In this third installment in the popular Fish! series, the authors examine change as a necessary, ongoing process that should never stop--at least not if one wants to keep the workplace vital and fully alive. Using a fictitious sushi restaurant as an example, this fable examines the three principles that Lundin, Christensen, and Paul believe are necessary for continuing success: Find It ("it" being each employee's personal vision of the business), Live It, and Coach It. Readers of the authors' previous books--Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results and Fish! Tales--should find its familiarity comforting. For those new to the series, this standalone volume is easy to read and highly valuable. --David Bombeck

The "o-FISH!-al" follow-up to the phenomenal bestselling Fish! and Fish! Tales, Fish! Sticks is a stand alone business parable that shows you how to come up with a vision for your business and how to keep it alive, vital, and renewed through tough times, such as turnover in management and staff or a troubled economy.
Using the example of a hugely successful, fictional sushi restaurant as a model for a vision of continual renewal, Fish! Sticks employs the same kind of easy-to-read story that was used in Fish! to illustrate its three major principals of continued success: Commit, Be it, and Coach it.
When Stephanie, a new manager, takes over from a wildly popular and now promoted boss, she is faced with the problem of how to keep spirits up in a corporate unit that has, frankly, started to get bored and cranky and revert to its old ways. But then she visits the amazing Taka Sushi (formerly Taka Teriyaki), with its lines of customers cheerfully waiting for hours to get in. Soon, she realizes that the way to keep her employees motivated and her customers delighted can be learned from a bunch of waiters who teach one another everything they need to know. And when she finds out just how the owner of Taka knew to switch her main bill of fare from teriyaki to sushi long before anyone else, what she really discovers is the secret of keeping your work fresh.

IT means: Find Purpose, Live Identity, Coach Accountability.......2007-08-19
An easy read and good use of the fable to emphasis an often overlooked part of performance management; the importance of each individual finding a piece of their Me Inc. vision within the Business Inc. vision. Although authors Lundin, Christensen, and Paul never use the term Me Inc. in this fable about sustaining a performance transformation within the 6th-floor neurological care ward of Good Samaritan Hospital (Business Inc. in the fable), referring to the connection as IT; they clearly convey the message that sustainable performance is only possible when individuals find their IT within the wards vision of customer care.
Recognizing that sustainable motivation/energy can only be created when individuals connect their purpose, identity, and accountability with their business's performance vision, the authors show how the employee's must Find IT thru individual conversations, Live IT by putting their unique identity into action, and hold each other accountable thru a Coach IT process unencumbered by hierarchy. While fables can only go so far in conveying the complexity of organizational effectiveness, this fable brings a critical piece of the puzzle to the front. It is recommended for use with teams as the next step after the initial visioning and performance goal setting processes of performance management. Dennis DeWilde, author of "The Performance Connection"
Decent but not as good as the original.......2007-08-01
After reading about this book I was excited by the opportunity to get some more insight into the "Fish!" world, and I was especially interested in learning about `how to make change stick'. I liked how the book was another "fable" type story, and thought that this might make another good Book Club selection for our company book club.
Well, I read the book, and although I thought it had some merit, it was not nearly as easily accessible and distillable to the same audiences as the first "Fish!" book was. I was still glad I bought the book, and I did get something out of it, but I had real trouble imagining trying to pass this message on to others in our company.
I will say this, though. One message that came out of this book and that hit me loud and clear was that for "change" to stick, the meaning of the change has to be personalized to each individual, and it has to mean something to them, because once all the bells and whistles of the program are gone, and the initial excitement dies down, it will be impossible to keep a culture change program going unless others can relate to it personally and continue to buy into it on a day to day basis.
So, I thought THAT message was valuable and worth buying the book for, but I don't think I will be passing this out at our next book club. It was just not a book that was otherwise easily understandable to a much wider audience.
However, if you haven't read the original "Fish!" book yet, I HIGHLY recommend it...

This book is one in the FISH series. It is a quick read. If you like the story telling approach to learning, you will like this book. Not one of my favorites.
A good followup to Fish!.......2006-11-10
This is an excellant, easy to read follow up to Fish! It continues the process, to keep the good things going. I strongly recommend this book.

The Condition of Postmodernity is David Harvey's seminal history of our most equivocal of eras. What does postmodernism mean? Where did it come from? Harvey, a professor of geography and a key mover behind extending the scope and influence of the discipline of geography itself, does a thorough job here delineating the passage through to postmodernity and the economic, social, and political changes that underscored and accompanied it. As he clearly states, the rise in postmodernist cultural forms is related to a new intensity in what Harvey terms "time-space compression," but this new intensity is a qualitative rather than quantitative change in social organization, and it does not point to an era beyond capitalism as "the basic rules of capitalistic accumulation" remain unchanged. Unlike Fredric Jameson (whose equally rewarding Postmodernism stands as the twin pillar to Harvey's critique), who explicitly relies on Ernest Mandel's periodization of late capitalism, Harvey eschews a narrowly economic focus, the limits and contradictions of production that have led to the rise in the service sector, and takes a more multidisciplinary approach to his history. As comfortable discussing Manet as he is labor markets, Harvey is an excellent writer, and The Condition of Postmodernity is an exceptionally informative and enjoyable read. --Mark Thwaite, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
A great deal has been written on what has variously been described as the post-modern condition and on post-modern culture, architecture, art and society. In this new book, David Harvey seeks to determine what is meant by the term in its different contexts and to identify how accurate and useful it is as a description of contemporary experience. But the book is much more than this: in the course of his investigation the author provides a social and semantic history - from the Enlightenment to the present - of modernism and its expression in political and social ideas and movements, as well as in art, literature and architecture. He considers in particular how the meaning and perception of time and space themselves vary over time and space, and shows that this variance affects individual values and social processes of the most fundamental kind. This book will be widely welcomed, not only for its clear and critical account of the arguments surrounding the propositions of modernity and post-modernity, but as an incisive contribution to the history of ideas and their relation to social and political change.
Customer Reviews:
Good lord.......2005-09-16
Wow, this book is about as dense as the crust of the earth. It takes at least a few reads over to understand what the arguments are. While the arguments in this book are very well articulated, I found myself wanting to shoot myself in the face sometimes while reading this book. It can be really boring, but brings up some very interesting ideas of 80's culture and society.
Po-Mo Schmomo?.......2003-03-04
Ask ten academics about what to call our present fin-de-siecle epoch and you'll get ten different labels, but "postmodernism" seems always the default term. Although it's twelve years old, Harvey's book is the best I've read about the pluralistic fabric we daily inhabit. It's edifyingly reader-friendly (especially compared to some of the Franco-drunk rhetoricians out there trying to get a handle on our current world). In precise prose Harvey outlines the shift to our information-as-capital paradigm since the mid-sixties, and the causes of the growth of the temp sector and "just-in-time" production capabilities. Harvey traces the arrival of "flexible accumulation" to the collapse of Fordist production practices in the 1966-73 waves of recession, but covers far more than just economic factors--architecture, art, literature, cinema--without any self-conscious Neo-Marxist whistling-in-the-dark. In his project to articulate a new (meta?)narrative, Harvey's book will probably give post-structuralists a new constellation of ideas to obfuscate with hip terminology and dense prose...
Manuel Castell's "The Rise of the Network Society" is another good book along these lines.
Best overview of modern/postmodern condition I have found.......2002-08-22
This is a great overview of concepts that are, by definition, very fractured. Harvey clarifies and pulls together a number of seemingly disparate elements in a masterful manner. Though this book could work as a good introduction to these concepts, I think readers with some background in the major writers of modernism and postmodernism will get more out of it. Dogmatic postmodernists may be put off that Harvey has the "temerity" to suggest that postmodernism might be an extension of modernism or that he finds some good in modernism and some excesses in postmodern approaches but, they should get over themselves and realize that their insistence that "all meta-narratives are bad" is their own meta-narrative. Overall, Harvey manages to convincingly express his ideas while maintaining a remarkably evenhanded approach. I especially enjoy the fact that he avoids the postmodernist tendency to ignore the complexities of modernism and, thus create a postmodern meta-narrative about the modernist project.
Excellent overview of modernity and post-modernity.......2001-11-27
David Harvey's "Condition of Post-Modernity" provides excellent representational cases to show the differences between modernity and post-modernity. Although sometimes difficult to follow (I had problems with the chapter pertaining to architecture), Harvey uses enough examples (i.e., economics, art, cinema, etc.) to make sure one understands the differences between post-modernism and modernism. The economic chapter, "Fordism and Flexible Accumulation" is particulary good and shows the gradual transformation from a modernist to a post-modernist economy and society. I was disappointed, however, that Harvey didn't have a complete section focused towards the differences between modernist and post-modernist lit.

A book that will stand the test of time!.......2007-09-19
An Hour! Just one short HOUR! What can the Author Dave Lakhani teach me to do in one hour?
Dave teaches you that your whole life, you very being and your futures can all be determined within how you spend a single hour. When was the last time you sat down, emptied you head of daily rubbish and focus on a task for the solid hour? No interruptions, no requests for coffee, no can you do this for me? I read the book and was astounded about just how much time I give up to help others who should know how to help themselves and all at the determent of my own success.
FEARSOME FOCUS: Remember this term as this book will coin the term and i can be sure that other books, companies and tv programs will start to use the phrase. It's an awesome book and my hat goes off to Dave and the work he has produced. Superb!

Increase your productivity one hour at a time........2007-09-04
"Power of an Hour" is a must read for anyone wanting to get more productivity out of their day. I was extremely frustrated with all the time wasted each day doing things that didn't really matter. I had started a daily calendar to schedule more "work that matters" and I had even made some headway on being more productive. Then I read "Power of an Hour" and the light came on! I discovered that an hour is a wonderful thing! I am so surprised at just how much I can get done when I "focus" on one project for an hour at a time. Read this book and you will be surprised at just how much work you can get done in one hour!
I now schedule my day around several "must do" projects. Each project receives an hour of "fearsome focus". The "Power of and Hour" shows me how to set up the hour for peak performance. You will love the feeling that comes from getting so much accomplished in just one hour. Put several great hours in your day and you will soon come to realize the "Power of an Hour". My productivity has sky rocketed! Yours will too!
Skyrocket your productivity!.......2007-08-24
I have to tell you I own a lot of books. In fact, I have a full bookshelf of books similar to this one but I would trade them all away for this one. If you find yourself short on time and want to maximize your success I say spring for this book. It is a road map to getting more done and having more of what you want. Frankly my original copy was a gift, since then I have purchased 2 others as gifts for colleagues.

Life Saver.......2006-11-03
I have owned this book since the year it was published in 1992. I have read it almost every night for the last 14 years off and on but mostly on. I am always amazed and brought to tears as to how accurate the message is on any given day. I had a breif relationship with an addict that ended over 10 years ago but this book is the one true gift that I was given from that experience as it truly is a daily message from God and has given me more comfort, solace and strength than I can describe. I plan on purchasing 2 more copies tonight.
Helpful and Inspiring.......2006-07-24
If you have ever lived with an addict or alcoholic, this book gives you inspiration and courage to learn how to be independent in your growth as a person.
Gives me much needed hope.............2005-12-28
After many many years of suffering with my husband through his addiction and then facing the hard-hitting rock bottom he went through...this book has given me the hope that I need so much.
Thankfully, my husband has since found the path to recovery "Courage to Change" helps me go through the day when I feel like I just want to call it quits.
It is also helping me through my own 12 step program...to stop being a co-dependant and living for myself.
The best daily reader I've found.......2004-04-09
This is the best daily reader I've found so far, even among the other Al-Anon books. I struggle with depression, tiredness, and having grown up the child of generations of alcoholics. Sometimes I don't feel that Al-Anon fits what I'm struggling with, and that leaves me feeling lonely - but this book almost always has something that soothes me in a deep way (which I'm despretely seeking when depression tears at me) and helps me feel stronger in that particular moment.
I read a page a day (when I remember), but mostly I use the index. I look up whatever topic I feel fits at that time - acceptance, anxiety, detatchment, fear, gratitude, mistakes, self-acceptance, self-esteem, and so on - and read all the pages on that topic. If I still feel torn up inside I look up another topic and read those pages. By the end of reading, although my problems haven't been solved, I feel a more able to deal with the world.
I've found there are a lot of useful quotes, not just the ones at the bottom of the pages but within the text. All of my copies are dog-eared and underlined, and I write a lot of quotes down to help later because often a simple phrase clicks within me whereas a torrent of wise words cannot.
In summary, this book has helped more than the many self-help books I've bought, probably because I've made it a part of my life. No book can answer my problems and the fact that I inevitably have to deal with them - difficult when I feel I just don't know how. But that's why this book is perfect; it exists to help people survive, one day at a time. It's straight-forward simplicity, without the too-sweet, new-age feel other books can have, is why it is personally indispensible.
Amazing.......2003-10-22
This inspirational daily reader helped me to get through every minute of every day for the first 5 years in Nar-anon. The fact that it is written by people who came before me and they share their information and experience, makes it so much easier to read. Not some clinical Dr. telling you what to do to fix your life, just people helping other people.

Book Description
The book begins with an overview of the constraint-based perspective on systems and organizations, commonly referred to as the theory of constraints or synchronous management. The first section will guide you through the fundamental principles and processes that are the backbone of the thinking process application tools. The second section contains the step-by-step guidelines for each of the five thinking process application tools. These tools utilize sufficient cause thinking and necessary condition thinking. Third section introduces two ways that two or more of the thinking process application tools are combined, providing robust processes for the understanding and communicating problems and solutions. This book can be used as a field guide to learning the five thinking process application tools as needed, based on their own particular issues. You will have a full understanding of the theory and practical application of these powerful processes, including when and when not to use each tool. The total benefit is not just to apply the thinking process, but to develop intuition and have the ability to combine logic and intuition in the same thinking process.
Customer Reviews:
Nice thinking package.......2007-06-06
Edward De Bono had the wonderful insight of bringing together many disparate and orginally isolated ideas and repackaging them with a binding theme he called lateral thinking. The world has never looked back. De Bono's insight and salesmanship have been a wonder to behold.
So too, Eli Goldratt has taken critical thinking skills from various areas, put a graphical front end on them, and repackaged them with a binding theme he calls Thinking Processes. Not as powerful as De Bono, but certainly in the same ballpark.
Lisa Scheinkopf does quite a marvellous job in providing a didactic introduction to these Thinking Processes. At the end of the day, she unfolds a systematic way of problem solving - and this is, indeed, what the thinking tools are all about.
I understand that Scheinkopf's choice and ordering of chapters was meant to reflect her belief that the individual tools can be used independently of each other. It would have been nice if she had provided a bit more detail showing how the tools complement each other; but, her book, her prerogative. In regard to matters which require the the systematic and complementary use of each and every tool in the toolset, I think Bill Dettmer's provides better insight.
The book is generally clear, with one or two minor slips into obscurity.
I think Scheinkopf falls into the same trap that most authors who present these type of tools. They occasionally have a rush of too much Oxygen to the brain and push their product beyond its elastic limits and start to hand-wave a little too much. In this regard, I find the "So What Test" which forms part of her discussion of Current Reality Trees one of those hand-waving areas. Apart from being something to do with simplifying a current reality tree by means of a review of "entities" from a systems perspective (whatever that really means), I find the actual application of the test as described quite obscure. (As an aside, Bill Dettmer also hand-waves at this point too. I think that both authors attempt to transform craft into some sort of science in a manner which needs a rethink).
Anyway, overall, I think Scheinkopf's work is very good. I think it deserves to be read in support of an understanding of the TOC Thinking Processes, but, it simply isn't enough to read as the only source of understanding. I recommend reading some of Dettmer's work too. Between the two (and Goldratt himself of course), the whole system of TOC and Thinking Processes adds a useful set of tools to problem solving.
Theory of Constraints -- the practical book on the topic.......2006-10-24
You may have heard of "Theory of Constraints" or "TOC" as a project management method that focuses on placing buffers on GANNT charts. But that's just one application of this general analysis and decision-making method called Theory of Constraints.
If you've ever wanted to "brainstorm" or "think outside the box," or just want to plan your next big task in a more complete way, but didn't know where to start, this book is for you. It actually offers a lot more than a start: methods, a simple notation, and when to do what in great detail.
A lot of what you read may seem like "just common sense," but perhaps that's what makes it fun: a powerful, verifiable thinking tool that's also simple and makes sense.
You don't have to read the whole book at once. Try reading some, and then applying it. See how it goes.
This Book Will Help You!.......2006-09-13
I read various books regarding the Theory of Constraints. Except for the chapter on prerequisite trees, this book explains how to use the theory very well to solve your daily problems. It also gives you a wealth of exercises that you can use to improve your practice of the theory.
A must for management and a should for anyone else........2004-10-14
This book puts it all together and can lead anyone down the path of logical thinking, be it solving a problem or creating a plan. Combine the teachings of this book with the other TOC principles and you've got a recipe for success. I highly reccommend this book to all my consulting clients and friends for use in both business and personal life.
Worth Way More Than [$].......2003-06-17
I really hesitated to pay [$] for a book that is not directly related to my profession, somewhat short, and had an unkown beneficial value. Being casually familiar with the thinking processes from It's Not Luck, I went ahead and bought the book. I'm not disappointed. In about a month it has paid for itself several times over. It's not an easy read, but if your curious enough to be reading this, you can understand it. If your a professional with a wife and kid(s), it is a must for both work and home.

Book Description
What keeps us going when times get tough? How do we act to create a more humane world, no matter how hard it seems? How do we offer models of involvement for our students when many feel their actions cannot matter? The Impossible Will Take a Little While gathers stories and essays of engagement that range across nations, eras, and political movements. These visionary and eloquent voices include Diane Ackerman, Sherman Alexie, Maya Angelou, Mary Catherine Bateson, Ariel Dorfman, Marian Wright Edelman, Eduardo Galeano, Susan Griffin, Vclav Havel, Seamus Heaney, Tony Kushner, Jonathan Kozol, Bill McKibben, Nelson Mandela, Pablo Neruda, Henri Nouwen, Arundhati Roy, Desmond Tutu, Alice Walker, Cornel West, Terry Tempest Williams, and Howard Zinn. Their voices can help us all keep working for a better world, despite the obstacles. In The Impossible Will Take a Little While, a phrase borrowed from Billie Holliday, the editor of Soul of a Citizen brings together fifty stories and essays that range across nations, eras, wars, and political movements. Danusha Goska, an Indiana activist with a paralyzing physical disability, writes about overcoming political immobilization, drawing on her history with the Peace Corps and Mother Teresa. Vaclav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic, finds value in seemingly doomed or futile actions taken by oppressed peoples. Rosemarie Freeney Harding recalls the music that sustained the civil rights movement, and Paxus Calta-Star recounts the powerful vignette of an 18-year-old who launched the overthrow of Bulgaria's dictatorship. Many of the essays are new, others classic works that continue to inspire. Together, these writers explore a path of heartfelt community involvement that leads beyond despair to compassion and hope. The voices collected in The Impossible Will Take a Little While will help keep us all working for a better world despite the obstacles.

Revied on The Impossible Will Take a Little While.......2007-02-14
Received on time and in a very well condition. Very Satified.
a much needed balm.......2007-01-17
Good things are possible, keep at it, it will take a while, but, it is not impossible! Even the review here at Amazon by Ms. Nina Rosenberg shows the uphill distance we have to go. Let's all keep walking, and even invite Ms Rosenberg along, maybe offer her a cup of tea. Anyhow, I loved this book and feel that we need to sometimes focus on what is good, and what HAS been accomplished and try to understand how it was acomplished so that we too may pave the way to greater peace, for all. Yes, not just for the USA, but for all citizens of the world. If you liked this book, I suspect you might also enjoy a book on non-violence called "nonviolence: twenty five lessons" by Mark Kurlansky.
Don't give up, keep at it, keep the faith, ward off despair!
very readable.......2007-01-12
This book managed to be easy to read despite the large amount of information within its pages. I found it to be inspiring without being too heavy, and informative without leaving me wracked with guilt and anxiety.
Love, Empathy & Hope.......2006-01-23
This is an inspirational compendium from contributers such as Maya Angelou, Jim Hightower, Jonathan Kozol, Nelson Mandela, Arundhati Roy, Desmond Tutu, and Howard Zinn (to name a few). Since the resurgence of the warfare state when Marvin Bush planted bombs in the Twin Towers, which were blown-up after they were hit by planes and the incident blamed on alleged Arabs (see "The New Pearl Harbor" by David Ray Griffin), we have been living an Orwellian nightmare. Just like before when FDR provoked the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor to make us Yanks war crazy so we would fight the Nazis in Europe and stop Russia from taking it over, we are demoralized and mired in social crisis. Hence, this compilation by editor Paul Loeb is salve to the wounded soul.
Nelson Mandela's contribution is "The Dark Years" when the South African white-led apartheid government incarcerated him and other political prisoners on Robben Island. The inmates organized and maintained their own inmate-led micro-society behind bars, which empowered them and sustained their souls.
Desmond Tutu wrote that people of faith are prisoners of hope. He said that the South African experience was God's beacon of hope, not just to the third world, but Northern Ireland as well.
Howard Zinn's contribution is "The Optimism of Uncertainty". He said "There will always be something to fear in life, but this should not prevent you from living your life, thinking independently, and speaking your mind".
Maya Angelou shared a poem titled "Still I Rise": "Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of the tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I rise."
This book is an inspiration to all in peace work.
Hope from start to finish..........2005-12-06
This book is tangible hope in a dark and murky time. The insights gathered in these pages offer a historical bird's eye view of what it means to fight for what is right, no matter the cost. The cross section of stories from around the world unifies disparate groups in a way that is needed on all levels of society today. The book came to me as a gift from a friend, and in the spirit of "Pay It Forward" I made sure that at least 3 other friends got to share in the hope that I enjoyed while reading Paul's work. The stories have further galvanized my personal and politcal beliefs and sent me in some very positive directions working for peace. What started as another casual read quickly became a manual for hope. I reccomend this to all who feel hopeless in light of current events.

Sixty Second Motivator.......2007-09-19
This is a great little book. It is written in a light style that makes it easy to read and digest the principles that Jim spells out. If you have ever tried to make a change and been unsuccessful in accomplishing your goal this little book will help you to understand why you failed and how you can increase your chance of success. I found it to be helpful both with my own personal goals and in better understanding what may help to motivate my clients to achieve their stated goals.
It Really Works!.......2007-08-08
Forget the motivational seminars, DVDs, and CDs. This little book has more insights into motivation than anything else I have seen! No hype here.
The author has taken complex concepts and made them easy to understand in an entertaining way. I use the practical tips not only to motivate my patients, but also to motivate myself!
The Sixty-Second Motivator- Book Review.......2007-06-12
Both my husband and I enjoyed this book a lot. We found it to be a neat, well organized little book written in an easy-to-understand, straight-forward style that is genuinely enjoyable while at the same time providing valuable insights about why we do or do not do things. While we found it quite analytical about key factors concerning motivation, the book didn't make us feel intimidated or "preached at". The tone of the book came across to us as friendly, low-key, very helpful, analytical and a valuable "keeper" to refer to in life's future situations.
Excellent read!!.......2007-03-08
This is an excellent read and one book you will finish reading. They say that most poeople don't finish books they buy, but this one is soo relevant to our lives that you will want to read it cover to cover several times! Keeping it in my day planner for a random quick read infusion throughout the day helps keep me on track!!
The missing link!.......2006-09-19
Having read Jim Johnson's No Beach No Zone weight loss book, I knew WHAT to do, plain and simple, and WHY it was important. So why wasn't I doing what the book laid out as a proven plan for weight loss? It's all about motivation. There's even a chapter on motivation in his weight loss book - but this book takes it one step further, into the science of motivation. Personally I think both books dovetail into one another well, especially if your lack of motivation happens to be in the field of losing weight. The science of how to lose weight permanently, and the science of motivating yourself to do anything. Once again, this is all based on research and not what one guy thinks.
One of the best surprises about this book is the way it is written. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that this book is more of a story than a collection of facts, and reads almost like a mystery. One thing's for sure, it's extremely engaging. I read the whole think in one sitting; the research and strategy don't take volumes to explain or lay out. I'm not one to read huge volumes, and Jim Johnson always makes a concise read devoid of medical mumbo-jumbo. The actual motivation chart takes up one page and really makes you think about what makes your own self "tick". The only excuse for not getting motivated is if you aren't willing to give up one hour of your time, and a little more time spent thinking straight.

Well-explained.......2007-08-13
I am certified as a Time Line Therapy practitioner and this was one of the "required-reading" books I had to read as part of my course. I've read it from start to finish and practiced it on myself as well as on others. It's been claimed that Time Line Therapy is 100% effective but I'd have to disagree on that. In my experience, it's probably about 85% effective, which is still incredible. This type of therapy can "cure" phobias, ease anxiety, get rid of fear, guilt, anger, and sadness. What I LOVE is that it is extremely easy to do and this book explains how to do it. I really don't have any complaints about the therapy itself, which (in a nutshell) simply lets you see your life as though it's super small on a timeline and you're looking at it far away. That type of view allows you to see the "big picture" of your life and fix events in the past.
This therapy has, for me, gotten rid of negative emotions easily and effortlessly. I've performed this therapy for many clients and they, too, got rid of it as well. However, some things still seem to come back. For instance, I hate hearing the sound of people eating and it causes great discomfort for me. I used this therapy and for several days, I felt I was "cured" because I could tolerate people eating without feeling irritated. It's now been over a month and I'd say that I'm about 50% less-annoyed than I was before, but not completely and totally. According to the therapy, I simply need to "go back in time, before the incident - higher and further back than before" but no matter how high I get away from my timeline (so far the timeline practically disappears), I still get irritated. Anyway, that's my personal experience. Not sure if that helps any of you, but I thought I'd share that.
The book itself is well-written and easily explained. As a whole, this really can help people on a very deep level. My mom, who is usually angry all the time, magically released all her angry emotions from the past within just 10 minutes using this technique. To this day, she no longer feels the previous anger.
Great book and a fun read!
Time Line Therapy and the Basis of Personality by Tad James, Wyatt Woodsmall .......2007-01-03
I found the information very useful, easy to read and use. You don't have to be an experienced NLP practisioner to understand and apply the material, which I can not say for some of the NLP books I have read.
Time Travel in the comfort of your own home... .......2005-08-08
I studied with, and then worked with, both Tad James and Wyatt Woodsmall in the early days of TimeLine experimentation. This book is the foundation I use when working with others and teaching timeline techniques for personal use.
The only drawback I have at all to the book is that working with a book by yourself to achieve these kinds of trances is challenging for the novice.
I say if you are a student of NLP or hypnosis, a therapist or a personal coach, the book is a good read and will give you very specific tools to work with for yourself and your clients.
If you are new to timeline theory and application you may want to have the experience of it first via audio study and then delve into the written word.
Let go those emotions.......2005-04-07
I came across Time Line Therapy during my self improvement travels and use the audio cd Journey on the Time Line which the author has also produced.
My thoughts are do I really need the book, or do I want to use the method. If you are like me, and not a specialist, you may find the audio a quicker and more effective way to put the therapy to use.
Each time, after I listen the world seems a little brighter, my memories are brighter and my outlook is brighter because I have tackled a limiting behavior or belief.
Have you ever you noticed that people seem to behave the same way over and over with a similar negative outcome because they have not known how to overcome patterned behavior.
There are situations such as guilt, public speaking, phobias, shyness, unhappiness, anxiety, obsession, self esteem. Perhaps you have a problem getting past a certain situation or trauma.
With this therapy you have the tools to address these issues, by going back beyond the first time you experienced this behavior. Can you imagine going back in time and changing the way you felt before you were in that situation and to replace those feelings with more positive emotions. Then, as you go forward in time back to the present, you see all those other similar situations and all these are replaced up to the present time and going on into the future where you visualize yourself acting in a better way.
You also visualize your life as a (time) line, with a color. As you make these changes you imagine your line filling with color. You can see dark patches, bad memories being removed.
Because you have taken this action your world has changed for the better. These changes are made on a subconscious level.
I also highly recommend EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) which is a simple acupressure technique which can be done in less than two minutes. Can you imagine easily letting go of emotional issues such as anger, anxiety, fear, forgiveness, sadness, stress, phobias, procrastination, trauma etc. You can research this further and download a free manual at emofree.com, and buy various EFT books at Amazon.
If you find this review helpful, please click yes.
3 books for the price of one.......2001-09-20
In the 260 pages of text this book contains, you'll actually get 3 books.
The first one is mostly Tad James' work and discusses the notion of "time line therapy", which are essentially NLP techniques in which a time line is used (the basic idea it to look for part occurrences of a problem that announces itself today, and "change" one's subjective experience, in order to live one without the problem - for instance, if one has a phobia of mice, go back to the first experience you had of being scared of mice, etc). You'll find more extended versions of the ideas discussed in this part in other NLP books, such as Bandler's Magic in Action, his "Using your Brain for a change" or the book "Magic demystified" by Lewis & Puchellic.
The second and the third part are mostly Wyatt Woodsmall's work. The second part deals with meta-programs, and borrows heavily on the MBTI (see Myers' "Gifts Differing) and the work of Leslie Cameron and her students (such as Rodger Bailey) - a more extended version of that work can be found in "Words that Change Minds". In the part on "values" you'll find the Graves model, which in meanwhile also has a full book dedicated to it, namely "Spiral Dynamics" by Don Beck and Christopher Cowan.
Unless you are already specialized in the topics covered in this book, you'll find them introduced in a readable way here. That by itself makes this book a good place to start. Afterwards you can always find more precise information in to the other books I referenced here.
The only reason why the book didn't get 5 stars is because it fails to quote some of the sources they got the material from, especially in the area of meta-programs. The fact that nobody filed a claim against the authors for that is probably the best proof that this material in now in "the public domain".

These are indeed cynical times. But to hide behind the smugness of cynicism is a kind of self-imposed death sentence, explains writer and social commentator Paul Loeb. In fact, now is the ideal time for gathering all our strengths and wisdom as spiritual beings and applying ourselves to shaping a better world, he claims.
Are we talking social activism here? Well, yes. But before you cringe from images of shrill, humorless, burned out activists, keep in mind that Loeb is talking about a new kind of activism--an exciting, spiritual model for creating social change. We don't have to be pious or martyred saints (as he explains throughout one chapter), starving ourselves in the name of a cause or staging protests in freezing rain. We can be "good enough" activists, assuming the task of helping 10 people in need rather than taking on the globe. We can remember the power of storytelling when convincing an audience, rather than angrily spewing scary facts. We can replenish ourselves so that we do not burn out. We can emphasize themes such as community and forgiveness rather than separatism and blame.
This is a deeply spiritual book, but make no mistake: Loeb's writing, research, and integrity are as solid as they come. Soul of a Citizen may well become The Handbook for activism at the turn of the century. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Soul of a Citizen awakens within us the desire and the ability to make our voices heard and our actions count. We can lead lives worthy of our convictions.A book of inspiration and integrity, Soul of a Citizen is an antidote to the twin scourges of modern life-powerlessness and cynicism. In his evocative style. Paul Loeb tells moving tells moving stories of ordinary Americans who have found unexpected fulfillment in social involvement. Through their example and Loeb's own wise and powerful lessons, we are compelled to move from passivity to participation. The reward of our action, we learn, is nothing less than a sense of connection and purpose not found in a purely personal life.

A non-academic book for the baby boomer generation.......2007-03-29
As many other reviewers I was asked to read this book as a part of a college course. My wife was recently assigned the reading in her MSW program. I do believe it has some value, but to a specific generation and type of activist. The book rarely (if at all) discusses a model of activism outside of that born from the peace and love movement of the 60-70s. If you are from these eras, by all means this is the book for you. If you are or will soon be a college student you will likely find little to connect with in the book. I suspect that its over use in courses at this time is a result of faculty promoting a book they feel applies to them greatly without thinking of how it applies to younger generations.
duh!.......2006-12-05
I read this book for a college class on Social Work, and although Loeb tells many meaningful and powerful stories, this is the same text I have heard before. If you read the first and last paragraph of each chapter you basically get the point. It's an easy read, and some may find it powerful, but I just found it repetitive and over-told.
A must read if you believe in service to others.......2006-10-21
Paul is an outstanding voice in our world. Fantastic book helping bring hope to a difficult time for those of us who aspire to service. It is a challenge to keep engaged in service and Paul does provide hope. I also appreciate his newsletter and recommend it to those who appreciate his work. Great insights.
Every citizen must read.......2006-08-11
I read Soul of a citizen which inspired me to action. I am now a volunteer activist in my neighbourhood and have formed a group of concerned citizens to negotiate and participate in our city's development plan. We have made an impact in the corporation and even had a few small successes along the way.
tired of it.......2006-07-09
Must we indulge yet another collection of tripe in the guise of self-help? Didn't we get this sort of nonsense out of our systems a long time ago?
If you are the type who hangs around in the self-help section of Borders looking for something you haven't yet read, hoping the nice-looking man ordering the latte isn't as bad as your ex-husband, well, sure, pick this up. You can read it a few hours later after you've snuck that man past your sleeping children's doors and out to his car, and feel good about yourself and how wonderful a person you are for reading something like this.
For the rest of us that live with a real sense of morality, well, we know books like this are just excuses - a mechanism by which the anointed democrat leftists sanctify themselves. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I wrote this review. If it offended you, you're beyond help. If it rang true, you already know you don't want to get anywhere near this book.

Great way to get inspired to action!.......2007-07-09
As I read through this book, I highlighted the pages that were of most interest to me. Now, I have ~50 ways that I personally will try to change the world. I was so impressed with this book, I ordered 12 copies to give to friends! Hopefully, they will highlight the pages that are most pressing for them and begin to take action. My only stipulation when giving the books away was that if they didn't plan to read the book and get active, they must pass the book on to someone else.
