1 out of 5 stars Timmerman is the "preacher of hate.".......2007-07-24

It's hard to miss how Timmerman is serving powerful interests by going after a very effective advocate for all working class people, not just African Americans. I hear Jesse Jackson's excellent radio show (Keep Hope Alive Radio) each weekend, and he is doing even more good work than most people could imagine. Jackson is there on picket lines when people are striking for better wages, or better working conditions. He is there when it comes to unjust sentencing regarding the death penalty, or the harsh penalties for drugs that pharmaceutical companies don't have a patent on. Jesse was there in Libya negotiating the release of a U.S. air force pilot who was being held there. Jesse is going all around the world promoting mutual respect and multicultural celebrations.
And the list of Jackson's positive contributions goes on and on.
What has Timmerman done with his life? Well, he has been paid to be a character assassin of the right-wing elite. Sometimes he'll go after individuals, sometimes he'll go after entire groups of people - like Muslim imams.
I'm sure it pays well to protect multi-billion dollar corporations from the "shakedowns" of activists like Jackson.
In an earlier period, America's right-wing would've killed Jackson, but they try to avoid creating martyrs, so they go with smear campaigns instead. Other members of the media lynch mob give Timmerman all kinds of publicity on America's airwaves, people like Sean Hannity and Limbaugh who also get paid to bear false witness in the interests of Big Business which hates activists, environmentalists, feminists, labor advocates, and anyone else who may reveal the insatiable greed of the corporate matrix.

How sad that so many fall for it; or, so many choose to be deceived by shameless preachers of hate like Timmerman.
Jesse: The Life and Pilgrimage of Jesse Jackson

4 out of 5 stars Well Documented!.......2007-05-15

I've always known that Jesse Jackson was an opportunist and a liar. Now
I see him as much more than that! He is a danger to our Country and our way of life, and should be put UNDER the jail! The poor and uneducated who listen to him don't have a prayer of getting out of poverty until this man is off the scene. Let's hope he'll take to his rocking chair soon.

I don't get it.....bright and promising young men get sent to prison for having a marajuana cigarette .....and a man like Jesse remains free! Go figure!! He was called a 'poverty pimp' and a 'race baiter' by acquaintances in the book. I couldn't agree more. It literally makes me sick to see him BLAME instead of TEACH. And if I see him 'marching' for anything at all, I become suspicious and head the other way. How sad that he takes advantage of the poorest and least educated among us.

Jesse Jackson.... A PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING!

5 out of 5 stars Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who and what is he??????.......2007-02-20

The research that Mr Timmerman did is astounding. I heard rumors years ago about how his version of the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was different from those who were present. Let every lie be reveal and the truth be exposed.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You!.......2006-07-03

Thanks so much for this book about Jesse Jackson. Jesse Jackson is for himself. He has exploited Black people and used them for his own good. Where ever there is a cause he's present. Not so much for the sake of those involved, but more or less for his own benefit. It's ashame that he has to speak for the common good of man for a fee. Before he speaks he wants to come to a payment agreement. He uses Black people. A Black problem is his gain. Black people please get hip. Jesse Jackson is a pimp in the worse way. He pimps and profits from Black problems.

What if he had won the presidential election? You talking about a mess. He would have sold the country out. Jesse came to the town that I live in to help a candidate get elected. He tried to steal the spotlight. Jesse Jackson out talked and over talked the person running for election. He uses every chance that he can get to promote Jesse Jackson.

Jesse has no shame. It's all about him. Please stop paying him to speak. There is self gain in everything he does. He is a user. Racial problems and issues are his gain. He is glad when things go wrong. THINK ABOUT IT.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book about a complete Fraud!.......2006-05-02

I've always had a thought about "REVERAND" Jackson, and this book proves it! Jesse jackson isn't black - He's just a white man that's so full of s**t tha his body long ago lost the ability to absorb it!

Shakedown is about a girl who falls in love wit a man who seems to be everything she was looking for. The main characters of the story are Paris Hightower, Tyree Dickerson, Ebony Hightower(Paris' mother), and Mrs. Dickerson(Tyree's mother).A problem that the main character,Paris, runs into is that Mrs. Dickerson threathens to hunt down Paris' mother and turn her into the police for attempted murder.
I am not able to relate to the book "Shakedown" but i know of peoplewho have went through situations of this sort in reality. Some emotions that were felt in the book were emotions that i have felt but I was able to conquer my feelings before they got the best of me with help from the4 situations in the book.
"Shakedown" is truly and honestly a good book and i liked this book a lot. My favorite part of the book was when Paris recieves help from and unexpected person. There was never an event in the book where i can say that i disliked any part or had a least favorite part.
I would recommend this book to another person. The type of person that i would recommend this book to is a person who likes fiction urban books.

5 out of 5 stars I'm usually not into books because I get bored easy, BUT THIS ONE READS LIKE YOU'RE WATCHING A MOVIE...It's that good!.......2006-08-10

I have to read a lot of technical stuff for work so when I come home I don't usually feel like picking up another book. My wife bought Shakedown on Amazon and wouldn't put the darn thing down. After watching her with her head stuck in the book for several days in a row I decided to pick it up after she was finished with it - then, it was me who couldn't put Shakedown down. It was a good book and since I haven't read a novel of fiction novel in years, it would take a good book to make me say that. I give Shakedown by Nubian James 5 STARS.

1 out of 5 stars Guyia Winfrey..........2006-06-15

well then thats just YOU,miss guyia. i buy my own books,so if i buy them, i read them and then give them to someone else. Comprende?

5 out of 5 stars If you like Terry McMillan books, you'll love this one........2006-05-14

I read the previous reviews before buying this book, some of which were great, and others so so. A previous reviewer said something about the first part of the book being slow, but I completely disagree. I bought two books at the same time, one by Terry McMillan called the Interruption of Everything, and another by Nubian James entitled Shakedown - Secrets Are the Hardest Things to Keep. I finished reading Shakedown in one week...I'm still reading Terry's book and it's going on week 4. Anyway, the first part of Shakedown is more entertaining than anything else...it sorta introduces you to some of the characters and lets you get to know them. However, the other two thirds of the book turn into a life and death thriller...whenever you get to this section it really becomes a page-turner that you won't (and can't) put down. It's also the kind of book that keeps your attention from beginning until end, because honey, if Guyia gets bored (in case you were wondering that's me) she finds something else to do with her time! To sum everything up I thought Shakedown by Nubian James was a good book and I give it a 5 out of five stars.

Book Description

Nick Nichols pulls no punches in this rousing defense of the free enterprise system. He's fed up with the corporate cowardice so prevalent among today's executives who cave in to just about every leftist cause that comes along - and he says so! His advise? Fight back! Nick Nichols says, "I wrote this book in the firm belief that something can be done. We do not need to stand by while radical activists cripple the economic heart of our society." Rules for Corporate Warriors is chock full of courageous stands, savvy strategies, and in-your-face zingers - all backed up by years of in-the-trenches experience as a crisis manager for major corporations.

We should proudly defend corporate America, says Nick Nichols, not meekly raise the white flag when its radical opponents make their demands. Who are tomorrow's corporate warriors? Nick says, "If you own a business, own stock in a business or work in a business, I wrote this book for you!"

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written and badly bound.......2006-02-12

The "useable" content of this book could easily be distilled down to 12-15 pages. Nichols uses the book as an opportunity to strike out against those that he feels have personally wronged him. The "evidence" that he draws on is heavily biased. His stated strategies are often contradictory and to top it all off the book literally fell apart...the binding is cheap. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Rules for Corporate Warriors Rules!.......2002-04-05

Rules for Corporate Warriors: How to fight and Survive Attack Shakedowns by Nick Nichols
Everyone should read Rules for Corporate Warriors! In it, PR crisis management guru Nick Nichols takes the reader on a guided tour of the billion-dollar world of unregulated NGO's, showing us the underbelly of multi-national organizations that make their money by attacking and shaking down corporations with deep pockets. Nichols not only gives the reader a ringside seat to the carnage, he also offers strategic advice about how to effectively counter and overcome these shakedown groups. Whether corporate executive, concerned citizen or activist, if you've ever been angered about the extent of corruption in even one social movement, you will recognize in Nichols' work a template for all the movements and causes that have been hijacked and corrupted over the last 30 years - from animal rights and radical environmentalism to consumer and civil rights. Rules for Corporate Warriors is well researched, practical in its approach and yet thoroughly entertaining. I urge everyone who values living in a free and democratic society to buy it and give it their full attention today.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written Corporate Diatribe.......2002-02-08

Mr. Nichols no doubt feels upstaged by his more eloquent business partner, Eric Dezenhall, and his writing ability. As he well should. I do battle with some of the same groups he describes in his book and though some of his tactics may be applicable, his hysterical and poorly thought through style of writing forced me to ignore the better parts of the book and just struggle to get through it. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Defense..........2002-02-07

Ever wonder why companies do such a rotten job defending themselves against meritless attacks? Nick Nichols tells you why. It's lack of guts and the pernicious belief that allowing your corporation to be smeared is somehow smart PR. This book provides invaluable advice on what to do when you're in the media cross-hairs. I loved the chapter about how media icon Bill Moyers covered the chemical industry with "no questions asked" because both he and PBS believe that one side tells all. A tough, funny and very serious book.

1 out of 5 stars Corporate Fascism.......2002-02-02

Some don't believe that corporatism or corporate fascism is on the rise, I think this book only shows otherwise. Corporations believe that they shouldn't be held accountable for their actions, and regard the general population as unwashed heathens for which they are to exploit... it's the new fascism, american style!

Book Description

From BOOKPAGE "A hearty welcome to musician-turned-novelist Don Bruns, whose South Beach Shakedown offers readers a high-energy romp through the uncomfortably parallel worlds of the pop music industry and the criminal underbelly of Miami. Entertainment journalist Mick Sever owes his career to pop star Gideon Pike. Pike allowed Sever into his inner circle back when Sever was a fledgling reporter, and that entrée put Sever on the map. Fame went to Sever's head (not to mention his liver and his neural synapses) as he lived in the shadow of the pop idol; his excesses cost him his marriage, and very nearly his career as well. Now Gideon Pike is in a jam, and through a mutual acquaintance (Sever's ex-wife, for whom Sever still carries an Olympic-size torch) he has summoned the writer to help bail him out. It will not be easy, though, for when Sever arrives in Miami, he finds that Gideon Pike has disappeared, and that Pike's compadres are dropping like flies. A Korean mobster adds a bit of Asian! spice to the dish, and Sever's ex, Ginny, supplies the sizzling heat. The banter, particularly between Sever and Ginny, is relaxed and believable, just what you'd expect from old lovers who are still friends. With the relentlessly action-packed South Beach Shakedown, Bruns has crafted what may be this season's quintessential suspense read." Someone is about to make a killing in the music industry.

Why would songwriting legend Gideon Pike mysteriously disappear just when he is about to turn his 30-year career into a multi-million dollar profit?

Music columnist Mick Sever is back in Don Bruns' third suspense masterpiece. This time he's looking for answers and his missing friend in the gritty backrooms of South Beach's biggest nightclubs, dodging suicide speedboats and running from sniper fire. What surfaces is how the major players in the music industry are not making the headlines, they're just pulling the strings that create them. Hit it right, and the royalties - even someone else's - can rake in millions for the rest of your life. The key is finding Gideon before Korean mobster Jimmy Shinn does. Jimmy is ready to cash in on the one secret that will bring Gideon to his knees and strip away what's left of his career, his fortune, and his life. Whoever gets to Gideon first will either save him or pull the trigger. The deadly race is on. Tami Brady, TMC Reviews "Gideon Pike goes missing. Nobody knows if the man killed his gay lover and fled, if he's hiding from the real killer, or if he's skipped town on one of his occasional trips that usually happen when Pike owes someone money. "Even after I read this book, I still wasn't sure whether I liked Gideon Pike or not. The guy seemed like such a sleaze at times, had so many secrets, and had layer upon layer of hidden lives that I wasn't really sure if I ever got to see the real man behind all the smoke and mirrors. Moreover, when finally faced with the complex realities and dynamic personality of the man, I wasn't sure how much of the made up situations and fantasies that Pike actually believed. "Despite this, or more likely because of these aspects, I couldn't seem to put this book down. I was so eager to figure out if Pike was still alive, who had committed the murders, and the real truth behind all the deceptions that I had to keep turning the pages." Cathy Yanda for Readers Views "This is not the first time these characters meet in one of Don Bruns' books. You may not have met them before, but it will not take you long to become well acquainted with them. In this adventure, Mick Sever, an entertainment writer, teams up with his ex-wife Ginny (did I mention he is still in love with her?) to solve the disappearance of Gideon Pike in South Miami Beach. While trying to locate the missing music icon, Gideon Pike, Ginny and Mick find themselves in more situations than you would find in a Jackie Chan movie. South Beach Shakedown is lean, fast paced and complex. There are murders, blackmail, dirty deeds, mobsters, near-death misses, speedboats, a cast of interesting people and plenty of scantily-clad women. If this book is not made into a movie, Bruce Willis will have certainly missed a great entertainment opportunity. "If you are looking for a book that will leave you with a great deal more knowledge than you already had, skip this one. However, if you are looking for a book that is absolutely a hoot to read and will leave you laughing and wanting more, you cannot miss with South Beach Shakedown. Once you finish, you will want to check out Don Bruns' other books as well."

5 out of 5 stars A Glam Slam for Bruns.......2006-12-07

The olives are for the pits in this glam slam number by musician turned novelist Don Bruns. Korean born mobster Jimmy Shinn chews green olives and drives an olive Lexus as he puts the squeeze on hapless superstar musician Gideon Pike. When Pike disappears after agreeing to a tell-all book, it's just another of Pike's usual disappearing acts, or so say his lyricist, his lawyer and his business manager. But rock journalist Mick Sever and his stunning ex wife Ginny, fear otherwise, especially after they gain access to Gideon's plush condo and find hints of Pike's anguish in his diaries. It doesn't help matters that Gideon's latest guy friend turns up dead on his yacht and Pike becomes a murder suspect. Mick finds himself on the wrong play list, fending off boats, bullets, bottles and fists. The pursuit of Pike through South Beach bistros, Little Havana and back streets of Coral Gables, Bruns lays Greater Miami bare, likening the sprawl "an aging lady without proper foundation garments." All right! Meanwhile, the hapless Jimmy Shinn, third generation scion of an old school Korean family puts the ultimate squeeze on Pike in a last-ditch effort to please Dad, only to be exposed by one of the little guys he so despises. Bruns serves up each of his novels with a new cocktail; Savor Southbeach Shakedown, I say. Here's a novel that goes down like a cold, sweet drink that fevers the brain while it freezes the gullet.

5 out of 5 stars Bruns at his best!.......2006-11-21

South Beach Shakedown was a really fun mystery book to read. Full of music references and Florida flair, the story flowed easily and kept me guessing from chapter to chapter. The main characters were stimulating and easy to relate to, while the bad guys were terrifying and manipulative enough to hold my interest. Like any good mystery, South Beach Shakedown had a surprise around every corner. The setting was gorgeous, yet sleazy and I liked getting an inside look at Miami's South Beach. All in all, South Beach Shakedown was a well-written, easy to read, exciting and thoroughly entertaining book!

5 out of 5 stars Fun rock-n-roll mystery ride!.......2006-11-08

I'm a total geek for a good mystery novel. But usually I am let down by either a lack of imagery or an absolute barrage of information that leaves a muddled mess in my mind's eye. Lucky for me, Don Bruns has written an exciting novel in succinct, to-the-point chapters (usually just a few pages long) that also manage to paint vivid pictures of the action and characters involved. Part of it is Bruns usage of actual locations and pop culture references, which really bring the story to life for me. His obvious broad knowledge of the music industry similarly adds to the authenticity of his storytelling. It probably helps that South Beach Shakedown is located in gorgeous Miami, but nonetheless, the story was full of useful details to help me piece the puzzle together, both with clues and images. I really enjoyed this book and am happy to have found the author.

Doyle has a premonition about a seismic shift, and when everyone becomes nervous, Angel decides to further investigate this vision. He is led into contact with the Serpentene community, demons who look like humans but who have taken over the bodies of snakes, shedding their skin over time. They live very affluently in their own community and are very fashionable and financially secure as telemarketers. Appearing very gentle and harmless, Angel agrees to protect them from a group of Quake demons, who are out to destroy them.

Cordelia is excited that Angel has taken the case, but Doyle is not too sure. He sets out to find out everything he can about the Serpentenes before they lure Cordelia into their appealing and luxurious lifestyle. Angel is beginning to get a little suspicious as well, and he doesn't understand why this "innocent" group is under attack by the Quake demons.

After some further investigation, Angel learns a little bit more about what is going on between the Serpentenes and the Quake demons. Are the Serpentenes as harmless and gentle as they appear? Does Cordelia end up drawn into the Serpentene community? Don't miss this chilling episode of ANGEL that will be sure to keep you reading at the edge of your seat!

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2002-06-24

I have yet to be disappointed by any of the Angel novels I've read so far. Very entertaining indeed. The story was awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading but ...........2002-02-04

It's usually pretty easy to tell the good guys from the bad guys. Humans are the good guys - demons, vampires, and other ghouls are the bad guys (except Angel and Doyle of course!) This black and white view gets some serious testing when Angel starts helping a group of demons known as the Serpentene. The Serpentene are being attacked by the Tremblors, another group of demons. Angel is treading lightly in the case because he is not sure his new friends are on the level - but he has to act when humans are kidnapped. Angel has to rescue humans, stop the "big one" and figure out who the bad guys are - how hard can that be?

This was a great Angel novel, but I feel that it lacked the spark that some of the other authors like Christopher Golden have. The nice twists and turns of the novel are very interesting, as are the little insights into the characters. It is not often that you are left wondering who the good guys are - and this novel is one of them.

If you don't enjoy this novel, don't let it put you off the rest of the series because most of them are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Good story, great charachterization!.......2001-09-20

I have only had exposure to Angel in the third season of the TV program, so I've never seen Doyle before. If the author captured his character is acurately as he did Cordelia's, then I've got to track down tapes of these earlier episodes!
The dialogue in this book was great. Some of the banter between Doyle and Cordy had me laughing out loud. I also enjoyed the struggle Angel had to feel part of the 21st Century - changing with the times is one thing, but it's got to be tough to do for two hundred years! The 80's flashback was absolutely hysterical.
At first the plot seemed like it was going to be pretty simple, but things got complicated quickly and there's enough twists to keep you guessing. The Angel vs Angelus showdown was cool - hope they try something like that in future epsiodes on TV. This is the only Angel book I've read, so I don't know how it compares to others, but I'd recommend it to any fan of the TV show

4 out of 5 stars Angel-mania!!!.......2001-08-15

This book was the first Angel book I read and I thought it was very good.It had mad fight scenes and good one-liners, it even had Wolfram and Hart!Ok,the story:Quake demons attack another tribe of demons called Serpentene. It turns out that the Quake demons are kidnapping people for a ritual and as usual Angel goes to stop them!the demons need people associated with the 4 elements:earth, water, fire, air. It is a great book for people who love the Angel crew. That's all from me.Hope my review helped!

Book Description

Get married, have a kid-it's not much to ask. Unless you've got to first divorce the mob. And Bobby Genarro only thinks he has, in this brutal, funny new crime novel from Charlie Stella, "who," says the Chicago Sun-Times, "may just be the best crime writer you've never read."

For three months now, ex-bookmaker Bobby G has been heading down the straight and narrow. He's got the girl-pretty Lin Yao-and he's bought the ring. Then his old boss flips and rats on his Mafioso associates. And before you can say the Mott Street Shadows, the wiseguys' shakedown is escalating into warfare with a Chinese gang in the heart of Little Italy. Bobby G has got trouble.

Charlie Stella, the author of five underworld novels, lives with his wife Anne Marie in New Jersey.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-07-08

One of the best crime writers working today. Charlie Stella is the real thing. He knows how to tell a story. Shakedown is a good place to start, but for my money, go back to the beginning and enter Eddie's World, move on to meet Jimmy Bench Press, then make the acquaintance of Charlie Opera, get to know the Cheapskates, and land on Shakedown to fully appreciate the range and development of this fine writer who earns and exceeds the comparisons to George V. Higgins, Elmore Leonard, and Donald Westlake. Charlie Stella's fiction never disappoints.

4 out of 5 stars Light-hearted mob riff.......2006-09-30

I read this one based upon the recommendation of Gary Griffiths And ripped through it in one night. This is an enjoyable, fast-paced, humorous story in the vein of Victor Gischler or Steve Brewer. If you like funny crime stories where the heroes are clever, strong and brave and the bad guys are oafish and get what is coming to them, then you'll enjoy this. This one is meant to be fun, light reading and makes a nice change-up from the edgy, in-your-face, gritty realism that I normally read.

Bobby Gennaro is an ex-bookie, retired form the mob, trying to convince his Chinese girlfriend to marry him and live the American dream, when the mafia tries to shake him down for some cashola. Unfortunately Bobby tells them to take a hike. The story escalates and the violence spins out-of-control as first the Irish mob, and then the Chinese triads, get sucked into the escalating problem. The body count mounts until the final satisfying denouement. As I said this one is fun and light-hearted despite the violence and makes for a nice change-up. I'll be ordering more Charlie Stella for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Fast, funny and violent.......2006-09-16

Ex-Mob bookmaker Bobby Genarro is not a Mafioso, he's just a guy who got caught up with the wrong people at the wrong time in his life. Things changed after he started dating the beautiful and fiery Lin Yao--Bobby quit his job, and began planning for a very different future, one that included marrying his paramour and moving far from New York's Little Italy, where he'd spent most of his life.

Intent on implementing this scheme, Bobby has purchased an engagement ring for Lin Yao, which he plans to give her at an opportune moment. Fate has other ideas, however, as former colleagues suddenly resurface, trying to extort money from Bobby on the orders of the new mob boss. Although he knows he'll have to pony up a token amount to get them off his back, the figure Bobby has in mind is nowhere near the sum the crooks demand. Unable to go to the law, Bobby scrambles to resolve the unfinished business from his past so he can pursue a brighter future.

Fast, funny and violent, Shakedown is crime fiction at its very best, recalling the work of masters like Elmore Leonard and Donald Westlake. An instinctive storyteller, Stella combines the humorous and the horrifying to great effect. The Little Italy he evokes lives and breathes, providing a realistic backdrop to the trials and tribulations of his very human cast, all of whom are very carefully drawn. Stella's cops and criminals are real people struggling with outsize problems, making for "arresting" reading.

5 out of 5 stars Dagos and Goombas and Micks, oh My!.......2006-09-07

Charlie Stella indeed lives up to what the Chicago Sun-Times describes as "...the best crime writer you've never read." And after ripping non-stop through action-crammed pages of wise guys doing bad deeds, I couldn't help wondering: "why haven't I ever heard of this guy?" Check out the dust cover and just take a look at Stella - that mug screams New York, the mob, and "fuggetaboutit." With a street-hardened rawness that makes Puzo read like Mother Goose, Stella tells the story of Bobby Gennaro, recently retired bookmaker for the mob that simply wants to settle down and marry girl friend Lin Yao, raise a family, and leave the famiglia behind. Except the Soprano-boys won't hear of it, shaking Bobby down for a piece of the action he's stowed away during his wayward days. But in the world of Charlie Stella, the Italian mob isn't edgy enough, and soon Bobby finds himself in the middle of not only the Godfather's guys, but the Chinese mob, their Irish counterparts, and a crooked cop. Suspense builds between some raunchy sex and people getting turned into Swiss cheese, leading to an inevitable crescendo of even more violence.

But a word of fair warning to the gentle readers of Berkeley or Palo Alto: Charlie Stella must have been absent for diversity training: his frequent use of insensitive terms like "chink", "Dago", and "mick" may offend more enlightened ears.

But don't get me wrong - this isn't all sex, brutality, and political incorrectness. The dialogue is sharp and authentic, and there's even room for a street-smart priest to raise the book's levels of social redeeming factors. But not that much. So trust me - Charlie Stella is the real deal, a crime writer who "gets" the streets of New York and the thugs who walk them. This may have been my first Stella novel, but definitely not my last - I've already ordered two of his earlier works.

5 out of 5 stars More to Love.......2006-07-21

When Bobby Gennaro chooses Lin Yao, and love, over his mob job, he asks for trouble and it never stops. The unique plot, hardcore/charming characters, and that realistic Stella dialogue and atmosphere--they'll keep you away from work. Criminal aggression alongside endearing human qualities and humor reach the peak of Stella's inimitable style, and his psychological insights are unparalleled. I laughed the cat off my lap, reading the church scene where mobsters discuss business in a "reverent" manner. There's much more than crime here to love.

4 out of 5 stars Bovard still spanks the ACLU in dealing out jusitice.......2007-03-20

What's great about Bovard is that he seems to have no loyalties or vested interests. He appears to be a true libertarian, even to a fault at times. For the most part this book is good at chronicling these offenses, giving them little bullet points after a brief description of each category. A lot of times that works out better than the huge over-reaching style Bovard tends to use. On the other hand, people might see these as isolated examples of absolute worst of our government. I tend to think they're far more commonplace. A huge fault of the book is the lack of citation!!! Bovard typically does a fine job notating where he got his information within the text as well as by footnote. The other issue is that now and then some of his complaints seem ridiculous or his humor is to dry to know what he's trying to get at. He's no master of sarcasm, but you start to get him after awhile. In such a simple style of writing he's not always able to make his argument as to why the government's really intruding on anything more than principle...which needs to be done from time to time so you can see why that violation might go beyond principle and into an important asset of your life.

Still, it's a good quick reference of some of the many topics you can find on how the government really truly rips off the average joe like it's their job. They're quite good at it and well over half the people in this country appear to be sheep. The ideas that we 1. live in a democracy and 2. always find democracy to be the best form of government are both ludicrous. We live in a Constitutional Republic, by the way and mob rule is NOT always right. You can consider pre-Civil War America as an example of this. Bovard would give you a more descriptive essay on it I bet. Either way, I gotta give him props for getting me to truly think on my own and find the answers instead of listening to the talking heads saying they're on my side and promoting something else. That is what this type of book does. Read it, research it and even disprove it if you can.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting stories of how the government abuses its power........1998-09-07

I read this book for a government project. It gives ironic stories of government mess-ups. The government has put itself in between a rock and a hard place when it comes to certain acts and laws. Such self-entrapments are:doctors that sue for losing their jobs because they have hepatitis and under the laws, they have the right to claim disability. This book is a quick read and does not seem to give very many sources.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, fast read on a summer weekend.......2004-07-14

Picked up a copy of Shakedown Beach after reading the New York Times' review of it. The book actually lived up to the review. Great satire -- at a time when the country desperately needs some humor -- and an interesting look at how political operatives work behind the scenes. Sometimes a bit over the top (just like a Carl Hiaasen novel), but overall, a very fun and fast read. Perfect for summer, perfect for coping with the coming election.

5 out of 5 stars HOTAND SOPHISTICATED.......2004-06-29

Jonah Eastman, a can do political operative had a whopping problem:a candidate who wont tell him the truth,a half wit trying to kill him and an election he must win. When his philandering client Rebound Rothman switches his position on riverboat gambling Jonah gets the picture_someone has some very damaging photos of Rebound.
What Jonah has going for him is the wisdom passed down from his mob grandfather, Mickey Price. He calls in Chief Willie Thundercloud,an ex wrestler with a bunch of local muscle, and Willie runs interference while Jonah uncovers, literally, the Governors secret_a molten tart named Simone Lava who the Governor has stashed in a lovers lane motel practically under the Atlantic City Boardwalk. While the scheming Governor demands that Jonah trash his opponent, an uptight WASP named Digby Stahl,Jonah suspects that Governor Rothmans problems with Simone Lavar are only the tip of the volcano.Maybe the Governor needs a get out of jail free card.Working in concert with a hot shot reporter known collquially as Barium Enema_Jonah delves into the long ago death of Nora Kelly,a one time flame of Governor Rothman that prematurely burned out.Piece by piece Jonah is drawn into a twenty year old mystery of murder ,lust, ambition and retribution that he must solve to salvage his own self esteem and save his sinking marriage.Relentlessly with a killer on his tail Jonah pursues the truth ,figuring if it wont set him free at least it will provide sufficient cash to take Rebound off his back and an honor a few outstading markers.
Written with the pulse of Atlantic City beating beneath the surface,SHAKEDOWN BEACH,is an extrordinary tale of good and evil providing readers an adrenalin rush as powerful , provacative and surprising as a dive off the Atlantic City Pier.

4 out of 5 stars A Terrific Read for Summer and the Election Season.......2004-06-24

Shakedown Beach has it all: mobsters, crooked politicians, a true 21st Century Femme Fatale, and-- just for good measure-- a former pro wrestler turned private eye that might just be Dezenhall's best character yet!

Character development really is Dezenhall's strength... he captures everything that's good and bad in human nature, adds a touch of "Jersey" and mixes it all together to form a cast so real that you will feel like you are literally "down the shore" as they say in the Garden State.

This book belongs on anyone's summer reading list, and what a great primer for the upcoming election season!

5 out of 5 stars terrific look at modern day image making.......2004-05-28

New Jersey Governor "Rebound" Rothman runs for the senate with plans to go for the White House next. However, Rebound has three-decade-old skeletons in his closet. He has hidden away one female intern, former township beauty queen winner and All American bimbo Simone Lava, in Atlantic City's Celebrity Motel, run down since the first Johnson Administration. . However, someone films Rebound's tryst proclivities.

Rebound hires pollster Jonah Eastman to fix his senate run. Jonah handed Rebound the governorship when he painted the opponent as causing a hurricane the size of Asia that destroyed rural South Jersey (do not laugh; there really is a rural Jersey). Spinning the assignation film is easy. Dealing with Rebound's support of riverboat gambling in light of a credibility gap involving crooked casino owners is complex because investigative reporter Barri "Barium Enema" Embry needs political exposés to connive his way to cross the Hudson. Jonah brings in the troops, damage control expert Chief Willie Thundercloud and nonagenarian former mob enforcer Irv the Curve to spin a tale that Machiavelli would appreciate.

As with JACKIE DISASTER, SHAKEDOWN BEACH is a terrific look at modern day image making that our leaders spend fortunes on to include painting the opponent in a bad light. Truth is meaningless as Jonah and his associates know that for Rebound to win they must provide an Atlantic Ocean size lie or two about their client and his opponent. Witty, humorous, but in many ways frightening, the story line will shake readers as they realize Madison Avenue not oil runs the country. Eric Dezenhall makes New Jersey the spin capital of the world with a tale well worth reading especially with the election coming soon.

4 out of 5 stars Could not put this book down!.......2004-05-25

I discovered Dezenhall when I read his first novel, "Money Wanders," loved the follow-up "Jackie Disaster," and have been really looking forward to this latest offering in his series of excellent Jersey-based mysteries. "Shakedown Beach," featuring the return of the wonderfully developed central character--disgraced political pollster Jonah Eastman--is a masterpiece, and Dezenhall's best work to date. I actually read it in one long sitting because I could not put the thing down...(seriously)

"Shakedown Beach" is loaded with political chicanery, suspense, scandal, love (both the 'good' kind and the 'not so good' kind), and a host of mobster-types and other wonderfully bizarre characters ("Chief Willie Thundercloud" and "Irv the Curve" being my favorites).

Probably the best thing about it, though--and something I love about this author--is that yes, this is a serious suspense / mystery-type book, but it is also HILARIOUS throughout. Lots of incredibly clever and even laugh-out-loud moments.

Great book, great author. This one should be turned into a movie.

    Book Description

As a former Secret Service Agent, Gerald Petievich brings to fiction the genuine, gritty authority of the insider. In Shakedown, his latest novel, he explores the sinister underworld of Las Vegas, where prostitutes, informers, hitmen and hustlers mix in the neon glare. One of its denizens is Eddie Sands, ex-cop, ex-con, a shakedown artist whose one weakness is that he's in love with a beautiful girl who happens to be a con artist supreme herself.

When Eddie decides to shake down a famous Hollywood star whose sex life could ruin his screen career, he sets off a chain of events that leads straight to the white-hot centre of crime and punishment inLas Vegas, and brings down on himself the attentions of Tony Parisi, the mob's kingpin in Las Vegas, and FBI Agent John Novak, a disillusioned law enforcement officer with bulldog tenacity.

Layer by layer Novak uncovers a plot which takes him to the highest levels of law enforcement, even to the steps of the White House itself, as he gradually becomes aware that his own superiors may be betraying him, and that his own career, even his life, may be at stake.

Petievich has written a taut and captivating thriller, set in America's capital of sin and easy money - Las Vegas, a city where loyalty and love are the biggest gambles of all.
