Book Description

Love/Relationships/Practical Wisdom

In this book Ramtha questions, what is love really about? Is it real or is it merely an illusion of our wildest dreams? What is it that makes us fall in love with another person? What can we expect from our relationships? What is there to learn about who we really are?

This book is about exploring these questions and about finding the secret to the paradox of love and discovering something we had missed all along about ourselves. It is a book that allows us to see ourselves reflected in a mirror, vulnerable, under the eye of truth and blatant honesty, wounded by our own hand and lack of knowledge.

After almost two decades since the publication of "Love Yourself into Life," Ramtha reintroduces us with unmatching simplicity and genius to that mysterious subject at the heart of all human longing, that elixir called love.

5 out of 5 stars food for thought for anyone seeking a sexual spiritual retationship.......2007-01-10

Ramtha explains quite well why there are a tiny few who ever experience real love. It is a must read if you ever wonder why you going through relationship after relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Many Answers and Insights!.......2006-04-02

If you have ever questioned love, sexual attraction, secret fantasies, or if you have wondered where that elusive true love that movies are filled with can be found, this remarkable book will provide many answers.
The book is made up of selected teachings of Ramtha the Enlightened One, and takes you on a journey into the realms of mind, emotions, consciousness, life, and that elixir called love. Ramtha's teachings are so filled with rich information that by the time I had completed reading and contemplating and concluding about my life, I was refreshed with a new perspective and was able to move forward with wisdom and understanding. This volume has been a profound tool in assisting me in my personal growth, and I have returned to it often, for even more insights and understandings.
Easy to read, captivating, encouraging, humorous, and a welcoming light in the window for anyone with questions about or would like to experience the magic of true love. One cannot help but relate to the many examples of humanity, and then to recognize the potentials that are waiting for us when we become even just a little aware and awakened.
Everyone can relate to the information in this book, and everyone can learn from it. I would say this information is a great addition to any library!

"Our lives... your life, and my life in the beginning - were based upon feeling. ..... Yours is based upon feeling and redemption. And you have got this all confused with love. You think that being true to those emotions is love. But you are so wrongo in the Congo".
"You all want love, the great fountain, the great elixir. To love ourself is the beginning of the quest. Attitude is everything, and you can do this. So be it".

To supplement knowledge on this intriguing subject, another compelling volume that adds food for thought and illuminates contemplation is Ramtha's The White Book, well worth reading for information on many subjects, as well as those relating to love. Another valuable title is Neale Donald Walsch's What God Wants, along with all of his Conversation With God volumes.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Not Great.......2005-03-23

Some concepts presented here are excellent - connecting on higher Chakra levels, and the fact that men tend toward the first (sexual) Chakra, while women tend toward the third (survival) Chakra.

However, the presentation leaves a lot to be desired. The book is provided as a series of (channelled) lectures. The concepts appear meandering at times, uncohesive. Particularly the 'examples' seem off base a bit.

However, if you know someone with it I would say it's worth borrowing. I got some excellent insights from reading it, though I'm not sure I would recommend anyone buying it. Now, if it was out in paperback, it might be worth the cover price there.

Book Description

An herbalist shows how to release the complete healing properties of plants by using ancient spagyric (alchemical) methods.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the Finest Books Written.......2006-11-05

Junius' Practical Handbook of Plant Alchemy is one of the finest and most complete books on working with plants from an alchemical perspective (or spagyrics) available today. It is filled with information and experiments that will take years if not lifetimes to exhaust. Extensive instructions take you through the process of making tinctures, plant stones, elixirs, the plant magistry of Paracelsus, and the Lesser or Minor Circulation for the preperation of elixirs. All of the work can be done with a few pieces of easily obtained laboratory equipment that can be used with inexpensive electric or gas heating sources. It is a book you will want two copies of - one for your bookshelf and the second for your laboratory. Required reading - and doing - for anyone serious about undertaking an alchemical journey.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to Spyragics.......2006-08-01

Originally published in Italian in 1985, this classic work deals with the spyragic process, by which, through separation, purification and recombination, a spyragist (parachemist, or alchemist, take your pick) enhances and amplifies the essential and intrinsic effects of an herb. While incorporating quite a bit of ayurvedic philosophy, it's still a text firmly rooted in Western alchemical techniques and practice, and walks the aspiring student through the spyragic process, step by step, along with herbal planetary correspondence tables which go quite a bit beyond the over-simplified Cabbalistic correspondences of the current New Age stream of thought.

The equipment specified for practice is, indeed, bona fide scientific apparati, which causes some concern on the part of other readers as to the expense. However, Dr. Junius was indeed a scientist, and head of research at various labs and technical institutes, and therefore chose to rely on precise, quality apparati. While there may be some applications of the spyragic processes detailed within that could be performed "on the cheap", by and large the higher the quality, precision and applicability of the instrument, the better the resultant spyragic. I would highly recommend that any aspiring spyragist (or alchemist) do a brief web search for discount laboratory equipment suppliers. There is an abundance out there, and for a few hundred dollars the enhanced results are definitely worth it.

3 out of 5 stars alchemy or spagyric?.......2006-02-16

I havent read this book, but I am very doubful, if this really about alchemy. I heard, that laboratory equipment, that author proposes, is very expensive and thats not a case of alchemy. Alchemy in its essence need very simple and nonexpensive instruments. There exist fundamental difference between spagyrics and alchemy and that fact many people dont realize.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy of your time.......2005-04-25

I recently began taking some natural medicines along with my husband, so I thought I would try making my own. Though I am still in the early stages, I feel confident that The Practical Handbook of Plant Alchemy has given me a solid base from which to start.

Great book. Worthy of anyone's time that is interested in learning more about the different types of herbs out there, what they do and how to create your own daily supplements.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, top flight, thumbs up.......2005-01-25

This book systematically presents both the theory and philosophy of spagyrics and the corporeal application of said philosophy in an accesible proletarian manner, perfectly fit for the lay-seeker who isn't attuned to the sometimes involute terminology that attends dated alchemical manscripts. There are countless exserts from spagyric texts from such illustrious illumined exponents as Johannes Isaac Hallandus, Paracelsus, Basilius Valentinus (and more) which are generally followed by a delicatessen recapitulation by Manfred M. Junius, who breaks it down into manageable simple terms. Don't despair, for those tyros going into this book not knowing a lick of the ideas and axioms of the alchemical work will most unequivocally come out transmuted into knowledgable cognoscente of the natural science of Khem. Rove hand-in-hand with Paracelsus collecting morning dew from the manorial sward of your higher genius.

      Book Description

A comprehensive alchemical guide to plant extractions and their health benefits

      • Shows how spagyric methods “open” medicinal plants completely to release powerful healing properties

      • Provides a history and philosophy of spagyrics that reveal why Western medicine fails to recognize the full benefit to health offered by plants

      • Connects spagyrics to classical alchemical, hermetic, and ayurvedic traditions

The practice of spagyrics is the application of ancient alchemical working methods to the preparation of tinctures, essences, and other products from medicinal plants. While ordinary tinctures and infusions use only a part of the great curative potential of plants, spagyric methods “open” medicinal plants completely to reveal their more powerful healing properties. Drawing on the rich imagery and symbolism of ancient source materials, Manfred M. Junius describes these methods in great detail, showing readers how to prepare plant remedies alchemically for their own use as well as imparting a knowledge of the ideological world in which alchemistic and hermetic thought flowered. Spagyrics includes the Plant Magistery of Paracelsus and the Life Elixir recipe of Andreas Libavius among its historic techniques as well as a wealth of scientific information that demonstrates the greater efficacy of alchemical methods of plant essence extraction. This classic source text preserves the nearly forgotten but highly valuable methods of this true hermetic art for preparing natural remedies.

      Book Description

Elise Collins has created the perfect guide and recipe book of smoothies, teas, and tonics to help us transform our overall health and vitality. Her restorative recipes contain powerful superfoods, herbs, minerals, and ph-balanced liquids designed to nourish the physical body and revitalize its central energy system—the chakras.

In Chakra Tonics, Collins outlines a brief description of the chakras and addresses the source of health problems in our energetic bodies, describing how the tonics assist the subtle body and chakras to release stale energy that, if not processed, can lead to disease and illness. She also describes ways to use these healthful drinks in combination with yoga techniques in an ongoing preventative manner or in conjunction with a specific meditation, visualization, or affirmation to enhance its power.

Our chakras are hungry for the right stuff. Whether they're sluggish in the morning or slumping in the afternoon, spinning out of control by sundown or asleep at the supper table, there's a tonic that will help. Whip up the Blueberry Listening Shake to give your metabolism a boost or try the Sunrise Juice for lasting vitality from the moment your feet hit the floor.

5 out of 5 stars Chakra Tonics: Essential Elixirs For The Mind, Body, And Spirit.......2007-07-16

Chakra Tonics is a multifunctional book. This book starts off noting the basic foundational beliefs about chakras, explaining that there are numerous philosophies and interpretations and the reader should explore these variations in order to come up with his or her own theories in this regard. I really found this aspect refreshing as many such books never admit that there are alternative thoughts on the subject let alone encourage the reader to make up his or her own mind.

The rest of the book explores each of the chakras describing the location, purpose, color, sound, and various problems often associated with energy blockages. Included for each section are recipes that the reader can replicate. The intended purpose of these recipes is to balance out the energy in particular chakras.

All of the recipes provided are either fresh juicing recipes or smoothie recipes made with fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts. In my mind, these recipes simply provide new and creative ways to provide healthy energy building nutrition into the body rather than opting for caffeinated, carbonated drinks that reduce natural energy. If they also help balance chakra energy that's just an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and healthy at the same time...........2006-06-13

Whimsical little book which artfully combines healthy juice/smoothie/tea recipes in relation to the corresponding chakra. Such a creative idea, i think this book would make an interesting gift or excellent conversation starter for someones coffee table. Thank-you Elise Marie Collins.

5 out of 5 stars Elixirs for the spirit........2006-03-13

CHAKRA TONICS: ESSENTIAL ELIXIRS FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT could also have been featured in our Spirituality section but is reviewed here for its broader appeal to audiences interested in juices, shakes, smoothies and drinks which have healing and beneficial properties as well as taste appeal. From a Fig Shake with cinnamon believed to help diabetics to a high vitamin C Hibiscus Shake, drinks are very easy to make up with a minimum of specialty ingredients and CHAKRA TONICS organizes recipes by health benefit for easy consultation.

5 out of 5 stars A healthy review of energy and elixer.......2006-02-12

I found this book to be a nice read on the energy centers in the body and the means for promoting healing and wellness. Nice combination granting one the opportunity to expand their conciousness and delight in the elixers that heal each aspect.

Elixir is a novel poised, sometimes awkwardly, between the demands of philosophical speculation and those of hang-on-to-your-hats suspense. Gary Braver's biotech thriller takes as its premise the existence of a fountain of youth: when Chris Bacon, a dedicated medicinal chemist for Darby Pharmaceuticals, journeys to Papua, New Guinea, in search of "miracle drugs that grow on trees," he finds much more than the contraceptive plant steroids he was looking for. He discovers tabukari, the "forbidden flower of the long day"--a blossom with the power to prolong life.

When his bosses, and other powerful and unsavory characters, discover that Chris has successfully synthesized a formula for immortality, the scientist and his family become the targets of a ruthless manhunt. What the bad guys don't know is that Chris didn't stop at injecting lab rats with his elixir; he is himself participating in a dangerous experiment. Braver effectively conveys both Chris's burning desire to test the fruits of his labor, and his wife's prophetic understanding that those fruits are far more lethal than anything Eve might have given Adam:

They were silent for a long spell, and Laura felt the old anger burn itself through the sadness. Chris had brought this upon them himself. In a monumentally stupid act he had injected the stuff into his veins thirteen years ago and forever infected the very fabric of their lives. While she understood all the forces that had driven him to that act, she could never forgive him. More than anyone else alive he was able to foresee the consequences but had chosen to disregard them instead. And while she felt pity and compassion for him, there were moments she hated him for what he had done.

In addition to metaphysical speculations on the social consequences of living forever, biotech thrillers demand action, suspense, car chases, villains, breathless pursuits, guns, meaningful glances--you name it, Braver provides it, and it's an unholy mess at times. His sense of plot is shaky, and the novel falters whenever it moves away from Chris and his family (and even they can become a bit tedious). But Elixir is more successful than the sum of these parts would seem to allow; in taking on the power of research and genetic manipulation, Braver has plugged into a hot topic, and he largely does it justice. --Kelly Flynn

      Book Description

When biologist Chris Bacon headed for the unspoiled rainforests of Papua New Guinea in search of medicinal plants, he had no idea that he would bring home a rare flower rumored by a tribal shaman to prevent human aging. Driven by fountain-of-youth dreams, he plans to turn the flower into an elixir of youth and health. But as Chris begins tampering with the ultimate secret of nature, he unleashes forces that not only threaten his own family, but expose the world to unimaginably horrific consequences.

      5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Stop Reading.......2007-03-22

Everyone hears about the book you can't put down. ELIXIR, by Gary Braver,is such a book. It is one of the few thrillers I WILL read again. Chris Bacon is a trained biologist in search of medicinal plants, but returns from Papua New Guinea with the 'Fountain of Youth.' Now Braver poses some very big questions. Would living for centuries, maybe forever, be too much of a good thing? Where will everyone live if people don't die? Suppose members of families disagree? What will be the new policies? Who decides?

The author draws you in to this potentially changed world, but unfortunately some things never change. Greed, corruption, jealously, murder, all play a part in the compelling plot. This book should be a movie. Someone once said, Man is Nature's sole miatake. Braver shows us why.

      5 out of 5 stars Braver's New World.......2006-04-13

I'm the same age as the hero of the story (Chris Bacon) when he worked on producing the Elixir drug in the first half of the book. Despite his efforts and successful experiments, the drug has a terrible consequence. As I read this fast moving and thrilling story, I wondered if I would want to have Elixir available so I could live much longer than the lifespan nature has given me. Would the side effects be enough to make me fearful of taking Elixir? Would the social, environmental and moral consequences be enough? Where would all those billions and billions of people live if they didn't die? Or would the promise of staying young and never aging be too much of an attraction to ignore?

Braver doesn't just write suspenseful thrillers with good guys and bad guys in conflict with each other. He gets us to think about what can happen when something so promising and not really that far-fetched descends upon us. What will humans do to themselves and their world? Will they do the right thing? But what is the right thing? These are hard questions. Braver does not provide easy answers and we wouldn't want him to. He makes you care about the characters, think about these questions and also enjoy the ride he's taking you on. Any fiction writer capable of doing that deserves five stars and a recommendation to read his books.

      5 out of 5 stars Bio-Pharma Thriller.......2006-03-01

A gripping bio/pharma thriller with the allure of forever young and the concequences.
Braver moves your imagination closer to reality in this fine novel.

Two weeks ago, I discovered a book called Flashback. It looked interesting, so I picked it up at the library. I was hooked at the first sentence. I then ran to the library where I picked up Grey Matter. I'm telling people "This man can flat out write." (That's a southern expression). I am now about to finish Gary's first Braver book: Elixir. Yes, I read them in reverse order; so, sue me.
I have become besotted with Braver's writing and I will BUY his next book, and all that follow. Hope Mr. Braver makes it soon.
I have advised all my friends, family and fellow readers to discover this fascinating writer. I mean, Robert B. Parker loves this guy!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Good effort..........2007-07-01

The author used to be a Physics Ph.d. candidate. Keeping this fact in mind is useful when reading the author's books. The literature survey is pretty good and reflects the author's not inconsiderable intelligence. But the incremental improvements which the author tries to offer in order to advance the state of the art (in the manner of a Ph.d. thesis) are just that: incremental. That does not in any way take away from the considerable effort which the author has obviously put in and the author deserves praise and recognition for this effort.

5 out of 5 stars Substantial Advance and More.......2006-08-06

I thought that this book was a substantial advance on the understanding of the ideas of Gurdjieff. Yet it goes beyond this by introducing new ideas that I believe would have been very acceptable to the original fourth way schools of thought.

Almaas has provided us with some of the most sophisticated means of overcome egoic attachment in his most well known book, Essence. Using his knowledge of Sufism, Buddhism, psychology to describe the universality of essence and what we can do to reclaim it has earned him some well deserved recognition. Connecting with our essence,i.e. the core of ourselves that cannot be distorted, perverted, damaged, etc. is no easy task and really takes a lifetime (or lifetimes) of effort. Almaas describes the false shell of personality that we all have in various degrees and the importance of working through /dissolving this shell (which fuels narcissism, insecurity, defensiveness, the desire to control others, consumerism, etc.). Reading Essence will be a perfect introduction to this author's extensive body of work. Embarking on reclaiming your own essence should not be taken lightly at all-so please read this wonderful book before taking the first step towards genuine enlightenment.

"four book Diamond Heart series, and the three Diamond Mind series also by this obviously enlightened author".. Unfortunately, being enlightened doesn't insure that one is a good writer, nor that he is able to teach enlightenment. This writing is the most tedious, repetitious that I've read. It (7 books) could easily be condensed down to a single chapter or an article. Some good insights, but nothing worth plowing through all the words. At times it seems words are just flowing, just to fill pages and he ultimately forgets what his point was going to be and never arrives. The author should respect the reader's time a bit more, the point is not to fill enough pages to make a book. But ultimately I don't see what the other reviewers saw in these books, more worthwhile to read the clear and concise Huang-Po or Foyan or Krishnamurti or Nisargadatta etc. for more to the point direction.
"Almaas has answers unique".. for the mystic, there is only One answer, it's the method that a teacher must provide.

      5 out of 5 stars Remarkabe introduction!.......2002-10-09

If you are seriously interested in a supremely structured avenue to realizing the truths to our existence, this is the place to start. I've read the four book Diamond Heart series, and the three Diamond Mind series also by this obviously enlightened author. Any doubts I had after reading the "Snorsville" review were squelched soon after understanding the experiencial and profound approach offered by this teaching method. Almaas is and should be revered by his spiritual peers as a true groundbreaker in this realm. There is no blind faith here. You only need to comprehend what's written so articulatly, and if you like myself are seeking truth about who and what we are, Almaas has answers I've seen no where else in my many years of seeking through books and teachings. If you make it through all of the "Mind" series you're understanding of the "work" will be profoundly enhanced to the point where you will be convinced that his approach is unmatched in it's teaching and truth.

Update... Since I've written this review many months ago I have read all thirteen books on The Diamond Approach and my learned opinion still stands but ever stronger. I may not be a "former Monk", but through my sincere and intense study of this emense body of work over the past four years, and the integration of this profound teaching into my spiritual practice/life, what's been proven to me beyond any shadow of a doubt, along with countless other students of "The Diamond Approach", including Jack Kornfield, is that this should not be regarded as a waste of time. Although many themes are repeated throughout his teachings, I think we all need to be reminded over and over again of the deepest truths as we so often have the tendency to gravitate back to our condtioned patterns in our hectic lifestyles.

Do not take my word for it, or anyone elses (with the exception of Almaas). Do your own homework and you will find the truth in these books and most importantly, within yourself as I have.

4 out of 5 stars Very extensive, very technical.......2006-05-03

This book is basically transcripts from various channeling sessions, but the information is very detailed and very useful. Anyone exploring the Lemurian and Atlantean uses of crystals will enjoy this book.

The process is a bit in-depth and fairly intense. It may be difficult to follow every one of the steps, though the process can be simplified, as it is by other authors. Each of the entries becomes somewhat repetetive after some time, but the information may still be useful. Most valuable to the practitioner are the tables of prescribed uses and mixtures of elixirs.

I look forward to the reprint of this book very much.

Gurudas' work has been amassed over several decades of his own practice and also through thorough research. This book is a phenomenal source of both esoteric and technical information, providing such a scope of vision surrounding the use of gem and other vibrational elixirs as to - well, virtually blow one's mind, quite frankly! The information is most definitely broad ranged, and yet extremely concise. The format of the book makes the information very accesable. And the possiblities for even further exploration and discovery implied within the pages of this book are wonderously infinite! - Mrs. Leah Wroten Sinderamnn

This is an excellent book! Gurudas describes the effects of gems, gem elixirs on you. This book I trust the most, because gurudas seems to be very persise and pure. You will be amazed how he is right about the effects of gemstones when you do your own elexiers. I persive gem elixirs as very effectiv, both spiritual and physical.

As psychologist and flower essences therapist I occasionally turned to gem elixirs and other vibrational ways to cure. I have found in Guruda's books a safe guide to my work. I recommend this book to all of those who are in search of new ways to approach the pain and sorrow of their clients to enlight their lives better. Since 1994 I have been working in a research in health field, prescribing both flower essences and gem elixirs with excellent results. Gurudas is essential to understand this subject. Book Description

In the year 3003, nothing in the world is the same, except maybe that adolescents are still embarrassed by their parents. Society and the biosphere alike have been transformed by biotechnology, and the natural world is almost gone.Frek Huggins is a boy from a broken family, unusual becaise he was conceived without technological help or genetic modifications. His dad, Carb, is a malcontent who left behind Frek's mom and the Earth itself several years ago.Everything changes when Frek finds the Anvil, a small flying saucer, under his bed, and it tells him he is destined to save the world. The repressive forces of Gov, the mysterious absolute ruler of Earth, descend on Frek, take away the Anvil, and interrogate him forcefully enough to damage his memory. Frek flees with Wow, his talking dog, to seek out Carb and some answers. But the untrustworthy alien in the saucer has other plans, including claiming exclusive rights to market humanity to the galaxy at large, and making Frek a hero. Frek and the Elixir is a profound, playful SF epic by the wild and ambitious Rudy Rucker.

5 out of 5 stars Rucker is both a literary and science master.......2007-01-16

I fell in love with Rucker's work after reading Spaceland, and Frek and the Elixir proved to be yet another science and literary masterpiece. Rucker makes the most complex aspects of science obtainable to the average reader who has a bit of imagination. Rucker is a pure creative genius. Frek and the Elixir is a wonderful tale that I would highly recommend to any reader who enjoys imaginative stories that offer a bit of science education at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Godzoon Goggy Gollywog.......2006-08-21

This has got to be one of the most inventive and imaginative novels in recent memory. Rudy Rucker has created an astonishingly creative story by mixing well-drawn comedy and drama with the latest knowledge in biotech, computing, and quantum physics. Not to mention a visual richness that will turn on the inner freakiness of even the most stoic reader. Here we have the adventures of 12 year-old Frek, who lives in the 31st century in a world of forced conformity, and where a megalomaniac biotech corporation has eliminated most of the Earth's life forms, patented the genomes of the few remaining utilitarian species (including humans), and prohibited reproduction except by contract. Meanwhile, several different species of aliens are trying to turn the human race into a giant reality show, via interactive technologies controlled by weird multi-dimensional demigods. In short, Frek is the chosen human negotiator, and decides to bargain for the return of Earth's lost species in a deadly high-stakes production deal, becoming a hero in the process.

Thanks to Rucker's knowledge of advanced science and the wildest future possibilities of technology, this novel benefits from a setting and characters quite unlike most sci-fi. The story is overflowing with crazy but strangely possible biotech and interactive technologies, while Rucker has also turned up the creativity meter with loads of inventively bizarre and truly "alien" aliens (I especially liked the wisecracking Orpolese and the droll Unipuskers). Rucker has also envisioned a completely mindboggling method of space travel called yunching, which is based on actual currently-known concepts from superstring theory. In a few places, Rucker lets the plotline slip while breathlessly inventing pile upon pile of future phenomena, but this is a novel that is as relentlessly fascinating as it is fun and empathetic. There are even good themes of friendship and family lurking beneath the wild and wooly sci-fi wonderments. This novel is highly recommended for any reader looking for something both really new and really different. [~doomsdayer520~]

4 out of 5 stars Fun novel full of biological, mathematical, and physically cool ideas.......2006-05-18

Here is a rather delightful novel from Rudy Rucker. Frek and the Elixir is set more or less at the next millennium -- to be exact, in 3003. Hundreds of years before, NuBioCom destroyed the remaining natural species on Earth, and replaced them with a very few genetically engineered variants. They even destroyed the records of the genetic code of the natural species. Now, in 3003, Houses are grown from trees, the only pets are dogs, much of the food comes from anyfruit trees, and in many other ways it is clear that species diversity is rare. Frek Huggins is a 12-year-old boy living with his mother and his two sisters. He resents the fact that his father, Carb, left for the asteroids several years before. His life is nominally fairly pleasant but he doesn't quite fit in.

Then a flying saucer shows up, looking, it appears, for Frek. Frek is suddenly the object of the not-entirely-friendly attentions of the "counselors" of Gov, the worm-like alien that controls his city. He finds a saucer under his bed, and inside it is an alien cuttlefish, who assures him he will save the world and find the elixir that will restore the natural species to Earth. But Gov's representatives are not happy, and soon Frek is fleeing, at first into the dangerous Grulloo woods, home to many unusual kritters such as the Grulloo, intelligent people consisting of only a head, a tail, and two arms. Frek and a Grulloo make their way to Stun City to free the captured saucer and kill Gov -- but that doesn't work quite as expected. Soon they are off on a trip around the Galaxy, and indeed to different "branes". The situation is a lot more complicated than expected. Frek is to act as agent for a group of aliens who want to control the broadcasting of human experience to eager alien "viewers" -- but that broadcasting might also include mind control. And there are other aliens interested in controlling the same rights. Moreover, Frek meets his father, in the company of his new girlfriend and her daughter Renata. Naturally, sparks fly between Frek and Renata. So things continue, with visits to a number of alien milieus, some really fun and wacky SFnal ideas, and with Frek always keeping in mind not only the saving of the Earth's ecosystem, and the freeing of humans from potential mind control, but the restoring of his family.

I don't think I've really captured the fun of this novel very well. Rucker has long been known as an ideas man, and he doesn't disappoint here, with a couple of nicely portrayed alien species, some interesting mathematical and physical notions, and lots of clever biological ideas. The plot is not quite as successful, though it is fun to follow -- still, Frek's powers grow alarmingly as the novel continues, and the ultimate resolution, though emotionally satisfying, isn't fully convincing. The novel, with its 12-year-old protagonist, has a rather YA feel to it, though distinctly in the "YA to please adults" mode -- that is, I think it's a novel that will wow teen readers, but it's also quite fun for adults. I liked it, at any rate!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Story; Excellent Allegory.......2005-12-02

This book is simply one of the best science fiction titles to be written. The main character is young, true, but this is soon forgotten in the complex, intriguing, and yes, allegorical storyline. The book is Rucker's denoucement of monoculture, a perfect statement for our day and age. The innovation in this book is spectacular; no old reused ideas here. I strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars amazing adventures in the space-time continuum .......2005-09-13

A joyful, picaresque novel full of mind-blowing concepts from veteran mathematician-cyberpunk-sci-fi writer guru, Rudy Rucker.

It's 3003. Earth is a true nano-biotech Eden. Or is it? Well, families live in comfy house trees, food comes from the anyfruit tree, friendly dogs can talk to their masters but...

...there are only 256 highly-tweaked species created by the powerful NuBioCom corporation who also destroyed the Earth's original biodiversity in 2666...

Sure the families might have a happy time inside their house tree but the Gov is trying hard to keep them in line. (Gov - government - giant media-controlling brain-washing worms, now that invention won't need a 1000 years to be accomplished on this planet.)

Also there is the small problem of alien species determined to turn humankind into a massive reality TV show, each human monitored and more or less tele-controlled by an alien "player" to spice up the aliens' own boring lives.

Frek Huggins (a modern Frodo Baggins?), a twelve-year-old kid becomes humankind's unlikely hero and only hope after a few clashes with Gov, NuBioCom and a dozen different alien species.

Frek has no choice but to navigate the whole universe, visit different galaxies, enjoy or suffer the physics of different dimensions while fighting for his own sanity, his life and his friends and family. Can he also be the one who finds the Elixir, the DNA blueprints of all the lost biodiversity of planet Earth? Will he also free humankind from government, corporate and alien influence?

This post-modern odyssey sounds like a recipe for big time disaster (a few Hollywood script writers would fry their brains after the first scene) but Rudy Rucker pulls off the impossible with a surprisingly joyful, intense and interesting novel. Other than him it may only be Paul Di Filippo (Fuzzy Dice, anyone?) who can convincingly push his heroes through ten dimensions, hurl them into a sun or have a billion cartoon characters fight the last crusade.

Early in the book the English words and familiar mental images run out - Rudy forged some 80-100 new words to describe as many astonishing concepts regarding life in the 3000s, alien species and the joys and perils of intergalactic or transdimensional travels.

The ever wilder adventures and the thought-provoking ideas jump at the reader with an alarming speed every half page or so. Science, science fiction and a great dose of humane concerns about our future mix with a ripping yarn.

The intended audience (science fiction or science fans) might find it weird to follow a twelve-year-old character through interspecies business dealings, psychedelic space travel or battles against biotech-enhanced monsters, omnipotent aliens and evil governments. Hopefully, twelve-year-old kids, too, will pick this book up and allow it to create another few trillion neural connections in their developing brains.

Perhaps the protagonist could have been older. However, if the child is a metaphor for humankind's lack of knowledge regarding sustainable living, space travel or using and not abusing advanced technology then I suppose we can live with that.

The novel may be a little long or is just the right size at 460 pages. It is hard though rewarding to get through all the high concepts. The joyful, humorous writing does compensate for the effort.

The only negative aspect might be the frequent recaps on the adventures. Every day or so (as the majority of the novel spans the most exciting fortnight in Frek's life) the boy is thinking about the grand adventures he just had and we get a ten sentence summary of the last 40-50 pages. If we spent a whole delightful chapter in that galaxy or among those aliens why do we have to read a review at the end of that adventure. This happens probably 6-8 times in the book and I find it jarring.

Rudy may have wanted to follow a children's tale structure where you have to remind the children what happened just a little while ago. As the audience most probably will be in their twenties, thirties, forties, this may be unnecessary. Don't worry about our attention span, Rudy.

All in all, a very strong, enjoyable novel, hundreds of great new ideas, profound, gripping insight into our own government-, media-, globalisation-controlled lives.

For all aspiring writers and people fascinated by a writing process or a humanist thinker's mind, you can read an additional 145-page PDF document available for free download from Rudy Rucker's website. It is full of detailed notes and deleted scenes, the triumphs and nightmares of the whole novel creation.

Rudy did wrote a few pages on how old his hero should be, he was considering adolescents, teenagers, young adults and even burnt-out adults.

He mentions that he followed a heroic "monomyth" story structure, making sure that chapters reflect various significant parts such as "meeting a temptress" or "atonement with the father". This gives a strong push to the events and we don't get lost in the wonders of these super-weird worlds.

Three (million) cheers for such a brave and ambitious attempt. A true myth for the space age. Kids, please track this book down before the H-P reading fever leaves your veins.
