Book Description
Collaborative Brain Injury Intervention: Positive Everyday Routines illustrates collaboration and thereby integration in several important ways. The authors succeed in integrating different perspectives into a coherent view of the nature of the problem and the approach to treatment. They suggest a collaborative treatment that helps unify the work of different disciplines and services over time in the service of the client's real-world needs. They also provide the possibility of an integrated approach to treating a broad range of problems.

A truly collaborative approach to brain injury rehab.......2007-02-27
When we were organizing a community reentry program for adults with brain injury eight years ago, this book became our bible. Based on rich research in the area of positive behavioral supports for students with behavioral challenges, and focused primarily on the brain injury community, the book provides an organized and well-reasoned approach to working with individuals and families coping with cognitive-behavioral issues. I especially love their important lessons that all behaviors are efforts at communication, that "setting events" may be adapted to help people avoid harmful behaviors rather than punish them after they occur, and their believe in working within communities rather than clinical settings. All brain injury therapists should read this book and consider its implications for practice.
This one is a gotta have.......2004-12-20
For parents of learning disabled kids and adolescents in particular, . this book sheds new insight on how to help them help themselves. I have read dozens of books on learning disabilities and this one is the most practical, most accurate and most informative of any of them.
Book Description
"The fascinating tale of an extraordinary black man's involvement, growth, and final recognition in a white man's world of surgical research and medical practice . . . at the same time, an insightful firsthand account of the genesis of some of the pioneering research into the nature of shock and some of the early procedures in cardiovascular surgery." --Journal of the History of Medicine Visitors to the Blalock Building at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center are greeted by portraits of two great men. One, of renowned heart surgeon Alfred Blalock, speaks for itself. The other, of highschool graduate Vivien Thomas, is testimony to the incredible genius and determination of the first black man to hold a professional position at one of America's premier medical institutions. Partners of the Heart is Thomas's extraordinary autobiography. Trained in laboratory techniques by Alfred Blalock and Joseph W. Beard, Thomas remained Blalock's principal technician and laboratory chief for the rest of Blalock's distinguished career. Thomas very rapidly learned to perform surgery, to do chemical determinations, and to carry out physiologic studies. He became a phenomenal technician and was able to carry out complicated experimental cardiac operations totally unassisted and to devise new ones.

Vivien Thomas.......2007-08-12
Book arrived quickly and in good shape. The book contains many highly technical surgical passages which do not lend themselves to easy reading. Unless you have a medical background these passages can be overwhelming. Most readers will probably end up skipping these passages which comprise a large portion of the book.
neverf ordered this product.......2007-05-30
I never ordered this product, could you send me info if you have me as purchawsing this item. thanks
Partners of the Heart.......2007-03-23
Very interesting to follow the challenges and choices that Mr. Thomas makes throughout his remarkable career. A bit of a distracted read if you do not have the technical background to understand many of the technical procedures that he used and helped to develop, but still a fascinating story.
Good book.......2007-01-17
Excellent autobiography of a relatively unknown giant of medicine who helped pioneer heart surgery. I bought this for my 12 year old child for a history project, and the text was way over her head, but it would be a good story for any high schooler who was interested in going into medicine.
If you've seen the movie, now read the book.......2006-03-21
In this book you will hear from Vivien Thomas himself. As wonderful as the movie was, it did take some dramatic license here and there. Vivien tells the story of the first "blue baby" operation very matter of factly. As you read the book you will discover that he played things pretty close to the vest. He was not one for dramatic outbursts or fits of temper. Thomas is a dignified quite man and his relation with Dr. Blalock was not all sweetness and light but they worked well togehter and became very close.
There is a lot of medical talk in the book. The squeemish may have trouble getting through the accounts of the experiments that were performed on the dogs. Don't let that stop you from reading this book. It gives you a wonderful insight into this modest, unassuming but brilliant doctor. He never went to medical school but taught some of the finset surgeons in the world how to operate. Happily, Thomas was finally given an honorary doctorate by Johns Hopkins.
If you have seen the movie, don't expect this book to play out the same way. This is real life.
Enjoy!

GREAT!!.......2007-08-29
A very eye opening book for those that truly care about your pets. If more people would read this there would be alot less pets going to the vet every month for allergies, etc..
A MUST READ!!!!
A Shock To My Senses!!!.......2007-03-12
I was able to get my hands on Ms. O'Driscolls other book which is out of print now,"What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines" and I found it admirable she openly admits in this book she doesn't blame vaccinations only for the illness of her pets. She now is factoring in other possibilities. "Shock To The System" is full of information but I did not find it an easy read. I have read many many books on this topic and consider myself well informed. However it was hard to break down this book in layman's terms for easy understanding and comprehension. I did "get it" but I had to re read many topics over again. I do like that she factors in other reasons as to why our pets are dying horrible deaths at such young ages! Such as pet foods, stress and genetics. I'm a firm believer that vaccines are harmful to our pets and any responsible pet owner really needs to research this before handing over their pet to a veterinarian to decide what is best for them. Ms. O'Driscoll does point this out. Maybe your vet doesn't have your pets best interest at heart but rather their pocketbook !! The more I read the more I understand this. This is a good book to have but please do not stop with it. Protect your pet and read on!!!
Are we over vaccinating our pets? Yes!.......2006-05-03
Catherine goes into details with research from vets on the effects of vaccinations on our pets. Do they need annual vaccinations or are they causing our pets to become ill? Are vaccinations a moneymaker? Yes, pets should be examined yearly to insure good health, but vaccinations should not be the reason for this yearly health check. Catherine also encourages the reader to do more research on their own.
Catherine talks about food and stress and their effect on your animal's health. Catherine used to feed exclusively a raw diet, but has since modified that stance to allow that it can be too much 'energy' for some animals and that a cooked or prepared diet may be more appropriate. Rare for those who have made the conversion to admit that it may not be the 'best' for all dogs.
Shock to the System will make you think - not a bad thing!
I'm looking forward to her visit in May 2006 on CSDogBookReview and learning more from her.
Strongly recommended reading to all pet owners .......2006-04-03
Catherine O'Driscoll presents Shock To The System: The Facts About Animal Vaccination, Pet Food And How To Keep Your Pets Healthy as an informed and informative study of the truths of stress and vaccinations and how such things may actually be the cause of illness in our pets. Readers will be enlightened as Shock To The System is one of the greatest analysis of modern realizations in pertinence to animal health. Shock To The System is very strongly recommended reading to all pet owners for its informational and "user friendly" information on all the elements of basic pet care.

Systems of Conservation Laws 2: Geometric Structures, Oscillations, and Initial-Boundary Value Problems
ASIN: 0521582334 |
Book Description
Systems of conservation laws arise naturally in physics and chemistry. To understand them and their consequences (shock waves, finite velocity wave propagation) properly in mathematical terms requires, however, knowledge of a broad range of topics. This book sets up the foundations of the modern theory of conservation laws describing the physical models and mathematical methods, leading to the Glimm scheme. Building on this the author then takes the reader to the current state of knowledge in the subject. The maximum principle is considered from the viewpoint of numerical schemes and also in terms of viscous approximation. Small waves are studied using geometrical optics methods. Finally, the initial-boundary problem is considered in depth. Throughout, the presentation is reasonably self contained, with large numbers of exercises and full discussion of all the ideas. This makes it an ideal text for graduate courses in the area of partial differential equations.
Book Description
Chapters are grouped according to subject matter. The first group discusses theory; the second considers instrumentation and measurements, and procedures for analyzing and testing systems subjected to shock and vibration. Vibration that is induced by ground motion and fluid flow is considered next; then methods of controlling shock and vibration; followed by chapters on packaging engineering to prevent equipment from being damaged in transit; on the theory and practice of equipment design; and on the effects of shock and vibration on humans. New material includes computer techniques for solving problems, new instrumentation based on microchip technology, advances in analysis of data and models, application of finite element methods, and test criteria and specifications.

I've profit their examples in my job. I think that the authors must use the IS. In non anglo countries is common used IS. I think that if there were more theory it were a better handbook.

Book Description
Classification of fractures and soft tissue injuries is an essential aid in the diagnosis and management of injuries, the assessment of outcomes and in clinical research. When many systems are available for a particular injury, this can cause confusion and controversy over management. In this invaluable book the three editors provide a comprehensive review of all of the known musculoskeletal trauma classification systems in a single volume. A team of contributors has sought out original versions of classification systems wherever possible, and these have been presented in chapters according to the site of injury.

Donald Strachey is asked to investigate the suspicious death of Paul Haig by three different people-Haig's homophobic mother, his ex-lover, and the psychiatrist hired to "cure" him of his homosexuality. Just as he gets started, however, all three remove him from the case, leaving Strachey with a brutal murderer that now everyone wants left alone.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, Complex Characters.......2007-07-03
Everybody seems to want to hire Don to investigate the death of Paul Haig, including his boozy mother, Phyllis, his lover, Larry Bierly, and Dr. Vernon Crockwell, who tried to "cure" both Paul and Larry of their homosexuality.
This one, too, kept me in the dark until the final resolution. My favorite quote, Don speaking of Timmy: "It was hell loving a man who got all his values from dead white European males, but to have done such was my complex destiny."
That sums up what I love about this series-- Don and Timmy are such real, interesting, complex characters.

Strachey Returns.......2007-04-09
Stevenson, Richard. "Shock to the System", The Haworth Press, 2007.
Strachey Returns
Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
Our gay private eye is back and if not as good as before, he is even better. "Shock to the System" deals with whether a man's death was actually suicide or murder and the read is very wicked fun.
Three different people ask Strachey to prove that the recent suicide by a gay man was not suicide at all but that he was murdered. The three want the person caught and convicted of murder and as Strachey begins to unravel the mystery, the reader is glued to his seat reading and guessing while being entertained completely.
The police label the death of Paul Haig as a suicide. He supposedly overdosed on liquor mixed with prescription drugs. Haig's mother, however, believes that he was murdered and that the man who committed the crime was her dead son's lover. On the other hand, the lover insists that it was indeed murder that ended his lover's life and that the murderer was actually a psychiatrist whose practice was changing homosexuals to heterosexuals. The doctor, of course, insists that he did not commit the crime (he has no alibi) and is very interested in knowing who did the deed.
Leave it to our man Strachey to solve the mystery and as he does so the reader has a lot of fun following the plot through its twists and turns. The real fun starts when Strachey discovers that there is a common link between Haig's mother, Haig's lover, and Haig's psychiatrist. We soon see that the doctor and the mother harbor great hatred for homosexuals but is that enough to make either of them cold-blooded killers?
Again, Stevenson writes a strong social commentary while providing his reader with some real fun. I have never been a real mystery fan but I am slowly becoming one by reading the Donald Strachey Mysteries. Not only do they give us stories filled with suspense, they allow us to have a good hard look at the world I which we live. That in itself is no easy job and Stevenson does t beautifully. I can't wait to read the entire series.
Fun Read for the Gay Man.......2005-09-28
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Richard Stevenson's A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM: A DONALD STRACHEY MYSTERY. The mystery kept my interest and the wide range of "possible" villians kept me guessing to the end. I especially enjoyed reading a novel clearly written by a gay male. This is not a sex novel but the interactions between Strachey and his life partner were funny, sexy and real life. The only reason that it did not receive five stars was the price for a relatively short read.
One of the Best Mystery Writers Today!.......2003-03-25
If you've read one of Stevenson's "Donald Strachey" mysteries, you will want to read the whole series, and then you will be eagerly waiting for his next mystery to be published. Stevenson's mysteries are addictive, mainly because the characters are so believable, there are more twists and turns to keep you constantly guessing, and they are not boringly serious, they can be quite funny at times.
This story opens as Albany's gay Private Investigator, Donald Strachey, is asked to investigate the death of Phyllis Haig's, gay son, Paul. Apparently the mother believes his lover, Larry, killed Paul, and that it was not a suicide as the police seem to believe. Vernon Crockwell enters the story as the controversial psychologist whose practice is devoted to "curing" homosexuals. Strachey ends up with three clients who want to hire him, to find out the truth, but Strachey soon becomes aware there are a lot of unanswered questions. As the story reveals, Paul Haig's death is much more complicated then he expected. Prepare yourself for a lot of surprises with this one.
The interaction between Donald Strachey and his long-time partner, Timmy, is always well done, and very realistic. All lovers of good mysteries, whether gay or heterosexual, will appreciate this book. Stevenson is a fine writer who knows how to weave a shocking and gripping mystery.

excellent introduction to business in Vietnam.......1999-07-17
This is a well written and informative guide. It is much better written, and much more insightful, than most books of its kind. It is very useful for any person thinking of doing business in Vietnam...in fact, I would call it "essential".
Best book on business in Vietnam.......1999-04-10
Who'd have thought some guy from Oklahoma would write this pithy discussion of business in Vietnam? Few books exist on this topic but Mr. Chambers has written the kind of honest, straightforward business book we need more of.
