Book Description
The exciting conclusion to the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy recounts the climactic events of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice from its enigmatic hero's point of view.
One of the most beloved romantic heroes in all of literature, Fitzwilliam Darcy remains an enigma even to Jane Austen's most devoted fans. No longer. With this concluding volume in the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy, novelist and Austen aficionada Pamela Aidan at last gives readers the man in full.
These Three Remain follows a humbled Darcy on the journey of self-discovery, after Elizabeth Bennet's rejection of his marriage proposal, in which he endeavors to grow into the kind of gentleman he desires to become. Happily, a chance meeting with Elizabeth during a tour of his estate in Derbyshire offers Darcy a new opportunity to press his suit, but his newfound strengths are put to the test by an old nemesis, George Wickham.
Vividly capturing the colorful historical and political milieu of the Regency era, Aidan writes in a style evocative of her literary progenitor, but with a wit and humor very much her own. While staying faithful to the people and events in Austen's original, she adds her own fascinating cast of characters, weaving a rich tapestry out of Darcy's past and present that will beguile his admirers anew.
Customer Reviews:
Read it!.......2007-09-24
Wonderful! If you are an Austen fan - you'll enjoy all three "Darcy" books by this author.
Better than the real thing.......2007-09-05
My daughter and I have read the trilogy and this author is true to the original. Darcy comes to life and we see him in another light. Aidan's Darcy is lifelike and we share his struggles and adventures throughout the book. A "must read" if you love Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. This book also has, at the end, discussions for a book group. Very useful.
Quite a page turner. Great ending for the series.......2007-09-04
I really enjoyed this imagined inside view into Darcy's character and path to self-realization. I couldn't put the book down and read through it very quickly, despite having to take care of my 9 month old son! I also found the historical tidbits on the history and politics of the era interesting; Aiden found a good way to incorporate it into the background. You don't get that inside view in Austen's work. I also think Aiden struck a good balance for having sympathy for Darcy without being overly forgiving of his shortcomings. There is only one thing I want to know: What happened to Georgiana's piano???
This book made me want to reread Pride and Prejudice again! :-)
The Best.......2007-09-04
Pamela Aidan gave us the dept of Darcy's feelings. She let us see the deep turmoil that he went through to win Elizabeth's love and how he over came them inspite of his aunt's disapproval. Jane wrote about Elizabeth's thoughts and Pamela wrote about Darcy. She really understood Darcy's feelings and his love Elizabeth. Too bad that she haven't written another about the life of Darcy and Elizabeth at Pemberley, I am sure she would do a splendid job there too. Bravo, we are waiting for another one.
Worth the wait.......2007-08-31
I had a little trouble getting into Duty and Desire, the second book in this series, mostly because of the obvious lack of Elizabeth Bennett actually appearing. This third book, however was worth the wait. It covers our favorie parts of P&P, but with all of the fun of finally knowing what Mr. Darcy was really thinking. And we get to really know Georgianna. She's so cute you want to take her home with you. And the relationship between her and Darcy is so refreshing. It's also nice to have a P&P novel that is true to Austen's style of writing...no heavy bedroom scenes or anything like that. I felt I was truly reading a sequel to P&P. My ONLY complaint is that there were some rare moments that the lengthy description had me skipping ahead to the next paragraph to get to the point. Otherwise, SO WORTH THE READ!

Book Description
Human Osteology, Second Edition is designed for students and professionals who wish to advance their osteological skills in terms of accurately identifying human skeletal remains, however isolated and fragmentary. These remains can then be used to deduce information about the original lives of the deceased individuals. This book will continue to be an essential text for courses on the human skeleton, as well as a basic reference and field manual for professional osteologists and anatomists, forensic scientists, paleontologists, and archaeologists.
Human Osteology, Second Edition includes nearly a decade of advances in osteological research since the first edition. Each chapter has been strengthened and updated, including a new chapter on molecular osteology and four new case studies drawn from more recent research. This edition also includes a valuable guide to electronic resources in osteology.
Key Features
* Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of exceptional photographs and drawings specifically designed to show a maximum amount of anatomical information
* Based on nearly 25 years of teaching human osteology
* Skeletal parts shown life-size for ease of study and use
* Four new case studies emphasize the correct and positive identification of human bones and teeth, which is fundamental in paleontology, archaeology, and forensic science
Customer Reviews:
Human Osteology!.......2007-09-28
This book is very helpful when learning human osteology. I really like how many pictures there are. If I can't have the real object in front of me then the book is the next best thing. Although the book is kind of pricey I think it was worth the money. Over all very good text book for the subject.
Use for Siding of Hands and Feet.......2006-12-07
I've had no problems underlining in pencil with this book. either underline lightly or place a piece of cardstock between the pages. despite the fact that a lot of bone features are ignored, it is worth the price to buy it used just for the siding of the carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, tarsals, metatarsals, and pedal phalanges.
In our human skeletal analysis lab we have at least 4 texts, including this one. Each one is lacking something the other has. It seems common for these types of texts. I've had to buy this book, and another, in addition to the required text for the course just to cover all aspects about osteology (except pathology, which is covered in a book that costs 180 bucks).
That said, if you're a physical anth major, you'll probably need more than one book anyway, since we need to know every feature on each individual bone.
useful text, but not perfect.......2006-11-09
This book is a good introductory text, and I have referred to it many times, but I can't give it 5 stars...
As someone else said, the descriptions of features on the bones were sometimes lacking.
And while the photos are big, bold, and very helpful, sometimes the single-source lighting throws shadows over features on the bones. This didn't bother me too much because I was lucky enough to study in a lab with dozens of specimens I could use to familiarize myself with the landmarks, but for students who don't have access to real bones, these photos may be insufficient.
A dissenting opinion...........2004-01-10
In order to temper the unrestrained exuberance of the former reviews, I think it is appropriate to point out what I believe are a couple of major shortcomings of this book.
Yes the photography is very good. However, the paper it is printed on is not so good. Don't try underlining any of the text with a pen or pencil; the line will be transferred to the following page. The thin paper combined with the ink on the opposite side forms a tracing paper when you mark on the page. For a price that completely wrecks a hundred dollar bill, I think the customer deserves more. Mr. White is surely wagging his vestigial tail all the way to the bank.
Most importantly, the descriptive sections of the text are very brief, with many bone features ignored. The Running Press reprint of the 1901 edition of Gray's Anatomy has a much more thorough (and much much cheaper) text of bone anatomy, although many of its formerly great illustrations have been reduced to dark blots (evidently in an effort to make the text more legible). In White's book, I would have preferred that seemingly precious text space be used for description of anatomy rather than the author spinning his (and academia's) fairy tales of how fish turned into men.
Excellent.......2003-04-14
This book is an excellent source for information on learning the bones, how to side them, and many other interesting aspects of osteology.

Don't waste your time on this one.......2007-09-02
I picked this book up at a dollar store and was so disappointed with the story. I kept reading and waiting for something solid to happen. It didn't. I was at the end when I finally accepted the fact that the book is no good. I was so glad when I finished this and hate I wasted so much time.
All That Remains.......2007-06-12
Typically, I prefer non-fiction material to fiction, however, this series by Ms. Cornwell is well written.
The author is able to keep the reader engaged throughout the entire book; with hints here, intrigue put strategically there.
I would recommend this book, and the series, to anyone who enjoys a good suspense.
Great book.......2007-01-10

The novel's narrator, Stevens, is a perfect English butler who tries to give his narrow existence form and meaning through the self-effacing, almost mystical practice of his profession. In a career that spans the second World War, Stevens is oblivious of the real life that goes on around him -- oblivious, for instance, of the fact that his aristocrat employer is a Nazi sympathizer. Still, there are even larger matters at stake in this heartbreaking, pitch-perfect novel -- namely, Stevens' own ability to allow some bit of life-affirming love into his tightly repressed existence.
Book Description
A tragic, spiritual portrait of a perfect English butler and his reaction to his fading insular world in post-war England. A wonderful, wonderful book.
Customer Reviews:
"In bantering lies the key to human warmth.".......2007-09-15
"A 'great' butler can only be, surely, one who can point to his years of service and say that he has applied his talents to serving a great gentleman--and through the latter, in serving humanity" (p. 117).
The Remains of the Day (1989) is the third novel by Kazuo Ishiguro (1954). It won the Booker prize in 1989. The book's title not only refers to the time of day (evening), when the narrator reflects upon his day's work, but also upon his mature age, from which he can reflect upon his life. The title also refers to the last grand houses of Great Britain's staffed with butlers such as Ishiguro's narrator, Stevens.
Stevens is a loyal English butler who has who dedicated his life to the service of Lord Darlington. Upon receiving a letter from an ex co-worker Miss Kenton describing her unhappy married life, and at the encouragement of his new employer, Mr. Farraday, an American, Stevens borrows a car to take a "motoring trip" to revisit Miss Kenton. Along the way (in a plot structure reminiscent of Bergman's Wild Strawberries - Criterion Collection) Stevens reflects upon his service to Lord Darlington, the meaning of "dignity," his relationship with his father, and his true feelings for Miss Kenton, whom he cherishes. It was because of his service to Lord Darlington that Stevens never acted upon his love for Miss Kenton. Although she offered him her love, he refused to even acknowledge her feelings by allowing himself to be "off duty" in her presence (p. 169). Rather, all his life Stevens has been consumed by the desire to be a "great" butler, which for him has meant embodying the ideals of service, dignity, and composure. Ultimately, The Remains of The Day is a poignant meditation upon missed opportunities and lost love; one cannot "turn back the clock," as Stevens puts it (p. 239). Ishiguro succeeds at drawing the reader into Stevens' loss as a result of placing duty above the needs of his heart. This is a perfect novel, one that I highly recommend, along with the 1993 Merchant-Ivory must-see film The Remains of the Day (Special Edition) starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.
One of my 10 favorite novels of the last 25 years.
G. Merritt
A Devoted Professional.......2007-09-15
Brilliant novel about a butler so dedicated to perfection that he suppresses all human emotion in the quest for professional "dignity" and service to a great man. Feelings of love, grief, guilt & shame are banished in a life of service, and Stevens is ever searching for a way to improve, even in (what should be) casual "banterings" with a new American employer. However, traces of the butler's humanity emerge as he travels the countryside in hopes of having a former maid return to Darlington Hall. The true character of his former employer, the words of a letter from Miss Kenton, and his own past behavior are under scrutiny during his travels. I loved the subtlety & elegant melancholy of this novel. Thoroughly enjoyable.
The best of Ishiguro.......2007-09-03
In a world full of "good" books, Remains of the Day stands out as a truly amazing one. It speaks to Kazuo Ishiguro's talent that such a simple plot about a reserved English butler could be so engrossing and heartbreaking. The end of the book is especially powerful, and likely to leave any reader thinking about it long after they've finished. This is easily the best work of Ishiguro and, in my opinion, one of the best modern novels out there. Not to be missed.
Excellent.......2007-08-20
Ishiguro is an amazing writer and this novel is no exception. This work is presented first through memories and recollections during a road trip and later via an interaction at the end of the trip and reflections on that interaction. Ishiguro presents a question, which I will not ruin here, that everyone should ask themselves. Before you ask the question he presents you must read this book immediately.
Mr. Stevens is among the finest creations in English literature.......2007-07-11
The story of The Remains of the Day unfolds in a strange but effective way. The narrator is Mr. Stevens, the key character in the novel, and it is his voice that tells the increasingly revealing tale of his life as a 'gentleman's gentleman'.
However, Ishiguro does not simply allow Stevens to give us a memoir of his life from the perspective of advanced years. Instead Stevens records his motoring trip across England as if he is keeping an hourly diary, perhaps spoken into a dictaphone (if such technology had existed in the mid-1950s when the main story is set). This device allows us to experience each stage of the journey as it happens and, more importantly, Steven's growing self-awareness as he tries to piece together the significance of events from his past life.
The writing style reflects the period and the character of Stevens beautifully. As narrator, he seems unable or unwilling to acknowledge the emotions that always threaten to unseat the 'dignity' to which he aspires. In his conversations with Miss Kenton, he uses language to preserve decorum at all costs. Passion is his enemy and he fights a lifelong battle against it.
In Mr. Stevens, Ishiguro has given us one of the greatest creations in all of English literature. It is a wonderful accomplishment and the author fully deserves every plaudit and honour he has received for this masterpiece.

Book Description
Internationally acclaimed artist, Sally Mann, named 'America's Best' photographer in 2001 by Time magazine, offers this deeply felt meditation on morality. Renowned for her candid portrayal of family life (Immediate Family), her revealing study of girlhood (At Twelve), and landscapes from the American South (Mother Land and Deep South), internationally acclaimed photographer Sally Mann has produced a powerful new body of work on the one subject that affects us all. In WHAT REMAINS, a five-part meditation on mortality, Mann focuses her lens on the ineffable divide between body and soul, the means by which life takes leave of this earth, and the manner in which it rejoins it. Mann's new photographs are by turns shocking and sublime. An armed fugitive is hunted down by police. She photographs the scars left on her property after the incident. A series of brooding, otherworldly landscapes made at the Civil War battlefield of Antietam is followed by a group of close-up portraits of Mann's own children, floating in the inky black atmosphere of the nineteenth-century ambrotype; another series taken at a forensics study site offers an unflinching look at the process of decomposition, as do images of a beloved pet greyhound-long since departed. Made with the collodion process, using glass plates, the resulting images are at once painterly, sculptural, and photographic.

Very pleased.......2007-08-23
I was very happy to recieve my purchase. It was in great condition and arrived alot sooner than expected. I certainly plan to make future purchases on Amazon.
NECRO-ART.......2007-03-09
I was a bit disappointed as I didn't realize it was just pictures of "Extremely Dead People" photos. I really did not read any of the other reviews so I was a bit shocked when I opened the book. I would not purchase this book again. I thought it was something concerning life, not past life. If you are a person interested in NECRO-ART it would be of interest.
soso.......2005-01-20
Being a photographer myself it is a must to study Sally Mann's work. No doubt, here reputation is not coincident and definitely not only because she took a couple of photos of children without cloth. Her photos tell stories and portrait those children in a very strong and real way.
I was very impressed with her work and it still inspires me today.
I was very happy when this book arrived at my door and couldn't wait to open it. The photos of the decaying bodies is clearly not every's taste, but captured on in an extremely impressive and strong way. She treated her negatives is a way that matches the rotten look of the bodies. She carefully chose a style that gives you just enough distance to still feel comfortable but at the same time getting close enough to recognize what we see.
I had to look through these photos a couple of times to adjust myself to it and become open to what I saw. Looking at human being this way is something we have damned from our everyday life. It is not something I would put on my wall, but it is an experience I don't want to miss either.
The big disappointment comes after those photos. The other 2/3 of the book shows photos that are hardly worth the paper they are printed on. I consider myself open to a wide range of artisitc expression but not the lack of it. What we see on the following pages is like the title suggests the remains of Sally Mann's drawers where she probably found decade old films that she forgot to process. As much as I tried to like it and find something "talking" to me I simply ended up flipping through the pages more and more quickly hoping to get to the next chapter. But it never came.
No I don't think it is a waste of money, and yes I still like Sally Mann's work. I just don't have to like this book (except for the first part).
If you like her previous work, her style and extremely impressive and artistic portraits you might be very disappointed with this book as it is not remotely similar to what you might expect.
Ethereal Meditations on Mortality.......2005-01-05
WHAT REMAINS is an apt title to this extraordinary photographic portfolio by the sensitive, ever inquisitive, gentle spirit of Sally Mann. Though often criticized for her 'audacity' of material she elects to photograph, Mann is never less than creative and challenging.
This well designed book is divided into sections that explore life and especially death in its many guises - accidental, violent, natural - and the remains of the deed, matter with which we the living must deal. There is the death of a family greyhound shown with grief and simplicity, the violent death of a criminal killed on Mann's property and the gore of that event and aftermath, a series of views of dead bodies in a morgue, and dark landscape survey of Antietam (a battlefield fro the Civil War) that is haunting and all too reminiscent of ongoing battlefields we still create, and finally some views of her own children's faces.
The camera techniques include ambrotypes and modes of developing that are both difficult and rewarding. One is left with the impact of the fine line between life and death and that vacuum that exists when one becomes the other. Some may find this particular portfolio difficult to see, but perhaps those people will gain the most from Sally Mann's meditations on life and death. Grady Harp, January 2004
it was the kids.......2004-01-11
i always wondered if mann was a truly gifted artist or if her subjects and locations were just so compelling that anyone could have captured incredible images if they happened to be present.
this book confirms the latter.
these photographs are flat, uninteresting, not compelling for me in any way.
Maybe she needs to find some new prepubescent girls and go back to the child-erotica.
The controversial nature of her images were what vaulted her to fame.
it surely was not talent.

Customer Reviews:
great book for and "interesting" time.......2007-01-09
What a great book this is - I bought it for my daughter who is at an age where she has lots of questions - some easy to ask, some not. This book has provided a save place for those questions along with work sheets to get her "journaling". I have and will recommend this book to my friends with daughters this age (11+).
Highly recommended.......2004-05-27
I have been reviewing books for girls who are in their preteen years. The interactive book I like best is "Girls: What's so Bad about being Good?" (Authors: Harriet Mosatche and 12 year-old daughter Liz Lawner). The format is teen friendly and inviting. A wide range of topics will captivate young readers. The book is written in a format that will guide and encourage young women to make positive choices. Highly recommended.
Excellent Book.......2001-08-18
This book has everything I was looking for. The best part was that the information was down to earth, stuff I can actually use in my life. When I had my copy at camp, all the other girls kept grabbing it so they could read it too!

CADAVER DOG HANDBOOK.......2005-09-25
This is an excellent book! Great for the civilian SAR Dog Handler or a person jutst doing research on the subject.
Tremendous resource book (especially for the Novice and/or Advanced SAR Dog Handler) for trouble shooting Handler/SAR Dog problems and maintaining a training program/profile.
Could also be utilized in conjunction with a qualified/competent instructor.
Best Reference Book Out There.......2002-01-28
I found this handbook well written, organized and thorough. A must have for anyone interested or involved in this specialized field of cadaver dog handlers.
Great information and an easy read to boot...........2002-01-24
For the starting cadaver dog handler this book is a must. I recommend it to all my students. It does an excellent job of detailing the scent imprinting training, establishing a readable alert and the advancement of training. Not only does it cover the handling and training of the dog but discusses in depth the handlers responsibilities and information useful to any agency wishing to deploy the cadaver dog. Excellent information in a basic readable form. Not much experience in scent work needed prior to implementing these techniques. A wealth of information.

Thank you Emily.......2006-11-08
Emily's exquisite heartfelt feelings written in "When Only The Love Remains" continue to help me deal with the tragic death of my beloved 5-1/2 year old Golden Retriever Seajay several years ago. Thank you Emily as you encourage those who are experiencing the pain of loss of a beloved pet know that the love remains, forever in their heart. Jeri
Stuparyk's writing lifted my broken spirit like the wings of an angel..........2005-12-26
For anyone who has loved and lost a beloved pet, I highly recommend "When Only the Love Remains" by Emily Margaret Stuparyk. Her words will heal a broken heart and connect your soul eternally with your pet's soul. She understands the pain of pet loss because she has experienced it. I was devastated at the loss of my bunny, a Dwarf girl named Cinderella Rubi, who lived for only two years. Emily's writing lifted my broken spirit like the wings of an angel and reflect hope and belief in the afterlife. I have learned that although my beloved Cinderella is with her Creator now, she left me a legacy of love that lives on as my inheritance. This love will continue to grow for I will always remember my precious rabbit friend. I treasure this book and also you, Emily.
Moving Account of One Woman's Loss Helps Us All.......2004-09-18
My beloved kitty companion of nine years died suddenly on September 16, 2004 - as I write this, just three days ago. The totally unexpected loss of Sugarpuss is a terrible shock. Stuparyk's book was recommended to me that morning and I immediately ordered it on one day delivery from amazon (and I might add it arrived on the 17th as promised - thank you, amazon). I read most of it in one sitting, crying as in my mind I put my kitty in the place of Stuparyk's beloved rabbit, Poochie, who also died on September 16th several years ago. The poems are moving, especially the final one, which is also used for the title of the book. I very much identify with the poem where the author wishes for one more chance to hold her bunny alive again, which is what I feel about my Sugarpuss. I know I will go to this book again over the next several weeks. I would particularly recommend this book of poems for someone who feels grief but has problems expressing it, or who feels "funny" being so emotional over the loss of a companion animal.
The best book on pet loss.......2004-02-23
The author could have been writing about my own pet. Her sincere, honest portrayal of her feelings touched me so much that I was able to write down my own feelings on paper about a much loved and missed pet. It was like she knew me and my pet. I could feel her pain of her loss--it matched mine. Her book gave me so many things to think about. I recommend this book highly and plan to share it with others who need help healing with the loss of a pet.
Great book for grieving pet lovers.......2003-11-08
Reading this book, while grieving for my cocker spaniel, helped me go through the tears, the emotional turmoil, the depression, and eventual glimmers of hope, that accompany the loss of a beloved pet. I recommend it highly.
Book Description
Links have recently been established between the study of death assemblages by archaeologists and paleontologists (taphonomy) and the application of physical anthropology concepts to the medicolegal investigation of death (forensic anthropology). Forensic Taphonomy explains these links in a broad-based, multidisciplinary volume. It applies taphonomic models in modern forensic contexts and uses forensic cases to extend taphonomic theories. Review articles, case reports, and chapters on methodology round out this book's unique approach to forensic science.

Useful and Outstanding.......2007-04-07
I am a law enforcement officer who is also a search and rescue coordinator. I am occasionally tasked with providing SAR management and resources during forensic searches. I bought the book after my interest was piqued. However, this book has turned out to be INCREDIBLY useful. The section on animal scavangeing (article after article--bears, canine, rodents, insects) is very useful for ME/coroners or LEO. There's some science, but nothing you can't understand if you stayed awake in high school(!) Virtually every time a new question comes up, it's in the book. I'm currently studying the transport of remains in water. If you need this kind of knowledge, the definately buy the book.
Great place to start.......2006-03-08
Comprehensive review of what happens after death. It's a great book to launch a more in-depth study.
very complete.......2005-09-23
a good textbook for class or for following along with your favorite tv. show.
Overview of the field of forensic taphonomy.......1998-10-16
Haglund and Sorg have done an excellent job of compiling and assembling information about the diverse field of taphonomy. The authors chosen to contribute to this volume are the leaders in their respective sub-disciplines and are illustrative of the many forms taphonomy can take. They further demonstrate that taphonomy is no longer considered just as: the study of skeletal assemblages in paleoecological and archaeological settings. It is a growing, diversifying, multi-faceted field. Students of taphonomy will find references in this book invaluable. In short: it will be your greatest resource in taphonomical studies.
Book Description
Teeth yield remarkable information about animals as well as the health, hygiene and diet of ancient communities. In this fully revised and up-dated edition of his classic text, Simon Hillson draws together a mass of information on dental studies in archaeology and related disciplines. The book's treatment of mammals is extended to include mammals of North America and Asia north of the Himalayas. The form of roots are now detailed with figures showing root socket patterns in different genera. The new edition also includes an appendix on methods. Customer Reviews:
A nice text book, although incomplete.......2007-10-10
This is really a nice text book, with excellent illustrations of a wide variety of mammalian teeth. Althought it is intended for archaeologists, it will be of great use for zoologists and paleontologists. The book is divided into two parts: a first one (chapter 1) describing and figuring teeth for several mammal species; and a second one (chapters 2 to 5) on general topics such as dental tissues, criteria for age determination, variation of size and morphology in populations, etc. This second half is the best part of the book. The first one is right, but some important aspects of the morphology are not described, and there are errors in some descriptions (I have noticed that in the case of rodents). Furthermore there are important omisions (in the case of hystricognathous rodents, only the capybara is presented). Teeth of reptiles, amphibians and fishes are neither presented nor discussed. There are an important number of errata in the figures. I hope that forecoming editions of "Teeth" will solve these problems and errors and will provide more detailed descriptions of the specimens.
After all, a good text book for archaeologists and paleontologists.
