Book Description

They dared to risk it all in a skiff of reeds or leather, on a ship of wood or steel, knowing the only thing between them and certain death was their ship. To explore, to seek out what lay beyond the close and comfortable, every explorer had to embrace danger. And as they did so, what arose was a mystical bond, a passion for the ships that carried them. From the very first time humans dared to warp the fabric of space, escaping from the ashes of the third World War, they also created ships. These vessels have become the icons of mankind's desire to rise above the everyday, to seek out and make the unknown known. And these ships that travel the stellar seas have stirred the same passions as the ones that floated in the oceans.

While every captain has wished that their starship could be outfitted in the same manner as the sailing ship H.M.S. Beagle -- without weapons -- that proved

untenable. From the start, Starfleet realized that each vessel, due to the limited range of the early warp engines, must be able to stand alone against any

attack. Thus arose the idea, taken from the days of wooden sailing ships, that every Starfleet vessel must stand as a ship of the line. Through the actions of their captains and crews, countless starships have taken on that role. Here we remember some of those ships and their heroic crews.

In celebration of the fortieth anniversary of Star Trek, here for the very first time collected together are the spectacular images from the highly successful and acclaimed Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendars. Gloriously rendered, each of these illustrations was created exclusively for Pocket Books. With text by Michael Okuda (The Star Trek Encyclopedia), the story of each of these valiant starships comes to life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those who love Star Trek ships..........2007-09-22

I've been a fan of the "Ships of the Line" calendars for many years. This book is essentially a compilation of those stunning images, with some explanatory captions added. As such, it's a wonderful volume for any Star Trek fan who enjoys "beauty shots" of the various ships shown in the series. It should be noted, however, that these are pieces of original digital artwork. They are not screen captures of the various series or movies, but unique images created for the calendar series (and now, for this book). It was a great value and an excellent addition to my Star Trek book collection.

4 out of 5 stars Ships of the Line (Star Trek) .......2007-09-21

Ships of the Line (Star Trek)was not what I was expecting. I was hoping for a more techincal review of the fleet.

With that said, the artwork was great, although I would have liked more on the ships other than that bad 'Enterprise' series!

The Romulan Warbird was the best pic, in my opinion!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book--but know what you're getting........2007-09-19

This is a beautiful, imagination-stimulating, sometimes breathtaking book. But potential buyers should know three things: 1. This book is about half the size of the average coffee table book (FYI, in case you don't read the fine print or easily "get" measurements in the Product Description), so they are not big pictures. 2. This is an *art* book; these are "illustrations," not photographic reproductions from the Star Trek T.V. series(s) or movies. I wasn't familiar with the "Ships of the Line" calendars, so was expecting "real" photos of the Star Trek ships, not paintings. However, some of the pictures are computer-design artwork that very effectively look like photographs. I know it's a matter of taste, by I find these more enjoyable, more evocative.
3. While ships from all five of the T.V. shows are included (not the animated ST), there is of course a favored emphasis on the Enterprise in its various/successive generations. There are only 37 illustrations, so that doesn't leave room for a whole lot else. (Opposing/even-numbered pages are blank, except for a short paragraph of text by official Star Trek history guru Michael Ocuda, which offers interesting commentary, though more impressionistic thatn encyclopedic.) Also, the book's cover illustration is not repeated in the book, so if you get a torn or badly smudged copy, you're out of luck. I was also disappointed that a book called "Ships of the Line" didn't have a single schematic drawing or even a comparative illustration to scale of the various ships (like is sort of done on the cover picture).
Even given all these qualifications, there are at least 10 pictures in this book that really inspire me and excite my imagination; and any two of them, for me, are worth the price of the book.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-09-04

Great art work, but I was expecting the entire book to give us a complete look at rarely or never before seen star fleet ships in various situations. There was a limited look, but mostly that of the series ships we're already quite familiar with. I wasn't too thrilled about the blank left pages as well. Lots of potential for a great coffee table top book. Hopefully we'll get more in a Volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Star Trek Photo Book.......2007-08-12

Margaret Clark & Doug Drexler have out done themselfs. This book is packed full of some of the best CGI graphics yet to be published. It's a must for any trekie as it will keep you spell bound just looking at page after page. The book covers all era's of trekdom with graphics of all the major ships we've come to love. It even has a few hints of things to come. The book is graphic intense with very little story, but that ok because some of the graphic will have you beliving that these ship are real. The only short side to this book is it's lack of alein ships as it's cover suggests. There are some aliens ship but none are the focal point of any of the graphics. All in all I would highly recommend this book for anyones library.

Book Description

The twelve billion dollar cruise-ship industry caters to 10 million Americans annually on six- hundred million dollar floating cities.

In this terrifically entertaining history, Kristoffer A. Garin chronicles the cruise-ship industry, from its rise in the early sixties, to its explosion in the seventies with the hit show The Love Boat, to the current vicious consolidation wars and brazen tax dodges. Entrepreneurial genius and bare-knuckle capitalism mate with cultural kitsch as the cruise lines dodge U.S. tax, labor, and environmental laws to make unimaginable profits while bringing the world a new form of leisure.

A colorful and compelling behind-the-scenes narrative, Devils on the Deep Blue Sea is a definitive look at the industry and its robber barons who created floating empires.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Perspective on the Cruise Business.......2007-09-17

I found this book to be a very enjoyable read. It takes you beyond the marketing collateral of the cruise lines to the full story behind the industry's birth and development. The book is a wonderful narrative of the industry's short and eventful life. The author is fairly even handed in his treatment but there are times when you can sense when he likes or dislikes his subjects.

The author's assessment of the cruise line labor policies, environmental record and negotiation with Caribbean Governments was slanted. His view comes off as wanting the cruise lines to be vehicles of social change rather than commercial enterprises. I think he fairly criticizes the cruise lines for not living up to their environmental rhetoric but if the labor conditions are so bad onboard the ships, why are the positions so prized? If the Caribbean Governments are being abused so badly in their deals with the cruise lines, why do they continue to build larger piers to accomodate more ships?

The best parts of this book deal with the business deals that created the cruise industry and the characters that were involved. I have cruised for years and reading this book gave me a better perspective on the strategies and coincidences that shaped the industry. A good read!

4 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-05-27

Travel agents and veteran cruisers alike will get a big kick out of this book.

It's a behind the scenes look that pulls no punches but manages to remain affectionate. Garin simply proves that you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. I certainly hope it doesn't discourage any non-cruisers from taking the plunge.

My favorite bit: Carnival's Meshulam Zonis' line, "A passenger is like a wet towel," which he illustrated by hand motions that wordlessly said, "First we squeeze them this way, then we squeeze them that way."

5 out of 5 stars War ships/tankers to cruise ships....Oh My!!!.......2007-04-25

In the first chapter, Garin writes of the last day on a cruise ship which any cruiser knows is every man, woman and child for themselves....no longer are passengers royalty but more like refugees! He captures the irony of the debarking day that has always made my family chuckle as we tell stories of things we see on that last day! E.g. one poor passenger's luggage broke open outside an elevator...not one steward or other crew member offered assistance....they walked right over his strewn belongings. Anyway, Garin knows cruises and gives a wonderful history of the makings/history of the cruise industry from its humble beginnings to the big business it is today (and the two major cruise lines left). I was particularly fascinated with the evolution of the ships themselves! This was an easy read (and if a portion got dry....I skimmed!). I am cruising in 17 days...will do so with even more appreciation for the experience!

5 out of 5 stars If your cruise reservation is non-refundable...don't read this book.......2007-02-06

I picked this up after enjoying his Harper's article "On the great Ukrainian bride hunt". His writing style and my interest in critical looks at the evolution and externalities of specific industries (a la Fast Food Nation) made this an amusing & informative read. And the long odds that I'd ever go on a cruise got even longer.

4 out of 5 stars An even treatment with a fascinating storyline..........2006-09-03

Being a vacationer who has been on numerous cruises, this book recommendation looked like a certain fit... Devils On The Deep Blue Sea by Kristoffer A. Garin. He does a very good job in revealing how the cruise industry works, and the forces that have shaped it along the way.

The story starts in the late 1950's, when the cruise industry was really nothing more than a way to transport passengers from one location to another. The rich often had a lavish experience, while the "steerage" passengers were cramped and confined to the lower decks with restrictions on where they could go and what they could do. But in both cases, it was still a case of traveling from point A to point B. The airline industry quickly made cruise ships obsolete for rapid travel, and the shipping lines were becoming a footnote in history. But a few people thought that cruising could become a destination in itself, a way to vacation, see other lands, and then return to where you started. But the appeal had to be broad, and the luxuries of first class had to extend to all the passengers. Thru visionaries, financial risks, and mergers, what we have today is a $13 billion dollar industry that is truly global in numerous aspects. But behind the glitter and glamour, there are some less appealing items of interest...

Garin talks about how the cruise industry is largely staffed by impoverished workers from third-world nations who sign on for low base wages and whatever tips come from passengers. To many of us, these base wages wouldn't even support poverty, but they are considerable in the countries where the workers come from. The hours and rules aboard ship are harsh, with 12 to 16 hour days with little time off the norm. The industry also pays little in the way of taxes due to their ship registration being out of country to take advantage of international treaties preventing retaliatory fees. The laws and rights of the United States are not always in play either, as the ship is actually foreign territory. And if that's not enough, many of the tourist destinations are unable to get additional fees from the industry to support their infrastructure, as the industry will threaten to pull out of the port and destroy their tourism. It can be capitalism at its worst...

Personally, this book was better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a muck-raking, "boycott cruises" diatribe, and one that I wouldn't necessarily agree with. But the balance between the story of the cruise lines and the less-savory parts of the industry was just about right. And even the "expose" part wasn't hypercritical. I came away understanding the abuses, but (in many cases) understanding both sides of the issues. And really, it's not much different than what most other industries would do in the same circumstances...

Yes, I'm still going to go on cruises, and I'll still enjoy them. But I'll be even more considerate of the staff that makes it all work, and more in awe of what it takes to pull off the experience, week after week after week...

Book Description

This sixth installment in C. S. Forester's eleven-volume chronicle of Horatio Hornblower places the captain in the gravest danger yet.

The time is May, 1810, deep into the Napoleonic Wars. Hornblower, newly in command of his first ship of the line is on his way to Spain with a ragtag, brutish crew. All their seamanship and all of Hornblower's ingenuity are demanded when the "Sutherland" takes on four French men-of-war.

"Exciting, realistic, packed with grand naval action." (The New Yorker)

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Friendship .......2006-09-09

This is the next Hornblower chronologically, it was not the next one written. Now that the series is completed it makes sense to read it as Hornblower's career progresses in the Royal Navy.

The whole series is a pleasure to read full of action and adventure; with enough time for a little romance.

Get acquainted with one of the most popular characters in modern literature.

After reading this you will be back for more. And that is a wonderful thing.

4 out of 5 stars Action-filled adventure in the Mediterranean.......2006-04-23

"Ship of the Line" was the second story written in C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series. As the name implies, Captain Hornblower has command of the ship of the line in this book set during the Napoleonic Wars. Although his ship of the line is an old, unweatherly 74, Hornblower successfully takes her on a cruise off the French and Spanish Mediterranean coast. This book features great naval action, including cutting-out expeditions and a lively

This was the second Horatio Hornblower book that I read, although I had seen the A&E TV series. As a devotee of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, I was pleasantly surprised with this Hornblower book and I found Hornblower a much more authentic character than the superman of the TV series. Still, it is hard for me not to compare Hornblower with Captain Aubrey: although I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I find Aubrey a much more fun and likable character than Hornblower. Hornblower is a much more serious and deep character who is driven by self-doubt.

This is a very good book, and I recommend it to anyone with an interest in naval warfare or historical fiction. It is an action-filledt account of naval life and warfare during the Napoleonic era. C.S. Forester started a genre with Horatio Hornblower, and this book is packed with action and adventure.

4 out of 5 stars ENDS ON CLIFFHANGAR.......2004-12-07

Excellent book. But just remember...BUY FLYING COLOURS AS WELL. This book ends on a cliffhangar that you cannot concentrate on DeCartes' theorems in class because you are aching to know what will happen next.

This books completely set the stage for the internally-evntful FLYING COLOURS, especially with the frequent haunting memories of young Horatio. Full of foreshadowing, we cannot help but pity our Captain as he hits rock bottom after so much good luck.

Makes ya wonder why everything HAD to happen to him. *sad*

5 out of 5 stars You feel like you're walking the deck........2004-02-27

After returning home from a very successful voyage to the Americas Captain Hornblower is assigned to a larger ship of the line with two gun decks, the Sutherland. He is assigned to the fleet blockading the Mediterranean coast of Spain where Napoleon's French fleet and the Spanish navy are prevented from supplying Napoleon's armies. In classic Hornblower style Hornblower isn't content to sail idly back and forth, so he finds ways to attack harbors, canals, and a French army near the shore. After several courageous engagements Hornblower becomes the only English ship between 4 enemy vessels and their safe harbor. The remainder of the English fleet is over the horizon, several hours away under sail in light winds. Following orders from the fleet Admiral Hornblower attacks all four, severely damaging three of them before the superior weight of the more numerous enemy fleet renders his ship useless. The wreckage drifts down current into the lee shore and a Spanish harbor where Hornblower is captured. As usual, Hornblower is filled with self doubts. If he ever escapes will he be stripped of his rank or even hanged for losing his ship? Will he ever see his beloved Barbara, wife of the Admiral, again? The detail of ships and sailing in the early 19th century make the Hornblower series must reading for any man who loves the sea.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars -- Fantastic!.......2003-06-10

Ship of the Line is one of the highpoints of the Horatio Hornblower series -- a dazzling adventure built around three-dimensional characters that will have you running to the store to buy the sequel. Do yourself a favor and buy Flying Colours when you buy this one. Otherwise, you'll go crazy waiting to see what happens next.

Hornblower, flesh off his triumph in the Pacific, is now assigned to the least desireable two-deck ship of the line, the Sutherland, with only half the crew he needs. Worse yet, he's assigned to duty under Admiral Leighton -- an inexperienced, over-cautious and frankly incompetent commander who also happens to have married the love of Hornblower's life -- Barbara Wellsley.

Will Hornblower overcome these obstacles? You haven't been paying attention if you don't the answer to that already. He quickly becomes the "Terror of the Mediterranean", leading brilliant daring raids against the French on the coast of Spain and finally ending in a stunning battle against four French ships that is possibly the exciting, most heart-rending and most terrifying battle sequence Forester ever wrote. It perfectly capture both the excitement and the horror of warfare.

As usual, it the character of Horatio that elevates this novel from historical drama to classic adventure. He in introspective and moody, intelligent enough to be scared of battle but brave enough to face his fears. He also represents the spirit of the Enlightenment in his disdain for the aristocracy and his belief that his men will fight better if they love him than fear him.

This ranks with Hotspur as the pinnacle of the series. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was the occasional confusion over events and (wait for it) lack of maps. Otherwise, this is a great story.

I cannot complain about the artwork in this calendar. It's inspirational. But the matter transport stream was obviously distorted on the way to the publisher. This calendar must be hung *SIDEWAYS* on the wall.

It is the fault of the publisher and/or Amazon for not clarifying this. Also, I have to "ditto" all the reviewers who complained about no space to write on it.

PROS: Trek art nicely done.

CONS: Must be hung sideways on the wall (widthwise / landscape). No place to scribble on the dates (although this is not entirely bad).

I wish I'd gotten the desk calendar - at least I could have made room for that.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I had hoped...........2007-02-15

Great artwork, absolutely beautiful. But not very useful as a calendar. My first time purchasing a ships of the line calendar, and my last. As much as I enjoy the beautiful artwork, I cant write anything on the calendar, and viewing Amazon's limited images of it, it was not clear ahead of time what the format would be. Not mad, but not entirely pleased either.

5 out of 5 stars Live long and prosper Star Trek Ships of the Line Series.........2007-01-26

First /Rant on..

I don't know if some of the people reviewing below have purchased the Ships of the line calendar for the first time or not however since the last 3 years or so these calendars have always been in a wide-screen "paranomic" format(the way they are supposed to be). The emphasis with this series of star trek calendars is to showcase the excellent almost movie quality art in the widest format as possible on a calendar. As a result the images nearly have a poster quality look to them and hence the 16*9 reminiscent layout. This calendar is not supposed to be used for writing stuff up as the images will loose their "epic paranomic quality" if they are in horizontal format. Go buy a $1.99 flatback calendar if you sooo need to write stuff up on your calendars but leave us trekkies alone to enjoy the star trek art the way its supposed to.

As always an excellent star trek ships of the line calendar. I have been buying these calendars since 2002. The last two calendars were tad bit disappointing as they were focused on just one series. This time around we have orginal enterpise, NX-02, NCC1701-C & E, the prototype ships shown in Voyager, the hypothetically refitted NCC-1701-C among others. The images are far better in quality than the last two years. Though bit hazy in some shots but they are more epic and action oriented than the previous two calendars. I will whole-heartedly recommend this calendar to any Trekkie or Trekker out there.

As with past ships of the line calendars this one agains adorns my office wall. I just want to make sure that no one ever forgets(atleast in my company) that I will forever be a Trekkie or Trekker no matter what.

3 out of 5 stars Not what we expected.......2007-01-22

When my husband chose this, he thought there'd be space for writing appts. and such as one would with a standard calendar. There is no space whatsoever to write any appointments, and the calendar is not even printed in a kind of useable format a human would use. Maybe it's meant for someone of another galaxy to use? It would be a lot better if it were formatted in a more traditional format, with at least it looking like a normal calendar. The pictures were lovely, though.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Calender.......2007-01-19

A very nice calender. Add a star if you're a big Star Trek fan.

Book Description

In 1871, a bright new star appeared on the Liverpool shipping scene. Like a phoenix, the White Star Line grew out of the ashes of a bankrupt sailing ship line to become the fastest-growing and most famous of all shipping companies. Their first ships set a new standard for transatlantic travel, a standard that was to remain for as long as the company existed. From Oceanic of 1871 to Georgic of 1932, there have been many ground-breaking White Star ships. The company's most famous are undoubtedly the Titanic, Olympic, and Britannic, but the other 70 ships of the line also helped the White Star become the most famous line of all time.

Book Description

In the summer of 1805 the Mediterranean Fleet made a 6,686-mile round trip to the West Indies. The Franco-Spanish fleet it was chasing buried a thousand men at Martinique, but Nelson reported his fleet 'in the most perfect health, except some symptoms of scurvy'. This was the Royal Navy standard that was maintained until Napoleon was defeated, and not surpassed until the post-modern era. Drawing extensively on previously unpublished letters, reports, court-martial records, and other contemporary RN and enemy documents, as well as published memoirs and reminiscences, the narrative uses the model of a twenty-four-hour day to show how everyone on board a ship-of-the-line contributed to this unprecedented survivability and fighting ability and reveals the organization, feeding, equipping, training, punishment, recreation, and motivation of up to 875 officers, men, and boys from all walks of life and five continents. Also explained are the roles of the non-naval personnel on board, from wives and guests to soldiers, supernumeraries, and prisoners. Appendices include complete establishments of carpenter's and boatswain's stores, the complement and pay of a ship-of-the-line, and complete listings of the ships-of-the-line 1793-1815. This is essential reading for historians, naval novel lovers, and all who have wondered how such complex communities achieved this unprecedented efficiency.

4 out of 5 stars Familiar ground.......2007-01-11

This book covers ground familiar to sea-story readers, but does it with an interesting twist. The ship is imaginary, but typical, with the events of a routine day covered from a to z (or 4 AM to 4 AM). It is well done, and will be of particular interest to beginners in the field.

5 out of 5 stars An illuminating study of life at sea.......2006-11-20

Using a wide variety of sources including Regulations and Instructions, published memoirs, journals, and excepts from a generous list of court-martial records, the author combines this wealth of data and recorded experience to narrate one twenty-four day of a fictional 74-gun ship-of-the line, the Splendid, to illustrate the daily routine of a 74's officers and crew. The day takes place on 14 June 1810 and follows in outline the actual activities of the Conqueror (74) to Port Mahon in Minorca, tasked to resupply the Channel Fleet blockading Toulon.

Within this framework, divided into 4-hour watches, the author discusses in considerable detail the ships organisation and routine, personal attitudes, sleeping, measurement of time, washing the decks, the difficulties of washing clothes, the strong emphasis on cleanliness, drill, the sick, punishment, food and eating times, gunnery, the problem of alcohol, so that the reader learns what each section of the crew would be going during each watch.

The reader gains the strongest insights into this world through the extracts from court-martials. The author uses these to clarify the organizational structure, problems of discipline (with the trigger often being abuse of alcohol or a breach of social etiquette) and to explain exactly what happened on board ship, and often record complete conversations. In the author's words, they also help to explain "who was where, when and why - and whether they were meant to be."

Particularly interesting was how dark it was on board, even in daylight, and that most crew members lived in a world of gloom where identifying the person next to you was often very difficult.

This is a very comprehensive and exhaustive study of life at sea, full of both anecdotes and facts. Included is an inboard profile and plan map of the decks and holds of a 74, as well as lists of ships complements, slop stores, boatswain, carpenters and ordnance stores. There is a lot of jargon, but this is always in context and stimulates the reader to research further afield.

This title is thoroughly researched and written in a easily written style which uses its goldmine of factual detail very effectively to take the reader on board a '74'. I enjoyed this book very much.

Any Aubrey Maturin reader determined to learn the locations of the orlop and the mizenmast, the etiquette of epaulettes, or the range of a 32-pounder will delight in this invaluable reference companion to O'Brian's epic and series. An exploration of what daily life was like in Nelson's navy, for everyone from the captain on down to the rawest recruit. Line drawings and charts help us understand the construction and rigging of the great ships, the types and dispositions of the guns, and how they operated in battle. Contemporary drawings and cartoons illustrate aspects of naval life from the press gang to the scullery. Finally, a generous selection of full-color paintings renders the majesty and the excitement of fleet actions in the age of fighting sail.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic outline.......2006-05-05

Brief outline of main points of interest in the Royal Navy. Excellent for those who do not wish too much detail.

5 out of 5 stars Navy life for armchair voyagers.......2004-03-19

Being a known Jane Austen buff, a colleague told me I ought to have a look at Patrick O'Brian's novels which cover the same period. It has often been remarked upon that Jane Austen ignored the wars taking place during her time. In fact, she did not. Key characters such as Captain Wentworth (Persuasion) and Fanny Price's brother William (Mansfield Park), were career shipmen whose merits are well-enunciated in her novels. Two of Miss (how everyone likes to call her "Miss"!) Austen's brothers were also career navymen. The Navy was all around her and she knew it but had no need, despite that famously interpreted reference to "rears and vices," to discuss Navy life or strategy.

Nevertheless, this reader is curious to know how these men lived away from the ordered, civilised life of those "three or four families" in that country village of which Austen writes and to which these men inevitably returned to marry. Here in MEN-OF-WAR: Life in Nelson's Navy, we learn about the ships, the gunnery, the lifestyle and the protocol of the 18th century British Navy which successfully defended England from an invasion led by Napoleon.

The information in this book is concise and easily comprehensible, thanks to an economical and cheerful writing style. Information is brilliantly illustrated by color photos of paintings, drawings, cartoons and models of sailing vessels.

On a final note, there is now a wave (pun intended) of interest in Patrick O'Brian as a result of the detailed film MASTERS AND COMMANDERS. The Navy lifestyle illustrated in this book is depicted in the film, to the advantage of both.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting overview.......2000-06-02

This is a book of history-lite. Now that is not necessarily a bad thing in my view; far too many history books (& this comes from a History Major) are written by and for hyper-specialists. This book, however, hands you a lot of information quickly and in a relatively painless manner about the Royal Navy at the time of the Napoleonic Wars.

The book is divided more or less into topics, although some material "sloshes" over from chapter to chapter. The style is neither drily academic nor chatty -- it is not an ABC book, however, with definitions of every term. O'Brien assumes that you already know a little something about nautical terms and the warfare of the era.

If you are a historian, this is not such a good book -- you will not find enough footnotes or bibliographical material to follow through for further research. If you are merely into battles, again this book will be a disappointment; much like the Aubrey-Maturin books, this work is as much concerned (if not moreso) with minor details of daily life and the ins and outs of naval bureaucracy as it is about battle.

If you want to know something about the topic, this is a decent introduction.

4 out of 5 stars Good Crutch for us Landlubbers.......2000-04-01

I cannot claim to any nautical experience, however, I do claim to be one of Patrick O'Brian's all time fans. This book has helped me understand what the ____ some of the late 18th and early 19th century nautical terms and concepts mean. So, to keep this concise, if you love Patrick O'Brian's seafaring novels (start with Master and Commander if you are uninitiated to this amazing series), but are not a sailer yourself- then this is the book for you. It is fairly short, but interesting. You will be briefed on life in the navy, parts of the ships, names and functions of sails, combat, and many other topics that can confuse.

I also know that this book would serve as an excellent source for a H.S. to college level paper/presentation on life in Nelson's navy. The length and writting style make it highly readable. Also recomended are Dean King's lexicons on Patrick O'Brian's books ("A Sea of Words"). They include several sections on the history of the era, and are very interesting, as well as including an extensive dictionary of terms, old words, places and events.

If you already know a great deal about Nelson's Navy, then this might be a little too basic.

2 out of 5 stars Not for landlubbers..........2000-01-22

First off, I must say that I am a very big fan of Patrick O'Brians Aubrey/Maturin novels. It is because of them that I searched for this book. I am, as O'Brian's sailors would have it, "a daisy cutting landlubber" & the maritime terms in his books leave me lost. I hoped "Men-of-War" would help rectify this, so that I could tell a poop from a head, & a ship from a brig, but I'm still sadly confused!

Even tho "Men-of-War" is well illustrated, the captions discuss things that I still can't find in the pictures! There are diagrams of sails & decks, then the text mentions other sails (such as "studding sails") or locations on the decks that do not appear in the diagrams! Confused? You bet! About the only fact I learned from this book is that the sails could be rotated; in every other aspect I am still as "at sea" as I was before reading this.

Also, this book is very very thin. It simply isn't worth the price! (Luckily I got mine from the library!) I remain a fan of O'Brians novels, but will not look to him to clarify facts in the future...
