Book Description
The universe has its secrets. It may even hide extra dimensions, different from anything ever imagined. A whole raft of remarkable concepts now rides atop the scientific firmament, including parallel universes, warped geometry, and threedimensional sink-holes. We understand far more about the world than we did just a few short years ago -- and yet we are more uncertain about the true nature of the universe than ever before. Have we reached a point of scientific discovery so advanced that the laws of physics as we know them are simply not sufficient? Will we all soon have to accept explanations that previously remained in the realm of science fiction?
Lisa Randall is herself making these extraordinary breakthroughs, pushing back the boundaries of science in her research to answer some of the most fundamental questions posed by Nature. For example, why is the gravitational field from the entire Earth so defenseless against the small tug of a tiny magnet? Searching for answers to such seemingly irresolvable questions has led physicists to postulate extra dimensions, the presence of which may lead to unimaginable gains in scientific understanding. Randall takes us into the incredible world of warped, hidden dimensions that underpin the universe we live in, describing how we might prove their existence, while examining the questions that they still leave unanswered.
Warped Passages provides an exhilarating overview that tracks the arc of discovery from early twentieth-century physics to the razor's edge of today's particle physics and string theory, unweaving the current debates about relativity, quantum mechanics, and gravity. In a highly readable style sure to entertain and elucidate, Lisa Randall demystifies the science and beguilingly unravels the mysteries of the myriad worlds that may exist just beyond the one we are only now beginning to know.

AMERICA'S GOT TALENT!!!.......2007-09-28
You really don't need my opinion because there are already over 100 reviews. I don't have a serious review to offer because the serious ones have already been done. I will agree with the best of them because this lady author has many great talents in putting such an amazing book together with such STYLE!!!! Many points of praise. I got this book in hardcover and decided I needed another one so I got two.
You go scientists!!!! Please continue writing books like this one that are so so delicious to read and well put together in SO many ways. Keep them (books) real long like this one (or even longer) and packed with lots of goodies. Brian Greene, I still LOVE your work also--ESPECIALLY The Fabric of the Cosmos, so Lisa Randall, Briane Greene and other talented scientists--keep on dishing out books like these that keep us wanting more more more!!!
SOME speculation is HEALTHY SCIENCE. Always know that there is A BEYOND EVERYTHING! Be certain of that. You scientists have now acquired an audience of the MASSES. We will be there to hail you or boo you like the jury of Q in Star Trek The Next Generation. We want more and better and more and better. Ha Ha Ha. Great work!
The Problem With Math.......2007-09-26
Randall, along with many other, such as Susskind The Cosmic Landscape: String Theory and the Illusion of Intelligent Design makes a serious mistake in leaping to the conclusion that reality corresponds to her mathematical models. Along with other string theorists, they assume that if the math they use to build their models contains some number of additional dimensions, then the real world must contain those dimensions. I see this in much of the literature, including, for example Woit Not Even Wrong: The Failure of String Theory And the Search for Unity in Physical Law who debunks string theory, but nevertheless seems to accept the idea that if the math contains extra dimensions, reality must also contain those extra dimensions.
A mathematical model is just that - a model. It is the best math we can construct at this point in time to describe the reality we are trying to model. It is not the reality itself. If the string theorists are successful in constructing a model that includes six or seven tiny dimensions, that does not mean that those dimensions actually exist. All it means is that the best model we can currently construct has to include those dimensions in the math. Susskind really goes off the deep end with this. We must remember that much more math will come along. Someday, we may have a math that describes the same reality without the additional dimensions.
That said, if the string theorists can make a prediction that absolutely, positively depends upon those extra dimensions and if that prediction is confirmed by experimental results, then they may have a case. So far, the string theorists have failed utterly to make such a prediction. Even here, a different math may come along. The night is young.
Readable!.......2007-09-24
In order to keep this short and sweet, this is a very readable book about string, superstring theory, and branes! An excellent job by the author! Also contains references to nice music lyrics and quotes! Fantastic book, highly recommended!
Randall re where we are........2007-08-24
Superb summary of contemporary cosmological crucial questions. Not not for the novice, but she writes so clearly--who knows?
Interesting, the idea is similar to the experiences left by some Buddists and Taoists.......2007-08-10
1.
Why not use any possible monitoring system to collect the local variatons in space as beings dying, being born and fertilizing? We may find something come from and go to some other dimensions or layers.
2.
According to some old chinese books of Buddhism and Taoism,(a) some Buddhists and Taoists could see the future, but they could not change the future, (b) the space is layered, (c) there is something called "the singular door and the invisible armour" in Taoism.
3.
The results of some experiments, such as experiments described in the book authored by "SHE DING MING", in hypnosis are seemly relevant to this dimensional idea.

Book Description
Most galaxies lie in clusters, where tidal interactions are a significant force. Tidal and dynamical interactions and the features they cause in galaxies are important to the study of galactic evolution. For example, a large amount of data has been collected on dust-lane ellipticals, polar-ring galaxies, spirals with extended warps, and galaxies with inclined HI rings or unusual "tails." This book is a record of a meeting held at the University of Pittsburgh that provided an informal, yet focused environment for the interaction of astronomers who have addressed these questions with a wide variety of skills, techniques, and points of view.
Book Description
Beginning with agoraphobia and claustrophobia in the late nineteenth century, followed by shell shock and panic fear after World War I, phobias and anxiety came to be seen as the mental condition of modern life. They became incorporated into the media and arts, in particular the spatial arts of architecture, urbanism, and film. This "spatial warping" is now being reshaped by digitalization and virtual reality.
Anthony Vidler is concerned with two forms of warped space. The first, a psychological space, is the repository of neuroses and phobias. This space is not empty but full of disturbing forms, including those of architecture and the city. The second kind of warping is produced when artists break the boundaries of genre to depict space in new ways. Vidler traces the emergence of a psychological idea of space from Pascal and Freud to the identification of agoraphobia and claustrophobia in the nineteenth century to twentieth-century theories of spatial alienation and estrangement in the writings of Georg Simmel, Siegfried Kracauer, and Walter Benjamin. Focusing on current conditions of displacement and placelessness, he examines ways in which contemporary artists and architects have produced new forms of spatial warping. The discussion ranges from theorists such as Jacques Lacan and Gilles Deleuze to artists such as Vito Acconci, Mike Kelley, Martha Rosler, and Rachel Whiteread. Finally, Vidler looks at the architectural experiments of Frank Gehry, Coop Himmelblau, Daniel Libeskind, Greg Lynn, Morphosis, and Eric Owen Moss in the light of new digital techniques that, while relying on traditional perspective, have radically transformed the composition, production, and experience--perhaps even the subject itself--of architecture.

abnormal psychology.......2002-11-29
As the title indicates, Vidler's recent publication guides us to see the underlying forces that caused warping and irregularity in contemporary architecture. Beginning with defining various conceptions of 'phobias', Vidler navigates us into the realm of abnormal psychology. Critical theorists, such as Georg Simmel and Walter Benjamin, are also introduced to interweave the ideas of 'estrangement' and 'flaneur(metropolitan nomad wandering unconsciously)'. In so doing, he allows readers to understand underlying mindset behind the buildings of Libeskind, Himmelblau, and Eric Owen Moss.
timely assessment.......2001-04-15
This is among the books that has given me a wholistic view of the design field- combining aspects of culture and society at the subliminal framework of understanding. It is a good read and very objective in its approach. I personally enjoy criticism and have read books by Victor Margolin and this one analyses the merits and demerits of a field that draws influences and in turn influences a wider spectrum of issues. It is interesting to perceive the manner in which the book uses a synchronic approach to arrive at a very comprehensive analysis of the current day status. For a young designer this book gives a lot of thought to treating design as a part of a larger framework. It forces one to think on larger issues that can be solved through design.

see me after class.......2006-08-24
I don't think I've ever read a memoir or autobiography that didn't shine most in its early pages, when recounting the author's childhood. It's certainly true of this one, though perhaps I'm biased, because I too grew up in NYC, attending public schools that, even 15 years after Mr. Koenig's experience, bore a spooky resemblance to his, down to the sadistic second-grade and mannish fifth-grade teachers. On the other hand, I'm not sure I've read another autobiography that began to fray quite as quickly as this one did. My complaints, briefly:
1) The edition of Warped Factors I read was published in 1997 by Taylor Publishing Company. Let's hope Taylor has a fantastic distribution system; that, or it took absolutely no cut from the income on this book other than printing costs--because I can't see that it did anything else that publishers ordinarily do, such as discuss coherence and continuity with the author, correct errors in grammar and vocabulary, or even read through page proofs. (There are lines in the book which lose their flush right margin all of a sudden, for no reason that I can see.) While the jumpy margins are just a strange printing phenomenon that might cause a reader to question an author's judgment but not literacy, literacy does become an issue over things like misspellings ("wildlife," not "wild life"), word choice ("formidable," not "formative," personality) and misquotes (I won't embarrass anyone here because I'm sure both the author and the publisher have had it pointed out already; if not: it's the quote that starts out Shakespeare and ends Robert Burns, and if that's still not enough, see me after class). Is it Los Angeles (see more below)? Is it that on The Coast, away from New York's literary elite, Mr. Koenig could not find anyone--a writer for the Simpson's, maybe?--who'd zip through his oeuvre and point out errors and awkwardness? Or, a more ominous thought, did he just want to do it his own way?
2) This leads to the more dismaying point--the author himself. And here I have to confess to being one of those 12-year-old girls who thought Mr. Chekov was the cutest thing since Davy Jones. I continue to be impressed with his wit and humor. However, I am left with the strong impression that he is too smart for Hollywood, and his book--deliberately, I think--gives no clues to why he stayed, except to keep insisting that he's neurotic and loves the craft of acting. Another reviewer made a comparison of Mr. Koenig to Woody Allen, and there's some truth there. I grew up with boys like Woody and Walter in the back of my classroom (that would be PS 169); they were kids who'd today be zonked out on ritalin or the equivalent; they were funny (to the kind of girl who appreciated the Three Stooges) and smart, even if they were underachievers--Bart Simpson with brains. Of course they were neurotic kids; the world and their mothers didn't know what to do with them. But most of them figured things out. By high school they were hitting their stride and maturing. That's what it boils down to: A 6-year-old boy is cute; a 46-year-old boy is . . . not cute. I read the autobiography of Grace Lee Whitney, who played Yeoman Janice Rand; she had bigger problems and fewer advantages, and yet she seems to have made some forward motion towards growing up. (Yes, I know Woody Allen's line: "I used to be a heroin addict; now I'm a methadone addict.")
I'm going to give Mr. Koenig the benefit of the doubt here. I'm going to assume that in private he's just as thoughtful, solid, grounded, and wise as any other man nearing retirement age. He made a decision in writing this book to eliminate information that would embarrass his family and friends but that might give the reader a clue to his personality and motivation as an adult. The result is a frolic of wacky anecdotes about a hapless, non-observant Jewish actor from New York who finds himself in Hollywood and who just never learns his lesson.
It sounds like a life in sitcom form. Maybe it's time for the Koenigs to relocate somewhere where if life is going to imitate anything, it will be art, not TV.
Neurotic is the word.......2005-06-24
Everybody knows that all the actors in Star Trek did their autobiographies, so , I thought, why not read this one? I was in for a surprise! I usually don't comment a book I didn't finish but maybe Mr Koenig should have seen a psychiatrist longer than in his youth. Why write something like that? Jokes are cheap, writing is erring at best, thoughts are at random (an editor, please!!!!) not much to say, really... He does have an interesting career but must he explain all his doubts and neuroses too? It is honest , I know, but I prefer to read about Career & Life...
I got fed up ... I would have read DeForrest Kelley instead...
If you want something really interesting to read about the less "principal" characters in Star Trek OS, go to Takei's or Nichols books: THAT is worth it!
Well written and insightful!.......2005-02-26
Walter Koenig writes candidly about his experiences with Star Trek and many other topics regarding his career as an actor and writer. His recollections of his years on the TOS is quite interesting and provides quite a bit of "behind the scene" glimpses of certain episodes..Being a die hard Trekkie, I found this book to be a very enjoyable read! I have also read the other supporting cast member's books and feel that Walter's is one of the most articulate and amusing..some of his recollections of his "life on the road" with James Doohan and George Takei making video store appearances are hilarious!
Walter also write deeply about his feelings toward William Shatner and reveals how hurt he felt on a couple of occasions..
After reading the other cast member's books you can't help but feel that there was "something" going on there...It's kind of like if you worked for a company for many years and are treated as if you were "nothing" and just a body to kick around..
I'm sure in life there are many who are placed into this role who feel extremely stressed and down..it's no different with actors I'm sure..However, Walter seemed to maintain his dignity throughout..sometimes in life you just have to live by "the golden rule"..Treat others as you would like to be treated.." I think if everyone followed this simple principle life would be grand!
Star Trek has given pleasure to many fans around the world and it is quite interesting to read the memoirs of cast members to truly see how the show has affected their lives and to laugh at their interesting anecdotes! There are plenty to be found in this book and asides from talking about Star Trek, Walter talks about his career as a struggling actor in the beginning and his later career as a writer. Walter writes very well and I feel he should write more books on other topics! He definitely has a talent in this area!
I've never watched Babylon 5 so I'm not familiar with his role as Alfred Bester but I have seen all 79 TOS episodes and all 6 of the films so I am quite aware of his work as Chekhov..It would be interesting to see Walter in some of his other work..As an example..I recently saw George Takei in "The Encounter"..a classic Twilite Zone spisode and was blown away by his acting! George's role was very powerful however, you were never really able to witness it much in Star Trek..I think that's why some of the other supporting cast members held some resentment towards Shatner because they felt that he was trying to minimize their contributions..hearing Shatner's take on it in the wonderful documentary, "Mind Meld" with Leonard Nimoy..you feel as if Shatner felt these claims were trivial and that he truly did not understand what these actors were going through..I really have a hard time believing that...Walter, although hurt by Shatner's behavior over the years still has a begrudging respect for him as do the others with the exception of perhaps..James Doohan.
Anyways, if you are a Trekkie this book is a must read and an important one to have in your collection! It's very entertaining and insightful!
This is NOT a Star Trek book.......2004-03-07
While a decent portion of the book focuses on Star Trek, most of it does not. This is a book about Walter Koenig, a self-admittedly neurotic actor. For me, this difference made the book very enjoyable. Here you will get a humorous look into the actor's life, complete with looking for work, working as a hotel package boy, dealing with agent's lies, and more. This book was a lot of fun.
Great book.......2002-12-10
I've just got into Star Trek and decided to read some of the books the cast wrote. The first book I read was Walter's book. He told some hilarious stories, but yet he told about the serious stuff too.
I've heard that some, if not all of the cast had issues with William Shatner. Walter could've made this a dirt book and tell about every dirty thing Shatner ever did to him. Walter didn't do that. He let it be known that he wasn't happy with some of the things Shatner did it on the set, but the whole book wasn't about that. I've read other books where stars and costars just let out all the bad feelings and the book turns out negative because it turns into 'I hate him because he did this and that, this and that, this and that- etc' I repeat that Walter's book ISN'T like that. It's worth a read if you are a Star Trek fan.

Great book!.......2007-06-11
My kids and I loved this book. It is full of great short stories. It would be a great book for a reluctant reader because the stories are so short. The reader can have many short, entertaining reading sessions without the chance of getting bored. While camping this past weekend my son retold many of stories from this book while we were sitting around the campfire. They really are great spooky campfire stories!
Spine Chiller!.......2007-04-04
This book is creepy but not to creepy, that's what I love about this book. Some of these storys are funny and creepy. My favorite story is "Nigh Fishing" its really creepy. I recomend this book to everone, Lubar strikes again!

The two boys see a copy machine and decide to use it. The older brother puts his younger brother's face on the copy machine and accidentally presses 1,000 copies. Then the older brother sits down on another to copy his behind. Then finally when the copies were over they see that their face and behind was gone! If you like the beginning you'll really like it in the end. I hope read this book and I hope you have a good time reading this!!

David Lubar strikes again with Invasion Of The Road Weenies, a book with a lot of funny stories. Two of my favorite stories were "The Dead Won't Hurt You" and "A Little Night Fishing." They are all good stories. They are not that long, but they are exciting.
David Lubar is a good writer. He had a lot of good books like Wizard Of The Game and Road Weenies 2#. They are really funny too. He was born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1954. He likes computer magazines. He lives in Oakwood PA. He got 2 awards for his books I give this book a ***** rating!!!!

Customer Reviews:
It scared me.......2007-03-16
This book made me afraid to sleep at night, especially "Crizzles". It just creeped me out. However, this is a great book and don't let my weak nerves deter you from reading this. It's written very well and has great charecters. Like the kid in the centipedes story.
On a side note, "The Road Weenies" wasn't nearly as creepy because no one died, I liked this one better
A Fun Read.......2007-02-21
This book has many stories of other kids' lives. Anyway these kids can be real monsters, literally. In one story the kids lift someone into the air, and he keeps going higher and higher then they all start floating. The book is In the Land of the Lawn Weenies.
I thought of this book as a weird fiction book. It doesn't make sense but, it's funny and really is a good book once you get into it enough to understand it, but it is a little confusing because it switches stories ever 5-6 pages. I don't care for the cliffhangers that are on it. I really want to find out the rest of those stories.
Perfect bedtime stories!.......2007-01-08
Although my son is 10 years old and quite a good reader himself, he still loves to be read to at night before bed. He says it relaxes him and he loves to listen to Mom (or Dad occasionally) reading the story.
This book and also Lawn weenies are perfect. They are just the right length, age appropriate, and I'll admit that they are interesting for me as well. Some stories I've sat and read to him are so boring and uninteresting for me that I can't wait to get through it. These stories are alot of fun to read.
Granted...you have to have a bit of an open mind and not mind creepy or off the wall stories. My family happens to love this stuff.
Great stuff!
Land of The Lawn Weenies.......2006-10-25
Land of the Lawn Weeiens is number one in all of the books I've read. It seems that you are in the sane place at the same time. The other reason is that this book has a series of stories not just one. Buy this book right here right now!!!!
Funny!.......2006-06-07
In the Land of the Lawn Weenies is a funny and yet, a little scary, type of book. Each chapter is like another story, as each of them tells you about different creepy tales. Dave Lubar is good at telling or writing stories. I read one chapter every night. My favorite chapter is "Crizzles". The story is about a grandpa telling his grandson and his grandsons friend a story about crizzles. "Grandpa said 'Crizzles look just like you or me,' then he pointed to danny (his grandson)' but on the inside they are all cold and hungry.'" Then he offers the guest to take a walk with him, of course he refuses after his story, so he stays with his friend. Then when his grandpa left he said "What a creepy story", and that crizzles sound pretty scary to danny. Danny then said that him and his grandpa were both crizzles and tonight it was dannys turn. "His face started melted away like wax."
Book Description
From jester to king, Guillaume sees the Current Middle Ages from every angle. In his second collection of humorous stories and insightful reflections, Guillaume looks at the lighter side of castle building, jousting on ESPN, learning Arthurian mythology (with the help of tequila), and making topiary animals out of duct tape. Plus, just to prove that no subject is beyond the scope of his irreverent sense of humor, he also shares the laughter and chaos that took place behind the scenes during two reigns as King of Caid. Whether by fate or an implausible disruption of the natural balance of the universe, Guillaume's readers are in for some royal laughs, and some touching moments, as the SCA's funniest knight wins the throne and seeks shelter from the reign in a deluge of hilarious stories, including:
- Spitting Distance from Chivalry
- Christmas Crazies: Forgotten Medieval Holiday Folklore
- Of Arms and the Knight I Sing
- To Find the SCA, Just Turn Right at Spiderman
- Fangs for the Memories: Medieval Halloween Monsters
- Reigny Days and Mondays

Entertaining if you are in the SCA- or just interested in the SCA.......2006-03-04
This is a humourous telling of Sir Guillaumel's first reign as King of Caid- some ripples of which even were heard up here in the West.
I recommend this book for any of the following:
Those in the SCA
Those interested in the SCA
Those thinking about "going for Crown" in the SCA!
and those that enjoy some slightly offbeat real-life humour, even if you have never even heard of the SCA.
Warning- do not read this book when drinking carbonated beverages!
Not quite up to the level of Terry Pratchett, so it only gets 4 stars.

Read-Aloud Plays: Middle Ages (Grades 4-8)
ASIN: 1877673463 |
Book Description
S-T-R-E-T-C-H Your Students Imagination.
The hilarious play in TIME WARPED remind us of "Fractured Fairy Tales" on the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon show. They take liberties with stories from history, with very funny results.
Use the plays as a great jumpstart to a history unit, good practice at deciphering fact from fiction, or just for the fun of it. Each play includes activities that involve finding out the truth about a historical time period.
The plays: "The Mummy's Purse," "The Idiodyssey," "The Schmikings", "There's No Ages Like the Dark Ages," and "Renaissance Reform School."

Customer Reviews:
Whoa! The Guide's Exactly Like This Game.......2007-04-25
My sister was the one who got the game in 1998, but then she beat it 100% and gave it to me (But took her memory card.). I completely love this game, and had problems on some of the Bonus Rounds and finding Colored Gems. But, this guide contains everything you need to know. Soon enough, with the help of this guide, I got 105%! That's right, after you get everything you can there's extra levels that boost your percentage upwards. But, this review's not about the game, so let's talk about the guide.
The Good:
- Every Move for Crash and Coco is Shown.
- Awesome tips for every boss, like the madman NGin.
- Walkthroughs of every level, getting most out of your way.
- Every character and secret shown.
- All hidden paths exposed.
- Funny jokes to laugh out on as you play the game.
The Bad:
- Sometimes puts jokes where there could be hints.
- Could have maps in it.
With this guide, you'll become a master of time!
Uneeded.......2000-10-30
