It seems that everyone in the world has an opinion on how to be healthy and how to eat right. I've read a lot of junk, and I'm happy to say that Valerie Saxion is right on the money. Why? Because I feel great, all the time. Sorry, very hokey, but very true. Her advice is really good, and shows meaningful ways on suppressing your appetite, eating healthier and finding the right supplements. She even included a directory of practicing naturopatic doctors in the United States. I'm thankful for this book, which uses Biblical examples on how the human body should work, and how to cleanse one's self of parasites, and other nasties. If you're serious about health, this book is a great start.

Boundless energy awaits anyone willing to trade their cigs, drugs, or lattés for the healthier alternatives prescribed in Natural Highs. According to authors Hyla Cass, M.D., and Patrick Holford, the first step toward bliss is eating right. In their lean yet satisfying nutrition chapter, they advocate a fairly even ratio of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats; plenty of water; high-potency multivitamins; and minerals. After establishing this balanced diet, those seeking to "get high" or "chill out" can select from a menu of natural supplements and substances: various stress busters, energizers, and mood enhancers that research shows can mimic--or surpass--the appealing effects of stimulants like caffeine, sugar, and nicotine or sedatives like dope, alcohol, and tranquilizers. Best of all, these good vibrations allegedly come without the typical letdowns or addictions. Historical tidbits, ample charts and diagrams, scientific data, and case studies from the authors' practices create a compelling argument for natural alternatives, including kava, ginseng, choline, and DMAE. Helpful sidebars outline the positive effects, cautions (rarely any), and recommended dosages associated with each item. Cass and Holford also delve into uplifting lifestyle enhancements like meditation, massage, dance, and sexual chemistry. Lots of reference material rounds out this guide to healthy--and legal--mood magic. --Liane Thomas

    Book Description

What does it take to make you feel "high"? Do you routinely reach for caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, or sugary snacks to get you through the day? Unfortunately, the quick fixes we have become accustomed to don't work long-term, and often contribute further to the underlying problems of fatigue, depression, brain fog, and anxiety.

In Natural Highs, two leading authorities in psychology and nutrition present a prescriptive breakthrough program based on nutritional supplements, herbs, and simple mind-body therapies that will help to increase energy, sharpen the mind, elevate mood, relax the body, and beat stress. Their remarkable research shows how to formulate the perfect "brainfood" to improve how we think and feel, resulting in a greater sense of connection and joy in everyday life-the natural high.

5 out of 5 stars It's always off the bookshelf.......2004-11-17

Once again I reached for Dr. Cass' book today. I've had it for about six months and it hasn't sat closed for any two weeks in a row. I've tried several items listed and found that some worked and some didn't. One of the greatest joys is replacing a pill or supplement with real food. I'd rather eat fish than a tablespoon of fish oil!

It took time to realize that the book is written for a general audience, not just for me. Now I'm working through her suggestions methodically, patiently weeding out those that aren't right for me and keeping those that are. For instance, I discovered that high potency vitamin B "complete" supplements work well with SAMe. On the other hand, valerian only caused bad dreams.

Used in conjunction with Chris Carmichael's "Food for Fitness" and some great web resources, I find that I have both high energy and a great attitude towards life and my health.

5 out of 5 stars Finally something useful!.......2003-11-16

I don't know about you, but I get tired of health & nutrition books that go on and on about technical details without supplying any real information I can use. That is why I have appreciated the direct approach taken in Natural Highs. The authors clearly explain how to feel better and why it works. The descriptions of neurotransmitters and brain chemistry are sufficient without becoming tiresome. The supplement recommendations are candid and well balanced. Important techniques such as breathwork and meditation are also covered. This book is readable and even entertaining. If you are curious about natural ways to relax or improve your mood, give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars This Book Rocks!.......2003-08-25

The advice in this book worked for me, it has many options to improve over-all health!

2 out of 5 stars OK, but not scientific.......2003-01-02

There is definitely some interesting information in this book, but the use of biased anecdotes and several totally false claims make it difficult to determine how much of the book can actually be trusted.

Overall it wasn't worth buying because I had to spend many hours doing my own research on the authors' claims. As always books that rely on anecdotes to back up claimed benefits should be viewed with suspicion.

Do you feel a sin coming on? Do you want to look cheap? Do you ignore your mother's well-meant advice? Anne Taintor is speaking your language. This first-ever collection of her wildly popular artwork celebrates the pleasures of being bad in a good girl's world. Taintor's sassy, saucy creations pair vintage illustrations with witty new slogans, and her well-mannered women enjoy deliciously less-than-well-mannered thoughts. ("Had she made him suffer enough...how could she be sure?") A collection of Taintor's best-loved images on the fun and folly of romance, I Can't Be Good All the Time includes nearly 100 images of nice ladies saying exactly what they mean - and it isn't pretty. We never said it would be pretty.

    Book Description

All in Good Time is a luminous memoir about growing up in the shadow of the golden age of songwriting and Sinatra, from the celebrated radio personality and novelist Jonathan Schwartz.

“Dancing in the Dark.” “That’s Entertainment.” “By Myself.” “You and the Night and the Music.” They are part of the American Songbook, and were all composed by Arthur Schwartz, the elusive father at the center of his son’s beautifully written book.
Imagine a childhood in which Judy Garland sings you lullabies, Jackie Robinson hits you fly balls, and yet you’re lonely enough to sneak into the houses of Beverly Hills neighbors and hide behind curtains to watch real families at dinner.

At the age of nine, Jonathan Schwartz began broadcasting his father’s songs on a homemade radio station, and would eventually perform those songs, and others, as a pianist-singer in the saloons of London and Paris, meeting Frank Sinatra for the first time along the way. (His portrait of Sinatra is as affectionate and accurate as any written to date.)

Schwartz’s love for a married woman caught up in the fervor of the sexual revolution of the 1960s, and his other relationships with both lovers and wives, surround his eventually successful career on New York radio.

The men and women who have roles to play include Richard Rodgers, Nelson Riddle, Carly Simon, Jimmy Van Heusen, Bennett Cerf, Elizabeth Taylor, and, of course, Sinatra himself.

Schwartz writes of the start of FM radio, the inception of the LP, and the constantly changing flavors of popular music, while revealing the darker corners of his own history.

Most of all, Jonathan Schwartz embraces the legacy his father left him: a passion for music, honored with both pride and sorrow.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars well written but disappointing.......2006-09-11

Like many others who read this, I was a teen in the 70's, and Jonathan Schwartz was a big part of my life, along with Scott Muni and the rest of the WNEW-FM team. And I've read other works by him and really enjoyed them.

But this book...this book left me thoroughly unmoved. He comes across as a somewhat spoiled child of priviledge, a kid who had so much and didn't value it at all. His bout with alcoholism comes across like a petulant episode, rather than a life-changing struggle.

What was particularly disappointing to me was his take on the music. Now, let me preface my remarks by stating that I've spent my whole life in the music industry...I have a lifelong love of music of all kinds, and a deep appreciation for Sinatra, and everything from classical to jazz to rock and beyond. That said, Schwartz comes across as caring little for the music he helped to popularize in the 70's. Yes, he has praise for many of the artists of the era, but in the end I was left with the feeling none of them, in his opinion, can hold a candle to Frank the Almighty. It's a disturbing impression from someone who, in my nascent days of discovering music and musicianship, was instrumental in opening my eyes to so much new music of the day.

Several years before reading the book, I emailed Schwartz with a question. Every evening he closed his show with a particular recording of Chopin's Prelude in E minor, played on flute and classical guitar, and I wondered who it was. He replied he couldn't recall. (Turned out to be Laurindo Almieda and Sali Teri...hope I spelled that right) At the time I was mildly surprised he'd not remember something he played literally every night for so many years, but after reading this book it only served to reinforce the feeling that, rather than having a true love of the music he was playing, he was in some sense just along for the ride. What a letdown.

5 out of 5 stars nothing ever goes away.......2006-06-03

when i was stressed out in medical school in brooklyn, i think jonathan schwartz saved my life. by that time, he was on the nytimes station, wqew, but his voice and his show were similar to the show he had on wnew. in his memoir, i hear the same distinctive voice and gift for storytelling that his show featured. in the age when radio was turning fom disc jockeys to programmers, he was a singular talent. and the music he introduced me to! sinatra, garland, cole, fitzgerald, nancy lamott, etc singing gershwin, cole porter, berlin, rodgers & hart. most of all, he intorduced me to nelson riddle and the idea that arrangements matter a great deal.he attracted many fans, including the voice of the mets, tim mc carver. and as a met fan, it made it all the more personal to me. i thought his memoir was wonderful, and yes, singular. as was his life story. all of it. i loved every word.

    2 out of 5 stars Whiny Autobiography.......2006-04-29

Several times during my reading of this book I said to myself, "This is one weird kid."

As so many other people in these reviews stated, Jonathan Schwartz is a great singer and DJ with a huge knowledge of his subject. But he comes across to me as thoroughly unlikeable in this book.

A good deal of the book talks about how terrible things have been , yet he never lacked for money. His dad and stepmom may have been quite odd (or eveil, in his stepmom's case), but he never lacked any material things.

Speaking of odd, didn't they take pictures in the Schwartz house? None are in this book, I would have liked to see some of his dad.

BTW, didn't Jonathan have one friend in any of the schools he went to?

4 out of 5 stars A memoir of one who seemed to know them all..........2006-01-30

For those of you familiar with the mellifluous tones of Jonathan Schwartz from XM73 or WNYC-FM, you will no doubt hear his voice as you read this engaging memoir. And for those of you who've never heard of him, you will be astounded by the who's-who list of people he's crossed paths with: Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Judy Garland, Carly Simon, Jackie Robinson, and of course, Frank Sinatra.

Despite a somewhat irritating quirk in his writing style -- related to some vague pronoun references that constantly had me asking: "Wait, what's he saying?" -- this is really a wonderful, interesting, and compelling memoir of a real Renaissance Man. Schwartz is and was a singer, composer, writer, American Songbook DJ, as well as album-oriented rock DJ (with the old WNEW-FM) who bravely reveals to us his hopes, sadness, loves, and demons. This is a book that builds as you go along.

    4 out of 5 stars surprisingly moving.......2004-12-02

As a 50 year old guy who grew up in New York, Jonathan Schwartz' unique voice and delivery were drummed into my head at a time when the FM radio band underwent a revolution, and I went through adolescence. Later, JS made quite a name for himself as a lover of Sinatra, and other great American songbook crooners. I always assumed he was something of a phoney, cashing in on a more mature sound when album oriented rock died away. This book, in a surprisingly moving fashion, tells his story as being a lover of the Great American Songbook from his early youth. It is quite an interesting read, sort of a non-fiction Holden Caulfield, with lots of true vignettes about celebrity friends of his father, songwriter-Broadway producer Arthur Schwartz. The chapters dealing with Jonathan's mother's death, and his brief stay in a psychiatric facility proved to me that JS is no phoney at all. He's a part of the New York scene.

        Book Description

"Once a man stood at the bar watching me intently, and when the set was finished he came over and said with a smile, 'You know, you can't be a respectable woman the way you play piano.'" This autobiographical incident is just one of the marvelous anecdotes recalled by Marian McPartland in her
book, All in Good Time. McPartland is one of the most famous contemporary jazz pianists. Brought up in England, she married the jazz trumpeter Jimmy McPartland after World War II and then settled in the U.S., where she built her career. She is also an articulate, knowledgeable, and entertaining
writer about jazz and this book collects the best of her articles, published over the years in magazines like Down Beat and Esquire.
There are wonderful portraits of two famous pianists: Mary Lou Williams, hailed as one of the finest composers and performers of her era, an artist of great spiritual resources who brought order to the chaotic world of modern jazz ; and Bill Evans, renowned for his introspective and evanescent
playing. Also profiled are two young bass players, Eddie Gomez and Ron McClure, then new to the scene but destined to have a lasting influence; and outstanding drummers Joe Morello (who began his career with McPartland and went on play with Dave Brubeck) and Jake Hanna (who played with Woody Herman
as well as with several small groups). Together, these descriptions of famous musicians -- almost all of whom McPartland has played with -- give the reader a special insight into how a jazz rhythm section meshes and functions.
The raffish atmosphere of 52nd Street ("Swing Street") in its heyday is superbly evoked in McPartland's reminiscence of the Hickory House, where she played in the 1950s to an audience that often included the likes of Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, and Steve Allen. The author provides a shrewd
and balanced assessment of another Hickory House habitue, jazz icon Benny Goodman; an affectionate and deeply moving portrait of her close friend, Alec Wilder; and a charming and revealing discussion with actor and occasional jazz pianist, Dudley Moore.
But one of the most exciting pieces in the book is her brilliant historical survey of the landmark all-female jazz orchestra of the 1930s and 1940s, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. McPartland's special interest in the position of women in jazz, often evident in this book, is best summed
up by her quip, "You've come a long way, baby; but you've always been there."

        4 out of 5 stars Decently Informative.......2005-06-28

When I found this book in the store, I had a hard time stopping reading it. I was too embarassed to buy it that day, but I returned a few weeks later and decided to go for it.
Reading it cover to cover doesn't take very long, which in some ways is good, and in others is bad. I like the fact that it describes (and sometimes there's a picture to go with it!) several non-traditional positions, what kind of person it is good for, and what it all does.
I did not, however, find the "orgasm-ing together" section very informative, mostly because I didn't like the idea of different stages. Not everybody has a partner they can see frequently and can therefore test that method out. There's got to be a better way than saying, "I'm level 8! How about you, darling?!" Something like that totally kills the mood, so I was disappointed that the ONE part of the book that I REALLY wanted to learn more about wasn't very thorough.
It's an enjoyable read; one that I'll lend to friends or have a partner read ;)

3 out of 5 stars Definately not a magic bean..........2004-08-03

After the great reviews on here and other places I purchased this book. I was more than disappointed. I read the whole thing in one sitting (less than an hour) and there was absolutely no advise given that hadn't been given before in even such places as Glamour or Cosmopolitan magazine. In addition the British wording of much of the book makes it a tad awkward for the average American reader. Add to that blatant grammatical issues and mispelled words, and you end up with a book that not only isn't giving you new information, but also which is frustrating just to read.
Honestly the premise of this book is that if you haven't had an orgasm then apparently you aren't psyching yourself up enough for it. Her approach is far too simplistic, her descriptions are lacking any actual guidance (basically all she says is, do what feels good until you come, umm duh!), and the whole book just was overall disappointing. There are far better books that this out there. If you are just looking to become even more orgasmic than you already are, this might help you, but if you've never this is not the place to look for help.

5 out of 5 stars A very excellent item to own..........2003-12-30

This book should be read by every woman and every straight man. A very helpful guide that says systematically what you wish had been explained (in such an enjoyable way) from the beginning. It covers the very simple to the more advanced, is a very easy and enjoyable read, has lots of pictures and diagrams, and also features quotes from people giving insight from personal experience. Although female sexuality can be a difficult thing to lasso and understand, this book simplifies it and makes it very...enjoyable. As I said, a very excellent item to own.

4 out of 5 stars Corny but Wholesome.......2003-10-18

The jokes may be a bit corny and hackneyed, but are great for children and are a refreshing change from the often mean-spirited, expletive-laden trash that passes for humor nowadays. If you want some good clean fun and something your kids can enjoy, you'll like this book.
