"I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there's gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day."

So begin the trials and tribulations of the irascible Alexander, who has been earning the sympathy of readers since 1972. People of all ages have terrible, horrible days, and Alexander offers us the cranky commiseration we crave as well as a reminder that things may not be all that bad. As Alexander's day progresses, he faces a barrage of bummers worthy of a country- western song: getting smushed in the middle seat of the car, a dessertless lunch sack, a cavity at the dentist's office, stripeless sneakers, witnessing kissing on television, and being forced to sleep in railroad-train pajamas. He resolves several times to move to Australia.

Judith Viorst flawlessly and humorously captures a child's testy temperament, rendering Alexander sympathetic rather than whiny. Our hero's gum-styled hair and peevish countenance are artfully depicted by Ray Cruz's illustrations. An ALA Notable Book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a great antidote to bad days everywhere, sure to put a smile on even the crabbiest of faces. (Ages 5 to 9)

Book Description

Alexander knew it was going to be a terrible day when he woke up with gum in this hair.

And it got worse...

His best friend deserted him. There was no dessert in his lunch bag. And, on top of all that, there were lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV!

This handsome new edition of Judith Viorst's classic picture book is sure to charm readers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Great books.......2007-10-11

My sons, my husband, and I all loved this book. We still use the tag line (30 years later) as a way to say "my day was the pits, so don't even ask." Judith Viorst writes books based on her own family and life experiences for both children and adults. Alexander is, indeed, having an awful day. One thing after another just isn't working out for him, and he keeps saying that he thinks he'll go to Australia. Every kid has had at least one day like this (and so have the rest of us). In the end, his mother tries to console him with the truth we all have to learn - that "Some days are like that. Even in Australia."

5 out of 5 stars a must have.......2007-10-03

Great books for boys or girls. And for a bed time even better, when parents (who had a bad day themselves) have to read it. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Attitude.......2007-09-24

Great little book that I use to tutor children to read - and at the same time teach about attitudes. They love it!

5 out of 5 stars HAVEN'T WE ALL BEEN THERE.......2007-09-17

Young, old or somewhere in the middle - we've all experienced a day like this. Heck, some of us have found a week or a month of having a "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!" I find this to be charmingly written, easy to read for a child, a quick bedtime story and a great lesson of life. It's OK to be upset, to have a bad day - tomorrow - you start all over. Helps to explore feelings that are natural and needed in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Still a favorite as an adult.......2007-09-15

i remember my teacher reading this book aloud to my class. I adored it then, and still do. sometimes I consider moving to Australia! I can't say enough about this wonderful book.

Once again, renowned health pioneer and bestselling author Ann Louise Gittleman has a quick, no-strings-attached solution that is also good for you. The plan itself is blissfully simple:

THE PREQUEL: Seven days of adding detox support foods to your diet to prepare your body for the one-day Fast

THE FAST: One day of sipping Gittleman’s “Miracle Juice,” a deliciously spiced mixture of herbs and spices specially designed to stave off hunger, balance blood sugar, boost metabolism, and replenish nutrients (no kidding, the juice is completely delicious)

THE SEQUEL: Three days of reintroducing supportive and immune-boosting foods into your diet to seal in the results

That’s all. There’s no need for a strict maintenance plan or more dieting because the Fast Track One-Day Detox Diet purges your body of fattening toxins so that you’ll keep losing weight once you’re finished. What’s more, if you can’t add those healthy foods to your diet in the Prequel and Sequel, Gittleman provides a list of replacement supplements that you can easily find in your local health food store or online.

So, use The Fast Track One-Day Detox Diet to jump start an over-40 metabolism, melt away vacation or holiday pounds, break a diet plateau, get in shape for that high school reunion or wedding, and even help heal a chronic illness. Even if you’ve been slow to lose weight in the past, the pounds will melt away quickly during your one-day fast. Inside there are recipes to prepare for the fast, shopping lists, and tips for sailing through the fast.

In addition, Ann Louise Gittleman shares the wisdom she’s gained from years of research on health, diet, and nutrition. You’ll find out about hidden toxins found in the environment and in everyday foods, and learn easy steps you can take to live healthier every day.

The perfect diet: simplicity, effortless weight loss, and obvious health benefits from a nutritionist with a proven tack record. You’ll feel so good after your first fast, you’ll want to incorporate the Fast Track’s cleansing principles and periodic fasting into your life for good.

4 out of 5 stars Good idea, but overpromissing.......2007-09-24

There is one thing that I absolutely agree with Ann Luise - the amount of chemicals that we are exposed to in our daily lives is overwhelming. I think that cleansing our bodies from them ("unchemicalizing ourselves") from time to time is a very good idea.

There are several other authors that pointed to this problem in the past. There are also a few who suggested better or worse cleansing solutions. One author dealing extensively with this topic in her few books is Hulda Clark. Gittleman's Detox Diet is only a good addition to the anthology. I do, however, have a problem with the "eight pounds weight loss in a day" idea. Isn't this just a little over-promising?

My favorite author dealing with this topic is Mikhail Tombak who offers total body cleansing solutions (starting with the liver, via kidney, intestines, bones and joints, and ending with blood) in one of the chapters of his book "Can We Live 150 Year?" At the same time Mr. Tombak does not promise losing weight overnight...

5 out of 5 stars More about detox , than weight loss.......2007-07-13

I'm a big of Ann Gittleman. I have all her Fat Flush books. I think that the information they provide is invaluable. I learned a lot from reading her books. I've had success with this book and the Fat Flush Plan. To be honest, I did not lose the weight that I expected to lose from this detox diet. As one reviewer points out, it takes a lot of other factors to help you lose weight. However, the detoxification that I got was worth more than the extra pounds of weight loss. My actual weight loss came from Fat Flush. But, Fast Track helped to make my liver and colon much healthier. On this detox diet, sometimes it was hard for me to find a food within each of her categories that I liked, but I did my best. I liked the Miracle Juice, and it was easy to prepare. I really didn't think it was that bad. The detox day didn't affect me in any adverse way. I ate the next day, but I wasn't ravenous. To anyone who is thinking about purchasing this book, just know in advance that this book will help you in many ways, but it is a very tough 11 days. Just make sure that you're up to it before you begin. Also know that because it says that you COULD lose up to 8 pounds doesn't mean that you will. All I can tell you is that I enjoyed this book, and I will use it again to detox. Five stars for detoxification!

2 out of 5 stars Not really "One-day" as it claims.......2007-04-25

Having lived in Germany I was already familiar with the idea of quick fasts and fasting groups to cleanse the body and periodically offset weight gain. I haven't tried this one because it seemed pretty complicated and requiring lots of effort, planning and the purchase of special stuff like supplements. I was also pretty put off when I read that there was a highly structured 7-day "prequel" to the detox. One-day huh?

3 out of 5 stars Suprise eating health makes you feel better..........2007-03-29

Long term weight\fitness changes require long term effort.

That being said nothing like a jumpstart, new book, fad diet to get you going.

Outlines a great program that works for detoxifying your body and for weight loss that still leaves you full of energy

Inspired by Debra Frasier's enormously popular On the Day You Were Born, this charming photo journal invites families to celebrate the arrival of their loved one into the natural world. A star-spangled blue sky, crossed by a swath of sunshine yellow with gold birds, introduces the reader to "the very first day you arrived." Baby's picture and name go right in the middle of all the cheery yellow. Turn the page: "You were born on the round planet Earth. Was it day, or was it night?" is printed with another space for a picture and a line to write the date and time of birth against the backdrop of more starry sky with that old blue and green globe plopped in the middle and a figure of a child frolicking across the ocean. On another page, the jubilant child dances across a beach: "On the day you were born waves washed the beaches clean for your footprints. How little were your fingers? How tiny were your toes?"

By adding eight photographs and filling in a few details, parents can create a very special journal for their child, rejoicing together in all the natural wonders of the universe. Here is an ideal gift for the new parents with a vibrant connection to nature. --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

In simple words and radiant collages, Debra Frasier celebrates the natural miracles of the earth and extends an exuberant welcome to each member of our human family. Accompanied by a detailed glossary explaining such natural phenomena as gravity, tides, and migration, this is an unforgettable book. “A book filled with reverence for the natural order of the world and the place of the individual in it.”--School Library Journal

5 out of 5 stars Lovely!.......2007-09-05

I got this book because it was on sale and I am so glad that I did. Seeing it now I would definitely pay full price for it.

It is well-made, adorable, and will make a great keepsake to share with our son.

5 out of 5 stars Magical! .......2007-09-03

This is a book I've given as a birthday gift many times - to new arrivals and those celebrating more birthdays as well. The text is simple yet beautiful and the illustrations provide a warm, magical layer of feeling when reading this book. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful gift for first time parents!.......2007-08-31

I received this book from a good friend when my baby boy was born (our first). I thought the poetry of birth and the natural world was amazing. And the ending where a circle of loved ones welcomed the new baby whispering "We're so glad you've come," reminded me of all the love our family and friends showed our new baby. I can't read it without tearing up. It's a wonderful reminder that all life is sacred and beautiful.
While the art is tribal, not fluffy, and some of the language is advanced for a developing child, I still love this book. Not every board book should be pastels and one syllable words. But I hope this book will be a keepsake that we can read together and remember what a miracle it was that he was born. I want to foster in him the spirit of this book... that all life is connected and we need to try to live in balance with the environment that sustains our lives.

5 out of 5 stars On The Day You Were Born.......2007-07-27

This is a wonderful book to give to any new child or to the grandparent of a new child. I was given one for our new grandson and immediately bought three to give as gifts. The book is something that can become a family tradition to be read on each child's birthday!

5 out of 5 stars Book is AMAZING, CD is so-so.......2007-05-15

I bought this for my son before he was born, and I read it to him all the time - and never with a dry eye! I always buy it as a baby gift for anyone I know who's having a baby of their own. However, unless you find this set for a good price, I might just get the book. My husband calls the CD "hippie music" and he's right - the music is a little, um, groovy and repetitive. Though if you have a sappy friend, get it - books like this and the Giving Tree always make me cry, and if I can have the CD finish the story for me when I get choked up, so much the better.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A nice book, if you make it to the cheerful part.......2007-09-29

My 2-year really enjoys this book ... now. A couple of the first times that we read it, she seemed bummed out by the little misfortunes that occur to the characters. She actually looked sad and shut the book. But once she became used to the idea that there were happier times ahead, she became enthusiastic about reading it. Perhaps a little less drama from the reader (mom) during the first few readings would have prevented the stalls.

5 out of 5 stars Read it again!.......2007-08-28

"Read it again!" was my three year old daughter's response to this book, which we read to her for the first time tonight. She absolutely loves it, and so do we. It's perfect--beautiful pictures, charming text and exactly the right length for a three year old.

5 out of 5 stars Very Sweet.......2007-07-27

I got this book for my 2-1/2 year old daughter, and we all really love it! It's very short but manages to effectively fit in a very sweet (but not preachy) message that there is always a bright side when we are feeling down! The illustrations are very pretty but also simple. The way the pages are arranged is very nice and simple and creates a good rhythm when reading the book. In fact, it could also make a really great 'learn-to-read' book. My daughter loves it, and she loves to help 'read' it with us when my husband and I read it to her.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-17

I was very disappointed with the book because of the brevity of the story. It's as though you begin to read the story and then its over!
The illustrations are very nice but I bought this for my great niece who is blind and so she cannot enjoy the pictures.
Again, I was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for age 2.......2007-06-27

Lots of pictures, few words, and little person's issues give this book strong appeal to be the one picked by the child to be read.

"Here is the book that Romeo would have given Juliet; Charlie Brown would have given Snoopy; and you can give to some very special friend" proclaims the back cover of this small, whimsical book. Written in 1965 by Sandol Stoddard Warburg, it still makes the perfect present for your best friend. Not just any run-of-the-mill best friend, though. This book is for the kind of friend who yells for you when you get lost in Grand Central Station or pretends to save you when you pretend to be drowning. Or, as Warburg puts it, "You know how to be silly / That's why I like you / Boy are you ever silly / I never met anybody sillier than me / till I met you." I Like You is simple and quirky, uses words like "snurkle," and is laden with delightful Maurice Sendak-style pen-and-ink illustrations of alligators dancing, lively children, mirth, and general goofiness. Do you need new answers to the question "How do I like thee?" I Like You is a great help for counting the ways.(All Ages)

5 out of 5 stars Says it all.......2007-05-15

I gave this to my husband on our wedding day as part of my gift to him. He was blown away by how simple it was, but how perfectly it said everything I wanted to tell him.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect romantic gift.......2007-05-03

I was looking for a Valentine's Day gift for my girlfriend, and stumbled across this little gem. It's really not for kids at all, though they can have fun with it and get the superficial message. Adults realize that it's really talking about why we love each other. It does it in a whimsical way, completely devoid of Hallmark treacle and cloying mush, and makes you realize all the small yet critical ways that the other person meshes with you.

I am marrying my now-fiancee next week; in the ten years I've known her, this is her favorite gift. She keeps it on the nightstand and occasionally we'll quote from it or even leaf through it together.

5 out of 5 stars Touching.......2007-03-13

This book was touching and entertaining. The sentiment is timeless, even though there are a few phrases/words that I am sure meant something else in 1965 when the book was written. I would recommend this book for a loved one or good friend. Even though the title is "I Like You" the feeling is I Love You. The illustrations are cute and the overall feeling is whimsical.

5 out of 5 stars So cute, Great gift.......2007-03-08

This is a sweet little anytime gift or would be perfect for an anniversary/Valentine gift. It's sweet yet silly. Any girl would love it and it's not too sappy to give to a guy either.

5 out of 5 stars lasted 40+ years.......2007-02-09

My then boyfriend - now my husband of 39 years - gave me this book. My daughters, now grown with their own families, have given it their beloveds. The sweetest, gentlest, most caring book ever written. Its sentiments have held steadfast all these years.

A great introduction to geometry and the different shapes. Shows the relationships of different shapes to everyday items.

5 out of 5 stars Eductational and fun to read.......2006-11-10

A really cute tale of Triangle getting bored being a traiangle. He then gets bored being quadralateral, pentagon, etc. As he morphs into the different shapes the reader learns the names of new shape. Very cute!

5 out of 5 stars Sensational Shapes Story with Marvelous Message.......2006-09-12

This book is a delight on many fronts. It is a great, fun story about shapes which provides an entertaining way to expand a child's knowledge of informal geometry. Not only are children introduced to the proper names of polygons, but also this book helps them to see shapes as they exist in their surroundings. Also this fun book has a great message - it's good to be you!

4 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book it is!!!!!!.......2007-10-04

My boy is 6 and he's so interested of castles and knights.
and this pop up book is so amazing book for kids.
My kid had a shouting whenever i read the next page
i recommand this book for boy agess 6 to 12.

5 out of 5 stars Another intricate and exciting adventure.......2007-10-03

My son received this book for his 4th birthday and has been enjoying it at different levels over the past year. At first, he loved looking for the knights, admiring the intricate pop-ups, and listening to parts of the text about knights and their castles.

Now that he is 5, he is enjoying the book at a different level, spending longer moments discovering the surprises each page has to offer, and listening to the text with a greater attention to detail.

Of course, many of our grown-up guests enjoy looking at all of our Sabuda and Reinhart books as well. They are great fun and a true wonder!

4 out of 5 stars Castle: Medieval Days and Knights.......2007-08-16

I am simply amazed that you can buy a high quality Sabuda pop-up book for such a reasonable price. These books are too nice for children who simply cannot appreciate the work that must have gone into creating them. Each one is a piece of art -- I just love them. I am convinced that eventually they will be too expensive to produce.

5 out of 5 stars Buy 2, Use 1.......2007-07-14

Fascinating Pop-up book will spark the imagination of children and adults alike. Fun facts provide a glimpse into Medieval lives and are never dry. Kyle Olman came to our school and gave our 5th graders a demonstration on creating their own pop up knight, and happens to be an extremely kind and patient teacher as well as an incredible new author/artist!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pop-up book!.......2007-07-11

Although this is clearly a book for older children and my son is only 16 months old, he already LOVES this book! (although secretly, I think my husband possibly enjoys it even more!) We've had it for 2 months now, and he still oohs and aahs as each page is turned (the boy, not the man!). His favorite is the interactive page in the middle where pulling on the arrowed tabs bring "life" to all of the medieval workers doing their jobs. We keep the book on a high shelf out of his reach, to keep him from damaging it accidentally. He eagerly requests to see it several times a week. It's interesting to me how he's never treated the Sabuda & Reinhart pop-up books (we have 3 - "Sharks" and "Dinosaurs" are just as amazing, although very different, from this one) in the same rough manner as he does with his other "toddler" books. Somehow, he knew these books are not the same. Even at his young age, he knows he has to let Mommy or Daddy help him with the delicate pages, and he gets SO excited with all of the amazing "action"! Excellent! Wonderful gift for any child.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

5 out of 5 stars Jack & Annie in China.......2006-04-25

When Jack and Annie found out that they were going to China, they went straight to the treehouse. They met Morgan there, and she told them that they had to save a library in China. The dragon king was going to burn all the books, because he didn't like them. Jack and Annie saw a huge map of the castle where the emporer lived and they used it to help them find the library. In the end, Jack and Annie saved the library and were heroes again.

I liked this book because of the Terra Cotta soldiers (we have one of these at home !), the Chinese hats that Jack and Annie wore, and the dragon kings clothes. And I think I'm a good judge of Chinese things, since I was born in China !

5 out of 5 stars the burning of the books.......2006-02-02

I hate the way the Dragen King wanted to burn all the books in China. But I am glad that Jack and Annie saved one. They escaped eveything.

5 out of 5 stars The Trip to China.......2005-04-13

This story take place on China in the 1970, the boy and the girl were ready to go to China and they go in to get the bamboo book that is on the city, and they find two Chinese people. They take them to the city and they see people selling fish, the boy told them if they can take them to the library to find the bamboo book that has all the secrets of China.
This book is mostly about two kids that go to China to look for the bamboo book that is in the city of China. They went to the library with the secret library card and finally they found the bamboo book.

In my opinion, I think its a very good book because, the trip to China and the Great Wall and the Dragon King's tomb.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite of mine.......2007-10-10

When I was little, this was one of my favorite books. I recently purchased this for my cousin's little boy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Fun & Knowledge.......2007-09-25

This book is a plethora of adventure, fun, and knowledge for both young & old. I've been reading this book with my grandson. He loves it and has learned a lot. Actually I am learning some new things too!
I'll say it again that I don't know how in the world I missed his books when my boys were growing up!! I must have been on another planet or something! Glad I got back in time for my grand children!

5 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book.......2007-09-25

I personally believe a better title would be "How things work". There is great detail in Richard Scarry's illustrations showing how things work such as: a Sawmill, Paper Mill, Flour Mill, all with gears and pully's. There is wonderful detail in the process of building a house; framing, plumbing, electrical, etc. The "Voyage on a ship" gives an inside look of all the goings on, including the crew's quarters, and the engine, with pistons, propeller, and rudder. If you have a young child who is fascinated by how mechanical things work, this is an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars Check the Edition Carefully.......2007-09-21

The New Ed is also abridged, even though it doesn't say so in the title. The abridged versions have 64 pages--the original version has 95 pages. If you are looking for the original version, check the page count before you order.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching book.......2007-07-04

This was a favorite book of mine when I was a child and I was glad to see it still in publication. I purchased it for my four year old who loves books. I think it is great because it not only shows a variety of occupations but also shows a great deal about how things work. It shows wiring and plumbing for a house, how they process grain into flour which becomes bread, etc. My child is still trying to grasp where food comes from (since we don't live on a farm) and where water comes from (out of the tap) and where it goes (down the drain). I also reccommend his Busy Town book which is in a large format also.

Product Description

Today I feel silly. Mom says it's the heat. I put rouge on the cat and gloves on my feet. I ate noodles for breakfast and pancakes at night. I dressed like a star and was quite a sight. Today I am sad, my mood's heavy and gray. There's a frown on my face and it's been there all day. My best friend and I had a really big fight. She said that I tattled and I know that she's right.Silly, cranky, excited, or sad--everyone has moods that can change each day. Jamie Lee Curtis's zany and touching verse, paired with Laura Cornell's whimsical and original illustrations, helps kids explore, identify, and, even have fun with their ever-changing moods. Here's another inspired picture book from the bestselling author-illustrator team of Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born and When I Was Little: A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth.

Amazon.com

Jamie Lee Curtis has starred in many movies, but she says that the children's books she has written mean more to her than any of her films. She and artist Laura Cornell have previously collaborated on two bestselling books: Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born and When I Was Little: A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth. This time, we follow a little girl with curly red hair through 13 different moods, beginning with silly: "Today I feel silly. / Mom says it's the heat. I put rouge on the cat / and gloves on my feet." Of course, silly soon turns to grumpy and mean... to excited... to confused, and so on. Recognizing one's own mood swings is a developmental milestone, one that some adults haven't yet mastered! Cornell's watercolor illustrations--wildly expressive and energetic--effectively capture the volatility of our redheaded star. Whether she is happy or mad or dancing a solo in jazz, she is always "full of pizzazz," and this book is, too. A clever mood wheel on the last page allows young readers to change the little girl's expression--both her eyes and mouth. This is silly fun with a smart lesson for children from ages 4 to 8. --Marcie Bovetz

This is a great book to read to your children. I teach 9th graders and read it to them and they love it. It is a really great choice!

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by Jamie Lee Curtis.......2007-09-06

I really like all of the books I have read by Ms. Curtis. The message and the rhymes are great. The illustrations are also very cute. My daughter liked the emotions wheel at the back, and it has been helpful in talking with her about different feelings.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-07-31

This is a great book, my daughter is only 2 and it is a little long for her. Instead of reading it word for word we look at the pictures and talk about that feeling. The end of the book a wheel with different eyes and mouths we think is fun too!!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Offering from Curtis!.......2007-04-10

The great colorful impressionistic illustrations by Cornell and the catchy sing-along prose of Curtis make this book a delight to children. Each page has a mood and a poem. On the confused page, you have to turn the book sideise to read it, and all of the moods are artistically conveyed. there's even a cool page at the end that let's you change the girl's mood. Young girls will especially enjoy this short read.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.......2006-11-10

I bought this book for my 3 year old daughter. She loves the book and wanted it read to her every night for bedtime. Now she "reads" it to me word for word. It is a great book to help explain to a young child the subtle differences between 2 moods and the dramatic differences between other moods. At the end of the book there is a wheel that allows the user to change the eyes and mouth to match each feeling in the book. If you buy the book you will not be disappointed!
