A great little book.......2007-10-03
This book was on Dave Ramsey's suggested reading list and I am very happy I got it. It is a great little book that I could not put down. The story shows how people can get conflicted with business, money, and the church and how these conflicts play out later in life.
Books is great, Amazon sucks.......2007-09-24
This review is more of Amazon's failure that anything detailing the book. Amazon has this listed as a "hardback". When I received the book, it was paperback. I asked for a replacement, which they promptly sent. However, it was another paperback. I tried using their telephone service but got someone that spoke poor English. The best I could understand they were going to correct the issue and send a replacement. It's been weeks with no word. Who knows what the guy actually told me.
Outstanding Book.......2007-07-05
What a wonderful book about life, money and relationships. You will have a tear in your eye when you finish the book. Quick read.
ABC's of entreprenuership.......2007-05-07
The Monk and the Merchant is a great book to educate on the nuts and bolts of the correct philosophies of running a business...stay out of debt, persevere, be ready and paying attention when opportunities come.
This book is great for those thinking of starting a business or for the ones who have existing businesses but need a good reminder of what the overall strategies should be.
practicalbudgeting.com's Merchant and the Monk Book Review.......2005-10-25
Practical Budgeting's Review of
The Legend of the Monk and the Merchant
This book is written By Terry Felber, World Publishing
This is a book of one man's version of how to live a life honoring God in his chose vocation, either as a minister or in the marketplace. The story mostly unfolds as to how to honor God in the market place, yet a glimpse or two are given into the life of one chosen, by God, to live in full time service to telling others revelations from God and expounding on the scriptures (Sunday sermons).
God gives businessmen the resources to help fulfill the calling of the priests, who have given their own time and resources specifically to serving God and to blessing the businessmen (page 32 with Revelation 1:6 referenced).
The story is not bogged down in theological discussions and references to scripture are in a conversational manner, as we all should do. God has given his words to us ... we should use them and internalize them as if they were our own.
How we should live our life is about serving God ... either full time helping others to come into God's presence (as a priest) or in the market place, creating the wealth to support those in full time service (as a King according to the author).
This is not a prosperity gospel where we are promised enormous material wealth if we do such and such. Scripture has simply promised us if we obey then we will prosper. There are more ways to prosper then simply money.
However, with the interpretation of Revelation 1:6, the author takes a dangerous theological leap to what I would believe to a wrong interpretation as one would take the verse in context would quickly reveal. On page 30 of the book, scripture is misquoted and then used as justification for his position.
After researching the word "king" in this verse (author uses the King James Version), I do understand how the he came to such a conclusion that the word Kings is a reference to businessmen (merchants). The word means a foundation of power and in our world those who have money usually have the power (influence).
This idea of Kings and Priests, set forth, however, is a compelling one and the theses for the entire story. It would have been far better, and more credible, had the author simply stated what a great idea and concept it is, signifying it is his belief that the reader should act in such a manner, as opposed to adamantly tat this concept is what scripture clearly teaches in Revelation 1:6.
Other than this specific and obvious theological misrepresentation, the entire book's principles (including people wither being Kings or Pries, albeit the author's definition of such, are ones we should embrace and incorporate into our daily lives.
The following life and financial principles are set forth by the author and weaved throughout a captivating story line:
* Work hard and God will prosper you, Deuteronomy 28:4, 28:12, 28:1
* Financial prosperity is connected to soul prosperity.
Jeremiah 29:11, Matthew 6:33, Luke 18:18-22, Luke 18:24-30
* A man must do whatever he can to provide for his family, II Thessalonians 3:10
* Trials develop your character, preparing you for increased blessings, Romans 8:31
* Take responsibility for problems that are the result of your own bad decisions. Don't displace the blame, I Peter 5:8
* See challenges as stepping stones, not as obstacles.
* Be meek before God, but bold before men, Matthew 5:5
* Loaning money destroys relationships.
* Live debt free and below your means, Romans 13:8
* Always keep to your budget.
* Set aside the first 10% to honor God, Malachi 3:8-10
* Understand the power of partnership.
The Legend of the Monk and the Merchant has a compelling story line, well written and, with the exception of the Revelation 1:6 interpretation explained earlier, scripture sound.
I highly recommend this book and would consider this required reading to anyone who wishes to read a great perspective on how to honor God with his vocation and money.
Find it at a library or Amazon has it for about $7 used.

St. Martha Parish-Wide Bulletin Book Club December Selection.......2001-12-02
The monks of the middle ages can be heard singing Ave Maria, Ave Maria from the glossy, A. Joseph Barrish, S. M. illustrated pages of the St. Martha Parish-Wide Bulletin Book Club December Selection. Barrish, working with Schoenstatt Sister of Mary, M. Jean Frisk, has created a brilliant reminiscence of the time of incense and flowers in the Roman Catholic Church. Frisk, who holds a masters in Theology with Marian Concentration and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, gives us legends and meditations to ponder as we look at Barrish's stunning, full-page illustrations of dozens of flowers that bear a name or a mythical relationship to the Mother of Christ.
This selection leads us through our shared Christian spirituality in the natural beauty around us through a history of flower legends and names using flowers of the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Flight into Egypt, Maternity of Mary, Mary as Homemaker, Mary at the Cross, and Devotion Rewarded.
Among the legends told in mystery plays of the medieval times is that of Madelon who having nothing to give the Babe Jesus was led by the Angel Gabriel to roses blooming at the girl's feet. "The French poet, Emile Blemont, ended his story of Madelon with this quotation: Though thou art poor and hast no gold to bring, Though ice-bound earth no Heaven-sent flowers bestows, Yet give thy heart this Noel to thy King. This is the Legend of the Christmas Rose." (p. 48)
In addition to an excellent appendix, index, and bibliography of gardens and plant listings, this book also is a personal Mary Garden planner. Just in time for Chistmas gift exchanges to allow you to give more knowledge of Faith in a vibrant, beautiful, and interesting way. This quality publication gives artistically, as Christian art has, to those who enjoy studying the nobility of the world around them, as well as to those who plant gardens! (St. Martha, Okemos, Michigan Foundations in Adult Education, Fr. Jon Wehrle, Pastor)

Calming, inspiring, can't wait for spring.......2000-02-03
Mary's Flowers was a keeper from the time I opened the box. The cover drew me to the book, and as I skipped through the pages I knew for once in my life I had to begin on page one and continue.........not my usual way......I begin in the back........the drawings are magnificent, the stories fascinating and the relativity between the flowers and the Blessed Virgin truly inspiring. The book is one of the highlights of my collection. I only wish I had written it.... JoKay Miltenberger Arcanum OH

Beautifully written and illustrated, this book inspired me to plan my own garden with some of the flowers it mentions. The botanical watercolors are practically a garden in themselves! A great resource for gardeners.

Magick not History.......2001-11-20
As a student of mysticism and the occult myself I am consistantly astounded by the western mind's inability to integrate the use of the creative, mythic and dynamic imagination with the intellectual capacity to reason.
Those who have given this book a poor review, in my opinion, haven't one whit of experience in magick or pathworking. Pathworking requires trust in subjective experience while at the same time taking cues from history and "myth". It isn't one or the other. To make it only imaginal is akin to a daydream while to make one's journeys purely historic is to lose the symbolism and meaning of the "essense" of the material.
The Arthurian Quest by Amber Wolfe is quite good and is a pathworking and magickal system, NOT A HISTORICAL, ACADEMIC WORK! It contains valuable and insightful uses for the myth cycle in a shamanic and magickal manner and merely provides tools, doorways in a manner or speaking, to contacting the currents or powers behind the symbols and stories.
The power of the Arthurian tales (pre-christian celtic) is in the messages and power between the words and what is gained from the pathworking or ritual experience. Without the validation of experience and commitment to the work, the tales are just tales and useful for nothing more than a good story on a cold evening.
There are plenty of speculative "historical" works on the Legends of Arthur and Camelot, but the fact is that they are all speculative. Keep this in mind. Enjoy the tales, do the pathworkings, rituals and visualizations with the mind of a mage or even an Archmage and they won't only make sense, they will get profound results.
In Light and Love.

Where Joseph Campbell left off . . . Uniquely useful........2000-04-27
This is a very useful book. Where Campbell and others have described the factual details and mythical implications of the Celtic Arthurian traditions, "Arthurian Quest" is an organized and descriptive war chest of related tactical tools. The uses for these tools for enhancing one's traditions and psyche, as well as their derivation and historical background, are included and well written.
The book makes no pretence that it contains ancient, secret, mystical information. The historical and mythological data within is well established. The ideas put forth are based on common sense folk wisdom crafted with modern psychology and sociology. It is clearly up to the readers to apply these tools strategically and intelligently to achieve their personal or group goals.
Amber Wolfe is ignorant of medieval history........1999-06-14
Amber Wolfe is ignorant of medieval history. As an historian whose focus is the middle ages, I can state unequivocally that Amber Wolfe is completely ignorant of medieval history. She is so obsessed with discrediting the medieval church that one wonders whether her historical blunders are intentional or not. The book is a complete waste of money.

Fiction and Fantasy Another book about so-called non-fiction researched by one of the worst writers to appear on Amazon. Don't waste your money. Nothing but fabrications, innaccuracy, fantasy, and bogus claims. If you want to know the facts, visit your library and find a book written by someone who knows what they are talking about.

As a new Strait fan, I enjoyed this book very much........2005-10-26
Some of the information in this book I have seen elsewhere, but some was new and interesting. It's nice to have so much about Mr. Strait in one concise book. I liked his music before I knew who he was or that he was the one singing so many of the songs I liked on the radio. I know he is a very private person, and doesn't give out many interviews. Yet I didn't feel like the book pried too much, or that I was reading speculation or gossip. Much of the facts are from news already in print and stories from people who knew him only casually. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to any new Strait fan, or even an old one.
A Real Legend In Country Music.......2000-06-04
I cannot say enough about this book,George is my all time favorite and the book says it all.How George got started and how he kept on going even after the death of his daughter,it had to be so hard for this man to sing some of the songs he does,George to me is real country and I am so glad I purchased this book.
I love George Strait, so when I saw this book I got it........1999-09-14
It is so hard to find memoribilia of George Strait, so when I saw this book I knew I had to have it. The only way you can get other stuff of his is to join his fan club, and that is expensive after awhile.
I loved the book as much as I love George!!!!!!!!!.......1998-09-30
I thought the book was very interesting. At times it is dry reading but it was very factual and I learned alot about George.
IT WAS HORRIBLE.......1998-09-23
This book is a complete and total embarrassment to anyone who, like myself, personally knows George. Half of the content is pure filth, while the rest is easily available in the box-set and/or in some of the CD covers.

Enlightening.......2005-02-22
There are people who will wonder, after reading this book, if one can remove all of what Ranke-Heinemann calls "fairy tales" from Christianity and still have a practiceable religion left when you're finished. I would answer that yes, you can. And if you can't, you have a highly impoverished understanding about what the gospel is all about (which is true of most Christians, unfortunately).
Ranke-Heinemann, an eccentric but brilliant theologian, focuses her efforts on deconstructing the "fairy tales" of the Christian tradition, and does so with a good sense of humour. At first she comes across as very anti-faith, but this proves to be a false impression. It is only the false beliefs that need to be put away.
She makes no effort to "reconstruct" Christianity after she's finished "deconstructing" it, but this is not the point of her book. If you want to find a fresh approach to Jesus, I highly recommend Marcus Borg's "Jesus: A New Vision" and "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time."
An earlier reviewer suggested that someone who likes the writings of Jack Spong will enjoy this book as well. This is probably true, but the comparison is far more flattering for Spong than it is for Ranke-Heinemann. Spong's books are never as well-written or well-argued as this. Spong is a lightweight compared to Ranke-Heinemann.
One of a few books that will really make you think.......2004-10-17
This book was recomended to me after I read Eunichs for the Kingdom of Heaven (another real thought provoking book). This isn't a book where a pissed off person starts going off on religion and such with no logic or reason. She is thoughtful and careful, giving many good refrences for each topic. What she says makes sense. Even if you are caught up in the fairy tale and all, read this book. It can help make sense of your beliefs.
Wise and witty.......2003-05-23
In a well-researched and thoughtful way the author explores those aspects of Christian belief that are difficult to accept on face value (like the virgin birth, the tendency to blame the Jews and excuse the Romans for the crucifixion, very different Christmas stories, and miracle stories) and peels away layers of theological presentations and pious fantasies to give us a glimpse of original worship and spirituality. Her writing is provocative and at the same time it is funny. I laughed out loud as I read sections of the book. If you are open to questions about Christianity and the development of religious beliefs you might enjoy this book very much.
An exciting, challenging read........2001-12-31
If you are looking for an analysis of basic Christian beliefs that will most likely make you take a second look at all you were taught in church, than this is the book for you. The author is relentless in her deconstruction of so much of the Christian myth that has been misconstrued as history. She urges the reader to get beyond the literalization that has dominated Christian thought since the enlightenment and to see the Bible for what it is...a theology book. This is a highly readable and, dare I say, "fun" text to delve into and would make for great discussion in a study group. If you like the writings of liberal Episcopal theologian John Shelby Spong, you will enjoy this text immensely.
Book Description
The biography of Luther Christman Ph.D, a highly honored but controversial leader in American nursing, traces the profession and intellectual development that led this coal miner's son to become Vice President of Nursing Affairs, and the Dean, College of Nursing, Rush University.
Luther Christman, a white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant, heterosexual family man, had none of the attributes normally associated with discrimination. Yet he encountered gender discrimination because he was a man in a woman's profession. He was called a pervert when requesting maternity experience. He was refused admission to the Army Nurse Corps in World War II, and entry to two university nursing programs simply because he was a man.
Undeterred, Christman gained qualifications in psychology and his research lead to high level appointments in university nursing facilities. A capable administrator, he became the first male to hold the joint appointments of dean of nursing and hospital director of nursing. He developed the Rush Model of nursing that gained him an international reputation as a nursing leader. Despite these achievements he hit a glass ceiling in the middle of his career.
The biography describes Christman's strategic plans for the development of the nursing profession, which entailed a critique of its organization, policies, practices, education and female domination that challenged nursing leaders, physicians and hospital leaders alike.
But in the end, the profession that put so many barriers in his path deemed him a 'Living Legend'. As a retired, sprightly 90 year-old, he reviews books for the American Journal of Nursing, is president of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing and is still a provocative advocate for his vision of nursing.

A Wonderful Tribute to The Man in The Funny Hat.......2002-05-26
If you are a Dallas Cowboy fan, then you will truly enjoy what Mr. St. John did in this wonderful biography. Having received this book as a birthday present, I completed this touching tome in three days.
During this journey inside of Landry's fedora, anger raced through me as I pictured myself in the bowels of Texas Stadium at the time of Landry's dismissal. That someone who touched so many in spite of his stoicism would be uncerimoniously canned the way he was is one of the greatest travesties this sports world has ever known.
I went with Tom and Alicia Landry back in time, from his days as a defensive mastermind with the New York Giants (can you actually Imagine Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi as assistant coaches? WOW!!! BTW- I'm currently reading my other birthday present - When Pride Still Mattered.) and marveled as his innovative genius. From the 4-3 system he implemented to the "Flex" defense he employed in Dallas, he was ahead of his time.
Reading about the Cowboys through his eyes brought back so many memories. Remember how the offensive line used to do their "Set" in unison after breaking the huddle? How about the Shotgun formation in the 70's? I was almost ten years old when watching the "Hail Mary" break the hearts of many Viking fans in Metropolitan Stadium, even younger on that Thanksgiving Day in 74 when Longley hit Drew Pearson for the winning touchdown. I won a bet with my brother over Super Bowl XII. Having watched all those Green Bay/Cleveland heartbreaks on NFL FILMS on numerous occasions, I found myself rooting for his eventual breakthrough as if I were transported back to the late 60's early seventies. That ICE BOWL loss was something. But as champions do, Landry steered his team through the mental anguish, further adding to his legacy. That he also stayed the course with his father-like image to so many of his players definitely impressed me, for he was cognizant that Professional Football is only a small portion of a man's like. (He later proved this is his last decade on earth after football.)
However the things that touched me the most about this tome is his Christianity and the love he shared with his wife Alicia. I felt his goodness burning through the pages, as his EVERYDAY Virtues inspire me to aspire for greatness when doing life's simple things.
Perhaps the best tribute of this man came in his passing. So many of his players came back; from Eddie Lebaron to Danny White, Don (MEREDITH), Craig (MORTON) and Roger (STAUBACH) mixed in between. When my day comes to shuffle off, I can only hope that I made a difference in lives as this man did. What a great man!!!! What a great Book!!!

A Blinding Tribute to a Great Man.......2002-03-30
It has always been easy to hate the Dallas Cowboys. One can point to their arrogance spawned by an extraordinary success spanning four decades. Perhaps the gruff, bull-like intensity of Tex Schramm was never endearing. The egotistical hillbilly antics of Jerry Jones is certainly a factor. And then there's Michael Irvin, Nate Newton, Duane Thomas, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Don Meredith, Dan Reeves and...my God.....the list never ends.
But it has never been easy to hate Tom Landry. A constant monument for 29 years as head football coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Landry in many ways became the leader of professional football and, more importantly, the community of Dallas. "Landry: The Legend and the Legacy" author Bob St. John embraces this theme with his loving tribute to a man he covered for many years as sportswriter for The Dallas Morning News. Anyone who ever stood in the presence of Mr. Landry could sense his strong character and kind nobility. Bob St. John, undoubtedly, stood in his presence many times and he was certainly blinded by that aura.
I know Tom Landry had his faults, but you will be hard-pressed to find them in "Landry: The Legend and the Legacy." And that's why Bob St. John was the wrong man to author this biography. What a story this would be if a writer from outside of Texas could pen this multi-layered tome. In many ways, a great American is still waiting to be discovered.
But let's not get too negative here. "Landry: The Legend and the Legacy" is a terrific account of the life and times of the one and only Tom Landry - high school football star in Mission, Texas; University of Texas football player and assistant coach; New York Giants defensive back and punter; New York Giants defensive coach; friend and rival (and personal opposite) of Vince Lombardi; head coach of the Dallas Cowboys; loving family man; community volunteer; strong Christian; heartbreaking victim of modern-day business/sports.
Mr. Landry's story is never boring, though one of the most defining moments of his public life - his disturbingly insensitive firing at the hands of Jerry Jones - takes up a large portion of the first quarter of the biography. This is the highlight of the book. Bob St. John (and his editors) would have been better served to tell Landry's story in chronological order.
Certainly the most memorable and harrowing passages of the book are the retelling of those traumatic days leading up to his dismissal - termed the "Saturday Night Massacre" by Dallas sportswriters. These pages (and the long, overly-detailed chapter describing his funeral) should have closed this biography.
The greatness of Tom Landry was, if anything, strengthened by his own handling of his abrupt firing. This is properly detailed by Bob St. John, but once again, far too early in the book. What for many was a professional tragedy of mythic-like proportions, which to this day echoes in the minds of many long-time Dallas residents, should have been left for the closing and final chapters.
"Landry: The Legend and the Legacy" is a loving tribute to Coach Landry. If it was rushed to publication following his death in 2000 (it was), then perhaps after a few years of retrospection, a definitive account of this man's life can be written.
Landry - A huge disappointment!.......2001-10-13
It was with eager anticipation that i awaited receipt of what i thought would be a biography of a football legend. On its arrival i hurriedly opened the first page and started to read.
Landry starts with the great mans death and reads like a lengthy obituary column with eulogy after eulogy after eulogy.
There is NO balanced perspective, it is the sort of book that only a doting daughter/son or parent could write.
For all that, i suppose it is well written, just don't buy it if you are looking for an informative biography!
Book Description
They towered over the frontier: men like Hickok, Custer, Cody, and Earp. From Tombstone to Abilene, on a sprawling, rugged frontier, they forged a life by their cunning and courage. And between these gambling men--some who lost and some who won--was a woman who carved out a legend of her own. A beautiful farm girl from Indiana, Mattie Silks traded innocence for the West's wildest men. But then her trail of love and money took her to the boomtown of Denver and a man named Cort Thomson--where she could play for the highest stakes of all....

Customer Reviews:
A fun trip explaining diabetes.......2003-07-23
My son is five and he really enjoys this book. This is the book he choose for me to read to his class last spring to explain his diabetes to them. We regularly talk about insulin keys and unlocking the carbs now. I really think this book helped him "get it". He doesn't like having diabetes but it helps all of us that he understands why he has to have the shots. It reminds me quite a lot of The Magic School Bus books.
Recently Diagnosed Children and Parents.......2001-09-15
This book explains and explores diabetes in general terminology which will be helpful to recently diagnosed children and their parents. My 4-year old son has diabetes and I wish I would have purchased it when he was first diagnosed.
A magical ride!.......2000-11-21
This book has helped me to answer many questions that my four-year-old daughter has had since being diagnosed with diabetes. It has excellent illustrations and cleverly explains what diabetes is and why our bodies need insulin.
Well... at least the kid likes it.......2000-05-16
This book is written in painfully poor verse. My boy, who was 5 or so when we got the book, liked it, though, so it's not all bad. But if you can't bear uneven meter and forced, stretched, and mauled rhymes, you may want to pass on this and find something crafted with more skill.
