A beautiful, soulful read........2000-04-14

When I read this book in 1997, I enjoyed it. Later, as I began to digest the information and reflect on it, a whole new world began to open up for me. The result was a complete therepeutic transformation of my life and relationships. Now, three years later, I still refer to this book on a regular basis. It has captured my imagination, and I continue to read the materials referred to in Tom's sources.

Tom's book gets to the heart of whatever it is within us that blocks or prevents us from making real, substantive and sustainable progress toward our goals. It goes deeper than the countless lifeless self-help books that leave you feeling empty or that start with good ideas but end up only cheerleading the disempowered. It cuts through the lies we tell ourselves, and the excuses or defenses we often give others, and empowers us to face the real truth by causing us to ask, "What is my true motivation--and what do I have to be afraid of by making that truth known?"

Probably the most helpful thing about this book is that it helps us handle life's ironies, paradoxes, and contradictions more creatively as we explore hidden beliefs and assumptions that often lock up our creativity and quietly sabotage our relationships and personal effectiveness.

For example, for many years my wife and I were stifled by either/or thinking. We either agreed or we didn't, and each of us was either right or wrong--which seems to make all the sense in the world, right? We both wanted the best for our marriage, but despite our best intentions things only seemed to get worse with us. It seemed that if we didn't agree 100 percent, we would ultimately have to see this play out in the real world, and someone would be disappointed and possibly resentful as a natural consequence. Also, we wondered why we couldn't simply "grow up" and allow differences of opinion to exist--and why we could never both be right, but for different reasons. The result was that whoever "won" an argument by strength of logic or manipulation (pouting or complaining) had the luxury of getting his or her way. Not until much later did we realize how damaging this had been to our relationship. After all, the person that didn't get his or her way seemed to resent it for months, feeling victimized or cheated, while the other person would soon forget about the whole thing and ask months later, "What's your problem?"--creating a whole new and ugly debate about something that seemed to be "resolved."

Tom's technique of "holding the tension"--one of the many powerful ideas in this book--offers a new perspective. Neither person is "right" or "wrong," "smart" or "stupid." Instead, the ideas of both sides are valued, even if they are apparently contradictory. It requires both people to listen more carefully--not only to what the other person is saying, but also to what hidden assumptions and beliefs lie buried in your own soul that might be uncovered as you listen. It requires each side to admit that their own motivations are not always squeeky clean, either, before judging the other person. Often, these silent motivators are hidden even to ourselves, and only through our reactions and responses to others can we glimpse them in action.

Consequently, by using some of these ideas, my wife and I have slowly improved our ability to communicate--to remain in difficult dialog without storming off, to express our strong opinions without being called out, to see an accusation or complaint as a call of the soul rather than a call to arms, and to find alternatives that demand neither compromises or battles. It has given us tools that have allowed us to increase measurably in personal effectiveness and consciousness, as well as in our maturity and relationship with each other.

I found the book to be very useful in helping me understand why I do things that are destructive to myself and to others. The author gives very logical and persuasive arguments along with research by other noted experts of human psychology and spirituality. It's a definite read if you are on a journey of spiritual enlightenment and personal and professional growth.

THE book for people STILL striving to be effective.......1998-03-16

Many of us have focused a good portion of our lives working on our principles and habits in search of balance and harmony. In program after program we are taught simply to replace unproductive and ineffective habits and thoughts with better, more empowering ones. Most of us realize at some point that something is seriously missing in this approach. In this book, Tom Riskas helps us understand why. He shows us how to work at a much deeper level, "beneath the surface," to integrate ALL of the forces at work in our lives. He tells us how to get in touch with our soul's hidden agenda -- the one that is naturally striving for wholeness, whether we realize it or not. For the first time, someone helps us integrate the productive and effective sides of our personality ALONG WITH the darker sides that we've been trying to ingnore and suppress. As a former teacher of "principles of effectiveness" he knows as well as anyone that in order to truly have the breakthroughs that help us get control of our lives on a sustained basis, we must be willing to suffer -- to do hard work at a core level to understand and work with our hidden agenda. The rewards are huge. His book is excellent. Very insightful and full of personal experience and practical advice. But for it to be of value, you have to be willing to do some intense personal work. This is not the book for the person looking for the next popular "effectivess" program.

I loved this approach to helping people find their inter deamons, I cried at the 5th chapter and found that I could'nt get enough of this book. I read clear through it in 2 days. I feel this will help many, many people find their uncovered abilities and be able to far reach all their goals by carefuly reading this book again & again. Thanks Tom

The blurb on the back jacket said this author was nominated for several writing awards. My questions is "HOW?!?!?!" This book has nothing going for it, other than the cover art. The characterizations are horrible, the "plot" is worse. I'm sorry to say I wasted my time and money buying and reading this. It's an insult to the world of Babylon 5, and I wish there was a way JMS could remove his name from it.

In the cosmic scheme of things, this is Babylon 5's "Way to Eden" .... a piece of drivel so profound it should never have even touched paper. The *ONLY* reason to have a copy of this trash is to complete your babylon 5 collection. and even then, put it as far to the back of the shelf as you can.

The longest chapter in the "book" is about 3 pages. The publisher - by formatting the book slightly differant - could have shortened this to approximately 80 pages, just by having all the chapters edited together, so that instead of having a chapter that is about 10 lines long (and I'm serious here) then almost a full blank page, and going to a new chapter on the next page.

The writing is - at best - sophomoric. What was the point of the james bond theme, other than to stretch out what would have made a passable short story into a borefest?

I'm still trying to figure out how someone with the writing style shown here could have possibly won an award for anything ... yet according to the back cover he has won a number of them. Perhaps he was suffering from something during the writing process ... or was pushed for a deadline and only had an hour to write it?

One more thing. What was the point of Lyndisty?

Why did I bother reading more than one or two chapers of this book? Same reason I used to sit through Gilligan's Island episodes years ago. But wait --- I'm being far too hard on Gilligan. "Personal Agendas" on the other hand has no redeeming value. Not only is it written in a style aimed at fourth-graders, its subplots are designed so that the status quo is preserved and nothing is changed. This is the exact opposite of what Bablyon 5 is about --- characters growing and developing like real people. Skip this one.

This isn't a book, it is merchandising, and merchandising of such poor quality that it is an insult to the consumer. I feel insulted that I am expected to buy this simply because it has the magic words "Babylon 5" on the cover, and I feel a complete fool because that is exactly what I did. The worst bit is that we are actually expected to regard this is being part of the B5 "canon" - as "really" having happened in the timeline of the show. Sorry, no way. Ivanova in a wig all through season 4? Don't be ridiculous. Quality-wise, this is on a par with really bad fan fiction - except that I can't imagine even the dimmest fan writer getting the characterisations so wrong. In fact, go look on the Web and you'll find stacks of amateur spin-off fiction which is light years better than this. Oh, and by the way, I only gave it one star because the software wouldn't let me give it none at all.

I am a B5 fan, that, there is no doubt. But if you read some of the others reviews you would think there are no redeeming values to the book. The characters are a little "out of character" but I like to read the books to see what happened between the scenes of the TV show to see how the characters are away from the main story arch. The book was enjoyable, it was easy reading, and I could imagine in my mind's storyboard everyone doing and saying what the book told me. Remember read it for enjoyment sake not to get some revelation on the personalities of the characters. Fun, ok!

Wholly Unoriginal Work by A False Prophet.......2007-07-11

In the old testament when a prophet made a prediction that didn't come true they were exposed as a false prophet, taken out and stoned to death. I'm certainly not recommending it- just putting some perspective on our extreme tolerance for people that are consistently WRONG in their predictions. Only God knows what's going to happen, and it's GOD not government, or even we ourselves that provides for us. Burkett and a whole host of "Christian financial advisors" put WAAAAYYYYY too much stock in "planning and preparation". I don't discount it, but they do it and recommend it to the point of pride and idolitary. Do what YOU are supposed to do, and let God do the rest. Quit WORRYING (as worry is a sin) and trying to predict the future and get on with your life!!!

A Future Warning.......2006-09-19

Those some of his predictions (such as 2000) about an economic earthquake hasn't happened yet nor are we that close even with the largest deficit in history. Although it's hard to predict such things...But Larry Burkett makes valid warnings about huge goverment and public deficits and it's impact on the economic that normally leads to hyper-inflation. My impression from the data contained in the book and history thereafter, the government deficit will not have a negative impact such as hyper-inflation till most of the baby boomers are retired. I wish Larry would have updated this topic! The book is still worth buying as it has valuable information, it's super cheap...

The revised edition of The Coming Economic Earthquake has some interesting information. For a somewhat different view you should check out "The Christian Financial Crisis" by James L. Paris.

While Mr. Burkett's timing for the economic collapse is off the principals remain solid. Our economy will collapse and his book fortells how and why, while still offering hope. Much thought to chew on.

On The Right Track But Weak.......2007-09-19

Bob larson has been in the business of exposing Satanic deceptions for years. I don't doubt his sincerity and with my own years of personal experience with the supernatural, and investigation of volumes of UFO literature, he's right on track with his conclusions of demonic alien origins. But I found his explanations of what is really going on to be weak. And his insistance that we being the center of God's creation leaves no room for other inhabited worlds I totally disagree with. I believe the Bible leave's plenty of room for other inhabited worlds; unfallen worlds not tainted with sin, ours being the only fallen planet. For example:

"Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom he made the worlds." Hebrews 1:2 KJV.

"Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time." Revelation 12:12 KJV.

Notice in both quoted texts the plurality of the words "worlds" and "heavens". Revelation 12 even admonishes the other "heavens" or worlds to "rejoice", for there are multitudes of galaxies in God's vast universe, but pronounces woe upon the earth's inhabitants because of the devil's wrath and deception, Satan knowing his remaining time is almost finished on this planet. And these other unfallen worlds are definitely not the culprits visiting us, with frightening abductions and experimentations of hybridization and painfully terrifying physical exams. Just the hideous appearance of such beings should be a clue to their true demonic personages. Mr. Larson could have gone so much deeper in unmasking the evil one's trickeries, but unfortunately, the reader is so often left hanging in midair.

I think Bob's book is getting unfairly trashed by all the self-proclaimed "UFO buffs". Do any UFO experts have proof that the alleged aliens aren't satanic demons? NO. So how can they say that Bob is wrong? How does anyone really know...

Poorly Written, Xenophobic Christian Agenda.......2001-04-24

Larson's thesis is that UFO and related supernatural phenomena is Satanic. Anyone involved in any so-called New Age philosophies, metaphysics, the paranormal or supernatural is not a true Christian and is, in fact, being manipulated by demonic forces.

Fine. That's his perogative, and he has his beliefs. My problem is with his methodology, or, lack of it. This book is nothing more than a frothing at the mouth, anti-everything (except the most fundamental Christianity) and is insulting.

Larson lumps New Agers, agnostics, scientists, metaphysics, other religions -- many which have been around longer than Christianity -- into the same category: evil.

To say that Larson's sneering dismissal of religions is an insult is an understatement. He comes dangerously close to making anti-Semitic remarks when he refers to "occult" Jewish religion. His rejection of the sciences, other religions, and the great thinkers like Carl Jung, Carl Sagan, Freud, etc. are a little scary for its dark ages tone.

Larson chides others for not being open minded, yet he consisently calls others who he disagrees with as "nuts" or "wackos." Again, that is his opinion, to which he is entitled, but it isn't good discourse. Which, obviously, Larson is incapable of engaging in.

To conclude, this book is trash. It is only useful to the investigator who is interested in exploring the views of a fundamental Christian in relation to UFOs. The book is full of inaccuracies and is poorly written. It is also offensive in its anti-intellectual views and general xenophobia.

A different kind of UFO book.......2000-09-22

After browsing through this book again I've found it somewhat more interesting and useful then I initially thought it to be. Yes the book is religiously biased, but so what. The author makes plenty of valid arguments and his views on "aliens" are a welcome change from all the other hardcore UFO books. Bob delves deep into exploring the occult-- deeper and more elaborate than in any other UFO book i've read; he brings to attention lots of the really strange groups out there, which unfortunately most books never mention because they're too outlandish.
