I had a hard time putting it down-easy reading and unbiased........2002-06-04
I saw this book on the bottom shelf at a popular supermarket about two weeks ago. I had not done much free reading of late and thought it looked like a good book to get me back into a good habit and hobby. It reveals the good and the bad about coach Knight and covered a great deal of ground without getting into too much details about the incidents of Knight. Since I grew up on the Kentucky-Indiana border, I was able to watch more than a handful of Indiana's games on the Indiana basketball network and found Phil Berger's coverage of Knight's best and worst years exciting. The end of the book even has a glossary of all the IU players that made it through all four years without transferring(and tells what they are doing now). It even goes back to Knight's formative years as an assistant coach at Army and discusses Knight's shortcoming as a player at Ohio State(defense) lead him to stress defense and team-play the most as a head coach. Ex-player Landon Turner (who was paralyzed in a car wreck that cut his playing career short) praises Knight for benching him while his mind was more on having a good time off the court than being successful on the court. As far as the statements by ex-players that lead to the demise of Knight at Indiana, Mr. Burger just reports the facts and does not lash out any judgments against Knight. In summary, this is a very enjoyable book to read and will not bore the reader with too much details. Go ahead and buy it(you may finish it in one day).
An Interesting Story Beset by a Biased Storyteller..........2002-01-21
I read this book from the unbiased perspective of a college basketball fan looking to learn a little more about Bobby Knight, but Berger clearly didn't write it from an unbiased point-of-view.
There were parts that were informative, and it was an interesting read, but Berger's anti-Knight bias came through on every page, sometimes in obvious ways, and sometimes subtley, like using the word "claimed" instead of "said" when quoting Knight.
There were quite a few typos, misspelled words and grammatical errors, and they detracted from the book.
If you're only going to read one book on Knight, read Feinstein's A Season on the Brink. But if you have a little more time on your hands, Berger's is still worth the read, typos, biases, and all.
Weak - maybe worthy of a magazine article... maybe..........2001-12-20
I've read just about every book on Knight. As an IU alum who graduated one of the years that the Hoosiers won a national championship, most of the student body (myself included) - viewed RMK as a demi-God. Certainly he was blessed with one of the finest basketball minds in history.
Berger's book follows in the footsteps of three major works on RMK: Feinstein's _Season on the Brink_ (the success of which every subsequent effort attempts to duplicate); Mellen's _Bob Knight: His Own Man_ and Alford's _Playing for Knight_. All three are worth reading (especially _Season_) for the serious "Knight-o-phile".
Berger's book is definitely tabloid in appearance. Each page seems to have 30 lines of large text on it. Therefore the book appears as though it could have been printed on 75 pages in a conventional book format. The sparse text maps directly to the quality of content. It is sketchy at best.
IMO, Berger's heavy reliance upon previously published histories and newspaper articles dooms this work from the outset. The only area I found remotely interesting was Knight's childhood and schoolboy athletic career.
The remainder is a rehash of mostly negative Knight incidents. Certainly RMK deserves criticism for his histrionics and outrageous behavior that erupts from time to time. However, Berger mostly omits the litany of his positive and charitable achievements. More importantly, he never mentions what is certainly one of RMK's most engaging aspects: his incredible sense of humor. Knight, when he wants to be, is among the most humorous and quotable characters on the public landscape today.
Thumbs down for this vapid attempt to capitalize on the "Knight effect". Berger certainly can do better than this. Instead - read any of the three books mentioned earlier - they're far better uses of your time.
Don't waste your time or money!.......2001-01-14
I bought this book while traveling through an airport bookstore. Don't make the same mistake I did! The book is fluff, I almost finished it on a less than two hour flight. I was hoping to find out something new on Coach Knight given his recent dismissal, but found nothing more than a newspaper article could of given me. In fact, the entire book reads like a collection of newspaper articles strung together to make a book. There is nothing new here! If you want to read about Coach Knight, buy "Season on the Brink," so far the most definitive text on him.
Thrown together in a hurry!.......2000-12-06
It's obvious that this book was put together pretty quickly in order to make a few bucks. Typos and spelling errors were evident. I don't suppose there will ever be a definitive Bob Knight book written. Knight wouldn't collaborate because it would have to show the total man, warts and all. And most writers probably wouldn't be interested in the good deeds he does behind the scenes for many people. The man was a tremendous coach but his complete story will probably never be told. Still, it was time for a change. The lust for winning created a Texas-sized ego in Indiana. It's just too bad he went out in much the same way as Woody Hayes.

When former first lady Gwen DeVere Queen is discovered to be hale and hearty-after falling victim to a successful (and very public) assassination-the jig is finally up. Arthur Penn, aka King Arthur, reveals his true identity, and the existence of the Holy Grail, to the world.
Unable to cope with the sick and dying who desperately entreat him to heal them with the power of the Grail, Arthur accepts an offer from an entrepreneur with a new approach to health care: siphon water through the Grail, bottle it, and sell it as a curative. Flooding the market, Grail Water becomes the hottest-selling commodity in the history of humanity. Unfortunately, it's also tainting the very purpose of the holy cup's existence-and Arthur may soon discover exactly how the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Better than the second, not as good as the first, still fun!.......2007-08-17
I remember, back when I was a wee little shaver, reading the original version of "Knight Life" back when I was in high school. It was pretty darn entertaining back then, and even the special edition of it that was released a few years back was quite good.
"One Knight Only" I didn't enjoy quite as much. I'm not sure why. It was good, but there seemed to be something missing.
With "Fall of Knight", however, Peter David proves once again that he's a very good writer. Not a great writer. Not like Terry Pratchett level. But good. Very good.
You doubtless know the plot of the novel from the summary and the other reviews. The world finds out about the Holy Grail, someone has their hands on the Spear of Longinus, and the Lady in the Lake is up to something.
All good solid stuff. We also get some explaination of the details of a water-bottling operation, a scene with two Secret Service Agents named Castor and Pollux who get the best line in the book, and a glimpse at David's version of the origin of one of the major characters in the series. We also get to see the rather darker side of Arthur Penn come out to play.
While the villain in the piece is obscure enough that I had to go to Wikipedia to look him up, he still made for a reasonably solid villain, even if his motives seemed a little iffy.
Still, despite those minor flaws, I enjoyed this novel and find myself hoping this is not the end of the knight. With luck we'll see more of Arthur Penn and friends. Well, luck and good sales. So buy the book already! After all, where else might you hear King Arthur stating that you don't vote for kings?
A nice light read, witty and fun!.......2006-07-22
Peter David's wry sense of humor shines through once again in this latest rendition of his modern-day Arthurian saga. Former US president Arthur Penn, the Once and Future king, dropped off the face of the map after his last quest to find the Holy Grail and save his wife Gwen and revive her from the coma she had fallen into from a terrorist's bullet. Although the couple have been trying to relax in obscurity out in the middle of the ocean on his yacht, his movements are tracked by satellite and someone leaks pictures of her hearty and hale after her miraculous recovery. He is called back to the White House to explain what happened when he intervenes to save a reporter from a sudden illness in full view of the cameras. Faced with irrefutable proof that the Holy Grail does, indeed, exist, the nation understandably goes crazy. Everyone wants to a sip. Faced with sick and dying masses that he cannot in good conscious turn away, Arthur siphons water through the Grail, bottles it, and launches the most successful healthcare product in history.
It's not just the Grail that's back, however. The Spear Luin (spear of destiny) has re-appeared too. And Merlin is impaled upon it... If the mysterious shadow man has his way the two fabled objects will be brought together and used to wipe humanity off the face of the earth! It seems that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction so all the good works the Grail is performing has been building up a massive store of negative energy, perhaps a cataclysmic one if the two objects are used in conjunction... Additionally, while good people's health is improved by the so-called Grail Ale, evil people receive nightmares of eternal damnation and, quite naturally, sue for damages!
Overall it's a fun and rousing read. Nothing particularly deep, yet highly entertaining. Monty Python fans will find the Grail jokes and movie references even funnier. If you liked the first two books in this series you're sure to enjoy this one too.
enjoyable and entertaining fantasy.......2006-06-07
Retirement doesn't rest easy for the once and future king. After Merlin released him from the cave after spending a millennium there recovering from Mordred's wound, King Arthur travels to New York where he meets the reincarnated Gwen, becomes mayor of New York City and then President of the United States. When Gwen is wounded by a terrorist and falls into an irreversible coma Arthur searches for and finds the Holy Grail and gives it to her to drink where upon she was miraculously healed. He retires from office because the world can't know Gwen is alive and they sail into the sunset.
Happily even after isn't all it's cracked up to be and King Arthur is bored. When Gwen is discovered alive by spy satellites, Arthur and Gwen return to the white house and on a national TV show demonstrates the healing powers of the Grail. Everyone who is sick and ailing wants to drink from it and Arthur and Gwen, along with Sir Percival go into hiding until a businessman comes up with a way of distilling the potency of the water. Although "Grail Water" is a success, using mystical powers in such large quantities could cause a backlash that could devastate the world.
The humor and dry wit of Peter David makes FALL OF KNIGHT a very enjoyable and entertaining reading experience. The sub-plot of a necromancer who wants to steal the Grail and use it with the Spear Lurin to wipe humanity off the face of the earth adds another layer of excitement to a richly developed storyline. Arthur is seen as a mighty warrior, a loving husband, a person who needs to help mankind and a capable of making a mistake. In other words, the author humanizes the myth and in doing so makes him even more heroic.

tight Book.......2006-09-17
Miss the days when Suge's mere pressence would put the Ether on Busters. there are alot of Sponge Bob,Corny Pickle Leaf Turkeys out here who could use a good reminder of Suge Knight. Suge Knight ran a tight ship&had hits when Death Row was going strong. His acts didn't have to be on Rap City all Ashy&desperate to be remembered. Suge Knight kept it real when he was rolling. Suge Knight ran Product never had to be pushed on VH1 Soul, what Death row put out spoke for itself.Suge left Busters hanging over the Balcony, we sure could use that Suge vibe now again.

Hastily Compiled.......2005-07-19
Is more like a collection of articles on various topics on Suge ( i.e, his incarceration , relationship with 2pac , etc... ) hastily compiled into a book. rather than a 'flowing' autobiography. As well, it's pretty annoying when the author repeats a lot of stuff every few pages. Also , there is too little solid info of the guy ( e.g. too few interviews from people in Death Row or those connected with him. ) Hence, can't really get a solid picture of what the man is really like. Overall, is more like an academic ' analysis ' of Suge Knight based on few, random bits and pieces of information, rather than a solid ' story ' of the guy.

Beautifully illustrated mythology.......2004-12-09
This book is one in Time Life Books' The Enchanted World series. Each of these books covers a different aspect of folklore and mythology, and they are an excellent set. They tell stories in a similar format and complement each other well without repeating the content. Each is about 140 pages. Together the series makes a good fun coverage of mythology. This volume stands well on its own. You can get more detailed books about Arthurian legend. This one has detailed information but is easy to read throughout. This is a beautifully illustrated well printed volume
There is a chapter on each of the major characters in the legend: Arthur, Morgause, Guinevere, Morgan, Lancelot, Mordred and Gawain. There is enough scholarship and reference here that this can be used as an academic resource, but it is written so that it is easy to read. Often more detailed information is presented in smaller sections with pictures and captions in the margins to the chapter.
This is a beautifully bound and printed book. The binding is just cloth to collectors, but it is printed to look like a wizard's book. The cover shows a dragon holding a picture of a King Arthur brooding on his throne. I think it was the cover that got me reading this when I was child.
This is a well researched nicely produced series. For me one book in the series had me hooked. If you are interested in mythology and all things magic then it is definitely worth trying out the series. High school and middle school libraries should consider the series and especially this book since it stands alone well.
A beautiful, extravagant storybook for all ages!.......2003-09-16
There are few who don't know the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. However, this version is a bit different than the one you might be use to. For example, it's Arthur's sister Morgause that bares his son Mordred, not Morgana Le Fay. Arthur wields the sword Caliburn, not Excalibur.
This book divides the legend of Arthur into seven chapters, each spotlighting a different character. It's a fun, visually exciting way to present the story. Though out the book are woven with haunting, alluring paining and sketches, making this a feast for your eyes.
Be warned, there is sexual content, but not much. Still, I recommend this book for those 14 and older.
Just a side bar, if you buy this book and do like it, it's one of a series called "Enchanted World", so make sure you look up it's 19 siblings!

Pretty good study of a not-much-noticed Irish peerage.......2006-03-27
The White Knights were a dynasty of Norman overlords who ruled in medieval Munster and were chiefs of the FitzGibbons, the senior cadet branch of the FitzGerald family, which included the earls of Desmond and Kildare. Edmund FitzGibbon, a renegade and the 11th and effectively last White Knight, died in 1608 with no surviving sons; his lands and authority passed to a niece, and through her marriage, eventually to Sir John King, a Cromwellian captain who was created Baron Kingston in 1660. A descendant in a collateral line, who became baronets, was created Earl and the two lines rejoined in the person of George King, the 3rd earl. Known as "Big George," he was something of a feudal throwback. In 1823, he built Mitchelstown Castle, the largest neo-Gothic mansion in Ireland. The Castle survived the Famine and the land wars of the 188os, but was finally looted and burned by the occupying Republican army in 1922 as they retreated from government troops. The author is largely concerned with the house itself and with the great and famous who visited and worked there, but there is also a great deal of heavily footnoted information on the King family from its origins to the present day.
