Book Description

"Like every other Mustang fan, as soon as I heard about this supercharged car I couldn't wait for it to be built."
-William Clay Ford, Jr.
Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Ford Motor Company

A factory supercharged Ford Mustang had long been on the wish list of muscle car fans, but it took the passion of a single man to make it happen: O. John Coletti. Coletti? That was one name in the Ford Motor Company phone book guaranteed to stir up differing opinions among the huge auto manufacturer's upper management. Maverick or visionary? Tyrant or leader?

One thing was certain about the mercurial Coletti: he had an unswerving faith in the value of high performance. And after almost single-handedly rescuing the Ford Mustang from discontinuation via a covert, renegade program, Coletti had ridden his notoriety into his own throne within Ford-as head of the elite Special Vehicle Team. But in late 2000, Coletti stretched the boundaries of his own legend, abruptly canceling the division's highly-anticipated 2002 Mustang Cobra while disrupting marketing plans and enraging SVT's network of dealers.

This is the untold story of how Coletti's performance mandate led to the creation of a car known as the "Terminator," the 2003 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra. It's a tale of closely-guarded secrets and daunting challenges as a small, elite team struggled to create a car that will long stand as an icon of American muscle. With interviews ranging from company chairman Bill Ford to the assembly line workers of the historic-yet-antiquated Dearborn Assembly Plant, Iron Fist, Lead Foot takes readers behind the scenes of this breakneck program and brings them face-to-face with the towering presence of an auto industry legend, John Coletti.

5 out of 5 stars Iron Fist, Lead Foot: John Coletti and Ford's "Terminator.......2007-09-02

Great Book!

If you own one of these extraordinary cars this is your chance to enjoy the inside story of how a close knit team of gifted men and women brought a car back from the edge and then set a high water mark that will endure for years to come.

It is a story of vision, passion and absolute commitment to creating the best. You get an inside peak at Detroit and Ford in particular, the politics the extraordinary capabilities of the institution and the people inside. You get to see the birth of a modern day supercar from concept to delivery and meet the people and inparticular the one man who made it happen against all odds.

If you are lucky enough to own or have owned one of these cars this book is a must have addition to the history you are part of. Even if you don't own one of these cars the book and its story is special. Get it, you won't be disappointed, it is documented proof that one man with his beliefs, talent and conviction can make not just a difference but an extraordinary difference even in the face of what seems like impossible odds.

Great story and high drama.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-04-20

This was an excellent book that gives you a behind the scenes look at the making of an American icon. John Coletti was man who made the SVT Cobra great

5 out of 5 stars For every Cobra driver.......2007-03-08

The Cobra is a very underappreciated car and this book brings it all to the surface. The 03-04 Cobras are a special breed and you can't fully understand just how special they are until you read this book. All the work and dedication that was poured into these cars is all revealed. This is the official baby book of the SVT Cobra giving every ounce of information you could ever want/need to know. If you don't gain a better understanding and appreciation for 03-04 Cobras after reading this book, you shouldn't be allowed to drive one!

4 out of 5 stars A must for 03 Cobra Owners .......2007-01-19

This is a great book for those Ford Mustang car buffs. It answers a lot of questions and misinformation that came about with the introduction of the 2003 Cobra. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves cars.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!!!.......2007-01-12

There is a lot of information in the book I didn't know. This is a must have if you own a 03/04 cobra. The only negative thing I have to say is the pictures are in black and white. Color photos would have made it much better.

2 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled!.......2003-11-02

Trust me, because I was. It may sound like a good idea to throw these three iconic monsters together,... but alas, there is always the problem with execution, yeah? Convoluted and contrived in the extreme. Definitely leaves a sour taste like the last silly Alien movie did. And I personally thought that the manga styled art was too benign looking and underwhelming for characters of such a terrifying and imposing nature. Good for a laugh maybe, but little else.

2 out of 5 stars Oh Brother..........2003-08-08

This is pathetic. A spin off of Alien Ressurection is bad enough, but to mix it with the terminator is complete stupidity. And then to make me disgusted to say that the predator is my favorite movie hurts. this is a good concept, but it really needs to be redone and fast.

2 out of 5 stars Convoluted and contrived........2003-06-20

Which is fair enough. I mean, to get these three classic movie bad guys together, you need to bend a few rules. A damn good idea, but in this case, extremely poorly executed. They should have just left it alone. One star for the monsters, one star for the cover.

2 out of 5 stars huh?.......2003-04-28

Well I can't deny it...i absolutely love the Alien, Predator and Terminator. So when I heard of the crossover that pit all 3 against each other, I was thrilled...until I bought it and read it, that is.

This is probably the most convoluted and bizarre story yet in the Aliens vs. Predator universe. It hardly consists of any of the 3 fighting each other at all...at least not to the extent of which the cover and blurb on the back would have one assume. The story tells of John Connor and the resistance defeating Skynet, only to have Skynet reawakened years later by Terminators that have gone into deep cover, posing as scientists. To assure victory, samples of Alien DNA have been used to construct a new generation of Terminator, which the Predators see as a great threat of war.

If it sounds ridiculous...it is. The story is bizarre and goes in all different directions. And worse yet...it spins off of Alien: Resurrection. That alone makes me not like this comic, aside from the bizarre story and sub-par artwork. The story even has Ripley 'become' a Predator. So...she's human, she's Alien, and now she's Predator. The book just gets worse and worse as you go on.

I suppose if you are a fan of any or all of the characters, like I am, it should pique your interest. But the sloppy and senseless story combined with the elements that made Resurrection such a bad movie, not to mention the lack of attention paid to detail both in artwork and in story, just make this comic unreadable. This is a crossover that had so much potential, and it could have been in so many different, better ways...but it turned out to be nothing more than an attempt to throw 3 popular franchises into one book as a cash-graber. Buy this if you are a collector and want it for your collection, but don't bother reading it. Otherwise just stay away from it completely.

3 out of 5 stars it was ok.......2002-07-01

AvPvT is a very interesting plot, but the it gets one star off because the Aliens are only featured in three pages at the most, and they weren't drawn as well as the predators or terminators. How do each of the three races fit in the story? The Terminators are using Alien anatomy to perfect their combat effeciency, and the Predators have come in to stop that. The story follows Ripley, after Alien Resurrection. She is forced to follow Call and her friends to infiltrate a military compound to stop the Alien research that is going on there. The mission goes wrong when they encounter a Terminator/Alien hybrid and a band of predators that kill most of the team and cause havoc, and you figure it all out from there. The story was rushed for a book of this length, and a lot of events happen waaay too quickly, and some events take too long. For instance, one part where the team witnesses a terminator/alien hybrid fight a predator takes 12 pages, while an event where two terminator/alien hybrids single handedly attack and destroy 2 military bases, and wipe out an entire fleet of ships takes 10 pages!!!! AvPvT gets a point off for that. However, it gets 3 points for art and creativity. The art is about as close as you'll get to an anime styled AvP comic, it was all well drawn with a lot of effort and very original. The idea of how the story continues off Alien Resurrection is very original, the way the plot uses the three sides is original as well, though the aliens deserved more credit. Its a unique book. If you want an AvP book with unique art and story, this is it. But if you want something with more bite, with more of a realistic yet cinematic feel, consider getting Stronghold.

3 out of 5 stars Evil Hour - Russell Blackford.......2007-07-31

Terminator Model--. This is the second book so I suppose it may make a bit more sense after the first, but there is a model 799.

Also, some Skynet plot to suborn humans to do its will by programming. Mostly, the interesting parts of the book are when John is involved.

The characters themselves have discussions about how it is very hard to cope with all this time travel stuff, and now they have superwarriors from another reality with them, and are looking to travel to others. That's a lot of fighting to do.

4 out of 5 stars Dunks t2 review.......2002-11-27

Yes mate it's a bangin book. I've read S.M Stirlings 2 terminator book which are also great but this one was so action packed and the sroryline kept up it's pace all the way through. It left me wanting to read the next book AN Evil Hour straight away but i'm still waiting for it to come out. Also the squad of soldiers that are all super hard was a great idea. Jade is one tough bird.
Drop me a line if you have any news on the next book, cheers dunk.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2002-11-20

Ok i just finished reading this book and i must say it was excellent. There are 2 storylines included one continues directly from T:2 but the other is basically going from as if they decided to go into hiding and never defeated the T-1000 meaning John still has the help of his T-800 body guard. It was really good and both stories end with one hell of a cliffhanger which makes me really wish that i didnt have to wait until May for the second book. My advice is if your a fan of the series to definately go out and get this book. Some say its confusing but only in the first 5 pages once you get farther and get used to it you will greatly enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Fast, exciting and intelligent.......2002-11-07

"Dark Futures" is an exciting novel with a lot of fast action and an incredibly mean new Terminator from the future.

The story moves really fast, on two different time lines. On both of them, John Connor and his mother Sarah are trying to stop Skynet from destroying humanity, but it is a lot stronger than they are, and maybe smarter. The new Terminator is almost indestructible, and they have to hit it with everything they've got.

As well as all the action, between the lines, the book is looking at interesting stuff like Artificial Intelligence, and whether we can change the future, or whether the future is fixed. You can tell that the author has really thought about how AI and time travel would work.

The characters are good, too. It is interesting to see John Connor grow up in the two time lines. The genetically enhanced people who come back from the new future to help him against Skynet and the new Terminator are especially cool. They are still human, but maybe only just. Jade is really strong, much stronger than any of the men, and very beautiful, but she is also quite a complex character.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a Try.......2002-10-31

Try it if you are a Terminator fan. The two timelines cause confusion sometimes. The author tends to jump back and forth in terms of time even in a single timeline. Perhaps, narrating the events in a proper sequence will make it easier to understand.

If you want nothing but action, then this one is a good read.
But for a nice twist in the story, read T2: Infiltrator and T2:Rising Storm. S.M.Stirling books are superior than this one.

5 out of 5 stars formative look at alex ross' first series.......2004-03-24

It's his earliest work, but still fascinating. In some panels you see what his work will become. Yes, for hardcore Alex Ross freaks and completists, but worth it if you never saw it for the covers alone. Better yet, it's probably going to increase in value...

2 out of 5 stars Vintage Alex Ross?.......2004-03-14

If you're an Alex Ross fan, like myself, you're probably anxious to see this early effort of his from awhile back. Beware - the artwork, even though digitally enhanced, or whatever they did with it, is murky and dark throughout, and, in some cases, I couldn't figure out what was going on in the panels. If you know somebody who has this, borrow it from them before deciding on whether or not to purchase a copy for yourself. My personal copy will probably be going on E-bay in the near future. Better to save up your sheckels and buy MYTHOLOGY - which is worth every cent, and then some.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Terminator story.......2004-02-20

Before artist Alex Ross made a name for himself with Marvels and Kingdom Come, he made his debut with Terminator: The Burning Earth; a tie in with the Terminator 2 film. The story finds an aged adult John Connor leading the remnants of the human resistance against Skynet's forces as Skynet prepares one final attack on humanity. Ron Fortier's script is full of cheesey dialogue mixed in with some brilliant ideas and an anticlimatic ending. The real star of this graphic novel is Ross' artwork, which may not be as sophisticated as his recent work, it still manages to present the story brilliantly and perfectly fits the Terminator universe. This new "Digitally Remastered Collector's Edition" (sounds just like a DVD doesn't it?) seems to try to cash in on Ross' name rather than it's license, which made me a bit skeptical when I picked this up, but I was pleasently surprised for the most part. All in all, Terminator fans or fans of Ross' unique art should give this a look.

4 out of 5 stars different but good.......1999-08-20

burning earth is a story about the future briefily shown in the begining of the movie and during flash backs and dreams. it is the story of a middle aged john conner and his rebel band out to destroy skynet the master computer behind the terminators. a good storie that stays true to the first movie but of course it couldnt happen after the events of the second.

    4 out of 5 stars T3 for english.......2004-04-01

John Connor, now older, is still a target for killer cyborgs from a possible future. The human resistance of the future has also sent back a Terminator, who saved Connor's life before. John's cyborg assassin, a Terminatrix(T-X), is far more advanced than anything ever seen in previous models. If he doesnt survive, the future of humans is lost. His only hope lies within himself, a girl from his past, and a Terminator(who looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger).

I thought it was a good book and helped further explain the movie. It added more detail to the scenes. Its action packed and hard to put down. This novel will be a favorite for any terminator or schwarzenegger fan. While the movie may not be as good as the others, the book is just as good as any.

    5 out of 5 stars Terminator 3 rocks.......2003-12-10

This book is the most thrilling and exciting book ever. It has awesome details to show the reader what is happening in the scene combined with an all ready spectacular plot this book is awesome and deserves all the complements it gets. The book tells an awesome story and has amazing events that will keep the reader reading intensly. The movie was also great but I think that reading the book before the movie sort of ruined the ending but all in all it was okay. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes to read and is a fan of the terminator series.

4 out of 5 stars Based on the Movie with A Little More Insight.......2003-10-21

I watched Terminator 3 in the movies before I read the book. It was good to refresh my memory of the movie, because the movie was intense and, the way memory works, you inevitably forget certain important scenes.

If you have not seen the movie, I would highly recommend the book. It describes many of the scenes in great detail. Also, some events in the movie that are a bit unclear are explained quite well in the book. For instance, when the T-X reprograms Terminator's memory system, it would seem as though it would be impossible for the Terminator to be on John Conner's side again. But the book explains that the Terminator re-booted his computer system, and thus was able to have a fresh start. In the movie, this is not explained at all, and the Terminator just comes back to save John Conner, which appears puzzling since he was, at that point in time, programmed to harm John Conner.

The book is very action-focused - with very vivid descriptions of the actions that are occuring. I am actually quite impressed with the ability to write a book based on a movie of this complexity -- and still make it very readable, exciting, and a fun read.

    2 out of 5 stars Inconsistent storyline.......2003-09-02

I read the book after having seen the movie. A book is supposed to give more of an insight into characters and the storyline than the movie can convey, but if a book is based on a movie (not the other way around) I would expect to see some consistency. I have to note one major mistake in the storyline from the book: Both in the book and in the movie, the Terminator tells John and Kate that Kate sent him back, not John, as the future John was dead. However, the book clearly shows the future John Connor sending the Terminator back through time (right in the beginning chapters). Unless there's something I'm missing here, that's a pretty bad blunder. On a positive note, it's still fun to read!

5 out of 5 stars The machines are rising........2003-08-02

Artificial intelligence has been growing by leaps and bounds in the last 40 years, but advances in the field have been difficult, and recognition that advances have indeed been made prove to be very transitory. Research in AI is very odd for this reason: the belief that one has discovered an intelligent software system is very short lived, unlike other fields of research. It seems that researchers in AI are too hard on themselves, too easily persuaded, that their discoveries do not represent true intelligence.

Writers though have expressed considerable enthusiasm regarding AI, and this book, and the movie that accompanies it, is ample proof. If only the field was advanced as this book portrays it to be. Concrete results and applications of AI though are currently accelerating, and there is little doubt that battlefield robots will be a natural consequence of the current AI technology.

The book illuminates to some extent the method of time travel that was not discussed in the movie: the Hawking/Einstein wormhole scenario but generalized to superstrings. The superstring wormhole/time travel machine was discovered in the story by a graduate school at Oxford...an incredible achievement for one individual, and even more astounding given the fact that current superstring theory has no experimental ramifications, except for predicting a huge value for the cosmological constant. To go from the current state of superstring theory to one where one can do spacetime engineering as a consequence is quite a leap in knowledge. The wormhole is opened by the focusing of sunlight using of all things a solar sail, which results in several hundred terawatts of energy over nanosecond time scales to arrive at the place of the singularity equipment. Objects are able to travel backward in time, and the time machine has a replica under human control.

The story has some plausibility in light of the current use of artificial intelligence in network engineering, especially network security, network event correlation, and network capacity planning. Indeed, it was announced this week that a technology is now available that will identify security risks and take action using auto-adapting artificial intelligence. The story makes Skynet one of these smart network applications, so intelligent in fact that it becomes "self-aware", gets paranoid about human intentions, and therefore orders a massive nuclear strike in order to remove the human threat. This move by Skynet makes the story somewhat implausible, for if, as the story holds, there is no "central core" to Skynet, it being instead a distributed application that runs on computers all over the world, then it would destroy itself in the very act of a global nuclear strike. It would have been better for Skynet to "lay low" and make sure power systems cannot be tampered with instead of ordering such a self-destrucutive act. It is the power systems that are most crucial for the survival of Skynet, and its distributed nature requires such power sources to be left intact globally, and not just "under the mountain" where its inventors program it. In addition, there is no need in the story for Skynet to become "self-aware" in order for it to engage in reasoning that will protect it from harm. The agents and spiders it moves around in the global Internet could make logical deductions to this effect. Such agents would then spend most of their time insuring that power supplies are redundant enough to keep Skynet's global nature intact.

The action in the story is typical of the Terminator movies and book series, with the female-emulating TX Terminator robot, highly sophisticated technologically, taking the story for sure in this regard. But the story also captures the introspection of John Connor, the main character and hero, and the one responsible for leading the future war against the machines. A human being facing this knowledge of the future would be under considerable stress, and this is brought out in the story via his dreams. The dreams are of a nightmarish future, with a devastating war of humans against machines, a war that Connor and his lieutenants will eventually win, much to the chagrin of the machines. The machines can't accept their defeat, and consequently send replicas of themselves through time to try and kill Connor and his lieutenants.

Should we label the machines as intelligent considering their behavior? Do intelligent entities engage in the violence and horror that these machines do? One can of course imagine schemes and plans that might justify such behavior, but a more practical strategy would be to ignore human interactions, or possibly engage in a mutual symbiosis. Intelligent entities realize the waste of resources and intellect in the making of violent confrontation, using it only as last resort. There are so many scenarios that would be more optimal for the course of action of these machines, and it would not be a credible argument to hold that they act as they do because of their training via humans, considering the relative sparsity of human violence throughout history. One should interpret therefore the machine decision for war as a mistake, and not one that is practical, and therefore not moral. They failed to seek alternatives that would insure their survival, and this is ample proof that they are not intelligent, or at best marginally so.

The book though in a sense is a portent, however inaccurate, of things to come, and things that are happening right now in artificial intelligence. We do not have robot armies, but we have AI invading many domains: financial engineering, network engineering, mathematics, physics, Ecommerce, bioinformatics, to name just a few. The applications of AI are accelerating, and there is every indication that this trend will continue. We are entering a world of the silicon geniuses, the world of the avatars: we are indeed witnessing, and are priveleged to do so, the rise of the machines...

    4 out of 5 stars A pre-DVD-era movie gem..........2000-11-10

Before the T2 Ultimate Edition DVD came out, this book was probably one of the most exhaustive sources of information regarding the movie, along with `The Making of T2' paperback. It's basically the final draft of the screenplay along with production notes and anecdotes about each scene. There are also hundreds of mostly black-and-white stills that correspond to each scene as the script goes on. Also included are the many moments that were cut from the theatrical release, most of which, thankfully, has been restored in the Special Edition. This includes Sarah's dream with Kyle Reese, The Dysons at home, the garage head surgery, T-1000's "glitching", and several other notable omissions. And as you read the screenplay, you'll see that quite a few of the lines spoken in the film differ from what is written. Some of the final ad-libs and slight changes of premise are discussed in the scene notes, and the various reasons (if any) for the slight alterations.

The book also devotes a chapter to parts of previous drafts that included many scenes that were never filmed, mostly due to production costs, as well as notes and commentary about them. The most notable almost-scene is the time machine room, where the resistance sends Reese to 1984, and the second Terminator to 1994. Another abandoned moment is the T-1000 wreaking havoc at the Salceda camp (the trailer-park/junkyard-looking place in the desert) following the departure of the three heroes. This scene would've shown more T-1000 morphs and `gags'. Like the photos that correspond with the final script, the storyboards of these lost moments are shown along with the script to give you an idea of what each scene would've looked like.

I found the most interesting part to be the introduction by co-writer/co-producer/director James Cameron. He talks about the grind of completing T2 in just a year, and probably his most profound revelation about himself: that writing the script is his least-favorite part of movie production. I found this little revelation to be rather ironic, because I always felt that his scriptwriting ability is his strongest suit. Well, maybe not with `Titanic', but that's me.

Sadly, just about all of the stuff discussed in this trade paperback, and then some, has been incorporated into the Special Features disc of the Ultimate Edition DVD. If you've already entered the digital age of movie technology, this book is pretty much just a relic of the pre-DVD era.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic detailing of excellent film.......1999-10-05

I really enjoyed Terminator 2. It had some great scenes that the movie left out - like scenes with Kyle in the future and in Sarah's dream. Also had more characterization because you could read what the characters were thinking. Would have liked to have had the scene where the "learning chip" is turned on put in the movie. Mr. Frakes described a poignant moment when Miles Dyson dies. Highly recommend this book to all T1, T2, and sci-fi fans. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A mind blowing screenplay.......1999-09-05

James Camerons follow up to the Terminator has recieved both critical acclaim and criticism. I for one, loved the first Terminator movie. Terminator 2 was a worthy followup to the series. The action, the drama, the message, it was all there. Sure, some of his was hammered home, but its such a fun ride, you don't care. The screenplay itself is remarkable. It contains commentary and scenes that didn't make the final cut. For all you how need a testement to Camerons genius, this is it.

    Book Description

Despite the sacrifice of a T-850 and the heroic efforts of John Connor and Kate Brewster, Skynet became operational. It is now 2029 AD, and the war between the human Resistance and Skynet rages on. With small guerrilla forces, John and Kate continue to sabotage and destroy Skynet forces . . . but it's not enough.

Before Judgment Day, Danny Avila helped program what became Skynet and was plagued by nightmares of Terminators destroying cities and decimating mankind. He disappeared two days before Judgment Day, and didn't resurface until Kate and John discovered him years later. Danny still can't remember what happened to him just before Skynet attacked. He has the nagging feeling that he has forgotten something very important. Despite this memory lapse, he has become a vital member of the Resistance.

Horrible dreams have begun to haunt him again. Could these dreams be a psychic link to his past self? John Connor has an idea: if Danny past and Danny present can communicate, perhaps they can help the Resistance gain an edge and defeat Skynet. But to accomplish such a connection would place Danny at tremendous physical and emotional risk. It's a dangerous experiment, but one that might prove the salvation of mankind's future... and the death of Danny.

"Arnold's adventure fans, rejoice; this is the stuff that role-playing dreams are made of."

2 out of 5 stars No research done at all.......2007-08-29

Okay I love the Terminator movies, but this book was just plain bad.

First of all, the author couldn't get the model number of any of the Terminators right. Right in T2, Arnold's character says that he is a "Cyberdyne Systems model 101."

Yet everytime John runs into a terminator in this book with Arnold's face, he always says something like, "He reminds me of Uncle Bob," or "I can't believe we defeated these things back with just bullets." Then saying that it's the same one that went back in time to protect him. When he says they are obviously T-800's or T-1's or some other model number.

And if that wasn't bad enough, the author constantly relied on time paradoxes and going back and forth between two time periods and communicating across time with no rational explaination of why or how this was able to be done.

In short if you love the Terminator movies and the comics, do yourself a favor and skip this one. If you want a real GOOD Terminator book series to read, check out the T2: Infiltrator series.

This was just crap. Then again what do you expect from one of the writers from the New Jedi Order series?

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book That Salvages the T3 Movie Disaster.......2005-11-07

Aaron Allston superbly patches up the gaping holes created by the movie T3: Rise of The Machines. This book gives an exciting and technically competent look at the world as it is in 2029 while providing the reader with a new story that is very much more convincing than the crap created by the introduction of TX in T3. If you are like me and were very dissapointed with T3 the movie, and found it very difficult to believe that a defeated Skynet could produce and send back in time not only the prototype T-1000, but also a fully functional T-X, then this book is for you. Allston deliberately stays away from using TX in this book. The only real link to T-3 is the involvement of one of the Skynet programmers working under General Brewster just before judgment day; otherwise, this could very well be a standalone work that is a brilliant addition to the Terminator series. Another great feature of this book is that the reader "finally" gets a real close-up look at the day-to-day operations of John Connor's resistance. The 2029 battles are superbly described and technically believeable! The action is riveting. Best of all, Allston doesn't fill up the story with a lot of "fluff." The whole story is to the point and keeps your attention throughout. What a story. If I were king for a day, I would erase the movie that "was" T-3 and find some way to adapt this book for the T-3 sequel - It's just that good. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A good book in the terminator universe.......2005-01-28

Judgement Day has happen. Millions are dead. Skynet rules the earth. But John Conner and Kate Brewster lead the resistance for mankind. A member or Conner's intercircle Daniel Avila has found a way to communicate with his younger self. Danny Avila was young programmer who was working on the Skynet. Now the Conner will launch a bold plan to use the Danny of the past so all of mankind can have a future.
This was a good book. Mr. Allston does a great job of taking the Terminator 3 characters to a whole new level. This book moves a good pace that keeps the readers interest. A fan of the terminator movies will want to miss this book.

4 out of 5 stars Allston does it again!.......2004-02-13

I was torn when this book came out. On one hand, I thought Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was a very mediocre film. The fact that not only did it fudge the continuity of the previous films but was also inconsistent within itself did not help matters. So when I heard there was going to be a tie-in novel, and a hardcover to boot, I had no interest in reading it. Then I heard it would be by Aaron Allston. Allston, whose X-Wing novels rank among the best of the Star Wars expanded universe, and whose "Doc Sidhe" novels are also surprisingly good, is one of my favorite escapist writers and he has, I think, the potential to write some Really Good Books down the line. So, as I said, I was torn: I wanted the new Allston book, but I certainly did *not* want to buy a hardcover Terminator novel. Well, I found it cheap, so I bought it. And once more, Allston failed to disappoint.

Allston's writing is not as strong here as in some of his previous novels, but it's still well above the standard for movie tie-in novels. He writes action (and in this novel there's certainly plenty of it) well; this is definitely a page-turner. The characters aren't terribly interesting, but they're consistent and amusing -- one of the things I love about Allston is his ability to make me laugh -- and not *too* clichéd. And if you can forgive the never-quite-explained time-traveling-dreaming thing, the plot is certainly lots of fun to watch unfold.

This novel is much better written and much more entertaining than S.M. Stirling's (now obsolete) T2 trilogy, if not as dense. It also goes a long way toward filling in many of the plotholes and inconsistencies in the Terminator 3 film. It's interesting to see more of Cyber Research Systems' and Skynet's history, as well as a better look than we've seen before (outside of the comics) at the post-Judgment Day future. Although I will say that the future here certainly seems a lot less bleak and grim and horrible than it did in the flashback scenes of the original Terminator film. But I digress.

If you're a Terminator fan, if you've liked any of Allston's other books, or if you're just looking for a fun, action-packed and reasonably well-written leisure read, this is for you. Lots of fun; recommended.

I do wish, though, that Allston had a slightly higher original novel to tie-in novel ratio. I think right now he's got three original novels and eleven books set in various film or RPG universes. I hope he has the chance to even up that score a bit.

4 out of 5 stars A peek behind the curtain at the fourth wall.......2004-08-29

Back when I was really big on cinematic special & visual effects-- before CGI took over in a big way-- this book was one of the heavily-read pieces in my library. Sadly, since the release of the T2 Ultimate Edition DVD (available at www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004TRD8/qid=1093648760/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl74/002-5381946-8604012?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846) which contains just about every behind-the-scenes and special-effects breakdown on the movie you can imagine, this book has fallen into disuse. But, with the possibility that there's someone out there who might be interested in what's contained between the covers of this tome-- and me bein' geeky enough to review a 'Terminator'-related item as a way to celebrate 'Judgment Day' (August 29)-- I figure I might as well go for it...

Within the book's 116 pages is the account of the conception, preproduction, location filming, special effects, and other behind-the-scenes moments in the making of one of the most anticipated flicks to come down the pike over the last couple decades. Included are a couple Q&As with co-writer/director James Cameron, who discusses his vision, the message and meanings he put into the film, and the general story he wanted to tell to the viewing audience. He also discusses the grueling schedule, which allowed only 18 months for him and co-writer William Wisher to come up with a screenplay, film the movie, and finish it for a Summer 1991 release. Also talked about were the T-1000 computer effects that would eventually evolve into the CGI-effects-heavy fare that we see a lot of nowadays, but were relatively fresh, new, and exciting to watch back in the day. Also covered was the casting of new parts (e.g. Edward Furlong as young John Connor and Robert Patrick as the T-1000 "cop"), what scenes had to be cut from the movie to get the running time down, what scenes were never filmed for being prohibitively expensive, and other things. And, being a fairly effects-heavy movie, the book also goes into the various special and visual FX that you see on the screen, including 4-Ward's work on the nuclear holocaust scenes, Fantasy II's work on the hunter-killer vehicles in the future war sequences, and Stan Winston's makeup and appliance work.

Being one who likes to take a peek "behind the curtain" to see how they did some effect or stunt or another in movies and TV shows, I rather enjoyed reading this particular tome. While it does go into decent detail about how certain things were done and why it was done this way instead of that way, they didn't make the info too dry or boringly exhaustive. I also found it a pretty fast read; I managed to zip right through this in just under an hour. Which left me enough time to go out and have a bit of a social life. I might be a big geekin' fanboy after all, but at least I try to get in a bit of interaction with my fellow humans every once in a while...

    Book Description

Made on a low budget, The Terminator was one of the most influential films of the 1980s. Combining explosive special effects and an intricate time-travel plot, it set Arnold Schwarzenegger on the road to superstardom and allowed its director, James Cameron, to go on to make some of the most expensive films of all time. Resolutely populist, accomplished, and instantly memorable, The Terminator has dramatically outlived its humble beginnings.
Sean French places The Terminator in the context of the exploitation films in which both Cameron and Schwarzenegger learnt their craft. French discusses the making of the film, its sources, and the extent of its influence. He argues that The Terminator's visual flair, stylized acting, and choreographed violence are so compelling not so much because they offer intellectual rewards but because they traffic in the darker, more visceral pleasures of movie-going.

    5 out of 5 stars Appropriate Response.......2002-08-05

This was a very good look at "The Terminator." It covers issues such as the debt to Harlan Ellison, the image of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and how the violence and anti-social nature of the original movie were sanitized in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." There is a fascinating discussion on why the audience responds to the villain in "Terminator" and not the hero (Michael Biehn), and the analysis of the scenes of the film and their duration is quite interesting.

In short, this book takes its topic seriously and addresses issues that previous articles I had seen on "The Terminator" hadn't really raised.

The "Appropriate Response" to this book by people who enjoyed the movie is to buy it.

    4 out of 5 stars Swift.......2000-06-27

Whereas many of the BFI film guides descend into realms of film-school arsiness (literally so in the case of Michael Rogin's semi-classic 'Independence Day'), this is a refreshingly straightforward collection of trivia and informed commentary on 'The Terminator', and probably the best that is likely to appear. Given that 'The Terminator' was produced quickly on a low budget, and that not much was expected of it, no records were kept of the filming, and there really isn't much to write about the making of the film itself. Rather, the author takes us through the film, pointing out the clever bits, and writing about them. It's almost as spartan and efficient as the film itself - you'll probably finish it in half an hour, and wish that it was longer.

    2 out of 5 stars Terminate it........2000-02-26

To be fair, I may have got the wrong end of the stick, or expected too much - but with such a high regard in the realm of Sci-Fi, I would expect anyone to come away thinking that this book should have covered better issues.
