    —New York magazine

"As the most detailed and thorough account available of the dual system, Derrick's book has improved out understanding of rapid transit politics and urban planning."
—The Journal of American History, June 2002

In 1910, New York City was bursting at the seams as more and more people crowded into a limited supply of housing in the tenement districts of Manhattan and the older areas of Brooklyn. With no outlet for its exploding population, and the burgeoning social problems created by the overwhelming congestion, New York faced a serious crisis which city and state leaders addressed with dramatic measures. In March 1913, public officials and officers of the two existing rapid transit networks shook hands to seal a deal for a greatly expanded subway system which would more than double the size of the two existing transit networks.

At the time the largest and most expensive single municipal project ever attempted, the Dual System of Rapid Transit set the pattern of growth in New York City for decades to come, helped provide millions of families a better quality of life, and, in the words of Manhattan borough president George McAneny (1910-1913), "proved the city's physical salvation." It stands as that rare success story, an enormously complicated project undertaken against great odds which proved successful beyond all measure.

Published in conjunction with the History of the City of New York Project.

    2 out of 5 stars A political-financial history of the "Dual Contracts".......2001-08-24

Peter Derrick's book covers the "Dual Contracts" era of subway construction in New York, when numerous lines were built between 1910 and 1931 by the IRT and the BRT /BMT. Derrick focuses on the interactions between executives of the then-existing subway companies and municipal politicians. Only a few paragraphs cover the "Independent" subway system, which was built after 1931.

Endnotes, bibliography, etc., comprise 155 pages of this book, or nearly a third of its pages. There are eight maps and 24 period photographs. There is nothing in this book about station design, track layouts, operating procedures, or rolling stock. In fact, the book ends when construction began. It was a worthy endeavor of historical research to document the political deal-making of this period, but some readers may be disappointed that the author's interest was solely in the back-room political gamesmanship that preceded construction

5 out of 5 stars New York City's Pivotal Moment.......2001-04-15

No other historian has identified so important a piece of NYC's history on which so little is known, and written so lucidly about it. This is not just enjoyable history. You cannot understand New York City today without reading Derrick's book.

The greatest city of the modern era had its pivotal moment early in the 20th century with the decision in 1913 to double the size of its subway system: the largest public-works expenditure in the Western Hemisphere to that date. This decision, a dozen years and more in the making and led by Manhattan Borough President George McAneny, was propelled by the inability to resolve the problems of disease, crime, prosititution, overpopulation and poverty that overwhelmed Manhattan's Lower East Side, spilling into more affluent neighborhoods throughout the city. Getting employees out of impoverishment and to their jobs was now an impediment to development and modernization. The vision that turned farm lands into an urban center was a leap into the unknown and Derrick meticulously details this exciting chapter in NYC's history, a chapter that when fully understood, reveals how issues get resolved and great accomplishments propelled. In comparison, the highway system of the Robert Moses era was but an anxilary event.

Had Gotten this Many Years Ago in conjunction with the 2000 Ephemeris Book and A Few Books That Explain The Intricracy of Astrology Reading[Natal Chart Interpretation]. Found this to be more elaborate in regards to each planet 'placement' or transit; however, rather than stick with one point of view, always search for different perspective(s) from different authors. Truth comes from many angles than just one.

5 out of 5 stars A must for book for anyone.......2007-09-27

Planets in Transit is a must for both professional astrologers and lay people. It contains explanations of transits and basic astrological knowledge. I recommend it for anyone interested in transit astrology.

1 out of 5 stars do not be misled.......2007-06-10

Astrology is a dead end. It has produced nothing but heartache for our family. I cannot recommend the book to anyone. The notion that the stars control/affect us only has as much power over anyone as he or she allows it to have. Before reading this book ask yourself two questions: 1) would I rather have my life be dependent upon the man who wrote this book or The Maker of this man? and 2) Would I like to wait for "the heavens" to tell me what to do or would I rather be worshipping The Maker of said heavens? It's easy to pass off the bad circumstances in our lives becaue "Mercury is in retrograde" or "it's a month before your birthday" or "all things happen in threes" instead of looking at the responsibility we have to change our circumstances and live up to our mistakes. This book does not reform behavior, instead it condones any amount of carrying on because, after all, the world is set on its own course and there's not much that can be done....ridiculous. If you want to base your life on superstition then this is the book for you. BUt if you're looking for Truth, try Jesus Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Kick-start your understanding of the Composite Chart.......2007-04-06

Robert Hand's talent is making something radically new seem familiar and usable by the beginner.

When I first read this book, I was an intermediate level astrologer looking to expand my skills in the reading of client relationships. At the time of its first publication, Planets in Composite was all that was available on Composites, so I was grateful for its existence.

Now, after thirty-five years as a professional astrologer, I still pick it up when I need to jog my memory about a particular aspect, or house position. It's the best cookbook around on the "purpose" of a relationship.

4 out of 5 stars much practical advice for transit planning.......2006-09-24

How to plan an urban transit system of buses and trains? Vuchic offers a text suitable to accompany an undergraduate course in urban planning. It describes many aspects of transit. Like the ability to have articulated buses that have capacities 50% greater than standard buses. By using these on dedicated bus lanes, overall transit capacity can be enhanced. We see how multiple public agencies need to cooperate, to let such methods achieve optimal potential.

Rail transit is extensively studied. Including the all-important aspect of scheduling. There is some maths required of the student. But the text is not a fully fledged foray into scheduling theory. Chapters have numerous exercises that help the reader gain some fluency in understanding scheduling.

Another related aspect is the geometry of transit lines. How to best lay out these lines. We see that there are systematic mathematical ideas that can be applied. It's not just some qualitative handwaving.

    Book Description

The Transit of Venus is considered Shirley Hazzard's most brilliant novel. It tells the story of two orphan sisters, Caroline and Grace Bell, as they leave Australia to start a new life in post-war England. What happens to these young women--seduction and abandonment, marriage and widowhood, love and betrayal--becomes as moving and wonderful and yet as predestined as the transits of the planets themselves. Gorgeously written and intricately constructed, Hazzard's novel is a story of place: Sydney, London, New York, Stockholm; of time: from the fifties to the eighties; and above all, of women and men in their passage through the displacements and absurdities of modern life.

"Engrossing, masterly. . . . Combines the satisfaction of a family saga . . . with a highly structured plot reminiscent of Greek tragedy."-- Gail Godwin, The New York Times Book Review

"A wonderfully mysterious book. . . . Both plot and characters are many layered. Unforgettably rich."-- Anne Tyler, The New Republic

"Luminous. . . . Almost without flaw. Aphoristic and iridescent, her language turns paragraphs into events."-- Webster Schott, The Washington Post Book World

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Sooo strange!.......2007-06-07

I'm obviously not a very bright person as most of this book was a struggle to understand what on earth she was on about. I've read the glowing praises of the majority of the reviewers and can only conclude that it's far too clever for my simple understanding. To read and enjoy a book, I must have some liking for some of the characters, but the way M/s Hazzard rushes on like a freight train, bombarding the reader with unfinished sentences and words which would require even a moderately well educated person to have to dive for the dictionary, is just too much for me. I've decided that life is too short for me to waste any of my limited remaining years battling with this smarty pants, clever book, and to enjoy the many books that I've yet to read.

5 out of 5 stars A Romance, a Coming of Age Story that continues into Middle Age.......2006-11-22

It is almost audacious of me to attempt a review of this book. I don't have anything close to the command of language that Hazzard and some of her dedicated reviewers here do. Nevertheless, this is a favorite book of mine, despite what are, in my perception, some flaws, and I wanted to put in a good word for it.

First of all, let me assure my fellow readers that this book is in fact a romance, though a complex one. When I first read the book some 20 years ago, I was a young woman coming of age, on my own for the first time, and it spoke to me in a very personal way. Since then I've continued to dip into the book, parting the pages at random, to enjoy the author's language and her original characterizations, and particularly her descriptions of what it was like to come of age in a pre-feminist era. Here's a description from the novel, abridged and quoted somewhat out of order, of a working class career girl's life in the 1950's.

"Girls were getting up all over London....It is hard to say how or why they stood it, the cold room, the wet walk to the bus, the office in which they had no prospects and no fun....All the girls of London shuddered, waiting for the bus. Some had knitted themselves unbecoming brown Balaclavas, with worse mittens to match. Some held a boiled egg, still hot, in their glove--which warmed the hand, and could be eaten cold at lunchtime in the ladies' room."

I also enjoyed the novel's unusual evocations of time and place--- a child's upbringing in Australia; rural England during WWII; a WWII prison camp in Japan; the British workplace in the 1950's. Given the number of negative reviews on this site, I must warn that Hazzard examines these eras briefly, and the philosophic currents of each are merely alluded to, not explained. Hazzard trusts her reader to be familiar with the attitudes and undercurrents of each era, and simply alludes to them, while keeping her focus tightly on the characters in the novel.

Hazzard introduces scientific fact, political tragedy, and geographical oddities in a poetic way, which inspired me to further research: The best example of this her description of the Transit of Venus, an astronomical occurrence and the central metaphor for the novel; and a visit to Avebury Circle, a prehistoric monument which is rather less well known than Stonehenge.

I have two major frustrations with the novel.

    1. That Caro is seen by the author as someone so morally upright and exemplary in character as to be practically separate from the rest of humanity. I found myself resenting Caro's beauty and moral perfection, and waiting for Howard Roark to bust in through the door with the rest of the Ayn Rand characters.

    2. That, even as I repeatedly congratulate myself for finding the clue on the first page, I was incredibly impatient with the vagueness of the description on the last page. For years I simply wasn't completely sure how the novel ended. I trust that I've figured it out now, but I'd be curious to know if anyone else struggled a bit with the ending.

4 out of 5 stars Ms. Austin Would Be Pleased.......2006-02-24

While taking a rather different direction from Jane Austin, the picture of shifting class options, alignments, and calculations reminds one of Pride and Prejudice. Shirley Hazzard's writing is lucid and clear, her comparisons illuminating. Although not as much so as the Great Fire, it is a book of great economy in telling a great story well.

5 out of 5 stars Underappreciated from the Land Down Under.......2006-01-22

Shirley Hazzard is Australian by birth, but her extensive life experiences make her a wise world citizen. After winning the USA National Book Critics' Award in 1980, this book should get more attention than it does. An amazing love triangle forms the plot, but it's the writing that takes my breath away, as well as the post WWII history on three different continents and the vividly drawn characters. I'll admit I had trouble getting into it at first, but persistence paid off so that by the startling revelations at the end of the book, I was ready to start it again.

1 out of 5 stars I think Ms. Hazzard owes me an apology........2005-10-20

The only reason I finished "The Transit of Venus" was the hope of any improvement. This book took away two hours of my life-two hours that I can never earn back by reading true literature. The story (is there a story?) is dreadful. The sentence structures, the paragraph performances, the offered descriptions assist in one wondering if Ms. Hazzard is merely attempting to impress the audience with her self-perceived insights. I will never recommend this book to any audience. Ms. Hazzard and her publisher should refund my money.

    Book Description

Along the Way is a tour through New York's underground museum of contemporary art, works commissioned by MTA Arts for Transit for the subway system. Vivid murals by Roy Lichtenstein and Romare Bearden convey the energy of Times Square while Robert Wilson's Coney Island Baby captures the festive spirit of the city's playland. Currently underway are a photographic installation by Mike and Doug Starn at the new Fulton Street Transit Center and an intricate skylight by James Carpenter at the South Ferry complex.

Initiated in 1985, this collection of site-specific public art now encompasses more than 150 pieces in mosaic, terra-cotta, bronze, faceted glass, and mixed media. The program takes its cue from the original mandate that the subways be "designed, constructed, and maintained with a view to the beauty of their appearance, as well as to their efficiency." Arts for Transit is committed to the preservation and restoration of the original ornament of the system and to commissioning new works that will exemplify the principles of public art, relating directly to the places in which they are installed and the community around them.

Introduction by noted actor Stanley Tucci, who has been riding the New York City subways for the past thirty-five years.

A much desired book, this "manual" is a colorful, handsome guide to the art in New York's subway system as well as train service into the city from various geographical locations. Copy is an excellent introduction to the artists who created the art, and photos give a teasing glimpse of the art itself. Value may have been elevated with more photos, but that is a minor carp!

      Book Description

Transit-oriented development (TOD) seeks to maximize access to mass transit and nonmotorized transportation with centrally located rail or bus stations surrounded by relatively high-density commercial and residential development. New Urbanists and smart growth proponents have embraced the concept and interest in TOD is growing, both in the United States and around the world.

New Transit Town brings together leading experts in planning, transportation, and sustainable design -- including Scott Bernstein, Peter Calthorpe, Jim Daisa, Sharon Feigon, Ellen Greenberg, David Hoyt, Dennis Leach, and Shelley Poticha -- to examine the first generation of TOD projects and derive lessons for the next generation. It offers topic chapters that provide detailed discussion of key issues along with case studies that present an in-depth look at specific projects. Topics examined include:

Case Studies include Arlington, Virginia (Roslyn-Ballston corridor); Dallas (Mockingbird Station and Addison Circle); historic transit-oriented neighborhoods in Chicago; Atlanta (Lindbergh Center and BellSouth); San Jose (Ohlone-Chynoweth); and San Diego (Barrio Logan).

New Transit Town explores the key challenges to transit-oriented development, examines the lessons learned from the first generation of projects, and uses a systematic examination and analysis of a broad spectrum of projects to set standards for the next generation. It is a vital new source of information for anyone intersted in urban and regional planning and development, including planners, developers, community groups, transit agency staff, and finance professionals.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Unimaginative.......2004-09-26

Having worked extensively with Liz Greene on the Psychological Astrology series, one might expect Howard Sasportas to have given us an equally compelling study of the transpersonal planets here. Right? Well--No. Sasportas' prose is tedious, uninformative and unimaginative and has what I find to be a strongly materialistic bias. Perhaps its a case of complementarity, with Sasportas playing the dry Freud to Jung's lushness, but there is no mythic imagination or Jungian amplification of symbols here. I finally sold this book, my further searches leading me to far better studies, including R. Tarnas "Prometheus the Awakener" (a superb post-Jungian amplification of Uranus), Liz Greene's own masterpiece, "Astrological Neptune" and her "Outer Planets and Their Cycles" (the latter still excellent after all these years). Jeff Green's work, "Pluto: Evolutionary Journey of the Soul" is also highly regarded. But don't buy this one unless you're looking for a literalist, quasi-Freudian view of psychology with no symbolic interpretations, no amplification and little real psychology.

The BEST book on the transits of the outer planets - by far. Indispensable for any astrologer - beginner to expert.

Particularly useful if used in conjunction with a graphic ephemeris as done by WinStar - the astrology program. You can do a 50 year graph of the outer planet movements seeing all activations of 45 degree aspects at a glance. See what happened in the past to predict pretty accurately what will happen in the future - after all time is just a construct!

      5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!.......2002-12-02

I have gone through 4 or five of the Natal Horoscopes of friends and relatives while consulting this book.. of course, centering on utilizing -and checking it's accuracy and usefulness- via my own Natal chart.

Personal revelations can be -and are- hard won. Anything that encompassess the Natal Chart concerning the Outer planets can be from original spaces, early trauma, overall unconcious behavior and trends, and deep early learning and leanings. The colors of your life, basically. What and where you come from...and move to. Does your direction and the understanding of that -in depth, aid you or harm you? Unconcious behaviour in overall drive..can only lead to harm within one's self and others..as....there is no one at the wheel.

That is not a good thing. One must mind the steering, otherwise one wanders off course; and it's hard to pull out of the ditch. of course..one must be in the ditch.. before they realize they were not paying attention to who, or what was driving! The planets form the road; the shape direction and lean to it...and it is up to you to pay attention to where things are directed to. Just like the song said:" Keep your eyes on the road, and your hands upon the wheel".

It's too bad the learnings of youth teach one nothing of such behaviour..but then again, how can one learn if they never fall off the road? The more times you fall of the road, and get back on..the more you learn to not to do it again. (I've worked hard {seriously!} at becoming an expert at that) I think I can stop hammering myself now...

Of course, finding such a book helps one find inroads to understanding one's own particular flavour of reptitious self- damage. I explained this once to a friend, I used it as a way of expressing to them, hopefully..a way in which they could begin to see how to deal with finding a way into their own depths. Each case is different:
      ~~~
      " One way to look at some aspects of life is: We all have these glass walls we look out from behind, that restrict and control our movement and direction. We usually cannot see the edges or shape or position of these glass walls we live within -they are too huge and too close to us. They are utterly transparent to the one who is contained by them...we cannot even find the edges! Although... we can see those walls within/upon others, and in that moment of interaction...catch a glimpse of the reflection of our own. Tell me what you see in me..."
      ~~~

Sometimes I hammer people into anger, and get them to actually open their minds. (last resort!) They get angry and blurt something out... and are then mollified and confused, as I sit there and smile...and thank them for having an opinion or viewpoint...because without it, and moments left unspoken, we would get nowhere in life. I want to give them a big hug when they get angry...there...it finally came out..I'm happy now! The 'Moment Of Change' begins...at last!

The basic patterns of our lives that we keep repeating...(wheels within wheels) and when the next or current crisis may come from. Standing to the side for a moment..and learing to look up and down the road...for once. Seeing those patterns of behaviour erupt and repeat within the lives of loved ones, friends and associates. Witnessing the layers of the activity and motions within their existence. Like John Lennon said: " I'm just sittin' here watching the wheels go round and round..I really love to watch them roll...."

This book allows one to gain egress into the understanding of what the outer planetary motion means in the course of one's life..and in early life Natal Chart considerations. It can, and will create many poignant (eureka!), and quite likely difficult moments within the self, and bring one closer to being clear on where (and when!) they come from, and are going to. 'Suffering is the short road to spirt', they say.

The house positions for each planet, in transit (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) are fully and clearly covered. The Transits formed with all planets from Sun to Pluto are covered for each of the three. The psychology and origins (mythological-base truth) of each of the influences of the three Outer Planets are very neatly and nicely covered in a very complete way. There is little left to be misunderstood, or questioned afterwards. What this means is, that it is well stated by the Author what he feels the situations involving (and surrounding) these planets is -and can be.

There is little for you to be lost in, as for questing for an answer that cannot be found. Relatively speaking, the directions for you to find that place within yourself to find -and deal- with your own crisis, is defly and fully laid out. The book will enable you to find answers..which is what the book is all about..and thus, makes the book worth it's weight in gold. Things become clear enough, that you will be able to transpose that to understanding as to what may be occuring for other people, which many here are interested in doing. Ie, Astrologers; budding or otherwise.

Inluded, is a list of suggested further reading, which contains the names of associated texts to chase after and absorb, which can lead to further understanding in areas where one may be stymied within themselves, or to extrapolate that understanding..once again, in the serivce and care of others.

Definitlely worth buying, and is a "Must Have' for anyone dealing with the subject of Astrology. Hard for a person new to Astrology (like me!) to state such, but I believe that this statement will hold true in anyone's analysis of this text.

5 out of 5 stars Great accessible psychological guide to major transits.......2002-03-21

The late Howard Sasportas packed a huge amount of high quality astrological and psychological information into this intelligent, clear and accessible book. It has been one of my constant companions over the last 10 years or so, both in my work as a professional astrologer and in following my own transits of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

The first section, "The Collaboration with the Inevitable", is an excellent summary of how astrology can be used as a tool for understanding ongoing personal transformation, helping to turn perceived crises into opportunities. Sasportas then moves on to look in great detail and depth at the transits of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto to each planet in the natal chart. A very large number of case histories are dotted throughout the transit interpretations, with a wide range of examples of how each planetary combination can show up in daily life. These possible events are considered in the context of the psychological development of the individual, Sasportas drawing on his extensive knowledge of many fields of psychology, mythology and spirituality.

Much of the astrological material here is similar to other classic transit books such as those by Robert Hand, Betty Lundsted or Stephen Arroyo (who Sasportas acknowledges), but Sasportas has masterfully integrated a huge number of additional psychological and spiritual insights from many sources. The Gods Of Change is a wise and compassionate conribution to modern astrology.

I think we were robbed when Howard passed some years ago, he was a brilliant, self aware and humble astrologer who had a message and got it out to those who loved his work. He is sadly missed. This is the best book on transits out there in my opinion as it takes in the whole not just the day to day things that many transit books take into account. The inner workings of transits from the outer planets. I love this book.

      Book Description

Around the world, mass transit is struggling to compete with the private automobile, and in many places, its market share is rapidly eroding. Yet a number of metropolitan areas have in recent decades managed to mount cost-effective and resource-conserving transit services that provide respectable alternatives to car travel. What sets these places apart.

In this book, noted transportation expert Robert Cervero provides an on-the-ground look at more than a dozen mass transit success stories, introducing the concept of the "transit metropolis" - a region where a workable fit exists between transit services and urban form. The author has spent more than three years studying cities around the world, and he makes a compelling case that metropolitan areas of any size and with any growth pattern-from highly compact to widely dispersed-can develop successful mass transit systems.

Following an introductory chapter that frames his argument and outlines the main issues, Cervero describes and examines five different types of transit metropolises, with twelve in-depth case studies of cities that represent each type. He considers the key lessons of the case studies and debunks widely-held myths about transit and the city. In addition, he reviews the efforts underway in five North American cities to mount transit programs and discusses the factors working for and against their success. Cities profiled include Stockholm; Singapore; Tokyo; Ottawa; Zurich; Melbourne; Mexico City; Curitiba, Brazil; Portland, Oregon; Vancouver, British Columbia; and others.

The Transit Metropolis provides practical lessons on how North American cities can manage sprawl and haphazard highway development by creating successful mass transit systems. While many books discuss the need for a sustainable transportation system, few are able to present examples of successful systems and provide the methods and tools needed to create such a system. This book is a unique and invaluable resource for transportation planners and professionals, urban planners and designers, policymakers and students of planning and urban design.

5 out of 5 stars inspiring and diverse.......2007-05-07

I've been very pleased with this book for its analysis of a variety of different city types and its recognition that different cities require different types of transit to really make public transit viable there. From Copenhagen's trains connecting downtown to densely populated "fingers" of growth to Ottawa's busways and Curitaba's extremely innovative and economic system, this book provides enough real life examples to see how transit can be tailored to fit any city, and vice versa.

You can't say enough about this excellent survey of modern transit. Expect this book to inspire you!

      5 out of 5 stars paradigm shifter.......2005-02-08

I read this book a few years ago and it opened my eyes forever. Instead of moaning, "What will we do about all of these cars?" I have framed the question, "What the h. is wrong with the United States?" Prior to reading this book, I had only the faintest ideas about what democratic transit planning would look like on a large scale. The answer, Switzerland!

I was fascinated by the descriptions of actual, real life functioning public transportation in Singapore and Scandinavia. This Is REAL, People!

Unfortunately, after reading this book, I have developed the understanding that until we get things right with democracy, we will not get right with transit in the US. As long as our local governments are puppets of real estate developers, we will build our transportation infrastructure to suit their need to maximize profits, rather than the needs of the people who have to live in the cities for centuries to come.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with broad scope........1999-06-07

Cervero does an excellent job presenting each case study and its lessons with regard to urban transportation. He studies cities from the United State, Europe, Asia, and Latin America which makes the book especially valuable. He introduces and explains different types and categories of urban transportation alternatives and their respective benefits and drawbacks. Excellent book, worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Getting to school.......2006-02-01

Of the many problems Americans frequently complain about, one has been lurking under the radar over the last several decades, and has occasionally surfaced in nasty fights at the state and local government level. This problem is that of transportation to and from college campuses. As the US population grows, the availability of open land goes down, and the number of college students increase, physical access to colleges has become a perennial issue in many states. I came to discover this in the past decade. First as a student, and now as a staff scientist at Arizona State University, I have been at ASU since 1994. In that time, I have watched parking at ASU go from great, to downright horrible.

Dr. Michael Crow became ASU's president in 2002, and since then, he has proceeded to enact numerous changes at ASU. One of them is the transformation of ASU from a commuter campus to a residential campus, and the associated loss of parking spaces inherent in such a change. As part of this, Dr. Crow had asked the students of ASU to form a task force to address transportation needs. I joined this task force, and as part of my duties, read a lot of books on transportation issues of college campuses. This is one of the books I read. I am glad I read this book. It examines transportation management at universities across the US, from large public schools, to small private schools, from schools in the countryside to schools in downtown. This book looks at the various aspects of transportation management, such as public transit, carpooling, greener forms of transit, correlating the demand and supply of parking on campuses, how to get schools and other government agencies to work together, etc, etc...

The book provides detailed case studies of how specific schools have handled their transportation needs for both their employees and students. Successes and failures are highlighted, and how both came to be. Details are given, such as costs, timelines, maps showing how transit plans were developed, charts correlating bus usage with ticket prices, etc... The primary conclusion reached by the book are similar to those I reached while working on the task force at ASU: reduce demand for car parking instead increasing supply. All in all, a great book that should be required reading for anyone who intends to work in the administration of a university or college. I do not give it five stars because it lacks examples from other countries, where cars are used less frequently than here in America.
