Customer Reviews:
An awfully nice little book.......2006-07-28
Appropriately enough, a book about mobile living is economically sized, yet surprisingly luxurious. The photos are tempting, like the best food porn, and helpful besides. The small size makes it conveniant, and the illustrations are alluring. These little houses or wagons offer the comforts of home with the freedom of the open road. There's shepherd's wagons, gypsy vardos, airstream restorations, and a whole host of other options, each more enticing than the last. Brightly-colored, beautfully-constructed, and lit by stained-glass windows, these wagons make the comfiest of homes---and I'm biased toward the tiny myself----look cumbersome and dull.
Book Description
Caldecott Award-winner Simms Taback infuses this favorite children's rhyme with his distinctive, creative flair and humor. His Jack builds a house like no other and fills it with cheeses from all nations, which of course attracts the rat that stirs up the cat. Taback takes the usual cast of characters in this classic cumulative rhyme and presents each in a funny new light that will keep readers laughing. His addition at the end neatly fits an appropriate character into Jack's story and makes his telling even more unique.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book! Wonderfully Illustrated!!.......2007-09-26
You can't go wrong with anything written and/or illustrated by Simms Taback. We bought this originally because I fondly remembered the story from my own childhood, but this surpasses that earlier edition. It is beautifully illustrated and captivating for our kids. They especially like it when you speed read it to them!! We've worn out our first version, but will be ordering another one. My Highest Recommendation!!
Great illlustrations and story - but note that it is paperback.......2006-12-12
I was ordering a bunch of books for children of different ages for a holiday party and picked this one based on its inclusion in the Parents maagazine Best Books of 2006 article. I suppose the $6.99 price should have clued me in, but I just didn't expect a children's book for this age group to be paperback. And the child that I picked this for was very disappointed that all the other kids got hardback books and hers was paperback. I am sure that she will love it once she reads it, but in the excitement of all the gift opening, it was a letdown. This may seem petty, but the book really is beautiful. It just seems really flimsy as a paperback.
This is the house that Jack built.......2006-11-16
This will be our second copy of the book! We read the first one to death... and he has been asking for it ever since!
Excellent book for readers of all ages.......2004-07-29
I got this book originally from the library for my son who was then just turning 2. We absolutely loved it. It is the kind of book that doesn't get old no matter how many times we read it together. He is not nearly 3, and he loves to sit down and read (recite) this book. Everyone who sees it loves the illustrations and the story itself. One of the touches that I like the most is the lettering. It all appears as a collage, making it very fun to look at. 5 very enthusiastic stars.
Let's Visit The House that Jack Built............2002-10-03
As Simms Taback tells the reader at the end of this rollicking, fun-filled adventure: "This Is The House That Jack Built, a favorite rhyme for children for several centuries, was first published in 1755 and probably derived from an ancient Hebrew chant in the 16th century. It was illustrated by Randolph Caldecott in 1878." And now this old and popular chain of events story gets the brilliant Taback treatment. Each clever and creative two page spread dazzles with vibrant color, marvelous, eye-popping detail, and witty asides. Children will revel in all the joyous, manic fun as they linger and explore each intriguing page, finding something new and exciting each time they open the book. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, This Is The House That Jack Built is a timeless masterpiece the whole family can read, share, and laugh over together, and a picture book no home should be without.

Bringing back a repetitive rhyme from the old school, illustrator (and kids' book first-timer) Diana Mayo populates a house and the surrounding farm with all manner of cats, cows, and crowing cocks.
Not everyone's going to remember this rhyming story word for word (especially many kids), but a few lines should begin to refresh most memories: "This the house that Jack built. / This is the malt / That lay in the house that Jack built. / This is the rat / That ate the malt / That lay in the house that Jack built." Kids will enjoy chiming in on the repetition from there, as the story builds to include a cat (to chase the rat), a dog (to worry the cat), a cow with a crumpled horn (to toss the dog), and a cast of others, all the way up to 10 lines in the end. There's even a love interest to keep you guessing: What will happen to the "maiden all forlorn"? Will the "shaven and shorn" priest wake up in time to marry her to the "man all tattered and torn"?
The rhyme is a classic, and a good one. And Mayo's fun style carries the characters and their interrelationships energetically, with clean compositions and bold colors that make the progression easy to follow. (Although that dog who keeps getting tossed by the cow seems to be having just a little too much fun.) (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
Product Description
This classic children's rhyme gathers pace and complexity as it tumbles across the pages. Children will delight in repeating the rhymes and following the antics of animals and characters of every shape and size.
Book Description
Among nomadic peoples, round-shaped homes, echoing natural forms, have sheltered families since the dawn of recorded time. The natural world is filled with circles, but it's surprising how unusual circular houses are in industrialized society. In our disconnected world, the circle has given way to the box.
As David Pearson explains in his introduction, "Like our nomadic ancestors, many of us have a deep yearning to roam with the seasons and be close to nature and the cosmos. The traditional forms of the yurt, tipi, and bender are the apogee of this experience. . . . Nomadic populations live in some of the most inhospitable and barren regions of the world and this is why they are nomads. Whether it be the deserts of the Sahara and Gobi, the steppes of Mongolia, or the polar tundras, these vast areas are either too hot and arid or too cold and windswept to be cultivated. An African grass-covered hut, a Romany gypsy 'bender,' an Asian yurt, or a Native American tipi are all perfect lessons in appropriate design and sustainable building. Refined over generations, they are simple yet sophisticated, beautiful and comfortable."
Remarkable for their economy, resilience, and portability, these structures have continued to exert a powerful appeal in modern times. And beyond practicality, what the circle dwellers in this book speak of most eloquently is the incomparable spiritual resonance of round homes, which "represent the universe in microcosm: the floor (Earth), the roof (sky), and the hole in the roof (the sun)."
Circle Houses is a fascinating glimpse of tradition meeting timelessness, filled with stories of 21st-century nomads and complete with basic instructions for designing and constructing your own yurt, tipi, or bent-frame tent.

Circle Houses.......2003-11-18
I thought the book gave an excellent description of yurts and tipis from a historical perspective and present day use. Its gives case studies/examples of people who current live in these types of unique dwellings. We added a couple of yurts to our North Georgia bed and breakfast inn. We have witnessed some of the feelings first hand that our guests have had that were also mentioned in the book by yurt dwellers.

Customer Reviews:
Memory Skills.......2006-12-22
Until recently, I hadn't thought much about cumulative tales helping with memory but they do. I recommend not skipping a word as you go back over the previous steps. Children (and I) love the art work also in this edition.
I also recommend these cumulative tales and songs.
There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly,
The Buggy That Boogied Away, and
She'll be Coming 'Round the Mountain.
Delightful Language Skills.......2006-10-04
The illustrator adds a special delight to this old cumulative tale.
In addition to the visual and auditory treat, tales such as this are a great boost to language skills.
Giggles galore!.......2006-08-03
My one-year-old son adores this book and brings it to me several times a day to read it to him. It's text-heavy with tons of repetition, so we skip every few verses. He giggles at the rhythm of the text and sometimes even dances side to side. The illustrations are very colorful, consistent with the author's other books and those in this series. I highly recommend!
BRINGS BACK MEMORIES!.......2000-06-12
I read this book as a child, and now am reading this book to my nieces and nephew. What a joy it is to read such good books to young children. This is a must for anyone with youngsters. Buy it! You will not regret it.
Book Description
Here is the story of Jack and his famous house as only award-winning artist Jeanette Winter could present it. The words of the classic nursery rhyme appear in a charming rebus puzzle, with added verses that place Jack's house on a hilltop. Witty paintings bursting with color and action show the satisfying havoc wreaked by the series of animal and human visitors who come up the hill. Young readers will delight in reciting the words of this cumulative rhyme that has entertained children for centuries. And with each turn of the page, they'll revel in the drama that unfolds in the lively and beautifully crafted art.

great fun with the little one.......2007-09-09
I bought this and was quite surprised. Throughout the book, after they introduce a character, they only refer to that character by picture, not with a word or name. It teases your memory. My young one really loves it.

IT'S HARD TO KEEP A GOOD PSYCHOPATH DOWNTIME...
And it's harder to figure which psychopath to fear most! Senator John Caddrick hires a professional assassin to murder his own daughter and threatens to destroy the whole time-touring industry. Caddrick's hired gun plans a high-level double cross -- but then everyone's plans are thrown into chaos when Jack the Ripper's killing spree spreads from Victorian London to Time Terminal Eighty-Six. In this breath-stopping sequel to Ripping Time, retired time scout Kit Carson and ex-con man Skeeter Jackson enter an unholy alliance that surprises everyone -- including Skeeter and Kit.
All they have to do is track down Senator Caddrick's missing heiress, lost somewhere in history, rescue Ianira Cassondra from the clutches of a madman, and keep the most famous time-touring station in the world open for business, while avoiding death in The House that Jack (the Ripper) Built.
Customer Reviews:
A Vast Improvment.......2002-05-01
Ripping time was monotonous and confusing. The House the Jack built provided a clear and workable outcome. Everything works out for the best(for most) and you cheer on Skeeter and his friends the whole way through. The way they finally resolved the plot was a bit rushed but it was a fine book overall. I personally can't wait until the next book in the series.
Absolutely ripping good!!!!!.......2001-04-08
Bad puns aside, I had to force myself to put this one down, in order to deal with necessities like work, food, sleep. This is the second half of the novel begun in "Ripping Time" and the climax(es) are superbly done.
These two books would make an absolutely rousing mini-series.
Time Scouts to the Rescue.......2001-02-08
A great adventure continues. Asprin and Evens agan have a story filled with action of a historical event. Never a dull moment. I read the story in one sitting enjoying every page. The reader is easly placed in the action through the verbal visualization of 19th century, Denver and the Time station. The continous twists and turns add flavor to the story. My only critizism is the epilog. I would like to have seen just a little more detail on what happened to charactors after their return.

A savvy lawyer's wife watches in dismay as her husband fixates on a bizarre abandoned mansion in upstate New York as the key to restoring his virility. As he dives into the daunting restoration project, he soon transforms into a rapacious gambler from the '30s. His wife enlists a practical New Age witch to help her out, and a battle for their souls ensues. Masterton delivers tight pacing and satisfying climaxes and conveys a delicious aura of decadence through details such as dry rot, baccarat, Sobranies, Mallarme, unusual sex, liniment, the music of Nirvana and the scream of the mandrake.
Book Description
"One of the few true masters of the horror genre."
Some houses live in perpetual shadow. Valhalla is one of them. The old mansion was built by legendary gambler and womanizer Jack Belias, and every inhabitant since him has met with tragedy. Even today, Valhalla echoes with a terrible, agonized sobbing. When Craig Bellman stumbled upon Valhalla he felt a fascination he had never known and was determined to live there. He knew it would be the perfect place to save his troubled relationship with his wife, Effie. Out of loyalty to her husband, Effie tried to ignore the horrible feeling the house gave her. But she still hired a spiritualist to rid Valhalla of its fearsome vibrations. As death and injury return to Valhalla, Craig becomes increasingly obsessed by the house spirit of the past "Masterton is a crowd-pleaser, filling his pages with sparky, appealing dialogue and visceral grue."
Customer Reviews:
Nothing to set it apart.......2007-08-06
About: Couple has creepy encounters with a creepy old house
Pros: Steady pace, good characters, nice setting (the creepy house is like a character all its own)
Cons: A decent haunted house story, but does not do much to separate itself from other haunted house stories.
nice twist to the normal haunted house.......2006-04-24
I was hooked from page one. If a book does not catch my interest right away I'm done. I had a hard time putting is one down.
If you are a haunted house fan this is the book for you. "Life is like a book..." and this one you will enjoy
Fun!.......2005-10-30
Graham Masterton wined, dined, and romanced me with his gory, viscerally rich ‘The Devil in Grey.’ Here he makes the past cross the lines with the modern again, this time, as before, dealing with devilish spirits up to no good.
The plot is traditional type of ghost story, with possession, unexplained deaths, haunted houses, and mysterious ‘drawings’ to places and people of the characters. Sure, there’s nothing really new here, but it’s fun anyway.
Pacing doesn’t hurt the book, either. The ending is one that lasts in the readers mind even when the book is read, closed, and locked away on the shelf.Characters are gripping and emotionally driven, particularly the wife Ellie. When violence strikes, it’s bloody, traditional Masterton style. Even though I hold minor qualms with how the ending turned out (not bad writing, just personal grimaces), I rate this book highly. Masterton’s writing style is crafty and addictive, his approach solid and strong, creating an end product that’s both memorable and enjoyable.
Find it, buy it, let your mind soak it up. One can never have too many haunted house stories, especially when the story surrounds manipulative, cruel ghosts who come back from the grave for reasons one would never originally expect.
It's nasty and gorey, but it's not scary........2005-09-18
Sorry fellow scare seekers, this one just didn't cut it for me. It really isn't a "haunted house" story at all, more like a time travelling possession story. I say this because the "haunting" if you can call it that is not limited to the house, but rather inhabits the characters of the story who travel around and do some very nasty bidding on behalf of the house (or should we say on behalf of Jack) The premises of time and ones perception of it were very thought-provoking, but the actual rationale behind some of the events just didn't ring true. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned the killings of some of the characters that came totally out of left field with absolutly no motivation behind them. Now don't get me wrong, there are truly disturbing scences here, and many that are fraught with such a level of misogyny that some individuals may have a hard time reading them. But as a lover of ghost stories, there is a real difference, between being shocked or repulsed by what I'm reading, and being scared by it. This one covered the repulsion factor just fine, but it sure didn't keep me up at night. I'm going to suggest "The Ghost Writer" by John Harwood as a much better example of the genre.
House is solidly constructed horror fiction.......2005-08-19
Every horror writer seems to have within them a variation on the haunted house book just waiting to come out. If half of them were as good as The House That Jack Built, readers would be lucky indeed.
Meet Craig and Effy, a power couple dealing with the aftermath of a shocking crime (which I defy any man to read about without wanting to curl up into a tiny but self-protective ball) who find (altogether now!) the perfect house in Valhalla. But the mansion has a history (don't they all!) and before long, things are going bump in the night, sex is in the air and some very interesting theories are being put forth. From beginning to end, this shocker delivers. My only quibble - and it's a minor one - is that it's somewhat distracting to have a book set in America written by an obviously british author without the differences in language (referring to the trunk of a car as the "boot") and spelling (colour instead of color) edited. But don't let that stop you from paying a visit to The House That Jack Built!
