4 out of 5 stars A snapshot of the oldest continuous civilization in Europe.......2006-07-28

The Basque people are certainly an interesting race; it is believed that theirs is one of the oldest languages in Europe. Where they came from and how they ended up in northern Spain has been a point of contention between anthropologists for some time. They suffered terribly during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's; the famous painting by Picasso represents some of the suffering in the Basque city of Guernica. The people of that city had the dubious distinction of being the first in history to have been the victims of the deliberate terror bombing of civilians. The Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or ETA has been engaged in a decade's long struggle to create an independent homeland for the Basque people out of the Basque areas in Spain and France.
This book is a collection of photos taken in the Basque regions in Spain and France. It is a rugged, yet beautiful land; most of the buildings are very old. While there are some modern devices displayed in the pictures, the majority could have been taken decades ago and some perhaps over a century ago. People are meeting over drinks, coffee and traditional food. Some of the beautiful pictures of the villages in the valleys could have been taken at the turn of the century.
When people appear in the photo, one thing is clear. The Basques are a very proud people, they have lived on and worked their land for centuries and will continue to do so. Rugged mountains and terrain breeds rugged, hardy people and that certainly describes the Basques. No small set of photographs with associated explanations in a book can truly describe any culture, especially one this old. However, it can both literally and figuratively give you a snapshot and that is done very well in this book.

5 out of 5 stars "The time between dogs and wolves".......2001-05-12

"A Time We Knew: Images of Yesterday in the Basque Homeland" is the product of a fascinating collaboration between photographer William Albert Allard and the dean of Basque-American literature, Robert Laxalt.

In the fall of 1967, Allard spent two months in the Basque country of northeastern Spain and southwestern France, capturing with his camera the everyday life of the people who lived there. Although Allard spoke no Basque and was linked to the Basque country only through his Basque wife, his stunning photos evoke the tremendous power of the Basque landscape and people: the haunting flanks of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques at evening; the gloomy mountains of the northern coast of Spain just at the approach of a storm; a rough-hewn woman with a scythe at Behorleguy, on the frontier between youth and age, in whose face is reflected the painful past of the ancient Basque people. From a technical point-of-view, these incredible photographs are so good that they could truly be "images of yesterday": the color is brilliant. Alas, though, "yesterday" in the Basque country is no more. The years since 1967 have seen the heavy industrialization of both the French and Spanish sectors of the Basque homeland and the gradual passing of the ancient ways Allard captures here.

Laxalt's contribution to this book is his prose vignettes, some of the best of his characteristically exquisite prose-poetry. A second-generation Basque-American whose father grew up in the French Basque country, Laxalt knows the region as well as probably anyone in the United States. While one cannot miss the heavy dose of romanticism in his prose ("Girls slender as reeds walking hand in hand down the lane, singing an ode to spring in soprano voices pure and light as air") and even pastoralism (exacerbated by the fact that the Basques are some of the world's greatest shepherds), it is obvious that Laxalt is a remarkable writer.

A poetic look at "yesterday" in the Basque country. Get it on your shelf.

If you're a fan of these books than you have to read The Trolley to Yesterday. It is one of the best of the Johnny Dixon books.
I read these books when I was in elementary and middle school. Sometimes I even go back and reread this one to just remember. This is a great series for young readers.
I loved it and I think you will too.

5 out of 5 stars A great read from one of my favorite childhood authors!.......2006-06-27

I am in the process of collecting all of John Bellairs books because I loved them so much when I was younger. I just finished reading this one as I added it to my collection and I was reminded of how great of an author John Bellairs was. I think every child should give his books a chance because I'm sure they will get hooked on reading for life!

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2004-06-23

"The Trolley to Yesturday" was very well done but once the plot starts to develop and they trapped in 1453 everything that can go wrong seems to go wrong. They are very smart characters and pass many tests but sometimes seem to lack a little common sence. I could be wrong but either way this book is still very enjoyable. Although it is not really one of those books that you can NEVER put down it still offers very much. Once again Bellairs writes another good book.

5 out of 5 stars Bellairs' most ambitious novel........2004-01-21

Well, Johnny, Fergie, and the Prof are back at it again. Only this time their adventure lies on another continent, in another century.

This is John Bellairs at his absolute peak of creative ability. The cast of characters ranges from an amusing, tongue-in-cheek ancient Egyptian god (in the form of a floating bird statue of course), and an inventor who's harebrained schemes rival that of the professor's, to the more frightening gothic images of medieval ghosts, and talking stone heads. The locations are more exotic than ever before. And the fact that the main characters find themselves in the middle of the Ottoman Turkish siege of Constantinople, lends itself to a great deal of drama almost by default.

True, Bellairs asks the reader to suspend their disbelief a little more than ususal, (I mean, how likely is time travel in an old trolley?) but the rewards are even greater than normal.

The most different, and also the best of the John Bellairs collection.

4 out of 5 stars Back through time.......2003-04-08

Time travel in fantasy is now such a cliche that it's a bit hard to write anything original about it. But John Bellairs managed. "Trolley to Yesterday" has a bunch of intriguing twists and unexpected events, and while it doesn't have as much supernatural content, it still is an enjoyable read.

Professor Childermass is acting even more oddly than usual, which is saying something. When Fergie and Johnny try to investigate his weird behavior (including sand on his carpet and talking to himself), they find the professor having a conversation with Brewster, a magical Egyptian statue. He admits his secret: Behind a bricked-up wall is a time-travelling trolley. And the boys hitch a ride when Childermass travels back in time to save the city of Constantinople from invasion.

The problem? They arrive a little too late, and the city is being overrun by Turkish soldiers. As they struggle to make their way back to the trolley and the safety of the future, they encounter the trolley's creator (who accidently got left behind during one of its previous excursions), a deranged monk, and a group of ghostly Crusaders. But then Johnny is poisoned, and the only cure means going back to Constantinople -- and back into danger.

Usually time travel books are full of cliches, and this one has a few, but you probably won't notice them. Kids who read this book may become interested in the Byzantine Empire -- while Bellairs doesn't present huge amounts of historical detail, he gives enough to be very, very interesting. (There's also a dash of Egyptian stuff too) There's adventure, humor and the odd way of getting around.

Johnny and Fergie remain the surprisingly courageous duo of previous books, the shy boy and his brasher, jokier pal. Professor Childermass is crusty, sometimes a bit irrational, but very lovable. And Brewster (a deity of Upper and Lower Egypt) really steals the show with his dry little comments. .

This book proably has one of the lowest amounts of supernatural stuff of Bellairs' books. Certainly it doesn't have much in the way of horror. But there is a great twist about halfway through, where our heroes are aided by a group of ghostly Crusaders, who are trying to make amends for sacking the city centuries before. I suppose Brewster technically counts as supernatural, and he provides a lot of the humor (such as translating a Turkish soldier's words as "Butter and eggs, and a pound of cheese!").

"Trolley To Yesterday" isn't Bellairs' best novel, but it is an intriguing and informative historical book that adults may enjoy as well, especially if they're Byzantine buffs. Good fun.

    5 out of 5 stars Follow-up to Yesterday's Son.......2007-01-04

Spock had traveled back in time in one of the classic episodes and met Zarabeth, a beautiful young woman who had been exiled to her planet's Ice Age. As a result of their romance Zar was born. Spock's discovery of his son and their meeting was the subject of YESTERDAY'S SON. As TIME FOR YESTERDAY opens Zar is preparing for battle, a battle that he knows will probably be his last. On the Enterprise other problems are appearing, problems that will ultimately lead Spock and his son to meet again at the Guardian of Forever.

This is an excellent follow-up to YESTERDAY'S SON. In many ways it is the stronger novel of the two. The relationship between Zar and Spock is handled better, the characterization of Spock is more in keeping with other works, both the classic episodes and other novels. The situations described are handled well, and are quite interesting. It would, however, be necessary to have seen the original classic episodes and read YESTERDAY'S SON in order to fully appreciate this novel.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2004-12-25

this is another one of my fave books. Truly delves so much better in the relationship of Zar and who he is and his relationship with Spock then Yesterday's Son did. Shows really how both have grown and accepted who they are...it is a must read, especially if you are a fan of Spock

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2003-11-21

I read this Star Trek novel in response to the tremendous "hype" that I had seen regarding both this novel and its prequel "Yesterday's Son."

I have to say that both novels live up to their reputations as some of the best Star Trek fiction you'll find in print.

Both stories are well written and well structured. The author's understanding of and affection for the characters and her dedication to the subject matter permeate both texts providing the reader with a very special experience.

4 out of 5 stars Good story, if a bit fannish..........2003-08-17

Back in the day, you often saw a variety of tales told in the Trek universe as Paramount Pictures didn't have as strong a hold on the series as they do now. As a result, you saw some fantastic (and I mean wild) stories being told. Here is one that while not so wild, falls easily into the fannish aspect, bringing up a "What If?" that fans have often wondered about. I doubt it would get produced today. The story telling is very good, with solid characterization. This is one story for the true fan, but not the casual reader of the series.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnificent !.......2003-05-26

Just finished reading this book. Words cannot express how much I enjoyed/loved it! Without giving away too much - the interaction between Spock and his son was wonderful and brought tears to my eyes more than once. Additionally, oft times a book will end too abruptly leaving me wanting more - or too slowly leaving me wanting to get to the end. This book's end was perfect!

      Book Description

Yesterday: The Beatles Once Upon A Time documents the Beatles and the city of their birth during the making of their first film, A Hard Day's Night, in 1964. It captures the rhythm and texture of the tough English port city where the smell of cigarettes and seawater mingled and the strains of pop music were transformed by an early 1960s music scene that gave birth to the Mersey Beat and the greatest band of all time.

Before they achieved world fame, the Beatles perfected their craft in another port of call, the northern German city of Hamburg. There they met Astrid Kirchherr, a budding photographer who became close friends with the band and later was engaged to the Beatles' original bass player, Stuart Sutcliffe. Some four years later—by which time the Beatles had conquered the world—Kirchherr with Max Scheler visited the band and took the photographs that appear in this book. Kirchherr and Scheler focused on the Beatles in private and public moments, during the filming, and also on the city itself, on the streets, the music scene, the people, evoking for us today the gritty humor and passion of 1960s Liverpudlians.

This book offers a moving testament to the inspirational effect of the Beatles' success on their hometown as well as an important chapter of the Beatles' almost- mythic story.

        Book Description

Sometimes our understanding of our universe is given a huge boost by one insightful thinker. Such a boost came in the first half of the twentieth century, when an obscure Belgian priest put his mind to deciphering the nature of the cosmos.

Is the universe evolving to some unforeseen end, or is it static, as the Greeks believed? The debate has preoccupied thinkers from Heraclitus to the author of the Upanishads, from the Mayans to Einstein. The Day Without Yesterday covers the modern history of an evolving universe, and how Georges Lemaitre convinced a generation of thinkers to embrace the notion of cosmic expansion and the theory that this expansion could be traced backward to the cosmic origins, a starting point for space and time that Lemaitre called "the day without yesterday."

Lemaitre’s skill with mathematics and the equations of relativity enabled him to think much more broadly about cosmology than anyone else at the time, including Einstein. Lemaitre proposed the expanding model of the universe to Einstein, who rejected it. Had Einstein followed Lemaitre’s thinking, he could have predicted the expansion of the universe more than a decade before it was actually discovered.

        4 out of 5 stars On Farrell's Universe.......2007-01-10

Being undoubtedly a book on History of Science, "The Day without Yesterday" is narrated in such a delightful way that on reading it one feels like going through a very fine story, almost a novel.

In his book, John Farrel places the "obscure" Belgian priest Georges Lemaître in the place he deserves in concern with the make up the Primeval Atom model of the Universe, which turns out to be Big Bang theory. This is also true with respect to the so well known Albert Einstein and also to all the others who contributed to the development of today's cosmological theories. For instance, in page 98 one can read Hubble's law might just as easily have been called Lemaître's law, since Lemaître, although under much more theoretical terms, had proposed an equivalent velocity-distance relationship two years earlier than Hubble.

Elaborated equations or heavy scientific arguments are not presented in this book, which makes it highly recommendable for anyone who is not a specialist but interested in understanding modern cosmology. Several elucidative notes and a glossary of specific terms, as well as a list of commented bibliography, are very helpful for those who may find some difficulty in dominating the inherent scientific language.

Unfortunately, a few details are not strictly accurate, but surely neither they interfere with the historic and scientific coherence of the book nor do they diminish its outstanding value as a source of pleasurable reading.

I looked forward tremendously to this book because of my interest in the history of the evolution of the idea of the "big bang". Surely, the "big bang" was as great an event intellectually as it was physically.
There is much to commend in Farrell's collection of innocent facts in this book, but it is seriously marred by the sloppiest scholarship I have ever encountered. Viz., on p. 69 Farrell knowingly speaks of "Alfred North" Russell, whom he later describes as codeveloper of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Words fail.
Again,on page 76 he gives the EFE and claims that the terms are summed over indices, which they are clearly not.

3 out of 5 stars A start, but by no means definitive.......2006-06-26

I checked this book out from the library in hopes of learning more about Lemaitre, and up to a point I was satisfied. Certainly, there is more biographical information about the man than I have seen elsewhere, and there were interesting sidelights about Eddington and Gamow. However, this is in no way a definitive biography, and as mentioned by at least one other reviewer, the explanations of cosmological models given are quite inadequate and downright confusing at times. This whets the appetite but does not satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and informative.......2006-02-01

This book was a joy to read. I'm an astrophysicist who does a lot of work with general relativity, and I had absolutely no clue how deep and important the contributions of Lemaitre are to my own field! What was particularly fascinating for me to see was how deeply Lemaitre's thinking was driven by data and observations. Over much of its history, general relativity has been a rather mathematical subfield of physics; it is taught in math departments rather than physics departments in many British universities, for example. It's much more common for this data-driven thinking to be applied to work in relativity today than it was in during Lemaitre's era.

That's just one one thing that I was fascinated by. The book is extremely well written and enjoyable; I read it on my morning train commute to the office and nearly missed my stop several times. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in an in-depth biography of an underappreciated founder of modern cosmology and astrophysics.

5 out of 5 stars The Primeval Big Bang Cosmologist.......2006-01-01

Georges LemaÎtre may just be the Rodney Dangerfield of cosmology - he just can't get the respect he deserves [in the book I'm currently reading, it says "Modern cosmology is based on the big bang theory proposed by George Gamow..."]. _The Day Without Yesterday_ by John Farrell goes a long way towards making the case that Georges LemaÎtre should at the least share the title of the Father of Modern Cosmology. In the book, we follow the trajectory of the life of Fra Georges LemaÎtre, priest, mathematician, and physicist, played out against the first 2/3rds of history of the 20th Century and the history of modern cosmology. We learn of LemaÎtre's "primeval atom" - the original version of the big bang - and his interactions [or lack thereof] with Einstein, Hubble, Gamow and others. I am pleased to report that LemaÎtre lived long enough to hear about the discovery of the cosmic background radiation and the vindication of the big bang. LemaÎtre is a good example of the fact that religion and science need not conflict. I highly recommend this fine book to fans of biography and the history of science.

5 out of 5 stars THE guide for fans of old radio........2005-11-23

Lately, there have been a rash of good books on the subject of Old Time Radio (THE GREAT AMERICAN BROADCAST by Leonard Maltin, for example) but nothing beats this exhaustive guide to the classic (and not-so-classic) radio shows of yesteryear. With each title arranged in alphabetical order, the novice can quickly turn to, say, FIBBER MCGREE AND MOLLY, and read an informative overview of the show's history and appeal. The readabilty and breath of knowledge of this volume is fantastic. While out of print (my copy has been by my side since '77), if you're a fan of a time when radio was truely the "theatre of the mind," this book is well worth searching out.

My daughter saw this book when visiting me. We are both nostalgia buffs. I sent her a copy of her own, and she was very pleased. Unfortunately the book seems out of print and is only available used.

        5 out of 5 stars A Sweet, Enchanting Romance.......2003-03-16

I must start by saying I don't normally like time travel books but I picked this book because it sounded interesting. I was not disappointed.

This is the story of Barrett Overbrook. She is at a point in her life where she isn't exactly happy being. She drives to a bed and breakfast where her life changes completely. She falls asleep and wakes up giving birth in the 1880's! She also discovers she's married and has a biracial brother-in-law.

This story was romantic, funny and sweet! Barrett, a.k.a. Elizabeth, is funny trying to adjust to the new time she is in. She slips up and says the funniest things for the time period she is in. Her husband, Chase, doesn't understand the drastic changes in his wife. The stiff, formal Elizabeth has undergone a dramatic change during childbirth. She is a completely different person. Barrett, during a conversation with her guardian angel Mr. Gideon, discovers she has been brought back in time and is stuck there until she learns to love and accepts love. Her feelings toward Mr. Gideon are quite hilarious.

I can't express enough how much I loved this book. The storyline was wonderful. The characters were well developed and seemed real. Chase was a great character. The character of Wes seemed to really add to the story. Mr. Gideon added to the story also. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next and read this book in one day. The story was written so well that there were not any dull periods in it. It read smoothly from one chapter to the next and was just an all around great read. This is a feel good story. A keeper for anyones library.

        3 out of 5 stars a very sweet book.......2002-04-16

This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it. I was able to read it all in one day and I had to work today too. Its an easy read and made my day brighter.

This is a time travel book where the heroine, a modern woman named Barrett, meets up with her guardian angel Gideon. Gideon sees that her life is very unfullfilling. She has never known love even from her family and he decides there is only one way to show what love is. Send her back in time to 1887. She arrives in the body of a woman named Elizabeth who is giving birth. What an entrance. Elizabeth's husband and half brother are attending her. They can't quite figure out how the prim, proper, and very unassuming Elizabeth has sudden turned into this vocal, independant self assured woman who demand to be Barrett. Barrett has no clue as to how she has arrived. she thinks its a bad dream. She soon discovers though that its all real and she now has a baby and a angry and remote husband to deal with.

Over time she becomes adjusted to her new life and longs to have a real relationship with Chase, her husband. But something she knows nothing about stands in the way. Chase is confused and still hurt by past events but cannot deny the strong feelings he has for Barrett.

This is a sweet story with wonderful secondary characters. I will have to read more from this author.

2 out of 5 stars The Devil is in the Details.......2001-09-18

When reading a story, I understand many look for realistic details to make them feel a part of the characters. Waiting For Yesterday certainly is long on details. In my opinion, the author could have left out the unsavory descriptions of childbirth(a man's hand shoved up into the heroine's uterus), the disgusting vivid account of breast engorgement(and breast milk shooting across the room), baby biological functions(specifically descriptions of feces being smeared on the heroine). I could go on, but I'm sure by now you get the picture.

If it weren't for the unnecessary descriptions, which fill an abundance of pages in this book, the story could have been enjoyed more. I do admit to finishing the book, due to interest in how Barrett, the main character, would choose her fate.

Normally, I would give a short detailed description of the overall story, but I won't bother this time since I sincerely suggest spending your reading entertainment dollars on a different book!

        4 out of 5 stars Tinker Belle.......2000-12-23

This book was wonderful. Most time travel just sorta have the people show up. They never seem confused or concerned. They act like it's an everyday occurence. Ms Lykins gives a whole new meaning to the word time travel. They are very innovative and the people in her stories act confused, concerned and scared. They pull from an inner strength they never realized they possesed to deal with the situation. If you enjoy time travel and a good love story, you'll love any of Ms. Lykins books.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book!.......2000-07-06

This was one of the most unusual time travels I've ever read. I really enjoyed the method of travel as well as the twin storyline. I've researched this time period extensively, and I can say the author pulled me into the story with her convincing setting and wonderful plot. I highly recommend this book.
