly perfect; traits previously reserved for Mirain - who is the son of a god, I remind you - are snatched up. Anything anyone else can do, Elian can do better. And let's not forget her beautiful red hair, which should be a character in its own right. By the second chapter, I could have told you how the book was going to end, because there's very few places books like this go. A bad narrator and a simple plot make for a tedious, dull story.

I'm not looking forward to the third book anymore.

4 out of 5 stars not your cookie-cutter fantasy novel.......2004-09-17

Avaryan Rising combines the first three novels of Judith Tarr's series (The Hall of the Mountain King, The Lady of Han-Gilen, and A Fall of Princes). Having had no previous experience with the author, I picked up this book on an impulse in the book store. I'm glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised.

In my opinion, Tarr's strongest point by far is her skill in character creation and development. Anyone who reads a lot of fantasy at some point tends to become a little bored with the same cookie-cutter characters that appear to dominate much of this genre. Tarr offers a refreshing alternative. Her characters are unique, fascinating, and extremely well developed. Already on the first page of "The Hall of the Mountain King", I was drawn to the powerful (if somewhat tragic) figure of the old king, who stands on the top of his battlements day after day, in sun, wind, rain, and snow, keeping watch for his beloved daughter. The characters that follow are similarly fascinating, haunting, tragic, powerful, and seemingly real. Examples: Mirain, the young son of a mortal and a God, who sets out to conquer what he claims is by right his Kingdom and Empire. At the beginning of the book, Mirain is only 15 years old, but his description as someone who commands the love and respect of his people seems very believable to me, as Tarr immediately sets him apart from other young men his age, due to his heritage (which is gift and burden at the same time ... something that Tarr explores in much detail and very well). Vadin, his squire, who is initially so overcome with his hate for Mirain that he proposes a wager that would forfeit his soul, should he ever feel any friendship for his new master. The list goes on, and each new character is as unique as the first.

The plot is overall very character-driven (as opposed to action-driven). If you read this expecting fast-paced chapters with lots of action sequences, you will probably wind up being disappointed. Although there is certainly a good amount of action in this book, Tarr seems more interested in showing the inner turmoil of her characters as well as the developing relationships between them. She does it exceedingly well!

Probably the only 'problem' I have with this book lies in Tarr's writing style. Overall her prose is beautiful and a pleasure to read. Every now and then, however, the writing becomes "experimental" (for lack of a better word), with sentence fragments and unexpected shifts between subjects. I found myself having to re-read sentences at times in order to keep up with the plot. I do get the feeling that these sequences are very much intended, but they did not quite work for me. Having said that, I don't think it takes away from the overall experience of the book.

In conclusion, I would certainly recommend this book as a refreshing alternative for any compulsive fantasy reader, although it is not up there with my personal favorites. That, however, is a matter of personal preference above anything else, so don't lend too much weight to it.

    Best,

2 out of 5 stars Average Fantasy Fare. Yawn........2001-02-23

I read The Hall of the Mountain King back in 1988, and I jotted down my impressions of the novel at that time. The male characters in this novel were very effeminate, and I don't think that's what the author intended. Rather, I got the impression that the author just wasn't skilled in showing how males express deep friendships toward each other.

The plot concerns a youth who's the scion of a sun god. He comes to accept his inheritance of his grandfather's kingdom, but first he has to defeat his uncle. The boy has mind control powers and is a quick swordsman, so he kicks butt through most of the book. However, halfway through the book we find out he's only 15 years old! Suspension of disbelief is shattered at that point.

Save your money. This isn't worth reading.

    5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......2000-06-23

Before this, I've never read any of Judith Tarr's work, but after reading this trilogy, you can be sure that I will be searching for everything she's ever written! At certain points in the story, I found myself breathless. The characters were very well developed and believable. The tapestry of magic, romance, power and sacrifice that Ms. Tarr weaves is complex and beautiful. This is a definite "must read."

    5 out of 5 stars A great read.......1999-04-01

I could rave but it'd be pointless, my opinion of this book could not be expressed in less than several pages; Tarr has unsurpassed talent in this area, READ IT.

2 out of 5 stars Gripping for 1/2 of it, falls flat at end.......2004-11-30

I had read the first two novels in this series, so I was pretty psyched to read this one. The book is strong in the beginning, and the intense relationship between Hirel (an emperor's son) and Prince Sarevan is enough to carry it through quite well until the halfway mark, where the author descends into a jumbled mix of convoluted reasoning and ill-conceived plot moves that destroys the whole thing. I won't tell you how it ends or how Judith Tarr resolves the stated "impossible" problem of her two very MALE princes falling in love, but I will say this; I nearly ripped the book in half when I realized the path she was taking. What an utter cop out.

      3 out of 5 stars It's actually 2.5 stars but I can't find the .5 button.......2003-10-29

For three quarters of the book, I was really enjoying it. So much so, I was going to rate it 4 stars, if not 5. But then the author chose the easy way out of the major problem her two main characters faced - it was such a cop-out, it ruined the rest of the book. I almost stopped reading right there, but decided to finish it since I was almost done. It really is disappointing. What made it even worse was the reactions of the characters to the solution. Suspension of belief only goes so far, even in fantasy novels. It was such a life altering solution, they way the characters reacted to it before it was implemented, during, and after (especially after) was just not believable. It was quite ridiculous actually. I would tell you what the author did, but if I had to go through that annoyance, so do you!

5 out of 5 stars well worth the read.......2001-03-11

This beautifully-produced historical account of the tobacco industry in the Pee Dee region of SC stayed in the pile of books on my bedside table for about a month before it finally cycled to the top. Having received the book as a present, I was mildly curious when I picked it up. "OK," I thought, as I began what I believed would be, at best, a cursory examination, "it's a history book." What a pleasant surprise I received! I was immediately drawn in to the story by the eloquent writing style of the authors and the appropriate use of southern expressions. I felt as if I was experiencing the frustration and the joy of the tobacco farmers as they labored to bring in the crop in this unique region of the country. I found each of the illustrations in the book to be clearly presented and to closely fit the part of the story being told. Within a short period of time after beginning my reading, I began going to bed early to allow myself more reading time. Since I only adopt that reading behavior for the page-turners, I knew then I was hooked! My interest continued right on through the cogent explanation of the structure of the tobacco-subsidy system and finally to the conclusion and the insightful comments of the authors regarding the future of the tobacco industry. I wish to thank Prince & Simpson for their intelligent coverage of a complex part of American culture. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in real southern culture, and not that fake, hick Hollywood version so often portrayed in movies, and for anyone interested in really knowing what the tobacco industry is about.
