Save the World . . . or Destroy It!
GURPS Powers is the ultimate book for the ultimate characters in the new Fourth Edition of GURPS! Here's everything you need to create every kind of amazing, off-the-chart superhero you can imagine . . . as well as amazing wizards, wuxia fighters, shamans who command spirits . . . even gods!
Written by GURPS Line Editor and Fourth Edition co-author Sean Punch, GURPS Powers introduces some new rules, but it is mostly about using the rules that are already in the GURPS Basic Set to cover superpowered characters, megawizards, and earth-shattering psionics. GURPS Powers also include guidelines for "special effects" and several different ways to vary a power on the fly -- two crucial concepts for comic-book superheroics.
GURPS Powers is a Fourth Edition GURPS book that completely replaces the Third Edition books GURPS Supers and GURPS Psionics. Like our other Fourth Edition supplements, it's a gorgeous 240-page, full-color hardback.
If you've got a high-powered campaign . or high-powered players . you want GURPS Powers!
Customer Reviews:
This system works to a point.......2006-12-15
I just ran a GURPS Powers campaign, where we went through several adventures using the system detailed in this book.
The players were very pleased with the system, and we had a lot of fun for several months. After each adventure, I would award them with a few character points, to allow them to buff up their characters. The idea was to start the campaign with characters about as powerful as the X-Men, and to gradually develop them until they were about as powerful as members of the Fantastic Four, which is of course, a much more powerful group.
As the players grew their characters, I compensated by raising the point totals of their opponents. This worked for a while, until some of the damage totals from energy attacks became so high that the heroes who used energy damage became much more powerful than the slugfest types, who used their fists instead of energy blasts.
It got to the point where if an energy blast hit someone, they were reduced very far in hit points and the combat didn't really resemble a comic book like setting. I have to wonder how much playtesting the makers of this book really did.
All flaws aside, it is a very comprehensive system with a rich array of powers and ways to build a super hero character. In fact, the possibilities are almost endless. You can create a character like Superman, Wolverine, The Hulk, The Human Torch, etc. Everything is there, with the usual point system that GURPS is famous for. This also means that you can link up campaigns of super heroes with other campaigns, as all of the rules are pretty much the same.
We then attempted to create a campaign which resembled the "Dragonball Z" comic book series. We tried to build a frieza character with 1-million points, just to see what he would be like. I found that at these astronomical totals, the entire system would have to be overhauled in order to have the types of battles depicted in the comic books. Otherwise, you would have characters instantly killing anyone with less than say, 50,000 hit points (by using either a high powered energy attack or a series of multiple attacks with their 50,000 point strength).
Heavy stuff here.......2006-08-21
I had real problems deciding whether or not to buy this book. The biggest stumbling block was the lack of information about the book from anybody besides SJ Games. What would I be getting for my hard-earned money? SJ Games tried to help by showing some pages on their website but they didn't help me make up my mind because I just couldn't get a good feel for what the book was about. I finally decided to buy the book because I'm contemplating running a campaign with Psionic and/or Super powers and this book seemed to cover those topics in greater depth than the basic books did and I've had good experiences with the previous books in this series.
Now that I've read the book I can see why people have been reluctant to try to describe it. GURPS Powers is very much more than a simple repackaging of the 3rd edition of GURPS Supers and GURPS Psionics. The authors have put considerable thought into the whole concept of "Powers" (what they are, what they can do, why they exist, etc.) for all roleplaying genres and have developed a radical new structure for how to implement them within the GURPS rules without doing more than adding a few enhancements to the existing system. This is a truly astonishing accomplishment and frankly I don't have the skill as a reviewer to do justice to their work but I will try anyway.
The first couple of chapters lay the groundwork of their basic concepts, it's necessary to at least skim through these details but it's pretty dry stuff and leaves the reader wondering why they bought the book. Then chapter 3 (Examples) starts to weave the whole meaning of their work together in a very readable fashion and things start to fall into place. The book gets better and better from that point forward.
The key to their revolutionary thinking (and I don't have near enough space here to explain it at length) is that most roleplaying games have some sort of extra-ordinary powers at work. This could be cybernetic, psionic, magic, gods; the list is pretty near endless. These extra-ordinary powers are frequently the key to making the game enjoyable for the players. What would Banestorm be without magic? Or most of the Infinite Worlds without the super-science and dimension-crawling aspects? Would "Carrie" be as interesting if the protagonist could only play practical jokes on her tormenters?
Stepping forward from there, the authors show how to use their theories to create new roleplaying worlds or enhance existing ones. How about creating a mage who has superpowers rather than spells? In many ways that works better for simulating some author's magic systems than the standard "wizards cast spells" model that GURPS Magic uses.
The strange thing that kept occuring to me as I read this book was that I couldn't figure out who was the intended audience for this book. Although it is very interesting and useful for generating super-powered characters, the lack of new abilities means that the book isn't absolutely necessary. On the other hand, this book is an absolute must-have for any GM who is contemplating a campaign with anything more exotic than historical or modern adventuring. But the book is almost exploding with good ideas for generating new characters...
One of the things I've already assimilated from the book is that, as with all GURPS 4th edition books, the GM needs to carefully decide what level of complexity they are willing to tolerate and stick with it. There was an example in the book of what a group of Supers needed to do to move 10 tons of concrete rubble that left me completely in the dark. Not because the example wasn't clear, it was perfectly clear, I just couldn't figure out why anybody would want to go through so much paperwork in their roleplaying.
Although this is true of GURPS in general, it is particularly true of Powers because of the implications of superpowered roleplaying. It's obvious that a sword can parry a mace, but Mr. GM, can a flamebolt parry a laser beam? The players are all looking at you and want a reasonable answer as soon as possible.
As the authors point out, modern science is frequently not useful in answering superpowered rules questions so consistency on the part of the GM is vital. One of the most important parts of the book is a couple of chapters that help the GM think through the implications of their decisions BEFORE they will occur in play. This is a godsend and is easily worth the price of the book by itself.
Another valuable section of the book assists the GM in figuring out how powers will affect their campaigns and helps the GM to find interesting plots that will keep the players coming back for more. The final section of the book briefly discusses nearly all genres that use powers and the conventions that govern playing in them. Although I thought I knew most of them, I found enough interesting material to keep me going for a surprisingly long time.
I haven't looked at the index simply because the book is superbly well organized and I don't think I'll have any problems finding anything I'd need to know on short notice. The authors have made excellent use of color to help organize the information and highlight important items. My only quibbles are that the artwork is somewhat lacking in both creativity and quantity and there are fewer roleplaying examples than I'd like, I find the examples to be extremely useful in understanding the points the authors are trying to make.
In conclusion, this isn't an easy book to comprehend but is well worth the reader's time if they are willing to invest enough of it.

Made a Spelling Bee Champion of ny Son.......2007-10-09
This book/program works! It made a good speller out of one son who was struggling mightily with spelling and a school spelling bee champion out of my other son. It works with all types of students. 2 out of 2 is batting 1.000 in my book.
CD-ROM for Windows only.......2007-07-22
Buyers need to be forewarned (as I wish I had been) that the CD-ROM included with the book is only for Windows computers. We are a Mac family, I will have to search around for another computer to use in order to access the materials on the CD. Had I known this prior to purchase I may have gone with another program. The Quick Start DVD is also Windows only.
The author even says in the introductory material, "We do not have plans to make these two programs available for Macintosh computers." This information needs to be made available to all potential purchasers so that we can make an informed decision.
I am very disappointed in this purchase and cannot even accurately rate it as I have not yet been able to view any of the supplemental materials.
Book Description
Judd, Dennis R., Swanstrom, Todd, City Politics: Private Power Public Policy, 3rd Edition*\ Praised for its narrative style, strong research base, and distinctive theme-that urban politics in the U.S. has evolved as a dynamic interaction between governmental power and private purposes-the new edition of this #1 book is the most extensive revision yet. It has been updated to include preliminary data from the 2000 census, information about urban partisan movements and a new chapter on urban sprawl. Three primary themes are woven throughout the text: the imperative of growth; the challenge of governance; and the politics of secession.
For those interested in urban politics and studies.

Great first purchase.......2007-09-22
The description of this product was on target, and the book came in very good condition. Hardly any writing in it, and not water damaged! The textbook was a very reasonable price and I'll be sure to shop on Amazon again for textbooks.
The group I purchased from was quick, had great customer service, and they replied to my email of questions very promptly. I was very satisfied with the product, the shipment, the entire process really.
City politics.......2002-10-14
This is a pretty informative and interesting book. I would reccomend it to someone interested in persuing an education in urban politics.
Policies and corruption in the city.......2000-05-28
This is a good read for anyone who is interrested in the development of the city and the politics within. It opens with the birth of the city and how advances in technology led to the outward expansion of the city. One of the most interresting features is how the book describes the growth of the politcal machine in Chicago. In a later chapter, the authors then compare the fiscal policies of Chicago and New York City and how machine politics may have been the key to Chicago's success. The book also goes into detail about "white flight": the moving of the middle/upper-class sectors away from the city to settle into different types of suburbs. These suburbs then become a self-sustaining entity capable of enacting their own governmental policies which include exclusionary tactics designed to weed out those of lower incomes, certain age brackets, or those of an "unacceptable" racial background. It then goes into detail about the Court's opinion on these exclusionary policies. If you're interrested in how cities and urban politics are created then this book is a great start.

Customer Reviews:
Not much use for any design work G. Randy Slone's book much better.......2006-03-13
I purchased this book along with High Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual by G. Randy Slone. If you want to read about
300 pages of information you can obtain free from Mr. Self's website then buy all means by this book because it is a repeat of the blamless amplifier theory, however if you really want a design book with the whyfore's included Mr. Slone's book is the book for you and should rate 10 stars for audio design. I really don't understand why Amazon hyped this book. I should have saved my money I expected more from Mr. Self.
first rate.......2006-03-06
This is the third edition and so the reviews prior to 2002 are for earlier editions. The author makes equipment for recording studios.
The book discusses the different alternatives for circuit topologies used in audio amplifiers and their advantages and disadvantages. There are many SPICE simulation graphs with associated discussions.
Considerations on the book.......2006-02-23
The book is very deep in some topics but is very poor in design formulas. The formulas should be included, explained and can be skipped by the readers who are not keen on mathematics.
Some schematic diagrams are simply not readable as the printing size, or the book format, is too small.
Dissppointed for the Fourth Edition.......2005-08-26
If you have a third edition, you should keep using it. I should have kept the $ in my pockey. :(
The newly added Class-D chapter is rather short and trivial. It is just an introduction to Class-D concept. This can be found easily elsewhere. No research, experimental and test results! Disappointed! Has the author listened to current high performance Class-D solutions (like ICEpower, Hypex)?
The other new chapter, DC servo, does contains test/new results. You will learn some useful techniques.
The author should correct some problems (printing, inconsistency between text and figure) that exist in third or earlier editions. However, he didn't. Why?
Lastly, it is still highly recommeded for new readers.
Recommended reading for anyone who wants to design an amp.......1999-05-13
This book is not a "cookbook" approach, but presents well researched and tested approaches. As such it is guaranteed to offend some people (evaluation of design changes and improvements is scientific, as opposed to subjective). Self uses the book to take a shot at much of the patently mumbo-jumbo in high end HiFi, which is entertaining! The book features the "blameless" amplifier and the circuit is given, but it would have been nice for the PCB layout (or a Gerber file..) to be included so that some quick experimentation can be done. The only minus (apart from that) is that there some areas not treated: Nested Differential Feeback loops being one. A very unique book, collecting together a lot of very valuable information.
Book Description
It is approximately 10 years since the Third Edition of
Heat Pipes was published and the text is now established as the standard work on the subject.
This new edition has been extensively updated, with revisions to most chapters. The introduction of new working fluids and extended life test data have been taken into account in chapter 3. A number of new types of heat pipes have become popular, and others have proved less effective. This is reflected in the contents of chapter 5.
Heat pipes are employed in a wide range of applications, including electronics cooling, diecasting and injection moulding, heat recovery and energy conservation, de-icing and manufacturing process temperature control, and chapter 7 discusses some of the latest uses, while retaining full data on those established for many years.
Appendices have been updated, as appropriate.

Book Description
Among the many states of late medieval Italy, one stands out for its unfamiliarity to an English audience and for its neglect in historical research: that of the Este family, lords (later Dukes) of the cities of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio in northern Italy. This book is the first modern attempt to provide a detailed analysis of the political structure of this state based on archive sources. Much of the book is concerned with the ways by which the Este used their vast landed resources in and around Ferrara to build up and reinforce their personal political authority both within and outside their dominions. Among the major themes examined are the continuing presence of political feudalism in the relations between the Este and their supporters, the place of the court in Ferrarese noble society, and the violent imposition of Este authority over the powerful nobles of the Apennine hills.
Book Description
Today, even as America asserts itself globally, it lacks a grand strategy to replace "containment of communism." In this short, sharp book, Gary Hart outlines a new grand strategy, one directing America's powers to the achievement of its large purposes. Central to this strategy is the power of American ideals, what Hart calls "the fourth power." Constitutional liberties, representative government, press freedom--these and other democratic principles, attractive to peoples worldwide, constitute a resource that may prove as important to national security and the national interest in this dangerous new century as traditional military, economic and political might. A bracing vision of an America responsive to a full spectrum of global challenges, The Fourth Power calls for a deeper understanding both of the threats we face and the profound strengths at our disposal to fight them.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent vision for America.......2006-01-01
Gary Hart's proposals for America's "large purposes" for the 21st century should find support from both the left and the right. While he makes it abundantly clear that he does not support the current administration's actions, his proposals and and worldview can be satisfying to Democrats and Republicans, at least if they are not too close to the fringes. This is a book about ideas, not a compilation of proposed programs, so it can be argued that it is naive. Hart does provide some examples of how the ideas might be implemented in practice, but there is clearly much more work to be done. Since such work should be done on a bipartisan basis, I believe he was correct in keeping the book short (and even repetitive, as it was) and concentrating on grand strategy. In summary, I found the book inspiring during a time when there is so much partisan bickering. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to see how we can move forward in America united, not divided.
Disappointing, Platitudinous .......2005-12-04
. I had always thought that Gary Hart was one of the more thoughtful Democrats on the scene and have always regretted the ritual gutting the press inflicted on him when he was otherwise well positioned to become the President in 1988. I understand from my fellow political junkies he is considering running for the 2008 election. I'm not sure whether this book is part of his campaign strategy--it seems all candidates write a book, or like Kennedy, have a book written for them, before running.
. Sen. Hart starts with a reasonably good idea, that American exceptionalism-America means something by virtue of its distinct democratic, tolerant and egalitarian values-should be the basis of American foreign policy. This is an idea that most Democrats and Republicans could agree upon. Unfortunately, the book quickly bogs down in platitudinous observations. By page 50, I found it increasingly difficult to read; one can only see the same repackaged idea so many times before looking for something else to read.
. Good try, Sen Hart. Please develop your idea further. It's worth discussing; it's just that this book didn't do it.
Gary Hart provides a rudder and an anchor........2004-09-29
Gary Hart's "The Fourth Power" only whets my appetite for more from this giant of a political philosopher. This is the most important book on "grand strategy" for this country since George Kennan's work that led to the "containment policy," which served our nation's foreign policy and leadership in the world for a half-century. Since the fall of communism, as we then knew it, the U.S. has been adrift and devoid of a centering philosophy, subjecting us to the whims of individual presidents. This is dangerous, and Senator Hart's thinking should be employed to help us see the need for a unifying theme, based on our unique principles, and to guide us in adopting one as a democratic republic.
It's time for a strategic review, but is this too simple?.......2004-09-08
The United States and the world around us is changing. For half a century the world situation was framed as part of the super-power struggle between the Soviet Union bloc and the so called Free World. Even the smaller countries, Cuba, the little African states, Israel and the Middle East had overtones of the super-power struggle.
Then it all changed. And we are still formulating what we are going to do. There is a view that the country under George W. Bush is heading towards building an Empire. The United States has poweres economically, politically, and militarily. Mr. Hart argues that there is a fourth power - principle.
We are heading into a strange new world. The rise of non-governmental organizations like Al Qaeda present a new kind of threat. The rise of a united Europe, bigger with more people, more money than the United States - there is no one else in the world big enough to go to war with the US. The problems of AIDS throughout Africa and explosively growing in Asia present a future bleak for most of the world.
Mr. Hart suggests a strategy for the United States to follow based on building on American principles of participatory democracy. I wish I could hear more of this debate from the two people running for President rather than the opponent bashing that seems to occupy most of what I hear.

a very good book from children 10 to 12 to read. This book is extra intresting because Madison gets kissed!
From The Files of Madison Finn Just Visiting.......2005-01-05
From the Files of Madison Finn Just Visiting
From The Files Madison Finn is about a girl who has to go to her Grandma's house for the Fourth of July. Madison would rather stay home with her best friends, and go to the parade. At least she had her computer and dog. Madison finds that it might not be as bad as it seems. Madison's Grandma Helen has a best friend named Mable, and they are neighbors. It just so happens that Mable's grandson Mark who is a year older then Madison is visiting. Madison thinks she might like him. Finally on the Fourth of July Madison and Mark go to the carnival together and they kiss.
Madison Finn has brown hair. She is thirteen years old and is an only child. Madison likes going to the lake with her friends, and loves summer vacation. Madison seems like a fun person to be around, and is popular. Madison's grandma Helen lives near Chicago. She has no pets and lives alone. She is old and has a friend named Mable. She is very organized and loves to paint. Mark has brown hair and loves to play tennis. He is fourteen years old, and helps his grandma every summer.
I enjoyed reading this book. It kept me busy and was easy to read. My favorite part in the story is when Madison and Mark kiss. I would recommend this book to a friend because it is exciting and you never know what will happen next. Also it deals with problems that could happen to any one.
the best book on earth!.......2005-01-01
Madison finn is really excited to go to Far hills 4th of July bash. But when her mother goes on a buisness trip in southern U.S. she has to stay with her grandmother and miss the 4th of July bash. At her grandmothers house, she meets a boy that is staying next door. Then the summer fireworks start to really pick up in Madisons life.
MY FAVORITE ONE!.......2004-06-28
Out of the first 9 books, the 9th one, "Just Visiting", is my favorite one. This book is about Madison having to visit her Gramma for the 4th of July while Far Hills has a big bash. Madison is really upset until she meets a young boy, Mark. They hang out almost every day and their love for each other grows. Then, when they both go to Winnetka's Fourth of July carnival, Madison and Mark see what REAL fireworks mean. This book is very romantic and I suggest it most out of the first 9 books. Buy "Just Visiting" today!
jesi's thoughts.......2004-06-27
This has got to be like my most favorite book next to like two others. It is so romantic to think that in only about a week you could get your first kiss, especially from someone as nice as Mark. I love tennis to, and the beach, and like everything they did together. I should have called the love connection sooner. I mean, it was obvious, yet so surprising you had to put the book down just to breathe.
Book Description
Radical criminology's distinctive, non-mainstream perspectives on environmental crime and justice issues, and on state crime and terrorism, are fully explored in completely new chapters of the "Primer in Radical Criminology" (4th edition). Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, this college-level textbook has been much praised for insightfully framing the problem of crime within the contexts of social class, race, gender, culture and history.
The wide-ranging new chapter on "The Environment, Crime and Justice" addresses such topics as: environmental pollution as a crime; environmental justice research; global warming and the end of oil; and the potential of a "green" criminology. The provocative new chapter on "State Crime and Terrorism" offers analyses of: political crime versus state crime; the absence of state crime in orthodox criminology; war as state crime; state and anti-state terrorism; and genocide, among other topics.
In its eleven other extensively updated chapters, the "Primer" presents radical/critical perspectives on: criminological theory; the causes of crime; conceptions of state and law; policing; courts; punishment and corrections; and many other subjects.
