Book Description
The last of a manufacturing dynasty in a dying industrial town, Bill lives alone in the family mansion and works for the Truth, the moribund local paper. He yearns to write long philosophical pieces about the American dream gone sour, not the flaccid write-ups of bake-off contests demanded by the Truth. Then, old man Lawton goes missing, and suspicion fixes on his son, Ronny. Paradoxically, the specter of violent death breathes new life into the town. For Bill, a deeper and more disturbing involvement with the Lawtons ensues. The Lawton murder and the obsessions it awakes in the town come to symbolize the mood of a nation on the edge. Compulsively readable, The Keepers of Truth startles both with its insights and with Collins's powerful, incisive writing.

Connect/disconnect.......2004-10-10
Bill is a washed-up reporter trapped in a place that he doesn't want to be. His inheritance from his father left him wealthy, but only on the condition that he stay put in the dying mid-Western town where he was born. He has no motivation beyond finding things to make his life there bearable. He is permanently inside, but by virtue of his money, permanently outside.
The murder that occurs gives Bill an at least temporary reason to get up in the morning, and provides the reader with an excuse to examine the details of small town life with clues that do not fit together and a crime which is, after all, a crime just like any other.
The qualities that earned this book a Booker nomination were obvious yoon reading. Collins is a skilled writer who manages to provide a smart, outsider look at small town life in the US. The tone and the plot work well together in the a palette of claustrophobia and surreality that never indulges in self-conscious tricks or far-fetched coincidences.
A fine book-- a read that made me want to find more by Collins.
American Dream.......2004-05-04
Michael Collins gives an intriguing look into the mid-west America, offering an absorbing crime story/ dark comedy/ character study. Phil is a reporter from a local newspaper named "The Truth" who starts working on a murder case that happened in his town. The main suspect of the crime is Ronny Lawton, the victim`s son. Along with his newspaper mates Sam and Ed, Phil begins a complex investigation where he tries to prove Ronny`s innocence, since he thinks that he wasn`t the murderer. In the process, Phil develops a strange and unexpected relationship with Ronny`s ex-wife Teri.
Michael Collins manages to deliver a somewhat interesting crime story here, focusing the peculiar envoironment of an american little town as well. As the story evolves, the investigation scenario turns more confuse and complex, presenting intriguing new elements. Collins takes this situation as an example of the fall of modern civilization, using it as a starting point to deliver some thoughts and ideas about post-industrial systems. Although he raises some food for thought at parts, most of his observations soon become repetitive and tiresome, creating a couple of uninteresting and boring chapters that damage the flow of the book. The resolution of the murder investigation is also a weak element to the story, providing a disappointing and anticlimatic finale.
Despite its flaws, "The Keepers of Truth" is a gripping and relevant effort nonetheless, delivering a clever analysis of today`s societies and entering the shadow zone of the "americann way of life". As a whole, this novel is a witty and well-written work that drags in some moments and is a tad too long, but it suceeds in presenting the strenght of one of the best Irish writers around.
A keeper, indeed.
Brilliant! You won't be disappointed..........2004-03-14
Mr. Collins writes like a house on fire! It is rare for me to enjoy a book so much, but this author's use the language is scintillating. The storyline and characters are quirky; the locale is bleak and depressing, but the descriptions of both the setting and internal landscape of the main character are captivating. I also greatly appreciated the author's observations about the post-industrial despair that befell this fictional midwestern city; observations that are occasionally humorous, often poignant but always convincing. But again, the author's use of language is so exceptional that I almost didn't care who the characters were or where the story was leading. I just wanted to bathe in Mr. Collin's delicious prose. If you love fine writing, you won't be disappointed!
A Revealing Dark Vision of America by an Irish Writer.......2004-02-13
Bill, a law school dropout, is living in his home town because his cryogenically preserved grandfather has made it a condition of his will. Bill's father killed himself shortly before the he came home and he had a breakdown because of it and is slowly rebuilding his life, despite the break with his girl friend Diane.
He gets a job working for the dying town's dying newspaper, "The Daily Truth," which is run by two old men, Sam, the owner, and Ed, the paper's photographer. Sam and Ed believe Bill, who is somewhat of a wordsmith and given to fanciful prose, will someday turn out to be a good journalist.
Salvation for the newspaper comes when Ronny Lawton's father disappears. Lawton is a tattooed burger flipper at Denny's, who despite having reported his father's absence, becomes a suspect for the presumed murder. The case re-energizes the "Truth's" disillusioned staff, but the initial promise of a scoop for Bill gradually translates into an obsession with Lawton and his estranged wife. As the crime casts its shadow on the lives of his newspaper colleagues and on the nightmarish reverberations of his own father's suicide, it also begins to take on symbolic dimensions as many people in the town try to take advantage of the murder.
Michael Collins won the Irish Book of the Year Award for this book and it's easy to see why. It deserves the high esteem it has won in Ireland and I highly recommend it.

Disappointed.......2004-01-27
Our book club read this and was disappointed. We thought the town that was the setting for this book was overdrawn -- too black and white. Many factual inaccuracies make the book seem very implausible. Some are on trivial matters but some go to the heart of the book. Specifically, the book assumes that the disappearance of a man in the midwest would be covered by the New York Times. Preposterous. There are many inaccuracies like that. Since the book revolves around a reporter for a small newspaper and his reporting of a crime story, these inaccuracies go to the heart of the book. Also, there does not seem to be any progression in the main character over the course of the book. He seems to be just as misdirected and rudderless at the end of the book as he is at the beginning. No character development at all. We noticed that the author is an Irish national. Perhaps the book perpetuates some European stereotypes about the midwest. We didn't think it really represented the real problems of small town America in any realistic way.

The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13
Truth Be Told is not your ordinary Christian Fiction novel. Far from preachy, Victoria Christopher Murray has crafted a page turner that takes you on a spiritual journey into the lives of Grace and Conner, a well-to-do African American couple who seem to have everything perfect, until a secret surfaces and threatens to shatter their marriage and test their faith. Although the plot is a staple in many books, Murray adds a fresh twist of faith that will keep the attention of her readers. Mrs. Christoper Murray has indeed mastered the art of contemporary ministering through story-telling.
Wasnt for me.......2007-05-10
This was the first time I read a book by this author and the story just was so unrealistic and predictable for me. Its a decent read and I would purchase another book by her.
What's done in the dark, comes to the light.......2007-04-03
Like always, Victoria seems to bring marriages through tough situations but in the end, God gets the glory. This was a story of a man having an affair before he became a christian. Once he learned years later that he bared a son during his affair; the truth had to be told to his wife in order to live a normal life.
"Truth Be Told?...So What!".......2006-11-01
There's really nothing to say about this novel other than it was boring, predictable and the chapters were too long to get to the point.
The Truth Was Some What Told.......2006-01-07
This is the 3nd book that I've read by this author. This is a good story about infidelity and how a family deals with a child out of wedlock. Although this was a great story-line, the author failed to go into detail regarding the underlying issues regarding infidelity and lack of spiritual connection with God. Rather, the author scrubs the surfaces of both these issues.

Wild and Crazy Vegas Guide!.......2005-08-05
This book proves that Norm Clarke is the "go to" guy for anything and everything that has to do with what's in or not in Las Vegas. It is so much more than a guide, although it has lists for must-see resorts, hottest nightclubs and the Strip's best shows. It is also filled with fun facts on Vegas history, wildest wagers, and famous local characters. Not all of his statistics are accurate (Mickey Rooney only got married 4 out of 8 times in Vegas, not 8 out of 8, and he married Ava Gardner in Ballard, CA, not Sin City), but I still recommend this book as a great source of information.
Vegas Confidential: Norm Clarke!.......2005-04-09
This is a great book for anyone coming to Las Vegas. It covers everything from where to go, what to do and where to go to be seen. The in places and the hottest night spots, everything that makes Vegas, Vegas. If you are planning a trip to Vegas and want to know the ins and outs, here is your guide for the most up to date information on our city.

Insider's Guide to Sin City.......2004-09-16
"1000 Naked Truths" is an indispensable pocket guide for your next trip to Las Vegas. This book has insider tips for getting the most of out Sin City, whether you are on a budget or not. If you are raring to purchase a $1000 dollar martini - Body English at the Hard Rock Hotel is the place to go. At the other end of the spectrum might be the Double Down Saloon. Norm Clarke also takes the guess work out of where to hang to see the most outrageous celebrities and provides detailed scenarios for the ultimate bachelor parties. He also supplies a very handy list of the "top 10 places to propose" and "the top 10 oddest jobs" to be found in Las Vegas.
It is a very cool book, one that will provide ample intel about "what's hot" in Vegas right now and the best part is that after a short reading of it, you can seem to be as connected as Norm is.

The plain truth is..........2007-01-24
Everyone goes through a stage of frustration with society's inherent dishonesty. In "City of Truth", James Morrow shows us that the alternative may prove even worse. The city of Veritas has strict prohibitions against any form of dishonesty, and each citizen is subjected to electroshock treatment during their teenage years to wean them off disengenuousness. The result is inevitable: people drive Ford Sufficients and threaten their neighbors with Smith&Wesson Metapenises; they leave their children at Camp Ditch-the-Kids and burn the works of great poets for excessive use of metaphors. The opening section of the book is the funniest part, with Morrow throwing out these one-liners fast and furious. Unfortunately there needs to be a plot. The protagonist learns that his son has contracted a fatal virus. His only hope for survival is to be buoyed by a misleading prognosis, thereby giving him the will to survive. Hence our hero embarks to Satirev, the city of lies, where pigs do fly and the Pope really is Jewish. Further adventures down there show him that lies also leave a great deal to be desired. All in all, a decently funny and appropriately short social satire.
Sucky New-Age Tripe!.......2005-11-26
Don't waste your time trying to join the Cult of Morrow. There are plenty of deserving writers who need your support. This book...sucks!
Iým all right, Jack. Who cares about you?.......2004-05-10
"City of Truth" is really two short stories, three if you count the brief final section. Each section is almost worth its own review, because they are so different.
City I is a description of a society where people have perfect honesty literally burned into their brains. It's incredibly funny because it contrasts so completely with our own feel-good consumer society. Politicians candidly admit that they accepted kick-backs; a salesperson tells you where to buy an item more cheaply from a competitor; restaurants sell "murdered cow" sandwiches with "wilted lettuce."
The odd thing is that the city is rather a flat, cold place. Parents critique their kids' drawings ("It's pretty ugly.") and romance is replaced by the brutal, hurtful truth. After a while, you long for someone to say "Have a nice day!" with a big smile, instead of truthfully expressing their complete indifference.
City II describes a rebel group which teaches people to lie again. The treatment involves exposing disciples to genetically-engineered impossibilities: pigs that fly, dogs that talk. Why this is supposed to help isn't entirely clear, but it enables a father to tell "kind lies" to his terminally sick child. The problem is that the boy can see that his father is lying: This is one case where honesty would be the best policy. City II is a real tear-jerker.
City III has the family leaving both the Truth Tellers and the Liars and settling for the kind of messy mix that we have: trying to tell the truth as far as possible, but making space for poetic license and white lies. That's fair enough, but there are no revelations here. Most of us feel this way already.
Consider the five stars all for the first section and well worth them.
Empirical or True.......2002-12-13
Here is an initially sharp social satire set in a city where you must tell the truth and lies are against the law. The authorities have literally scared lying out of the population. The book starts hilariously with the citizens of Veritas telling it like it is - ending letters with "yours up to a point" and eating at a restaurant called Booze Before Breakfast. It turns out that Veritas is really obsessed with empiricism (based only on observation and rules) rather than the much deeper "truths" of life. Morrow brings up this point very briefly in chapter 5, but unfortunately fails to expand on this intriguing theme. After that brief insight, the book becomes nonsensical and melodramatic, as the main character escapes to the secret city of Satirev to deal with the real truth about his son's fatal illness. The city of Satirev, in which people are allowed to lie but ultimately are more truthful, is a ridiculous construct that is hard to take seriously, while the story devolves into sentimentality rather than the sharp social observation that was hinted at earlier. Morrow's examination of the real meaning of truth, even if lying is necessary to achieve it, ultimately does not materialize even though he was really onto something big for a while.
Audacious.......2002-09-19
James Morrow is a writer after my own heart. In City of Truth, he takes an audacious idea--what if everyone always told the truth?--and uses it to show that there's something much deeper. We learn that while truth is beautiful, it can also be incredibly ugly. And that, while lies are despicable, they also have a place. And while we learn these things, we also get to laugh at some great imagination, as what would advertising be like if it had to be truthful (I especially enjoyed the "new" Surgeon General's warning on a pack of Canceroulettes, not to mention Camp Ditch-the-Kids). Morrow's got a way with this; his Full Spectrum story, "Daughter Earth," contained many of the same elements: a light, humorous tone encasing a serious, yet not dull, meaning.
Book Description
This riveting inside story of the intense search for the Salt Lake City teenager who was kidnapped from her bed reveals never-before-told details of the largest investigation in Utah state history. Paced like a thriller, this true account moves between the parallel stories of the searchers and the abductor. The firsthand account of Tom Smart, Elizabeth's uncle and one-time suspect, reveals the details of the flawed police investigation, the media's manipulation of the family, and the eyewitness account of nine-year-old Mary Katherine Smart that went largely ignored by investigators. New research is presented on the family background of disturbed street preacher Brian David Mitchell, who kidnapped Elizabeth as part of a bizarre polygamous plot. Also examined is the critical role of the media, revealing the essential part played by John Walsh and others in facilitating Elizabeth's safe return, and the manipulative influence of Fox News and Bill O'Reilly. Going beyond a mere eyewitness account, the book includes information culled from interviews with more than 150 people involved in the search and investigation, notes from family meetings, and memos from law enforcement officials.
Customer Reviews:
the startling truth behind the elizabeth investigation.......2007-08-05
i enjoyed this book but thought elizabeth was being taken advantage of by her parents and uncle.she should of been kept in seclusion and not been subject to the public.i feel that in the future this young lady is going to have some problems.
Very disappointed in this one. .......2007-05-13
I read this book and I almost feel like it was a serious waste of my time. Tom Smart (uncle of Elizabeth Smart) seems like he is trying to take the stage in this account. Everything in this book you have probably already heard through the media. The book has a very slow start--almost excruciating to get through the first half. I was bored to tears.
I feel for Elizabeth and her Family and would have liked the focus to be on them, their reactions, their feelings, and on Elizabeth's recovery. The nation cares about Elizabeth and how this has affected her and not about Tom Smart's INSOMNIA.
One day in the far Future, hopefully, Elizabeth will write a book and let us know the story of being a survivor, her feelings, and her journey to overcoming this trauma. After all, no one else knows what she and her poor parents went through.
Bottom Line: I found this account to be One-sided and Exagerrated on the Author's part. Tom Smart wanted the Spotlight and Shame on him.
I would not recommend to a friend for Good Reading.
Read, Read ,Read!.......2006-06-13
The first time I Read this, I felt like Tom Smart was talking to me Everyday. I'ts so cool, I think the book should tell about everyone else but pervert and pervet Jr. I understand you have to see why he kidnapped Liz, but his mindset is that of President Bush, Stupid and hateful. Everything you need to know about her abduction is all in here. A great read. Don't read it too many times at once, It might scare you.
Interesting but her parents book is a little easier to read.......2006-01-28
I was completly stuck on the Elizabeth Smart case when it was all unfolding. I was graduating high school at the time and couldnt imagine with all the dreams I had having them all stolen in the middle of the night. The book is a good read and really details the case well. The only problem I had is the book seems very very one sided. The brother talks all about how much he did and the others did and I kinda felt like he was acting as if he was the parent. It may just be the way I read it but I did find it interesting to get a good profile of the people that took her. Its worth a read but dont forget to read her parents book too.
--Compelling--.......2005-12-17
IN PLAIN SIGHT is the story of the investigation to locate Elizabeth Smart, the teenage girl who was abducted from her home in Salt Lake City. Journalists, Tom Smart and Lee Benson wrote the book. Tom also happens to be Elizabeth's uncle and served as the spokesman for Elizabeth's family during the horrible kidnapping ordeal of his niece.
The search for Elizabeth went on for nine long months and this book is an account of what took place during that time period. Aside from the shocking fact of a young woman's abduction, is the story of the local police and FBI who searched for her, but often seemed to ignore the information that was brought forward by family members and volunteers. The authors also claim that the investigating agencies didn't seem to share the information that they had obtained with each other. There were several sightings of the girl, and the man who had taken her. At one point, after breaking into a building, he was arrested, but released when he said that he was just trying to make a home for his wife and daughter.
This book presents one side of the story, but the FBI and local police probably had other things to take into consideration with their examinations of the events. Apparently the family was investigated and we've all seen enough news stories to know that everyone is looked at when a crime is committed. Unfortunately, we've also heard a lot of stories about the lack of cooperation between different police agencies.
This was an informative book and hopefully the Smart family can overcome the horror that took over their lives. I'm sure the heart of every parent in the world goes out to Elizabeth.
Book Description
On the night of Monday, May 4, 1998, in Vatican territory, the bodies of the commander of the Swiss Guard, his wife, and a young lance corporal were found in the barracks of the picturesque force entrusted with protecting the pope. It was the worst bloodbath to take place in more than a century in the heart of the supreme authority of the world's one billion Catholics. Four hours later, the Vatican announced that the lance corporal, twenty-three-year-old Cédric Tornay, had shot the couple, then committed suicide in "a fit of madness" brought on by frustration with the unit's discipline -- a conclusion it reaffirmed after a nine-month internal inquiry.
But as John Follain's hard-hitting exposé shows, the official report was a travesty, a tissue of suppositions, contradictions, and omissions. Based on an exhaustive three-year investigation, City of Secrets reveals how the Vatican, the oldest and most secretive autocracy in the world, staged an elaborate plot to obstruct justice -- and hide the scandals it dared not confess.

Wake Up Call for Catholics.......2006-10-31
It's so easy being a Catholic in the United States: priests who are your buddies, who stop over for Thanksgiving meals, know your kids by name, offer wholesome, practical advice for marriage and high school football, and who will have a Bud Light with you in the early autumn afternoon.
Not so easy when you're a young member of the Swiss Guards in the Vatican: priests are not your buddies, priests refuse to counsel you, your fellow Swiss guards insult your use of French and give you punishments when you don't deserve them. If you were a Swiss/French Guard, you might never come of age. You might be dead.
As we have found in some public schools throughout the USA, bullying can lead to mass murder when those being bullied see no other way out. Such is the situation in John Follain's CITY OF SECRETS. We Catholic readers have our eyes opened to the reality of the closed-society that is the Vatican.
If you want to keep your eyes closed to the severe problems within our beloved church, don't read this book.
If you think having a secret society, OPUS DEI, propagandizing side-by-side with the true mission of the church, then you absolutely must read the book. You have been sleeping as have I.
Be prepared to be shocked. Or, have the politicizing and manipulations found in the American church's pedophile scandal already opened your eyes wide?
by Larry Rochelle, author of HOME SCHOOLED.
a pleasant change.......2005-08-06
In that it gives a look at some other murders outside of the mysterious death of John Paul I, this is a refreshing book. Yet, since it does not invlove a Pope it is likely to suffer unfairly from less interest. I recommend you not pass it up. An alternative is Lucien Gregoire's "Murder in the Vatican" which takes one on a methodical imvestigation of the murder of eight men which combination was the leadership of the progressive movement in Church - including the 'murders' of John Paul I and Paul VI. That all of these men died mysteriously within a few months of each other itself would arouse ones suspicions - but Gregoire offers much more than just that. I would recommend you buy these books as a package.
Great read........2005-01-01
This is another book that deals with the hypocrites in the Vatican.
People seems surprised when their hear of crimes in the Vatican, but this is an organization that supports and promotes priest who molest little boys.
The latest example of the lies and hypocrisy of the Vatican can be found with this week's tsunami.
The official newspaper of the Vatican had a spurious and misleading report that falsely claimed the Israeli government had denied emergency relief for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka.
The official Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano singled out Israeli leaders for declining the country's request for emergency help, when in fact the Israeli government's offer to provide a team of medical and security personnel was rejected by the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry. However, Israel is providing an airlift of food and medical supplies to Sri Lanka.
Can you believe that? The Vatican defends priest who are child molesters yet has the gall to falsely criticize Israel.
GOOD READING.......2003-07-04
ALTHOUGH THE BOOK I THINK DOES NOT FINALIZE THE CONCLUSION, I FOUND THE METHODS THE AUTHOR TRIED TO PASTE TOGETHER THE BITS AND PIECES OF TRUTH OR INFORMATION WELL WORTH THE READ. IN THE END I THINK THE BOOK ANALYZES THE CHURCH MORE THAN IT SHOULD BUT THEN AGAIN WHY NOT?
Behind the Vatican murders.......2003-07-03
The strength of John Follain's book, based on his four-year investigation, is that we end up with a firm understanding of why Tornay did it. City of Secrets is both superb journalism and an outstanding example of forensic psychology.
Secondhand investigations of sensational crimes are often nothing more than instant books. However, Follain not only took the time to contribute something of worth to the canon of crime journalism but also exposed weaknesses in the Vatican that need addressing. In this case it is the fact that the Swiss Guard, supposedly responsible for protecting the Pope, are nothing more than toy soldiers -- Dennis Chute, The Edmonton Journal

Smokescreen.......2000-02-08
Save your money on this book. It does contain some very important facts concerning the explosion at the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, but nothing new. If you want to know facts about the entire treasonous terrorist act, then spend your money on Freedom's End, and Other's Unknown. These particular authors were there, with first hand accounts of the truth, and the withholding of information by the U.S. Justice Department, and other agencies. This book by Mr. Rappoport, lacks depth, and has more filler than substance. Although he is concerned with the act of terrorism and treason, he just does not have enough facts about the case in general.
Well written and concise.......1999-09-03
as a government employee i know where many of his points are coming from and knowing of the fbi agent in charge (now over a state agency) I know well that everyhting he has written makes more sense and is more likely than any of the garbage the government has produced.
finally, bravery helps shine the light of truth !!.......1999-09-01
As an employee of a city somewhere in california, I am veryfamiliar with massive cover-ups. This , the book is a concise anddetailed report of the facts and how it is impossible for one sole individual to carry out the greatest mass murder this century. He was set up, framed by a power hungry United Nations satanic conspiracy. It is about time some one has become brave enough to speak the truth !

Urban Echoes and Affirmations -- Recommended Reading!.......2001-02-20
Lynnor Latham Graham has presented a work that is at once a critical commentary on the failure of America to save a generation of young black males and a poignant cry of hope --of affirmation in the face of adversity. His medium is poetry, touching every piece of the underclass experience: the central cultural place of the black woman, the disaster that drugs brought to poor neighborhoods in the 1980s, committed juveniles graduating to penitiaries and graveyards, the promise of Christianity.
Graham's personal (and considerable) experience with inner city life shines most brightly in his work. The small assaults of stereotyping as well as his daily struggle to open new doors to the "young brothers" he works with as a counselor in a juvenile detention center in Boston, Massachusetts are especially touching pieces.
This work is as relevant for majorities as much as it is for minorities. It provides a unique and unrelenting glimpse into a place where hopelessness and the threat of violence prevail.
Too many of us turn our heads and look the other way. Graham has breached the silence and beckons us with a grim reality check lined with the promise of a new day.
