5 out of 5 stars Quarterlife Finance says, "A Classic that Every Investor Should Read".......2007-10-03

I recently finished reading the 9th edition of Burton Malkiel's classic text A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing, Ninth Edition. First published in 1973, this book is a classic text that deserves a place on any investor's bookshelf.

Malkiel presents two possible security valuation models - one based on a firm foundation of value and one based on finding a "greater fool" to sell your speculative buys to. He analyzes the history of investment bubbles from the Dutch tulip mania some two hundred years ago all the way through the tech stock bubble of the late 1990s. He discusses fundamental analysis of stocks and thoroughly trashes technical analysis. Finally, Malkiel presents a strategy that virtually guarantees that your investments will keep pace with the market with minimal investment of time.

I enjoyed and recommend this book for several reasons. First and foremost, it blows the whistle on many common "beat the market" strategies, including all manner of technical analysis. As a relatively young investor, I was always intimidated by the chartist strategies (moving averages, buy points, etc) but after reading Malkiel there is no cause for fear. Those strategies simply do not work.

Moreover, I found the book to be an easy read relative to many texts on investment. While he covers different types of stock analysis, modern portfolio theory, the efficient market hypothesis, and asset allocation in detail, the book is not weighted down with too much heavy terminology. His writing style, use of historical anecdotes, and ability to challenge your beliefs again and again keeps you riveted to the book.

Finally, I believe that the strategies presented in the book are clear, concise, and can be employed by anyone to their immense gain. Too many people pay for poor investment advice, make mistakes by chasing gains and paying for active portfolio management, or even pay absurd 12b-1 fees on underperforming mutual fund investments. By reading this book and taking Malkiel's advice to heart, I believe that just about anyone can end up with more dollars in hand.

On the other hand, the book does delve into financial topics that may be intimidating for someone completely new to the investment world. The basic message (buy and hold a well-diversified portfolio of extremely low-cost index funds) could be expressed much more succinctly. However, I wouldn't change a thing with this book...just be prepared for a wild ride that challenges everything you thought you knew about investing.

1 out of 5 stars not a fan........2007-10-03

This book was not what it was trumped up to be, as far as I am concerned. It's a gloomy, negative, pessimistic, unending drivel of known and common sense information and data presented in a much more complicated manner that they are in real life. After reading this book you may be inclined to start taking anti-depressants and definitely stay away from the stock and other securities markets. Weeooogh!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Message. Sweeps some exceptions (particularly those noted herein) under the rug........2007-10-02

Particularly in a day and age where mutual funds are often touting themselves on the television, this book has an excellent, largely unbiased message for the average investor: buy low cost index funds and stay in them for the long haul.

The book is exceptionally well written, covering most of the lessons of an introductory to intermediate finance course in a very accessible format (i.e. all the right *ideas* without the confusing math). He utilizes dozens of powerful examples and good data to show that his basic premise, despite now being 30 years old, is sound. Due to its theoretical strength and accessible style, this book could be of particular value to Undergrad Business and MBA students who find the professor's academic approach to an Introductory Finance course confusing. Get the big picture here, making the math just that much easier to follow. (5 stars for making difficult financial concepts readable and interesting)

Despite my strong recommendation for both his message and style, the book does have some drawbacks. Number one is that he has clearly taken a side on the issue and has thrown impartiality to the wind. Regularly, the author depends on "transaction costs" (the cost to trade) to ensure that a trading strategy cannot beat his preferred portfolio (implying that it would have succeeded without the transaction costs). This "sweeps under the rug" several clear counter-examples to the basic efficient market thesis in order to reinforce his index-investment message. While I understand his reasoning for doing so -- a desire not to encourage investment in high cost funds or heaven forbid day trading -- it does lead to some skepticism about his willingness to admit any possibility that his thesis has weaknesses. To that end, I would discourage readers who are familiar with CAPM and efficient-markets from reading the book (2 stars as a brush up).

In the end, however, I think the message is sound. Rather than cite trading costs, I think the message can effectively be said another way: If you spent 5h a day investigating stocks, what are the odds that you can beat a professional manager? If a manager has a staff of 20 that invest 8h per day investigating stocks, what are the odds that they're going to beat the whole financial services industry? If the whole industry is taking advantage of every opportunity to profit from small deviations, and you're going to pay a manager most if not all of that profit anyway, investing in an index basically gets you the benefit of thousands of mutual funds and investment bankers without the cost of any of them (or of your time to do research).

With qualifications to the highly technical reader, who should pass on the book, I can't, in good conscience, fail to give this book 5 stars for a profoundly valuable message targeted at the individual investor.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide ever.......2007-10-02

A good informative writing on the handling of your finances in regards to investing. I found it to be quite basic but I have been investing since a club in the 1960's. It still gave me a lot of information and ideas that I knew a little or nothing on. I would recommend it highly to any and all that wish to have anything in the future for their retirement.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best.......2007-09-10

I first read this book in its seventh edition. I was great then. I recently purchased the ninth edition as a "refresher." It's still a great book and the one I recommend to prospective clients or other investors prone to believe all of the active management garbage out there. Burton Malkiel does a masterful job of dismantling all of the Wall Street hype and laying out investing in a simple, straight-forward, and long-term approach.

If you read this book and still believe in the Wall Street gurus then you're hopeless. And, you deserve every bit of the bad advice you're following.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Lowdown on GOING DOWN.......2007-10-11

Excellent read, once you get to the techniques. I also liked some of the psyche info. Helps a man understand the woman mind a little better, so we don't get so confused, lol. Anyway, the techniques take a little practice, and the tongue exercises are crucial. Your woman will worship you once you've got "things" perfected!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Advice!.......2007-08-18

I also highly recommend - The Master's Guide to Cunnilingus: How to Perform Successful Oral Sex and Provide the Highest Degree of Pleasure Possible

After reading both books I can proudly say that I've become a better lover!

4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2007-08-02

The book covers similar ground as 'She Comes First', which I also recommend. Michaels writes her book informally and conversationally.

The author's background as speech pathologist gives her a great deal of credibility - particularly when discussing the tongue. That's the strongest point. It's also a quick read. The weak point is that the book is good enough that it does not need the occasional sarcastic quips to support it. Sometimes it seemed that the authors were embarassed by the subject matter and felt the need to lighten it up. Understandable, but sometimes it smacked of too much effort. Drop some sarcasm and the book could be even better than it is. Even as is, it's still 4 stars. Let's see if it merits 5 big Os.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-06-27

I felt pretty good about my knowledge of this area but I did learn some things I either didn't know or had forgotten we can all use a refresher. Worth the time and the cost would recommended to anyone wanting to increase the pleasure for both paties.

3 out of 5 stars ok for linguists.......2007-05-13

I found this book verging on the ridiculus in as much as the excercises that one is expected to do with the lips, tongue and jaw are similar to an oral marathon.

Book Description

This Is Not the Life I Ordered is for anyone who has ever felt overworked, overwhelmed, or just plain unlucky (and, who hasn't?!). Through this collection of stories, wisdom, and practical advice, readers will meet four ordinary women who have faced extraordinary life challenges. Together, they have a history of six marriages, ten children, four stepchildren, six dogs, two miscarriages, two cats, a failed adoption, and foster parenthood. Two have lived through the death of their spouses and one was shot and left for dead on a tarmac in Guyana -- which is documented in "Jonestown" airing on PBS' American Experience

This book started simply with four friends getting together for "kitchen-table coaching sessions" to talk about their lives. Week by week and story by story, they realized their great advice to each other could help other women struggling with life's myriad issues of work, family, and love, as well as the big questions of life and death. For over a decade, the power and strength of their collective friendship enabled these women not only to survive but to thrive. They invite readers to join them to learn how they, too, can turn "misfortunate" events into joy-filled opportunities. Readers will want to share this book with every woman in their lives!

* Authors are best-selling business-book author, Deborah Collins Stephens; Emmy winner Jan Yanehiro; State Senator Jackie Speier; and entrepreneur Michealene Cristini Risley whose Flashcards was screened at last year's Cannes Film Festival.

* Authors' support circle includes Debbi Fields, Kristi Yamaguchi, Danielle Steele, Gerry Laybourne, and other power women.

* Features practical "Wit (Women in Transition) Kit" tips at the end of each chapter to help readers to be their own life coaches.

Thanks ladies for sharing your life stories and the stories of so many different and unique women. You are all an inspiration! God Bless

5 out of 5 stars It's Not About Being Average.......2007-08-10

Let's face it - we all come to a point where we think, "This is not what I wanted out of life." This book is for anyone who is at that point or has experienced a personal tragedy that has continued to haunt them. Anyone could read this and instantly identify the vast gap between the average American woman and the authors whose personal stories are shared within its pages, but the point of the book is not to point out who has it worse when dealing with bad situations (a new widow in suburbia or a cmpany executive losing a 6-figure income). The point is actually to give you an idea of just how bad things can be and how you can rise above anything. The basic information provided in the "action steps" apply to just about any situation. There are fantastic motivational quotes throughout and excellent ideas for how to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get going again, no matter what your circumstances. Even if you are feeling negative and pessimistic, this book can help you find positivity and optimism from those people and places that already surround you. I have recommended this book to several friends who have already read and enjoyed it just as much as I did. I returned mine to the library and promptly bought my own copy (as well as a few extras for gifts)!

1 out of 5 stars Did I read the same book as the rest of you?.......2007-07-30

I stumbled across this book while doing research for a book I am writing. I actually wanted to use the same title for a collection of humorous essays, and then felt compelled to read this one. I am only halfway through it and am exhausted from slogging through the overabundance of headings and subheadings in each chapter, the overuse of quotations, and the endless posturing and patronizing from unrelatable situations that so few women will ever face - shot in South America while disbanding a cult, crying over the loss of a $200,000 job, escaping the Khmer Rouge. How is an average American woman supposed to connect with these stories? I am sure every woman mentioned in this book is courageous, intelligent and generous. But the disjointed writing and sloppy editing make it a chore to find their true essence and a message to carry with me. I had such high hopes for this book. I am glad now that I merely borrowed it from the library rather than purchased it. I do enjoy the cartoons, though.

5 out of 5 stars If You're a Woman, You Need This Book!.......2007-07-18

I just finished reading "This is Not the Life I Ordered," by Deborah Collins Stephens, Jackie Speier, Michealene Cristini Risley and Jan Yanehiro and all I can say is get this book!

This book touches every human aspect possible and carves out a whole new way of looking at life. It shows the power of connecting with women on all levels. These four authors weave in their life stories as well as countless other women's life stories into a book that will become your inspiration to get through the hard times, define your life, enrich the lives of others and live your life to the fullest.

It's the kind of book that you will buy for your friends so you can connect with them on a newer, deeper level.

It's the kind of book that you will read over and over again to receive a renewed strength, sense of self and desire to do more, be more and have more.

Lia Lee was born in 1981 to a family of recent Hmong immigrants, and soon developed symptoms of epilepsy. By 1988 she was living at home but was brain dead after a tragic cycle of misunderstanding, overmedication, and culture clash: "What the doctors viewed as clinical efficiency the Hmong viewed as frosty arrogance." The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, written with the deepest of human feeling. Sherwin Nuland said of the account, "There are no villains in Fadiman's tale, just as there are no heroes. People are presented as she saw them, in their humility and their frailty--and their nobility."

Book Description

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction

When three-month-old Lia Lee Arrived at the county hospital emergency room in Merced, California, a chain of events was set in motion from which neither she nor her parents nor her doctors would ever recover. Lia's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community in Merced, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos. The Hmong, traditionally a close-knit and fiercely people, have been less amenable to assimilation than most immigrants, adhering steadfastly to the rituals and beliefs of their ancestors. Lia's pediatricians, Neil Ernst and his wife, Peggy Philip, cleaved just as strongly to another tradition: that of Western medicine. When Lia Lee Entered the American medical system, diagnosed as an epileptic, her story became a tragic case history of cultural miscommunication.

Parents and doctors both wanted the best for Lia, but their ideas about the causes of her illness and its treatment could hardly have been more different. The Hmong see illness aand healing as spiritual matters linked to virtually everything in the universe, while medical community marks a division between body and soul, and concerns itself almost exclusively with the former. Lia's doctors ascribed her seizures to the misfiring of her cerebral neurons; her parents called her illness, qaug dab peg--the spirit catches you and you fall down--and ascribed it to the wandering of her soul. The doctors prescribed anticonvulsants; her parents preferred animal sacrifices.

5 out of 5 stars A Paradigm of the Complexities of Modern Medicine in Relation to Cuture and Ethnicity.......2007-09-30

I read "The Spirit Catches You, and You Fall Down" as a required reading for a Sociology course on Health and Ilnness in Society. This is simply put, an amazing piece of work, that not only is thorough, but has a great deal of emotion and you really are able to sense the pain, frustration, and joy, of both the Lee family and the medical community that cared for her. This work is also a testiment to the Hmong people and culture, who are often grealty overlooked in US Asian American culture. Anne Fadiman goes into great detail describing their culture, from it's language, history, and religion both here and in Loas, and to their unfortunate and tragic involvement in the US war in Vietnam which landed them in refugee camps in Thailand. My opinions vacillated at times from anger to empathy for her parents and their inability and refusal to follow the doctors advise, that could've saved their daughters life. I encourage this book to be read by anyone going into the medical field where you will encounter a myriad of ethnicities, that often fly in the face of conventional US medicine. This is nonfiction that reads with the excitement and personality of a well crafted novel.

5 out of 5 stars The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down .......2007-09-26

exceptional book for those involved in anything dealing with human relationships. gives unbiased information from all sides of the issue (language & cultural barriers resulting in medical "errors")
this book smacks you in the face with your own preconceptions about what families know about their child, and what professionals know about their field, and how sometimes those two don't mesh, resulting in the child being put in the middle.
oh yeah, and every once in a while you will want to yell out about "the guy hiding behind the rock." because hindsight is so clear!

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to cross cultural communication.......2007-09-04

I was assigned this book as a supplement to a Cross Cultural Communication class. It's a very interesting read about a young girl who gets caught between Eastern and Western medicine. It makes a good read to see how CCC can be so important in our daily lives. It has a good lot of medical jargon and even more characters. There are a lot of doctors that are important for various reasons. It is certainly not a light beach read. Once you read it though you'll want someone else to read it to have someone to talk about. You can get in long discussions over who is "right" and if there is a right.

3 out of 5 stars Oh so predictable..........2007-08-07

Detailed, researched look at the Hmong people of Vietnam in America through the experiences of one family in the medical/hospital system as they try to help their epileptic child. Although the action takes place in California, the story would probably have been similar no matter where the family lived. Non judgemental author keeps reader engaged. Structure of the book with alternating chapters detailing the history of the Hmong and then the specific family works well. Cross cultural misunderstandings seem inevitable given language and cultural differences. Sad without being depressing.

An excellent book. A powerful and moving true story of a cultural east/west clash, especially concerning medical care. I couldn't put the book down. Enlightening also when it comes to the drugs used in treating status epilecticus, specifically in children under three. I also appreciated learning about some of the political history regarding the beautiful people of Laos. My heart goes out to the Hmong people.

5 out of 5 stars Just getting started.......2007-09-30

Since I've just been getting started riding my bike again, I needed a quick review on keeping my bike in working order. The stuff in this book was laid out nicely and easily accessible even for an old fart like me... It came in really handy this summer as I kept getting flats.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2007-09-18

Pretty lame if you are planning to actually work on your bike opposed to reading about or thinking about doing it. Covers a lot of things in poor detail, so little detail that you could not do it with this book alone. Example: want to install some disk brakes? No way with this book. It also includes info on how to work on really old bikes and outdated equipment. I bet you are dying to know how to work on centerpull road bike brakes which were last made in like 1981! Your're in luck b/c that is covered pretty well. Save your $$ and buy another book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-09-12

Very useful, complete, lots of pics and understandable for anyone. If you need some help for your bike maintenance that's the book you need.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-08-14

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to service their own bike. There are many great pictures and it covers a wide variety of bikes.

4 out of 5 stars Too early to tell, but it looks good........2007-08-09

I just received this book recently in the mail from the US, and have not had any need to use it. Without actually testing it out, I can only say that it looks good and has a lot of useful pictures. The price was reasonable, so I can't see why anyone would not want to add it to their repairbook collection.

1 out of 5 stars Ideological leanings way too obvious; not a good characteristic for an educational text.......2006-05-13

I was assigned this textbook for my high school Sociology class that I took as an elective in the last semester of my Senior year. I had gone into the class expecting an intriguing, thought-provoking subject that led students to ask the big questions about why people and society are the way they are, and that the textbook would help guide me along the way. Unfortunately, I was pretty dissapointed, to say the least.

Let me add a disclaimer saying that I am a firm Independent; I'm a college-bound kid who dislikes political and ideological squabbles and believes both the Right and the Left have equal merit in their own ways. That being said, the reason for my rating is that, as my title suggests, the author's opinions and biases shine through quite blatantly, much of it appealing sharply to the Left wing of the ideological spectrum. While most textbooks simply give you facts, with maybe some interpretations to help you form your own conclusion, Henslin has the negative tendency to editorialize, using word choice and selected statistics (not to mention his own "personal observations") to paint certain aspects of society in a good or bad light as he sees fit. This is a very inappropriate, and I might go so far as to call it dangerous, thing to do when writing educational material to be taught to youngsters.

As an example, take a look at his chapter on economic theories, in which capitalism and socialism are both given analysis. The problem is, when socialism is mentioned, Henslin spends a significant majority of the time in which it's mentioned explaining the goals and the lofty ideals of it, and little time mentioning its inherent drawbacks (which all ideologies have).

The whole rest of the chapter, however, is dedicated to capitalism; more specifically, how capitalism basically is so totally exploitive, greedy, and concentrates power in the hands of the tiny few, with the phrases "exploitation," "greed", "believe greed is good," and "elite" dropped here and there. Add further excerpts implying that American democracy is little more than a puppet show controled by rich business interests who sway the government, and it's not hard to see how someone impressionable would learn to unflinchingly hate the whole theory in general. This is NOT what a textbook is supposed to do.

Henslin then spends much of the time talking about class, race, gender, etc...as was to be expected. The problem here is that, again, he editorializes, rallying around whatever the oppressed group of the time may be and almost relentlessly guiltmongering against whites, men, and people in classes that can live comfortably.

The chapter about gender is a particular treasure trove for this sort of thing; near the beginning, Henslin writes a particular gem referring to gender in the workplace, which goes something along the lines of "Imagine that two women are talking when they are supposed to be working. When the male boss walks by, he would most likely tell them to get back to work. But what if it were two men talking? For instance, if they were talking about sports, would he be more likely to join in on their conversation instead of telling them to get back to work? This is just one of the inequalities that women face in the workplace." (not a verbatim quote, but that's the basic gist of it).

And it just gets better from there, some of it based off of true injustices that happened in the past and do still happen today, but a lot of it off of generalizations and editorials that I, as a young male, found quite offensive. When my class finished with that chapter, I felt as if Henslin was doing everything short of saying that I was going to roast in Hades for having an XY chromosome. Extremely one-sided, with the guilt and blame poured on heavily.

I could go on about how the book gives readers guilt trips about how people in our own supposedly-prosperous nation and around the world are living in poverty while we comfortable-living ingrates sit on our butts taking part in an exploitive culture driven by self-interest, but I've already gone on long enough.

Suffice to say this much; this book's biases are dead obvious to anyone who is truly objective-minded enough to notice it. It's kind of a shame, because I truly believe that Henslin had good intentions when he wrote this, and I do believe that, like many liberal-minded people, he has a genuine concern about the injustices of the world and a desire to see it change for the better. But that doesn't excuse the fact that opinionated language, finger-pointing, guiltmongering, and editorializing play a major role in getting this textbook's points across.

A schoolbook is supposed to present cold hard facts to students with an absolute minimum of bias, so as to respect them enough to form their own beliefs and interpretations; not indoctrine them with the exlusive ideas of a narrow ideological philosophy. I'm almost disheartened that this book has gotten so many rave reviews singing its praises about it's objectivity and enlightening messages. Then again, as much as I hate to perpetuate stereotypes, this is mostly read by college students, and, on the political spectrum college kids are often...well, you get the idea.

I wouldn't really recommend this textbook to any educator who wishes to maintain a proper balance of opinion in the classroom. If you do end up reading it, though, be prepared to take your grain of salt to class with you.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and informative.......2005-09-03

I have to admit, I hate the soft sciences, but I had to take Sociology 101 for a requirement. Thank goodness this was the textbook assigned to the course! Everything is perfectly clear and it's actually really fun to read. Even if you're not taking a course, I'd recommend this book to anyone who would like to call themselves knowledgable. It is a fun read, and you'll come out so much more informed in the end - painlessly!

5 out of 5 stars great.......2003-08-28

Excellent service. Book was shipped same day and I received it 2 days later.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Lively.......2000-01-12

Admittedly I haven't read a lot of sociology textbooks, but this one is quite good. Every chapter has real-life examples (and many of the author's own experiences), so it not only makes you know the theory but also feel it at work in our societies, although the author writes quite a lot of his own feelings (it's dead obvious that he wants to change the world), which I don't know if it's a good point or not.

Certain data-communication protocols hog the spotlight, but all of them have a lot in common. Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet explains the engineering problems that are inherent in communicating digital information from point to point. The top-down approach mentioned in the subtitle means that the book starts at the top of the protocol stack--at the application layer--and works its way down through the other layers, until it reaches bare wire.

The authors, for the most part, shun the well-known seven-layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocol stack in favor of their own five-layer (application, transport, network, link, and physical) model. It's an effective approach that helps clear away some of the hand waving traditionally associated with the more obtuse layers in the OSI model. The approach is definitely theoretical--don't look here for instructions on configuring Windows 2000 or a Cisco router--but it's relevant to reality, and should help anyone who needs to understand networking as a programmer, system architect, or even administration guru.

The treatment of the network layer, at which routing takes place, is typical of the overall style. In discussing routing, authors James Kurose and Keith Ross explain (by way of lots of clear, definition-packed text) what routing protocols need to do: find the best route to a destination. Then they present the mathematics that determine the best path, show some code that implements those algorithms, and illustrate the logic by using excellent conceptual diagrams. Real-life implementations of the algorithms--including Internet Protocol (both IPv4 and IPv6) and several popular IP routing protocols--help you to make the transition from pure theory to networking technologies. --David Wall

Topics covered: The theory behind data networks, with thorough discussion of the problems that are posed at each level (the application layer gets plenty of attention). For each layer, there's academic coverage of networking problems and solutions, followed by discussion of real technologies. Special sections deal with network security and transmission of digital multimedia.

Book Description

Computer Networking provides a top-down approach to this study by beginning with applications-level protocols and then working down the protocol stack. Focuses on a specific motivating example of a network-the Internet-as well as introducing students to protocols in a more theoretical context. New short "interlude" on "putting it all together" that follows the coverage of application, transport, network, and datalink layers ties together the various components of the Internet architecture and identifying aspects of the architecture that have made the Internet so successful. A new chapter covers wireless and mobile networking, including in-depth coverage of Wi-Fi, Mobile IP and GSM. Also included is expanded coverage on BGP, wireless security and DNS. This book is designed for readers who need to learn the fundamentals of computer networking. It also has extensive material, on the very latest technology, making it of great interest to networking professionals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on computer networks.......2007-05-23

Certainly the best INTRODUCTORY book on computer networks. And ONE of the two best books on computer networks (the other being Computer Networks by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, however the two are written in a very different style.)

Brilliant work! The book describes computer networks in an very very interesting manner, with practical real world scenarios and examples, explaining how things works in real world with examples of internet, together with very interesting notes on great events in the computer networks field. The fundamental networking concepts are described and explained in a great way. The figures are outstanding helping in understanding the thoery even more. As the title suggests the chapters discuss network stack layers top to down, i.e., the first chapter dicusses the Application layer, and so on.

However regarding the contents, I think Andrew S. Tanenbaum's book covers more which is also due to the fact that this book is written with Internet as an example, therefore it mostly covers the major topics in the computer networks.

The topics are explained in very much detail. However for this reason, this book may not be ideal for someone who wants a quick revision of the network concepts.

In a way, a negative point of the book is that sometimes it is overloaded with too much unnecessary information.

Very highly recommended! Dont think, go for it, especially it if it is your first book on computer networks.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for starting out in networking.......2007-04-28

This is a great book if you are starting out in the computer networking field. It is also a good compliment to "Computer Networks" by Andrew Tanenbaum. This is not a book for someone well versed with the basic concepts as it lacks the depth and details.

This book looks at the networking concepts from the software engineer/ computer science perspective rather than computer engineer/ electrical engineer one.

It explains many of the concepts with very simple everyday analogies and the simple language makes it very readable. The book does miss out on many emerging technologies, like sensor networks, mesh networks, etc.

Also the lower OSI layers like physical, MAC lack the details and information worthy of a basic book. The application, transport and network layers are covered well since this a primarily a software engineer's look at networking.

Overall, its a good book for beginers(specially for computer science) but not for intermediate or experts in the field .

5 out of 5 stars Fast Service.......2007-02-11

I bought this book for my son in college...if anything...thank you for the great service and fast shipment..it made it prior to the start of his class..

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-02-06

I like the book very much. It is very up-to-date on emerging technologies and very explanatory. However, I was expecting to see solutions to exercises. A great book indeed.

4 out of 5 stars nice that they use 5 layers instead of 7.......2007-01-25

[A review of the 3rd Edition.]

Kudos to the authors for eschewing the traditional 7 layer description of the Internet. Too complex. Instead, they give a clear and pragmatic understanding of 5 layers. Physical, data link, network, transport and application. A very logical subdivision. From this flows the User Datagram Protocol and TCP/IP.

At the network layer, there is a good airing of common routing algorithms, used by Cisco and others. Including broadcast and multicast routing. These are very efficient methods of using the available bandwidth; especially for applications like video being viewed by many people.

Wireless and mobile networks also get a mention. Important since in the developing world, more people are likely to have a cellphone than a computer. There are different issues here, compared to fixed landline networks. Like mobility management.

The only possible drawback about the text is the brief discussion on IPv6, the next generation Internet. If you need a comprehensive discussion, seek a different book.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerous Words, Beware!.......2007-05-25

Chapter 8, titled: Is This Normal? States, "it is not unusual for a boy to watch another boy masturbate or to masturbate with a group of boys. Nor is it unusual for two boys to masturbate each other." My 13 year old son was accused of sexual assault by an 11 year old boy (a friend) after the 11 year old suggested they masturbated together, they did so on three occasions. The charge came a year later, social services and the police visited our home. Our younger son was almost removed from our home. Our 14 year old was questioned by police, charged, fingerprinted and we had to hire a lawyer. This book states that boys masturbating together or each other is not unusual. Maybe so, but it is a crime, and your child could be charged with sexual assault. Especially when the other child, out of guilt, fear, or revenge perhaps, tells his parents that he wasn't a willing participate once he realizes his "young, boyish curiosity" was a crime. BEWARE!

4 out of 5 stars Very Insightful.......2007-05-15

I bought this book for my 12 year old son and he finds it to be very interesting. It has opened up discussions on things he would normally not discuss with me which has helped us have great conversations. I recommned this book for anybody with young boys going through puberty whom are normally not used to talking about what's going on with them.

5 out of 5 stars For boys who want to know the facts, this book has the answers!.......2007-04-10

What's going on down there? A general question, perhaps, but one that boys between the ages of ten and fourteen ask regularly about the changes their bodies undergo during puberty. In Karen Gravelle's book, What's Going on Down There: Answers to Questions Boys Find Hard to Ask, she describes the physical and emotional changes that occur in boys (and, to a lesser extent, in girls) during puberty. In addition, Gravelle discusses sexual activity, homosexuality, AIDS, and other related topics. Gravelle had help with the book; 11- and 13-year-old brothers, Nick and Chava Castro, served as advisors, asking questions and working with Gravelle to make the book's language easy to read and to understand.

I bought this book for my older son when he was ten years old. I liked the funny and informative cartoons, and my cursory reading before giving it to him left me believing it might help him navigate the storms of puberty.

I had not read the book cover-to-cover, but I did so recently in connection with an assignment for my master's degree in library science. I am glad I did. Reading the book carefully served to confirm that I made a wise purchase five years ago, something I suspected when I noticed that my older son had handed down the book to his younger brother a few years ago.

Although the book has a few weird and wonderful moments (like stating that many women don't find childbirth to be particularly painful!), I found it to be an excellent source of practical, no-nonsense information. Some parents might be uncomfortable with the book's approach. The author includes frank discussions of orgasms, masturbation, and abortion, and the illustrator has a drawing of an orchidometer so boys can measure their testicles to see how far along they are in the puberty process. For parents who want their sons to know the facts about their bodies, though, and for boys who need to know those facts, this book is the one book on the subject I would recommend first.

5 out of 5 stars so very informative.......2007-03-06

This book is packed full of useful information, easy to read, and helpful drawings. A must-read for any boy going through puberty.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information!.......2007-02-08

I mailed a copy of this book to my 10 year old step son, because he was asking his father questions about the process of becoming a man. I read the book thoroughly. I believe the book is excellent. There are a few points in the book that will make a parent uncomfortable, but it is information a young boy needs to know, and deals with situations he has likely seen on television or in movies. My step son's mother did not let him read the book because she felt he did not need to be exposed to the small section on homosexuality and masturbation. I ordered a copy for him to read at our house, and he told his father he was glad to have the opportunity to read the book. He stated that the book addressed questions he would never have asked his mother, and that the book also helped him determine where his friends had given him misleading or incorrect information about what to expect during puberty. Overall, this is an excellent book, and I hope that parents won't let their fears override an otherwise excellent method of providing a young man with the information he desparately needs to know.

"We have been trying to feed our hurting, longing hearts with physical food," writes Gwen Shamblin, registered dietician and founder of the Weigh Down program, which emphasizes "God's power--not 'will power.'" This book offers instruction on how to eat only when physically hungry, how to "nourish the soul with a relationship with God," and how not to confuse different hunger urges. The diet plan teaches you not to overeat by letting you eat exactly what you want, but much less of it.

The key is to understand hunger, recognize fullness, and sense what your body is really calling for. You learn to "rate" food by its appeal, and eat your favorite foods first, stopping when you're getting full (not waiting until you're stuffed). This is not a nutritional guide; in fact, Shamblin's own sample menu is high in fat, cholesterol, sugar, and salt. The Weigh Down Diet is, however, a guide to using your religious beliefs to help you stop overeating and see food in a new light. This book inspires you with scriptural passages, discussions of "God's rules" about eating, and assurances that God's love will help you win your battle with weight.

Book Description

You can now join the thousands who have discovered a liberating new weight control plan and are turning to God to take away the desire to overeat. The Weigh Down Workshop, a remarkable program which already has thousands of support groups across the country and has gained national attention in media from "A Current Affair" to Woman's Day, is now available as a book. What makes this ground-breaking approach to weight loss so unique is that participants can eat any kind of food-including fats and sweets--and be able to stop in the middle of a candy bar when their stomachs are full.

People who have known no end to fullness and who have no control over their late-night binges have learned through the Weigh Down Method that God can remove the seemingly irresistible pull of the pantry and drive-thru restaurants. With this approach, participants can reduce the volume of food they want to one-third of what it used to be and yet still eat with fulfilled satisfaction. Yet this is not a diet like others you've seen. Dieting only increases chewing whereas with the Weigh Down approach, you will chew less food, but more importantly, with God's help-want less food. Quite simply, this approach equals weight loss. Weigh Down gives back hope; hope to dieters who will learn that they are not a failure. Stop torturing yourself. God did not put chocolate or lasagna on earth to torture us--but rather for our enjoyment! Hallelujah!

5 out of 5 stars This book totally changed my life 9 years ago.......2007-09-13

I bought this book in 1998 at my highest weight after having my second baby. I had been yo yo dieting for several years and this book put an end to it. Since buying this book 9 years ago, I have lost 60 pounds and have kept it off. I never have to "diet" again. I eat food I love in moderation, just as God designed us to do all along.

My only disclaimer is that I never got around to sensing that craving for "healthy" foods. Gwen says our bodies will naturally develop a craving for things like fruits and veggies if we listen. I guess I'm deaf to my body in that regard, because I believe my health declined as I ate only the foods I loved the most and VERY little fruits and veggies. I have since learned to consciously add those foods to my diet, purposely choosing organic whole foods as much as possible, yet I certainly don't obstain from any one food I love. All things in moderation with a conscious effort to include fruits and veggies. I highly recommend The Great Physician's Rx for Health & Wellness in addition to The Weigh Down Diet. I would Read Weigh Down first and once the principals are established, consider reading the other book. The Great Physician's Rx is a complete opposite phlosophy than Weigh Down when it comes to the foods we choose, yet I have combined principals from both books for a healthier leaner life with the freedom to enjoy the foods I love.

I highly recommend The Weigh Down Diet. It completely changed my life and brought real freedom and a joy to eating. It's wonderful to be thin!

5 out of 5 stars TRULY Life Changing!.......2007-07-26

Excellent! Would recommend this book and/or program to anyone who is addicted to dieting, over-eating, is bulimic, anorexic or anyone that struggles with food issues or issues in general!!

As a self-proclaimed self-help junkie, I bought this book thinking that "I probably already know everything its going to say, but I'll give it a try anyway." For once, I'm thrilled to say that it is like nothing I have ever tried or heard of before. It defies every principle I have ever learned from the "professionals" and the countless books and programs I have ever tried.

It is teaching me to not only make peace with food, but to also to have peace within. Both things have been completely elusive to me for my entire adult life and probably most of my childhood. In fact, I was pretty sure that neither was possible.

I never expected to lose weight with this book, but thought that if there was a slight chance that it could "teach" me a few tricks to get off that awful binge/diet roller coaster, then it would be worth it. Well, it not only totally changed my way of eating and thinking...I've also lost almost 15 lbs in a little over two months. But the most amazing thing was that I lost it eating REAL FOOD!!! Not diet food, but the same stuff the REST of the world eats!!

If you think you have tried everything and that there is no help for you, please don't give up until you try this. I'm so glad I did! Thank God and thank you Gwen Shamblin!!

5 out of 5 stars The Weigh Down Diet.......2007-07-22

This is a Christian/diet based book. It explains that when we overeat we are being sinful to the temple of God which is our body. Just as a smoker, drinker, drug abuser is to their body. Being overweight is destroying our health. When 1/3 of the population is obese and 1/2 is overweight we know it's a serious problem. Gwen shows you how you can go to God in your weight loss journey. She explains that when we fully submit to God and focus on Him and allow Him to be our first love rather than food then everything else will come in line. God gave us a body that tells us when we are hungry and when we are full. In this book you'll be taken through Egypt and into the dessert and finally the promise land. It's not just another diet book. It's a way of life and God is included and He will get you through. This is the best book I've read because a lot of diet books out there want you to be vegetarian, or to go low carb, low calorie, low fat, eat clean and the list goes on. Weigh Down is a book where you don't have to prepare special meals for you and then another for your family. It's very simple. I've been applying the principles to my life and I've already lost 6lbs in three weeks.

5 out of 5 stars What you've been looking for!.......2007-06-10

If you're looking to purchase this book, it's probably because you've already heard of the Weigh Down diet, or maybe you're looking for a way to lose weight. This book and the program it teaches are what I've been looking for my whole life. The program is real, it's easy to follow, and it works. And even better, it teaches the reader how to develop their relationship with God.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Read!!.......2007-06-08

So many times we see the short lived "successes" and the many failures of those who struggle with their weight. I personally have seen its effects in my family. My father has struggled all of his life and has yo-yoed from 200 to 400+ lbs many times. He's had not one but TWO gastric surgeries and flatlined three times after the last one. Needless to say, my heart has ached to know what people can do to really beat obesity for life.

I've only been 15 or so pounds overweight throughout my lifetime but seeing the women in my family, I knew I could possibly be as overweight and miserable as they are/were. In came this book! What a blessing! Because I am a Christian, I really connected with the writings and realized that I needed to change my eating habits not just to stay thin but as a service to God. It really taught me how to offer my heart to Him fully and to allow God to work in me like never before. It's not only changed how I look at food but how I look at everything I do that is displeasing to God and how to reposition myself so that I truly want to please Him in every area of my life. This is about a whole lifestlye change. I found this book because I saw Gwen on the Tyra Banks show. The thing that stood out the most was that everyone who spoke had a tangible presence of joy on their lives. They knew God!! This book is simply outstanding!! If you read it and reread it and put it into practice--recognizing true hunger and fullness vs head hunger and really offer yourself up to God, you can't help but have success, not just in your wieght, but in your life!! Be blessed.
