1 out of 5 stars Dissappointed.......2007-01-18

Very dissappointed with the product. It showed up in several pieces when I open the box. The sleeve is all torn up and falling apart. 2 bottom corners of the books is all smashed up. Not sure who's to blame - the packaging guy or the delivery man. Informed customer service about getting a replacement - unsuccesful - all I got is a freaking $10 credit on me next purchases. After this disaster, not sure if there is a next purchase.

Star Wars related books are legion, but the hands down best-and the champion film-tie-in book period-is the [massive (15"x10.5")] Star Wars Chronicles. Just mentioning the book's title can make diehard fanboys cream their trooper armor. Yeah, it's that good. Home costumers, model makers, artists, and prop geeks especially lust after the Chronicles for its rich mine of simply stunning and often unique OT reference photos. Next to a genuine Graflex or MPP lightsaber hilt, the Chronicles is any Star Wars fan's most prized possession.

Book Description

Taking a magickal approach to this often misunderstood spirituality, Christopher Penczak explores the fascinating path of ascension. Ascension Magick unveils the diverse mystical roots of ascension, and highlights where the beliefs and practices of today's "light workers" intersect with those of modern pagans, witches, and magick practitioners. It also examines the practical side-various forms of magick, energy healing, meditation, past life regression, channeling, dowsing-and provides helpful meditations, spells, and exercises. From angels and aliens to reincarnation and the Merkaba, Penczak leaves no stone unturned in this remarkably thorough and absorbing examination of ascension spirituality and magick.

5 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough.......2007-10-11

This book has marked a significant point in my spiritual growth.

I've read many, many works on magick. While they all tell you how to cast a circle and call the quarters...no book I've seen to date has addressed how to go beyond the basics and actually GROW within the magickal arts.

Until now.

I feel this book is very "next level" material.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Synthesis!.......2007-08-16

Over the years I've read alot of books on ceremonial occultism, Paganism, Wicca, and occasionally I ventured into Ascension material - but never felt any connection or resonance with the more "New Age" offerings, even though I found some of the information compelling and in many ways related to my own magickal practice and path.

The reason I did not "feel" Ascension material was really related to more of a vocabulary difference, than anything else. The terminology was vastly different, with alot of nearly sci-fi jargon, and a seeming imbalanced perception of Light as in direct opposition to Dark. I also was unsure of what to think about the whole Ascended Masters and ET elements that were such core aspects of that paradigm. Many within the Pagan community looked down on Ascensionists as "fluffy White Lighters", while alot of attitudes within the New Age community seemed to look down on Pagans and Witches as evil &/or misguided.

Christopher Penczak has written a truely amazing book that helps bridge the gap between the various magickal and spiritual communities that actually share most, if not all, the same goals. Taking the major concepts and ideologies from the Ascension paradigm and drawing parallels to the Eastern and Western magickal and spiritual paths, Christopher cultivates a sense of kinship. Even the ET and intergalactic elements of Ascension were put into a perspective that made them not only palatable, but accessible and potentially very useful to a wide variety of readers. Also "translating" the contextual vocabulary of the New Age into concepts more familiar to Pagans and Magickians, the reader become highly aware of the value that Ascension can bring to the very modern seeker - whether or not they consider themselves "New Age" or not.

The book is hefty (which I loved), but does not rely on filler that repeats the same line from many other available books to acheive its weight. Readers well-versed in Western magickal traditions, such as Cabala and ritual magick will likely have a much easier time with some of the material than those unfamiliar with it. But by offering explanations that appeal to the knowledge-set of many different pracititioner levels and paths, everyone will be able to get a great deal from this veritable tome.

Throughout the book Christopher's desire to cultivate an inter-paradigm understanding and mutually beneficial exchange is very clear. Misconceptions that each community has about the other are also addressed honestly, and discussed in a frank manner - and even the weaknesses of the path are gently exposed, with practical solutions for overcoming or avoiding them altogether provided for those who wish to delve deeper and become more involved with the Ascension scene.

I absolutely loved this book and dog-eared many pages and chapters to go back to and re-read for better understanding. I also loved the meditations provided, especially the Merkaba activation. These allow the reader to experience the energies of this paradigm for themselves, should they choose.

5 out of 5 stars Ascension Magick.......2007-06-20

This is probably the most important book I've read to date. Although it's not the easiest read, there are new concepts that I'm working on, it contains the foundation for this most important path. As a long-time fan of Christopher Penczak, I can say that it fits in nicely with his easy-to-understand way of writing. No, I don't understand everthing in the book, but it a lot easier than Frissels's, Nothing in This Book is True... I think it is a necessary addition to any personal library. It is inspiring!

5 out of 5 stars New age collections must have this........2007-06-17

Ascension spirituality receives a new level of clarity and insight in ASCENSION MAGICK: RITUAL, MYTH & HEALING FOR THE NEW AEON. The history, spirituality and meaning of ascension theology and techniques are surveyed from a spiritual and magickal perspective, with chapters focusing on everything related, from the science of the seven rays and karma to channeling, Atlantis theory, sacred geometry and more. New age collections must have this.

5 out of 5 stars A book for Pleidian Pagans and Magicians.......2007-06-02

In this book Christopher Penczak synthesizes channeled material with neo-pagan practice with excellent results. He has sifted through the voluminous output of trance channels and gleaned out the nuggets from the mountain of fortune-cookie platitudes, murky and meandering prose, and sentimental blathering that is the overwhelming majority of that literature. The result is very worthwhile addition to any spiritual library. The chapter on the Merkaba meditation alone is worth the purchase price. It also would be good as an introduction to anyone curious about channeled material. Highly recommended.

No doubt Aristotle just rolled over in his grave. An essay called "Homer and Aristotle" would appear to be a treatise on two ancient Greek thinkers; in this case, it's a depiction of Homer Simpson's Aristotelian virtues. Raja Halwani's "Homeric" essay is amusing, though, and moreover, it actually ends up being enlightening, especially for those just learning Aristotle's ethics. Bart may be a Nietzschean without knowing it; Mr. Burns is a cipher for unhappiness (except when he eats "so-called iced-cream"); and Ned Flanders raises questions about neighborly love. The Simpsons and Philosophy has a lot to say about The Simpsons, and even more to say about philosophy.

The book collects 18 essays into an unpretentious, tongue-in-cheek, and surprisingly intelligent look at philosophy through the lens of Matt Groening's vaunted animated series. The editors are quick to point out that they don't think The Simpsons "is the equivalent of history's best works of literature ... but it nevertheless is just deep enough, and certainly funny enough, to warrant serious attention." The writers of the book are mostly professional philosophers, and they are appropriately erudite. But what is truly astonishing, even for a confessed Simpsons addict, is their breadth of Simpsons knowledge, spanning all 12 seasons of the show's history. The Simpsons and Philosophy is obviously not intended to be a turning point in modern thought, but it is an excellent introduction to some core elements of philosophy. --Eric de Place

Book Description

This unconventional and lighthearted introduction to the ideas of the major Western philosophers examines The Simpsons — TV’s favorite animated family. The authors look beyond the jokes, the crudeness, the attacks on society — and see a clever display of irony, social criticism, and philosophical thought. The writers begin with an examination of the characters. Does Homer actually display Aristotle’s virtues of character? In what way does Bart exemplify American pragmatism? The book also examines the ethics and themes of the show, and concludes with discussions of how the series reflects the work of Aristotle, Marx, Camus, Sartre, and other thinkers.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible ... save your money.......2007-07-29

After all the good reviews, including from Publisher's Weekly, I was expecting a thought-provoking and interesting read. Instead, "The Simpsons and Philosophy" is an uneven, but mostly poor, collection of essays that do not do the television show or the Popular Culture and Philosophy book series justice. Some of the more bizarre entries:

In the essay "Thus Spake Bart: On Nietzsche and the Virtues of Being Bad," the author spends many pages describing the Nietzchean hero only to conclude at the end that Bart does NOT represent the Nietzchean ideal since he is merely defined in opposition to authority. For a book about the Simpsons, it would have made more sense to spend a couple of pages explaining what Bart is not, and the majority of the essay explaining what he philosophically DOES represent.

The essays on allusions and parodies are what one would expect to find in a basic literary commentary, not a philosophy book.

"Simpsonian Sexual Politics" makes several claims that I, as a feminist, found astonishingly off-base. The authors' believe that Marge is merely the descendant of many domesticated sitcom mothers, completely missing how that representation is used to undercut and subvert that traditional image. Among their claims is that the Simpson home is a bastion of "moral serenity" except when challenged by the public moral decay of Springfield -- to anyone familiar with the character of Homer Simpson and his antics (lying, cheating, hypocrisy, etc.) that claim is utterly laughable. The authors also describe Marge as "asexual" though they admit she has a "satisfying sex life" -- one can only assume that since Homer's and Marge's active and imaginative sex life is one of the shows' ongoing jokes, that the authors describe her as asexual because her sexual assets are not on display for general consumption. A curious contradiction in a feminist essay.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the Buffy The Vampire Slayer book in the same series, I expected the same caliber of analysis for The Simpsons but was sadly disappointed. Ironically, one of the essays in this book refers to Buffy with the shockingly false claim (typical of this book in general) that BTVS is "strongly committed to a black and white distinction between right and wrong as only teenagers can be." In fact that show is well-known for dealing with moral ambiguity -- and the far superior Buffy and Philosophy book has the insightful and edifying essays that this book fails to provide. In the future, I'll be far more cautious about spending money on books in this series!

3 out of 5 stars Great for lovers of both the Simpsons and philosophy!!.......2007-06-08

I am a huge fan of the Simpsons but found this book to be slightly boring and some chapters read more like a text book for a college class. I LOVED the book "The Gospel According to the Simpsons" which I read straight through without putting down. I guess religion just interests me more (hence why I gave this book only three stars). If you love the Simpsons, philosophy, and can follow what the authors are talking about you will love this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Brainwave On Cable T.V........2007-03-03

It's been said by many great men that everything everywhere has the capacity to teach us something. Even fools can be instructive. We may not like the teacher, but that doesn't devalue the lesson.

Well, The Simpsons is a teacher that virtually anyone could love. One of America's most subversive and enduring shows, it has long been recognized that The Simpsons is much more than a child's playground of primary colors. This is a show that marries incisive wit with low-brow sight gags, obscure cultural allusions with puerile puns. It's a mine of meaning, dressed in a Just A Cartoon coat.

"The Simpsons and Philosophy" takes the extended exploits of Homer and company (up to the 12th season) and digs out as many nuggets of intellectual gold as there are to find, and it turns out there are a lot. Maggie's silence, Bart's bad-boy-ness, sexual politics, hyper-irony, the nuclear family, and what little Aristotealian virtues (if any) there are to be found in Homer himself: they all spark insightful and shrewd debate.

The book, however, should've been called "Philosophy and The Simpsons." There are a few essays where the show is the foreground of the philosophical thought that is dissected and analyzed (such as Irwin and Lombardo's brief treatise on allusions, or Wallace's Marxist evaluation of the show's almost unclassifiable sense of humor), but most of the essays treat the show as a source of convenient syllogisms to help bolster ideas that seem almost beside the point (among these, most acutely, is Jolley's closing essay on the nature of thought -- a dry, thoroughly technical affair that has almost nothing to do whatsoever with Groening's funny, yellow family).

Because this is philosophy (and philosophers) we're talking about, don't expect the sort of amusement to be found in a half-hour block of the Fox television show. It might even be worth pointing out that "a-muse," defined by its roots, means "un-thinking." Although The Simpsons has the versatility to appeal to a broad spectrum of brainiacs and boobs (although not in equal measure, I'd argue), this is certainly a thinking person's book, and to those with patience, an appetite for profundity, and the understanding that wisdom can even come from fools like Homer, well, it's bound to inspire thought of your own.

4 out of 5 stars Mmmmmm.......Philosophy.......2006-09-20

The Simpsons have endured as one of the most popular TV families in the world, despite some of the most vociferous criticisms that you could level at a programme. As much as some hate it, there are those love it to the same degree. Finally, a bunch of philosophers have taken "The Simpsons" seriously enough to write a book about it.

The 18 essays contained in "The Simpsons and Philosophy" cover a broad range of topics. Everything from Kant, Aristotle, Neitzsche to semiotics, (I didn't even know what that was until this book!), get mentioned. Although a couple of essays deal with the same philosophical bent, (Aristotle pops up a couple of times), there isn't the overload that has appeared in other volumes in this series, (such as Plato's cave in "The Matrix and Philosophy").

I am no great fan of the Simpsons, but I do rather enjoy the quirky humour. However, even for the non-fan, this book really highlights the complexity of the Simpsons and what the programme has to say, (or not say, as the case may be). In a programme that could be easily dismissed as innane, there is a suprising smorgasboard of philoshical ideas that would keep even Homer in the middle of a feeding frenzy happy.

4 out of 5 stars Philosophy for all.......2006-07-13

Sometimes the most difficult matters can be presented in a funny way. It's good to reflect about philosophy in our daily life. So, if you like philosophy, if you like to think, if you see the Simpsons, and if you don't have enough time to take seriously Kant (to read Kritik der reinen Vernunft), that's your book.

Book Description

Comedian, writer, director, actor, musician, and deep thinker, Woody Allen is clearly trying to say something, but what? And why should anyone care? Fifteen philosophers representing different schools of thought answer these questions, focusing on different works and varied aspects of Allen's multifaceted output. These essays explore such topics as how Schopenhauer's theory of humor emerges in Annie Hall; why, for all his apparent pessimism, Allen gives a brighter alternative to the Bogartian nihilism of film noir; the importance of integrity for the Good Life, as found in Manhattan; and the fact that just because the universe is meaningless and life is pointless is no reason to commit suicide. Also here are droll, probing essays on why hedonism is a health hazard, and why, despite the fact that Earth may be swallowed by a black hole and crushed to the size of a peanut, the toilet continues to overflow.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Could have been a lot better........2006-09-25

The first thing to know about this book is that it is but one in a series. "Woody Allen and Philosophy" is brought to you by the same folks who brought you "The Simpsons and Philosophy," "Seinfeld and Philosophy," and so on. I have not been impressed with this series. Generally, the pop culture topics chosen have no explicit philosophical inspiration. Philosophy must be read-in to otherwise superficial material. Some of these movies and sit-coms constitute good illustrative examples of philosophical topics (e.g. the tired observation that Seinfeld is a "deconstructive" comedy about nothing), but none of them was consciously embedded with philosophy.

Woody's work is different. The attempt to understand the intellectual references contained in Woody's early films is precisely what led me to study philosophy in the first place. They contain deeply philosophical themes and explicit philosophical references. Films like Annie Hall, Love and Death, and Bananas are absolutely packed with high-culture easter eggs waiting for a good interpreter. Sadly, the essays in this book miss pretty much all of them.

Of course, I admit I am the sort of snob who thinks that philosophy should not be the handmaiden to pop culture. I am embarrassed to see Schopenhauer wasted on Seinfeld.

The bottom line is that you will enjoy this book if you enjoy the series itself. Serious Woody Allen fans and philosophers alike will probably be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars In depth.......2006-02-24

Really heavy philosophical stuff. If you're an avid fan [like me] of Woody Allen and understand philosophy a little [like me] you will enjoy this book. I found out more than I thought I would ever know about Allen's films from reading this book. Thoroughly engrossing and fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Articles focus on Allen's philosophy and viewpoints .......2004-10-12

How often has the reader combed a casual survey of actor Woody Allen longing for insights into the witty sayings and cutting remarks Allen is notable for? Wonder no longer. In Woody Allen And Philosophy, Mark Conrad and Aeon Skoble edit a fine philosophical approach to Allen's sayings and life, presenting articles which survey his pragmatic optimism, his sex comedys and spoofs, and his artistic films alike. Articles focus on Allen's philosophy and viewpoints and provide plenty of personal insights in the process of analyzing his works.

THE SECRET HISTORY OF AEON FLUX

Spy • Assassin • Seductress

Her instincts: honed for survival. Her psyche: primed for anarchy. Her body: sculpted for action. She's Aeon Flux, a lethal, leather-clad spy who cuts through a brutal swath of subterfuge through Bregna, a hi-tech society controlled by her nemesis, Trevor Goodchild. But Trevor's and Aeon's bond is deeper than that of assassin to tyrant, and the mystery that drives their twisted relationship has remained as impenetrable as Aeon's padlocked chastity belt -- until now.

THE HERODOTUS FILE

This explosive file of classified intelligence reveals Trevor Goodchild's chilling plan to consolidate power by erasing history -- and the hiring of mercenary agent, Aeon Flux, to transform his plan into an Orwellian reality. Crammed with transcripts, surveillance, and memos, the file explores the dark corridors of Aeon's mysterious life, bringing into question her ultimate allegiance. Is Aeon truly loyal to Trevor's vision of Bregna? Or is she stealthily subverting his plot from the inside out? This stunning file tells a story of intrigue and treachery, of domination and submission, of love and hate so perverse, it could only spring from the otherworld of Aeon Flux.

The television series, Aeon Flux, is a Colossal Pictures Production in association with MTV Networks.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect companion piece to the greatest series ever animated..........2007-03-16

Aside from presenting a more detailed view of life in the fueding nation-states Monica/Bregna, and providing additional insight into the complicated relationship between Aeon Flux and Trevor Goodchild, this book will teach you how to write effective inter-office emails and the dire importance of injecting creativity into professional presentations.

A better $2.50 you will never spend...

4 out of 5 stars Good book, bad movie.......2007-01-09

It's unfortunate that the cover art was redone by MTV as a movie tie-in because this book has nothing to do with the movie of the same name. No offense to Charlize Theron, but the original Aeon is the topic of this book. As an insane Peter Chung fan, I had to have it but anyone interested in material resulting from this movie should probably pick up the recent Aeon Flux graphic novel instead if they liked the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A good tie in to the animated series.......2005-10-15

In a weird way, this book actually made the Æon/Trevor Love-Hate relationship make more sense. While the animated series did present that Bregna and Monica were quite obviously once one, this book filled in the plot hole of what happened. Learning more of Æon's specifications was nice, though I could have done without some of the specification information on her victims. Oddly, this book makes the muddled AF time line actually make some sense. Especially if the episode regarding President Clavius immediately follows the Herodotus File.

4 out of 5 stars Imagination in Overdrive.......2005-09-02

Graphic novel based on the MTV series. Intriguing pictural novel with incredible imagination. Graphics terrific, and plot good until the end, which seemed too abrupt. Always sexual undertones. Fascinating page turner, as almost every page is different in format. Supposed to read as if it were a file. The idea of rewriting history to suit the victor is certainly not a new one. The Civil War is perhaps one such example. The futuristic technology envisioned here is as good as the graphics that depict it. I came upon this cold, read it in 24 hours. Enjoyed it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Precious.......2002-11-12

There is never enough Aeon. Ever. I have the pvc statue, the 3 vhs set and the DVD. I've dressed as her for halloween 2 times and probably will again some day with improvied outfits. This is a must for any Flux fan, lots of cool pictures, it's a case file on her and gives a little insight into the story, but not too much.

Book Description

Gerald del Campo began his inward travels in 1975 utilizing the various methods prescribed by Dion Fortune, Paul Foster Case, William Gray, Eliphas Levi, Arthur Waite, Helena P. Blavatsky and others. Most of this work was rewarding, yielding profound results. In 1982 he experienced a life changing event which altered his perception of the Universe and his relationship to it: A complete stranger handed him Liber AL vel Legis, The Book of the Law.

After over two decades of traveling this road, Gerald del Campo released the first edition of his field guide to the Thelemic path, New Aeon Magick. Filled with deep insight, practical instruction, and a very down-to-earth style, this volume became an instant success. New Aeon Magick helps decipher many of the puzzles that confront the modern practitioner: What is Qabalah and how do I use it? Where do I get my Magical tools? What is yoga? What makes Thelema different? These and many other questions are addressed in this "magical travel guide."

This is the second revised edition of New Aeon Magick. In it del Campo has expanded and enlarged this unique work by adding more on Qabalah, Gematria, God forms, the Thelemic path, magical ceremonies and much more. Where ever your path leads you to, New Aeon Magick shows the art of magical living and is presented in a realistic, easy to understand and practical fashion. This book is intended for those that want to focus on "Practice" rather than "Theory." It will encourage you to find your own path so that you may open up a road not previously charted.

Discovering your path is a very difficult task. Ranging from what groups to join, to how to obtain proper magical tools. The path is filled with trials and pitfalls. All such paths are said to originate from one source, making the philosophical choices we must make even more difficult. New Aeon Magick helps avoid these obstacles.

New Aeon Magick is a unique book, and the details of a Thelemic magical life are candidly shared by a magician who has been said to "wear his heart on his sleeve." This is not a book you will put away on your shelf to collect dust: it is a manual and a glimpse into the private life of a Thelemic magician.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good place to start.......2005-02-08

I am a big fan of the author in his capacity as practitioner of Thelema and magick, and as a scholar of many things. I wish he had employed those skills in producing this work.

New Aeon Magick purports to be a beginner's guide. Del Campo specifically stated in his Introduction that it started life as something to pass on to his children as their guide to Thelema and magick. In this regard, it is a decent overview of some very complex matters.

The treatments of some of the subjects are occasionally superficial, unfortunately. The reader looking to get an indepth discussion of these issues will need to suppliment his or her reading. To aid this, a bibliography would be worth having. Also some sourcing of his quotes and statements about the teachings of Thelema and of other magical schools would be helpful.

This book would serve well as a "table of contents" to other, more detailed treatments of Thelema and ceremonial magick, but has trouble standing on its own.

5 out of 5 stars A Pure Delight!.......2004-11-26

I very seldom take the time to do these things, so you know I have to be very impressed to do so. I found this book to be an eye opening experience which has opened a door to a whole new world. Part of what makes this book so special is that it makes it's case without having to have any background in the subject matter.
Unlike other occult authors Mr.Del Campo opens the door without a lot of "in" jargon. A very sraight up approach to the subject matter. If your curious about the subject of Thelema, look no further!

4 out of 5 stars Living Thelema.......2004-11-25

This book by a veteran Thelemite and O.T.O. official is about living Thelema. It adresses every day issues, as well as other stuff available elsewhere that are popular topics in occult circles such as the HGA. A good little book that deserves to be read by any serious, real, live Thelemite. The chapters for the most part are very small, leading the reader to go on a pace and read several chapters at a time. A less grandiose and imposing book on magick than Crowley's or Duquette's. This should give one the understanding of what it is to be a Thelemite and how we are. We are people just like you, but we have a grandiose belief system and we are legendary. Being a real, living Thelemite is like being the star of your own fantasy play, for better and worse. At times life can be humorous and blend that with seriousness and it can also often be a nightmare, not just for me but for other people. Even though it's not the same, cross my path and I will get you back usuallu worse. My life philosophy is "what comes around goes around," as cliche as it is. They can't make you be something you're not.

1 out of 5 stars A Steaming Pile of Crap.......2004-08-29

If there was an option for zero stars, that is what I would award this "book." To point out all of the flaws, inaccuracies, and blatant falsehoods in this book would take up nearly as much space as the book itself occupies. I wholeheartedly agree with a previous reviewer that if one is not intellectualy ready for Liber ABA, then that person is not ready for ceremonial magick. This book panders to idiots and is a disgrace to Crowley's name.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book.......2004-02-28

Gerald del Campo gives a great primer lesson for those who want to be serious magickal workers. No fluf-bunny crap here! This is nuts and bolts, how it's done reference. I've made this mandatory reading for all my beginner students. It's a quick and easy read, that imparts volumes of information. You wont be disappointed buying this book!

          Book Description

Four hundred years in the future, the last of Humanity will live behind the protective walls of Bregna, an idyllic utopia built to shelter them from the deadly jungle growing beyond. Life in Bregna is perfect, or as perfect as the government can make the people believe. But not everyone is fooled by their mood-altering propaganda - a small band of freedom fighters wish to see things change, and they just might manage to pull off this impossible dream with the help of their top secret agent, the sexy, deadly Aeon Flux. As Bregnan authorities prepare a new weapon to use against the jungle pounding at their walls, Aeon prepares to turn their plans against them. But this time she is not alone - she has been instructed to train a new agent, a fiery young woman named Sithandra, who may not be all that she appears.
